Welcome From Our President Dear Friends, Welcome to Naples Ballet’s production of Don Quixote. Tonight we celebrate our 10th production featuring both guest artists, as well as students from the Naples Academy of Ballet. We are pleased that you have chosen to join us for what promises to be an outstanding performance. Don Quixote is a ballet originally staged in four acts and eight scenes, based on an episode taken from the famous novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes and was first presented by the Ballet of the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. It is the story of Don Quixote, who having read his fill of romances about knights and chivalry, decides to set off on his travels in order to achieve great feats and bring glory to his name. We are sure you will enjoy our version of this classic tale. Each year we marvel at our student’s ability to tell a story through the art of dance. Months of rehearsals and long evenings spent in the studio result in the inspired performances you are about to see. This year’s cast includes students ages four to adult, many of whom have been studying and dancing with the Naples Academy of Ballet since its inception. Our seasoned dancers dedicate an average of 13 hours per week to training and rehearsals, while still maintaining their educational responsibilities. Many go on to study further at prestigious professional training programs around the country. This production would not be possible without the support and dedication of our team members. Artistic Director Christophe Maraval demonstrates his professional expertise and creativity through beautiful choreography and is joined by Liliam Gomez and Charin Leyva in preparing our students for the rigors of performance. Bobbie Orban and Stephanie Pavlik capably coordinate the efforts in our office, as well as on the stage, keeping both the Academy and the Ballet businesses on track. I would also like to thank our students and their parents for their hard work and support in making this weekend’s production a success. And finally, I’d like to thank The Naples Players and Sugden Community Theatre for welcoming Naples Ballet into their home, so that we may bring the art of dance to the Naples community. We hope you enjoy our production of Don Quixote, and we invite you to save the date for The Nutcracker performances in December 2014. With Warm Regards,
Toshiko Tompkins
Now is the perfect time to find your dream home!

We serve as a training ground for recreational dancers, as well as those who are seeking professional careers in dance or related fields, and daily training is essential for our students to be technically prepared. Christophe Maraval After nine years as Principal Dancer with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Christophe Maraval retired at the end of the 2007 season to join the faculty at Ecole Superieure de Ballet Contemporain de Montreal. Mr. Maraval has been teaching Vaganova method with French flair and American musicality and energy to all levels of students, and has coached for numerous competitions and performances. Mr. Maraval began his training at the Opera de Paris and the Superior Conservatory of Paris and at age 16 joined the Ballet National de Nancy under Pierre Lacotte. During his career, Mr. Maraval danced with various professional ballet companies in the United States and Canada as a Guest Artist including Tulsa Ballet, Oklahoma Ballet and Gala Des Etoiles of Montreal 2004 and 2007. With a vast repertory, some of his favorite ballets are from George Balanchine, William Forsythe, Val Caniparoli, Ben Stevenson, Richard Tanner, Glen Tetley, Jose Limon, Jerome Robins, Ulysses Dove, Kent Stowell and more. Numerous choreographers created ballets for Mr. Maraval such as Kirk Peterson (Amazed in Burning Dreams, Carmen), Paul Gibson (Rush, The Piano Dance) and Dominique Dumais (Scripted in the Body, Time and Other Matter). Arcadian Broad Arcadian Broad hails from Titusville, Florida. His background in dance is very diverse—it includes jazz, tap and modern. At 11, Arcadian was a finalist for the title role in the Broadway musical Billy Elliot. At 13, he made his national television debut on America’s Got Talent finishing in the top 10 and also appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. At 15, Orlando Ballet School Director Mrs. Deidre Miles Burger and the company’s Artistic Director Mr. Robert Hill invited Arcadian to attend the summer program on full scholarship; this lead to a trainee position. Three weeks later, he was promoted to OB2, and a year after that, a full company position. He was the youngest dancer to be hired into the company under Mr. Hill. Arcadian is now a leading dancer performing various roles such as the Virtuoso Nephew in Hill’s hit Vampire’s Ball and principal dancer in Battle of the Sexes, Hollywood En Pointe and Carmina Burana. His resume also includes: Puck in A Midsummer’s Night Dream, Nutcracker prince in The Nutcracker, Hansel in Hansel and Gretel and Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet. The Story of Don Quixote Prologue Having read his fill of romances about knights and chivalry, and driven by the vision of Dulcinea, the tarnished yet inspired Don Quixote begins his adventures with his trusty squire Sancho Panza. Act I, Scene I • A Marketplace in Barcelona Kitri, beautiful daughter of the innkeeper, Lorenzo, is in love with Basilio, the local barber. But much to her chagrin, she learns of her father’s plan to marry her to Gamache, the town nobleman. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza enter the village causing great commotion. Seeing Kitri, Don Quixote wonders if at last he has found his beloved Dulcinea. But at the height of the town celebration, Kitri and Basilio sneak off together, followed by Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Gamache and Lorenzo also attempt to pursue the young couple. Act I, Scene II • A Gypsy Camp Don Quixote and Sancho Panza discover the fleeing couple in a friendly gypsy camp. All are inspired after an evening of enchantment and romance. As the vision of Dulcinea appears to him, Don Quixote realizes Kitri is not his “ideal” but indeed belongs with Basilio. Still caught up in his vision he sees her being attacked by giants, and, spear in hand, he runs to her rescue. Failing miserably he collapses into a deep sleep. Act I, Scene III • The Dream Don Quixote has an enchanted dream of beautiful maidens, their queen and the cupids, in which Kitri appears as his beloved Dulcinea. Act I, Scene IV • Sunrise Lorenzo and Gamache interrupt Don Quixote’s dream. Sympathetic to the cause of the young lovers, Don Quixote attempts to lead Gamache and Lorenzo astray with no success. Act II, Scene I • The Town Square Finally discovered, Kitri is forced by Lorenzo to accept the attentions of Gamache. The thwarted Basilio commits “suicide.” Upon learning of the farce, Kitri implores Don Quixote to persuade Lorenzo to wed her to the “corpse.” Instantly Basilio comes to “life.” Act II, Scene II • The Wedding Don Quixote and Basilio salute Lorenzo and Gamache for accepting the inevitable. The village celebrates the marriage. Don Quixote bids a warm farewell to all and resumes his everlasting adventures with his trusted Sancho Panza.
