It always makes me proud to announce our annual King of the Beach Kingfish and Spanish mackerel tournament. This year’s 21st annual Spring King of the Beach is no different, and yes once again 1st Place will be a guaranteed $20,000 cash prize. With over 50 ways to win! Not to mention last year’s spring event paid out an astounding $120,000. As you have probably already heard through the coconut telegraph or as I like to refer to it “As the Prop Turns” this year’s event has moved to the old Leverock’s property in Madeira Beach. The property is on the south just as you’re heading west over the Madeira Beach Causeway. Did you get those directions? This I promise you; you won’t be able to miss it! This move has been a huge undertaking and we couldn’t have done it without our board of directors, Mr. Holton (the property owner), our members, our sponsors, Hennessy Construction, Cross Construction and the incredible support and relationship that we have with the fine City of Madeira Beach. This location will be our home for the upcoming 102.5 Bone Fishing Slam/ The Baddest on the Bone Barbecue Contest in June and the 21st annual Fall King of the Beach tournament in November. Now I know the question you are all asking... Why the move? That answer may be some of the most exciting news that I have to report yet. We are temporarily at this new location because a new City Hall, Fire Station, Recreation Center, Tournament Ball Fields and most importantly a new Event Field are all being constructed at our previous location. So now on to the festivities! Thursday night, May 1st will be business as usual as we kick off with the largest waterfront Captains party anywhere on the coast. We will have more restaurants, marine vendors, and boat displays than ever before. Friday night, May 2nd the party continues as Mad Beach Food Fest takes off in full swing with the sounds of the Alter Eagles; a renowned Eagles tribute band. And Saturday, May 3rd at 8:00 AM we will kick off with Trophy Takers Outdoors and 102.5 The Bone free kids seawall fishing rodeo and hands-on interactive kid zone. Followed up of course with our live weigh-in and finally the moment that we are all waiting for, who will be crowned the new King. Will it be you? Stay up-to-date by joining us on all of our social media outlets, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and by checking out the Old Salt website at oldsaltfishing.org. Look for additional contingency prizes that are being added on a daily basis. Also you can stay informed instantly by joining our text program by texting the word oldsalt (one word) to number 84700; you will even receive text messages for exclusive offers discounts and more. Now by some remote chance that you can’t join us, and I can’t find a good reason why. Or you have friends and family from out of town; be sure to join us via live streaming. We will be live streaming the weigh in Saturday May 3rd. Just go to the website at oldsaltfishing.org to watch all the action unfold!!! In the meantime support all of our sponsors and be sure to thank our volunteers at the event. Tight lines and calm seas on and off the water. See you there! Tom Verdensky Old Salt President

Welcome all to the beautiful City of Madeira Beach and the 21st anniversary of the Old Salt Fishing Foundation’s King of the Beach fishing tournament. Due to the construction of the city’s new “City Center”, this year’s tournament will be hosted on the old Leverocks Restaurant property located at 565 150th Avenue, just east of the city marina. Good luck to all of you and may you have calm winds and steady seas for the tournament. For those not fishing this prestigious event, there are many reasons to come to the Spring 2014 King of the Beach tournament. There is plenty to do on land with live entertainment, food from our local restaurants and contests for everyone. This year we’re even getting the youth involved with a major kids fishing rodeo on the seawall of the Leverocks property! In addition, there will also be boats on display, fishing gear, crafts, and unique clothing for sale. The Old Salts have made this a very family friendly event, as young and old alike will enjoy the festivities. The City of Madeira Beach is especially proud to host the King of the Beach Kingfish tournament since the Old Salt Fishing Foundation benefits local charities from proceeds from this event and after a temporary displacement, we’ll welcome everyone back to the City Center property next year for this tournament. Will you walk out with the crown this year? We’ll see you in Madeira Beach on May 1st, 2nd and 3rd to see who this year’s King of the Beach will be. Travis Palladeno Mayor of Madeira Beach

Official Beer of the King of the Beach

Don’t Float the Mainstream!

REFLECTIONS OF A ROYAL VICTORY Looking Back on Fall KOB Win By Capt. Bill Miller

With any of life’s pursuits, everyone wants the keys to the castle. Often, that can become a complicated pursuit; but winning the Old Salts King of the Beach tournament actually is a more straightforward objective. It’s certainly not easy, but from personal experience, I can tell you that this royal accomplishment is absolutely attainable. It just takes diligent preparation, commitment to a plan and decisive execution at the moment of truth. That was the story last November when the Miller family fishing team won this prestigious event. For many years, the KOB has been a family tradition that I fish with my wife Debbie, my son Capt. Billy Miller and his wife Ashley. Before I describe how our victory unfolded, let me give you some insight into our preparation. READY TO RUMBLE Long before the tournament, I make 24 leaders with a lead hook and a single treble, 24 leaders with a lead hook and double trebles and assorted leader segments that we can mix and match if we need to modify a leader. Bagging and labeling leaders and parts enables us to quickly identify what we need while fishing. To ensure perfect performance, we have a set of six tournament kingfish rod and reels that we only use in tournaments. (We use a different set for regular charter and fun fishing.) I check all of these tournaments rods, reels and line for any wear and tear or weaknesses that may cost us a fish. Billy and I will load up on live bait a day before the tournament. We’ll catch big scaled sardines and threadfin herring, blue runners and ladyfish and keep them in a big mesh pen overnight. We can always work the sabikis or cast net later if we need more bait, but having a good supply on tournament morning lets us get right to work at daybreak. Boat prep – fuel, oil, etc. – is thoroughly completed at least by the day prior to the event. Bottom line, we make sure we’re ready to capitalize on that all-important first-light bite. Continued page 27

Page 25

EARLY BITE Selecting our fishing spot is a big part of our tournament strategy because weather can greatly affect small boats like our 22-footer. Let’s just say that running to the south end of the Middlegrounds or a deep-water spring is not an option, so we usually remain close to port and find a promising area where the wind isn’t as bad. This close-range plan also allows us to start fishing earlier and the morning of last fall’s KOB, we had all of our lines out and set by 7 a.m. I recall looking at my watch and mentally noting the time. Billy was running the boat and as soon as I looked up to watch the lines, I saw he was struggling to speak through a mouth full of breakfast sandwich. He was frantically pointing at the downrigger. We had a fish on! Debbie picked the rod up and the big fish took off running downwind. Billy turned the boat toward the fish while I cleared the other lines. We got a rod belt on Debbie and Ashley stood behind her for support in the rough water. The big king ripped off a lot of line but we had our Fin-Nor Offshore 20 kingfish reel fully spooled, so there was no real danger of the fish dumping us. After about 10 minutes, Billy got a look at the fish from the tower. He could see it was a nice one, but he couldn’t tell the size. The big smoker came close to gaff range a couple of times, but stayed just out of reach. Billy made a key move by turning the boat slightly and moving the fish to the other side of the boat where I had a better angle. As the fish made its second spiral by the starboard side, I sunk our 8-foot Gene Turner custom gaff right behind his head and it was lights out. In boat lingo “I stoned him in the main brain vein.” TIME FOR PONDERING Ashley had prepared the fish bag with ice and I swung the fish right into the insulated container. After plugging the gaff hole and adding ice we zipped the bag shut and celebrated. So, here we are, shortly after 7 a.m. and we have a huge kingfish on ice. We all had our ideas, but excitement of the moment tends to inflate the estimates so I always guess low to avoid disappointment at the scales. After careful consideration, Billy and I arrived at a 5-pound range for our weight estimates. Confident with our big catch, we put the lines back at and started fishing again. After about 5 minutes we looked at each other and asked “Why are we still out here?” We knew it would be tough to top this big kingfish; plus, Ashly was pregnant with their first child – and my first grandchild. There was no good reason for us to endure any more of this blow, so we reeled in all the baits and headed back to the dock. We reached the dock around 8:30 a.m., cleaned the boat and headed to the house for a nap and lunch. Before tucking ourselves away, we weighed the fish on a scale we carry with us and got a good weight. Billy and I had both guessed low. This was going to be interesting. THE DRAMA BUILDS We knew we had a big fish, but we also knew that fish the size of ours had finished second and even third in years past. Therefore, we approached the weigh-ins excited about the potential of winning, yet mentally and emotionally ready for any outcome. When we reached the weigh-in site, a few of our friends saw our heavy fish bag and asked to peek at our catch. As much as I wanted to share the excitement, I explained that I didn’t want to jinx our chances by prematurely revealing our fish. I told each of them, “I can’t show you, but I have caught and seen a lot of big kingfish in my day and I like the one we have in our bag.” Continued page 33

Well, it seemed like forever before we finally reached the scales, but I realized that our odds grew greater as the weigh-in line grew smaller. Rumors of big fish always keep you guessing, so we really didn’t know what to expect. In the weigh-in line, Capt. Jason Stock said he and his team had a nice one. I knew this accomplished team could produce huge kings, but when they weighed before us, I knew our king was bigger. As we walked up on stage, tournament emcee Tom Verdansky asked me on the microphone how big our fish was and I said about 45 pounds. I could hear a buzz in the crowd as the weigh master put our fish on the scale. It weighed 44.5 pounds and put us in first place. There was about five or six teams behind us yet to weigh and the rumors were flying about a big one still out there. We gathered around a table with a big group of people waiting excitedly to see what would happen. One by one, the remaining fish came and went until all were weighed and the news was final: We won! A MOMENT OF MEMORIES Chuck Weldon, whose Horizon Haze team won an previous KOB title, told me the awards ceremony, the cheering, the lights – whole experience would be surreal. He was right. Considering how many great fishermen have been chasing this crown for so many years, the honor is simply indescribable. When our team was declared the winner, I honestly wasn’t thinking about the first-place prize of $20,000. All I could think was: “This must be how it feels to win the Super Bowl.” Seeing my son, Billy, dressed with the cape and crown and my family up on stage in the smoke and laser light show was a moment I’ll never forget. The vision was so inspiring, I just stood in front of the stage to take in the scene before joining them on stage. Although Billy was crowned King, we all got to wear the crown and cape. There were lots of photos, handshakes, congratulations, well wishes from friends and folks we’d never met. Many thoughts rushed through my mind, but more than anything, I kept thinking: “Is this really happening?” ROYAL REFLECTIONS I think that is what I like best about The King of the Beach. The fun atmosphere and the sportsmanship. There are top-notch professional teams, families and beginners all competing for the grand prize. Everyone respects one another and enjoys the excitement and camaraderie of this weekend-long event. After much celebration, we went back to the Doubletree where we were staying and headed to the Tiki Bar for an adult nightcap. As we walked into the hotel lobby people were clapping and cheering. They didn’t even know what we had done, but the cape and crown must have intrigued them, so they applauded us. Billy and Ashley met Debbie and me for breakfast the next morning and we could not stop reliving those incredible memories from a day earlier. In fact, we still can’t stop talking about it six months later. We still meet people that congratulate us. That is really cool. This is one tournament the Miller family just won’t miss. Next fall, we might even have our granddaughter with us. Look out Youth Division! Capt. Bill’s Media Message: Catch “Fishing with Bill Miller” on World Fishing Network starting April 6 and for tips on a variety of angling topics, check out Capt. Bill’s book “FISH SMARTCATCH MORE!” (http://billmiller.com/fish-smart/)
