Amsterdam port region: a strong international partner The Port Guide is an annual publication of the promotional organisation Amports (Amsterdam Ports Association). Amports represents some 265 private companies as well as the main port authorities and governmental institutions in the Amsterdam port region. The main goal of this publication is to illustrate the dynamic versatility of the port region. We trust that this Port Guide 2014 will convince you that the seaports of Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Beverwijk and Zaanstad form a flexible and innovative port region, namely the North Sea Canal region. It is good for a total storage and transhipment of nearly 100 million tons, making it the fourth largest seaport in Europe. Additionally the port region generates an added value of 6.3 billion euros and some 55,000 jobs.

Frans Bau d, Ch a i r m a n A m p o rts

As Chairman of Amports I hope the Port Guide also showcases the opportunities the region offers you. This includes Amsterdam being both the largest petrol port and the largest cocoa port worldwide, while the three modern terminals in Amsterdam and IJmuiden, which work extremely well together, welcome around 200 cruise vessels a year. What’s more, the port region features various high-quality terminals, stevedores, a strong food cluster and excellent maritime and nautical service providers.

the Amsterdam port, and the assembly and maintenance of wind turbines on the North Sea. An equally important aspect of the port is the first class cooperation between regional partners, for instance with regard to improving the infrastructure. This is well illustrated by the joint preparations for the new sea locks in IJmuiden, which are due to be delivered in 2019. In short: this port region has a great deal to offer you and your organisation!

Sustainable port The North Sea Canal area has always been a major player in the import, storage, processing and transit of oil products and coal, but is now developing into an innovative and sustainable port. Examples include the increasing production of biodiesel in

sk the managers of international companies in Amsterdam what sets this region apart from other interesting options for doing business in Europe and you will receive many different answers. Some will stress the fact that nearly all European multinational companies are represented in Amsterdam, others comment on the international mindset of people in Amsterdam, while a third group will talk about the multicultural strengths of the city. Then there are those who praise the excellent physical and digital networks, or the inspiring energy of this centuries-old trading city with its rich cultural heritage. All these are true and yet Amsterdam has still more qualities to offer. Anyone who visits the city and tastes its unique atmosphere can vouch for that fact. As one American entrepreneur writes: “Amsterdam offers all the advantages of a cosmopolitan city and business centre, but retains its intimate scale.

Major transit port The Amsterdam port region is a major transit port for dry, liquid and break bulk, containerised and roll-on/roll-off cargoes destined for or originating from the European

mainland. But with the shifting of the economic focus in Europe, an extra dimension has emerged. In their search for an ideal operating base to coordinate and consolidate their activities on the European continent, more and more companies are choosing the Amsterdam region for their Pan-European head office. Meanwhile, some 2,000 foreign enterprises have settled in the Amsterdam region. They experience the advantages of the Dutch capital’s financial, business, logistics, creative and IT services. Crucially, there is also the cluster effect created by the nearby international air and seaports. The strength of Amsterdam is also defined to a considerable extent by its compact scale. There are more than 350 million European consumers within 1,000 kilometres of Amsterdam and the region is eminently equipped to distribute and supply transport and passenger flows to and from this second-largest consumer market in the world. In close vicinity is a large port complex where all types of cargo can be handled, good inland waterways, fine road and rail connections, and an airport with an extensive network of global connections.

Dutch ports perform very well in terms of transhipment speed, reliability of logistic services and cost effectiveness. The customs authorities developed an advanced and highly automated cargo clearing system, a forerunner to the future European Customs system. They also pioneered a bonded warehousing system, resulting in time-savings and transhipment cost reductions.

Amsterdam enjoys a rich tradition as an international centre for social and cultural innovation. The renowned VOC (East India Company) was set up more than 400 years ago as the very first globally operating stock company. Share trading was ‘invented’ and a stock exchange established to meet the capital demands of this multinational company. This spirit of innovation is still very much alive in Amsterdam today.

Broadband internet Amsterdam is well connected in other ways too, with the Netherlands having the third highest concentration of broadband internet connections in Europe. This has encouraged the growth of many innovative IT companies and their presence ensures continued progress in the field of data transport. In addition, a fair and transparent tax climate plays a role in the attractiveness of Amsterdam as an international business location. The cost of living is very reasonable compared to the British, French or German capitals. People in Amsterdam are friendly, hospitable, cooperative and helpful, and almost all can communicate in the English language.

International orientation Creative impulses also contribute to another quality which characterises Amsterdam and its citizens: its international orientation. The Dutch way of doing business is based upon an ability to build bridges between different cultures. This has also become a way of life in Amsterdam, with its nearly 200 different nationalities. The composition and capacities of the local professional population reflect this as Amsterdam’s multilingual, multicultural, tolerant and independent-minded society gears towards finding a consensus.

w w w.amsterdam.nl

As a city, Amsterdam has some 800,000 inhabitants, but the entire metropolitan area, including the surrounding municipalities, brings the total to more than 1.5 million. The community organisations are efficient and down-to-earth with a positive and helpful approach.

he port of Zaanstad is situated north of Amsterdam, while the two ports of IJmuiden and Beverwijk are located west of the city near the North Sea Coast. These are situated at the entrance to the North Sea Canal where the steel and paper industry, short sea shipping, fishing, offshore (including wind energy), ferry and cruise traffic are all thrive.

The four ports that make up the single entity of the Amsterdam port region handle a combined total of nearly 95 million tons of cargo. After Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg, this makes the Amsterdam port region the fourth largest port in Europe. As a versatile cargo handling and transport centre, Amsterdam Seaports welcomes practically all types of goods with the notable exception of crude oil (there are no refineries in the area). The terminals handle dry, liquid and break bulk, container and Ro/Ro cargo.

Amsterdam Amsterdam is by far the largest port of the four. Deep-water quays as well as facilities along the rail and road links are available at reasonable terms. Companies have recently settled in the Africa harbour (‘Afrikahaven’) port basin area. Along its 3,600-metre quay is a zone for new cargo handling activities and – further away from the waterfront – distribution and logistics activities. Near the city centre the modern Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) accommodates between 140 and 150 large cruise vessels annually, while some 1,500 river cruise vessels per year also call at Amsterdam.

IJmuiden Entering the port area from the North Sea, IJmuiden is a rapidly growing tidal port with three port basins. Its harbour is designed for short sea shipping, reefer warehousing and offshore oil, gas and wind energy supply activities. IJmuiden is Europe’s largest fisheries centre, a cruise and ferry port and an offshore base at the same time. It is also an industrial city, with the Tata Steel complex located on the north bank of the port entrance.

T

he development of the IJmond harbour started some fifteen years ago when Zeehaven IJmuiden NV (the IJmuiden Port Authority) realised that many companies were looking for more room to accommodate their growing activities. The IJmond harbour is particulary suitable for offshore projects (including wind parks and drilling platform maintenance) and cruise ships. In recent years the harbour has experienced a complete metamorphosis with the arrival of new businesses, such as Vestas Offshore Maintenance, Iskes Towage & Salvage, Airborne Oil & Gas and the Felison Cruise Terminal, IJmuiden’s seaside cruise terminal. The IJmond harbour’s quay is 680 metres long, divided between a western dock of 360 metres and an eastern one of 320 metres. It is possible for ships up to 295 metres to moor

at the western quay, while the eastern dock accommodates vessels up to 255 metres. The harbour basin is 120 metres wide and has a draught of 11 metres. Thanks to its sturdy sand bed, the harbour basin is suitable for accommodating heavy drilling and processing platforms, as well as other raised platforms. Both quays are also suitable for the storage and handling of very heavy loads. To this end, the western quay has two loading platforms made from reinforced concrete and special bed protection. The latter is necessary due to the so-called propeller streams created by large cruise ships. In addition, the IJmond harbour has a Ro/ Ro bridge for the heaviest Ro/Pax-vessels. The new port area is used for storing sections and parts for wind energy parks under construction in the North Sea. Thanks to its close proximity to the open sea, it is ideally situated for cold-store activities, short sea trade and offshore services. The IJmond harbour has good hinterland connections and is located just 25 kilometres from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Dry bulk carriers up to 200,000 tons dwt berth at its deep sea quays, while Tata Steel’s products are shipped from its general cargo quay or all-weather terminal for hinterland transport by inland waterway or rail.

Tata Steel has an output of some 7 million tons of steel products a year. The company employs some 9,000 employees on its 750-hectare facilities. The European operations of Tata Steel comprise Europe’s second largest steel producer. With the main steelmaking operations in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, they supply steel and related services to the construction, automotive, packaging, lifting & excavating, energy & power, aerospace and other demanding markets worldwide. The combined Tata Steel Group is one of the world’s largest steel producers, with an aggregate crude steel capacity of more than 28 million tons and approximately 80,000 employees across four continents.

Port G u i d e 2 01 4 / Ener gy

T he ports o f A msterdam :

F ro ntrun n ers i n energy The Amsterdam por t region’s dr y and liquid bulk cargo throughput has r isen to such an ex tent in recent years that the por t has de veloped into the leading European fuel transhipment por t. I n addition to the storage and distr ibution of fuels, value -added ac tivities by the ter minals in Amsterdam such as blending and upgrading have made Amsterdam a por t of increasing interest to the solid and liquid fuel mar k ets. With oil and coal produc ts accounting for some 70% of transhipments, the Amsterdam por t region can truly be called an energy por t. Amsterdam is also the second largest European coal transhipment por t, and the Amsterdam por t region has both the ambition and location to become a leader in sustainable and rene wable energy.

Dry bulk Coal makes up some 45% of the annual 42 million tons of dry bulk transhipped in the ports of Amsterdam. The closure of German coal mines in recent years has enabled the dry bulk terminals to expand from 15.5 million tons in 2011 to an estimated 22 million tons by the year 2020. A relatively new mooring facility west of the IJmuiden locks will unload deep drawing bulk carriers directly to inland barges or coastal bulkers. As soon as a carrier’s draught falls below the 14-metre mark it is allowed to pass the IJmuiden sea locks and head for one of the two major Amsterdam coal terminals, OBA Bulk Terminal and Rietlanden Terminals.

The power plant (630 MW) in the Amsterdam port has its coal delivered via the neighbouring OBA Bulk Terminal. Photo: Max Dijksterhuis

Liquid bulk Liquid bulk is nearing the 43 million tons per year mark, 95% of which is refined oil products (fuels). Vopak’s 1.2 million m3 tank farm in the Africa harbour (‘Afrikahaven’) port basin means the total Amsterdam oil product turnover figures will rise in the coming years. As of 2013, the Amsterdam terminals operate at full capacity. The Hydrocarbon Hotel tank terminal, with a total capacity of some 140,000 m3, was opened in 2012. It is a joint project by the Netherlands-based North Sea Group and UK Company Blue Ocean Associates Ltd. The tanks are used for exporting and blending petrol and petrol components and biofuels.

Offshore Located in the heart of the Netherlands, the AmsterdamIJmuiden port region is ideally located to service offshore oil & gas operations on the North Sea. There are excellent

maintenance and modification facilities in the area and dedicated quay space for supply vessels and offshore work ships. Maintenance, modification and decommissioning of offshore platforms, offshore drilling support and supply are the main areas of expertise. There is dedicated quay space for supply vessels and offshore work ships. The Amsterdam-IJmuiden port area offers 24-hour accessibility, no tidal restrictions and excellent multimodal hinterland connections by inland shipping, road, rail and air connections. The port area has no tidal restrictions. The port of IJmuiden has a direct open connection to the North Sea. The three port basins, with a total of 4,500 metres, have been deepened to ten metres. IJmuiden also has enough dedicated quay space for offshore supply vessels and offshore work ships. Over the years, Amsterdam IJmuiden Offshore Port (AYOP) has developed into a unique network organisation. The list of partners not only includes many oil & gas, offshore wind and port related and maritime industries, but local government bodies as well. AYOP’s main objective is to provide promotional support to the regional offshore industries and to promote the area’s unique facilities.

Sustainable energy The number of companies generating sustainable energy in Amsterdam Seaports is growing rapidly. Waste and Energy Company (AEB) generates energy by incinerating waste, 48%

of which is biomass. The power plants have a capacity of 124 megawatt, producing 1 million megawatt hours annually. This provides electricity for some 320,000 households, 75% of the city of Amsterdam’s total. The new Greenmills plant produces sustainable biofuels and green energy from organic waste products such as frying oil. Biofuels is the collective name for different types of fuels that are made from organic (plant and animal) matter. The plant will convert 100,000 tons organic waste into 115 million litres of sustainable biodiesel and 25 million m3 of biogas. In 2010 the green light was given for a new 200,000-ton biodiesel plant for Vesta Biofuels Amsterdam on the south side of the America harbour (‘Amerikahaven’), which is due to go into production soon. Vesta Biofuels will process a wide variety of feedstock, including rape seed oil, certified palm oil, algae oil, processed frying fat and used oil residue from kitchens. Port of Amsterdam, which deals with biomass from countries including Canada, the United States and Brazil, expects to tranship and store up to one million ton of biomass by 2020. In 2012, OBA Bulk Terminal Amsterdam and CWT Sitos handled its first transhipments of wood pellets and expects to see more biomass arrive in the coming tears. OBA can store up to 110,000 tons of biomass. Other bulk terminals in the Amsterdam port region (Maja Stevedores and IGMA) also expect to receive biomass shipments in the near future. The big launch of biomass is expected as soon as Swedish power company Vattenfall starts cofiring biomass in its 630 MW coalfired unit in the port of Amsterdam.

Wind for power With its abundance of wind, the Netherlands – which has employed windmills for centuries – now uses a steadily growing proportion of wind power to generate electricity. A fine example is the wind turbines in the Port of Amsterdam with an installed capacity of 65 megawatt, equivalent to the electricity needs of 40,000 households.

by X xx

Two wind energy parks have been built in the North Sea in the vicinity of IJmuiden over the last decade, providing a total capacity of some 230 megawatts. During construction, the IJmond Harbour (‘IJmondhaven’) in the port of IJmuiden was used as a supply base for the masts, generator units and rotor blades awaiting shipment to the offshore windmill park location. More offshore wind energy parks are projected and the IJmuiden port will remain an important offshore supply base for this sector.

he storage capacity of the terminal in the America harbour (‘Amerikahaven’) is approximately 1.6 million m3, divided over 83 tanks with floating roofs varying in size between 4,000 and 61,500 m3. In these tanks Oiltanking Amsterdam stores a wide range of petrol products as well as gasoil, diesel, naphtha and Jet A1. A relatively small activity is the storage of molasses, a viscous by-product from the sugar industry. Oiltanking has 18 jetties, of which seven can dock seagoing vessels with a maximum deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 100,000. OTA in Amsterdam employs more than 90 people. The premises of Oiltanking Amsterdam also include a bio-diesel factory owned by Mercuria. In addition, options

are available for expanding the terminal itself and on the adjacent grounds.

Two important pipelines Oiltanking Amsterdam owns two vital pipelines; an 80km pipeline that pipes in crude petroleum from various production platforms on the North Sea, and a second 20km pipeline that connects the terminal to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, one of Europe’s top five airports in terms of passengers and cargo. The latter pipeline supplies nearly 50 percent of the airport’s total kerosene demand. Additionally, OTA stores part of the strategic oil supply kept by the Dutch government.

rom 2007 to the end of 2009, the BAT went through a major expansion under the project name Theseus. This 130-million dollar investment project entailed the construction of five jetties, fourteen kilometres of pipelines, two large pumping stations, and a number of power distribution stations. Thanks to this substantial expansion, the BAT is fully ready for the coming period of increasing commercial activities. Capital investments are also being made to ensure that the BAT can operate as best in class. This has resulted in considerable improvements in commercial performance. The BAT storage tanks are part of a constant renovation programme which ensures that they continuously meet the latest standards. of inspection, minimising risk and maximising availability. As a result of investments in the infrastructure, automation system and safety systems at the BAT, the complex currently has the capacity to simultaneously process three seagoing vessels, nine inland vessels and ten trucks, while carrying out eight product transfers at the terminal. With a view to its environmental commitments, BP Amsterdam has linked its new jetty to a modern vapour processing installation, having already connected existing jetties to the same system in 2009. In 2010, the company started large-scale maintenance on its wastewater treatment system. Other activities involve upgrading the tanks, pipes and road network.

I

n recent years, NuStar has invested considerable sums in environmental and safety systems. For instance, the tank storage company has linked all interconnected tanks and jetties to a modern vapour processing system, which is active even when no vessels are loading or unloading. Since this is a completely closed system from which virtually no harmful vapour can escape, the storage tanks do not require floating roofs. NuStar has also liquid-proofed any locations from which products can inadvertently be released, such as pumping and loading & unloading bays.

NuStar Terminals works to significantly reduce energy consumption at the terminal. For instance, tanks and pipes were insulated wherever necessary in 2010. Another example is the plan to install automatic controls for the three major thermal boilers which heat the fuel oil tanks. NuStar Terminals is part of the American concern NuStar Energy, which owns 84 storage terminals in the US, Canada, Mexico, St Eustatius, the UK, Turkey and the Netherlands.

he company has invested over 70 million euros in safety, the environment and infrastructure over the past six years. It will carry on these major investments the coming years on further inprovements and expansion. It already built four new storage tanks with a joint capacity of 150,000 m3 in 2009, and four more gasoil tanks with a total capacity of 75,000 m3 were added in mid-2011. Eurotank Amsterdam is also expanding the capacity of the loading arms on the jetties to expedite the (un)loading of tankers. It is expected that the investment will increase the transhipment capacity of the terminal by 50 percent over the coming years.

Enviromental Measures Eurotank Amsterdam has also taken substantial environmental measures since 2008 including the design

As a so-called downstream company, Gulf Oil Netherlands buys petrol products via long-term contracts with large refineries instead of having its own production capacity. The new quay accommodates inland vessels (lighters) and seagoing vessels with a draught of up to 11 metres. The storage capacity of the eight storage tanks (with a height and diameter of 22.5 metres) is 60,000 m3. The terminal also includes a loading system for four tanker trucks. In case of a calamity, the fire extinguishing system can provide over 37,500 litres of water a minute. From the Amsterdam port, the tankers supply products to around 400 petrol stations in the Netherlands and

several hundred stations in Belgium and Germany. The terminal is supplied with petrol products by means of four lighters. Gulf Oil also intends to start offering vesselto-vessel transhipment from seagoing to inland vessels and lighters, including a filter system. In Amsterdam Gulf Oil works closely with its sister company MAIN (Maritieme Afvalstoffen Inzameling Nederland). In addition to providing land for the terminal, MAIN also offers support with collecting maritime waste and cleaning tanks.

ajor clients include coal producers and traders, electricity companies, the steel industry, animal feed companies, the cement industry and the chemicals and paper sectors. Most clients are located in Germany, France, the UK and the Netherlands.

OBA has 600,000 m3 of open storage facilities and five covered facilities totalling 25,000 m3. These warehouses are within the reach of the gantry cranes, making it possible for the grabber to enter the warehouses directly from above. OBA also has a transport belt connection to the nearby 630 megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station.

whereas capsize vessels up to 17.80 metres draught are lightened at the facility in IJmuiden. OBA has excellent hinterland connections via the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, which connects the Amsterdam port region to the Rhine and German industrial regions for inland vessels. Furthermore, the terminal has an excellent rail connection via the Betuwe rail-link. Some 17,000 tons are loaded onto rail on a daily basis.

R ietl a nden R ietlanden Ter minals has three locations for the transhipment, storage and processing of dr y bulk (coal) and scrap in the Amsterdam por t. These ter minals in the West har bour (‘Westhaven’), Amer ica-Asia har bour (‘A merika-A ziëhaven’) and Afr ica har bour (‘Afrikahaven’) have a joint sur face area of 565,000m 2 and a storage capacit y of approximately 3.2 million tons. R ietlanden transpor ts 600,000 to 700,000 tons of coal to the hinter land by cargo train a year, and cur rently employs 120 people.

A

fter starting out as Rietlanden Stevedores, the company has experienced considerable growth since the 1990s: From 700,000 tons in 1996 to 5.4 million tons in 2010. Its storage capacity increased from 700,000 to around three million tons a year, including 2.65 million tons of coal and 300,000 tons of scrap. Rietlanden Terminals has been part of EDF Trading in London since 2007.

36

For the (un)loading process, the company uses five floating cranes, including four Lemniscate cranes with a capacity of 40 tons and one 50-ton Gottwald crane. Rietlanden can use these cranes anywhere in the North Sea Canal, from the lighter location in IJmuiden to the Amsterdam port.

In the America-Asia harbour, Rietlanden has a terminal of 165,000 m2 with a storage capacity of 750,000 tons, and facilities for crushing, screening, blending, washing and sifting coal. The quay has a length of 1,000 metres. The America harbour location can accommodate Capesize bulk carriers with a maximum draught of 15 metres, while the Asia harbour allows vessels with a draught up to 11.5 metres. These facilities can also load two freight trains a day, and have a weighbridge for trucks and goods carriages. In the West harbour the company has facilities with a surface area of 100,000 m2, as well as 350 metres of quay for seagoing vessels with draughts up to 15 metres. The coal storage capacity amounts to 500,000 tons, including facilities for blending, screening and iron removal.

The Africa harbour is home to the newest terminal of 300,000 m2 and some 1,150 metres of quay, plus a twomillion ton storage capacity. These Rietlanden facilities also have a loading capacity of five freight trains per 24 hours. Ninety percent of the internal transport at the terminals is by conveyor belt, which limits dust issues. Rietlanden has also made other investments in environmental measures, including a monitoring system with air pollution detectors that measure coal dust, covering the coal with cellulose, spraying transhipment processes and purifying drain and rain water. In addition, the company’s cranes, launchers and conveyor belts use low-sulphur fuel.

ith its proximity to wind farms and its central location in Europe, the area offers storage and assembly sites, a wide network of companies, two seaports (Amsterdam and IJmuiden) combined with local authorities. In short, expertise and facilities dedicated to offshore wind energy.

Infrastructure, quay side and space readily available

The seaports in the Amsterdam region are ideally linked to the primary West European shipping routes, and have excellent road, rail and inland waterway connections with a vast hinterland.

The port area along the North Sea Canal area is also home base to installation and supply ships, crew vessels, cable layers and other specialised craft servicing the construction and operation of the wind farms in the North Sea.

A heliport is located in the port area. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is only a 15-minute drive away, enabling fast air transport of cargo, emergency supplies, executives and personnel.

Two offshore wind farms, with an installed capacity of 108 and 120 Megawatt (MW), have already been installed from the port region. Maintenance of these wind farms is executed from the port of IJmuiden. Vessel renovation, maintenance

he food industry was established in this region in the sixteenth century, initially powered by windmills. Then as now, the sector was marked by a combination of high skill levels and an entrepreneurial spirit. Many multinationals have either located in Amsterdam or Zaanstad or taken over Dutch companies. Leading examples include ADM Cocoa, AHOLD, United Biscuits Netherlands/ Verkade, Tate & Lyle and Cargill. IJmuiden has also become Europe’s number one fish centre. This is due both to its large trawler fleet and the significant pelagic fish and fish product trade. Many reefer warehouses

World’s leading cocoa import centre As the world’s largest cocoa port, Amsterdam handles between 600,000 and 700,000 tons of cocoa beans per year – about 15 to 20 percent of the global production. West Africa (Cote d’ Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon) is the main source of Amsterdam’s cocoa imports, followed by Malaysia and Indonesia. Agribulk: a major Amsterdam cargo flow Amsterdam is Europe’s leading agribulk port. Representing around 26 percent of all food shipments through the seaports of the Le Havre-Hamburg range, the commodities handled by Amsterdam include grains, derivatives, animal fodder, cocoa and molasses. Amsterdam’s leading position in the food sector is due to the presence in the area of bulk stevedores such as IGMA and Maja Stevedores. Amsterdam offers a wide variety of discharge and storage facilities.

The drinks are on us: juices, wines and spirits Tank storage firms stock and bottle wine, sherry and spirits

for European retail chains and wine merchants in and around Amsterdam. Although representing only a small proportion of the overall annual figure of around 38 million tons of liquid cargo, beverages are an important commodity in the Amsterdam ports. Wines are shipped in by seagoing and road tankers.

and foreign trawlers, at the IJmuiden fish auction and supply their clients in the different European markets the very same day. A computerised internet fish auction system enables them to bid from their own offices rather than coming to the auction. IJmuiden is also home port to a number of pelagic fish companies.

Amsterdam and Zaandam companies take care of bottling the wines and the distribution throughout Europe. Citrus juices arrive from South America by tanker, specially dehydrated as a juice extract and cooled at 0º C. One terminal is specialised in spirits and ethanol for industrial use, while the derivative molasses is stored in tanks equipped with heating installations.

Zeehaven IJmuiden NV is the IJmuiden port authority for the three port basins, serving as a home port for a large fishing fleet and a primary port of call for many non-Dutch fishing craft. As a major EU-fishery centre, IJmuiden has become one of the leading refrigerated warehousing centres for other edibles too. Over two million square metres of refrigerated and frozen warehouse space is available for the storage of fish and fish products.

As the ideal retur n cargo for road hauliers, timber is increasingly transpor ted by truck from Nor ther n European countr ies. The major it y of the ne wspr int comes from Finland and Sweden, with heav y rolls being stock piled and distr ibuted throughout the Nether lands and adjacent countr ies. The regional paper industr y processes about half a million tons into qualit y paper. Pulp is impor ted via the Amsterdam por t region from Nor th Amer ica, Finland, Spain and Por tugal. Sand and gravel Amsterdam is also a major port for building construction materials. Sand and gravel dredged in the North Sea serves as a raw material for the building industry and the production of concrete products such as paving stones and prefab constructions. Granite extracted from the rocky coasts of the UK (Scotland) and Norway is discharged and stored in the Amsterdam bulk terminals. Here it is sieved, screened and sorted into granulate sizes, then transported by barge to building sites. Finally, some ten million tons of sand and gravel produced in the Far East is imported annually.

Minerals Around half a million tons of industrial minerals originating from Australia, South Africa, the Mediterranean and

Scandinavia are imported each year. In the offshore industry, minerals are used for exploration drillings, while white minerals serve as filling substance for the plastics industry. Special types of minerals are ‘micronised’ to a very fine floury substance and transported in bags to ceramics companies. Fertiliser has been produced for over a century in the Amsterdam port region. The raw material superphosphate is shipped in from the eastern Mediterranean area. Farmers all over Europe use the fertile granulates from Amsterdam, which are mainly transported to hinterland destinations by barge. As a derivative from the sugar refining industry, molasses is a raw material for a variety of animal feed products and for distilling industrial alcohol. Specialised forwarding and

Metals, steel and scrap iron

A regular supply of parts, originating from all over Europe, China and Japan, feeds its Amsterdam production facility. The end product is orange-coloured excavators that are sold in the Netherlands and abroad. At the same time, vast numbers of second-hand cars leave the Amsterdam port to begin a new life in developing countries.

Aluminium and zinc in nuggets or bars are regularly shipped in from Norway and Finland as a raw material for various products made in Western Europe. Aluminium and zinc are handled at different terminals, which act as metal stock storage areas, before being shipped to European destinations. Steel products made in the Tata Steel blast furnaces in IJmuiden are also transhipped from other steel producers via the Amsterdam port region. A number of chemical logistics companies are active in the port area. IMO-classified cargoes are stored in certified warehouses before shipment. The port hosts a large cluster of specialised chemical companies.

Project cargo and heavy lift The Amsterdam port region is very suitable for the loading and discharging of heavy or voluminous cargoes because the entire port region is tide and current free. From container cranes, reactors, breweries and gas turbines to generators for power plants and luxury superyachts, the range of heavy lift requirements is wide indeed. w w w. po rto fam sterdam . nl

T

he cruise industry is going from strength to strength in the Amsterdam port region, with a year-on-year rise in the number of sea cruise ships to the North Sea Canal area. The Amsterdam Cruise Port (ACP) association anticipates a major increase in the number of cruise ships arriving at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), the Felison Terminal and the Felison Cruise Terminal, both located in IJmuiden. Of the 143 bookings received for Amsterdam in 2014, some 43 are turnaround calls - cruises beginning and ending in Amsterdam - and 100 are regular cruise calls. The two Felison terminals in IJmuiden received 55 bookings: 25 turnaround calls and 30 regular cruise calls. In partnership with the Amsterdam Cruise Port (ACP) association, the three terminals in Amsterdam and IJmuiden are looking for new ways to further improve their services to cruise passengers.

A msterda m se aports january 2014

Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), located on the banks of the river IJ near the Amsterdam city centre, can simultaneously accommodate three cruise ships. PTA welcomes some 275,000 passengers on an annual basis and efficiently docks up to 150 ships.

IJmuiden The Felison Terminal and the Felison Cruise Terminal are located outside the sea locks, making fast short calls possible. In 2014, the two terminals are expected to welcome some 85,000 guests. The two IJmuiden facilities are state of the art, providing a comfortable setting for passengers, ample parking space and luggage handling amenities. They offer excellent facilities for turnaround calls as both are very conveniently located just a short distance from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Zeehaven IJmuiden NV (the IJmuiden Port Authority) has invested considerably in deepening the entrance of the IJmond harbour (‘IJmondhaven’), allowing the safe passage of cruise vessels up to 295 metres. This resulted in a sharp increase in the number of extra bookings from the Italian-based cruise line operator MSC Cruises in 2012 and 2013 and the Holland America Line (HAL) in 2014. KVSA (Royal United Ship Agencies), which operates the Felison Terminal for cruise ships and ferries in IJmuiden, therefore decided to build a second terminal in the IJmond harbour, which opened in May 2012. The Felison Cruise Terminal is located between two docks, one of which can accommodate vessels up to 295 metres while the other is suitable for vessels up to 255 metres. The terminal itself has a floor area of 1,600 m2 and primarily services baggage handling and customs formalities.

DFDS Seaways The existing Felison Terminal in IJmuiden also handles the daily DFDS Seaways ferry service to Newcastle (UK). DFDS has been operating this service for almost twenty years and its success is reflected in a steady increase in passenger numbers from 70,000 in 1995 to around 560,000 in 2013. In addition, the two ferries King of Scandinavia and Princess Seaways carry some 25,500 freight trailers (trucks) per year and 102,000 cars and motor vehicles. Regular shuttle buses to Amsterdam take passengers to the city centre and the airport.

EO handles 300,000 tons of cargo annually, half of which is seed potatoes. Since 2009, MEO has had its own container terminal in in the Velsen North port. From here the stevedoring company handles containers from inland vessels, the loads from which are intended for its own warehouses. The stuffing of containers with export goods is also increasing at MEO.

Its primary stevedoring activity is the handling of steel and steel products. Other cargoes handled include timber, cocoa, pulp and starch, and refrigerated products. In recent years MEO has also become a logistic partner for the project cargo sector.

Ste v e d o ri ng IJm ui d en The core business of R eefer Ste vedor ing IJmuiden (RSIJ ) is the loading and discharging of vessels. As par t of the K looster boer Group, R eefer Ste vedor ing IJmuiden is specialised in refr igerated cargo. When discharging reefer shipments, the deep frozen cargo has to be immediately cold-stored in refr igerated warehouses. Parent company K looster boer operates some 40,000 m² of cold store warehouses in the por t of IJmuiden.

R

eefer Stevedoring IJmuiden handles approximately 500,000 tons of refrigerated cargo per year. This is primarily pelagic fish such as herring, mackerel, horse mackerel, blue whiting, with small amounts of poultry and meat. RSIJ has five mobile cranes, around 35 trucks and some 100 employees. This highly experienced crew is able to load between 20,000 and 35,000 cartons of fish per shift.

SY is an initiative by the Amsterdam-based Ter Haak Group and Zeehaven IJmuiden NV, the IJmuiden Port Authority. The CSY partners have close contacts with several leading fisheries companies such as Cornelis Vrolijk, Parlevliet & Van der Plas and cold-storage company Kloosterboer. Trawlers unload the fish in IJmuiden where it is stored in the cold storage warehouses, transhipped by means of reefer containers and directly barged from IJmuiden. Barge Company Amsterdam (BCA) transports the reefer containers on its daily services to deep sea terminals in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp, from where shipping lines transport the fish the world over. In 2009 almost 2,500 containers of fish were being transported from IJmuiden by inland vessel, and by 2012 the figure had almost doubled to 4,500. The Ter Haak

Group expects to see the business grow to around 10,000 reefer containers annually in the next few years. Container Company Amsterdam (CCA) also intends to develop CSY as a supply base for offshore containers for the oil and gas industry. Located at the Haring harbour (‘Haringhaven’), CSY has a container depot with service and maintenance facilities covering some 10,000 m² as well as 150 reefer points. In 2010 and 2011 Zeehaven IJmuiden NV has made the area ready for container transhipment. The new, 30-metre wide quays accommodate inland vessels that pick up containers of frozen fish. CSY IJmuiden is part of the Deep Sea International Frozen Fish Centre (DIFE), the strategic plan to strengthen IJmuiden’s position as frozen fish hub.

companies shuttle back and forth between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp and the German hinterland several times a week. The sailing time between Amsterdam and Duisburg, a major intermodal hub in the Ruhr region, is only sixteen hours.

Intermodal network The Amsterdam port region is currently establishing a new intermodal network centred around container transfer points on industrial terrains or in inland ports, where trucks can deliver containers for onward transport through the Netherlands on inland vessels. To meet the expected growth of the number of containers in the port of Rotterdam and strengthen Amsterdam’s position as a transfer hub for the north of the Netherlands, the network will include separate line services for large inland vessels (400-500 TEU). These barges will go back and forth between the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam (and possibly Amsterdam Airport Schiphol), from where smaller vessels will act as line services via the inland ports in the north of the country. Port of Amsterdam aims to achieve a considerable expansion in the share of inland shipping and rail cargo to further increase the sustainability of the seaport. This includes a doubling of rail transportation from 5.5 million tons (2006) to 11 million tons in 2020, for instance by means of the expansion and electrification. Since 2010, the Amsterdam port region has had a direct connection to the Betuwe rail route, the main cargo line between the port of Rotterdam and the German hinterland. A rail shuttle between Amsterdam and Duisburg is creating additional possibilities for large companies such as Tata Steel

66

A msterda m se aports january 2014

in IJmuiden, Flora Holland and stevedores, enabling them to transport products to German markets and the farthest corners of Europe. In April 2013, Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate Netherlands, Katoen Natie Amsterdam and Ter Haak Intermodal implemented a new rail container shuttle from the port of Amsterdam to Berlin. The shuttle departs from the USA Terminal in Amsterdam once a week with more than 1,000 tons of cocoa loaded in bulk containers. The new connection will allow Amsterdam to strengthen its storage and transhipment capacity and reaffirm its position as the world’s largest cocoa port. From February 2014, another rail container shuttle will run between Amsterdam and Milan. Initiated by the Dutch company Herik Rail, the shuttle comprises three runs back and forth a week. Products such as cut flowers, vegetables, fruit, fish, meat and pharmaceuticals will be stored in containers and transhipped to Italy, with leather goods making the return trip back to the Netherlands.

New motorway and tunnel A new tunnel below the North Sea Canal (the ‘second Coen tunnel’) and a new motorway through the port area (‘Westrandweg’) further reinforce Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and the Amsterdam seaports. Both projects were delivered in 2013, relieving pressure on the Amsterdam ringroad and improving connections to the port of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Rotterdam. With around 52.5 million travellers a year (2013), Schiphol is the fourth

largest European airport. It is also the third largest when it comes to cargo transport with approximately 1.5 million tons. The Amsterdam port region is Europe’s fourth seaport with some 95 million tons (2013).

Port of partnerships

planet meets profit

Foto: Mirjam Terpstra

Welcome to the port of Amsterdam. Where planet meets profit. Technology knows no boundaries. The planet does. But that can go together. Even in a growing port, such as Port of Amsterdam. The port is growing, just like the city, the airport and the region around us. The need for space and nature is growing at the same rate. This calls for inventive and innovative solutions in the harbour. To reduce noise and protect the air, water and soil quality. It also requires intensive use of space, so we can do more business on the same surface. Combining the natural environment, residential areas and the port industry in a smart manner. Together with the companies in the port and partners in the area we are working hard to achieve that goal. With new techniques to reduce particulate matter and emissions, reclaim raw materials and energy from waste and generate wind energy in the port area.

6 8

A msterda m se aports january 2014

Moreover, with an employment scope of 55,000 people we help strengthen the regional economy. We also want to further the symbiosis between planet and profit outside the port area. We therefore reward clean ‘green’ vessels and encourage sustainable transport of goods by making rail and barge transport commercially more attractive than road transport. When we collaborate with customers, suppliers, other ports, NGOs, governments and regulators, we can achieve more. Realizing a sustainable port faster. Therein lies the challenge for us, the Port of Partnerships. Want to know more about the port of Amsterdam where planet meets profit? Authorities and Maritime Services The new pilot tender of the boatmen in IJmuiden. Photo: Willem Moojen

Port of Amsterdam Port of Amsterdam is responsible for nautical management and port development. It is not involved in commercial activities as these are carried out by the private sector. The authority invests in innovation, the development and maintenance of the nautical infrastructure such as the port basins, a number of bulk handling quays and several other port facilities. Port of Amsterdam makes its extensive knowhow available to new companies interested in locating within the port region. As the port authority, the Harbourmaster’s Division controls both the safety and flow of the shipping traffic in the 30-kilometre long port area, including the IJmuiden outer harbour and sea locks. It operates state-of-the-art patrol boats equipped with heavy firefighting equipment. In April 2013 the Port of Amsterdam took two new sustainable patrol boats into service. Both vessels from the Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards feature environmentally-friendly diesel engines and can store spent liquids onboard. The HAMIS (HArbour Master Information System) control system is of great assistance to all parties involved, providing information and all required shipping data to pilots, customs, immigration authorities and port companies. Developed by the port of Rotterdam in close cooperation with the Port of Amsterdam, it will replace the PONTIS system. Since September 2012 the Harbourmaster’s Division

operates an advanced shore-based radar system for vessel traffic services along the entire North Sea Canal and port/ harbour approach.

Customs The Dutch customs inspects the flow of goods in and out of the territory of the European Union. As Dutch air and seaports form part of the external borders of the EU, a significant part of the customs activities takes place in the western part of the Netherlands. Responsible for over 25% of the total EU imports and exports, the Dutch customs is a modern and efficient organisation backed by advanced technology. The Dutch customs works closely together with other specialised inspection and investigation services such as the national fiscal intelligence and investigation service (FIOD), environmental departments, the police, the immigration authorities and the general inspection service. Cooperation with other customs services in the EU has also become even more intensive over recent years.

Pilots The Amsterdam-IJmond region, part of the overall Dutch pilotage (‘Loodswezen’), handles some 13,000 shipping movements a year. The service has developed a highly accurate portable navigation system to guide deep drafting vessels from the North Sea cross point into IJmuiden at the

Ship’s supplies Provisioning of bunkers, food and drinking water is handled by a number of companies. All types of food and beverages are available for those onboard luxury cruise vessels, from crew members to pampered passengers.

Boatmen The port has two boatmen corporations - the Cooperative Association of Boatmen (CVV) in IJmuiden and ‘De Koperen Ploeg’, based at the port of Amsterdam. Both provide services for the mooring and un-mooring of vessels in the eastern and the western port areas. Using the same line-handling tenders, provisions are delivered to ships before they are alongside the quay. In addition, the boatmen corporations collect and deliver ships’ waste to the port reception facility as required by EU regulations.

head of the North Sea Canal leading to the Amsterdam port. Helicopters are used to place pilots aboard in bad weather conditions.

Towage Port towage is available to shipping throughout the port area. New heavy-duty tugs with high bollard-pull capacities have recently been added to the modern tug fleets of Svitzer and Iskes Towage & Salvage in response to increased shipping movements. Although the absence of tide and currents makes the port area easily manoeuvrable, tug assistance is always available and especially useful in stormy conditions. In close cooperation with Damen Shipyards, Iskes Towage & Salvage developed a unique towage simulator which came into operation at the end of 2013.

In 2013 CVV expanded its fleet with a catamaran crew tender. The IJmuiden boatmen use these tenders to transport parts, supplies and post to vessels anchored some ten nautical miles off the cost of IJmuiden. In addition CVV provides services to the offshore wind turbine parks on the North Sea with tenders transporting the maintenance crew and technicians responsible for repairs and maintenance.

Port waste reception New sustainability rules dictate that ships should deliver waste, garbage and sludge to an authorised reception facility. Amsterdam Seaports has such installations, where the ship’s waste is recycled or disposed of in the correct way. A number of companies, including MAIN, Bek & Verburg, Marpol Services and Waterboot van den Bovenkamp, also collect the waste from onboard.

IT services Worldwide chartering brokerage is communicated by BTS (Business Telecom Solutions), the regional maritime cyber centre, operated by KVSA in IJmuiden. KVSA is a shipbroker that provides a full range of IT business-to-business services for the entire Amsterdam port region.
