ARC 615L Advanced Research in Environmental Controls: Computer Simulation of Energy Flows in Buildings Aireen Batungbakal Masters of Building Science
ABSTRACT With its notable design, it is questionable whether Marmol Radziner and Associates’ Vienna Way Residence provide adequate amount of daylight throughout its interiors, particularly from its south exposure. Due to Marmol Radziner and Associates’ Vienna Way Residence high glazing ratio on its south elevation, the study’s intent was to measure illuminance within its interior space through its south windows. Concerned with light distribution, which entails to heat exposure and natural day lighting, an illuminance study was conducted to determine whether light shelves, configured differently, affects the daylight penetration and distribution within a given space. With light shelves directing daylight into the space, the study aims to determine whether materials’ reflectance values has an impact in distributing daylight once it hits the surface. The residence’s kitchen consists of openings on all sides- corridors on its north and south elevation and windows on its east and west elevations. As the residence’s core transitional space, the kitchen is an ideal space to test measure illuminance and its distribution. Considered as an effective method, light shelves were integrated with the kitchen’s south windows. With two material schemes, four light shelf iterations, the effectiveness and limitations of light shelves were determined based on analysis grids ( plan and section view), illuminance ratio, and illuminance values. Provided with illustrative grids and node values, in lateral and axial axes, it correlated a relation between sun penetration and surface contact. Using Radiance (through Ecotect) as the primary analysis tool, a relation of lightshelves, in how it’s oriented and dimensioned, affected daylight penetration. Its impact was exemplified by correlating two analysis grids, the horizontal grid (plan) and the axial grid (section).

INTRODUCE ISSUE + BACKGROUND RESEARCH To determine which iteration best distributes daylight within the entire space, not only the room’s boundaries into the interior of the ance analysis of Vienna Way the analysis grids show that the direct light is concentrated within one area. Introducing light shelves onto its south windows would enable the space to avoid direct, strenuous light and receive distributed daylight.
