EDITOR'S LETTER

LAUREN HUYNH HAPPY MARCH key clubbers! I still cannot believe that my term is coming to an end and that this is my last newsletter. This year, I have learned so much from key club, more than I would have ever imagined. My key club journey began freshman year when I just went to the weekly meetings and occasional volunteer events. Sophmore year I started going to DCM's and meeting new people. Junior year was my first and last time going to DCON and to be honest, that was one of the most fun school trips I got to experience. Your typical shy and quiet girl became more outgoing, voiced her opinions, crawled out of her shell and met new people. At DCON, I talked to people in our own club that I would have never talked to. I got to see friends that go to other schools in different divisions and

I felt a sense of family with people who enjoy not only volunteering but screaming out chants as we march to the convention center. I have seriously never screamed so loud in my life. DCON felt so carefree, it felt like a safe space to express yourself without judgement from others. I was constantly surrounded with people with open arms to trade pins, share a hug, and exchange contact info. DCON made me so excited and less nervous to come into my term as your bulletin editor. Don't get me wrong, this year hasn't been the easiest ride but you don't gain anything from taking the shortcut. The roller coaster ride I experienced taught me how to do things on my own, that it's okay to ask for help, and to be confident in my own work. Despite DCON being cancelled, I am proud to end my term on a high note. I hope you have enjoyed my colorful newsletters and fun Insta feed. Forever in love and service, Lauren Huynh

PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS

BEN BUNYATIPANON Hey dragons! I never thought that I would be ending my term so soon, and I especially never thought I would be ending it like this, not at DCON but quarantined in my home. Just because we weren’t able to have our celebration of service this year doesn’t mean that the things we’ve done or people we’ve met have any less importance. This club has given me so many experiences that I’ll hold with me for the rest of my life, and I hope that it will do the same for you. I’m so grateful to have been able to spend my last year of high school with this community of amazing people, you’ve all truly made it the best I could’ve asked for. Before I leave, I only ask for one thing. Never lose that spark you had the first time you realized you

belonged in key club, that first volunteer event where your friend splash water all over you and you laughed about it for weeks. That spark is what keeps this club going and what has kept it going for years and years. I found myself losing this spark over time, but when I finally regained it, it made my experience with everyone 200 times better and I regretted ever feeling the way I did before. I love this club and I love all of you, I wish the best for everyone in the future and know that you will all succeed. Don’t be a stranger and always reach out to me whenever you want to talk, I will always be here for you. With lots of love, It’s unfortunately time for me to sign off. JORDAN TAM Hello everyone! Although this term has come to a sudden end I want to thank all of you for becoming such a happy memory in my life. I could not wish for another club that would do me prouder than this one. My time as Vice President has taught me many things like how to lead, organize, have fun, and many other things. I’ve grown so much as a person this year than any other year in high school and I can attribute it to you guys! I hope that everyone takes something from this term and ends up happier than you are when you started. Don’t forget that you are important and always will be! Even though I did not get to meet all of you yet, I still want the opportunity to!

So if you ever see me anywhere, don’t be afraid to come up to say hello or ask a question. Even after my term and after I graduate, I want you all to keep key clubbing and have fun doing it. If there is one thing I want you guys to take away from this term, it is to have fun no matter what you do. And don’t forget, I love you all!! - Jordan Tam

ANGEL DINH Hello! Hello! With March coming to an end, comes the end of my term. The past year serving as your secretary has allowed me to not only learn more about myself but as well as the members. I never thought that I would be able to learn so many names in such a short period of time. My Key Club journey up until now has been such a memorable experience. Like many, I’ve joined during my freshman year; I remember how fun I had while volunteering for the first time, working with a large friendly group of people for the first time, and felt that I belonged for the first time. Through Key Club, I have been able to build old friendships while starting new ones, volunteer, and give back to the community, and build longlasting memories with my fellow

peers. With that, I want to also thank my service committee members for being such a sweet, kind, and hardworking bunch this past term. They’ve worked hard in the preparations of after-club activities and service projects. Next, I want to thank the current board for everything that they’ve done. Although there were a lot of challenges that we’ve encountered this past year, it has taught me to have more confidence in myself and to speak up for the things I believe in. I also want to thank our advisor, Mr. Nguyen. Without his help, we wouldn’t have been able to do as much as we did the past year. Thank you for always being so supportive and pushing us to do our best. Lastly, I want to thank all of you guys for making the past year, such a fun experience. I enjoyed being able to work with you guys and get to know a lot of you better. I can’t wait to continue serving you guys as your president with the upcoming 2020-2021 term. JAYLA PERKINS HOWDY THERE key clubbers! (I’m not crying, you are). As my term reaches its endpoint, I can’t help but reflect on the past year we’ve shared. Being an officer has taught me the ins and outs of key club but also how to grow as a leader and a person. Coming into my term, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I had just gotten involved in key club and I wasn’t really sure of myself and whether or not I could achieve the goals that I had sought out for. However, you all have helped make this an amazing year and have inspired me to continue serving our club! All in all, i've been challenged in several ways and stressed on multiple occasions but I wouldn’t trade this term for anything even though things

didn’t always go as planned. I’m extremely grateful to be able to come back next year and see all that we achieve before I completely say my official goodbye. Although we couldn’t end this year off the way we had planned, I still truly believe my term was well worth it and fulfilled. I hope the board and I have been nothing short of eminent, because you all deserve the best of the best. The last thing I’d like to say is to remember that service is the greatest award anyone can obtain but leadership is an opportunity that coincides. VY NGUYEN Hey everyone, I want to start off by thanking you all for such a wonderful term. I was given the greatest opportunity to watch so many of you guys grow and thrive in your own community this past year. As a senior, I look up to the freshman members a lot. You all are filled with the most drive and key club energy to pull the rest of the club through every year! Believe it or not, it’s the reason why upperclassmen do their best to make sure you HAVE an experience of a lifetime in our club. Looking back on my freshman year, I was intimidated by all the upperclassmen. I didn’t know much and quite frankly if I were to compare myself to my past self, I would be two completely different people. Ashley Vo, our club president 3 years ago came to visit a month ago and said that she didn't know

if my voice changed or if it’s because I spoke more than 4 words now (insert laughing emoji). Hard to imagine, but it’s the truth! Your character will change. I promise that you will grow and learn from every new experience you have within this club as long as you put the effort into it. I apologize that we were not able to end our term with the District Convention in Oregon this year. I know most of you were looking forward to it. Although it won’t be the same as 3,000 people in a convention center, I’ll figure out something with my innie and the outgoing officers to make sure you all get the closure that we needed as this year comes to an end. I will most definitely still be around Hazen, roaming the halls and popping in and out of your regular Key club meetings. But until then, this is my last letter as your Lieutenant Governor! Every month we choose a member to recognize. Our dragon of the month is Jessica! "Jessica is a hardworking and caring key clubber. She puts full effort into her work and has been an important member in publications. She is always staying after meetings to help out and I know she will be a great treasurer". We asked her about her key club experience and this was her response: Why do you like KC? I like key club because of the dedication and spirit that members have for their community and how we truly love serving. Fav key club memory? The December DCM because everyone was so welcoming and open. It was fun playing games and meeting new people!

COMMITTEE UPDATES PUBLICATIONS Our first project of the year was creating posters and decorations for the December DCM. We spent the week after school creating posters and making decorations. We created social media graphics for every fundraiser or event but our main focus was creating a scrapbook full of photos that captured our year as a club. We met every Sunday filling the book with western decorations to incorporate the DCON theme: wild west service. We put together moments that made this year successful and binded on beautifully designed pages. Throughout our year, we informed members what was going on and worked together to create a book that reflected the clubsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; accomplishments. - Caroline Smith (10)

OUTREACH Our first assignment for the year was to make posters promoting key club so people would hear about it and join. Next we brainstormed ideas on how to get new members. We thought about doing things at lunch or fun ways to get people interested. We met after school on a lot of Tuesdays to think of creative recruitment ideas. We helped set up with the DCM in December and although we did not have a lot of time to execute our recruitment ideas this year, there is always next year. Our main goal was to get people interested in the club and have new members. -Megan Green (10)

COMMITTEE UPDATES SERVICE Everything we've accomplished this year has taught me to develop a deeper appreciation for people like hospital staff or school janitors who we barely acknowledge. We started the year off with kindness week by passing out clothespins with positive messages, recognizing our 3 partners (UNICEF, Thirst Project, March of Dimes) by passing out stickers, and writing cards to teachers. Our long term service project was a hygiene drive, where we donated 2-3 boxes to McKnightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Family Care Night. This year, I've learned to be grateful for the little things and why it's important to express gratitude, as most of our projects focused on thanking those who help our community.-Anna Nguyen (10)

FUNDRAISING Our goal this year was to make as much money as possible for our club. Our first fundraiser was on November 17th at MOD Pizza. Being the first of the year, there wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a great turnout. Our next fundraiser, selling bubble waffles at the December DCM. We worked together to advertise and make the waffles selling them for $3 each. In total, we made about $115. In January, we started to pick up the pace. We had a Panda Express fundraiser along with a MOD Pizza fundraiser every Sunday in February. During this time, we also were selling Jamba Juice cards for $10 each. Although our year was cut short, we still were very successful as a committee and raised nearly $1000.-Olivia Kaiaua (11)

DCON DCON UPDATE UPDATE

WHAT ABOUT DCON? As you all have been informed early March, DCON has been cancelled this year for the health and safety of all PNW key clubbers, administrators, and advisors. I know this was devastating news for you guys as it was for me too. I was looking forward to all of our new attendees experiencing DCON and hope you still choose to attend next year. My heart is out there for our senior key clubbers that won't get to enjoy their last DCON. District elections have already taken place despite the cancellation of DCON and the new board has been elected. Check the PNW key club website, ESPRESSO newsletter, and email to stay updated and meet the new officers! Refunds are still being processed and taken into consideration so I will be sure to keep you updated.

CORONA CORONA VIRUS VIRUS

WHAT'S GOING ON? As the corona virus was declared a pandemic, everyone and their families rushed to grocery stores to stock up on food and necessities like toilet paper. In a time like this, I hope everyone is staying safe but also making smart choices. Be considerate of other families or elderly that actually have no toilet paper left. The same has been happening with face masks. Masks should only be worn by those who are sick or medical professionals. Due to the shortage in supply of masks, medical care professionals don't have any to use when working with sick patients. I think it is normal for everyone to feel uneasy and panic but remember to check the World's Health Organization for accurate and up-to-date information. I hope everyone is staying home and washing their hands to stay healthy. Excited to see y'all whenever our next meeting is!
