Editors' Note Of all seasons, fall seems to shine the brightest, perhaps because we are so busy with everything that it swooshes past us at the speed of light.

Our days are filled with cooking, reading, (not to mention) knitting, traveling and taking a long walk in the woods. The new school year starts, then we have Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year.

This new issue contains a collection of knitwear to complement such a busy season.

From a light-weight cardigan and short sleeve pulloverss for early fall, to a cozy warm cardigan perfect for chilly mornings at a mountain cottage, this issue has plenty of interesting techniques and construction methods used in the patterns. We hope you enjoy the processes and, of course, the end products.

This cardigan features a fun bubble pattern ("Abuku"means "bubble" in Japanese) on the front body. Abuku is knit from the bottom up until the underarms. The sleeves are then knit together with the yoke. The bubble pattern is knit separately and attached to the body of the cardigan.

We had the pleasure of meeting her in person last June, and discovered that she not just talented, but also a very sweet person. Pam Allen is the owner of Quince & Co. in Portland, Maine, as well as a greatly admired knitwear designer. We decided to combine the designer and yarn company feature for this very reason. Everyone knows about you in the States and a lot of people might have already listened to your podcasts, but in Japan and some other countries, people are still discovering Quince and the great stories behind it. So, let us start with some basic questions.

How did you become a knitwear designer?

I didn’t set out to be a knitwear designer.

At some point, a few years after I began knitting, I was sorting through yarn leftovers and decided to make a vest with a bit of color work on the yoke. That vest is long gone, but I still remember how much I wore it. It had a bit of an Austrian feel with a square neckline and a lot of garter-stitch edging. From there, I began to improvise occasionally, a bit on the fly. But when my daughter was born, that’s when I really began to start from scratch. I was also knitting on a knitting machine at that point, big sweaters that provided a lot of space for surface design. I blended different strands of very fine yarn to create different colors within a single piece. I think it was easier then to be original. Today we’re on Ravelry and there are so many patterns out there.

We’re surrounded by sweater designs. In the mid-80’s, the only sweaters to look at were in a store or in one or two magazines. To invent was easy.

What has motivated you to remain a knitwear designer all these years? What sources inspire you?

I love knitting and I love working on a design. I struggle with wanting to do something different shapewise, something that I’m unsure about. I’m slow with new pieces because I want to knit them myself to see if they work. Also, I now lean very much in the direction of minimal knitting. Having spent years doing detailed intarsia and cables, I love the simplicity of plain stitches in a becoming silhouette. Finding the line between boring and clean is a challenge. But it’s a challenge I’m up for.

アメリカでは Quince & Co. やパムのことを 皆が知っていて、パムとハナがやっている ポッドキャストを聴いたことがある人も多い と思うのですが、日本などの国外ではまだま だ Quince についてそれほど知られていない ので、まずは基本的な質問から始めさせてく ださいね。 どんなきっかけでデザイナーになったのです か？

最初からニットウェア・デザイナーになろう と思っていた訳ではないの。編み物を始めて から数年経った頃、あるとき残り糸を寄せ集 めてベストを作ろうと思い立ったの。ヨーク にカラーワークがある用なタイプね。そのベ ストはもうとっくにどこかへやってしまった けれど、お気に入りでいつも着ていたことは 覚えてる。スクエアネックで裾はガーター編 み、ちょっとオーストリアっぽいデザインね。 それから時々、自分で考えたものをぱっと編 むようになりました。でも本格的にゼロから デザインし始めたのは娘が生まれてから。当 時は機械編みでゆったりしたセーターも編ん でいたので、つまり大きな四角い空白にデザ インする余地が沢山あったの。1 つの作品の 中に様々な極細毛糸を引き揃え、いろいろな 色を作り出したり。当時は今よりもオリジナ リティを発揮するのが簡単だったわ。なんせ Ravelry もないし、そんなにパターンが沢山 なかったから。今は山ほどある。８０年代半 ばはセーターといったらお店に置いてあるも のか、あとは雑誌が 1 〜２冊あるくらい。新 しいものを作るのは簡単よね。

長年ニットのデザインをし続けてきた原動力 はなんですか？どんなものに勇気づけられま すか？

編み物が大好きで、デザインするのも大好き なの。いつも悩むのは、新しいシェイプを 試してみたいけど上手くいくか分からないと き。アイデアがちゃんとカタチになるかどう か、自分で実際に編んで確認したいので、私 のデザインには時間がかかります。 それから、今はミニマルなものに惹かれるの。 長年凝ったインターシャや縄編みをしたけ ど、今はシンプルな編み地でおしゃれなシル エットを作るのが好きです。退屈なデザイン

Making things simpler while adding a touch of your originailty is an extremely hard thing to do. But we have to tell you, we truly love the result of your challenge! Would you care to summarize your journey before you started Quince?

Right out of high school, I worked in a boutique sewing dresses all day long, an apprenticeship of sorts. Later, I opened my own shop and after sewing at least a thousand dresses in woven fabrics, I began sewing things in knitted fabric. I loved that I could make simple shapes that gave here and there with the body. The body created shape in the garment and I didn’t need to build it in with darts and curved seams.

And I began to applique the surface. It was a natural thing eventually to turn more to actual knitting. I could make the fabric and knit in any pattern or motif I wanted.

After the boutique life, I took a detour. I went to college, majored in French, and got a masters degree in Linguistics. My plan was to travel the world and teach English in other countries. Instead, I ended up in Maine, where everyone at the time already spoke English. So after a bit of waitressing, I got a job as assistant editor at a boating magazine.

Then I got married, had two children, and started knitting in earnest. I could carry my projects with me to the playground or get a few rows knitted during nap time.

From there, I began designing and submitting my ideas to magazines and yarn companies. Eventually, I became editor of Interweave Knits magazine (my dream job), then went to Classic Elite Yarns as creative director.

I see it has been a winding road - but it seems everything you did in the past points towards your current success. So, Quince & Co. What made you decide to start a yarn company?

Quince & Co. happened in a very serendipitous way. While I was working at 30

高校卒業後、私はブティックで１日中ドレス を縫う仕事をしていたの。縫い子に弟子入り したようなものね。その後自分のお店を持っ て、普通のファブリックで少なくとも 1000 着くらいはドレスを縫ったのではないかとい う後、ニット生地を使い始めたの。あちこち いじらなくてもシンプルなフォルムが身体 にフィットするのが楽しくて。ダーツやカー ブを作らなくても、身体と洋服が合わさって シェイプが出来上がるでしょう。表面にアッ プリケを加えてみたり。そこから本当の編み 物に向かうのは自然の流れでしょう？自分で 生地を編みながらモチーフやディテールを埋 め込めるのだから。 ブティックのキャリアのあと、ちょっと寄り 道をしました。大学でフランス語を学び、言 語学で修士号をとりました。卒業したら世界 中を旅して、海外で英語を教える計画だった のよ。でも結局、みんなが英語しか話さな いメイン州に落ち着くことになってしまった の。しばらくウェイトレスをした後、ボート 雑誌の編集部のアシスタントになりました。 結婚して、2 人子供を産んで、そこで再び本 格的に編み物を始めることになりました。編 み物なら公園に持っていったり、子供が寝て いる間に数段編んだりできるでしょ？ 自分でデザインを始め、雑誌や糸メーカーに アイデアを提案したりするようになったのは その後。最終的に、Interweave Knits という 雑誌の編集長になり ( 当時の自分には夢の仕 事だったわ )、そして Classic Elite Yarns ( 糸 メーカー ) のクリエイティブ・ディレクター も務めました。

Classic Elite, I got a phone call from a man in Texas who raised mohair goats. He asked me if I’d be interested in buying his fiber and having it spun in a mill in Biddeford, Maine. That was the first time I’d heard that there was a mill spinning YARN right down the street. I called the owner and we became friends and then, after a few crazy conversations, we decided to start a yarn business. I can’t tell you how exciting it was for me to imagine making a yarn in an old mill right down the road. That mill still spins most of our yarns. But we now spin in three other mills, as well.

For me it’s nothing less than tragic that we’ve almost entirely lost our textile industry.

At one time, we spun yarn and wove fabrics in buildings that stretched, literally, for miles along New England rivers. All that is gone now. What excites me most about Quince is not just that we sell yarn, but that we MAKE yarn using US manufacturers. It isn’t easy.

It’s not cheap. But that’s what keeps me inspired.

In the world we live in, sourcing and manufacturing in your own country is becoming harder and harder... I can relate to that. What was it like at the beginning stage? Also, any other challenges?

I was very lucky to have a yarn spinner willing to work with me. I knew I wanted to make wool yarn and wanted to source the wool from US sheep. We started with four yarns. I didn’t want to make a singleply and combine strands to make different weights. I wanted each yarn to have a distinct personality. So we began with these: Chickadee, a bouncy three-ply yarn (sport weight) spun from a soft fiber, Lark, a fourply (plies are finer than those in Chickadee, so it’s more "refined"), Osprey, spun from very fine fiber, a three-ply Aran-weight in which the plies have a relaxed twist so the yarn is soft and squishy, and Puffin, a singleply chunky.

Quince & Co. は思いがけない偶然が重なって 生まれたの。Classic Elite で働いているある とき、テキサスでモヘアゴートを飼育してい るという男性から電話が掛かってきたの。彼 からモヘアを買ってメイン州のビッドフォー ドの紡糸工場で糸にしないか、という提案 だったわ。そのとき初めて、家の近所に毛糸 を作れる場所があることに気づいたの。すぐ にその紡糸工場のオーナーに電話をして親し くなり、何度か好き勝手な会話をしているう ちに、一緒に糸を作ろうというはなしになっ たの。自宅の近所の歴史ある紡糸工場で毛糸 が作れると想像するだけで、どんなにわくわ くしたことでしょう！私たちの製品の大半は その工場で作られているの。今では他の工場 とも契約しているけど。 我が国のテキスタイル業がほぼ完全に失われ てしまったなんて、悲劇としか言いようがな いわ。ある時代には、紡糸・紡績施設がニュー イングランドの河川沿いに、文字通り何マイ ルも続いていたものなのよ。もう何も残って ないわ。何より感激なのは、糸を売ることよ りも、Quince はアメリカの製造メーカーと 一緒に糸を作っているということよ。簡単で はないわ。安くもない。でもそれが私の原動 力なの。

現代の世の中において、自国で原料調達から 製造まで行うのはどんどん難しくなっていま すよね。私もその問題意識を持っています。 事業を始めたころ、どんな様子でしたか？苦 労はありましたか？

私と仕事をしたいという紡糸工場があって本 当にラッキーでした。最初から考えていたの は、ウール糸を作りたいということと、国産 の羊の毛を使いたいということ。まずは 4 種 類の糸から始めました。シングルプライを 1 種類作り、それを何本か縒り合わせることに よって毛糸の太さを変えることは可能だけれ ど、それはやりたくなかったの。それぞれの 糸にはっきりとした特徴を持たせたかった。 Chickadee( 柔らかい毛で作った弾力のある 3ply で、太さはスポーツ )、Lark (Chickadee よりも細い糸を縒り合わせた 4ply)、Osprey

The other thing I wanted was to have a zillion colors. We began with 37. Soon we’ll have more than 50.

( とっても柔らかい毛を緩く紡いだ 3ply のア ラン糸、糸も柔らかく肌触りがいい )、そし て Puffin ( 極太の 1ply)。

So we began with 148 separate yarns. Our initial challenge was keeping inventory stocked in those yarns. We quickly ran out after launching and it wasn’t easy to get the yarn replaced. I don’t think we’ve ever had all our yarns on the shelf at one time. There’s a long lead time to have yarn spun. I quickly learned an important business lesson: Never wait until you’re out of something to reorder.

もうひとつ、やってみたかったのは沢山の色 展開をすること。37 色から初めて、もうす ぐ 50 色になります。

Not long after we launched, the small dye house we used in Massachusetts closed.

The alternative was further away, more expensive, and involved much bigger minimums. Not a good situation for us.

But I partnered with three other people to buy the equipment from the closed dye house, move it up here, and start a new dye business. A huge undertaking, but an important one for Quince & Co. Supply isn’t our only challenge. Cost is another one. Right after we began, wool prices soared and we had to raise our prices.

Fortunately, in a global market, everyone is affected. So we weren’t the only ones who had to raise prices. Also, it’s expensive to make a product here. Labor is more expensive and there are environmental standards to meet that cost money. These are good things—but they make domestic products less competitive with imports from other countries. We initially met that challenge by selling directly to the knitter through the internet. Now, we also wholesale to select stores. We found that if we worked with stores who were "flagships" for us, who carried a good selection of yarn and displayed it all together in a Quince corner, we could afford to keep our prices reasonable (very important to me) and sell wholesale as well.

I need to mention our linen yarns, which are spun in Europe. It’s important for us to have 34

つまり、148 種類の糸からスタートさせたと いうこと。種類が多いので、在庫レベルを一 定に保つのが大変でした。販売開始からすぐ に糸が売り切れ、再生産をするのに時間がか かったの。これまで一度として、すべての色 が棚に揃ったことはないと思うわ。紡糸には 時間がかかるので、すぐに重要な事実に気づ かされたわ。在庫がなくなってから次のオー ダーをしては駄目ということ。 糸を売り始めてからほどなくして、マサ チューセッツ州の小さな染色工場が閉鎖して しまったの。その他の選択肢は遠くて、高く て、最低ロット数も大分多かったの。とって も困ってしまって。結局私と 3 人の出資者で、 閉鎖した染色工場の設備を買い取り、メイン 州に運んできて、こちらで新しい染色ビジネ スを始めることにしました。大きな決断だっ たわ。でも Quince & Co. のビジネスにとっ ては重要でした。 供給体制を作るチャレンジに加えて、コスト は本当に難しい問題よ。事業を初めてすぐに 羊毛の原価が高騰してしまって、毛糸の値段 も上げざるを得なかった。幸い、グローバル マーケットの中で影響を受けたのはウチだけ ではなく、価格改定を行ったのも我が社だけ ではなかったの。でもその一方で、アメリカ 国内で生産するのは本当に高くつくのよ。労 働コストも高いし、環境対策費用もかかる。 もちろん、環境対策は大事なことよ。でも、 それによって輸入品に比べ、国産の商品の競 争力が落ちるのよね。だから最初は価格を抑 えるため、消費者へインターネットで直販販 売することにしました。現在は厳選した毛糸 ショップに限り、卸売りも行っています。何 年かやって分かってきたことは、信頼できる ショップに旗艦店になってもらって、幅広い 品揃えで Quince コーナーを作ってもらえば、 毛糸の価格を適正に保つこともできるし ( 私 にとってとても重要なことよ）、卸売りもで きるということ。

a seasonal yarn and we don’t grow organic linen in the US. So we sourced an organic linen yarn from Belgium (fiber) and Italy (spinning). This year we introduced a new version of organic linen yarn, Kestrel, spun in a ribbon structure. Love. We hope to keep working with the mill in Italy to develop yarns from this same organic fiber. We feel that if we can help sustain a market for a good product (organically grown flax), then we are encouraging good farming practices and all that that means. Maybe someday we’ll grow the flax for our linen here—I can hope.

You mentioned the wool industry situation in the United States. Could you please tell us a little more about the current situation and trends? Compared to Japan, it seems to us that there are far greater demands for home grown wool in the US.

Unlike Australia and New Zealand that raise sheep specifically for fiber, our sheep industry is a hybrid of meat and fleece animals. In Australia, they raise merino sheep and breed for fine fleeces. Here, from my understanding, most of the large ranches raise a cross between Rambouillet, Columbia, and Targhee sheep and the wool is called "territory" wool. It’s sold to brokers who grade it by fineness, whiteness, crimp, and length of fiber. And farmers who’d like to raise animals for fiber are often forced to sell them for meat. In dry seasons, when sheep are at risk, ranchers send them to a slaughterhouse. Otherwise, they lose on all counts. I’d love to see our country start to take seriously a fiber industry and breed specifically for that.

That said, we do have smaller farms and ranches that raise sheep specifically for fiber.

But they don’t produce in the quantities we need and the prices are too high. You can make lovely yarns with their fleece, but then you have an "artisanal" product. And you have to charge a lot for it. My goal has always been to create a lovely American 36

アメリカ国内の羊毛関連産業についてお話し されていましたが、もう少し最近の状況や今 後の展望などについてお話しいただけます か？日本と比べると、アメリカでは国産の羊 毛に対する需要はだいぶ高いように見えるの ですが。

Another question --- I am dying to ask this.

Quince's aesthetic. What inspires it? How do you manage such consistency?

We develop, make, and sell US yarns. But our strongest marketing tool is our patterns, and the best way to present those is through pictures that inspire. When I worked at bigger companies, we hired makeup, hair people, and a stylist for photo shoots, but I was never very happy with the end result. I wanted something that felt more real, with a slight edge of theater or story, but that didn’t feel contrived. Carrie Hoge, who I worked with at Classic Elite, joined me in starting Quince & Co., and became our photographer and graphics person. We have similar ideas about what’s pretty and it was a joy (and hard work) to be able to create the kinds of images we both liked. Carrie recently left us to work on her own brand and to have another baby (!). But she’ll continue to freelance for us occasionally. And we’ll continue to work with new people who can bring life and loveliness to our images.

You seem to be trying a lot of new things, including podcasts, new yarns, etc. What is your perspective of the industry --- where is it going in a macro view --- and where is Quince heading?

The knitting world is strong and continues to grow and evolve. Ravelry and other websites have made it possible to be inspired by people within the community of knitters, and has created a community of knitters. Knitters are no longer dependent on magazines or books for patterns and ideas.

And, interestingly, magazines and books continue to thrive. The interest in knitting information and inspiration seems to still be strong. It’s a wonderful thing to see so many people making lovely things and learning from each other.

As for Quince & Co., my goals remain the 40

same as when I began. I want to make beautiful yarns in the US and sell them at a reasonable price so we can continue to tap into what remains of the wool and the spinning sector here. Along with that, I want to inspire people to knit—and to learn to knit. I see our audience not just as hardcore knitters, but also those women (and men) who enjoy knitting when they get started, but give up when patterns become too much of a challenge. I try to keep our designs on the simple side (aesthetically, I don’t think a sweater needs to have a lot going on to be attractive) and our patterns thorough and approachable.

As for the yarn-making industry here, I may be overly optimistic, but I see a small trend in the US-made direction. All the mills we work with mention that they’ve had more inquiries lately from people wanting to spin hand-knitting yarns. This can only be a good, good thing. If I were to predict, I’d say that the US will never be the textile capital of the world again. But, we might have a strong mid-size sector that spins yarn for companies like ours and also for— hope they’re listening—large high-profile ready-to-wear companies like Ralph Lauren and Eileen Fisher. If several of these large manufacturers would make one sweater per collection in this country, just ONE sweater, they’d do a lot to help stabilize the industry that’s left. It would be great if we could develop expertise in certain spinning/ weaving areas, the same way that Japan has perfected silk and linen spinning and weaving.

The same thing can be said about Japan...

But we believe that the trend is turning towards locally grown and developed materials!

We’ll keep developing new yarns. We recently introduced a mohair/wool laceweight yarn sourced specifically from Texas.

It’s my new favorite yarn because it’s simply beautiful. But also because it’s our first animal and regional-specific yarn. Hard as it may be to believe, Texas was once the mohair capitol of the world. Today export has gone from 35 million pounds to barely one million. But the fiber they raise there is some of the best in the world. We hope to expand on this idea. We hope to develop a dk weight in the same blend of fibers.

Can't wait to knit with the new yarns very soon!

Speaking of knitting, if you were to give advice to new designers out there, what would you say? As an experienced designer, and as a yarn company owner?

First, never be afraid to try new things— shapes, color and pattern combinations, utter simplicity. As surrounded as we all are by lovely designs, it’s easy to write off what we want to do when it might not look like what’s popular at the moment. Swatching is the best way I know to let go of sweater images and to focus on knitting and what it can do. Yarn and needles are a great way to spur the imagination.

Report: amirisu retreat amirisu hosted a knitting and art retreat - the first of its kind in Japan - last May in Nasu Resort Area. Tokuko talks about her very first retreat experience. 去る 5 月、那須にて日本初の編み物・アート・リトリートを開催しました。トクコが初 めてのリトリート体験をリポートします。

As the May holiday week ended, and the resort area in Nasu regained its tranquility, the very first amirisu retreat took place there.

ゴールデンウィークが終わり、その静けさを 再び取り戻した那須で、amirisu 初のリトリー トが開催されました。

I learned the word "retreat" from Meri herself.

She spent a lot of time telling me what a retreat is like and how one changed her life, and I decided to believe her and help her organize one.

私がこのリトリートという言葉を知ったのは メリさんから。色々な話を聞くととても楽し そうですし、参加することで人生さえ変わる んだ ( 現にメリさんは人生が変わった ) と熱 弁をふるう彼女を信じ、これはひとつやって みるかと思ってスタートさせました。

Meri took care of most of the planning and arrangements, so all I had to do in advance was advertise the event to my students and prepare for my classes. Which means, I had no idea about the schedule or activities. I was ready to enjoy the event as a participant.

セッティングは全てメリさんがやってくれま したので、当日までは私は宣伝と講師準備に 専念できました。よって、私は内容について は何も知らないまま、参加者の一人としてリ トリートに臨んだわけです。

Let me tell you about the venue. Art Biotope Nasu is a facility adjacent to a famous luxury hotel called Niki Club. While the building itself is small, we were able to walk around and enjoy the entire hotel property, including its woods and gardens. It was also great to be able to use the hotel's spa - both outdoor and indoor. Such a relaxing four days.

まず、施設の説明から。私達が泊まった「アー トビオトープ那須」はラグジュアリーホテル として有名な二期倶楽部に併設されている施 設で、宿泊施設としてはコンパクトな作りで すが、二期倶楽部が所有している森を散策で き、露天風呂やスパも使用可能ということで、 素晴らしい環境の中での 4 日間を過ごすこと が出来ました。

Most meals took place at Art Biotope Cafe, but on one evening, we had a gorgeous dinner at the Garden Restaurant at the hotel.

The last dinner was a barbecue at their kitchen garden, with lots of freshly picked vegetables. Thanks to everyone telling me to eat more, and thanks to tasty meals, I was able to gain a kilogram (2 pounds).

食事も基本的にはアートビオトープ内のカ フェで取りましたが、一日はガーデンレスト ランで素敵なディナーを頂き、最終日夜は キッチンガーデンにてオシャレで楽しいバー ベキューと、こちらも至れり尽くせり。メリ さんを筆頭にみんなの食べろ食べろ攻撃を受 けた私は、美味しいご飯も相まって、めでた く 1 キロ太りました。

Next, of course, were the workshops. Olga Buraya-Kefelian, who had flown all the way from the States, and Yurio Seki, a famous Japanese graphic designer, and I taught the classes. The workshops went well, and

afterwards, seeing what other people made was so much fun. I really wanted to try the fabric printing.

Apart from workshops, we spent a lot of time knitting and chatting at a cafe or in the courtyard, or walking in the woods. On one evening, I walked down to the tennis court lawn by myself after dinner, as Yurio suggested, to lie down and watch the full moon. It was so beautiful. I have been working so hard these last few years, and at that moment, I felt that the retreat and the moonlight had restored my soul.

WS 以外では森を散歩したり、中庭やカフェ でおしゃべりしながら編み物したりと思い思 いに過ごします。私は夜にスパ内でセキさん に勧められ、お風呂上がりに一人きりで真っ 暗な中テニスコートまで歩き、寝転がって素 晴らしい月夜を眺めたのが一番の思い出で す。ここ何年も必死に働いてきた私にとって、 このリトリートはまさに命の洗濯だなと感じ た瞬間でした。

After the magical four days were over, I realized how perfect this vacation had been for someone who is weary of ordinary travels --- spending a lot of time on the road, eating, shopping or just lying on the beach. Also, it is not always easy to make new friends outside of the workplace, but here, it was so easy because everyone had a common interest. Moreover, I was able to find a few people willing to help with amirisu's work!

The toughest part was going home. I kept saying that I never wished to leave.

終わっての感想は、移動や食事、買物ばかり の、そしてのんびりするだけの旅行では物足 りなかった私にはピッタリなスタイルだなと いうこと。そして、大人になると会社以外の 友人を作るのは難しいものですが、ここには 同じ趣味を持った方が集うため本当に簡単に 仲良くなれました。実は amirisu を手伝って 下さる方も発見！パターンチーム代表として は素晴らしい出会いでした。 問題は、帰るのが本当に辛い。下界に戻りた くなーいとずっと言っていた気がします。 また来年、リトリートでみなさんに会えます ように。参加者の一人として願っています。

Introduction to Machine Knitting 機械編みについて知りたい！ Vol.2 Text and photos by Mika Kitahara Hello, knitters around the world! I hope you have been productive and are having fun knitting. In the last amirisu issue, I introduced circular and flat knitting machines.

This time I will show you how I use my circular knitting machine to make hand knitting easier and more enjoyable. ● Create I-Cord with Knit Mill As the name suggests, this machine has a handle that looks like the one on a coffee mill. It has 4 needles, and creates a string that is as thick as a common I-Cord.

How can you use this cord? You can create a bracelet or a necklace… what everyone can usually think of. How can we use it for hand knitting?

By picking up stitches from this cord, I get results similar to the I-Cord Cast On. This helps you to knit something like a baby bib in no time.

(Photos ①②③ ) ● For Sock Knitters One sunny morning, I did a little experiment.

I dyed a sock yarn with Kool Aid. First of all, I knit a tube using a toy knitting machine (the key is to knit with two strands).

I washed it and then dyed it with food coloring at random, then wrapped it up and put it in a microwave. After that, I washed it again and let it dry.

When unraveled, I had two matching skeins for socks.

The blue box explains the back neck shaping. The numbers are read in the same way as armhole shaping (explained in the last issue). Dec 6 sts every 2 rows, one,…etc.

At the same time, you work on short rows written inside the green box. It's coded the same as decreases, but instead you do short rows. "6 sts 2 rows twice. Work 5 sts in the end." This means you work to the last 6 sts and turn.

Here is another heroine of mine, Amy Herzog, who has successfully developed a method to fit your handknitted sweater to your body (not vice versa!). She teaches widely on Craftsy and elsewhere, and has an informative website, but for those of you who prefer to sit down with a hard copy book and a cup of coffee, this is for you. It is great, and when you decide to try out what you have just learned, you have 21 patterns to choose from in the book!

Like most women, I've had a hard time choosing the right size of garments for my body shape, be it off the rack or hand-knit.

I am short but not thin, and size S does not fit me unless I modify here and there. Amy's theory helped me to understand what the standard sizes mean, and how my shape in particular diverges from it. Based on this knowledge, you will understand what type of sweater designs will show off your strengths while hiding the parts you want to hide. The knowledge not only helps you to knit perfect-fit sweaters, but also helps in choosing your everyday wardrobe. I consider myself enlightened.

This is another interesting book for customizing your knitwear, but this one is for creating a pattern from scratch. The starting point of the process this book suggests is not your body type or shape, but an existing garment that you like. After measuring your favorite garment, the book then tells you how to change parts, such as neckline or sleeves, and how to calculate shaping (Math alert!). After all, designing patterns is all about the Math.

これも手編みニットをカスタマイズする方法 を解説した本。ただし、こちらはゼロからパ ターンを起こしたい人向きです。最初に、自 分のサイズを測るのではなく、気に入ってい るニットウェアのサイズを測るところからス タート。サイズを測ったら、ネックラインや 裾、肩、袖などの各パーツを変えるにはどう したらいいか、袖ぐりはどのように計算した ら良いか ( 数学の時間！ ) を教えてくれます。 結局のところニットのデザインとは数学 ( 算 数 ) なので、しょうがないですね。

What I find particularly interesting is the part that explains how to improve the fitting of the garment you are knitting, without frogging. I am not enthusiastic about the patterns included in this book, but overall, it's a great guide for improving your skills, and an essential starting point for novice designers.

いのかを懇切丁寧に教えてくれる本。こんな 本が日本でいつか出版されるといいな。 この本で特に面白いと思った部分は、編み始 めたあとで「お、やっぱり身体に合わないぞ」 と思ったときの対処方法が書いてあること。 解かないで処理する方法です。掲載されてい るパターン自体はそれほど好みではないので すが、新人デザイナーの参考書として大変良 書だと思います。

Keiko is a Japanese knitter who loves colors and cables. After moving to the United States, she started knitting again in her spare time, and recently learned knitting with recycled yarn from old sweaters. She enjoys spinning and dyeing yarn as well.

Following a life-long passion for knitting, Lori embarked on her design career in 2009. Interested in the mixture of texture, shape and finishing details, she designs modern, wearable knits for all ages. Lori works from studios in New Jersey and Maine and enjoys yoga, sailing, her four children, three dogs and husband (not necessarily in that order).

In May, we had our very first art retreat in Japan. The four days went past like a shot - with lots of laughter, knitting, eating and brainstorming for the next year.

Another challenge we are embracing this year is offering amirisu in print! (We are going backwards, we know). After lengthy discussions and hours of frustration, together with our new partner in North America, we are venturing into the new format. Hope you enjoy the results of our experiment.

Lastly, our dream to offer quality yarns with chic and refined patterns has finally come true.

We hope that our new (tiny, tiny) shop will become an inspiration to knitters in Japan.

amirisu としての活動も 3 年目に突 入し、今年は数々の新たな挑戦に取 り組んでいます。 5 月には初のリトリート。本当に楽 しく笑顔一杯、ちょっと盛りだくさ んの会になりました。参加者の方々 から「来年はこうしてほしい」と嬉 しいリクエストを頂いたり。 もう 1 つが印刷版の発行。北米に 印刷会社を探し、質・価格ともに納 得のいくスペックを求めて調整を重 ね、心配と思い切りを経て完成した のがこの 5 号です。実験の沢山詰まっ た今号、お楽しみ頂けたでしょうか。 そして、オシャレなパターンと共に 糸も届けたいという念願がついに叶 いました。集まる方々が新しいデザ インや素材に触れられる、インスピ レーションあふれる場所を作るとい う夢、実現させていきたいです。 また次号、今度は水辺でお会いしま しょう。 amirisu Tokuko & Meri
