very year, the American Society of São Paulo throws an elaborate party, better known as the Annual Gala, to help raise funds for two selected charities in need of financial assistance. While the night is filled with dancing & dining, bubbles & bidding, the ultimate winners of the evening are the children of these benefiting charities.
Associação Criança Brasil
This incredible NGO is involved in the practice of social assistance activities aimed at children and adolescents in need. Acting in São Paulo, it recognizes the important time of childhood and adolescence in determining and establishing lifelong moral and social values. Associação Criança Brasil’s mission is to contribute and assist low income families
within the areas of education, care, food, and nutrition of their youth. The organization hopes to help in the development of fulfilled citizens that possess respect, strong ethics, transparency, solidarity, and feel a part of society. Criança Brasil fights against poverty, inequality, and marginalization. ACB was founded in 1987 by Liana Borges, with help from volunteers; at that time, Criança Brasil served 20 children that did not have an adequate place to stay while their parents worked. Throughout the years, this project of social entrepreneurship has grown into the two certified programs, and serves 841 children at 7 centers. continued on page 12
W
e would like to take one last opportunity to extend a big thank you to the 2017 Gala VIP Patron ticket holders.
What is a VIP Patron ticket holder? The price of a Gala ticket is set to cover the cost of the event, and is not the source of funds for donations to the charities we support. To provide guests the opportunity to donate directly to our selected charitable organizations, VIP Patrons pay an additional R$250 per ticket (R$500 per couple) above ticket price. This additional money goes directly to the two supported charities; this year, Casa Limiar and Associação Criança Brasil (ACB). You can become a VIP Patron ticket holder for the 2018 event! For those who are unable to attend the Gala, this is a wonderful way to participate and support our charities. Contact the office at (11) 5182-2074 or email gala@ amsoc.com.br to become a VIP Patron. §

PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Healthy, Wealthy & Wise!
O
by Richard Wegman
nce a year we take the opportunity to share how we did. This year, it'll happen in a two-step process; in this article, and at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday, April 19, 2018. In an effort to not talk about numbers at the AGM, I will provide an Executive Summary of Operations for 2017 in the paragraphs that follow. I want you to know that the numbers indicate an exciting future for AmSoc. In 2017, we had many events, which generated R$753.751 in overall income. The costs of running the events and the office, with all supporting communications, was R$523,606. Our direct donations were R$88,790 in 2017. Also, we are holding funds of over R$63.000 for Casa Limiar and Vivenda da Criança. When they are ready to start their projects, we will transfer our donation of funds to them, to help with the purchase of a new school bus for Casa Limiar, and building the foundation of their new school for Vivenda da Criança. So, our total charitable commitment for 2017 was R$151,790; the largest in our history. Our cash reserves remain solid, with an increase of R$15,355 in 2017, providing us a great starting place for 2018 activities. The Board decided in mid-2017 that we needed to invest in AmSoc infrastructure if we wanted to stay abreast of technology, communications, and delivery of membership events of high quality and value. We upgraded our office computers and installed our own internal wifi. These additions have provided more secure storage of AmSoc files, improved internet access, and increased the overall speed and efficiency of our office processes.
We also purchased a new sports trailer, to store and transport all of our sporting equipment. The youth sports coaches used to keep the soccer balls, baseball bats, basketballs, etc. at their homes, making logistics of equipment availability a challenge. Now, with the new sports trailer, everything is available wherever it’s needed. We want to acknowledge John Mota, our Athletics Coordinator, for bringing this idea to AmSoc and following through to make it happen.

For taking on these monumental tasks, please join me in acknowledging our Board of Governors, office staff, and volunteers. How? When you see someone who has been a contributor, go up to them and offer a simple 'thank you'. Smiles go a long way in making sure people know that they are appreciated. Lastly, we added 109 new members in 2017. All of our events have increased significantly in both attendance and quality. We want to extend a warm welcome to our newest AmSoc-family members. Thank you for being an active part of AmSoc. I look forward to seeing you all at the AGM for a fun-filled night and a view of our future.

CONSULATE CORNER
Exercising Your Right to Vote by Consular Staff
T
he right to vote is one of the hallmarks of a democracy, giving every citizen a voice in who will lead their government at every level. Despite this being a privilege we hold dear as U.S. citizens, the process of voting from overseas can seem difficult, causing many to decide not to vote. Of the estimated 5.7 million U.S. citizens living overseas, 2.6 million of them are eligible to vote. Shockingly, only 4 percent of eligible voters living overseas actually vote in U.S. elections. Many potential voters chose not to vote because they “felt out of touch with their national or local community,” or they simply had no preferred candidate. But nearly one third of voters cited “facing issues with the process of voting absentee” as the reason they did not vote. (Data is from the 2014 General Election, reported at www.fvap.gov.)
U.S. Citizens have an ally in overcoming the barriers to voting from overseas. Since 1986, the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) has worked to ensure military service members, their eligible family members, and overseas citizens are aware of their right to vote and have the tools and resources to successfully do so - from anywhere in the world. Their website www.fvap.gov contains a wealth of voter-related resources helping to simplify the process of voting from abroad. The website resources include: a calendar of
upcoming state and federal elections, how to register for absentee ballots, how to contact your elected representatives, and how you can become a Voter Assistance Officer helping U.S. Citizens abroad exercise their right to vote. If you have never voted from abroad, or if you have encountered problems in voting absentee, this website is the ideal place to begin. U.S. Citizens may also drop off absentee ballots at the U.S. Consulate for direct mailing back to their district. Please plan for ample time for ballots to reach their destination. To use this option, first email SaoPauloACS@state. gov, advising when you would like to drop the ballot off. Drop off can be done between 2:00 and 4:00pm, any weekday but Wednesdays. The FVAP conducts Voting Assistance Officer (VAO) training workshops at well over 100 military installations and embassies/consulates every election cycle. These Congressionally mandated workshops are designed to explain to VAOs and American community volunteers the absentee voting process, the step-by-step completion of forms, and how to assist voters when they have questions about the process. The next VAO training workshop will be held on April 17, 2018 at 2:00pm at the U.S. Consulate General in São Paulo at Rua Henri Dunant, 500, in Santo Amaro. At the session, Mr. Nathan DuBois of the Federal Voting Assistance

Program will give a presentation and answer questions on how U.S. citizens can vote from overseas. The session will be in English. Because space is limited, individuals who wish to attend must send an email to SaoPauloACS@state.gov no later than Thursday, April 12, to RSVP. To ensure access to the consulate, the email must include the full name and ID information of each individual attending. Individuals who RSVP will receive a confirmation email. alia Miranda, 10-year-old daughter of Kristy and Paulo Miranda, and 5th grade student at Graded School, has been doing her share of giving back to the community. Kalia has been organizing bake sales to help raise money for one of American Society’s charities, Casa Limiar. Casa Limiar is one of this year’s Gala recipients, and they are in desperate need of replacing their current Kombi van. Kalia’s mom, Kristy, has been volunteering at the orphanage for nearly six years. After hearing her mom talk about the constant repairs needed for Casa Limiar’s existing van, Kalia decided to take matters into her own hands. She talked to the school administrators, enlisted the help of friends and her older brother Lucas, and got down to business. To date, Kalia has managed two sales at school, and one at an event in her condominium complex. She is very proud that she has raised almost R$2.000 to go toward the purchase of a new van.

When asked why she decided to do the bake sales, Kalia said, “I’ve been to Casa Limiar several times with my mom, and seeing the kids and how happy they are even though they don’t have much, I decided I wanted to do something to help them. ver a woman's lifetime, she wears many hats. Wife, mother, significantother; muse, partner, differencemaker; chef, nanny, bread-winner. As a woman, maybe you have your own business, or have thought about starting one; maybe you've made a name for yourself in your industry, or you've devoted your time volunteering; or, maybe you've found yourself here in Brazil because a job brought you here. Whatever hat you're wearing, whatever career you have, come to AmSoc's premier of WomenWork! While our target audience is women, our event will be open to anyone who wishes to attend. Every other month, a guest speaker (Woman of Merit) will join us to discuss her particular journey. Why do we do what we do, and how can we do it better? Topics will cover everything from how it is to work as a woman in her field, to starting your own business as a woman. Obtain the tools to navigate the politics of the job environment, learn how to be taken seriously in your work, and how to position yourself for the best results. We'll also cover how to give men the tools to improve their working relationships with women. Participate in our first WomenWork event, to be held on Tuesday, May 15, at 7pm. Cateto, located on R. A Girls’ Weekend on Ilhabela
Campinas Chapter Leadership Team Chapter Leader
by Tia Lopez, AmSoc Campinas Member
T
he husbands are always leaving us to go on business trips, so a group of us thought it only fair that we take a girls’ trip without them and the kids, if only for a weekend. Eight of us planned a trip to Ilhabela, a beautiful island off the coast of Brazil near São Sebastião (north of São Paulo). In the midst of planning, one lady of our group was invited to join some of her friends on their yacht for a tour of the island. When she told her friends that she was coming to Ilhabela with some girlfriends, they asked her how many. When she told them seven, they said to invite us along for yachting on Saturday! Just think, little old me from a small, rural, American town, yachting around an island in Brazil. Who would have thought? Ilhabela is known for being the location in Brazil where the higher-end of society goes to hang out, as well as being known for its bugs. Ilhabela has a tremendous amount of little bugs called borrachudos, which look like a small fly (or a large gnat) and slice into your skin, rather than just poke. You really don't know that you have been bitten until you look down and see the blood running down your leg, arm, etc. Quick Tip for Ilhabela: always use bug spray! We stayed in a nice hotel just off the water, had drinks by the pool after we arrived, and dined at a little Thai-Fusion restaurant on the water.

Saturday morning, we had breakfast at the hotel and then made our way to the Ilhabela Yacht Club to meet up with the yacht owners. Walking through the club and down the boardwalk was like walking into an entirely different world: slip after slip with 40-foot to 70-foot yachts and sailboats, each worth millions and millions of dollars. The yacht we boarded was a 70-foot Ferretti 700. She was a fabulous three-deck boat, with four bedrooms and two crew quarters, plus tons of other luxurious amenities. We had an adventurous day including some of the party having to be rescued by dingy after
being swept away by the current. The wind picked up as we motored toward the end of the island, creating swells that made going around the island impossible. Despite this, there was still plenty to see. One of the most interesting things we saw from the yacht was the vacation home of Princess Isabel of Portugal. During the time when Napoleon was rampaging around Europe, the Portuguese royal family left Portugal and fled to Brazil, for fear that Napoleon would soon invade Portugal and force them off the throne. During their time in Brazil, Princess Isabel would come to Ilhabela to her vacation home to relax. The house was beautiful, but not exactly what I expected for a royal princess. The house is still in use today, though no longer by royalty. We finally turned toward the yacht club and ended the day with drinks, snacks, and pool time at the club. Not my usual day by any means. Overall, the weekend was a lot of fun. Everyone should have a such an amazing weekend at least once in their life. §

COMMUNITY ACTION COMMITTEE
Who Benefits? continued from page 1 Associação Criança Brasil (ACB) has two youth center programs; it acts as an educational daycare center for small children, and also as an after-school center for growing kids. The daycare centers serve families with 6-monthold children until they are 4 years old. Then, children attend the before/after school programs from ages 6 to 15. The organization depends on its volunteers for day-to-day expenses and financial support for added value programs such as physiological/ psychological support, computer, music, art programs, and cultural outings. The NGO now has hired professional employees, but still depends greatly on their donors and volunteers, such as AmSoc. Associação Criança Brasil’s (ACB) Project is to update and repair the multi-sport court of the Center for Children and Adolescents (CCA) of Vila Dalva. This court not only benefits the children of ACB, but is also used by residents of the community at the end of the week.

COMMUNITY ACTION COMMITTEE
Casa Limiar
Casa Limiar is a home for approximately 20 children and adolescents, newborn to 18 years old, who are brought into the home through the São Paulo judicial system. Casa Limiar provides the children with a stable, safe, and healthy environment. The home offers the children the attention needed to succeed in school, an environment where they can learn care and respect, and a chance to enjoy their childhood. The children participate in the life of the local community through attendance in public school, preschool programs, and other educational, cultural, athletic, and leisure activities. Additionally, Casa Limiar assists the teenagers with initiation into professional activities. They also provide medical, psychological, dental, and pharmaceutical care using the public health system. Casa Limiar will be using the funds they receive from the 2018 Gala to buy a new or gently used 12 to 14 passenger van. Casa Limiar is in great need of a vehicle to provide reliable and safe transportation for the children. The current van, a Volkswagen Kombi, is over ten years old, breaks down often, and has left them stranded on the side of the road. The van is beyond repair and needs replacement as soon as possible. With a new vehicle, Casa Limiar will be able to safely maintain the routines of the children, taking them to their necessary appointments, and providing them with a more family type environment. §

ATHLETICS
The First Season of 2018 YSP Begins! by John Mota, Athletics Coordinator
P
arents, we hope you’re enjoying our Youth Sports Program (YSP) sessions as much as your kids are. We’re very happy to see an increasing number of kids enrolled in flag football and baseball, our traditional sports.
2018 SEASON 1 CALENDAR MONTH Apr Apr Apr Apr May May May May Jun Jun
Volunteers Needed
What is a YSP volunteer? Our program exists only because there are parents and other adult coaches who volunteer their Saturday mornings to our program. They dedicate one precious weekend day to our YSP kids, providing their time and expertise on specific sports. One of the things I like to do every Saturday is to personally thank every coach for stopping by and being there for us. The kids get frustrated when a coach is unable to make it. We have a good community in which both kids and coaches get along wonderfully. From time to time, our coaches have to leave. We miss the entire family when people have to head back home or get an assignment in another country. We’d love to say, “Oh couldn’t you extend your assignment for one, maybe two years? We’re going to miss you so much!” That’s how close our group is. Being an international community, that sentiment has become part of our lives. That’s why, from time to time, we’re in need of new volunteers. Currently, we need volunteers to coach soccer and volleyball this season.
May Dates
We’d like to inform that some of our Saturdays in May are subject to venue availability.

LET'S CONNECT SÃO PAULO
The Future is Now by Madeleine Blankenstein, Let's Connect Committee Member
O
n April 2nd, we had a presentation by Frederic de Mariz on how Fintech, Blockchain and Bitcoin will revolutionize banking. r. Mariz is an Executive Director at UBS. He has M close to 15 years of experience in investment banking in London, New York, Mexico, and São Paulo, having worked at UBS, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs. Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) is now the driver for technological change. Blockchain and Bitcoin are its most known applications. This is not the future; this is happening now. As it happens with any innovative tool, the world needs to acknowledge it, accept it, and use it in large scale in order to bring the price down and become available to all. DLT proposes a new architecture to record transactions, and the result is a reliable and open record of these transactions. The consensus reached in DLT is immutable. Dan Tapscott in his recent book ‘Blockchain Revolution’ indicates that audits will not be needed, as a result of the use of Blockchain Technology.
acknowledged by the regulators. Normally, a foreign exchange transaction is subject to IOF (tax on financial transactions) and withholding tax and other taxes, as well as registered within the Brazilian Central Bank system. The monetary authorities use this system to adjust the Brazilian Real and the rate of foreign currencies, in order to control monetary inflows and outflows, and the balance of payments.
Another application of the technology is the creation of cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin. Online payments are sent from one party to another without going through a financial institution. This can be very efficient, but in Brazil this method still needs to be
This means that while blockchain investments do occur, they are a small percentage of the potential financial market. Individuals and corporations still have to abide by rules related to financial flows, accounting and audit rules, tax rules, etc.

Mr. Mariz was able to clarify many issues and concerns related to the above, and we hope to present other ideas related to the subject during the year. Our next speaker will be headhunter Jacques Sarfatti, Country Manager of Russell Reynolds Associates. Details of this event will be provided through email and our website. § Want to see a specific topic explored at our next event? Facelift for Fellowship Community Church by Marilyn Diggs, AmSoc Member
S
urely the presence of the Lord is in this place, I can feel His mighty power and His grace … is often our feeling as we enter the type of church where most of us were raised. When you step inside Fellowship Community Church, the sanctuary’s enormous stainedglass window of Gethsemane Garden at the altar and surrounding multi-colored mosaics vie for your attention. Organ music, angelic voices, flowers, and flickering candles prepare your soul for worship and a moment of peace inside its holy refuge. But after the service, the fellowship and the sense of well-being, stark reality hits, as you peer over the rose-colored glasses. The fine dame is not as elegant as the first impression led you to believe. At a closer look, the old church begins to show her age. Her vivaciousness is challenged as she still serves her vibrant congregation. The once spanking new buildings built in 1953 and 1960, now meet the 21st century where “handicapped accessible bathrooms” is a required norm. So, in the same way that those Christians in 1921 joined hands to found FCC, now our members and friends roll up their sleeves to give her a facelift. With much care, we preserve the same walls that watched families grow, shared newcomers’ high expectations, and also tears as expats moved back home. The nave
has heard generations of happy voices, whispered prayers by the faithful, as well as joyful squeals and muffled sobs at baptisms, weddings, and funerals. The Brazilian economy today is different from the prosperous 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Renovations are expensive; offerings given to this independent church have decreased. So, we turn to those whom we aided when they were beginning and now we receive their helping hand. Our sincere thanks to the American Society of São Paulo, for donations of paint and funds to help hire professionals who can lead FCC members in making some necessary renovations.
Fellowship Community Church
On Saturday, March 22, work began in the kitchen. Day-long scraping, painting, and fixing hinges were only interrupted by a hotdog lunch. This is definitely a work-in-progress over the next few months. Updates will follow. We invite you to accompany the facelift either virtually, or hands-on, as we strive to maintain the building and reputation of Fellowship Community Church as the welcome place for English-speaking Christians since 1921. § Any contributions to FCC are most welcome.
