Cricket World Cup Wow a strait up catch from South Africa! It was Saturday the 7th March. I was at the Cricket World Cup at Eden Park with Simon and Grandad. When we got off the bus we went through Entrance H and then into the stadium. It was massive, there must have been two thousand seats. It was a nine and a half hour game. It was a fifty-fifty. That means each team gets fifty overs. My favourite part was when South Africa’s best batter was out because he hit loads of fours and sixes and at one time he hit three sixes in a row. The final score was 272/220 to Pakistan. My absolute favourite part though was when someone got a four, six or wicket because that was when they set off the flame throwers. Once the game ended we waited for all the pushing to stop. When we got out of the stadium we had to wait in a small queue. Grandad and I got the last seats. Eventually we got to the right stop and waited for our mum to arrive. My thoughts were that it was great but a little too long. By Aidan Alexander

My EOTC Adventure I like climbing rocks. I didn’t make it to the top but I will do it next time! At the beginning of the term I went on an EOTC trip. All the Year five students went so we could learn some new things. I liked kayaking the best because being on the water was fun. I liked putting on the life jackets. The water wasn’t really cold and I liked paddling. I liked archery and I hit an arrow right in the middle. Every colour is a flavour. Strawberry, lemon and blueberry. The white colour is an ice cream cone. If you get the arrow on the grass it is not good because your ice cream is grass flavoured. I liked archery the best because of the ice cream. E.O.T.C I was doing rock climbing because I love rock climbing. We helped each other and it was fun. I was trying my best. I would help my friends and I would try hard. I didn’t reach the top. I had time to do something else. I tried my best. I did it. I was happy. But I was a little bit scared. It was a bit too high for me. I tried my best without ropes. It was easy. I tried my best again. I loved it when I tried to do rock climbing because I took a deep breath and I did it. Next we did Archery. It was challenging. I got my arrow close to the target. It was fine. Finally we played some games. By Connie

30 March 2015 W.A.L.T Write a factual Recount My Camp I finally went in. A shiver ran up my spine. I had never experienced anything so cold. Last week the year six students went to camp. The entire year six except for Keshava went, accompanied by some parents and teachers. We went because that’s what we do to celebrate the last year of primary. First we arrived and set up our bunks. My room had Alex, Marco and Phoenix. Straight away we noticed that the room smelt of puke. Eventually we found out it was Marco’s duvet. After about half an hour we went to lion rock for lunch. Most people thought it was much too hot to go. After we got back we went swimming it was very refreshing. At about six we had dinner (personally I didn’t like it). Later that week we went to Kitekite-falls and had a swim in the freezing cold water then had lunch (don’t tell the parents how awful the lunches were). When we got back we worked on our Dam. Apparently we built the biggest Damn (I bet Mrs Mulcahy says that every year) Later we cooked marshmallows. I set mine on fire so I didn’t have to wait so long. The last thing I’m going to tell you about is the sandcastle competition they were all amazing (except Mr A’s crocodile. I don’t even think that counts as a sandcastle since it’s a crocodile) I did the Ruins of Elf with Hamish home to the Elfians not to be confused with Santa’s Elves. Camp was great and I would love to go back. By David Ette

The Best Camp Ever “Water fight!” someone yelled. “Ok,” I replied. To the water hole I rushed. I was hit by a big blast of freezing water. Burrrr it’s cold! Time for a water fight! I squirted Mr B, and everyone else. It was spectacular. Our camp is at Piha Mill Camp. I am David Stothers and I was there with all of the year six students from Chelsea School. It was time for boat building. We had twenty minutes to build a boat and test it. Then it was time to sail our boat. Mine came third. The next day we had a camp fire and roasted marshmallows. I had four. Delicious! I loved camp and I wish I could go again. It was just truly EPIC!

The Week of Fun My hands felt sweaty. Was I going to make it? I looked up. Long way to the top. I looked down. It looked like a bottomless canyon. I’m gonna fall, I’m gonna fall! In Week Two, after the year sixes went off to camp, the year fives Outdoor Education Week started. This was a fun-filled week with trips to places and activities at school. The sun was shining (most of the time) and the teachers were happy ( most of the time ). The first thing we did was on Monday. We built bivouacs in the bush! Once we got our teams, we looked for the ideal place for the hut. Eventually we found it. After we finished putting up the tarpaulin, we had morning tea. Later, Mr Kateley told us to make beds. My bed was a piece of wood. It was quite uncomfortable, but it did count as a bed! Finally it was Friday. Everyone was waiting for this particular day. Rock Climbing, Archery, Kayaking. Once we got off the bus, we looked around. ‘North Shore Birkenhead Leisure Centre’ the sign said. Our first activity was Rock Climbing. After that came Archery. It was my turn. I went up to the shooting zone and loaded my bow. I closed one eye and blocked out everybody else. I heard a voice. “Sinker! Wot ut!” then I heard it again, this time more clearly “SPRINKLER!! WATCH OUT!” I ducked just in time. The water went shooting over my head. Drip! A water drop landed on my nose. It wasn’t a sprinkler. It was……… rain? Drip! Drop! Drip! I shot and collected my arrows when I was told to. After that I ran under a tree for cover. After lunch was our last activity. It was Kayaking. It wasn’t that boring, but I better not waste pen ink writing about it. When we got back to school, I felt tired, but good. EOTC. Sure, it was fun, but at the end of the week, all I wished for was a relaxing weekend.

Skateboarding I was so excited. I went crazy. I hopped on the Skateboard. I was scared but I got used to it. It was fun. I learned a lot of new things. I had to wear a skateboard suit. I was wondering, ‘How do I control it easily?’ You had to lean back on the skateboard or lean forward. Suddenly the wind blew my skateboard into a ditch. I got back up. Sadly the skateboarding was over but I still had fun. By Film

31st March WALT: Write a Factual Recount Awesome Year Six Camp!!! I tucked inside my sleeping bag and laid my head on my pillow. Suddenly I felt eye drops in my eye. It was my family that I needed…. In Week three the Year 6 students went to Piha Mill Camp. Each year the Year Six students get to go on camp because it is their last year at Primary School. After we got there we packed our daypack for climbing Lion Rock. It was really hot because it was a long way to Lion Rock but that wasn’t even the start because you had to climb the rock. When we got there we had our lunch. After we ate our lunch we came down from the Lion Roc. We came back to our camp site. Eventually we came back. Dasha and I thought a swim at the waterhole might be nice after a long walk. The water hole was freezing cold but I still liked it. It seemed like Dasha didn’t like though. After a bit we came out. The next evening was the Burma trail. You had to get in groups of seven people and put a blindfold around your eyes. You go into the bush and hold a rope and you keep following the rope in the darkness. When it was my group’s turn I was as excited as I was nervous. I wanted to see how scary it would be. When it was time to start I heard lots of screaming behind me. I nearly fell at one place. I was hanging onto the rope. When it was finished our hands were icky because in the middle there was jammy kind of thing on the rope. On that night when everybody was asleep I started crying a little bit because I wanted to see my family. Dasha noticed that I was crying so she told me to stop crying. And then suddenly I heard somebody crying. It was Dasha!!! “Dasha are you crying!” I asked very surprised. In the end we patted each other on the head. We fell asleep nearly on the same time……. Year Six Camp was awesome but it was hard time for me because I was homesick of all of these food and stuff we did and most of all where and when and how we slept. By Ga-Yeon

E.O.T.C As I walk up to the activity I knew I was gonna be bad at it. After the Year Six students went to camp the Year Five students had Outdoor Education. It was week two. On Friday everyone was excited to go to Birkenhead leisure Centre to do archery, kayaking and rock climbing. When we got there we went in a building next to a high rope. Not that far was a pool. After we put our bags away we met four people (I can't remember all of them) The first activity I did was rock climbing. After a half hour at that we did archery. We learnt how to load a bow and how to shoot it. When it was my turn I didn’t get any on the board. When it was my turn again I got two on the target and one on the grass. When it was my turn again I shot my second arrow. I heard some words. It was “SPRINKLER!” I shot my arrow and ducked. I still got wet a bit but hey that’s ok. A bit later we had lunch. We went Kayaking so we got changed and learnt the basics. We got in the kayaks and did a race to go back and forth. After the race we did something called raft up. Raft up is when you hold each-others raft and stay like that. After an hour of kayaking. We went back to the building and thanked everyone. We went back to the bus and then back to Chelsea. I’m looking forward to a good cool weekend. By KiYong

Sweet and Scary Fun As we entered the flame lit clearing, sticks in hand, a wave of excitement came over us. The sweet smell washed over me like a scent wave. Hunger burbled inside my stomach though we had just had dinner. I couldn’t wait! When we sat down on the cold, hard benches, I thought of how we came to Piha Mill camp. We were in the campfire area, waiting for our first squishy treat. The sky had just darkened. All the year six students were there. Everyone was really hyped up BEFORE the sugar fest! As the marshmallow squished into my hand, a strong scent of sugar washed over my face. My stomach groaned for me to just stuff it in my mouth. We all surged forward to get close to the fire. I stuck my marshmallow into the flames. I quickly took it out. It had just started to bubble in a delicious looking way. YUM! After the sugar rush we went inside to get ready for‌ THE BURMA TRAIL!!!

Before camp I didn’t know what the Burma trail was but I knew it was going to be awesome! As Mr A called our group up fear clutched hold of me though I knew there was nothing to be afraid of……..or was there? As we tramped over the rickety bridge, blindfolds on, heavy breathing could be heard right along the track. Distant screams made us scream as well as water being squirted and teachers and parents scaring us. The dark blackness folded out forever. Between jump scares, water squirts, apricot jam and a LOT of screaming, that was the scariest night of my life. BY LAUREN GIBSON

The Best Camp I couldn’t see, water was in my eyes, I was freezing cold and the next second a blast of water got me in the face. I was shaking with fear. I wiped my eyes then I saw a gigantic blast of water come straight at me‌ The year six students were at Piha Mill camp. Every year the year six students go to camp and this time it was our turn. Camp was from the 15th of February to the 20th February. It was the second day in the afternoon and it was burning hot. Everyone was down at the waterhole having a nice restful swim, but then me and some others ambushed them with water guns. They were so annoyed. They went out and grabbed their own water guns. We had this massive water fight. After that we got out, had a yummy dinner and we toasted marshmallows. My first marshmallow was really burnt but I ate it anyway. My second marshmallow was ok and I ate it. My third one was cooked to perfection. Unfortunately my last one fell in the fire. Soon we went back to the dining room and we made our camp T-shirt. Mine was the only one with a water gun on it. Finally we went on a Burma trail. It was fun (well for me) and scary (for others). Camp was one of the best weeks of my life because it was so challenging!!!!

Dead on Target! I let go of the bowstring. “Bull’s eye” I yelled. “Bulls eye!” The second week of school was EOTC. The Year Five students went to the Botanical Garden, we went skating and we visited the Leisure Centre. The first thing we did was skating. That was fun. Then we did army training. That was my favourite. You got to build a shelter and we had our morning tea in the hut. Next we had lunch. That was quite short for a lunch. After that was the treasure hunt. We had to find really random stuff like: something yellow, a golden nugget, a feather, something plastic and lots of things like that. Finally it was home time and by the end of the day everyone was puffed out and tired. I had a great day and we all needed a good night sleep.

The Burma Trail I couldn’t see anything, my hands felt sticky goo. The sound of screaming filled the air. What’s happening? Everyone gathered in the dining room at Piha Mill Camp. Every year, the Year Six students would go there for five days. OMG! Everyone was so het up that it looked like their heads would explode from excitedness! The dining room was crowded; full of excited kids waiting to go on the annual Burma Trail, with no knowledge of what was going to happen. Maybe we were meant to find treasures??? I was in Group Two: The ‘I’m not that confident, but I can manage’ group. Mr Anderson came in. “Group Two, it’s your turn!!” he called. I waved goodbye to my friends. Going down the hallway a rush of excitement tingled down my spine. Yes! Finally my time to go on the Burma Trail has come, I thought. Mr Anderson settled us down in the lounge. “Get into groups of five or six,” he instructed. I joined Shelly and her friends. As the parents blindfolded us, we all got suddenly worried, and all the excitement seemed to have blown away. We can do this, we can do this, I repeated in my head. We all stood in a line grasping onto the shoulders of the person in front. I held onto Shelly. Whew! Glad I’m not in front, I thought. I suddenly heard the crunching of leaves as we entered the bush. An adult placed my hands onto a thick rope. Where are we going??? I wondered. My hands felt horribly sticky jam on the rope I was holding. “Oww! Tree in the way!” cried Shelly. I snickered quietly. No one else was

laughing, I bet they were too terrified. I was walking slowly in case I hit a tree, like Shelly. “la la la la la, this is awesome!!!!!!!” I thought, all of the kids were way back far away in the bush. I heard some kids wanting to take their blindfolds off “Scaredy cats!” All of the tree leaves were rustling loudly as if big giant feet were stomping on them. I was boiling in my jumper. I was wanting so badly to take it off. “Ahhhhh!!!” Kids started to scream. “Eww, mud!” someone shouted. I didn’t really care, at least we were happy! Well, some of us. Finally, we came out. All of the girls were glad. I took my blindfold off and stared at my sticky hands, it was covered in jam and tree bits. I went to the bathroom. We were lining up eagerly wanting to wash our hands. They took so long!!!! I went into the dining room hall with my clean hands. “Group Three!” That was Stina, Ga-yeon and Dasha’s turn. I personally think that that was the best time in my life, because it was awesome!!!!!!!!

Stepping Into the Darkness Disorientated I reach and feel for the rope. My hand slips into some oozy, sappy stuff. Something rustles my hair. “What was that?” Last week the Year Six students (and some parents and teachers) all went to camp to celebrate the last year at school. It was awesome! Michelle, Poppy, Noah and I were in the Burma trail not knowing where we were going, and I was the only thing stopping us from getting lost. As I walked something wet sprayed me, I got distracted and walk straight into a tree. “Ouch! Now I’ve lost the rope!” I complained. Then I whispered to Poppy “Where’s the rope?” She replied. “It’s over here” Suddenly I heard Noah get the fright of his life “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRR.” He screamed. It was hilarious. Rustle, rustle, trip. It was then that I realised it was all parents and teachers. It was late at night so we all went to bed. It was AWESOME!!!

EOTC Week There I was climbing until I got to the top and stopped. The instructor was talking while all the climbers were holding on but I was slipping. My fingers and feet were sweating. I was so scared. I thought I was going to fall. It was EOTC week and we were at Birkenhead Leisure Centre. We were there because it is a great experience. All the Year Five’s went and we travelled there by bus. One of the first things we did when we got there was archery. We got into groups of four. After listening to a tutorial we tried a few shots. I was terrible. Next we played the ice-cream game. I hit the blue, black and white part of the target so I got a blueberry and chocolate ice-cream in a cone (the ice-cream was pretend). Next we went kayaking, it was a disaster for me. I kept banging, bumping and wedging into boats and walls. Moments later we were getting changed and walking back to the room that had our bags. I liked EOTC week because it was very educational, active plus fun. My favourite day of that week was every day. The experiences I had blew my mind. I never thought I would be able to skateboard. That was one of my favourite weeks.

The Trail Darkness. Darkness was all I saw. I sensed that the moon was high in the sky, and felt envious of the people tucked up in bed back at civilisation. I heard the crickets, their chirps far and distant. I heard the crunching of leaves under feet. Suddenly someone grabbed my hands and moved them steadily onto a thick rope. I heard a man whisper in my ear, “Whatever you do, don’t let go of the rope.” He warned. I sensed his presence leave. That’s when I heard the first scream. On the third night of camp, my friends and I were sitting in the cold dining room, awaiting to be called for the Burma Trail. Fear had wrapped itself around my heart like cold metal since they announced what the Burma Trail was. It was a scary trudge through the dark and abandoned woods, at night. Five minutes later, a booming voice filled the chamber. “Group Three, follow me…. if you dare…” With that Mr A turned and walked down the dark hallway, expecting us to follow. First off we were lead down a dark hallway, we then entered a room that was so well lit, I was forced to squint till my eyes adjusted. I watched curiously as Mr A, removed a lid off a small plastic box. He pulled out a couple of long pieces of material. Next he handed half of the pieces of material to Dr Stacy. I watched as Mr A leant over and whispered something in her ear, curious to find out what he said, I kept staring. Dr Stacy nodded and gestured for us to come forward. After everyone had slowly approached her, she ushered us into a line. “I’m gonna tie these strands of material.” She held up the hand with the material in it. “And I’m going to tie them around your eyes to act as blindfolds.” While everyone was having their blindfold placed over their eyes I stared out the door. The moon shone down illuminating the camp site. I glanced back at Lauren, and gave her a reassuring smile, knowing that she wasn’t fond of scary and creepy things, so I figured she was a bit nervous for the trail. After everyone had their own blindfold, Dr Stacy moved us into a line. We placed our hands on the person in front of us shoulders. I clasped Tori’s shoulders so tight, scared she would disappear and I would be lost and wander endlessly wondering how to

get back to camp. Tori grumbled something and I relaxed my grasp. Before I knew what was happening, the line started to move forward. Finally the line came to a halt. I could tell that we were in the woods. After a lot of moving around and people yelling at Mr A telling him not to scare us and lots of people threatening the teachers, we started to move. After a few people slipping and falling, we finally got a steady pace. I heard Emelia grumble in front of me. (Tori had been taken out.) “TREE!” Emelia shouted back. Carefully, I avoided the tree. Slowly we made our way through the Burma Trail. That’s when I heard it. “Turn back…” A gruff voice warned “Great” I thought. “They ARE going to scare us.” Minutes past. Screams filled my ears the whole way through. Jump scares happened. Finally we reached the end of the trail. I removed my blindfold and growled at Mr Christie when I saw him. “They’ll get it” I thought “they’ll get it big time.” I enjoyed camp soooooo much and will always treasure the experience!

The Quest to Conquer Lion Rock I trudged on in the heat. My eyes hurt from squinting, and sweat was dripping down my neck like a waterfall. “I don’t think I can make it,” I thought. “I just can’t make it.” It’s camp. All the year six students only had time to unpack and have morning tea before we set off on a tiring walk, all the way up Lion Rock. To start off with, it took like forever going down Glenesk Rd. It took another age to get to our first street, which we crossed, and then changed direction. We wandered through a handful of paths, took a shortcut through a campsite, all the time acting like a human river of sweat. We got back onto the road, and finally ended up on the beach. If we looked hard enough, all along the coast we could spot heat waves rising from the sand. We had a short break, but being out in the sun for longer wasn’t helping. Eventually we were released up the track, up to the grassy ledge where we would have lunch. We all found it hard to scale Lion Rock while feeling like French Fries, but we all did it somehow. At last we could eat. I had a yummy meal, but it had gone all dry from sitting in my burning hot bag for so long. The water was also a disappointment. I was so longing for a trip to the water hole. We began our descent down Lion Rock. I was certain we would be baked alive! But something in my head told me to keep going, so that’s what I did. I was so tired, but I had to keep going. The image of a refreshing swim stayed in my mind. After what seemed like years, I found myself entering the campsite. ‘Hooray!!!!!’ I was screaming inside my head. I couldn’t believe what I’d done. My EOTC Experience On Monday week three the year six students went to camp and the year five students were at E.O.T.C. We went on the bus to the Leisure Centre to do some fun things. First our group went to kayaking. I love going kayaking because it is a fun thing to do. Next I went rock climbing. I loved it so much. I went all the way to the top in the small place. We went down stairs to go to the highest rock climbing wall and made it to half way up. It was not that bad. When our time was up it started raining. I waited a little while and I ran to the class room to eat my morning tea. After lunch I went to my favourite activity of all, archery. It was the best thing to do. You had to shoot the arrow at the middle of the target. The first one I did went right in the middle and the next one did not go in the middle but it was on red. When it was done it was time to hit the castle. After the castle we said Good Bye to the leisure staff and the parents who helped. We travelled back to school and then went home.

EOTC I was walking to our next activity. I was nervous “GULP.” I saw the next activity. “Oh no.” I said. I was shaking with fear. Two weeks ago the year five students at Chelsea school had EOTC week. We were learning lots of new like skateboarding and rockclimbing. First of all we had to sit on the boiling hot ground. The sun was shining in my eyes. It was the hottest day of my life. Time to put your gear on. “Ahhhhhhhh.” I sighed with relief. We got it. Skateboarding. We put our gear on and we got into it. Skateboarding looked so hard but it looked fun. For practice we had to skate from one side of the court to the other side of the court. “Oh no!” I fell off. “Whew.” At least I had my helmet on. At the end of the session it did finally end. I walked up to the line, I pulled the string back. Bull’s eye! As soon as my arrow hit it poured down with rain. We had lunch and we had to go home. I thought this was the coolest experience of EOTC.
