Anteaters There are several different types of Anteaters such as the Giant Anteater and the Silky Anteater but the Giant Anteater is the best known. Anteaters live in South America and Central America. Anteaters are large and hairy. They have sharp claws that can rip through termite mounds. The Giant Anteater can grow as long as seven feet from the tip of the tongue to the end of its tail. The Slinky Anteater can be as small as a squirrel. An Anteaters tongue can be two feet long. Anteaters have a poor sense of sight so to make up for that they have an amazing sense of smell. Their ability to smell is forty times better than ours. Anteaters live up to fifteen years in the wild and up to twenty five years in captivity. Anteaters are very tough. The reason why they have fur is to protect themselves from the sun. An Anteaters diet is made up of ants and termites. By Aidan

Ragdoll Cross Tiffany Cats The Ragdoll cross Tiffany cat is a special designer breed and a talented cat. The Ragdoll cross Tiffany cat is different to a normal cat. Ragdoll cross Tiffany cats have three layers of fur to keep them warm during winter. During summer the Ragdoll cross Tiffany cat will drop a lot of fur. The Ragdoll cross Tiffany cat can be different colours but the main colours are black, white, smokey-grey and golden brown. You can find these cats in every country and the S.P.C.A, but you can mainly find them in countries with a cold climate. The Ragdoll cross Tiffany cat loves to eat more than a normal cat. The Ragdoll cross Tiffany cat eats until they can’t walk. I think the Ragdoll cross Tiffany cat is a perfect cat to have because they are indoor cats so they don’t go outside. They love to be cuddled and they eat a lot, and they are playful felines. By Alisha

Golden Eagles Golden Eagles use great speed to catch their prey. They catch their prey with their talons. Golden Eagles eat pests so their main diet is rabbits, marmots, and ground squirrels. The Golden Eagle’s hunting skill depends on the weather. Snow or heavy rain can make it difficult for the Eagles to hunt. Did you know that the Golden Eagle nests in high places such as cliffs and trees? (Imagine the view!)They build huge nests so they can return for several breeding years. Females can lay up to four eggs, and the parents keep them warm to 40-45 days. Most of the time only one or two survives. Some of the Golden Eagles migrate but some don’t it depends on their location. Golden Eagles that live in Alaska and Canada fly south in autumn and the Golden Eagles in the western continent like the U.S tend to remain in their ranges year-round. In conclusion I would find it very different to be a Golden Eagle because they have a different life cycle to humans. By Ashleigh

The Killer Whale Killer Whales are the largest warm blooded predator alive today. The Killer Whale is also known as the Orca. The Killer Whale is found everywhere from the Arctic and Antarctic regions to the tropical seas. Killer Whales rely on sound to navigate and find their food in the dark ocean. Sound waves travel through the water at the speed of about 1.5 km/sec (0.9 millisecond), which is four-and-a-half times as fast as sound traveling through air. Some Killer Whales have different diets depending on where they live. Killer whales are known to eat leatherback sea turtles, dugongs, moose, penguins and other seabirds. I would hate to come across a killer whale. By Ashleigh

The Elephant Elephants are the largest land living mammals in the world. You can find elephants in many zoos but there are only three species the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant. An adult elephant has only one enemy. It’s the humans. Why? For many years the elephants were killed for their tusks. But now this is against the law. The elephants are still in danger. The African elephants are slightly larger than the Asian elephants. The height of the African elephant is three and a half metres to the shoulder. The height of the Asian elephant is two and three quarter metres to the shoulder. The African elephants weighs up to six tonnes and the Asian elephant weighs five and a half tonnes. Fencing Fencing, it’s an open sport where you use swords and attempt to hit your opponent. There are three different types of swords. The Foil, Epee and Sabre. With different swords you have a different target area. With the Foil you can only aim for the chest and the back. With the Epee you can aim for all of the body including the head. Finally, with the Sabre you can aim for the hips up. When you fence you need armour. If you don't it can be quite dangerous and you could get hurt. The gear that you need includes a chest protector. You have to wear a jacket and the zip on the jacket is on the back. Then you add a glove onto the hand that you hold your sword in. Fencing is a big sport and to play you need a lot of talent and skill. In conclusion fencing is a cool sport to try and an awesome sport to play.

My Cat Gingy Do you have a cat? No? Shame on you. Cats are intelligent and social mammals who are usually friendly. Cats were believed to be domesticated in Egypt around 6,000 BC but recent studies showed that cats were in fact first pets in Middle Asia in 8,000 BC. Cats are mammals who have sleek posture and slim legs. Fur covers around ninetysix percent of their bodies and their average lifespan is fifteen years. That’s actually only around fifty years in human age, but consider the everyday dangers for them. I have a cat called Ginger, but I like to call him Gingy. Gingy is quite a special cat. He is very smart and could open the sliding door in our living room from last year. He loves sleeping on sewing boxes, bean bags, christmas hats and my bed, which is very sad because he is banned from there because his fleas are torturing everyone. Gingy has a favourite hobby. It’s taking revenge and biting people’s ankles. Last time my mum didn’t give him food before 8.00am and he bit everyone’s ankles until he got food. I also remember him sleeping on the fresh clothes that had just come out of the washing machine, and sleeping in my dad’s sock drawer. It was hilarious. In conclusion Gingy is the best pet anyone could have, and when he dies I’ll cry forever. By Emi

Rugby report Rugby is New Zealand's favourite sport. It is played all around New Zealand and all over the world. There are many types of rugby like touch rugby, rippa rugby, rugby union, rugby league and much more. The key to rugby is practice. There are fifteen different positions in rugby. They are split into two groups called the forwards and backs. The forwards are generally larger than the smaller more agile backs. Position number one is the loose head prop. Number two is the hooker. Number 3 is the tighthead prop. Number four and five are the locks. Positions 6, 7 and 8 are referred to as loos forwards. Number nine is the halfback and number 10 is the first five eighth. Number 11 is the left winger and number 14 is the right winger. 12 and 13 are the centres while number 15 is the fullback. The rugby field is one hundred metres long from under. The field is an H shaped rugby post that is 3 meters up and 5.6 meters across. In line with the post is the try line and behind is the in goal area. Behind that is ‘dead.’ In the middle of the field is a half way line. From the post and twenty two meters out is the twenty two line where most of the conversions are taken after a try. Eighteen meters out is the forty meter line. By Harry

Owls Have you ever seen one of those horror movies where a haunted mansion looms high above two extremely scared main characters? Have you ever heard a loud screech and then “What was that?” from the two hilariously dumb characters? Well I have, and I know that is inaccurate. Owls are adorable and extremely loving creatures. They may have a horror movie screech but they have befriended many people including me.
There are many species of owl. From the Snowy Owl to the Eagle Owl, right down to the tiny Elf Owl. There are many climates that owls live in too. You can find the Snowy Owl in the snow, and the Elf Owl inside a cactus in the hot American deserts. Owls live all over the world. Our native owl is the Morepork. You can also find the Morepork in Australia, though they call it the Boobook there. You can most commonly find owls in Europe and England. They usually live in forests or bush, though you can find them in birds of prey centres.
Owls can glide silently for a very long time with only one or two flaps of the wings. They have an amazing sense of hearing which they use to catch mice, voles, small birds and insects. A newly hatched owlet eats 2-4 mice or voles per day. A three week old owlet will eat 5-10 mice per day! Isn’t that amazing!
Owls come in many shapes and sizes. The smallest owl in the world is the Elf Owl, approximately the size of my hand. Owls have such a large range of colours and patterns. The Tawny Owl is two shades of brown with a little black and white around the eye areas. Most owls are brown but some owls (like the Snowy Owl) are white based. The Eagle Owl is 4-5 shades of brown with little flecks of caramel. In conclusion Owls are beautiful creatures. They are incredibly intelligent species. If you meet one you will fall in love with it, I should know. By Lauren

Poison Dart Frogs Poison dart frogs are small amphibians. There are over one hundred species of poison dart frog. They breed in moist places like leaves and roots. They are very colourful to warn other animals of its deadliness. Some poison dart frogs contain enough poison to kill ten humans. If you touched a poison dart frog you would be lucky to survive. Of over one hundred species of these frogs only four have been used for tips of poison darts also giving them the “dart” part of their name. You find these nicely coloured amphibians in most tropical rainforests. They are NOT I repeat NOT a pet you would want in your house even if it happens to be cute and pink. Some poison dart frogs are only ten centimetres these are the most deadly poison dart frogs. They are also very agile and fast giving them the “dart” part of their name. I like poison dart frogs. They are awesome but I want to know if you like them. I hope I have told you enough about these poisonous dart poison givers. By Matthew

My Favourite Game There are many video games and we have no way of finding out which is the best with everyone having favourites. Today I want to talk about my favourite video game. The game I want to talk about is called FTL or ‘Faster than Light.’ This game has a massive variety of space ships and layouts of which I have five in total. You have to travel around the sector collecting scrap, getting upgrades and destroying enemy ships before they destroy you. You also have to progress to the next sector before the pursuing rebel fleet can catch up to you. There are also lots of alien races. There are the ‘Engi’ who are cyborg-like beings and ‘Zoltan’ who are powerful and true. There are ‘Rockmen’ who don’t take kindly to other races trespassing in their space and ‘Crystalmen’ the lost race. There are the ‘Lanius’, a race that does not need oxygen and actually drain the oxygen from the room they occupy. There are the ‘Mantis’, a war loving species and then there is the Humans who are pretty self-explanatory. In this game there is a last boss in a war filled final sector. You have to destroy the rebel flagship by jumping to a repair station and going back to the flagship to inflict damage to it. This is my favourite game and I suggest it to you for a great game to play when you’re bored. I will leave you with a picture. By Matthew

There are five different types of tigers. My personal favourite is the Bengal tiger. Tigers like to live in damp places like the Amazon as they are the only sort of cat that likes water (apart from the jaguar). You can also find them in the zoo. Tigers can do lots of things like drag an animal that is bigger than itself to a safe spot to have dinner. They kill it by using their sharp claws and stealth. Tigers can also survive a bullet. Cheetahs are the fastest land animal in the world. When the Cheetah is running at a fast pace it will get so hot it can only run for a limited amount of time and it takes thirty minutes for it to cool down. After giving birth the cubs can’t open their eyes so they are blind and they can’t walk for three to four months. During that process the mother will change the hiding spot every couple of days. Once the cubs can walk they will join in with their mother on hunting trips sometimes the mother will not kill and she let the cubs do the killing. There is only one species, or type of Cheetah but there are small differences between Cheetah living in different parts of the world. My personal favourite is the king Cheetah it has large big black blotches rather than spots like the desert Cheetah. The Terror of the sea Great white sharks are fish not mammals unlike dolphins and whales. They are almost on the top of the food chain as they eat pretty much anything. You can commonly find them in Australia, America, Africa and some other places too. Great white sharks are a light grey with a white underside of their stomach. Their nose points upwards and their body gets slimmer towards their tail. Great white sharks have rows and rows of razor sharp teeth (in case some fall out) for ripping their prey to shreds. Obviously they are built for speed and deadlines. They have seven gills and their tail goes side to side instead of up and down. Great white sharks have an amazing sense of smell and can smell blood from over one kilometre away yet have terrible eye sight so they rely on their nose instead. Great white sharks can range from a one metre baby to a huge three metre adult. All though great whites are vicious predators if they get into a fight with a pod of dolphins the dolphins always win. Great whites can swim over fifty kilometres an hour. In conclusion great white sharks are the king of the sea and definitely a worthy predator.

17.6.15 WALT: Write a report. German Shepherds German Shepherds are mammals since they give birth to their young and give milk to their babies. German Shepherds are loyal and smart dogs. German Shepherd fur comes in a variety of colours. The most common colourings are tan and black or red and black. A Shepherd's ordinary height for males is 60-65cm and for females it is 55-60cm. The ordinary weight for males is 30-40 kilograms and a female’s weight is 22-32 kilograms. You can find German Shepherds in many places like Germany, New Zealand, United Kingdom, America, and throughout the world. You can also find them in homes, police stations, and at the organisation S.P.C.A. German Shepherds can be used as police dogs, mobility/assistance dogs, guard dogs, and pets. One thousand German Shepherds have been used in the military. This species of dogs can only see black and white like most dogs so they trust their noses most of the time.
German Shepherds have an amazing sense of smell. They were used as messengers, rescue dogs and personnel guard dogs in World War II. These dogs are one of the most widely used in breeds in a wide variety of scent-work roles. In 1921 the German Shepherd ‘Strongheart’ became one of the earliest canine film stars, and was followed in 1922 by ‘Rin Tin Tin,’ who was and is considered the most famous German Shepherd. Border Collies Have you ever seen a Border Collie? Maybe just wandering the streets of Auckland? Or running down the sandy beaches of Waiheke? If you have or haven’t, here are a few interesting facts about this beautiful herding breed. Collies are mammals. Most Collies coats are gold and brown, or white and brown. But a Border Collie’s fur is specifically black and white. Because of this it’s easy to pick them out of the crowd. An adult male normally weighs about 16kgs to 23kgs. Adult females don’t grow as large as the male, making them only 12kgs to 16kgs. Because Border Collies, like most dogs, can only see in black and white, they rely on their keen sense of smell. Their nose is extremely useful when herding different animal breeds, because each animal has a different scent, making it easier to herd them in to the correct pen. Border Collies originated in Scotland and England in the 19th century. You commonly find them in farms in hot climates, such as Texas in America and Waiheke in New Zealand. Border Collies aren’t usually house pets, but when they are, they need as much daily exercise as possible. You don’t commonly find them in pet shops, because of the containment. Because of their exercise needs pet shops are bad for them. But places like the S.P.C.A organisation, have the power to fulfil their needs.
Border Collies were bred specifically for obedience and loyalty, thus making them easy to train to perfection. Even though they are naturally a herding breed, they are an alert and intelligent breed, making them magnificent at being a guard dog. Though when they are a guard dog, they don’t live up to their true nature, which is to run freely and herd. In conclusion, they are confident animals that are loyal to their owners. They make great working dogs, but also a loving family pet. By Skye

Writing a Book Writing a book takes time, ideas, paper, and most of the time you end up staring at the wall. That’s perfectly normal though. It happens to every good writer. If you want to write a book, put a note pad in your pocket, a pencil behind your ear and do exactly that. Any writer will have their own unique style of writing. I choose to write a sentence, leave it for the next six months, and then return to my notebook. For my current book, I have done that for two of my three notebooks. Yes, that’s right three notebooks. Notebooks are a very good tool to use if you are going with a plot for your book like I am. You can make a tab around the point where you want your character to finish building their home in the woods, or start home-schooling their child. You can use notebooks also to put your story into parts or chapters. I have difficulty setting the chapters apart because once to type it up, the chapters seem incredibly short even though they were pages long in your notebook. Before you even start writing a story, you need to know your characters. Sit down on your bed with a cup of hot chocolate and interview your characters. Ask their name, age, hometown, where they live, their deepest, darkest, secrets. You are not a novelist really. You are a reporter, and anything you learn from your character you will share with the world by putting it in your newspaper. Sometimes to get a story you need to ask your character questions, like, “Do you have a diary?” or “So your parents were killed in a fire, but you found them in the woods???!” From a few absurd little details, a story takes place. One character can give you a plot, a setting, and almost everything else you need in a story! If you are writing the story from first person view (I stared at it blankly), then you can let your main character write the whole thing for you. First person is a very commonly used type that lets the reader see the world through
your main character’s eyes, or you can instantly dump the audience into the character’s shoes. When you have an idea for your book, think about the audience. Your readers. The people you want to entertain. Do you want to write a book for people of all ages? Or is your idea suitable for girls age nine to nineteen? Whatever it is, you need to make sure that the content is suitable for the audience. You do not want a 5 year old to read a book about a gruesome war in space where all the aliens have nuclear bombs and machine guns! And you don’t want to bore an adult with a limp as lettuce fairy tale. So you need to find a perfect balance. Who do you want to write for? So that’s most of what you should know when writing a novel. Now you are ready to become a novelist, what do you want to write about? What intrigues you most? What do you have a passion about? Do you have an idea that you can illustrate to your reader with words? Write, write, write, and let your writing be read. Spread the word. Work with friends. Just keep writing! You’ll get there soon enough. By Stina Ellis

Giant Pandas The giant panda is a mammal because it produces milk for its young. Giant pandas look like a combination of a bear and a raccoon, but is neither. However, scientists say that it may be related to the two species. A giant panda is large, has white fur, and has patches of black on their ears, legs, and a black band between their arms. Giant pandas come from the Sichuan Province in China. Most of their waking hours are spent eating. Their diet is made up of mainly bamboo, and they cannot survive without this food. Giant pandas are very protective of their young. When danger is around, they bark loudly to scare it away. When a panda sneezes, it comes out as an ear-splitting bark, so when they are in trouble, it is like they sneeze the danger away. Giant pandas are my favourite animal, because they are big, fluffy, and very cute. Giant pandas are brilliant animals. Do you like pandas too?
