Buttons Wonderland - Rollo Kyoto 手芸ショップ紹介：Rollo 京都店 Rollo is a button shop, located within walking distance from amirisu headquarters. Their company is based in Kobe, but this Kyoto shop is at the center of key fiber destinations in town. Many customers bring their knitting project, and wooden buttons are popular among these folks. Some customers come to replace all the buttons on their ready-made shirts, while others make accessories with the parts available here. The shop staff's favorites are antique glass buttons. Thank you for doing this interview, Norah, while you are busy between teaching workshops and designing. I have been following your work since Knitting Nature, which is a fascinating book that inspires many knitters to this day. I’d like to start with a question about how you got started. You grew up in a family of artists, and were surrounded by diverse tools and materials. What was it about knitting that fascinated you in particular?

ワークショップやデザインのお仕事でお忙しいなか、 インタビューに応じてくださってありがとうございま す。画期的な編みもの本としていまだに話題にのぼる Knitting Nature が出版されて以来、お仕事ぶりをフォ ローしてきました。まずはデザイナーになったきっか けの部分からお聞きしようと思います。アーティスト 一家に生まれ、自宅は様々な材料や道具であふれる環 境に育ったということですが、そのなかでもなぜ編み ものに夢中になったのですか？

I’ve always loved how portable it is. You can knit inside or outside, while nestled in a cosy chair, or even while walking. The ability to rip out easily if I’ve made a mistake or changed my mind was (and still is) appealing as well. I was already pretty good at sewing, by hand and machine by the time I learned how to knit, but cutting out fabric and sitting at the machine makes me a tad nervous. I feel like I have to be in a hurry. Knitting is calming to me. Plus, I’ve always loved indulging in TV, or watching a movie, and making something at the same time. I like the practicality of making something to wear. (I love clothes.)

You wrote in your book that, for a while after graduation, “knitwear designer” did not feel like a real career. How did you become one, and what helped you to feel differently?

Since my parents were both freelance illustrators, I did know that a freelance career was possible. I was good at math and science in school at a time when women were making some real strides in terms of equality in the work place. It was a good thing that girls were told that they could do anything, especially careers that had been thought of as ”men’s jobs.” However, the flip side is that I had to get over thinking that a traditionally ”woman’s job” wasn’t worthy.

I think the conflict still exists among a lot of us who work in the field around the world. You have to be strong enough to tell yourself that what you are passionate about makes you happier than what you are expected to do.

For many younger knitters who have started to knit in the last several years, Knitting Nature is probably what comes to their mind when hearing your name.

Do you feel that nature-inspired design is how you design knitwear, or is it one of the repertoires you have mastered over the years?

Writing Knitting Nature was a turning point for me. It was so great to work on a larger project with a more

本の中で、ブラウン大学を卒業してしばらくのあいだ、 ニットウェアデザイナーという仕事が真面目な仕事で はないような気がしていたと書いていますよね。デザ イナーなったきっかけは何ですか？また、気持ちの整 理がついた理由を教えてもらえますか？ 両親ともにフリーランスのイラストレーターだったの で、フリーランスでやっていくことが可能だというこ とは分かっていました。女性に対する雇用機会の均等 化にむけて大きな変化が生まれている時代。私は学校 では理数系が特に得意でした。女の子でも何だってで きると言われ、特にこれまで男性の仕事だと目されて いた仕事への門戸が開かれ始めたさなかだったので、 伝統的に「女性の仕事」とされていた職業の価値を自 分に納得させるのには時間がかかりました。

その葛藤は今でも、この業界で働く世界中の女性のあ いだに存在するのではないかと思います。自分に期待 されている役割を演じるよりも、情熱を持てるなにか を仕事にする方が幸せなのだと、自分を奮い立たせる 強さが必要です。 この 10 年以内に編みものを始めた若い世代にとって、 ノラ・ゴーンといえば Knitting Nature を真っ先に思い 浮かべるのではないでしょうか。自然の造形からヒン トを得たデザインというのがご自身のスタイルだと思 われますか？それとも、色々な引き出しの 1 つに過ぎ ないのでしょうか。 Knitting Nature を著したことは私にとってもターニン

intellectual theme. I hadn’t really looked to nature for inspiration before that, maybe for a surface pattern or two, but never before as a framework for the structure of a garment. Once I delved into thinking about building garments with polygons, spirals and fractals they became a permanent part of my design vocabulary, or my repertoire as you put it.

Right now I am kind of hung up on geometric shapes. I started teaching a class about designing with large geometric shapes as the main parts of your garment. After collecting great inspirations on Pinterest, I became more fascinated than ever with the idea. Once you get started, one idea leads to another.

Could you please describe your design process?

Do you tend to start with motifs, or do you sketch a design of the whole garment?

I love surface patterning – knitted cables, textures, even wood-carving. Earlier in my career, my design process used to start with the surface pattern, and the garment shape seemed secondary. While I was working at Berroco, and starting especially during the few years I spent together with Margery Winter, I learned to think about the desired result first – about the garment type and the look and feel of the finished result before starting to swatch. These days I am mostly likely to sketch an idea, swatch, (maybe re-sketch), and then draw a schematic before I write the instructions. Each step brings changes and adds details.

You spent 9 years working for Berroco as design director. Could you please tell us about your experiences and your responsibilities there? What did you learn from the experience?

puts a lot of stock in the quality of their designs and a lot of attention to getting consumers to notice their emphasis on design. When working as a team, it was important to think about all levels of knitters, and also present a wide variety of styles to show off each particular yarn. I was given much more of a blank canvas when it came to the books with my name on them, although I was still aware that the purpose of my patterns was to sell yarn. The Norah Gaughan series of booklets (vol 1-16) were fun for me because I was free to explore different directions each season. One season all of the pieces were based on crystal formations, another season was all on fungal forms.

You have 16 pages of patterns on Ravelry! Among so many patterns you’ve published, do you have any particular favorites? What type of design gives you greater motivation?

Doing something new, something a bit scary that I haven’t mastered before gives me motivation. I like to feel clever. I have a really hard time designing super simple things, because I can’t show off at all. I LOVE super simple things and I greatly admire designers who have that skill mastered. I guess, truth be told, I am more sure of my brain than of my design aesthetic.

I think knitwear designers need both, otherwise pattern writing would be a disaster. And you surely do have both! So now you are part of the BT Design Team. How did that happen?

Jared Flood asked if I would be interested in working with Brooklyn Tweed in some capacity, and after discussing the options I became the new member of the design team. I’m honored to be asked and to be working with the team. They’re a talented and fun group. I admire every one of them. The times we get together are rather magical. I know that my designs are affected by the group dynamic and tastes; which is energizing.

basically has two types of yarn that are of similar construction. Do you find that a challenge? What are the possibilities you find in BT’s yarn? (I love BT yarns, I knit almost everything with them.)

I love wool and I adore Brooklyn Tweed yarns.

However, working with Brooklyn Tweed is only one part of the work I’m doing now. I’m working on another book, and I am free to pursue projects with other yarn companies as well. I have more choices than ever. That said, I work well within parameters.

I like the challenge of designing within the bounds of any particular project. Given all the choice in the world I tend to get a bit paralyzed.

You have been in this business longer than most other designers. What has changed in terms of the knitting culture and business in the States?

Years ago I wished for a way to get an esoteric or specialty product to the right consumer.

I see the market has changed quite a bit - and amirisu is probably a part of it - thanks to the Internet.

We’ve come to the last question. How do you spend your free time? Does that influence your knitting in any way?

Free time? I do tend to knit a lot. If I don’t have much free time, it’s because I’ve done it to myself. When I do manage to pull myself away from my needles, it’s probably to do something outdoors with my husband. He and I are really interested in good local food. We buy meat from local farmers and John is a great gardener. Searching out new sources and preparing food is a big part of our weekend activities. All this thinking about locally grown meat and vegetables has made me more interested in local wool products as well. I like the idea of using yarn from breed specific sheep, and I seek out local yarn near home, and especially when traveling.

Locally produced food and products are given larger attention and shelf-space in Japan as well. That makes living outside of big cities more appealing than ever, which is a wonderful thing.

ほとんどのデザイナーより長くこの業界にいるわけで すが、アメリカの編みものカルチャーやビジネスにお ける変化は感じますか？ かつては、珍しい少量生産の商品を、それを欲しがる 顧客に届ける方法があればいいなと考えていました。

その点では、市場は大きく変わりましたね。amirisu も その恩恵を受けているのだと思います。 さて、最後の質問です。趣味というか、自由時間はど んなことをして過ごしますか？それはまた仕事に影響 を与えていますか？ 自由時間ですか？編んでいることが多いです。自由時 間がほとんどないとしたら、それは自分の責任。編み 針を置くことができる時は、夫と屋外で過ごすことが 多いと思います。2 人とも地元の良い食材にとても凝っ ているんです。地元の酪農家から牛肉を買うことも多 く、夫は素晴らしい園芸家でもあります。新しい食材 を買って料理をすることに、週末の多くの時間を費や しています。地場の野菜やお肉について考えているう ちに、地元で作られた毛糸への関心も増してきました。 1 種類の羊の毛（＊ブレンドしていない）で作った糸 で編むことに魅力を感じますし、旅行をするときなど には特に探すようにしています。

日本でも地場の食材への意識が高まり、手に入りやす くなっています。それに伴い、地場食材が手に入りや すい大都市圏以外で生活する魅力も高まってきてい て、とても素晴らしいことだと思います。 今回は貴重なお時間をありがとうございました。これ からも色々な場所でノラさんのデザインを見るのを楽 しみにしています。amirisu でもいつか！

Moving to Nashville ナッシュヴィルに惹かれて

Photos by Rebekka Seale - Camellia Fiber Company In the summer of 2014, my husband and I sold or gave away almost everything we owned, packed my small knitting-supply business, Fringe Supply Co., into the back of our car, and left San Francisco for good. On a whim, really, we moved to Nashville — and everyone wants to know why. There were lots of reasons to leave the Bay Area: it's expensive, far from our families, we'd been there almost 20 years. (And yes, tech culture is killing the city in many ways.) But why Nashville?

For a long time, the only thing anyone outside of Nashville knew about Nashville was that it's the capital of country music. People who've visited might know about the scenic trails, the "hot chicken," the incredibly friendly people. But in the past few years, I kept hearing more and more about Nashville, and I started wondering whether it might be a place we could carry on our creative life. If not forever, at least for a while.

We'd visited several times before but had heard it had changed a lot, was changing all the time. I trusted what I was hearing about the restaurants, but I wondered what else was evolving. I'm friends with Nashvillian Rebekka Seale of Camellia Fiber Company, though we hadn't yet met in person, and so I started paying closer attention, checking out the Instagram feeds of the people she mentioned and then the people they mentioned. What I found was a thriving community of makers, and within that, a quorum of fiber folk: from farming to fashion.

On a trip last spring to scope out potential cool, cheap studio space for Fringe, my Nashville pal DG and I visited Rebekka at her building and also met her studio-mate, Lisa Garcia of Sonadora Handmade, who had recently moved from Portland and told me the best thing about Nashville is the people.

My studio is now across the hall from theirs, in a funky old building full of small creative companies (jewelers, shoemakers, potters). Shortly after I arrived, I was invited by weaver Allison Volek Shelton of Shutters and Shuttles to be part of new group to

be called Ladies of the Cloth, which made me laugh — and which so far consists of a map to the studios of small, women-owned, textile-related businesses in town. In addition to Allison, Rebekka and Lisa, there are the fashion companies of Elizabeth Suzann, Jamie and the Jones, and Amanda Valentine (of Project Runway fame). Plus another new friend of mine, Anna Maria Horner, who has made her name in the fabric world and is in the process of opening Craft South, a knitting and sewing shop in one of Nashville's hottest neighborhoods. And several others I haven't met yet. Enough for a small map.

There's a twice-yearly maker market here called Porter Flea, and when the winter show rolled around (while my husband was recovering from back surgery), I went all by myself. As I was standing in line, I wondered if I couldn't have found someone to come with, and then I realized: everyone I knew in town was a maker and already inside selling their beautiful wares. Which I take as a pretty good sign we've come to the right place.

Niime Tamaki creates light-weight shawls and clothes with soft fabrics full of colors. They easily make anyone look fashionable. Once you start wearing her clothes, you can’t ever let go - that was my feeling after buying the first shawl several years ago.

The designer Niime Tamaki moved to Nishiwaki City in Hyogo Prefecture about 7 years ago, a place known for the Banshu weaving industry. She creates her textiles and garments using a vintage weaving machine (unique to her region) that she has customized for her designs.

“I used to make shirts, and wanted to come up with a unique textile just for my design, but it was difficult for such a small scale producer as myself.

The only factory that listened to me, and answered my request was a weaving factory in Nishiwaki.

Together we created a new fabric and continued to improve it, and in the end, we came up with something that is so soft that you can no longer sew a shirt with it. My instinct told me that it will make an amazing shawl,” she explains.

Shawls can be used by people of all generations, regardless of the fashion style - be it modern chic or casual. That is exactly what Niime tries to achieve with her designs. The weaving factory owner encouraged her to take on the production of her work, because he wanted to retire before long. Niime purchased the machines and started to produce her own textiles, then clothes, and the brand grew from there. The small, family-owned company now manages a retail channel.

“I pick colors almost every day. The warp colors are decided first, then I pick about 30 colors of weft for four machines - in total about 80 colors per day.

This cannot be done if you think too much, so I rely

on my instinct. If I were making 100 shawls in the same color combination, I would give it much more thought, but I only make one or two in the same colors, which gives me a great amount of freedom.”

She recently started to make a collection of garments using a Shima-Seiki knitting machine, as well as a series of hand-weaving mats called “socosiki.” She is also into growing her own cotton plants.

“The knitting machine is the type commonly used for massproduction, but what we are trying to do is small lot production of mass variations. We take a lot of time to create a unique, high quality item using the machine, and it has been a challenge.

As for growing cotton, we do it as organically as possible, as naturally as possible. If you become serious about your products, raw materials become more and more important to you. We became more conscious about what we eat as well. The world is opaque, but we want to stay as transparent and clean as possible. That is why we put our factory and shop together so that people can see how we make our textiles.

Her simple philosophy - making things that she wants to wear on her own - -signifies her unique and attractive style.

amirisu retreat is back! The registration is now open.

This year, we will enjoy the beautiful foliage of Nasu, while you knit and create as your heart desires. The facility is a part of Niki Resort, one of the most highly esteemed resort hotels in Japan. One of the dinners will happen at Niki Hotel, and participants can enjoy the spa facility with hot springs as well.

We will be occupying the entire Art Biotope facility, so that we can knit from morning to night without worrying about curious eyes!

Please note that the language of this retreat is Japanese. Although Jared’s class will be in English with Japanese translation, all the other classes will be in Japanese. Students cannot take the same class twice on both days. If you are a non-Japanese speaker, please bring a Japanese speaking friend to translate for you (who will be required a full registration fee). All participants, both Japanese and non-Japanese, are expected to communicate, become friends, and inspire each other, overcoming language barriers.

She lives in the beautiful area of Lake Tahoe. When she first moved there, the plan was to move on with a real adult life after one season of snowboarding.

But 11 years later, she's still there, knitting, painting, and teaching drawing and painting at a local college.

After designing and producing fabric bags on Etsy, Quenna rediscovered knitting. She began designing her own garments, with an emphasis on top down construction, clean lines, and flattering silhouettes. Her work has appeared in Knitscene, Interweave Knits, Knit Picks, Knit.Wear, and Twist Collective. Lives in Northern California.

Shika has met many knitters while she traveled around the world, and became an avid knitter after returning home.

Her dream is to live in the countryside, looking over mountains, and with a sheep. She currently lives in Tokyo.

yuco lives in Kobe, where she organizes knit-together events. Feels the most relaxed when knitting at these events.

Through meeting many great people, she has become more and more fascinated with knitting. She also teaches fair-isle knitting workshops on a regular basis.

Following a life-long passion for knitting, Lori embarked on her design career in 2009. Lori works from studios in New Jersey and Maine and enjoys yoga, sailing, her four children, three dogs and husband (not necessarily in that order).

Shari Altman lives in rural Vermont. She works as a naturopath's office assistant and is a student of folk herbalism.

Every day she finds time to write, take photographs and walk down her dirt road. Her work has been featured in 1110 journal, Taproot magazine, Kindred magazine and the book From Fields, Orchards, and Gardens.
