Collective Negative Space Village

As an experimental architecture project, "Collective Negative Space Village" explores a brandnew starting point of architecture. If "architecture" is not only a static representation, it should be a link and relationship that can be altered, rewritten, disassembled and assembled at any time. It is alive like the ocean, and we are not only the islanders of the world strung by the sea, but also the sailors involved in interfering and shaping the seas. In order to realize this type of architecture, or at least open the field of thinking and experimentation, we proceed from the core of "education" and use "reversal, subversion, and challenge (negative)" as dynamic energy to find the "airlines (collective)". Further mapping the basic appearance of the "maritime zone (village)". The starting point of the voyage begins with a relationship between TAF/C-Lab and the irrigation river that no longer exist, spreading to the scale changes in the "Taipei Basin", thus imagining the general orientation and role of C-Lab. This project cooperates with the three types of team: "Interdisciplinary Collecting Research", "Proposal Workshop" and "Experimental Architecture Team". It bypasses three sea areas of“Beyond Architecture", "Habitat Matters" and "Cultural Data" through the form of international lectures, workshops, and experimental architecture. To think about a future of architecture that allows various forms and scales of learning, education, and cultivation to take place.

The initial international forum of the project "Collective Negative Space Village" was "Beyond Architecture." The topic provided a three-dimensional discussion which how architecture went beyond the edge of architecture as a physical object. On the formation of architecture, we took it as a switch of heat, air and light within urban environment. The placement of individual building not only forms an internal space, but also affects the collective growth of micro-environment. On the level of architecture production, the development of sciences on one hand reduced the elite production of architecture into events of community participation; on the other hand, it reconsiders the role of architects. At the starting point of architecture, we discussed architectural action, which serves the function as a question, and re-explore the relationship between human and object within the lightness and the heaviness. The second international forum "Habitat Matters" extends the question of existence from architecture to the habitat of living c re a t u re a n d b r i n g s o u t a t h re e f o l d discussion. In terms of concept, it started from the argument of ecosystem theory

that is extended from the context of natural sciences to the discipline of architecture and arts. While concerning environmental planning, based on the cross-disciplinary research on hydrological contexts, species' habitats and temporal vegetation, we explored the way of how the environment naturally develop its landscape, instead of fractural aesthetic transplant. As to the actual action, we aimed to reveal the issues and to form a public collective awareness through sharing and participation. From the topic "Beyond Architecture" to "Habitat Matters," topic of the third forum falls into "Cultural Data," which further focuses and explores the process of how we realize the information of natural and cultural environment. It also reflects the attempt of "Collective Negative Space Village" to connect experimental architecture program with Taipei Basin or even Taiwan Island. In this way, it makes possible for us to reconsider the possibility of Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-Lab), which means to be a laboratory of connectivity and participation that evolved from a laboratory of producibility.

As an experimental architecture project, the radicality of "Collective Negative Space Village" is by no means restricted within the scope of physical space or landscape construction. Hence, the project seeks for the diverse methods including detecting, mining, and data collecting in order to re-read or even re-define the correlation among various issues and objects. And the project will further implement the so-called creation of internal and external relationship. Initially, we get this project straight with "Beyond Architecture," depicting the scenery out of the frame. Then, with "Habitat Matters," we are able to return to the environment, and reconsider the ecological relations among various things. This forum, "Cultural Data," will put an emphasis on "data," in particular the methodology of "datafication," to seek for the practices of redefining the relations among things and movements of forming cultural scenery. Speaking of "data," many people would think of Google searching engine, "big data" that citizen science movement replies on, and the huge influence of "rich data." This means, data are not only some sort of "neutral" information but an important role which drives the open knowledge production and cultural formation. In the era of big data, it urges us to reconsider the simplified analysis of "sampling" and to tolerant "inaccuracy"; moreover, to make use of "correlation" creatively in order to diversely develop the potential possibility of things. Speakers in this forum will share the methodology of data collecting and datafication within their specified disciplines and the "transforming" practices and mobility on the "creation" level. DJ Hatfield currently works as associate professor of History and Anthropology in the Liberal Arts Department of the Berklee College of Music, Boston. He has been devoting himself into the studies of soundscape, media of the indigenous people and ethics of locality; he then turns his researches into his sound art practices. Tsai Pei-Kuei, assistant professor in Graduate Institute of Interdisciplinary Art, National Kaohsiung Normal University, will start from the concept of the project "Popping City" and respond to various issues regarding the aftermath of 2014 Kaohsiung gas explosions through the idea of virtual city and board game. Artist Leeroy New is keen at developing his artistic projects through collaboration. This time, he is going to explain the value of cross-disciplinary data action and take "Bakawan Floating Island Project," initiated by him and the urban planner Julia Nebrija since 2016, as a case study. Besides, artist Wu Tsan-Cheng will dialectically discuss the value of sound recording and his rethinking toward the audio culture, and take "Taiwan Sound Map Project," which he has been working on since 2011, as an example. Finally, Lin Zhi-Yu, the tea maker from "weed day," will elaborate the city collecting as the significance of life-exploring and bringing the data back to the ecological cycle through her collecting research connection practices in the southern area of the city and Toad Mountain. We are not merely living in the era that culture is driven by data, but forwarding to a future which data will be driven by creativity.

DJ Hatfield is Associate Professor of History and Anthropology in the Liberal Arts Department of the Berklee College of Music. A sociocultural anthropologist and sound installation artist, Hatfield's research interests include soundscapes, indigenous media, and what he calls the "ethics of locality" - that is, how place becomes an ethical substance and the kinds of ethical claims place makes upon us. More simply put, in a life marked by movement, Hatfield wants to ask, how do we develop attachments to place or have a sense of home? Hatfield's academic writing includes the book length monograph Taiwanese Pilgrimage to China - Ritual, Complicity, Community (2010) and several articles on Taiwanese popular religious practice, popular music, and indigenous cultural resurgence. In addition to his writing, Hatfield maintains a sound art practice. To Hatfield, sound art IS another modality of ethnographic work, which provides greater breadth to explore cultural conditions and also creates the possibility for greater public engagement. In the image, we present the landscape of Taipei Basin and its clustered environment with four levels: topography, hydrology, roads and villages. It demonstrates a natural, historical and humanistic genealogy reached by the practices of "Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab." The genealogy takes TAF as the geographical starting point, and radially spreads to Keelung Harbor, the Tamsui River estuary, Taoyuan City and its farm pond landscape, Yangming Mountain and the Central Mountain Range. Each poster is designed with four different layers after individual approaches of international forums and proposal workshops. The site of "Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab" would appear at the corner as a reference point echoing to the temporal development of "Collective Negative Space Village." Along with the assemblage of reference points, reading and collecting of the posters will become a cultural experimental action connecting various information that takes Taiwan's contemporary cultural experiments as its core.

puncturing of the body by the sound will reveal one's senses and will also shape and reflect the subjective imagination of the individual.

Sound and the City When you empty your mind, the sounds are able to penetrate your body and raise the possibility to interact with your perception. Regarding the relationship between a city and sounds, particularly the so-called "noises," we tend to insulate the environment against sounds or control sounds. If we look at the Taipei Basin, it is like a sound collector enlarging the sounds in the city and further blurring and fragmenting the sounds. While in such a warm humid climate, with a mixture of various sounds and the changing of people's routes and lifestyle, we need to keep an eye on the phenomenon and situation brought about by the sounds. The concept toward the flow and convenience of information keeps being reshaped, yet the city's structure remains intense. However, it is an interesting imagining process to secure a vacant space in an intense city. In terms of TAF, we need to empty this area to allow the sounds coming in. We empty this base with inaction, and sink all the existing building below the horizon to reflect our imagination and thinking toward the city; thus, we may be able to turn this space into an experiment of sound.

Preview of Experimental Architecture

October 2018 Architecture is always beyond architecture. In the place out of the illustrated paper, try to seek for the path to approach it.

Unfold the thinking and put actual actions in the physical space, you may open the wall and stitch the new border of relationships. We implant a probe-like mass, unfold new dimensions and scatter space in order to prepare a fundamental environment for connecting future events. Instead of current thinking and action of production system, we use body as the measurement and keep the architectural action within the site to continue the dialogue with the environment.
