of many innovative IT companies and their presence ensures continued progress in the field of data transport.
Then there are those who praise the excellent physical and digital networks, or the inspiring energy of this centuries-old trading city with its rich cultural heritage. All these are true and yet Amsterdam has still more qualities to offer. Anyone who visits the city and tastes its unique atmosphere can vouch for that fact. As one American entrepreneur writes: “Amsterdam offers all the advantages of a cosmopolitan city and business centre, but retains its intimate scale. Major transit port The Amsterdam port region is a major transit port for dry, liquid and break bulk, containerised and roll-on/roll-off cargoes destined for or originating from the European mainland. But with the shifting of the economic focus in Europe, an extra dimension has emerged. In their search for an ideal operating base to coordinate and consolidate their activities on the European continent, more and more companies are choosing the Amsterdam region for their Pan-European head office. Meanwhile, some 1,400 foreign enterprises have settled in the Amsterdam region. They experience the advantages of the Dutch capital’s financial, business, logistics, creative and IT services. Crucially, there is also the cluster effect created by the nearby international air and seaports. The strength of Amsterdam is also defined to a considerable extent by its compact scale. There are more than 350 million European consumers within 1,000 kilometres of Amsterdam and the region is eminently equipped to distribute and supply transport and passenger flows to and from this second-largest consumer market in the world. In close vicinity is a large port complex where all types of cargo can be handled, good inland waterways, fine road and rail connections, and an airport with an extensive network of global connections. Dutch ports perform very well in terms of transhipment speed, reliability of logistic services and cost effectiveness. The customs authorities developed an advanced and highly automated cargo clearing system, a forerunner to the future European Customs 10 Amsterdam Seaports Guide 2010

Amsterdam Seaports: Four into one does go Amsterdam Seaports is comprised of four major seaports all located in the same area and complementing each other’s facilities and services. The spacious deep sea port of Amsterdam itself serves transhipment and logistics companies that operate on a more personal and client client-oriented way compared to the three largest European ports. The port of Zaanstad is situated north of Amsterdam, while west of the city in the North Sea coastal area are the two ports of IJmuiden and Beverwijk. These are situated at the entrance to the North Sea Canal where the steel and paper industry, short sea shipping, fishing, offshore, ferry and cruise traffic are all thriving. The four ports that make up the single entity of Amsterdam Seaports handle a combined total of nearly 100 million tons of cargo. After Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg and Marseilles, this makes Amsterdam Seaports the fourth largest in the Hamburg-Le Havre range. As a versatile cargo handling and transport centre, Amsterdam Seaports welcomes practically all types of goods with the notable exception of crude oil (there are no refineries in the area). The terminals handle dry, liquid and break bulk, container and ro-ro cargoes. Amsterdam Amsterdam is by far the largest port of the four. Deep-water quays as well as facilities along the rail and road links are available at reasonable terms. Companies have recently settled in the new port area, west of the city, among others in the new Afrikahaven (Africa harbour) port basin area. Along its 3,600-metre quay is a zone for new cargo handling activities and – further away from the waterfront – distribution and logistics activities. Near the city centre the modern Passenger Terminal Amsterdam accommodates large cruise vessels, while many river cruise vessels call at Amsterdam as well. IJmuiden Entering the port area from the North Sea, IJmuiden is a rapidly growing tidal port with three port basins. Its harbour is designed for short sea shipping, reefer warehousing and offshore oil, gas and wind energy supply activities. IJmuiden is Europe’s largest fisheries centre, a cruise and ferry port and an offshore base at the same time. It is also an industrial city, with the Corus steel complex being located on the north bank of the port entrance. Beverwijk: Flexible short sea and inland shipping port Located three kilometres inland from the North Sea, Beverwijk is a growing short sea services port accommodating ocean-going vessels drawing up to eight metres. Serving the large agricultural complexes of the northern parts of the Netherlands, the port handles large amounts of seed potatoes, other vegetables and fruit. Several refrigerated and deep-frozen food warehouses are operated by large trading houses. As the largest potato handling port in Europe, Beverwijk’s warehousing and transport personnel have the expertise and skills needed for the specialised handling of agricultural crops. Stevedores, warehouse operators and road hauliers combine to provide a seamless chain of transport services for produce importers and exporters. Beverwijk is also a timber transhipment port, with packaged timber being imported from the northern European and Baltic countries. Fertiliser is by far the largest export commodity to be loaded from inland barges into ocean-going ships, with 250,000 tons per year. The 16,000 m2 Container Terminal Beverwijk has the capacity to handle 50,000 containers annually and is fitted with modern equipment such as gantry and mobile cranes, reach stackers and terminal trailers. Zaanstad, first in food The cocoa processing plants in the Zaan region north of Amsterdam are the major reason for Amsterdam Seaports’ position as the world’s largest cocoa port, handling half a million tons of cocoa beans annually. Many other food products are also prominent in the Zaan area, however. Companies such as Dutch supermarket group Ahold, Verkade (United Biscuits), the farina plant of the British Tate & Lyle group, the Meneba flour mill, Honig, Lassie and Duijvis process foodstuffs in their Zaan production units, which are then marketed to consumers the world over. The Zaan region is also focused on the timber industry. Packaged timber – especially pine – is imported via Zaandam, arriving from the Baltic and distributed from the port. Zaanstad has a very distinctive character, with more than 25 large industrial companies located within its municipal borders. The Zaan people have a special industry orientated mentality. A new expansion site has been prepared along the North Sea Canal in the Westzaner polder and HoogTij industrial area, with the first companies already in place. Covering 100 hectares and including a quay length of 550 metres and an option for another 800, Zaanstad has room for more industry.

The regional paper industry processes about half a million tons into quality paper. Pulp is imported via Amsterdam from North America, Finland, Spain and Portugal. Sand and gravel Amsterdam is also a major port for building construction materials. Sand and gravel dredged in the North Sea serve as a raw material for the building industry and the production of concrete products such as paving stones and prefab constructions. Granite extracted from the rocky coasts of Scotland and Norway is discharged and stored in Amsterdam bulk terminals. Inland shipping looks slow, but lighters cover the total distance of 200 km from Amsterdam to Duisburg (Germany), for example, within 14 hours at an average speed of nearly 14 km/h. All port areas have rail connections, while Amsterdam has access to the new all-cargo ‘Betuwe’ rail link connecting the Dutch ports directly to Germany’s industrial centres. Daily rail connections move containers to and from mid and south Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy overnight. The Dutch road network is part of the European motorway system and distances to all continental destinations are relatively small.

Ship repair and maintenance Shipbuilding is one of the oldest industries in the region. In fact, the floating drydock was invented in Amsterdam. Shipbuilding has disappeared in Amsterdam, but two shipyards are specialized in the maintenance, repairs and conversions of seagoing vessels. Voyage repairs, day and night, are routine jobs. Shipdock Amsterdam operates four graving dry-docks for ships up to 140, 160, 205 and 250 metre length, about 85,000 dwt. The yard is known for quick and high quality repairs, conversions dockings and its work force is well experienced. Shipdock is specialized in the repairs and conversions of dredgers, offshore vessels, deepsea trawlers, car carriers, cruiseships, navy vessels and chemical product tankers. Oranjewerf Scheepsreparatie is active in maintenance, repairs, conversions, lengthening, hull and machinery upgrades as well. They concentrate on the smaller types of vessels like coasters, tugs, offshore suppliers, dredgers, barges and fishing craft. Oranjewerf’s facilities include a floating drydock, a slipway, repair berths and fully equipped workshops. The yard docks vessels up to 135 x 24,5 x 7 metre (length x width x draft); a deadweight of about 6,000 tons. Mobile voyage repair companies are active throughout the entire port region. They provide a round-the-clock service to and drive their fully equipped repair trucks alongside the ship at her berth.

Amsterdam Seaports Guide 2010 89
Sail 2010 Five years have passed since the last edition but from 19 to 23 August 2010 Amsterdam will, once again, be the backdrop for SAIL! In 2005 more than 1.8 million visitors from across the world made their way to the IJ Harbour in Amsterdam to wonder at the spectacle that is SAIL. Of the more than 600 vessels which participate in this world famous sailing event, the 20 amazing ‘Tall Ships’ attract the most attention. In 2010 visitors will be able to marvel at, amongst others, the spectacular vessels Kruzenshtern and Sedov (Russia), Dar Mlodziezy (Poland), Dewaruci (Indonesia) and Götheborg (Sweden). Our very own ‘Clipper Amsterdam’, recently returned home from a world voyage, will also be taking part in the festival. Besides the ‘Amsterdam’, many other classic Dutch sailing and motor vessels will be in attendance alongside the most state of the art navy ships. To whet your appetite for what awaits in 2010, here an impression of the previous edition of SAIL in 2005.
The main attraction will be the
More than 600 ships moored in and
impressive fleet of Tall Ships.
around the IJ harbour.
The famous Tall Ship Kruzenshtern.
90 Amsterdam Seaports Guide 2010

SAIL 2010 will be the 8th edition.
Also modern navy vessels will visit SAIL 2010.
Thousands of smaller boats are sailing past the fleet.
