AMERICA’S DEADLIEST SHOOTINGS ARE ONES WE DON’T TALK ABOUT On any given day in America, an average of 65 of our mothers, brothers, partners, and friends are taken from us by gun suicide. And in Missouri, the majority of gun deaths are suicides. But tomorrow’s deaths could be prevented. Give your loved ones a second chance at life. Fighting the Good Fight Some of the bravest people I know are Breast Cancer Survivors. This deadly disease has killed millions. What is Breast Cancer? Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast grow out of control. There are different kinds of breast cancer; the only way to find out is by seeing what cells in the breast form cancer. Most women get breast cancer in the ducts or lobules. The lobules are the glands that produce milk. Breast cancer can spread outside the breast through blood vessels and lymph vessels. Breast cancer spreads to other body parts; it’s said to have metastasized. The two most common are Invasive ductal carcinoma: The cancer cells begin in the ducts next to the outside into other parts of the breast tissue. Invasive lobular carcinoma: Cancer cells start in the lobules and then spread to the near breast tissues (U.S. Department of Human Health Services). It is not discussed very often that males can also have breast cancer. 1 out of 100 is diagnosed with breast cancer. Yes, breast cancer is often sound in women, but men should look for the signs and symptoms. Men’s most common breast cancers are Invasive ductal carcinoma, Invasive lobular carcinoma, and Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is cancer cells only in the lining of the ducts and have not spread to other tissues in the breast. I had the opportunity to interview an incredible woman named Casandra Batdorf. She is a breast cancer survivor that lived to tell her story to others. Casandra explained that she always kept her yearly checks for breast exams. In 2016 the doctor spotted something. The doctors assisted Casandra should come in for a biopsy and sonogram. The doctors found two tumors that followed a genetic test to see if this was inherited. After the test, the doctors discover malignant breast cancer stage one. Angelina Joel Lee had to do the same genetic test called BRCA. This gene test is
PAGE 6
for breast and ovarian cancer risk. DNA analysis detects harmful changes based on personal and family breast and ovarian cancer history. A positive result means you carry the risk of cancer. A negative impact means you might have a mutation the doctor hasn’t discovered yet. In Casandra’s case, her doctors told her that her family history of eating habits could cause breast cancer. The treatment she had to administer was radiation for twelve weeks every day. Casandra was blessed that she had no side effects from the radiation. Beating cancer was a respectful victory. Casandra’s mother is also a breast cancer survivor. Casandra took her mother to her doctor’s appointment with her. I asked Casandra what she would tell others to help them if they got a call as she did. She said to bring someone with you to ensure someone else can help you retain the information. Casandra stated that individuals must watch their diets and not consume a lot of liquor. In conclusion, Amps Magazine Phoenix would like to give a big shout to all the individuals that beat breast cancer. We want to provide humble condolence to the family and friends who endure the pain of losing a loved one.

Let’s Talk About It By Dani Jones
Trump A romantic gesture or another tax evasion scheme? Definitely another case of what they know and what we don’t know. Its genius though. Check this out. Recently, former President Donald Trump laid his ex-wife, Ivan’s Trump, to rest at his golf course in Bedminster, NJ. Under New Jersey’s tax code, cemetery companies are not only exempt from real estate taxes, rates, and assessments or personal property taxes, but also from business taxes, sales taxes, income taxes, and inheritance taxes. Trumps family has registered a funeral service in NJ and then made all of the arrangements to have his former wife buried at the first hole on the course as a memorial. Not only is this adding the to the list of businesses for the generational wealth for the Trump family but it also allows them to get out of having to pay taxes in several categories. I don’t know about yall, but this is genius to me. …
Student Debt Relief Recently it was announced by the current president Joe Biden that he would be forgiving $20,000 worth of student loans for those that received Pell Grants and $10,000 worth for those who received regular financial aid and are making under $125,000 annually. There has been a lot of opinions about this from America’s tax payers. For me personally, it’s not enough. Biden initially campaigned relieving up to $50,000 worth of student loan debts but this amount is not even half. I feel like we’ve been bamboozled and lied too! Some people are complaining that this is too much and unfair to those who have paid off their student loan debts. To those that still have debt, this is a great thing to help out their debt-to-credit ratio. That debt-to-credit ratio is what holds a lot of middle-class Americans back from being able to live
the American dream that has been promised to us all. Not to mention all the interest that has been accruing on these loans. The relief doesn’t even cover that. The problem is, this would erase an estimated $300 billion in student. That runs the risk for colleges to increase their tuition rates for future generations to come because now colleges don’t have to worry about borrower being able to make their payments. Not to mention, for those stuck in the middle class due to credit score ratings, having some of the debt relieved will boost their credit scores. I am pretty sure it the upper-class citizens that will mostly have a problem with this because based on America’s history, it wants people to stay in their place. Also, lest I forget, you will only qualify if you have taken out a federal student loan in the past. Sorry to all the private borrowers. Dani@KhepeRaAlyce.com www.KhepeRaAlyce.com

Roe Vs Wade Overturned By: Kiana Earley-Palafox
How does it affect women of color? I want to start this by saying that the overturn of Roe V. Wade was not something I personally welcomed with an open heart and open arms. I, like many women, sat there and wondered: “What is going on here?” I wanted to know why, after several decades, here we are again speaking on female bodily autonomy. Once the initial shock settled, I began to think about the women who at that time, were probably holding pregnancy sticks in their hands. Fearful. Feeling alone. There seemed to be more laws legislating the female body than studies to fully understand the female body. I also thought about the women who don’t have the means to travel to states that would protect them. There just seems to be something fundamentally wrong about it all. I thought about the rise of femicide. I thought about the rise in crimes against women. Seeing large crowds of women take to the streets. Demonstrating their right to protest. Disagreeing with The Supreme Court and showing just that. I didn’t speak on it as I watched and listened to those around me. One of the main things I sat to ponder was if the laws that now had women nervous, would lead to the mass incarceration of black women. It is no secret that black men make up more than half of the prison population. Even though African Americans make up 12% of the population, they make up
33% of the prison population. The factors very from court appointed lawyer to longer sentencing based on race. My worry is that when Black women are unable to carry in states where even a miscarriage is seen as a great offence, that black women will be locked up for good. Brown women as well. Locked up for something their bodies cannot control. No woman regardless of color should be subjected to review after experiencing child loss. However, I fear when it comes to women of color, courts won’t be as lenient. Instead of dehumanizing black women, the carriers of the Eve Gene itself, we should focus on politicians that want to help minority women. Politicians who invest in medical reform. One that teaches of generational trauma and how that is carried within black women and passed to their children in utero, one of the reasons for a high infant mortality rate. A medical reform that puts the woman and her needs first instead of steading out a census. Protect black women and the families that depend on them. Protect black children from the womb to the classroom.

Walking In Silence (Domestic Violence)
October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Many people are ashamed of their life experiences with domestic violence. There is so many walking in silence. Some of the reasons is no help from family and friends, no resources where to go, or just being scared to leave their situation. Different forms of abuse are not always known when you are in an abusive relationship. Mental abuse actions are isolation, verbal assault, and humiliation. Emotional abuse is some of the same signs as mental abuse. Financial abuse is withholding money, controlling all household spending, or refusing to include their partner in financial decisions. Physical abuse is visible and nonvisible abuse that is non-accidental trauma. Women feel that they are living double lives if others only knew what was happening behind closed doors. Not knowing who they can talk to or trust, they live in fear of their attacker until they can come up with the strength to leave. If women or men find themselves in this situation, find someone they can trust to talk to and devise a game plan.
that are in domestic situations. Men in these situations are embarrassed to speak out. Most resources need to be suitable for men as well. Since the COVID-19 epidemic, more domestic abuse cases have been reported worldwide (National Library of Medicine). If you are ever in this situation, talk to someone you can trust, develop a safe escape plan, and get professional help. There are some resources here in Arizona: Against Abuse Inc 520-836-1239 A New Leaf|Community Alliance Against Family Abuse (CAAFA) 480-890-3039 Fresh Start Women’s Foundation 602-252-8494 National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233)
It is widely known that there are issues with the abuse of women. It is underrated that men experience emotional and physical abuse. There are not enough resources for men

“King” As she sits upon her throne She waits for King to come home Just a Queen on the throne Patiently chilling alone. As she sits upon her throne She watches the Jokers dance Pulling all the moves Trying to get in her pants. As she sits upon her throne She waits for King to come home She sees him in the crowd Because he stands alone. As she sits upon her throne She got his gold crown Sitting right inside her But she waits to be found.

The Perspective
By Antonio Hickman
I’m writing my article literally at the last minute. These last 3 weeks have been amazing from a few different perspectives. I’ve had the opportunity to put myself in other people shoes, sort of speak. I was able to speak with women ranging from the ages of 25 to 31 and one woman was in her early forties. They all had one thing in common: they didn’t date because they don’t trust men. Especially men from Las Vegas (that came from two of the women). I understand their perspective with an open mind. Men and women are both flawed! Each and everyone of us will go through our trials in life. Which leaves me to look at life through different lenses; of what things truly are in life and not what they should be. We could often find ourselves missing the big picture. What’s more important than one’s character? I ask this question because as a man, I understood why they would be reluctant to date. The expectations of anyone telling the truth would be real! However, giving a person a choice to accept the truth lies within the character of both individuals. Women would you date a married man? I’ll answer this: YES! Men, would you date a married woman? YES! Investing your time and energy in a person is like investing in the stock market. A risk is involved for either party. We hope the value of that man or woman shows potential growth. However, we know it takes both parties to make
BUZZED DRIVING IS DRUNK DRIVING
a relationship work and not to see what you can get out of someone. So, why would a married man or woman go outside of their marriages? Flesh holds no value to the credo of what marriage represents. This is lesson I learned firsthand. To have a perspective, we must see things as they are. Do we continue to suffer or do we choose to grow? To my beautiful women out there, no sin Is greater than the other. Believe me, a peace of mind is everything! And with love, comes divinity. Loving self first is required to see your divine purpose. This also applies to the men as well. We also must know our self-worth. Men disregard having a relationship as soon as a woman shows no respect or appreciation for being a good man. More likely than not, they’re caught up in their own bravado. Talking to these young women left me thinking: what’s in store for my daughters? As a man, and knowing what the world is, I want them to understand who they are. I don’t want them to be cynical, bitter, nor afraid to love. Make good choices in a man’s character. That’s my job as a father: to lead by example and teach them not to get caught up with the idea of love, however, to see things as they are and to discern the difference between infatuations and love.

The Normalization of Black Girl ‘Magic” by: Nina Garrett
September was self-care month. Now when we speak of self-care, us ladies tend to think of spa days, massages, and all sorts of pampering events. We think of the fellas getting a fresh cut at the barbershop and yeah, even a mani-pedi (we see you at the nail shop wink wink!). Yes, pampering is beneficial for the mind and body but what I want to focus on is taking care of our bodies on the inside as well as the outside. There is a saying that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Basically, what this means is, it’s much easier to prevent health problems than it is to fix or cure them. So, as we consider September as ‘Self-Care Awareness Month’, let’s not forget that annual check-ups and lab work as well as dental exams are also a part of self-care. Let’s also not forget that our mental well-being is just as important as having a healthy heart, lungs, kidneys, etc. So, if you’re not feeling mentally healthy, seek out a healthcare professional to assist you with that as well. Stay beautiful inside and out.

Justice!
by: Anthony Spradley
M
ost paramount, I extend my most genuine and sincerest gratitude to you and your magazine for your beautiful job of letting one’s voice be heard. Job well done, considering the hand you were dealt when you first started your magazine. I am eternally grateful for the glimmer of hope you have given me for allowing me to tell my story. Although my opportunity to communicate directly with you is under such seemingly misfortunate circumstances, I wish you and your magazine continuous success and the best of endeavors in life. I also like to commend you for not only the outstanding work you have done but also for what you continue to do with your magazine and for making prison reform heard. Thank you, and know that you are appreciated! We can’t ignore a severe problem within the justice system. We have to put in relentless efforts to reform the quote, “Free World for the ordinary American citizen: Black, White, Hispanic, etc.” It’s been a very long 25 years, which has allowed me to ponder in retrospect on what I did wrong. However, I have done some introspecting and deep-down soul searching upon the tone of the wrong decision that has taken me away from my family and society. It has taught me more than ever that experience can be the costliest I have paid so dearly. My freedom has been taken, which is most valuable to me. Losing my freedom, I know my family needs me so much now. It hurts me to the core of my heart that I cannot be there for them as the man I am today. Indeed, I may not be able to change what has already been done, but most definitely, the lessons I have learned are conducive to the better person I have become today. A better man, father, son, brother, and an overall better citizen in society. I accept full responsibility for my wrongdoing and am prepared to repay my debt to society while I move forward with my life. Also, I have come to understand prayer needs action, and I am ready to demonstrate those actions now for me and in society for others. I have a life sentence at the age of 53. I was 28 years old when I received this life sentence without violence. Let me explain to you how I received the life sentence. I was sentenced to life in prison solely because of judge-made findings regarding my case’s leadership role and murder cross-reference enhancements. I was acquitted of murder by the trial jury and never charged with a leadership role. The judge-made findings triggered a life sentence for me. These sentencing enhancements had exceeded the sentence authorized by the jury’s verdict. I was sentenced
PAGE 20
in 1999, and from here, I want you to see the belief in my claim and help you understand how I’m being held on an unconstitutional law as of today. Had I been sentenced today; the results would be that I would not have a life sentence. I was convicted before the Supreme Court handed down its holding in & quote; Alleyne v. United States (2013)’. In Alleyne, the high court held that any fact that has an impact on a defendant’s sentence other than a prior conviction violates the Sixth Amendment if not charged in an indictment, presented to a jury, and proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The problem in my situation, although the high courts ruled uncharged enhancements are unconstitutional, it didn’t make Alleyne Retroactive. Therefore, acknowledging sentences impacted by unconstitutional enhancements leaves no recourse to rectify the matter. With the light being shown on how the enhancements played a significant part in my life sentence, I feel and have shown to be a textbook candidate for relief. I’m asking for help. I respectfully seek a reevaluation of my conviction regarding & quote; all enhancements received, which were never presented to a grand jury for consideration of indictment and presented to the jury in my trial quote; I’m being held under a bad law. How can it be? Especially if you find out you were using the wrong interpretation of the law today, and one was sentenced two decades ago under this bad law, the constitution understands today. Being that I was convicted before the constitution gained this understanding about the bad law, I cannot get the benefit of it. I don’t understand this. I need some clarification. How can you make lousy law good law? I’m being held unconstitutionally. I am asking for help. I need a light shined upon my situation. I take no issue with my conviction. In fact, I’m very apologetic for all those affected by the errors of my ways. I pray that help is found in my words. My name is Anthony Spradley. I am 53 years old with no prior convictions and have a non-violent case. I have been doing these 24 years within this place of confinement. I have been nourished with constant growth. I have learned how to shift
away from the self-centered, instant gratification manner of the irresponsible man I once represented. I come before you in comfort-seeking emotional help and support. I’m seeking and asking for leniency. I made mistakes in the past, but the sentence of life is more of a crime than the crime that I did commit. May I add that I’m a non-violent offender. Releasing me will advance me to becoming a rehabilitated man and a productive member of society. I’m ready to serve my community as a positive pillar, a gainfully employed tax-paying citizen, and an advocate for change in the judicial system. I have a network of people who will provide me with the practical and emotional support I need to adjust to the free world. In these 24 years of reconditioning, the facilitators have equipped me to rejoin society. I have spent my time listening, learning, and living within boundaries to make me the man I am today. The man I once represented has died for me the be the man I am today. The man I am today is equipped with the skills needed to help me incorporate into life outside of this institution. I write these words standing in the gap. I’m writing these words passionately because society deserves to see that the correctional system works by giving me a second chance
in life. I express that I am also passionate because, after these 24 years, such purpose has become personal. After these 24 years, I have done my part to rectify this matter. In completion, I salute Amps Magazine Phoenix for being the token and voice for me to be heard and helping me move forward in regaining my freedom. Bring awareness on how the enhancements played a significant part in my life sentence. If I were to be sentenced today, I could not receive more than a 20-year sentence with today’s law. I am a textbook candidate for a second chance at life. I want you to know who I am and what I am. Understand, I am not a bad person; rather, just in a bad situation at the moment. I also understand that this is a situation and not my destination. God is not done with me. Now it’s time for the community, my children, family, and friends to see the change and rehabilitation of Anthony D. Spradley. I’m sending this with prayer, passion, love, and purpose because Anthony D. Spradley has a purpose. God Bless Kenya, her magazine, and the eyes and hearts that my words reach and touch.
