O
n behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and all the children at Casa Limiar, we would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the 2018 Gala Committee and everyone who attended for their help in making a dream come true. When our liaison, Kristy Miranda, approached us last November about being one of the recipients of the 2018 American Society Gala, we were in desperate need of a new van to transport our children.
where we could no longer take the kids to do fun outings because we were unsure if the van would make it to our destination and back.
We had a very old Volkswagen Kombi that was literally falling apart before our eyes. There were more days in the month the van wasn't working than days when it worked. This van is our means of transporting kids to school, doctor appointments, and anything needed for their daily lives. We had reached a point
This van is in excellent condition, has 13 passenger seats and couldn't serve our needs better! We had only dreamed of one day having a van like this to provide a better life for our kids, and thanks to you, our friends, our dream has come true. Thank you, again, from the bottom of our hearts! §
Because of you, your generous donations at the Gala, Mr. Lyle Watters and Ford Motor Brazil for securing a good van we could purchase, and much help from the American Society Board of Directors, we are now the very proud owners of a 2013 Ford Transit van!

Throughout the month of September, the Community Action Committee (CAC) would love your donations of the following items: SOAP, SHAMPOO, CONDITIONER, TOOTHPASTE, TOOTHBRUSHES, SANITARY NAPKINS, or DEODORANT. Before dropping off your donations, please clearly label the bag with our names so they aren't confused with anything else. You can drop off your donations at any of these locations: • Morumbi (Av. Giovanni Gronchi, 4325 Ap 41) Attn: Sue Banman Sileci • Santo Amaro (Av. Washington Luis, 1576, Ap Platano 301) Attn: Kristy Miranda or American Society Office (Rua da Paz, 1431) • Moema (Av. Divino Salvador, 12, Ap 182A) Attn: Maria Stiehm
If you prefer not to shop, we can do it for you with your cash donation. We’re grateful either way. Contact Kristy Miranda at charity@ amsoc.com.br to find out more about how to donate, or if you have any other questions. Let’s shoot for a huge bunch of supplies for a huge bunch of clean, healthy kids! § Kristy Miranda (right) gives the keys of the new van to Ulisses Costa (left), Treasurer of the Board for Casa Limiar

PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Adding Personal Value by Ariane Cartwright
A
s we begin to see the end of winter here in São Paulo, it is a time to re-engage with friends and colleagues and start planning for end-of-the-year activities. It makes me very proud to know how many events we at the American Society host each month, so as you start to settle back into your routine, look to our community calendar to see what we’re offering. This month we officially launch the AmSoc Membership Benefits Program, so keep a look out for your membership card in the mail. Included in this month’s issue of the FORUM you’ll find the most recent discount offers from spas, restaurants, moving companies, etc. in the São Paulo area, all tailored for you, our members. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of these great offers and to check out the full list on our website. Do you have a company that would like to be included in our program? Get in touch with us.
Joining the AmSoc board this month is Sean Hutchinson, who will lead our Sponsorships & Partnerships team. Sean served as the Sponsorships Chair for our Gala this year, and we are so lucky that he has agreed to join the board in this important role. He’ll be working closely with me and the Board

of Governors to seek out new opportunities for AmSoc. Sponsorships for AmSoc are not just limited to our Gala; they includes all the gifts and donations we receive throughout the year to support our 10 partner charities and AmSoc itself, which is a non-profit in its own right. This allows us to continue the important philanthropy work that we do with disadvantaged children in São Paulo and support AmSoc’s own activities such as youth sports, networking events, and community events for members. In order to attract new partners and sponsors, we are pushing ourselves at AmSoc to rethink how we offer benefits, to create packages that are more tailored and bespoke. Gone are the days when simple tiered packages would suffice—these days companies expect to see value and personalization. Carrying out Corporate Social Responsibility programs that have an impact and are cost effective is of growing importance to many companies, and we want to position ourselves as their trusted partner here in São Paulo. Do you have a new idea for an AmSoc partnership, or would you like to join our Sponsorship Committee? Send me an email at president@amsoc.com.br and we’ll make it happen. Abraços,

Exploring São Paulo as a Newcomer
W
by Lisa Gingras-Rose, AmSoc Member
hile I am writing this article, it has been only four months since my husband and I have moved to São Paulo, which means that many of you may know more than I do about this vibrant city! I still have a lot to discover about Brazil and its metropolis, but I am happy to share with you some of my favorite places so far. One place I really enjoyed visiting in the centro is the Theatro Municipal, which is housed in a magnificent historical building. You can join an hour-long guided tour in English, which will bring you to the underground, where you will be able to admire the arched stone walls. Rumor has it that they are building a jazz bar down there. You will also have the chance to appreciate the grandiose main staircase and the reception rooms decorated with unique art and frescos. English tours are available from Wednesday to Friday at 11am and 5pm and at 11am on Saturday, and the best part is that they’re free! If you are looking for greenery and a quiet place to relax, I recommend you go for a picnic or a stroll at the Botanical Garden. Although it is relatively small, you can enjoy the noisefree environment and walk along the bamboo tunnel, the wooden pathway in the forest, or just rest near the pond. My husband and I visited during fall, but I would recommend waiting until spring or summer as, if it is like

America, flowers will probably be blooming around that time and the experience will be even more enjoyable. For a little weekend getaway, I recommend Campos do Jordão. This charming village is located within a 2.5-hour drive from São Paulo. It is nestled in the mountains and has lots of small buildings with European architecture. The Paulistanos enjoy Campos do Jordão mainly during winter as they like to cozy up near fireplaces and eat fondue. Over there, I highly recommend visiting the Amantikir Park, where you will find walking trails, a maze, and theme gardens. If you are a beer lover, make sure to visit the Baden Baden microbrewery

Conjuring Up an American Halloween by Laura Russo, AmSoc Member
A
ccording to last year’s Google trends data, the top Halloween costumes were dominated by pop culture hits—Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, zombies, and Game of Thrones characters—and by more timeless creatures, like unicorns, witches, pirates, and dinosaurs. And this year? The trends remain to be seen, but here in São Paulo, the place to experience the Halloween atmosphere is at the annual AmSoc Halloween party. Whether dressed as black cats, green-faced witches, vampires, ghosts, spiders, or skeletons, this is one of the many events where families can come together in an American tradition. Above all, bring your children to experience the wonders of scary and creepy sensations. We may not have the scope to provide them with such large-scale Halloween traditions as corn mazes, bonfires, and hayrides, but past events have shown that there is more than enough American-style Halloween fun to be conjured here abroad. In this fun-filled event, children and adults can dress up and play Halloween games such as pin the wart on the witch’s nose and participate in face painting, spiderweb mazes, broomstick races, and much more. Previous years have even featured such hits as a mystical fortune teller for the kids!
Even the adults may be excited by the prospect of real American candy staples, like our beloved candy corn! Last year’s event also featured a photo booth to expand the fun for the whole family, including accessories to spice up the Halloween memories. Come join the fun this year at São Paulo Yacht Club (SPYC) on October 27th. Before the event, arrives, though, volunteers of all ages are needed to cast the necessary spells and cook up the Halloween magic for a true holiday experience! Campinas Tables: A 10-Year Tradition by Malcolm Macdonald, Campinas Chapter Leader
S
ince we moved to Campinas and well before I had the honor of joining AmSoc, it has been a tradition that somewhere between September and November I find myself suiting up (and, more recently, kilting up) and, together with my wife Raquel, inviting a few friends to join us on a couple’s weekend to São Paulo to participate in the annual Caledonian Ball. Over the years we have gone so far as to rent a full-size bus for the trip, and, more recently, we have spoiled ourselves with a Saturday night at a nearby five-star hotel. In any case, this year I would like to invite the Campinas Chapter of AmSoc to join forces with us and see just how many tables we can

fill. The St. Andrew Society of São Paulo will be holding their Caledonian Ball at Espaço Transatlantico on Saturday, September 29th, with the mission of promoting Scottish culture in São Paulo. Fair warning—the Campinas tables, of which eagle-eyed AmSoc members might spot a prominent AmSoc member or two in the pictures, have more than once won a bottle of whiskey for the achievement of “having the most fun.” If you are an AmSoc member from Campinas or São Paulo and would like to join us, please contact Malcolm at campinas@amsoc.com.br so that we can secure tables in advance. §

5 Reasons to Get Excited for This Year’s Caledonian Ball! by Jennifer Licko, Scottish Dancer and Scots Gaelic Singer, Marketing and Graphics, Campinas Chapter
T
he history of the Caledonian Ball dates back to the 1840s, when George, Duke of Atholl, and his wife Anne wanted to entertain their Scottish friends residing in London. It soon became a fundraiser for Scottish charities. Today, The Royal Caledonian Charities Trust supports Scottish causes in the following areas: the elderly, children, those with disabilities, the military, the injured, and the homeless. It is estimated that over 3 million pounds has been given to worthy Scottish causes since the Caledonian Ball's inception. Scottish Organizations all over the world host their own Caledonian Ball where attendees wear their finest Highland Evening dress. There is no doubt that the Scots are a people of love and pride for their land. If you watch the hit TV show Outlander, then you have some insight about the passion the Scots hold for their country. After the battle of Culloden in 1746, the British government approved an act of parliament which meant many of these Scottish traditions were considered a penal offense. The act was repealed in 1785, but almost an entire generation of Highlanders were not allowed to honor their own culture. This history intensifies the 5 reasons to get excited about attending this year’s ball!
#1 Highland Dancing
#5 The Kilts
#2 Scottish Country Dancing
The St. Andrew Society of São Paulo will be holding their Caledonian Ball, to be held at Espaço Transatlantico, on Saturday, September 29th, and their mission is to promote Scottish culture in São Paulo.
The Highland Fling was traditionally danced by men as a celebration of a battle won. To see this stationary dance in its entirety will make you appreciate the strength and stamina it takes to be a highland dancer. Highland dances are typically danced solo and in competition— where men and women compete equally. One study showed that a half hour of dance was equal to a game of soccer. The event is known for its Scottish country dancing and it is tradition for all ball attendees to dance every reel.
#3 The Great Highland Bagpipe The highland bagpipe was named as an instrument of war and was also banned for nearly half a century in the 1700s.
#4 The Whiskey!
Whiskey is Scotland’s national drink and their biggest export, so out of respect for the culture, it’s important to enjoy it! Scottish distillers take the purest water from streams of the highlands and add the golden barley from the fields to create the spirit found in oak casks maturing in Scotland. It is not a Scotch until it has aged in Scotland for at least three years, but most single malts are dormant in Scotland for much longer.
The American Society of São Paulo FORUM Newsletter
If Sean Connery showed the world anything, it was that preserving the highland culture and executing it by wearing a kilt is beyond cool! The truth is that the kilt is a historic piece of clothing that has stood the test of time for warmth, comfort, and durability. In the Highlands of Scotland the kilt traditionally became synonymous with the symbol of clan kinship.

Calling All Angels for the Angel Party by Sue Banman Sileci, AmSoc Member
T
he Angel Party is one of the American Society’s biggest and most exciting events. For 19 years, we’ve been throwing a crazy fun Christmas party for 240 underprivileged children, and this year, on December 8th, we’ll do it again. We rent buses to bring the children to Graded School, where the children have lunch and then play games, win prizes, and eat ice cream. They also see a show. At the end of the party, Santa Claus and his wife present gift bags to each child. The party is still a few months away, but we’re struggling. We have only found sponsors for half of the children, and, with only two months to go, we worry about finding another 120 people to help us! Can you? If you would like to sponsor a child, we’ll send you a child’s name, age, and sizes along with a picture or two if we have them. You buy a sweatshirt, a backpack, a toy worth R$85 or more, a box of chocolate, a pair of tennis shoes, a pair of flip-flops, a pair of pants, a T-shirt, a pair of socks and three pairs of underwear. The shopping can be a lot of fun as you try to find just the right thing. If you’re headed abroad, you can do it in one stop at Target, or you can certainly do it in Brazil. If shopping isn’t your thing, you can donate R$550 per child and we’ll do it for you. As you’ll see in the quotes, some people sponsor a child as a family or as individuals. And some organize themselves into groups—either in a company as a team-building experience or just as a group of friends. We’re happy to talk about different ways to do this. One thing is for sure: The Angel Party Committee needs your help (and pretty desperately)! Contact Sue Banman Sileci at angelparty.sponsors@amsoc.com.br if you’d like to sponsor a child. We’ll be very excited to hear from you! §

What I like the most is everything, because it's cool. And the present that I like is everything and the toys. Note from Julio, one of the many children who benefit from your support of the Angel Party
For us at Caterpillar, it’s a huge privilege to be able to support this beautiful and meaningful event that helps so many children. Every year we count on a large number of volunteers to shop and put together the gift bags so that they’re ready for Santa to give at the party. We’re always excited to find out which children we’ll sponsor and we work hard to do a good job. The party itself is a very special event. Besides being a moment for us to spend a lovely day playing with children, we feel like we’re receiving a gift when we see the happiness of the children opening their presents. It fills our hearts with joy.

When Rosita and I agreed to sponsor a child, we covered the city! We had the sizes, a picture of our young boy, and we wanted to get it right. We loved meeting him at the Angel Party—just watching him running, playing, eating, smiling, eating some more and then an enormous grin while he ripped open the boxes and bags as quickly as possible. The best part of this rewarding experience was the enormous hug we got and the sight of what true happiness is, seen through the eyes of an eager and very excited youngster.
I was blessed to have volunteered and sponsored children for the Angel Party each of my six years in Brazil. I loved shopping for “my kids” and knew that the clothes and toys I chose were the only brand new items they would receive that year. The highlight of each Angel Party is the end when the children receive and open their gift bags. It was so special to sit with the children I had sponsored and watch their faces light up as they unwrapped each gift. The memories bring tears to my eyes! I encourage everyone to sponsor and shop for a child for the Angel Party. You will be blessed more than the child you sponsor!
– Alan Blau, AmSoc Treasurer
– Karen Murkowski I attended the Angel Party for the first time in 2017 and it was one of the best days ever! I couldn’t believe all the food and activities! The best part was receiving gifts from Santa Claus that my “Angel” bought specifically for me! I can’t wait for this year’s party! – Rebeca, 14 years old, Casa Limiar

American Society of São Paulo presents
Antunes serves as Cushman & Wakefield’s Chief Executive Officer for the South America Region, which includes Brazil (the company’s largest operation of the region) as well as Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, and Venezuela. According to her corporate profile at Cushman & Wakefield, Ms. Antunes is responsible for handling the region’s business operations, including its nearly 150 million square feet of space in the corporate, retail, and industrial realms. Enrichment Through Empowered Women by Jackie Wyant, Managing Editor
W
hen you get together with friends or coworkers, what do you talk about? Do you discuss opposing views? Do you agree on the current narrative? While being informed can help bring more sense to the current conversation, sometimes you need a break from the deluge of current news. To combat news burnout and add something fresh to the conversation, The New York Times recommends some fictional books by 21st century female authors.
Americanah
by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie "A resonant and fiercely intellectual novel about a Nigerian woman named Ifemelu who leaves Africa for America and suffers here before starting a blog called “Raceteenth or Various Observations About American Blacks (Those Formerly Known as Negroes) by a Non-American Black” and winning a fellowship at Princeton. “Americanah” brings news, on many fronts, about how a new generation of immigrants is making its way in the world." — Dwight Garner
Outline
by Rachel Cusk "A crisp, poised and cerebral novel that has little in the way of straightforward plot yet is transfixing in its
unruffled awareness of the ways we love and leave each other, and of what it means to listen to other people. The book’s events take place over the several days that a divorced English writer named Faye spends in Athens, where she has gone to teach a writing class." — Dwight Garner Looking for new interactions and conversations? Our third WomenWork event, to be held on Tuesday, September 18th, at 7pm, features Women of Merit speaker Lucy Nunes, Superintendent of Chapel School. There will be a short Q&A after Lucy's presentation, followed by networking, socializing, and a tasty drink or two to close out the evening.
Cateto, located on R. Francisco Leitão, 272, in Pinheiros, is graciously providing us their upstairs space for our event. Space is limited, so be sure to RSVP at amsocwomenwork. eventbrite.com before September 17th! § Have a specific topic you'd like us to cover? Texans in São Paulo by Martha Robbins, AmSoc Member
B
eing an English speaking church in São Paulo, Sampa Church had the privilege to host a group from Austin, Texas for a short term mission trip in July. It was a week packed with serving projects, showing them as many tourist sites as we could fit in, and of course enjoying some authentic Brazilian food and drinks! Here is what our week looked like with the Texans and some of their perspectives of the great city of São Paulo.
Go Local & When Possible, Go Free
One of the best experiences visitors can have when traveling is seeing the local places. That “hole in the wall” cafe, Coffee Corner, where nobody speaks English and they have great
feijoada and refreshing suco de abacaxi served by your favorite guy, Gil. Walking on Avenida Paulista on Sunday afternoons when it is closed to cars is a must. The Texans enjoyed all of the street vendors, local artists, jewelry makers, and live bands. Trianon Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the city and is a tropical, lush, green getaway nestled in the center of all of the concrete skyscrapers. Beco do Batman was such a hit for these Austinites! A vibrant graffiti district in Vila Madalena. A bright, colorful backdrop for all your Instagram photos. We also took them to the rooftop of Copan. This building is famous in São Paulo and has amazing views of the city. Tours go up two times daily, and it is free! It is a great way for your guests to take in the vastness of this massive city. And don't forget Mercado Municipal and Rua 25 de Março. An experience they will never forget! The crowded streets with locals trying to sell you anything and everything. And Mercado has hundreds of colorful, flavorful fruits from all over São Paulo and Brazil. The workers love to cut fruit for the gringos to taste! There is also a great souvenir shop and places to eat pastel, mortadella, and açaí. Saving the best for last, the only destination not free, but very much a part of Brazil… churrascaria! Our choice was NB Steakhouse, one
we have been to many times with guests, and the quality and service have never disappointed.
Serve the City
There are so many ways to give back to the city. We had a great week serving the city of São Paulo. One way was with a non-profit organization that Sampa Church already has a relationship with and serves once a month, IBTE. The Texas group served the kids who attend IBTE for four days by doing a day camp packed with arts and crafts, games, Bible stories, music, and snacks. These kids vary in age from 2 to 16 years old. They all live in the Luz area, near Cracolandia, and have a rough life. IBTE offers these activities in hopes to

belonged; they received me as one of their own. The beauty and warmth of the people is felt to the core of your being!" "What a world class city! The food, the sites, and most of all, the people." "São Paulo was awesome! I loved how diverse the city is.” "I enjoyed the food! Especially feijoada and the many delicious fruits. I miss it all so much already!"
make an impact in their lives so they will not choose the path of drugs and crime. We also had the opportunity to serve with Cristolandia. This is an amazing group of missionaries and volunteers who do a service and feed people from Cracolandia and the homeless in that area. We got to help them serve breakfast and lunch, assist in shower duty, wash dishes, and pray for people. These volunteers are absolutely amazing, doing this 6 days a week for hundreds of homeless. They function totally on donations. It was such an eye-opening experience for all of us. Working with them gives so much perspective and makes you more grateful for what you have, making you want to
give back. We would encourage you to check out these non-profits or contact Sampa Church for more ways to get involved.
A Texas Perspective
What the Texans loved about São Paulo: "The culture was vibrant and so welcoming, the city has so much to offer." "I loved the sense of community, everyone was interested in helping us have a great experience." "It was the first time I got to be somewhere and not be questioned as to whether I
Thank you for letting us share the journey of Texans in São Paulo. We hope it energizes your passion for the city and gives you some ideas for your next guests. We would love to have you join us on Sundays at Sampa Church, an English-speaking church called to love God, love People, and serve the city. § Would you like to see your community group featured in a future issue of the FORUM?
