HELLO FROM THE 2017-2018 BULLETIN EDITOR While school may be out for the summer, Circle K at OU does not stop giving back to the community and enjoying time with friends.

Our members went on fun vacations, attended our Club Advisor’s wedding, and traveled to San Antonio for CKIx. Now that summer is coming to a close, we are looking forward to Circle K meetings again and welcoming new members into our club!

NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome back Circle K'ers! I can't believe summer has come to a end but that means we can officially begin our amazing Circle K year! Over the summer we served our communities and although we all live in different areas we all found a way to give back! Our meetings this semester are Mondays at 7pm in the Oakland Center. I look forward to seeing everyone every Monday! One major thing we are focusing on is building our club/membership. Bring a friend to join you at a meeting, anyone and everyone is welcome! We recently got a new school faculty advisor, Nancy Savage! She is a professor at OU and is looking forward to meeting all of you! I know we will do a fantastic job this year truly embodying service, leadership and fellowship! Have a wonderful week back to school!

E-Board Retreat Detroit Zoo Royal Oak, MI On May 6th, our E-Board held an E-Board Retreat.

While not all members could be in attendance, their participation was still there!

Our E-Board enjoyed seeing the animals, going out the lunch, and selecting the new 2017-2018 Committee Chair applicants!

SERVICE & VOLUNTEERING

Kiwanis 5K Pennant Race Utica, MI – May 7th Our Club volunteered at the first ever Kiwanis 5K Pennant Race at Jimmy John’s Field. Members helped pass out water bottles to runners as well as helped guide runners to the finish line by cheering them on.

Bike Rodeo Shelby Township, MI – June 4th

The 29th Annual Bill Hoehn Memorial Bike Safety Rodeo and Family Safety Fair was held at Whispering Woods in Shelby Township, MI. Some of our members who attended this event had the chance to pass out a Brand New Helmet to every kid at the event.

Loading Shoes for Eliminate Washington Township, MI – June 5th Some of our members had the chance to load numerous bags of shoes onto a truck for the Eliminate project. Throughout the school year, our members collected slightly worn shoes to help eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus.

Every 5 pairs of shoes helps save 1 babies life!

SERVICE & VOLUNTEERING

Lowry Center for Early Childhood Education Pre-K Celebration June 8th and End of the Year Picnic June 14th Our President, Emma Densmore, had the chance to volunteer at her works celebration party for children heading off the Kindergarten and family picnic to celebrate the end of another school year.

Volunteering at Beaumont Hospital Hanna Boussi, our clubs Service Chair, has spent most of her summer volunteering at Beaumont Hospital Dearborn in the main Surgical Unit.

Habibs Cuisine Fundraiser July 30th

Forgotten Harvest With MDYP August 26th On Saturday morning some of our members volunteered with the Metro Detroit Young Professionals at Forgotten Harvest.

SOCIALS & INTERCLUBS

Detroit Zoo Royal Oak, MI – May 11 The first social to kick off summer vacation was a trip to the zoo.

Movie and Dinner Rochester, MI – July 5th A few of our members went out for dinner and saw the movie “The House” for our July social.

Our club had the pleasure of attending the celebration of the Utica-Shelby Kiwanis Club’s 60th Anniversary. Members had the chance to listen to the Immediate Past-President of Kiwanis International, Sue Petrisin, who was the first international woman president. The celebration had a nice dinner, raffles, and speakers. Our club is so thankful for all the amazing things the Utica-Shelby Kiwanis Club does for us!

Utica Shelby Kiwanis 60th Anniversary Macomb, MI – June 15th

CKIx IN SAN ANTONIO

From July 5th – 9th, Jordan Parkin, Vice President, Nathan Wright, Treasurer, and Hanna Boussi, Service Chair, all had the opportunity to travel the San Antonio, Texas for the 62nd Annual Circle K International Convention. During CKIx, the members had the chance to volunteer, meet other members from all over the world, and bring back awards to our club.

“CKIx was a ton of fun this year. During my week in San Antonio, I was able to participate in a variety of activities such as explore the Riverwalk and take a Riverboat tour, visit the San Antonio Aquarium, sightseeing at the Alamo and Tower if the Americas, attend general sessions, and listen to Keynote Speakers, attend caucusing and house of delegates where I participated in voting for the next Circle K International Board, and most importantly, SERIVCE! This year I volunteered at Headwaters at Incarnate Word, a nature sanctuary in San Antonio, where we helped with environmental cleanup and restoration. My favorite part or CKIx this year has to be the reconnecting with other Circle K members from across the country that I met at last years convention on top of meeting and building new friendships. To top off my week, at the awards brunch, I was awarded FIRST PLACE traditional scrapbook for the entire organization.� ~Jordan Parkin Vice President of Circle K at OU.

CKIx IN SAN ANTONIO

Nathan stated, “I had a great time exploring San Antonio with my fellow Circle K members from around the world! It was my second time at a CKIx Convention and I loved every minute of it. I had the opportunity to be a team leader throughout the week and I made many great new friends and caught up with some old ones. “CKIx was such an amazing experience, were I was able to learn so much about Circle K International and different ways to network through workshops at the convention. While I was there, I volunteered at the San Antonio Food Bank where I helped sort and box items based on category for pick up with members of different Circle K’s from around the world. My favorite part of the convention was all the bonding with the Michigan District and providing service for those in need.
