Celebrating USA's Independence Day!
Baking for SMILEs

t’s time to mark your calendars for Saturday, June 30th, as the US Consulate of São Paulo and AmSoc will co-host the Independence Day Celebration at Graded School’s beautiful facility. That’s correct, it is once again time to don patriotic attire, and maybe even wear those US Flag swim trunks for the whole world to see. We predict fantastic weather this year; in fact, it’s never rained on this important family day! It is officially time to make your reservation and take part in a traditional American celebration! As most of you know, we have received a lot of support from the US Consulate, and especially from the Consul General Ricardo Zuniga and his lovely wife Christina, over the last couple of years. We truly cherish their involvement in the
organization and thank them for all they have done for us. We wish them well on the next chapter of their lives! We also would like to especially thank Graded School and the amazing staff who have helped us bring this event together, and generously donated the use of their space to celebrate Independence Day. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Graded!
T
here was a cookie making volunteer activity done on the morning of April 28th with Associação Criança Brasil. Bridget Maurice O'Brien (ACB's CAC Representative) and volunteers taught members of the ACB community how to make traditional American chocolate chip and sugar cookies. About 20 families were involved in the Saturday morning fun! The event was a great success, but we need the involvement of volunteers to make more events like this!
The event starts at 2pm, when we start serving the food of a typical US barbecue, complete with hot dogs and hamburgers, fixins, and your homemade salads and desserts. Our US Marines will be selling caipirinhas, beers, as continued on page 5 SMILE (Share, Mentor, Impact, Love, Engage) connects AmSoc members with kids at our sponsored charities through fun and engaging activities. We're looking for a new SMILE coordinator! We cannot bring smiles to kids faces without someone to oversee the program. Invest a small amount of your time and help make a huge difference in a child's life. Send an email to volunteers@amsoc.com. br or see our ad on page 7 for details. §

PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Taking AmSoc to the Next Level by Ariane Cartwright
L
ast month we held AmSoc’s best Gala yet, celebrating in the style of the Roaring Twenties and fundraising for some very noble causes. This fantastic event was thanks to some very special volunteers, many of whom are featured in this month’s FORUM, and to our Gala Chairs: Ruth Hollard, Judy Zanchi, and Vanessa Short. I can’t express how grateful I am to these three women and the entire Gala Committee for the outstanding leadership and organizational skills they showed in creating our Gala this year. A special thanks to our miracle working Gala team leaders: Debbie Watson, Colette Bounet, Lynda Perdigon, Sherry Esteves, Sean Hutchinson, and Wendy Thomas. I’d like to give a warm welcome to our new Board members who have graciously accepted to serve from 2018-2020, specifically: Sherry Esteves, Kristy Miranda, Stephen Penny, Cricket Stickney, and Brian Wilson. A huge thanks to Ricky Rubeiz for his years of service, as he steps down from the Board this month, and warm wishes as he pursues new and exciting work opportunities here in São Paulo. As I mentioned last month, as a Board, we are in the process of rolling out some ambitious new events and programs. At the AGM, many of you received a new membership card. Hold on tight to these in the months ahead as we launch the American Society Membership Benefits Program, exclusive to AmSoc members, with discounts to and special services from fine restaurants, spas, hotels, and other service providers in the São Paulo area. Leveraging our existing partnerships and bringing in new

ones, we aim to create added value to AmSoc membership, helping us attract new members and keep the ones we have. But Membership Benefits programs are worthless if our events don’t attract attendees and inspire people to attend future ones. So we’ll be doubling down on the quality of our events, adding VIP events for membersonly, and letting ones go that don’t meet our exacting standards. The result will be a line-up of worthy events and activities that you and your family look forward to attending month after month.

One such event is a new networking program called EXPAND, which will be targeted at young professionals. This ambitious new series of events seeks to bring young American professionals together with Brazilians and other internationals. Board member Stephen Penny will be leading EXPAND, working together with our existing Business Networking team led by the very talented and dedicated Elias Gedeon and Fernanda Gedeon. We hope EXPAND, and other new events we’ll be adding this year, will help us provide our existing membership with the quality you expect and deserve, and help us attract new members to enrich and diversify our organization.

Meet New Member Vanessa Short! Where were you born? Wales Prior overseas assignments? Paris and French Alps How long have you lived in Brazil? A little over a year now. What do you find great about Brazil? The people - they are so friendly! And my husband is one!! Places you plan to visit? I want to take a boat down the Amazon river.
What surprised you about Brazil? The size... it's just so big compared to Wales! Surprising fun fact about yourself? Before moving here last year I came to visit SP and broke my ankle on the way to the airport. In my 24 hours in the city, I spent them in the hospital and finding a shop that sells crutches before transiting to Santiago. If you could ask a Brazilian any question: Can you explain how you find your way around this city?

CONSULATE CORNER
Safe Travels by Consular Staff
E
veryone enjoys a good vacation. Travel to a foreign country can be exciting and at the same time a source of worry. Beyond the typical worries of navigating the different language and culture, security is increasingly a matter of major concern for travelers and should factor into travel plans. The mission of the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs is to protect the lives and serve the interests of U.S. citizens abroad. For many years, the Bureau of Consular Affairs has provided travel advisories for those going abroad. While the analysis of threats to travelers has not changed, the way this information is provided to travelers is now presented differently. At www.travel.state.gov the State Department provides travel advisories for every country in four color-coded levels. These new tiers make it easier for travelers to get clear, timely, and reliable safety and security information about every country in the world. Travelers can access it at home or on the go via the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ mobile-friendly website, allowing them to better understand the risks associated with travel to particular countries. The four tiers are:
Level 1
Exercise Normal Precautions (BLUE) This is the lowest advisory level for safety and security risk. There is some risk in any international travel. Conditions in other countries may differ from those in the United States and may change at any time.
Level 2
Exercise Increased Caution (YELLOW) Be aware of heightened risks to safety and security. The Department of State provides additional advice for travelers in these areas in the Travel Advisory. Conditions in any country may change at any time.
Level 3
Reconsider Travel (ORANGE) Avoid travel due to serious risks to safety and security. The Department of State provides additional advice for travelers in these areas in the Travel Advisory. Conditions in any country may change at any time.
4
Level 4
Do Not Travel (RED) This is the highest advisory level due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks. During an emergency, the U.S. government may have very limited ability to provide assistance. The Department of State advises that U.S. citizens not travel to the country or to leave as soon as it is safe to do so. The Department of State provides additional advice for travelers in these areas in the Travel Advisory. Conditions in any country may change at any time. Note that advisories within countries may vary from the overall Travel Advisory level for a country as a whole. For instance, we may advise U.S. citizens to “Exercise increased caution” (Level 2) in a country, but to “Reconsider travel” (Level 3) to a particular area within that country. Each country information page contains a Travel Advisory, Alerts, and other important details specific to that country that could affect you. Travelers should pay close attention to the entry and exit requirements, local laws and customs, health conditions, and other details to decide whether traveling to that country is right for you. You will also find the address and phone number of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. It is advisable to print out and take those with you in case of an emergency.
Additionally, travelers are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) prior to trips abroad. This is a free service to U.S. Citizens and Nationals. The STEP Program enables travelers to receive important information from the Embassy about safety conditions in your destination country. It also helps the U.S. Embassy contact you in a crisis, whether natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency. Travelers can enroll in STEP at step. state.gov/step. Wherever you plan to travel in the coming months, make www.travel.state.gov part of your trip planning. Boa Viagem! §

Independence Day continued from page 1 well as Marine polo shirts and accessories to help cover the cost of their annual Marine Ball. We will also have events for children with a group of monitors and The Hideaway Cats will provide musical entertainment. In the middle of the afternoon, we’ll hold our official opening ceremonies, which will include the US Marines Color Guard, and Consul General Zuniga will read the President’s Independence Day Proclamation. Last month, AmSoc held our annual Gala Celebration and with the funds raised at this amazing event we will support two of our organizations selected by the Community Action Committee. The first is Casa Limiar, who needed to acquire a new van to transport their kids. With the help of many members of AmSoc, they have located a van and secured the remaining finances needed to purchase it. The second is Associação Criança Brasil, who is planning to expand their facilities to provide better play areas for their children. Thank you to all who came and supported the Gala. Through your help, we are able to make the lives of many children much better! These two organizations will be provided with checks during the event to support their good works! To participate in the Independence Day activities, you may register through the AmSoc website, or by calling the AmSoc office at (11) 5182-2074, or by sending an email to contact@

Take Some Time for Yourself by Jackie Wyant, Managing Editor
M
ost women will agree that our lives are quite busy. There always seems to be a million things you have to do, and never enough time for the things you’d like to do. If your busy life caused you to miss our May launch of WomenWork, take some time for yourself and attend our July event. Every other month, a guest speaker (Woman of Merit) will join us to discuss her particular journey. Why do we do what we do, and how can we do it better?
Participate in our second WomenWork event, to be held on Tuesday, July 17, at 7pm. Cateto, located on R. Francisco Leitão, 272, in Pinheiros, is graciously providing us their upstairs space for our event. Space is limited, so be sure to RSVP at amsocwomenwork.eventbrite.com before July 16th. The Women of Merit speakers for July are Fernanda & Taciana, from 'The Girls on the Road’ (www.thegirlsontheroad.com). A few years ago, Fernanda and Taciana asked themselves how they could help make a difference in the gender equality movement. Instead of continuing only as observers, they decided to actively participate in empowering women. They wanted to find a way to use their experience, knowledge, and network to build something that could positively impact other women, as well as men. From July 2016 to October 2017, Fernanda and Taciana traveled the world, collecting stories and

inspiration from women entrepreneurs that struggled, persevered, and succeeded in spite of all obstacles. As they actively reached out to women in various careers from all corners of the globe, they found one commonality: a lack of role models to inspire women to take that first step. 'The Girls on the Road' was created to tell these working women’s stories and share their experiences; to learn from women of all ages, and gain inspiration through their examples, stories, dreams, and accomplishments; to remind us everyday that the most important piece of our wardrobe is our confidence. There will be a short Q&A after Fernanda and Taciana's presentation, followed by

At WomenWork, we encourage social responsibility, sharing knowledge & experience for a better future, and the importance of any employment, whether paid or volunteer. COMMUNITY ACTION COMMITTEE
Christmas Shopping in July by Sue Banman Sileci, AmSoc Member
I
t’s hard to believe that we’re thinking about Christmas already, but some families are getting ready to go home for the summer. Would you consider sponsoring a child for the Angel Party and get some Christmas shopping done months in advance?
American Society of São Paulo's
19th Annual
Angel Party Saturday, December 8 @ Graded School
What is the Angel Party?
Providing São Paulo's neediest children with the Christmas of their dreams.
The Angel Party is a day when 240 children from AmSoc supported orphanages, daycare centers, and educational programs meet up for a Christmas party full of fun, food, and games. Best of all, the party ends when Santa brings each child a bag of presents especially chosen for that child.
Where & when is it?
This year the party will be held at Graded School (Av. José Galante, 425) on December 8th, 2018.
How can I help?
Santa needs help! We need to find 240 people to sponsor a child and buy a bag full of brand new and beautiful Christmas presents (backpack, pants, shirt, sweatshirt or coat, tennis shoes, flip-flops socks, underwear, a toy, and a candy treat). If you’re interested, send Sue Banman Sileci an email at angelparty. sponsors@amsoc.com.br. Choosing a child now allows you to do your shopping if you go abroad in July, sometimes more efficient than doing it here in Brazil.
A day of fun-filled activities, celebrations, and personalized gift bags for each child. To sponsor a child, Sue Banman Sileci at angelparty.sponsors@amsoc.com.br For other information, Kristy Miranda at angelparty.chair@amsoc.com.br
The Angel Party organizing committee is already starting to form, so please let Kristy Miranda know if you’d like to help. Contact Kristy at angelparty.chair@amsoc.com.br. There are plenty of interesting jobs, and it’s a great opportunity to meet some interesting volunteers involved in our community. §

AMSOC-CAMPINAS
Playing Field Pre-inauguration by Manuela Moreno, Campinas CAC member
T
he executive committee for Campinas had hoped to hold an official inauguration, but the kids were too excited. On the 5th of May, together with a selection of kids from the Escola Americana de Campinas (EAC) who had raised money for soccer nets through their own efforts, Grupo Primavera (GP) opened the field for provisional use. It was a day of great joy. The kids from the EAC community, who had welcomed Grupo kids at their school in the past, saw how proud the GP kids were to host their EAC buddies. A friendly tournament was held and the kids were delighted with their new space.

Save the Date for Feijoada on the Farm II by Malcolm Macdonald, Campinas Chapter Leader
F
ollowing the success of our Feijoada on the Farm last August, plans are afoot to make the second event an even larger success.
Please save the date of the 25th of August, 2018, for a special family day out in the country. Last year, over 140 people turned up to a wonderfully restored coffee farm over a hundred years old. On a cloudless day, kids enjoyed the freedom to run around while parents and adults chatted, watched Macaws fly overhead, and listened to the outstanding Band of Dads play classic rock tunes. This year we will focus on a theme of Country Chic, reminiscent of days gone by. “Hats on”, in other words. Mint Juleps and other accoutrements will likely make an appearance. Not to missed, it will be the main event of AmSoc Campinas for 2018. We hope to welcome new members and raise some money towards painting the wall of the new Grupo Primavera playing field. See you there! §

Did You Have a Wonderful Time at the Gala? These are the team leaders and volunteers who worked countless hours to make the Gala magic happen.
Vanessa Short, Gala Chairwoman
Working with 1-year-old assistant Thomas by her side, Vanessa coordinated the Cash Call, beverages, helped with the Live Auction organization, organized our committee meetings and kept the team positive with her always-sunny outlook and happy smile.
Ruth Hollard, Co-Chair & Venue
To say that Ruth ‘did it all’ would not be an overstatement! The lovely tree in the entryway; the sit down dinner; the music, lights, chairs, tables, tablecloths, red carpet, champagne glasses, wine, centerpieces, photo booth… all her. And she handled the budget side of things too!

Debbie Watson & Colette Bounet, Auction Committee
Both these amazing women spent hours organizing all the Live and Silent auction prizes, coordinated display sheets and bid sheets, set up the auction room the day of the Gala, and reconciled bid numbers and contacted winners after the Gala. What an enormous job!
Ruth and Colette
Though away in the USA for the 5 weeks prior to the Gala, Judy stayed in touch to finalize plans for the Patrons, Sponsors, 50/50 raffle, and auction prizes. This was her 6th year as a co-chair. We sold every single available ticket for the Gala, thanks to the hard work of Wendy, who promoted the event to new companies, friends, and expats through tried-and-true methods and new social media. She also donated a Gala auction prize and helped secure many other prizes from her contacts in São Paulo.

Through his persistence, willingness to go out to meet potential sponsors, and very efficient and professional follow up, we were able to exceed our Sponsorship Team goals, which included financial contributions from our major sponsors, the 50/50 raffle, Patron donations, and the Cash Call.
She was going to stay out of Gala work this year, but when she noticed that we needed help, she jumped right in, proactive and efficient. She developed the new check out system, got new prize donations, and worked very hard to keep the team on task. And she was taking over the reigns of AmSoc President at the same time!

This wonderful person motivated the office staff to keep moving forward, coordinated details with our major sponsors, solicited Gala prizes from AmSoc friends, paid Gala bills, coordinated distribution of auction items the week after the Gala, and did it all with such a wonderful, positive, can-do attitude.

ATHLETICS
Golf Challenge Match for the Munro Cup by John Kennedy, Athletics Chairman
O
n Sunday, May 6th, at the beautiful Guarapiranga Golf Club nestled on the reservoir south of São Paulo, the American Society (AmSoc) hosted the annual Golf Challenge against the St. Andrew Society for the Munro Cup. This year only 4 foursomes teed-off in a “Twosome Best Ball Scramble” format. The match began play at noon and was completed by 5pm, with AmSoc winning 6 match points and the Scots 2. After the matches were complete, everyone gathered in the restaurant to enjoy the company of one another over a roast pork, assorted complements, salad, and drinks. This year the American Society had to loan the Scots a few players to equilibrate the teams, returning the favor from last year when the Scots loaned the Americans a few golfers. There were the traditional awards for longest drive and closest-to-the-pin, and speeches that took place afterwards. One of this year’s star performers was Julio Cruz Lima of the Scots, who had 1 eagle and 2 birdies on par 5 holes. On the American team, it was Ceci Clark who took home the closest-to-the-pin and longest drive awards! Congrats to AmSoc members Richard Wegman, Gil Zanchi, Hamm and Ceci Clark, and Lisa Doeden for winning their matches! Over the 12 year history of this Golf Challenge, Scot golfer Doug Munro is the all-time leader in match wins with a total of 7. Second place goes to AmSoc captain John Kennedy, with 6 wins, then five golfers tied in third place with 4 wins: David Warren, Sean Hutchinson, Brian Fulford, Julio Cruz Lima, and Joe Sherman. Gil Zanchi and Alasdair Kerr have 3 match wins each. §

First Softball Tournament Win of 2018 Goes to SMAB by John Kennedy, Athletics Chairman
O
n another beautifully hot and sunny Saturday, the American Society of São Paulo (AmSoc) launched the 2018 softball season with a tournament at Graded School on April 21. Four teams participated: AmSoc, Pan American Christian Academy (PACA), the US Consulate, and SMAB, a Japanese-Brazilian team. The games started at 10:30am in a round robin format, with each team playing the other in a 1-hour time limit. After two rounds, we all broke for lunch, with AmSoc providing hot dogs, hamburgers, and cold drinks. Then, after the third round of the round-robin, AmSoc, the US Consulate, and SMAB were all tied with two victories and one loss each. A deciding game to determine the winner was played between AmSoc and SMAB, because they finished as the top two teams in net points. The US Consulate played PACA in a consolation game. The first game between AmSoc and SMAB was very close, which SMAB won after only 4 innings with a score of 7 to 6, as time ran out for AmSoc to catch up. Their final game was

set for 7 innings and no time clock. At the end of the fourth inning, AmSoc found themselves in another close game with the score at 3 to 2. What made it extra low scoring was the sun, as it was setting just where those high-arc balls came into the batter’s eye! This caused an unusual number of strikeouts on both sides, and many bad swings and near-misses that created easy fielding outs. However, this pitcher’s delight scenario changed abruptly when the sun dropped below the high-rise apartments behind center field: now the ball was easy to see again! Unfortunately for AmSoc, only the SMAB batters re-established their hitter’s eye by smacking balls everywhere AmSoc fielders weren’t. The SMAB team ran
up a score of 10 to 4 over the last 3 innings, closing out the game and becoming our 2-time tournament champions. The American Society thanks Graded School wholeheartedly for their continued support and assistance with our sports programs, both for Youth and Adult athletic activities. A special thanks goes out to Graded Athletics Director, Rob Switzer, for working with us on this and our other events. § For more photos of the event, visit the Photo Gallery on our website at amsoc. com.br/adultsports.

Have you heard about Sampa Church? by Martha Robbins, AmSoc Member
I
n a city with millions of people, it seems crazy to think you could feel alone! But this can be the reality, especially if you are new to the area, the country, and the culture. Sampa Church (www.sampachurch.com) doesn't want anyone to do life alone! Please come check it out for yourself. Sampa is an English-speaking church made up of about half Brazilian and half expats from all over the world. Just like São Paulo city, Sampa has a beautiful mix of cultural diversity. Sampa is casual, come as you are, bring your friends, hear something meaningful that can easily be applied to your life.
Love God
Sampa has contemporary worship, relatable topics, and discussion groups to get to know each other and talk about the day’s topic. Sampa Kids is a fun place to come learn, make friends, and have fun! It is available for kids birth to 10 years of age.
"Just like São Paulo city, Sampa has a beautiful mix of cultural diversity." Love People
Sampa has two small groups that meet during the week, in different areas of the city. The groups meet in homes, and 'do life' together. We simply share what is going on in our lives, laughing, maybe crying, and always eating!
Serve the City
Sampa has a serving partnership with IBTE (www.ibte.org.br), providing a program for the kids living in the cracolândia area (bit.
ly/2ry9MNN). Each month a team of Sampa volunteers serve here on a Saturday, doing various activities including songs, crafts, games, stories, puppets, and snacks. The goal is to serve the city, but also to show these kids that not only does God love them, but we love them! It is a very special time. Please come see us on Sundays at 9:59am, at our new location Club Transatlantico on Rua José Guerra, 130 - Chácara Santo Antônio (Zona Sul), São Paulo - SP, 04719-030. Sampa would like you to be involved in loving God, loving people, and serving the great city of São Paulo. §
