Amsterdam Seaports
Dynamic port region Over the years the Amsterdam port region - the four partner seaports on the North Sea Canal - has acquired a strong international position. This is in part due to its ideal location with regard to the major shipping routes and logistic hubs in northwestern Europe. Our port region includes numerous top-quality companies that jointly provide around 55,000 jobs, and have an added value of approximately three billion euros. It is quite an achievement that, despite the economic downturn, the Amsterdam port region has managed to realise a modest yet structural increase in storage and transhipment since 2010. The ports of Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Beverwijk and Zaanstad closed the year 2012 with a 1.6% rise in transhipment. Total transhipment amounted to some 95 million tonnes, according to the provisional figures. Transhipment in the Amsterdam port increased by 3% compared to 2011, to 77 million tonnes.
INNOVATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE The Amsterdam port region has become one of the most important petrol ports in the world, and the large terminals have got the blending for clients worldwide down to a fine art. The opening of the Vopak terminal in the Africa harbour (‘Afrikahaven’) in October 2011 has further strengthened this position. We should also take into account the investments that took place at Oiltanking, BP, EuroTank, NuStar, Gulf Oil and Hydrocarbon Hotel over the past few years. Together with Biodiesel Amsterdam and Vesta Biofuels, producers of clean biodiesel as motor fuel, they form a very strong cluster.
due to the excellent cooperation between local government, port authorities, the tourist sector, terminals and nautical service providers. As a result, Amsterdam and IJmuiden will welcome around 190 ocean cruisers in 2013 and the Dutch capital will accommodate no less than 1500 river cruisers. This is one of the reasons why Viking Cruises will be hosting the simultaneous launch of six luxury river cruisers with lengths of 135 metres in Amsterdam this coming spring. In May 2012, IJmuiden opened its second cruise terminal in the IJmond harbour (‘IJmondhaven’) to accommodate vessels up to 295 metres. One of the major events in Amsterdam came in October when Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) welcomed the largest ever cruise vessel, the 320-metre Celebrity Reflection.
With its focus on biodiesel, Amsterdam underlines a sustainable, innovative character which is further expressed in the 65 MW of wind turbines in the port area and the shore power connections for inland vessels and river cruisers. Additionally, OBA Bulk Terminal started the transhipment of the first 100,000 tons of wood pellets from Canada and the US in May 2012. This biomass will be used as clean fuel in coal-fired power stations.
A proper infrastructure is of the essence in the ports of Amsterdam, and work never stops in that respect. The preparations for the new sea locks in IJmuiden (length: 500 metres, width: 65 metres, draught: 18 metres) are steadily continuing in order to accommodate the first seagoing vessels in 2019. In addition, the opening of the second Coen Tunnel and the new Westrandweg road will provide even better connections between the Amsterdam port region, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam port. The partnership between the Dutch mainports is set to increase even further.
OFFSHORE OPPORTUNITIES
THE BENEFITS OF PRIVATISATION
The port region is also continuing to develop into a cluster of offshore companies for both classic oil & gas extraction and the construction of wind turbine parks in the North Sea. The intensive cooperation within promotional organisation AYOP (Amsterdam IJmuiden Offshore Port) is aimed at optimising the use of the available infrastructure on the North Sea Canal (quays and storage facilities in particular) for the assembly and transport of wind turbines.
On the eve of 2013, Amsterdam city council made a crucial decision to privatise the Port of Amsterdam. This will enable the port authorities to be more decisive and take on the competition with regard to cargo flows. Nearly all port authorities in Northwestern Europe have already been privatised, and the largest European port (Rotterdam) has achieved good results since it was privatised in 2004. An example is the faster realisation of large-scale projects such as the construction of the Maasvlakte 2 industrial area.
The construction of a new wind park of 150 MW in block Q-10 off the Dutch coast, due to become operational in 2015, is also creating new opportunities. Another positive development is the opening of the new factory of Airborne Oil & Gas in the IJmond harbour (‘IJmondhaven’) in early 2012, which resulted in 150 high-quality jobs. Airborne produces high-tech synthetic components for oil & gas extraction at considerable depths.
INCREASE IN CRUISE VESSELS
I am convinced that the privatisation of the Amsterdam port will increase the dynamics and stimulate cooperation with other Dutch seaports. It is a development that we welcome with open arms.
Space precludes me from being able to cover all sectors, but we must make room to mention sea and river cruises, which have enjoyed impressive growth in recent years. This was partly

PORT GUIDE 2013 / INTRODUCTION
The Amsterdam T
he Amsterdam metropolitan area includes both the famous Dutch capital city and the increasingly important municipalities that surround it.
Ask the managers of international companies in Amsterdam what sets this region apart from other interesting options for doing business in Europe and you will receive many different answers. Some will stress the fact that nearly all European multinational companies are represented in Amsterdam, others comment on the international mindset of people in Amsterdam, while a third group will talk about the multicultural strengths of the city. Then there are those who praise the excellent physical and digital networks, or the inspiring energy of this centuries-old trading city with its rich cultural heritage. All these are true and yet Amsterdam has still more qualities to offer. Anyone who visits the city and tastes its unique atmosphere can vouch for that fact. As one American entrepreneur writes: “Amsterdam offers all the advantages of a cosmopolitan city and business centre, but retains its intimate scale.
MAJOR TRANSIT PORT The Amsterdam port region is a major transit port for dry, liquid and break bulk, containerised and roll-on/roll-off cargoes destined for or originating from the European mainland. But with the shifting of the economic focus in Europe, an extra dimension has emerged. In their search for an ideal operating base to coordinate and consolidate their activities on the European continent, more and more companies are choosing the Amsterdam region for their Pan-European head office. Meanwhile, some 2,000 foreign enterprises have settled in the Amsterdam region. They experience the advantages of the Dutch capital’s financial, business, 6

logistics, creative and IT services. Crucially, there is also the cluster effect created by the nearby international air and seaports. The strength of Amsterdam is also defined to a considerable extent by its compact scale. There are more than 350 million European consumers within 1,000 kilometres of Amsterdam and the region is eminently equipped to distribute and supply transport and passenger flows to and from this second-largest consumer market in the world. In close vicinity is a large port complex where all types of cargo can be handled, good inland waterways, fine road and rail connections, and an airport with an extensive network of global connections. Dutch ports perform very well in terms of transhipment speed, reliability of logistic services and cost effectiveness. The customs authorities developed an advanced and highly automated cargo clearing system, a forerunner to the future European Customs system. They also pioneered a bonded warehousing system, resulting in time-savings and transhipment cost reductions.
BROADBAND INTERNET Amsterdam is well connected in other ways too, with the Netherlands having the

third highest concentration of broadband internet connections in Europe. This has encouraged the growth of many innovative IT companies and their presence ensures continued progress in the field of data transport. In addition, a fair and transparent tax climate plays a role in the attractiveness of Amsterdam as an international business location. The cost of living is very reasonable compared to the British, French or German capitals. People in Amsterdam are friendly, hospitable, cooperative and helpful, and almost all can communicate in the English language. As a city, Amsterdam has some 800,000 inhabitants, but the entire metropolitan area, including the surrounding municipalities, brings the total to more than 1.5 million. The community organisations are efficient and down-to-earth with a positive and helpful approach. Amsterdam enjoys a rich tradition as an international centre for social and cultural innovation. The renowned VOC (East India Company) was set up more than 400 years ago as the very first globally operating stock company. Share trading was ‘invented’ and a stock exchange established to meet the capital demands of this multinational company. This spirit of innovation

is still very much alive in Amsterdam today.
INTERNATIONAL ORIENTATION Creative impulses also contribute to another quality which characterises Amsterdam and its citizens: Its international orientation. The Dutch way of doing business is based upon an ability to build bridges between different cultures. This has also become a way of life in Amsterdam, with its nearly 200 different nationalities. The composition and capacities of the local professional population reflect this as Amsterdam’s multilingual, multicultural, tolerant and independent-minded society gears towards finding a consensus. www.amsterdam.nl

PORT GUIDE 2013 / INTRODUCTION
The seaports of Amsterdam: IJMUIDEN
T
he Amsterdam area comprises four major seaports complementing each other's facilities and services. The spacious deep sea port of Amsterdam itself serves transhipment and logistics companies that operate on a more personal and client-oriented way compared to the three largest European ports (Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg).
The port of Zaanstad is situated north of Amsterdam, while west of the city in the North Sea coastal area are the two ports of IJmuiden and Beverwijk. These are situated at the entrance to the North Sea Canal where the steel and paper industry, short sea shipping, fishing, offshore (including wind energy), ferry and cruise traffic are all thriving.
Entering the port area from the North Sea, IJmuiden is a rapidly growing tidal port with three port basins. Its harbour is designed for short sea shipping, reefer warehousing and offshore oil, gas and wind energy supply activities. IJmuiden is Europe’s largest fisheries centre, a cruise and ferry port and an offshore base at the same time. It is also an industrial city, with the Tata Steel complex located on the north bank of the port entrance.
BEVERWIJK East of the spacious sea locks, Beverwijk is the first port on the North Sea Canal. It is a general cargo port handling agricultural products, scrap metals, offshore
BEVERWIJK

The four ports in the Amsterdam area handle a combined total of some 95 million tons of cargo. After Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg, this makes Amsterdam the fourth largest in Europe. As a versatile cargo handling and transport centre, Amsterdam Seaports welcomes practically all types of goods with the notable exception of crude oil (there are no refineries in the area). The terminals handle dry, liquid and break bulk, container and Ro/Ro cargo.
AMSTERDAM Amsterdam is by far the largest port of the four. Deep-water quays as well as facilities along the rail and road links are available at reasonable terms. Companies have recently settled in the new port area, west of the city, among others in the Africa harbour (‘Afrikahaven’) port basin area. Along its 3,600-metre quay is a zone for new cargo handling activities and – further away from the waterfront – distribution and logistics activities. Near the city centre the modern Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) accommodates between 140 and 150 large cruise vessels annually, while 1,400 tot 1,500 river cruise vessels per year also call at Amsterdam.

Four into one does go materials, timber and timber products. The port is often called the ‘potato capital of Europe’ as large quantities of Dutch seed potatoes are exported via Beverwijk, while Mediterranean potatoes are imported. Both IJmuiden and Beverwijk are centres for cold and frozen warehousing of fish, meat, poultry, fruit and vegetables.
ZAANSTAD Located on the north bank of the North Sea Canal, Zaanstad is the Netherlands’ main centre for the processing, storage and distribution of foodstuffs. The industrial area of the city of Zaandam also houses major packing and
construction industries, and there are signifcant timber import activities in the port. www.portofamsterdam.nl www.zeehaven.nl www.beverwijk.nl www.zaanstad.nl

PORT GUIDE 2013 / PORTS
Amsterdam: Europe’s
T
he port of Amsterdam, the fourth largest in Europe, is geared to handle virtually all types of cargo and ships. Cargo handling companies and terminal operators are flexible, their labour force is highly skilled, and stevedores, shipbrokers, logistics and distribution specialists are geared to provide a first class service.
Many Amsterdam terminal operators have recently expanded or invested in new terminal equipment to improve their performance and become even more competitive compared to other ports. Several advanced cargo handling systems have been adapted to the benefit of companies and clients alike. Among the highlights are United Stevedores Amsterdam (USA), a deepsea multipurpose container terminal and multimodal distribution centre, the VCK Scandia Terminal (Ro/Ro), the allweather Waterland Terminal, the dry-bulk terminals with heavy duty gantries and floating cranes, the recently expanded tank farms, and the bustling cruise terminals. The ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam 10

have jointly developed Portbase, a comprehensive Port Community System that is connected to the customs clearing system, immigration and other authorities. This is a superb example of how Amsterdam is leading the way in forward thinking.
THE ‘A’ PORTS The latest layout innovation for the Amsterdam port west of the city are the ‘A’ port basins, named after the world’s continents. On the America harbour (‘Amerikahaven’) quays you will find container, liquid and dry bulk terminals. The Africa harbour (‘Afrikahaven’) port basin was completed in 2001 and its size (1,900 m x 350 m with a 15.5 m depth) makes it suitable for tankers, bulk and container carriers. The total area of the site, including green areas, roads and other infrastructure, is more than 300 hectares. A quarter of this area has been reserved for new ventures such as the Rietlanden coal terminal. Vopak, the world’s largest independent tank storage operator, has completed a 35 ha and 1.2 million cbm tank farm on this location by October 2011, while the east quay has been reserved for future container handling.

t the entrance to the North Sea Canal leading to Amsterdam, the port of IJmuiden has developed into a major part of the Amsterdam Seaport region. IJmuiden is one of Europe’s major fishery centres and one of the EU’s leading refrigerated edibles and reefer warehousing centres, next to servicing offshore oil, gas and wind energy companies.
Zeehaven IJmuiden NV, the IJmuiden Port Authority, consists of three port basins, serving as a home port for its fresh fishery fleet, while many fishing craft from other Dutch ports and abroad also discharge catches at the IJmuiden fish auction. IJmuiden is also home port to many pelagic fish companies and frozen fish is increasingly imported by reefer or stuffed containers. Inland barges move fish to the hinterland, with instant delivery by truck. One of the quays has been equipped with a number of reefer points and container traffic is building up quickly. An extensive restructuring plan will see the existing port area adapted to the latest requirements of refrigerated cargo handling in the near future.
OFFSHORE Offshore oil, gas and wind exploration and production companies in the Dutch sector of the North Sea have chosen IJmuiden as an onshore base for supply and maintenance. The construction of offshore wind parks at sea is increasing in importance. 12

INDUSTRY IJmuiden is home to the largest industry in the Netherlands, the Tata Steel works (subsidiary of the Indian industrial conglomerate Tata). Bulk carriers supply Tata Steel with ore and coal at its own deep sea quays, while steel products are loaded on its export quays. A cement plant is located next to the steel works and a paper mill produces quality paper nearby, with pulp being supplied by bulk carriers as a raw material.
PASSENGER SHIPPING Last but not least, IJmuiden is a cruise and ferry port with daily sailings to Newcastle on the North East coast of England, and over fourty cruise ships calling during the summer season. There is ample accommodation available for other daily ferry services to supplement this passenger and cargo ferry connection. www.zeehaven.nl www.velsen.nl www.kvsa.nl

C
ompleted in 2007, IJmuiden’s third port basin is located on the southern side of the port entrance to IJmuiden and Amsterdam. Called IJmond harbour (‘IJmondhaven’), the port area has a quay length of 700 metres and a depth of 11 metres. It is the perfect spot for port-related companies to establish a branch.
The development of the IJmond harbour started over a decade ago when Zeehaven IJmuiden NV (the IJmuiden Port Authority) realised that many companies were looking for more room to accommodate their growing activities. As a major fishing port, IJmuiden needed additional refrigerated and frozen warehousing capacity for the storage of fish products.
storing sections and parts for wind energy parks under construction in the North Sea. Thanks to its close proximity to the open sea, it is ideally situated for cold-store activities, short sea trade and offshore services. In addition to the existing DFDS Seaways ferry connection to Newcastle, accommodation is available for another daily ferry service, for example to the UK. The deepening of the canal in April 2011 made the IJmond harbour accessible to ocean cruisers with lengths up to 300 metres. This underlines the importance of the opening of a second cruise terminal in IJmuiden, the Felison Cruise Terminal, in May 2012. With the support of Zeehaven IJmuiden NV and MSCIJ real estate department, Vestas Offshore Maintenance opened a brand-new office and warehouse in the IJmond harbour in 2009. The construction of two nearby offshore wind turbine parks was the main reason for Vestas to locate in IJmuiden. Situated in the IJmond Harbour, Vestas Offshore’s new efficient building consists of a large warehouse for storing wind turbine parts plus two floors for its 40 employees. The latest edition to the IJmond Harbour are Airborne Oil & Gas, which produces high quality composite pipes for use at great depths (2,000 metres and more) in the offshore oil and gas industry from the second quarter of 2012, tugboat company Iskes Towage & Salvage and various offshore companies.

ata Steel IJmuiden manufactures hot-rolled, cold-rolled and metallic-coated steel for many industries in Europe and beyond.
The company was established in 1918 on the north bank of the IJmuiden harbour mouth. This gives it an enormous advantage over other steel companies as Tata Steel can receive raw materials – ore and coal – directly on its premises. Dry bulk carriers up to 200,000 tons dwt berth at its deep sea quays, while Tata Steel’s products are shipped from its general cargo quay or all-weather terminal for hinterland transport by inland waterway or rail. T
he Amsterdam port region's dry and liquid bulk cargo throughput has risen to such an extent in recent years that the port area has developed into the leading European fuel transhipment port. In addition to the storage and distribution of fuels, value-added activities by the terminals in Amsterdam, such as blending and upgrading have made Amsterdam a port of increasing interest to the solid and liquid fuel markets. With oil and coal products accounting for some 70% of transhipments, the ports of Amsterdam can truly be called an energy port. Amsterdam is also the second largest European coal transhipment port, and the Amsterdam port region has both the ambition and location to become a leader in sustainable and renewable energy.
estimated 24 million tons by the year 2020. A relatively new mooring facility west of the IJmuiden locks will discharge deep drafting bulk carriers directly to inland barges or coastal bulkers. As soon as a carrier’s draft falls below the 14-metre mark it is allowed to pass the IJmuiden sea locks and head for one of the two major Amsterdam coal terminals, OBA Bulk Terminal and Rietlanden Terminals.
LIQUID BULK Liquid bulk is nearing the 40 million tons per year mark, 90% of which is refined oil products (fuels). Vopak’s 1.2 million cbm tank farm in the Africa harbour (‘Afrikahaven’) port basin means the total Amsterdam oil product turnover figures will rise in the coming years. January 2012 saw the opening ceremony for the new Hydrocarbon Hotel tank terminal (total capacity 140,000 cbm), a joint project by the Netherlands’ based North Sea Group and UK company Blue Ocean Associates Ltd. The tanks will be used for exporting and blending petrol and petrol components and biofuels.
OFFSHORE DRY BULK Coal makes up some 40% of the annual 46 million tons of dry bulk transhipped in the ports of Amsterdam. The closure of German coal mines in recent years has enabled the dry bulk terminals to expand from 15.5 million tons in 2011 to an
The ports of IJmuiden and Beverwijk serve as a base port for offshore oil and gas production activities in the North Sea. A number of drilling rigs and production platforms are operating offshore. Crude oil produced from the North Sea is moved ashore by an 80-km pipeline to storage tanks in Amsterdam where it is dehydrated and desalinated prior to transportation to the refineries. Jet A1 fuel arrives by inland tanker to Oiltanking Amsterdam, which operates a 16-km underground pipeline to transport kerosene to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Zeehaven IJmuiden NV (the IJmuiden Port Authority) has ample deep water quay space available to accommodate offshore rigs.

PORT GUIDE 2013 / ENERGY SUSTAINABLE ENERGY
WIND FOR POWER
The number of companies generating sustainable energy in the Amsterdam port region is growing rapidly. Waste and Energy Company (AEB) generates energy by incinerating waste, 48% of which is biomass. The power plants have a capacity of 124 megawatt, producing 1 million megawatt hours annually. This provides electricity for some 320,000 households, 75% of the City of Amsterdam’s total.
With its abundance of wind, the Netherlands – which has employed windmills for centuries – now uses a steadily growing proportion of wind power to generate electricity. A fine example is the wind turbines in the Port of Amsterdam with an installed capacity of 65 megawatt, equivalent to the electricity needs of 40,000 households.
The new Greenmills plant produces sustainable biofuels and green energy from organic waste products such as frying oil. Biofuels is the collective name for different types of fuels that are made from organic (plant and animal) matter. The plant will convert 100,000 tons organic waste into 115 million litres of sustainable biodiesel and 25 million cbm of biogas. In 2010 the green light was given for a new 200,000-ton biodiesel plant for Vesta Biofuels Amsterdam on the south side of the America harbour (‘Amerikahaven’), which is due to go into production soon. Vesta Biofuels will process a wide variety of feedstock, including rape seed oil, certified palm oil, algae oil, processed frying fat and used oil residue from kitchens. The port of Amsterdam, which deals with biomass from countries including Canada, the US and Brazil, expects to tranship and store six millions tons of biomass by 2020. OBA Bulk Terminal Amsterdam last year handled its first transhipments of wood pellets and expects to see more biomass arrive in the coming tears. May 2012 saw the Dutch company handle its first biomass shipments when 47,000 tons of wood pellets arrived from Vancouver. OBA can store up to 110,000 tons of biomass. Other bulk terminals in the Amsterdam port region (Maja Stevedores and IGMA) also expect to receive biomass shipments in the near future.

Two wind energy parks have been built in the North Sea in the vicinity of IJmuiden over the last decade, providing a total capacity of some 230 megawatts. During construction, the IJmond Harbour (‘IJmondhaven’) in the port of IJmuiden was used as a supply base for the masts, generator units and rotor blades awaiting shipment to the offshore windmill park location. More offshore wind energy parks are projected and the IJmuiden port will remain an important offshore supply base for this sector. www.portofamsterdam.nl www.zeehaven.nl

iltanking Amsterdam (OTA) is the largest tank storage terminal in the port of Amsterdam. Its main activity is the storage, transhipment and blending of petrol products for clients who are mainly located in the US, West Africa and the Far East. OTA also plays an important role in the import of diesel, gasoil and jet fuel in Northwest Europe.
The storage capacity of the terminal in the America harbour (‘Amerikahaven’) is approximately 1.6 cubic metres (m3), divided over 83 tanks with floating roofs varying in size between 4,000 and 61,500 m3. In these tanks Oiltanking Amsterdam stores a wide range of petrol products as well as gasoil, diesel, naphtha and Jet A1. A relatively small activity is the storage of molasses, a viscous by-product from the sugar industry. Oiltanking has 17 jetties, of which six can dock seagoing vessels with a maximum deadweight tonnage of 100,000 dwt. OTA in
Amsterdam employs nearly 90 people. The premises of Oiltanking Amsterdam also include a bio-diesel factory owned by Mercuria. In addition, options are available for expanding the terminal itself and on the adjacent grounds.
TWO IMPORTANT PIPELINES Oiltanking Amsterdam owns two vital pipelines; an 80-km pipeline that pipes in crude petroleum from various production platforms on the North Sea, and a second 20-km pipeline that connects the terminal to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, one of Europe's top five airports in terms of passengers and cargo. The latter pipeline supplies nearly 50 percent of the airport’s total kerosene demand. Additionally, OTA stores part of the strategic oil supply kept by the Dutch government. www.oiltanking.com

The through-put and storage terminal also includes ten berths for seagoing and inland vessels on two finger piers, one quay and one dock which are easily accessible via the North Sea Channel. Some 4,550 inland vessels and around 250 seagoing ships moor at the facilities each year. The company continuously invests in environmental and safety measures and innovations. Examples at Vopak Terminal Amsterdam Westpoort include the advanced vapour return system (DVI) which processes vapours released during the (un)loading of seagoing and inland tankers. The storage company only welcomes tankers at its new terminals that have a vapour return system connection. Moreover, all 41 tanks and pipes above water are equipped with a leakage detection system to minimise emissions from volatile organic substances. The tanks also have an internal floating roof and a fixed dome roof.
PETROLEUM HARBOUR In addition to the Africa harbour, Vopak also has an ‘older’ terminal in the Petroleum harbour (‘Petroleumhaven’) with a capacity of 85,000 m3, 21 storage tanks and two quays for seagoing and inland vessels. www.vopak.com

T
he storage capacity of BP Amsterdam Terminal (BAT) consists of approximately one million cubic metres divided over 77 tanks. As one of the largest British Petroleum import and export terminals worldwide, the terminal in the America harbour (‘Amerikahaven’) and Australia harbour (‘Australiëhaven’) stores items such as petrol products, gas oil and components, diesel, propane and butane.
Four years ago, BP Amsterdam Terminal finalised a substantial investment programme of 65 million euros. The main purpose was to increase the through-put capacity of the terminal by developing extra jetty capacity for seagoing and inland vessels. BP also aimed to reduce harmful emissions to a minimum by making major environmental investments. 28

BP Amsterdam Terminal built a new jetty where a seagoing vessel and four inland takers can moor simultaneously. As a result, the company now has three jetties for seagoing vessels and nine for inland vessels. The terminal also has an automated loading station that can accommodate up to ten tank lorries at a time, which provide local and regional petrol stations with petrol, gas oil and LPG. With regard to its environmental investments, BP Amsterdam connected its new jetty to a modern vapour processing installation, having connected its existing jetties to the same system in 2009. In 2010, BP started the large-scale maintenance of its water purification system, and it is also in the process of equipping all pumping tanks with a liquid-proof layer. Other activities involve improving the tanks, pipes and road network. www.bp.com

NuStar Terminals
N
uStar Terminals has a storage capacity of 600,000 m続 distributed over 45 tanks in the port of Amsterdam. From here the company stores fuel oil, diesel fuel, petrol and biofuels. The terminal has two moorings for seagoing vessels of up to 80,000 dwt and five jetties for barges.
In recent years, NuStar has invested considerable sums in environmental and safety systems. For instance, the tank storage company has linked all interconnected tanks and jetties to a modern vapour processing system, which is active even when no vessels are loading or unloading. Since this is a completely closed system from which virtually no harmful vapour can escape, the storage tanks do not require floating roofs. NuStar has also liquid-proofed any locations from which products can inadvertently be released, such as pumping and loading & unloading bays. NuStar Terminals works to significantly reduce energy consumption at the terminal. For instance, tanks and pipes were insulated wherever necessary in 2010. Another example is the plan to install automatic controls for the three major thermal boilers which heat the fuel oil tanks. NuStar Terminals is part of the American concern NuStar Energy, which owns 84 storage terminals in the US, Canada, Mexico, St Eustatius, the UK, Turkey and the Netherlands. www.nustarenergy.com

arms on the jetties to expedite the (un)loading of tankers. It is expected that the investment will increase the transhipment capacity of the terminal by 50 percent over the coming ten years. Euro Tank Amsterdam has also taken substantial environmental measures since 2008 including the design of a new water treatment system for precipitation and the construction of two new vapour return systems with a capacity of 2,500 m3 and 5,000 m3 per hour respectively. Vapour return systems reclaim petrol fumes developed during the loading process of seagoing vessels, trucks and rail tankers to prevent emissions into the atmosphere. In 2006 Euro Tank Amsterdam became part of VTTI, an international concern for the storage of energy products. VTTI owns 11 oil storage terminals around the world with a joint storage capacity of six million cubic metres, with Euro Tank Amsterdam being the largest. www.vtti.com

ulf Oil Nederland has had a petrol terminal for storage and distribution in the Amsterdam port since October 2011. In advance of construction, Port of Amsterdam had to reclaim two hectares in the Petroleum harbour (‘Petroleumhaven’).
As a so-called downstream company, Gulf Oil Nederland buys petrol products via long-term contracts with large refineries instead of having its own production capacity. The new quay accommodates inland vessels (lighters) and seagoing vessels with a draft of up to 11 metres. The
storage capacity of the eight storage tanks (with a height and diameter of 22.5 metres) is 60,000 m3. The terminal also includes a loading system for four tanker trucks. In case of a calamity, the fire extinguishing system can provide over 37,500 litres of water a minute. From the Amsterdam port, the tankers supply products to around 400 petrol stations in the Netherlands and several hundred stations in Belgium and Germany. The terminal is supplied with petrol products by means of four lighters. Gulf Oil also intends to start offering vessel-to-vessel transhipment from seagoing to inland vessels and lighters, including a filter system. In Amsterdam Gulf Oil works closely with its sister company MAIN (Maritieme Afvalstoffen Inzameling Nederland). OBA Bulk Terminal Amsterdam
O
BA Bulk Terminal Amsterdam has two storage and transhipment terminals for dry bulk in the West harbour (‘Westhaven’): The Main Terminal and Terminal Noord (north). The total storage capacity is around three million tons, while OBA’s annual transhipment amounts to around 12 million tons, including around ten million tons of coal, 800,000 tons of agri-bulk, 500,000 tons of minerals and, since May 2012, biomass. A large number of modern gantry and floating cranes including a new 60-ton gantry crane are used for fast (un)loading of seagoing vessels.
Major clients include coal producers and traders, electricity companies, the steel industry, animal feed companies, the cement industry and the chemicals and paper sectors. Most clients are located in Germany, North-East France, the UK and the Netherlands. OBA has 600,000 m3 of open storage facilities and five covered facilities totalling 25,000 m3. These warehouses are within the reach of the gantry cranes, making it possible for the grabber to enter the warehouses directly from above. OBA also has a transport belt connection to the nearby 630 megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station. The terminal has approximately 130 permanent employees. To be able to pass through the locks in IJmuiden, OBA reduces the draft of Capesize bulk carriers from a maximum of 17.80 to 13.70 metres. This is realised by means of ship-to-

PORT GUIDE 2013 / DRY BULK
The America harbour location can accommodate Capesize bulk carriers with a maximum draught of 15 metres, while the Asia harbour allows vessels with a draught up to 11.5 metres. These facilities can also load two goods trains a day, and have a weighbridge for trucks and goods carriages. In the West harbour the company has facilities with a surface area of 100,000 m2, as well as 350 metres of quay for seagoing vessels with draughts up to 15 metres. The coal storage capacity amounts to 500,000 tons, including facilities for blending, screening and iron removal. The Africa harbour is home to the newest terminal of 300,000 m2 and some 1,150 metres of quay, plus a two-million ton storage capacity. These Rietlanden facilities also have a loading capacity of five goods trains per 24 hours.
Ninety percent of the internal transport at the terminals is by conveyor belt, which limits dust issues. Rietlanden has also made other investments in environmental measures, including a monitoring system with air pollution detectors that measure coal dust, covering the coal with cellulose, spraying transhipment processes and purifying drain and rain water. In addition, the company’s cranes, launchers and conveyor belts use low-sulphur fuel. www.rietlanden.com

TRAY CONCEPT IJmuiden and Amsterdam have developed a logistical concept that ensures components are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. At the quays of the port basins connected to the open sea in IJmuiden, wind turbine components, foundations and cables can be stored with round-the-clock accessibility to ensure the highest operational efficiency. A ‘serving tray’ so to speak of turbine components, needed for at least a week’s worth of installation time, is constantly on offer along the quay side at the open sea locations. High quality assembly and storage space is available at locations along the North Sea Canal and in the port of Amsterdam. These additional areas can also be used for storage during bad weather periods. A constant flow of turbine components and equipment can be organised from these places to feed and fill ‘the tray’ at the open sea locations.
AYOP NETWORK Over the years, Amsterdam IJmuiden Offshore Port (AYOP) has developed into a unique network organisation. Its major objective is to provide promotional support to the regional offshore industries and to promote the area. As well as oil & gas, offshore wind, port-related and maritime industries, AYOP’s partner list includes government bodies. www.ayop.com

PORT GUIDE 2013 / FOOD
Food throughout the port region
T
he greater Amsterdam port area includes all major Dutch food industries, adding substantially to the total of cargo handled. Together the basic foodstuffs and exports of finished products exceed 10 million tons, the majority of which is agribulk (including animal fodder). Amsterdam is the world’s largest cocoa port, while the major food industries are centred in the Zaan region, northwest of Amsterdam.
The food industry was established in this region in the sixteenth century, initially powered by windmills. Then as now, the sector was marked by a combination of high skill levels and an entrepreneurial spirit. Many multinationals have either located in Amsterdam or Zaanstad or taken over Dutch companies. Leading examples include ADM Cocoa, AHOLD, United Biscuits, Tate & Lyle and Cargill.
IJmuiden has also become Europe’s number one fish centre. This is due both to its large trawler fleet and the significant pelagic fish and fish product trade. Many reefer warehouses stockpile deep frozen and cooled fish products and foodstuffs. Finally on the food front, Beverwijk is the major world port for the export of seed potatoes.
WORLD’S LEADING COCOA IMPORT CENTRE As the world’s largest cocoa port, Amsterdam handles between 600,000 and 700,000 tons of cocoa beans per year – about 15 to 20 percent of the global production. West Africa (Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon) is the main source of Amsterdam’s cocoa imports, followed by Malaysia and Indonesia. Cocoa

PORT GUIDE 2013 / FOOD
beans arrive in bulk and container shipments and are stored by warehousing companies (CWT Sitos Commodities, Vollers Holland, Katoen Natie, DSV) from where it is transported to processing plants in Amsterdam, Zaanstad (Cargill Ccoa & Chocolate, ADM Cocoa, Dutch Cocoa and Jan Schoemaker) and elsewhere in Europe, particularly Switzerland and Germany. The cocoa season runs from October to March, when harvesting reaches its peak in the producing countries. The processing industries turn the beans into chocolate mass, cocoa powder and butter. These semi-finished products are exported to the many European chocolate factories. Companies such as ADM Cocoa, Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate, Dutch Cocoa and Jan Schoemaker play leading roles in this trade.
AGRIBULK: A MAJOR AMSTERDAM CARGO FLOW Amsterdam is Europe’s leading agribulk port. Representing around 15 percent of all food shipments through the seaports of the Le Havre-Hamburg range, the commodities handled by Amsterdam include grains, derivates, animal fodder, cocoa and molasses. Amsterdam’s leading position in the food sector is due to the presence in the area of bulk stevedores such as IGMA and Maja Stevedores. Amsterdam offers a wide variety of discharge and storage facilities.
THE DRINKS ARE ON US: JUICES, WINES AND SPIRITS Tank storage firms stock and bottle wine, sherry and spirits for European retail chains and wine merchants in and around Amsterdam. Although representing only a small proportion of the overall annual figure of around 38 million tons of liquid cargo, beverages are an important commodity in the Amsterdam ports. Wines are shipped in by seagoing and road tankers. Amsterdam and Zaandam companies take care of bottling the wines and the distribution throughout Europe. Citrus juices arrive from South America by tanker, specially dehydrated as a juice extract and cooled at 0º C. One terminal is specialised in spirits and ethanol for industrial use, while the derivative
molasses is stored in tanks equipped with heating installations.
IJMUIDEN: EUROPE’S FISH CENTRE The port of IJmuiden on the Dutch North Sea coast is one of Europe’s leading fish and fish product centres. In addition to fish harvested in the North Sea, large trawlers catch off the coasts of Norway, Iceland and West Africa. Traders buy fresh fish, landed by Dutch and foreign trawlers, at the IJmuiden fish auction and supply their clients in the different European markets the very same day. A computerised internet fish auction system enables them to bid from their own offices rather than coming to the auction. IJmuiden is also home port to a number of pelagic fish companies. Zeehaven IJmuiden NV is the port authority for the three port basins, serving as a home port for a large fishing fleet and a primary port of call for many non-Dutch fishing craft. As a major EU-fishery centre, IJmuiden has become one of the leading refrigerated warehousing centres for other edibles too. Over two million square metres of refrigerated and frozen warehouse space is available for the storage of fish and fish products.

PORT GUIDE 2013 / BREAK BULK AND GENERAL CARGO
And more types of cargo
FORESTRY PRODUCTS
FERTILISER
As the ideal return cargo for road hauliers, timber is increasingly transported by truck from Northern European countries. The majority of the newsprint comes from Finland and Sweden, with heavy rolls being stockpiled and distributed throughout the Netherlands and adjacent countries. The regional paper industry processes about half a million tons into quality paper. Pulp is imported via the ports of Amsterdam from North America, Finland, Spain and Portugal.
Fertiliser has been produced for over a century in the Amsterdam port region. The raw material superphosphate is shipped in from the eastern Mediterranean area. Farmers all over Europe use the fertile granulates from Amsterdam, which are mainly transported to hinterland destinations by barge.
SAND AND GRAVEL
Aluminium and zinc in nuggets or bars are regularly shipped in from Norway and Finland as a raw material for various products made in Western Europe. Aluminium and zinc are handled at different terminals (which act as metal stock storage areas) before being shipped to European destinations. Steel products made in the Tata Steel blast furnaces at IJmuiden are also transhipped from other steel producers via the ports of Amsterdam.
Amsterdam is also a major port for building construction materials. Sand and gravel dredged in the North Sea serves as a raw material for the building industry and the production of concrete products such as paving stones and prefab constructions. Granite extracted from the rocky coasts of the UK (Scotland) and Norway is discharged and stored in the Amsterdam bulk terminals. Here it is sieved, screened and sorted into granulate sizes, then transported by barge to building sites. Finally, some ten million tons of sand and gravel produced in the Far East is imported annually.
MINERALS Around half a million tons of industrial minerals originating from Australia, South Africa, the Mediterranean and Scandinavia are imported each year. In the offshore industry, minerals are used for exploration drillings, while white minerals serve as filling substance for the plastics industry. Special types of minerals are ‘micronised’ to a very fine floury substance and transported in bags to ceramics companies. 44
February 2013
MOLASSES As a derivative from the sugar refining industry, molasses is a raw material for a variety of animal feed products and for distilling industrial alcohol. Specialised forwarding and warehousing companies handle and store molasses in the Amsterdam port.
METALS, STEEL AND SCRAP IRON
CHEMICALS A number of chemical logistics companies are active in the port area. IMOclassified cargoes are stored in certified warehouses before shipment. The port hosts a large cluster of specialised chemical companies.
AUTOMOTIVE LOGISTICS Japanese carmaker Nissan distributes spare car parts throughout the entire European Union from its Amsterdam port centre. Another Japanese company, Hitachi, assembles excavators in the port area. A regular supply of parts, originating from all over Europe, China and Japan, feeds its Amsterdam production facility. The end product is orange-coloured excavators that are sold in the Netherlands and abroad. At the same time, vast numbers of second-hand cars leave the Amsterdam port to begin a new life in developing countries.
PROJECT CARGO, HEAVY LIFT The Amsterdam port region is very suitable for the loading and discharging of heavy or voluminous cargoes because the entire port region is tide and current free. From container cranes, reactors, breweries and gas turbines to generators for power plants and luxury superyachts, the range of heavy lift requirements is wide indeed.

PORT GUIDE 2013 / CRUISE AND FERRIES
Cruise and ferry terminals
A
msterdam port region, which includes the ports of Amsterdam and IJmuiden, has become one of the major sea cruise destinations in northwest Europe. In 2012, the three passenger terminals handled a combined total of 189 calls carrying 353,000 passengers, plus 365 ferry sailings (DFDS Seaways’ daily service IJmuidenNewcastle) and some 1,370 river cruise calls in Amsterdam (280,000 passengers).
The cruise industry is going from strength to strength in the Amsterdam port region, with a year-on-year rise in the number of cruises to the North Sea Canal area. The Amsterdam Cruise Port (ACP) association anticipates a major increase in the number of cruise ships arriving at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), the Felison Terminal and the new Felison Cruise Terminal in IJmuiden. Of the 147 bookings received for Amsterdam in 2013, some 57 are turnaround calls (cruises beginning and ending in Amsterdam) and 90 are regular cruise calls. In partnership with the Amsterdam Cruise Port (ACP) association, the three terminals are also looking for new ways to further improve their services to cruise passengers. Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), located on the banks of the river IJ near the Amsterdam city centre, can simultaneously accommodate three cruise ships. PTA welcomes some 300,000 passengers on an annual basis and efficiently docks the 140 to 150 ships arriving with these passengers. On 12 October 2012 PTA hosted the largest cruise ship ever seen in Amsterdam: The

brand-new Celebrity Reflection is 319 metres long, 37 metres wide and has a capacity of more than 3,000 passengers.
IJMUIDEN The Felison Terminal and the new Felison Cruise Terminal, both located in IJmuiden, are located outside the sea locks, making fast short calls possible. The two terminals are state of the art, providing a comfortable setting for passengers, ample parking space and luggage handling amenities. They offer excellent facilities for turnaround calls as both are very conveniently located just a short distance from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Zeehaven IJmuiden NV (the IJmuiden Port Authority) has invested considerably in deepening the IJmond harbour (‘IJmondhaven’), allowing the safe passage of cruise vessels up to 295 metres. This resulted in a sharp increase in the number of extra bookings from the Italian-based cruise line operator MSC. KVSA (Royal United Ship Agencies), which operates the Felison Terminal for cruise ships and ferries in IJmuiden, therefore decided to build a second terminal in the IJmond harbour, which opened in May 2012. The Felison Cruise Terminal is located between two docks, one of which can accommodate vessels up to 295 metres while the other is suitable for vessels up to 260 metres. The terminal itself has a floor area of 1,600 m2 and primarily services baggage handling and customs formalities. Since the opening of this new IJmuiden terminal, cruise ships have at their disposal two locations with all the latest facilities.
DFDS SEAWAYS The existing Felison Terminal in IJmuiden also handles the daily DFDS Seaways ferry service to Newcastle (UK). DFDS has been operating this service for more than 15 years and its success is reflected in a steady increase in passenger numbers from 70,000 in 1995 to around 600,000 in 2012. In addition, the two ferries King of Scandinavia and Princess Seaways carry some 25,500 freight trailers (trucks) per year and some 25,000 cars and motor vehicles. Regular shuttle buses to Amsterdam take passengers to the city centre and the airport. www.ptamsterdam.com www.felisonterminal.com www.kvsa.nl www.amsterdamcruiseport.com

CSY Ymuiden: European hub for frozen fish
C
ontainer Stevedoring Ymuiden (CSY) is a container terminal facility in the port of IJmuiden, which commenced operations in July 2011. This terminal further strengthens IJmuiden’s position at the heart of the international fishery industry.
CSY is an initiative from the Amsterdam-based Ter Haak Group and Zeehaven IJmuiden NV (the IJmuiden Port Authority). The CSY partners have close contacts with several leading fishery companies such as Cornelis Vrolijk, Parlevliet & Van der Plas and Kloosterboer. Trawlers unload the fish in IJmuiden where it is stored in the cold storage warehouses, transhipped by means of reefer containers and directly barged from IJmuiden.
The new, 30-metre wide quays accommodate inland vessels, reefers, trawlers and other seagoing vessels. Photo: Zeehaven IJmuiden NV
Barge Company Amsterdam (BCA), also part of the Ter Haak Group, transports the reefer containers on its daily services to deep sea terminals in Amsterdam, Antwerp and Rotterdam, from where shipping lines transport the fish the world over. In 2009 almost 2,500 containers of fish were transported from IJmuiden by inland vessel, and by 2010 the figure had almost doubled to 4,500. The Ter Haak Group expects to see the business grow to around 10,000 reefer containers annually in the next few years. Ter Haak’s Container Company Amsterdam (CCA) also intends to develop CSY as a supply base for offshore containers for the oil and gas industry. Located at the Haring harbour ('Haringhaven'), CSY has a container depot with service and maintenance facilities covering some 10,000 m² as well as 150 reefer points. In 2010 and 2011 Zeehaven IJmuiden NV developed the area for container transhipment. The new, 30-metre wide quays accomodate inland vessel that pick up containers of frozen fish. CSY IJmuiden is part of the Deep Sea International Frozen Fish Centre (DIFE), the strategic platform to strengthen IJmuiden’s position as frozen fish hub. www.terhaakgroup.com www.zeehaven.nl

Hinterland connections
T
he excellent connections to the European hinterland and the short 15-minute drive to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport give the ports of Amsterdam a significant lead when it comes to logistics and distribution. Over a third of all cargo flows to and from the Amsterdam port region is by inland vessel, partly due to a short and efficient route to the Rhine via the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. This enables a fast and effective service to consumers and industries in countries such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Oil products and coal make up the majority of the inland shipping transport from Amsterdam. Terminals such as Vopak, Oiltanking, BP, EuroTank, NuStar,

Hydrocarbon Hotel and Gulf Oil Netherlands use the inland waterways for the transit of oil products to the hinterland, while the two large dry bulk transhipment companies OBA Bulk Terminal and Rietlanden Terminals deploy inland vessels and push barges to transport coal to the European markets. Cargill and IGMA transport raw materials for the cattle feed industry to factories in the Netherlands and other European countries via inland shipping. Various container service companies shuttle back and forth between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp and the German hinterland several times a week. The sailing time between Amsterdam and Duisburg, Europe’s largest port inland shipping port in the Ruhr region, is only sixteen hours.
INTERMODAL NETWORK Port of Amsterdam is currently establishing a new intermodal network centred around container transfer points on industrial terrains or in inland ports, where trucks can

deliver containers for onward transport through the Netherlands on inland vessels. To meet the expected growth of the number of containers in the port of Rotterdam and strengthen the position of Amsterdam as a transfer hub for the north of the Netherlands, the network will include separate line services for large inland vessels (400-500 TEU). These barges will go back and forth between the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam (and possibly Amsterdam Schiphol Airport), from where smaller vessels will act as line services via the inland ports in the north of the country. Port of Amsterdam aims to achieve a considerable expansion in the share of inland shipping and rail cargo to further increase the sustainability of the seaport. This includes a doubling of rail transportation from 5.5 million tons (2006) to 11 million tons in 2020, for instance by the expansion and electrification of the tracks. Since 2010, the port of Amsterdam has a direct connection to the Betuwe
rail route, the main cargo line between the port of Rotterdam and the German hinterland. A new rail shuttle between Amsterdam and Duisburg is creating additional possibilities for large companies such as Tata Steel in IJmuiden, Flora Holland and the large stevedoring companies in the ports of Amsterdam, enabling them to transport products to German markets and the farthest corners of Europe.
NEW MOTORWAY AND TUNNEL A new tunnel below the North Sea Chanel (2nd Coen Tunnel) and a new motorway through the port area (‘Westrandweg’) further strenghten the combination of Schiphol Airport and the Amsterdam seaports. Both projects are due to be delivered this year (2013), and will relieve the current Amsterdam ring road and improve the connections from the port to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam. With around 50 million travellers a year (2012), Schiphol is the fourth largest European airport. It is also the third largest when it comes to cargo transport with approximately 1.5 million tons. The Amsterdam port region is Europe’s fourth seaport with some 95 million tons (2012).
ATLAS PARK Together with the Schiphol Area Development Company (SADC), Port of Amsterdam is developing the Atlas Park for major logistic services companies. Due to its central location in the port area, the industrial estate is ideal for companies that transport goods both via the water and by air. www.portofamsterdam.nl www.schipholgroup.com

Airport Seaport: The best of both worlds
T
he city of Amsterdam has the unique benefit of being home to Europe’s fourth largest seaport and fifth largest airport, with only 15 kilometres separating the two. For many international logistics companies, this combination is an important – and often decisive – reason for setting up their business in the area. Together with Rotterdam, Europe’s largest seaport, the Amsterdam region offers a very strong cluster of three hubs less than 70 kilometres apart.
The Port of Amsterdam, the regional business association ORAM and Air Cargo Nederland (ACN) established the Airport Seaport cooperative to optimise the synergies of this airport/seaport location. Its goal is to attract more cargo flows and new companies by offering the best possible business climate, with, for instance, a good infrastructure and modern IT facilities as well as locations for new offices, distribution centres and production facilities; space that is readily available in the Amsterdam area. Amsterdam Airport Seaport clearly shows the added value of the combined services of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and the Amsterdam port region. Examples include coordinated custom checks, joint innovation and research
projects (in the field of mobility, for instance) and joint professional training via uniform logistics courses in order to ensure sufficient qualified personnel for the future. Other examples of the cooperation between airport and seaport are the feasibility projects with wireless communication (Radio Frequency Identification, RFID) between Air France-KLM and the port of Amsterdam, and the fast processing of passengers at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to the cruise ships in the ports of Amsterdam and IJmuiden. One of the most strategic locations between the Amsterdam port region and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is the Atlas Park. This 110-hectare business park is mainly intended for ‘dry’ logistic service companies, contract manufacturers and assembly companies. It offers the latest facilities in the field of information technology (broadband networks), park management, security and collective personnel transport. A company such as Hitachi Construction Machinery, located in the port of Amsterdam, is a good example of how companies benefit from the Airport Seaport concept. The proximity of Schiphol Airport is extremely important to the Japanese firm as it receives clients and agents for training sessions and demonstrations on a weekly basis. www.portofamsterdam.nl www.schipholgroup.com

Maritime and logistics education and training Xxx
P
roper education and good training is the only means of being assured of a skilled and reliable labour force in the seaports of Amsterdam. The high standards of the Amsterdam work force, its skill and motivation are the result of the excellent maritime educational facilities which train people for a wide variety of jobs in the transport industry, at sea and ashore.
The Maritime Academy, based in IJmuiden, Amsterdam and several other Dutch ports, was established over a century ago, making it one of the oldest maritime training institutes in the Netherlands. Today the Academy is geared to prepare people for all modern functions at sea and in the ports. The training and education programmes range from professional seafarers and fisherman to inland waterway navigation and cargo handling. The Academy also trains operators of locks and bridges.

Courses are available at all levels, from operational port functions to schooling for waterway sailors and ship’s masters. Training is focussed on the practical side and given by highly experienced instructors using modern equipment such as training ships and advanced simulators.
A WIDE RANGE OF INTERNATIONAL COMPLEMENTARY TRAINING COURSES As the maritime sector is constantly changing and new developments come thick and fast, good staff training is vital for companies in this sector. The Academy’s lecturers and instructors are highly qualified and experienced. A regular vocational training program is provided relating to ports, shipping, fisheries, Rhine and inland shipping. The Academy also offers a wide range of international complementary training courses that are geared to current developments in the maritime industry. In close consultation with its customers, the Maritime Academy organises courses that precisely correspond to companies’ specific needs and are given by instructors from the maritime sector and the academy’s own permanent staff. In 2012, some 4,000 students from around the world participated in these vocational courses. Contract education by the Academy is ISO certified. Some courses are held on board the vessel of the participants in order to best simulate difficult situations. The Academy also offers an international course in disaster management and rescue work at sea for professionals from all over the world, including Port Facility Security Officer, Ship Sanitation, locks and bridges operating and basic and advanced courses for VTS operators. www.maritieme-academie.nl

hipbuilding is one of the oldest industries in the region and the floating dry-dock was actually invented in Amsterdam. While the industry has now disappeared in the port, two shipyards are specialised in the maintenance, repair and refitting of seagoing vessels. Voyage repairs are routine jobs around the clock.
SHIPDOCK AMSTERDAM Shipdock Amsterdam operates four graving dry-docks for ships up to 250 metres in length (about 85,000 dwt). The yard is known for quick and high quality repairs, conversions, dockings and its work force is very experienced. Shipdock specialises in the repair and conversion of dredgers, offshore vessels, deepsea trawlers, car carriers, cruiseships, navy vessels and chemical product tankers.
ORANJEWERF SCHEEPSREPARATIE Oranjewerf Scheepsreparatie is active in maintenance, repairs, conversions, lengthening and hull & machinery upgrades. It concentrates on several vessel types such as coasters, tugs, offshore suppliers, dredgers, barges and fishing craft. Oranjewerf’s facilities include a floating dry-dock, a slipway, repair berths and fully equipped workshops. The yard docks vessels up to 135 x 23.9 x 7 metres, and a light weight of about 6,000 tons. Mobile voyage repair companies are active throughout the entire port region. They provide a round-the-clock service and drive their fully equipped repair trucks alongside ships at their berth. www.shipdock.nl www.oranjewerf.com

Authorities and maritime services
Tugboat from Svitzer, one of the two tug companies in Amsterdam Seaports.
PORT OF AMSTERDAM Port of Amsterdam is responsible for nautical management and port development. It is not involved in commercial activities as these are carried out by the private sector. The authority invests in innovation, the development and maintenance of the nautical infrastructure such as the port basins, a number of bulk handling quays and several other port facilities. Port of Amsterdam makes its extensive know-how available to new companies interested in locating within the port region. As the port authority, Port of Amsterdam controls both the safety and flow the shipping traffic in the 30-kilometre long port area, including the IJmuiden outer harbour and sea locks. It operates state-ofthe-art patrol boats equipped with heavy firefighting equipment. The Pontis computer

control system is of great assistance to all parties involved, providing information and all required shipping data to pilots, customs, immigration authorities and port companies. Since 2012 the Nautical Sector operates an advanced shore radar system for Vessel Traffic Management along the entire North Sea Canal and port/harbour approach.
CUSTOMS The Dutch customs inspects the flow of goods in and out of the territory of the European Union. As Dutch air and seaports form part of the external borders of the EU, a significant part of the customs activities takes place in the western part of the Netherlands. Responsible for over 25% of the total EU imports and exports, the Dutch customs is a modern and efficient organisation backed up by advanced technology. The Dutch customs works closely together with other specialised inspection and investigation services such as the national fiscal intelligence and investigation service (FIOD), environmental departments, the police, the immigration authorities and the general inspection service. Cooperation with other customs services in the EU has also become even more intensive over recent years.

handles some 20,000 shipping movements a year. Helicopters are used to place pilots aboard in bad weather conditions.
before they are alongside the quay. In addition, they collect and deliver ships’ waste to the port reception facility as required by EU regulations.
TOWAGE
New sustainability rules dictate that ships should deliver waste, garbage and sludge to an authorised reception facility. The Amsterdam port region has such installations, where the ship’s waste is recycled or disposed of in the correct way. A number of companies, e.g. MAIN, Bek & Verburg, Marpol Services and Waterboot van den Bovenkamp, also collect the waste from onboard.
Port towage is available to shipping throughout the port area. New heavy-duty tugs with high bollard-pull capacities have recently been added to the modern tug fleets of Svitzer and Iskes Towage & Salvage as shipping movements have increased. Although the absence of tide and currents makes the port area easily manoeuvrable, tug assistance is always available and especially useful in stormy conditions. In October 2012 Iskes Towage & Salvage signed a contract with Damen Shipyards to be the launching customer for a 60-tons diesel hybrid tug.
SHIP’S SUPPLIES Provisioning of bunkers, food and drinking water is handled by a number of companies. All types of food and beverages are available for those onboard luxury cruise vessels, from crew members to pampered passengers.
BOATMEN The port has two boatmen corporations (‘CVV’) in the port of IJmuiden and ‘De Koperen Ploeg’, based at the port of Amsterdam, which provide services for the mooring and un-mooring of vessels in the eastern and the western port areas. Using the same line-handling tenders, these organisations also deliver provisions to ships
