Inspired by San Francisco’s Goorin Brothers Hat Shoppe (Haight & Ashbury), Change of Mind sells accessories, mainly hats and artwork. Its name represents the store’s aim, its two sides- to sell hats and provide the public with a new perspective with featured artwork. As its hats and artwork is exhibited, they can also be purchased. In order to exhibit its merchandise and emphasize its form, contours, color, and texture, the shelves (for the hats, accessories, featured apparel) will consist of an array of Tokistar Advantage Series placed on the top, bottom, and side of the shelving surfaces; therefore, the object on the shelf and the objects below the shelf (which is another product and shelve below it) will have sources of lighting from three axes, emphasizing its 3-dimentional profile (see Detail 01- Shelving). With three sources, objects’ form, contour, texture, and richness is dramatized. It would be preferred to have the shelves and walls finished with a fabric to create a soft, diffused glow. On its alternate wall consisting of mirrors and steel rails, its shelving also contains Tokistar modules. In addition, merchandise (including artwork that can be attached to the rails) can receive light sources from spot lights composed of Luxonic 471 Alterlites. The stream of spot lights permits the ability to focus on either side of the and space adds dimension (photography concept of foreground and background). While trying hats on their heads, users within the space will be enticed to look upwards. Providing removable and adjustable translucent installations (see diagram: Fabric) will not only add a dynamic feel into the space but also serve as another method in directing light. In addition, it enables shoppers to look at all merchandise, from bottom to top. With Lynk linear fixtures that are adjustable the fabric installation can be interactive. For shoppers to try on the hats, ‘scene stations’, which consist of different lighting, are placed opposite of each fitting room’s mirror. Providing a wall imitating a night scene and another surface imitating natural daylight will enable shoppers to see how the merchandise would look (see diagrams: Scenes and Differing Light and Scenery). Compliant with Title 24, the design techniques effectively displays merchandise without exceeding its allowable light power (based on square footage). Minimizing the number of fixture types demonstrates the design’s versatility to create various effects in each space. (see diagram: Title 24 Compliance).
