There’s so much more to the ‘Gelignite’ Jack Murray story than just cars, speed and explosions. ‘Gelignite’ Jack Murray exploded across Australia’s headlines when he won the 1954 REDEX Reliability Trial—without the loss of a single point. ‘Don’t take yourself too seriously and have a lot of fun along the way’ was his credo. As he said, ‘I engaged in various sports with various successes’: cycling, VFL schoolboy football, stock car racing, hill climbing races, car endurance events, Australian and NSW Grand Prix racing, international and Australian rally driving, wrestling, boxing, hunting, ocean boat racing and waterskiing … to name most, but not all. His son Phil Murray tells his father’s incredible story—from the inside. Comprehensive, accurate and frank, ‘Gelignite’ Jack Murray reveals the man behind the wheel. It’s a great read, not only for those interested in the history of Australian motorsport but for anyone who enjoys a laugh and has an interest in the way we were and the characters who shaped us as a nation.

‘Bloody brilliant.’ – Greg Norman This book tells the magnificent, sometimes tragic, always inspiring stories of the greats of golf and how they lit up the world with their own brands of magic. Since Old Tom Morris won three of the first five Open Championships in the 1860s, so many greats have vied for that prize and others. Did you know that Bobby Jones created the famous Augusta course? That Sam Snead won three green jackets? Let’s not forget Ben Hogan, Gene Sarazen, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer (The King) and Jack Nicklaus. Then there was the magnificent Seve, the Great White Shark and Tiger. And the women are here too: Karrie Webb, Jan Stephenson, Patty Berg, Annika Sorenstam and Mildred Ella Didrikson Zaharias, known as Babe after Babe Ruth because she was truly magnificent. Written by sports writer and golf mad Matt Cleary, A Short History of Golf is one man’s take on the highs and lows of the great game of golf.

SPORTS AND RECREATION
John Taylor was born in North Devon in 1871 and didn’t do much at school, leaving aged 11. He did learn a lot at the excitingly-named Westward Ho! Golf Club and became a club maker who was very good with them. He won the first Open Championship held in England in 1894, and followed it up with wins in 1895, 1900, 1909 and 1913. John Taylor was a founding member of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) and according to famous golf writer, Bernard Darwin (grandson of Charles), turned a feckless group of pro golfers into a ‘selfrespecting and respected body of men’. James Braid came from the Kingdom of Fife in Scotland and worked as a club maker in London until he was 26. He also played golf every day. He was six-foot-three and gave the ball a whack. He was recruited to work as a pro at Romford GC in Essex. He went close in the Open Championship of 1898 (won by Harry Vardon), then dominated the first decade of the 20th century winning in 1901, 1905, 1906, 1908 and 1910. After his victory in 1908—by eight shots—Braid joined Harry Vardon, Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris as four-time winners of the Auld Claret Jug. Dr J.G. McPherson of St Andrews wrote in The Golfers Magazine: The crowd got what they came for, an exhibition of golf which, at the present time at any rate, only Braid can provide. He is now in a class by himself—he drives further and putts better than any of the others … he is the longest driver in the world. The ball goes off like a rifle bullet … James Braid is a hero unequalled in the modern history of the game of golf. They called them ‘The Great Triumvirate’. And that was apt. It stuck forever. 30

obby Jones created Augusta National as a sanctuary. He played in each Masters, as a favor to chairman Clifford Roberts. But he didn’t practice and he didn’t care. Betting money flooded in on him for he was Bobby Jones and in practice rounds, he would be in hot form. But he never did better than T13 in his first Masters—the first Masters—in 1934. Bobby Jones was as big as Babe Ruth. He was the Michael Jordan and Pele of golf. He was so famous that hundreds of people would follow his social rounds, and look at him with crazy eyes, as people do. Bobby Jones called his putter Calamity Jane. It was the most famous putter in the world. After he won the fourth major of his 1930 Grand Slam of titles that was called the ‘impregnable quadrilateral’, he held the club above his head in triumph. People noted that it was held together by brown leather tape. The shaft had broken through misadventure (not 31
Who needs modern self-help gurus when a 19th century novelist and playwright had it all worked out? Oscar Wilde delighted in making fun of social conventions, shocking his contemporaries by laughing at serious issues and showing a profound wisdom about men, women and relationships. Wilde’s amusing quotes – taken from his plays, novels and essays – are keen observations on love, marriage, money, work, beauty, age, relationships and life. Be shocked, amused and entertained. www.newhollandpublishers.com
