Welcome From Our President Dear Friends, Welcome to Naples Ballet’s year-ending production of The Nutcracker. This is our sixth year performing this marvelous seasonal ballet at Gulf Coast High School. The Nutcracker ballet is based on the book The Nutcracker and the Mouse King written by E.T.A. Hoffmann. In 1891, the legendary choreographer Marius Petipa commissioned Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to write the music for The Nutcracker ballet. The first performance was at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia by The Kirov Ballet in 1892, less than one year before Tchaikovsky died at age 53. The Nutcracker was performed in Western Europe in the 1930s and was first performed in America in 1940 by Ballet Russes. It has since become a holiday tradition. It is our philosophy that our students learn not only from intensive lessons but also from performing onstage. Each year we present two ballet productions: The Nutcracker performed in December and another full-length ballet in May, at the end of our school year. We have students performing in this production who are as young as 4 years old and in their first year of dance training. We also have adult students who have been dancing for many years, as well as parents of some of our dancers that are part of our Party Scene cast. In The Nutcracker, we also welcome students from other schools to perform. Special thanks should be given to our teachers and staff who have been preparing for this production for over three months. Christophe Maraval, our acclaimed Artistic Director, choreographed this production. Liliam Gomez, senior instructor and Charin Leyva, our pre-ballet instructor, assisted in training our students. In addition, our administrative staff of Stephanie Pavlik and Bobbie Orban helped on logistics, media coordination, costumes and recruiting volunteers. I also want to thank our students and their parents for their commitment in time and support to make this production successful. I would like to thank our contributors for generously supporting us and allowing Naples Ballet to help many families of students who could not otherwise afford our tuition: nine scholarship students are performing in this season’s Nutcracker. We sincerely hope you enjoy our production. With Warm Regards,
Toshiko Tompkins President/Director
Now is the perfect time to find your home for the holidays!

Who We Are Naples Ballet, Inc. is a non-profit ballet company administered by a volunteer Board of Trustees dedicated to setting new standards for artistic excellence. We provide the art of ballet as a component of education and promote cultural enrichment by creating awareness of the art of dance within the Naples community. Our vision is one of preserving the art of classical ballet and providing opportunities in several areas of community outreach. We mentor our local children in dance education and host special programs such as afterschool ballet classes at the Boys and Girls Club of Collier County. Our collective goal is to deliver an artistic and cultural experience that inspires dancers and audiences alike. The mission of Naples Ballet, Inc., is to provide dancers of all ages with performance opportunities that meet the highest standards of artistic development, instill professional values and qualities through art education and to offer complimentary professional dance instruction through scholarship funding. Our need-based scholarships for ballet training are awarded to dancers through open auditions, and we currently have 14 scholarship students, nine of whom you’ll see onstage today. We serve as a training ground for recreational dancers, as well as those who are seeking professional careers in dance or related fields, and daily training is essential for our students to be technically prepared. Additionally, weekly rehearsals are necessary to prepare for productions, and dancers dedicate an average of 13 hours per week to their dance studies while maintaining their educational responsibilities. Our dancers are an extraordinary group of young people who have been accepted into prestigious summer programs offered by the American Ballet Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet, Boston Ballet, The HARID Conservatory, Houston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Kirov Academy of Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Orlando Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Patel Conservatory, San Francisco Ballet, Sarasota Ballet and The School of American Ballet. We are very proud of each of them. Funding for Naples Ballet, Inc. is earned through ticket sales, fundraising and charitable contributions. Donations help to fund our endeavors and allow us to connect with other arts groups in the community for the purpose of promoting the art of dance in an educational and creative environment.

Christophe Maraval After nine years as Principal Dancer with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Christophe Maraval retired at the end of the 2007 season to join the faculty at Ecole Superieure de Ballet Contemporain de Montreal. Mr. Maraval has been teaching Vaganova method with French flair and American musicality and energy to all levels of students, and has coached for numerous competitions and performances. Mr. Maraval began his training at the Opera de Paris and the Superior Conservatory of Paris and at age 16 joined the Ballet National de Nancy under Pierre Lacotte. He left after six seasons to work with Nanette Glushak at the Ballet du Capitole in Toulouse, France. It was in Toulouse that Christophe discovered Balanchine and decided to move to America, performing first with the Cincinnati Ballet under the direction of Victoria Morgan and finally with PNB under Kent Stowell, Francia Russell and Peter Boal. During his career, Mr. Maraval danced with various professional ballet companies in the United States and Canada as a Guest Artist including Tulsa Ballet, Oklahoma Ballet and Gala Des Etoiles of Montreal 2004 and 2007. With a vast repertory, some of his favorite ballets are from George Balanchine, William Forsythe, Val Caniparoli, Ben Stevenson, Richard Tanner, Glen Tetley, Jose Limon, Jerome Robins, Ulysses Dove, Kent Stowell and more. Numerous choreographers created ballets for Mr. Maraval such as Kirk Peterson (Amazed in Burning Dreams, Carmen), Paul Gibson (Rush, The Piano Dance) and Dominique Dumais (Scripted in the Body, Time and Other Matter). Christophe’s style is to teach his students method and rigor, instilling a passion for dance in all students. He believes ballet is discipline that will follow you all your life, and Naples Academy of Ballet is a great place to start.

The Story of The Nutcracker Act I, Scene I • The Christmas Party The curtain opens inside the house of Herr and Frau Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz. Friends and family have gathered for a holiday celebration. A late arrival is Clara’s godfather, the mysterious, old toymaker, Dr. Drosselmeyer. The children and the adults take turns dancing at the Christmas party. Dr. Drosselmeyer entertains the guests with some magical tricks and makes his life-size mechanical dolls dance for them. After the dolls dance, the children beg for more gifts. He produces a wonderful wooden solider nutcracker for Clara. Enchanted by the nutcracker, Clara dances with it until Fritz snatches it from her and breaks it. Dr. Drosselmeyer mends the nutcracker and returns it to Clara. The party ends, all the guests depart, and the family goes to bed leaving the living room darkened. Act I, Scene II • The Battle Scene The clock strikes midnight, and Clara creeps into the parlor in her nightgown, looking for her nutcracker; which Drosselmeyer magically turns into a life-sized soldier. Then, in a dreamlike fantasy, the familiar drawing room becomes a battlefield for toy soldiers who come to life and an army of mice and rats who are led by their Rat King. Fearful for her beloved Nutcracker, Clara helps him to victory by hitting the Rat King to distract him. The Rat King is defeated and the Soldiers and mice disappear. Act I, Scene III • Journey Through the Snow Forest Drosselmeyer had one last gift. After he transforms the toy Nutcracker into a handsome prince, he sends her into the beautiful snow covered forest where she is greeted by the Snow King and Queen. Enchanted by the snow, Clara joins the swirling snowflakes. Act II After their magical journey through the snow forest, Clara and the Nutcracker Prince arrive at the Kingdom of Sweets. Upon their arrival, they are greeted by the Sugarplum Fairy and all of the inhabitants of the kingdom. As they reenact the night’s events, a celebration for Clara’s bravery and the Nutcracker’s heroism is arranged. Clara is entertained by Chocolate (Spanish dance), Coffee (Arabian dance), Tea (Chinese dance), Mirlitons, Mother Ginger and the Polichinelles, a Russian dance and the Waltz of the Flowers. Then, the Sugarplum Fairy and the Nutcracker dance a grand pas de deux. The evening concludes when everyone comes together in one last dance. Clara wishes the adventure would never end, but her Mother wakes her. Was it all just a beautiful dream?
