n March 31st, American Society hosted its first Family Day & Easter Egg Hunt event at the São Paulo Yacht Club (SPYC). The idea arose from some AmSoc Youth Sports Program parents requesting a day to get together for the entire family, while still including the traditional AmSoc Kids Easter Egg Hunt. So, why not blend both into a single event? AmSoc opted for a venue where a buffet lunch could be offered, so parents would not have to bother about bringing food for a picnic day. This was a full day event. Families arrived at 10am, and the last family left when the club closed at 6pm. We had a 2-hour slot for an extended buffet lunch, which enabled families to make use of the club’s swimming

pool before and after lunch. AmSoc members Vanessa Short and her family managed the welcome table. Family games took place from 10am until noon, with the support of the Englishspeaking Scout group, Carajas, who helped with setting up the stations where the games took place. Five stations with fun family games were set up, so parents and kids who wanted to have fun together could choose between different activities. Kids who did not participate in family games enjoyed the face painting and the Easter Bunny. We had several kids getting their faces continued on page 5

T

he Community Action Committee has exciting news! The owners of Âncora Engenharia, Hercules and Marina Nolasco, have decided to invest in a fulltime teacher for the children at ABBA and Casa Limiar, two of the institutions that the American Society supports.

Many of the children in São Paulo’s shelters and orphanages struggle in school. They’ve often been removed from at-risk situations and, with so many changes and disruptions in their lives, they lack focus in the classroom and fall behind other children their age. With the help of a full-time teacher to help them learn to read, master basic math skills, and do homework, we feel certain that these kids will begin to catch up with their peers and live up to their own potential. Thank you, Hercules and Marina! § Cover image: Teatro Municipal São Paulo Courtesy of: Guto Esmeraldo

PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Making Room for New Ideas... by Richard Wegman

I

t has been an honor to serve on the Board for the last 11 years. The American Society of São Paulo (AmSoc) has provided me the experience of a lifetime; I will carry you all in my heart, as you are my family. I am moving on to focus on my Coaching career, which has taken a back seat during my presidency. Now, it’s on to my future! As your President for the last three years, I wanted to note that we’ve built a lot of momentum. Our events have been well attended, and smiles have been abundant. New systems are in place in the office to ensure high quality and efficiency, and we have a well trained staff that cares about AmSoc. Keep the momentum going, it’s a key to success!

Board of Governors

I want to introduce you to Ariane Cartwright, who became President on April 19th at our Annual General Meeting. I find Ariane to be a very intelligent, active, and caring person. In our board meetings, she has brought quality mixed with insightfulness. She listens well, adding her ideas to make things better. She is a good leader, and will steer AmSoc in our newest direction. As you can see from my new President photo, I’ve already begun to relax and enjoy the sunshine!

Into the Future...

As you read this, we are in the midst of celebrating 68 years of AmSoc in São Paulo through our annual Gala. Each year, we come together to commemorate and honor our community and give back through charitable gifts to our partner charities. Thank you for making this a success again this year!

As we move into the second half of 2018, I’ll be working with the Board of Directors and our committed volunteers to roll out some ambitious new events and programs, as well as improve upon our existing ones. Next month, I’ll share these with you in more detail. Until then, thank you for this opportunity to serve AmSoc. I look forward to working with you in the years ahead. Sincerely,

CONSULATE CORNER

Basketball, No Longer Strictly an American Game by James Coker II

B

asketball has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I grew up in the Great State of Texas, not far from Houston where I was able to watch Rockets games in the arena then known as the “Summit.” I vividly remember witnessing Hakeem Olajuwon dominate the NBA in those years, and the pure joy the game brought to the fans and players alike. I fondly recall many times during my life when a basketball court was a refuge from whatever ailment was afflicting me. It is a sport so engrossing that you must concentrate all of your soul in it. I was especially touched when I saw Kobe Bryant’s recent Oscar winning animated short “Dear Basketball.” This film encapsulates my sorrow at the prospect of losing a longtime friend when I will no longer be able to lace up my sneakers and play – a day that, with advancing age, could be only one injury away. Please allow me a moment to weave an American historical sporting narrative, while also paying homage to basketball’s everincreasing international appeal. The game was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, while he was an instructor at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). A man of great repute, he earned no less than four Doctorates and was known variously as a physician, pastor, and athletics director. He went to war twice, once to chase Pancho Villa with General “Black Jack” Pershing at the Mexican border, and again to serve in France in World War I. Originally, the players were expected to throw the “basketball” into peach baskets. The game would then be paused after each “basket” to allow the janitor to climb a ladder to retrieve the ball to resume play. The bottoms of the baskets were removed shortly afterwards to facilitate a faster game. The game quickly developed on college campuses and became an official Olympic event in 1936. This led, in 1946, to the creation of a professional league, the National Basketball Association (NBA). The sport has always garnered international interest, but the United States has traditionally had the most talented teams. In fact, of the nineteen Olympic tournaments since 1936, U.S.

4

study, 11% of college basketball players are foreign born, and the number of foreign born players is up 40% in the last 10 years. Universities in the United States give international players exposure to NBA, and other, league scouts. College provides a big stage that can launch a university player into professional ranks by providing a stable environment and a proven track record for professional teams to consider. International players attending universities in the US can also expose players to American culture and give them a great education in the process.

teams have won gold about 80% of the time. 80%! In the modern era, the 1992 American “Dream Team” is the platinum standard for basketball excellence, and the entire team was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. Some have even said it was the greatest team in any sport ever assembled, and it was only created to re-establish American dominance in international basketball due to increasing competition. The game is transforming. The NBA today is far from being a league made up exclusively of Americans. Almost all NBA teams have one or more international players. My favorite team, the Houston Rockets, has one of the best Brazilian players to have played in the NBA, Nenê Hilário, from São Paulo state. The alltime leading scorer in professional basketball history is also a Brazilian, Oscar Schmidt. He is the leading scorer in the Summer Olympic Games and was also inducted in the FIBA and Naismith Hall of Fames. The game has reached such global heights that the USA now has strong competitors in international tournaments. Many countries now have schools and professional leagues modeled specifically around basketball. Brazil has a professional league of its own named Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB). American universities are heavily recruiting international players. According to a 2017

I truly love this game, and avidly look forward to the approaching NBA finals. I will continue to debate my picks for top ten players and teams of all time, and also involve myself in internet discussions to predict the next NBA champion, who nowadays could hail from anywhere in the world. This is the favorite time of year for basketball lovers young and old, and I predict that this uniquely, but no longer exclusively, American sport will continue to thrive as long as there is a kid anywhere in the world in a backyard with a ball and hoop, leaning out of bounds and counting down, “3-2-1… and he wins the game!” ...just like I used to do. § To get your kid playing basketball, sign him or her up for AmSoc's Youth Sports Program. Celebrating Easter continued from page 1 painted with different themes and artwork throughout the day. Families who wanted to get to know the city from the middle of the water reservoir were able to go for a ride on a 100-year-old boat. Yes, the SPYC still maintains a boat from the year the club was established. There is a story behind this old boat. As some of you might have noticed, Graded School is pretty old. It was established for Americans, to provide school for American families in town, at the start of the previous century. Americans came to work for U.S. companies, which along with British companies, set a landmark on the industrialization of the country. The Guarapiranga water reservoir, where SPYC is located, was designed and built by Americans to provide water for a hydroelectric power plant called Henry Borden, at the foot of the Serra do Mar on the way to Guaruja. The boat SPYC used to give our families a view of São Paulo from the center of the water reservoir was designed by one of the American engineers of the Henry Borden power plant.

Right after lunch, we had the traditional Easter Egg Hunt, led by Lynda Perdigon and her volunteers. The Egg Hunt was split into three different half-hour time slots, to better accommodate the different age groups we had at the event. We are happy to say that this event was a success, and that families enjoyed the day-long event. See you for the fun next year! § For more photos of the Easter event, visit the Photo Gallery on our website at amsoc.com.br/photo-gallery.

Pleasant Surprises for the Older Generation

M

by Ceci Clark, AmSoc Member

oving here seven months ago, my husband Hamilton and I felt Brazil’s warm embrace right away – from our first contacts with the new team at Avenues-São Paulo headquarters in Itaim, to the wonderful staff at our residential hotel, who took great pride in helping to find ways to meet our many needs.

Being Novos Brasileiros has meant many things. At first, it meant accepting on arrival how one feels like a dependent and helpless child. In our previous city, we spoke the language fluently, navigated public transportation, and understood the rules. Here, without Portuguese, we found ourselves a little lost in this sprawling mega-metropolis. Next, it meant living a vertical life in one of the thousands of apartment buildings that abound as far as the eye can see. In our previous cities of New York and Beirut, the East and Hudson Rivers and the Mediterranean were handy reference points when out and about. In São Paulo, it is very difficult to find sight lines that help one navigate home. At first, we tended to stick to our small corner of the city, getting to know its various sights, neighborhood characters, and services. Our subsequent forays into new parts of São Paulo have been illuminating and fun, adding

to our appreciation for what a fascinating place this is. We had hoped for friendly Brazilians, and have over and over again been richly rewarded by the warmth and charm of São Paulo and Brazil. Viewing Brazil up close, we learned that the “melting pot” characterization of the United States is not only replicated here, but is largely enhanced by Brazil’s own history. More than a hundred years of both the painful and shameful legacy of slavery and diaspora, and the successful intentional migration from the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Asia contribute to this. Accepting and enhancing the world’s food, culture, attitudes, and languages, deeply enriched the fabric of the country. It is a pleasure to find oneself inside such a vibrantly mixed society. In a country that values family and their elders, there was a huge and surprising bonus for us – we discovered we are idosas! We knew we were old, but had not yet embraced this realization. Living in Brazil has given new meaning to being over the age of 60. We have special treatment in so many ways: discount fares, half-price tickets, and skipping to the front of lines. Disappointingly, it took salespersons practically no time to assess our correct ages and proclaim us idosas, but we have

come to appreciate the respect with which Brazilian society treats its older generation. It’s a beautiful thing to live in a country that mandates and enforces kinder treatment for those starting the 7th decade of life. And it is lovely to be politely sent directly to the front of a line - part of the deeply deferential familial culture here in Brazil. There have been and will be other ways that we will try to fit into our new city, but it is a challenge we undertake willingly. We can say to anyone who asks if we enjoy living here, “Yes, we love Brazil!” §

Remember, Honor, Celebrate: Memorial Day 2018 by Marilyn Diggs, AmSoc Member

D

o you know the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day? Don´t be embarrassed. Most people don’t. Hint: Yes, Memorial Day is the traditional beginning of the summer season in the USA, but there’s more. Memorial Day is to honor those American men and women who died during combat. They didn’t come back home and eat hot dogs with us on July 4th, nor do they hear the applause of appreciation as they walk through the airports in their uniforms. Veteran’s Day, by contrast, honors those who have served or are still serving in the military. On this holiday, we reach out to vets and current military members and thank them for leaving their homes and families to face the grave dangers of war. Memorial Day observation began after the American Civil War, with the desire to honor the dead by decorating their tombs. By the

way, more Americans were lost during the Civil War (620,000) than died in both World Wars combined (521,000). By the 1880s, the holiday came to be known officially as Memorial Day. A federal mandate in 1971 set the observance on the last Monday of May. Today the homage extends to the more than one million service men and women who have given their lives for their county in all wars. In São Paulo, The American Society Veterans Association and Fellowship Community Church remember not only US veterans, but those from Allied countries as well. We also combine both Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day as we honor the fallen warriors together with living ones.

AMSOC-CAMPINAS

A Sweet Treat for Grupo Primavera by Manuela Moreno, Campinas CAC member

O

ur Annual AmSoc-Campinas Easter event was unfortunately canceled, due to many conflicting events leading to low ticket sales. This was very sad, but out of this disappointment we were able to find a silver lining. We switched promotions to ‘Sponsor an Easter Egg’ and enjoyed a superb outpouring of support. We received donations for Easter eggs from AmSoc-Campinas members, EAC parents, as well as parents from the local schools of Golden Tigers and Porto Seguro. We even received some donations coming in from São Paulo. We would like to heartily thank all our sponsors. As well as money, sponsors donated physical Easter eggs, decorations for the party, and even cupcakes! On the Thursday before Easter, the Campinas Chapter of AmSoc joined forces with volunteers drawn from the EAC community to present 160 children from Grupo Primavera not only with Easter eggs, but affection, love, and attention – such rare commodities in the lives of these children. AmSoc asked for volunteers to help organize and run the stations, and we were overwhelmed with the response from the EAC community. We would like to thank the parents and student volunteers, our brilliant photographer from Fotocafesocial who took

some of the world class pictures in this article for free, and M5Fun buffet which donated all the cupcakes to the Easter workshop. One of the pillars of AmSoc is the art of ‘giving back’. It was wonderful to see the interaction between volunteers and the Grupo Primavera (GP) kids, and see that the pleasure of helping others was rewarding to our wonderful volunteers. The GP kids enjoyed an afternoon of fun, games, and activities. We had a workshop for cupcake decorating, an Easter card drawing station, face painting, dance, and the highly anticipated Easter Egg Hunt. All

The day was filled with joy and laughter from over 140 children and their helpers from orphanages, group foster homes, and community centers, including ABBA, Analia Franco, Casa Limiar, Helen Drexel, Lar Tia Edna, SPACE, and Projeto Sol. Many thanks to all of the sponsors who donated funds to provide lunch, bus transportation, and activity supplies for the children. There were awesome skills in cooking, soccer, basketball, and tennis on display on the grill, fields, and courts!

Golf Challenge Match for the Munro Cup by John Kennedy, Athletics Chairman

S

tarting at noon on May 6th at the beautiful Guarapiranga Golf & Country Club, an American Society of São Paulo (AmSoc) golf team will tee-up against a team from the St. Andrew Society, in the highly disputed golf match for the rights to the Munro Cup - our local Ryder Cup. This regular Golf Challenge not only involves a golf match among old friends, but there will be plenty of hot food and cool drinks to go with the socializing, camaraderie, and awards. The Munro Cup was first inaugurated in 1991, when Norman Munro, a previous president of the St. Andrew Society and a true Scot, was asked by the then-President of the American Society of São Paulo, Jim McLean, to provide a cup to commemorate the winner of an annual sporting competition between the two societies. The objective of this event was to foster friendship and camaraderie amongst two great nations. Originally, the competition involved several sporting events, such as golf, tennis, soccer, tug-o-war, bridge, volleyball, and trivial pursuit. However, over the years, it became difficult to organize and find a place to host all these events. In 2005, the golf match part of the event was re-initiated when Sean Hutchinson, of the St. Andrew Society, challenged John Kennedy,

Team USA

of AmSoc, to a golf match. Resurrecting old friendly golfing rivalries between the Americans and Scots, the men invited their friends to join in, and thus the Munro Cup was reborn. Over the past 13 years, the Cup has been evenly shared, with the Americans leading 6 to 5. AmSoc will be defending the title this year. If you’d like to join AmSoc in this truly fantastic golfing day, contact John Kennedy (athletics@amsoc.com.br) for more details. To participate, every golfer will be required to wear their team’s jersey. John has extra AmSoc golf shirts, so get in touch with him if you plan to participate. §

Half-Way Through the 1st Season of 2018 by John Mota, Athletics Coordinator

O

ur kids continue to enjoy our Youth Sports Program (YSP), despite the unusual fall weather. As we approach the end of our February-June season, we have a few reminders for you.

2018 SEASON 1 CALENDAR MONTH

Schedule Update

Please be aware that our schedule for Saturdays in May has been updated. While the FORUM is only printed once a month, I usually send reminders before each session with the most current schedule. This is the best way to keep up to date on our dates and locations. Please make sure you’re getting emails from ysp@amsoc.com.br. If not, please send an email to the YSP email address, asking to be added to both the mailing list and the WhatsApp group.

Coaches Needed

Some of our coaches will be moving back home, as their job assignments come to a close. For the start of our August-December season, we will need volunteers to coach soccer, flag football, and basketball.

You might be reading this article and think you simply don’t have enough extra time to help out. Even if you cannot volunteer every Saturday, you could help out every other Saturday, or even once a month. Any way you can volunteer helps our program out immensely!

Help Celebrate the Wedding Across the Pond! by Rhonda Watters

O

n Saturday, 19 th of May, 2018, His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales will marry American actress Ms. Meghan Markle. The wedding will take place at Windsor Castle. To celebrate this special occasion, we are hosting a Royal Wedding Party in São Paulo. The Royal couple has requested that people should donate to charity rather than buy the couple gifts. In that spirit, all proceeds from the day will be donated to ACER, a community charity based in Diadema which helps over 7,000 children and adults. Jonathan Hannay of ACER was awarded the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for his charity work. While visiting São Paulo, His Royal Highness Prince Harry personally visited ACER to see their great work. At the Royal Wedding Event you will enjoy a breakfast fit for a King and Queen, plus have the possibility of winning a Lord or Lady title! Come and join us to make this a truly royal event. Send your RSVP to royalwedding@gmail.com with the reference code ‘AmSoc’. Places are limited. Most importantly, remember to wear your hats, fascinators, and tiaras! §

Brazilian Courtesy by Ann Aubrey Hanson

O

kay, time for a feel-good story. I heard this third-hand. Some of the facts might be screwy, but the event is a fact. I think. This one is about an American family who lived in São Paulo, Brazil, for three years. Shortly after they arrived, the family (Mom, Dad, and two middle-school-aged children) decided to order a pizza for delivery. This is pretty common in São Paulo (as is ordering any food, since it’s such a pain to drive to a restaurant during the week).

from the same pizza shop. Then the day came when it was time to move.

Sure enough, the two pizzas arrived and the father paid the delivery man. All was well and the family was happy.

Years later, through a set of bizarre circumstances, the father found out that for three years, he hadn’t been calling the pizza shop at all, but rather a local Japanese family. Understanding that he wanted pizza and wasn’t able to call for himself, the family had originally made the call for pizza on the father’s behalf, recognizing that an American family needed pizza.

Every Friday night for the next three years, except when they were traveling, the family ordered the same two pepperoni pizzas

They had made that same call every Friday night for three years, as the family continued to call them to order their pizza.

I choose to believe that this is not a urban myth. Tom and I both heard the story and loved it. Somehow, it so truly exemplifies the Brazilian way and courtesy. §

The father called the pizzeria number and asked for two pizzas. The pizza restaurant owner responded, but the father’s Portuguese was so bad, he couldn’t understand. So, he repeated his order for two pepperoni pizzas a bit louder in his broken Portuguese. Again, the owner tried to explain something to him, and again he couldn’t understand. He gave the order and the address, and asked if he’d been understood. “Entendi?” “Entendi.”

Getting on the Board & New Smiles compiled by Jackie Wyant, Managing Editor

Kristy Miranda

Stephen Prestes Penney

Community Action Committee

I was born and raised on a small farm in central Iowa. After college, I lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota where I worked as an Accountant and met my husband, Paulo. We later moved to Atlanta, Georgia with our two kids before moving to São Paulo in 2012. My favorite thing about São Paulo is: the traffic is crazy, cars and motorcycles are going every direction, and somehow it all works out. Drivers are more courteous. My favorite AmSoc memory is: the Angel Party is definitely my favorite AmSoc memory. It's the happiest day of the year! One embarrassing thing that has happened to me in São Paulo is: before I learned Portuguese, I bought what I thought were ham and cheese rolls to serve as an appetizer at dinner with friends, only to find out after serving and tasting it, that it was actually raw pasta with ham. §

Business Networking Committee

I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and grew up here, in the east coast of the US, and in Europe. I moved back to São Paulo, from New York City, a few years ago for new opportunities. My favorite thing about São Paulo is: the diversity of people, cultures, experiences. My favorite AmSoc memory is: the 2017 Holiday Party, and all of its positive energy. One embarrassing thing that has happened to me in São Paulo is: walking all the way into the wrong house looking for my friend's birthday party, where an intimate wedding reception was happening. §

Mateus Sampaio Bookkeeping

I am currently in my third year of Accounting at University of São Paulo (USP). My last job was in Santander Bank as a communication analyst, where I learned about various bank products. After this, I flew to Wisconsin as an exchange student and worked in customer service at an indoor waterpark/ resort. After realizing how cold Wisconsin can get, I came back to Brazil to continue my studies. Currently, I am responsible for mapping and broadcasting (through social media) all the projects that every USP campus has. This is part of Núcleo dos Direitos da USP, a human rights project in the university community. I want to work for AmSoc because: aside from believing in the charitable causes that AmSoc is involved with, I want more experience in and knowledge of accounting. Previously, I've only worked in communication, so this is a good chance for me to focus on my career. In my spare time, I like to: study languages (especially French), play volleyball, listen to music, and travel. I've been to some countries in Europe, plus North, Central, and South America. §
