Welcome From Our President Dear Friends, Welcome to Naples Ballet’s production of Alice in Wonderland. This is our first year performing this marvelous ballet which has been developed and choreographed by our Artistic Director Christophe Maraval. Countless hours of dedicated work has gone into this production—from new costume and set designs to choreography and score. We hope that you will be as delighted by the performance as we have been seeing it come to life. The Alice in Wonderland story centers upon a capricious young girl transported from the protected land of childhood into a magical dreamscape. She is the heroine who cavorts with the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, flamingos and, quite an exotic caterpillar. Each year, we marvel at our dancers’ ability to tell a story through the art of dance. Months of rehearsals result in this inspired performance that you are about to see. Naples Ballet presents two full-length ballet productions per year: one in the spring and The Nutcracker during the holiday season. We also perform at other venues in town including Naples Botanical Garden and with the Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra at Artis—Naples. Special thanks should be given to our teachers and staff who have been preparing for this production for over four months. Christophe Maraval, our acclaimed Artistic Director, Liliam Gomez, senior instructor, and Charin Leyva, our pre-ballet instructor, assisted in training our students. In addition, our administrative staff of Deirdre Butler-Derby, Valentina Caroca and Victor Blasucci helped on logistics and media coordination and, Jessica Painter with costumes, and recruiting volunteers. I also want to thank our students and their parents for the commitment they have made for rehearsals and support to make this production successful. I would like to thank our contributors for generously supporting us and allowing Naples Ballet to help many families of students who could not otherwise afford our tuition: 12 scholarship students are performing in this production, and we could not be more delighted. We sincerely hope you enjoy our production.

With Warm Regards,

Toshiko Tompkins President/Director

Who We Are Naples Ballet, Inc. is a non-profit ballet company administered by a volunteer Board of Trustees dedicated to setting new standards for artistic excellence. We provide the art of ballet as a component of education. We promote cultural enrichment by creating awareness of the art of dance within the Naples community. Our vision is one of preserving the art of classical ballet and providing opportunities in several areas of community outreach. We mentor our local children in dance education and host special programs such as afterschool ballet classes at the Boys and Girls Club of Collier County. Our collective goal is to deliver an artistic and cultural experience that inspires dancers and audiences alike. The mission of Naples Ballet, Inc., is to provide dancers of all ages with performance opportunities that meet the highest standards of artistic development, instill professional values and qualities through art education and to offer complimentary professional dance instruction through scholarship funding. Our need-based scholarships for ballet training are awarded to dancers through open auditions, and we currently have 18 scholarship students, 12 of whom you’ll see onstage today. We serve as a training ground for recreational dancers, as well as those who are seeking professional careers in dance or related fields, and daily training is essential for our students to be technically prepared. Additionally, weekly rehearsals are necessary to prepare for productions, and dancers dedicate an average of 13 hours per week to their dance studies while maintaining their educational responsibilities. Our dancers are an extraordinary group of young people who have been accepted into prestigious summer programs offered by the American Ballet Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet, Boston Ballet, The HARID Conservatory, Houston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Kirov Academy of Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Orlando Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Patel Conservatory, San Francisco Ballet, Sarasota Ballet and The School of American Ballet. We are very proud of each of them. Funding for Naples Ballet, Inc. is earned through ticket sales, fundraising and charitable contributions. Donations help to fund our endeavors and allow us to connect with other art groups in the community for the purpose of promoting the art of dance in an educational and creative environment.

Artistic Director

Christophe Maraval After nine years as Principal Dancer with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Christophe Maraval retired at the end of the 2007 season to join the faculty at Ecole Superieure de Ballet Contemporain de Montreal. Mr. Maraval has been teaching Vaganova method with French flair and American musicality and energy to all levels of students, and has coached for numerous competitions and performances. Mr. Maraval began his training at the Opera de Paris and the Superior Conservatory of Paris and at age 16 joined the Ballet National de Nancy under Pierre Lacotte. He left after six seasons to work with Nanette Glushak at the Ballet du Capitole in Toulouse, France. It was in Toulouse that Christophe discovered Balanchine and decided to move to America, performing first with the Cincinnati Ballet under the direction of Victoria Morgan and finally with PNB under Kent Stowell, Francia Russell and Peter Boal. During his career, Mr. Maraval danced with various professional ballet companies in the United States and Canada as a Guest Artist including Tulsa Ballet, Oklahoma Ballet and Gala Des Etoiles of Montreal 2004 and 2007. With a vast repertory, some of his favorite ballets are from George Balanchine, William Forsythe, Val Caniparoli, Ben Stevenson, Richard Tanner, Glen Tetley, Jose Limon, Jerome Robins, Ulysses Dove, Kent Stowell and more. Numerous choreographers created ballets for Mr. Maraval such as Kirk Peterson (Amazed in Burning Dreams, Carmen), Paul Gibson (Rush, The Piano Dance) and Dominique Dumais (Scripted in the Body, Time and Other Matter). Christophe’s style is to teach his students method and rigor, instilling a passion for dance in all students. He believes ballet is discipline that will follow you all your life, and Naples Academy of Ballet is a great place to start.

The Story of Alice in Wonderland Act I • Down the Rabbit Hole: On a spring day at the riverbank, Alice is feeling bored and drowsy as she reads a book with no pictures or conversations. While daydreaming, Alice spots a waistcoat-wearing White Rabbit with a pocket watch run past. Alice gives chase and follows him down a rabbit hole, but suddenly falls a long way down to a curious hall with locked doors of all sizes. She finds a key to a door too small for her to fit through but through the keyhole she sees a beautiful garden. She then discovers a bottle labeled “DRINK ME,” the contents of which cause her to shrink too small to reach the door handle. Alice then treats herself to a cookie that says “EAT ME” and grows to such a tremendous size that her head hits the ceiling. • The Pool of Tears: Alice is so unhappy she weeps large tears which flood the room like an ocean. Another drink from the bottle causes Alice to shrink again. As she swims through her tears, she meets numerous strange characters. The sea of tears becomes crowded with other animals and birds that have been swept away by the rising waters. • The Caucus-Race: Alice and the other animals convene on the bank and question how to get dry again. A Dodo decides that the best thing to do is have a Caucus-Race, which consists of everyone running in a circle with no clear winner. While exploring the enchanted forest, Alice is surprised by Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum who drown her in questions about her and if she knows the queen. Finally evading them, she finds herself in a garden of singing flowers who mistake Alice for a weed and chase her off. • Advice from a Caterpillar: Alice comes upon a Caterpillar sitting on a mushroom. The Caterpillar gives Alice a piece of his mushroom to bring her back to her normal size. • Cheshire Cat and a Mad Tea Party: Alice then meets the Cheshire Cat who recommends that she visit the Mad Hatter, March Hare and the Dormouse. Alice becomes a guest at a “mad” tea party, and when the White Rabbit makes another appearance, he invites them all to the Queen’s Croquet Match. Act II • The Queen’s Garden: Alice enters into a garden where the tyrannical Queen of Hearts and her Knave reside. She comes upon living playing cards painting the white roses on a rose tree red because The Queen of Hearts hates white roses. A procession of Hearts and Spades, her new acquaintances, and even the White Rabbit all enter into the garden. Finally, Alice meets the Queen. • Off with Her Head: The Queen, a figure difficult to please, announces her signature phrase “off with his head!” Alice is invited to play a game of croquet with the Queen and the rest of her subjects, but the game quickly descend into chaos. Live Flamingos are used as mallets and hedgehogs as balls, and Alice once again meets the Cheshire Cat who pulls a trick on the Queen, for which she blames Alice. • By the Sea: She escapes from the Queen’s grip with the help of the Knave and ends up by the sea where the Mock Turtle, Griffon and Lobsters try to cheer her up by playing a game and dancing to the Lobster Quadrille. The Queen appears, and Alice is arrested and put on trial. • The Trial: Unfairly judged and convicted, Alice makes it very clear what she really thinks of the Queen. Enraged, the Queen orders her execution. Alice flees and is pursued by the Wonderland characters. Alice awakens brushing what turns out to be some leaves, and not a shower of playing cards from her arm. Alice wonders if this was really a dream.
