Welcome to SE21 As life is beginning to get back to normal, I am planning my first road trip to see my parents. I leave after I go to print and I really can’t wait to do something different! It has been lovely to go for dinner and sit inside. The only problem is I now have to think about what I am wearing underneath my coat! Our events pages start on page 6 this month with eight full pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. So there is plenty to do right on our doorsteps. The UK network for u3a now comprises over 1000 u3as, with a total membership of over 400,000. This group is for retired and semi-retired people. The Dulwich & District u3a are launching their first u3a Day on Wednesday 2 June. Full details can be found on page 22. After bringing back the Noticeboard last month, I have been inundated with notices. This month there are some wonderful part-time jobs available at local charities. Find out more on page 31. The Last Word this month goes to local chef David Datt who is running some exciting new supper clubs soon. Find out more on page 32. If you are running a local event, please do remember you can post events for free on the Around Dulwich www.arounddulwich.co.uk. Go to the events page and you will find the submit an event button. Until next time.

Gorgeous Geraniums Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

P

retty, a great filler plant, easy to grow, slug resistant but loved by bees, geraniums are a must. There are so many to choice from, but here are a few of the best.

Never Ending Blooms One of the most popular geraniums and rightly so, Geranium ‘Rozanne’ has striking large blue flowers with white centres and lovely mottled foliage. Happy in sun or part shade, its spreading habit makes it great ground cover, but do give it space. Most impressive of all is its amazingly long and late flowering period, from June right through to November. Newer hybrids include ‘Azure Rush’ a more compact version of ‘Rozanne’ with paler blue flowers and a larger white centre and ‘Lilac Ice’, a less spreading hybrid with fresh light foliage and pale lilac pink flowers. Or try ‘Pink Penny’ which will fill your garden with hot pinky/mauve flowers from June to October. (These newer hybrids take a while to get to garden centers but are available on line from Crocus or specialist nurseries.)

True Blues ‘Johnson’s Blue’ is another classically popular geranium, with delicate foliage and a mass of papery blue petals from May to August. Great under roses or shrubs, in full sun or part shade – too much shade can make it a bit leggy. Similar varieties include the newer ‘Brookside,’ with masses of intense blue flowers, and its slightly bigger seedling, ‘Orion’, which has larger, more violet blue flowers, on stalks high above the foliage.

Fab Foliage The spring flowering geranium phaeum with their wands of small flowers and striking patterned foliage are great for a shady spot - whether dry or damp, amongst ferns and snowdrops. Geranium phaeum black widow is very stylish with its deep purple black flowers and beautiful dark leaf markings. ‘Samobor’ is very similar, with slightly browner flowers and paler leaves. Or for something less somber, ‘Alba’ has airy sparkly white flowers, great for lighting up dark corners. The more unusual varieties ‘Margaret Wilson’ with its purple flowers against and lime 12 | SE21 - June 2021

green variegated foliage and ‘Rose Madder’ with gorgeous brownish pink flowers are worth looking out for too.

Small & Sweet Compact, low growing (around 20cm high) with dainty flowers, geranium sanguineum varieties make great ground cover for smaller spaces. Geranium sanguineum bloody cranesbill has dark green feathery foliage and vivid magenta flowers from March until June while the similar ‘Tiny Monster’ has a mass of larger shocking pink flowers until late autumn. Softer sanguinium ‘Album’ with small pure white flowers May to June but the beautiful pale pink flowers of sanguineum var. striatum will keep going until August.

Hot Stuff The bigger and bolder Geranium psilostemon with its vibrant magenta flowers and purple black eyes is stunning, but needs space (about a square meter). It flowers from June to August and the leaves turn fiery red in Autumn. The hybrid, ‘Patricia’ has the same dark eye but is a brighter pink and slightly more compact (60cm high) and longer flowering. The rangier Geranium ‘Ann Folkard’ has bright green early foliage and rich magenta flowers with a dark eye, again it needs space scrambling to a meter and flowers until September.

Roasted Strawberries & Elderflower Pana Cotta Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk

I

t’s strawberry time again! Without doubt they are one of my favourite fruits, and delightfully easy to grow. You don’t even need a lot of space – a hanging basket or planter on a balcony can yield an amazing harvest, and trust me nothing in this world tastes better than a freshly picked, sun warmed strawberry. Not many of ours make it home from the allotment, but if you do manage to get some back to your kitchen, I can highly recommend this recipe! Preparation 25 minutes + 4 hours setting time Cooking time 10 minutes - Serves 6

Ingredients • 1 litre double cream • 135g caster sugar • 3 vanilla pods, split and seeds removed • 50g elderflowers • 4 sheets leaf gelatin, soaked in cold water until softened For the roasted strawberries • 25g butter • 150g small strawberries • 1 pinch saffron strands • 2 tbsp brown sugar • 100ml elderflower cordial • a dash of balsamic vinegar • grated pistachio nuts to decorate

Method 1) Place the cream and sugar in a saucepan, add the vanilla pods and seeds, and bring to the boil. 2) Remove the pan from the heat, and add the fresh elderflowers. Cover the pan and leave to infuse for 5-10 minutes, before straining. 3) Soak the gelatin leaves in water to cover and set aside for 5 minutes 4) Squeeze any excess water from the gelatin leaves and add to the warm cream mixture, stirring until dissolved 5) Pour the mixture into small dariole moulds or ramekins, and chill in the fridge for 3-4 hours, until set. 14 | SE21 - June 2021

6) For the strawberries, preheat the oven to 1800C / Gas 4. Melt the butter in a non-stick frying pan and add the strawberries and saffron. After about 5 minutes, they should have darkened and taken on colour. At this stage, add the cordial. 7) Transfer the strawberries to a roasting tin, pour over a little balsamic vinegar and bake in the oven for 5-6 minutes, spooning over any syrup from the strawberries every minute or so. Leave to cool. 8) Turn the set panna cottas out of their moulds and accompany with the strawberries and syrup. Decorate with grated pistachio nuts before serving.

In Season This Month Fruits & Nuts - Cherries, Rhubarb, Strawberries Vegetables & Herbs- Artichoke, Asparagus, Aubergine, Beetroot, Broad Beans, Broccoli, Carrots, Chillies, Courgettes, Fennel, French Beans, Garlic, Lettuce, Mangetout, New Potatoes, Onions, Pak Choi, Peas, Radishes, Rocket, Runner Beans, Samphire, Spinach, Spring Onions, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress, Wild Nettles Meat & Game - Lamb, Wood pigeon Fish & Shellfish - Cod, Coley, Crab, Haddock, Hailbut, Herring, Langoustine, Plaice, Pollack, Prawns, Salmon, Sardines, Scallops (Queen), Sea Bream, Sea Trout, Shrimp, Squid, Whelks, Whitebait Going out of season - Asparagus, Elderflower, Gooseberry, Hare, New Potatoes

Health & Wellbeing

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com All About Setting A Few NonNegotiables Rules When It Comes To Your Health And Wellbeing A key component of your health and fitness journey is consistency. If you consistently do something – within the context of health and wellbeing - you’ll reap the benefits over time. And this month, I would like to talk about another key component: Your non-negotiables. I think when it comes to health it is really important to be clear about what must happen in order for you to remain fit, healthy and have a good sense of wellbeing. For that reason, I have got four non-negotiables that I have set that must happen each day.

The Non-Negotiable Challenge Before I talk about my own non-negotiables, my challenge to you is to think about what yours might be. The key takeaway from month’ tip is for you to take some time today, just five minutes, to think about what they are. It might be that you just have one and that is absolutely fine. One rock solid non-negotiable that keeps you on a relatively even keel. I recommend having not more than three or four. I have four, but then I have been nearly a decade in this industry and it’s kind of what I’m about. Start small and build up, as with all of wellbeing consistency is key.

Leanne’s Non-Negotiables Here are my health and wellbeing non-negotiables that must happen every day: 1) Daily meditation, five or ten minutes, but must happen daily 2) Vegetables on at least two of the three meals that I have a day 3) My sleep must start with a seven, so seven hours and a minute, great, seven hours and 59 minutes, amazing. For those of you thinking yeah right! There are loads of ways you can increase your time in bed as well as your sleep quality. 4) And then the last one is a minimum step count 16 | SE21 - June 2021

of 10,000 steps. Now that is a relatively arbitrary number, which we all tend to think about 10,000 steps being the goal, but it is a decent amount of movement. It is very approximately five miles of walking or traversing. These are my four non-negotiables for health and wellbeing. There are lots of other things that on good days, I want to try and get done, but these are my non-negotiables. I know that if those things happen, then the day is going to be easier. I am going to be more resilient. My immune health has been bolstered. My fitness has been given a boost or at least maintenance. My wellbeing generally is going to be okay. What are your non-negotiables or what is your non-negotiable? And be very, very clear on that. Build it in so that it happens organically, and then you can add from there. Please let us know what yours are, we’d love to have you share them with us! That is this month’ simple wellbeing tip, all the very best, stay healthy and good luck.

Music to Your Ears Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk Paul Smith, Head of Head of Instrumental Studies at Alleyn’s, talks about the whys and hows of your child taking up a musical instrument. Most people love music of some sort, so do share your enthusiasm and enjoyment of music with your child in any way you can as early as you can, and you could be sparking an interest that will give them - and you - pleasure for life!

THE BENEFITS The benefits are well documented: engendering good habits and routines, strengthening connections in the brain - which impacts on wider academic performance - as well as the confidence and ‘buzz’ from performing live. For older children, ensemble playing or playing in any group not only offers social benefits and a sense of teamwork, but it also improves communication, empathy, and listening skills.

CHOOSING AN INSTRUMENT Expose your child to lots of different styles of music and sounds, not just your own favourites. Music elicits a personal response, and we never know what will make a connection. Some styles of music are better suited to particular instruments, but the one your child likes the sound of is a good place to start. Piano and string instruments are easier to start early, while wind and brass may need the greater reach, more developed muscles or bigger lung capacity of an older child.

GETTING UP AND RUNNING Developing those initial skills on any instrument can be tricky, but a good teacher will help make the challenges fun! Once your child is up and running, practice can offer a refreshing break from homework. Your child’s teacher should tailor music choices to suit their musical preferences, but you should also expect practice to involve some technical work. This is what improves ability, allowing your child to play a greater range of music, which is more fun and creates a positive cycle.

ENJOYING THE PROCESS 20 | SE21 - June 2021

Theoretical understanding and the skill of sightreading are important and will help your child pick up new pieces more quickly. It’s fun to be able to move on to new pieces of music quickly rather than getting bogged down with the same piece every week, and receiving the same comments from your teacher, which can be demoralising! Hand in hand with this, a good teacher will also encourage good listening skills – students should know the sounds they are aiming for and a teacher will show your child how to create them. Music is all about emotions and expression. It might be a long journey, but there are so many enjoyable and satisfying hours to be had along the way. There may be times when it feels more of a challenge for your child, but if they can weather these moments, they will surely see the benefits in other areas of life, both at school and more generally, and hopefully you will have encouraged a love and passion for music that your child will carry in their hearts for ever.

Does Your Dog Have An ‘Off Switch’?

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

T

he dog that does not know when to switch off and settle can be a menace. We all know the type; once engaged in an activity he enjoys your dog will not stop pestering, whether he is leaping around, barking, whining, nudging you or pacing. If the the owner gives in and resumes the desired activity then the dog learns the ‘demanding’ behaviour gets him a ‘rewarding’ outcome. A common example is the dog that gets frenetic playing fetch and cannot settle or switch off after the game and may bark, whine or persistently jump up for more. Of course, the only thing that stops that behaviour is another throw of the ball and a catch-22 soon develops. The owner starts to dread playing any games with a ball and the dog loses out on vital enrichment and team work. Most dog owners, especially owners of highly driven working types, should view teaching impulse control as an essential doggy life skill. Teaching the young dog to learn to switch off on cue is a vital part of the broader journey to greater self-control. Learning that a resource (attention, treats, toys, exercise or a game) is no longer available and the dog has to wait until ‘next time’ and quietly settle and switch off until then, can be helpful in so many ways. The first step is to choose your cue word or phrase: ‘enough’,’ all gone’ ‘that’ll do or ‘finished’ are all options. I also like to use a hand signal, like a crossed hands gesture, along with my verbal cue. One way to start is to teach the cue on a simple ‘find’ exercise. If you try to first introduce this on a high energy ball game or tuggy, your dog could end up getting frustrated, which will hinder learning. Start with a calmer activity to establish the cue.

How To Teach A ‘Switch Off’ Cue • Have another family member or friend gently hold your dog while you place a few bits of kibble a couple of feet in front of the dog. • Go back to the dog and say ‘find’ and gesture to the kibble. • Your dog is close enough to see and smell the kibble and will go and gobble it up. • Repeat a few times.

• Now use your cue word ‘finished’ make a crossed hands gesture where your dog can see you, and walk away. • Place a chew or similar in your dog’s resting place. • Ignore any whining, barking, pacing or nudging. • When and if your dog goes to their resting area, lies down and starts to chew, give quiet, calm praise. • Keep practising with short training sessions at different times of the day and in different contexts. • If your dog gets very excited around food then use the lowest value food items you can. Once your cue is established, start to introduce it with different activities. If your dog is very persistent at ‘fetch’ then try using the cue in a short duration garden or indoor game first. Once your dog has had a few goes but is not hyped up, give your cue, pocket the toy and put it away, well out of reach. Ensure there is a treat or chew in the dog’s settle area. Do not give in to any sort of demand from your dog. As and when they settleand this may take a while- give quiet praise. Slowly build to more high arousal sessions. SE21 - June 2021 | 21

T

he University of the Third Age, or u3a, is an international movement which began in France in the 1970s and spread internationally, reaching the United Kingdom in the 1980s. In France it remains primarily educational but in this country it became a broader self-help group for retired and semi-retired people. The UK network now comprises over 1000 u3as, with a total membership of over 400,000. Each u3a is an independent charity with links to a national umbrella body, the Third Age Trust. The Trust has launched the first “u3a day”, originally to have taken place in 2020 but postponed to Wednesday 2 June 2021. Its aim is to promote awareness of the u3a; to help challenge negative perceptions of older adults; and to invite other Third Agers to learn how u3a supports the lives of older adults. Dulwich & District u3a was founded as recently as 2015 but already has some 700 members and 90 interest groups covering a broad range of interests from art, astronomy, birdwatching, boules and cryptic crosswords to table tennis, ukulele playing, walks and Zumba

gold. Some of the groups have had to suspend their activities during the pandemic, but many have continued to operate via Zoom. And our open meetings with a guest speaker, normally held monthly, have continued on Zoom with two meetings in most months. You can learn more at our website: https://u3asites.org.uk/dulwich/home COVID-19 restrictions limit what we can do on 2 June but we shall have a stall in the garden of Dulwich Picture Gallery – do come along to find out more! And our creative writing group will be reading outside Forest Hill Library. In 2020 the Third Age Trust updated its branding, so the logo no longer includes the words “University of the Third Age”, but instead “learn, laugh, live” – a good summary of the range of our activities.

21 June 2021: Summer solstice cheer or damp squib?

A

cross SE London and beyond many households are looking forward to the arrival of the final stage of the government’s lock down road map on 21 June 2021. However for tax credit customers, it may just be another summer solstice. It will neither mark the end nor signify a new beginning. The key date for tax credit customers is 4 June 2021. This is the date by which all 2.5 million tax credit customers should have received their annual renewal packs from HMRC. According to HMRC, “It is important that customers check the details contained in their annual renewal pack are correct, including income details. Renewing online is quick and easy.” Whilst renewals online may be quick and easy, many working tax credit customers are still coming to terms with the temporary rules introduced by HMRC at the start of the year. These rules were designed to help tax credit customers who suffered any reduction in their weekly working hours or were temporarily unable to work due to the coronavirus crisis. These temporary HMRC measures are applicable until the Job Retention Scheme (JRS) closes on 30 September 2021. The five changes of working hours; their impact on employees’ working tax credit; and the reporting requirement to HMRC, are discussed below.

Temporary Reduction In Working Hours Where an employee’s working hours per week have been temporarily reduced due to the coronavirus crisis, HMRC will treat the employee as continuing to work their normal hours (those before the reduction) until 30 September 2021. There will be no change to the employee’s working tax credit entitlement during that period. The employee will not be required to advise HMRC about any temporary reduction because of the coronavirus crisis until 30 September 2021. 24 | SE21 - June 2021

Permanent Reduction In Hours Where an employee’s working hours per week have been permanently reduced due to the coronavirus crisis, the employee’s normal hours will change for tax credit. If the change is such that the employee no longer qualifies for working tax credit, they may receive a four-week run-on of working tax credit. Employees must notify HMRC as soon as their working hours per week is changed permanently. All changes can be notified to HMRC via their online service or the tax credits helpline.

Temporary Laid Off/Furloughed Employees who are affected in this way will not experience any change in their working tax credit. HMRC will continue to regard the employee as continuing to work their normal hours until the end of the JRS. Employees are not required to inform HMRC of any temporary lay-off throughout the duration of the JRS. However, if the lay-off becomes permanent, HMRC should be notified as soon as possible.

Unpaid Leave Where an employee has agreed unpaid leave with their employer for any reason due to the coronavirus crisis, HMRC will regard the employee as continuing to work their normal hours until the end of the JRS. However, the employee has an obligation to notify HMRC.

Redundancy In the advent of an employee being made redundant due to the coronavirus crisis, they may or may not still qualify for working tax credit. If as a result of the redundancy an employee no longer qualifies for working tax credit, they may qualify for a four-week run-on of tax credits. HMRC should be notified of any redundancy as soon as possible. However, if an employee secures a new position within the 4-week runon period and the new employment satisfies the working tax credit hours then despite the gap between employments the employee should remain entitled to their working tax credit. As a reminder, tax credit customers should not forget the annual tax credit renewal deadline is 31 July.

Mindset Matters With Becca Teers | www.healthy-habits.me | www.mindplus-experience.com

Are You Bringing The Past Into Your Present Relationships? Do you often find yourself feeling negatively triggered by a partner’s words or actions? Or maybe you notice that you react irrationally or feel strong emotions (fear, anger or sadness) in response to situations in your relationship. If so, you may be responding from a past perspective, rather than being in the present and seeing the situation for what it really is.

Why do we tend to live out the past again and again? These reactions are often linked to our personal perspective and focus. We tend to ‘get’ more of what we focus on! To illustrate this, have you noticed that if you decide you’re going to invest in a new car, you see the make and model you’re hoping to buy everywhere! Look around you right now and notice how many red items/things you see around you. Now without looking around again, ask yourself how many green things you noticed when looking for the red? Normally this will be considerably less, if you noticed any green at all. This is because the mind tends to see what we’re looking for. Unconsciously our minds cause us to make decisions about partners and situations, which may be biased due to our past experience and beliefs. Imagine this filtered view in the context of a relationship. For a fictional example: Mathew grew up in a household where mother is very critical and controlling of father. On a subconscious level he creates a belief that women always are this way. Later in life when he is with a partner, he may ‘see’ suggestions or comments as criticism and feel agitated or triggered. He may be seeing the comment from his own ‘lens’, which comes from his past and a limiting belief that relationships are always a certain way. So how do we let go of the past and any limiting beliefs to do with relationships? Here are three steps: 26 | SE21 - June 2021

Awareness This is the first step to letting go of the past. Think about the messages you picked up earlier in life and how they could have affected your beliefs regarding relationships. If you’ve noticed any negative patterns in your relationships, ask yourself what the underlying belief is that may be keeping you stuck.

Neutralize Challenge the belief that may be causing your reactions or negative patterns. In the example of Mathew’s situation he could look at lots of examples of relationships where the female is NOT controlling and critical. Consciously seeking out more positive examples of relationship dynamics will neutralize his belief that all relationships are one way.

Acknowledgement Once you have awareness of what may be behind some of your reactions and feelings you have a choice. You can choose to take a step back from a situation, take a breath, count to ten. You can remove yourself from the situation rather than reacting negatively on the spot. You could also choose to trust your partner and tell them why you may be overreacting to things and how you are attempting to change this now.

or your average Dulwich Hamlet fan May Day fires-up the synapses like no other, evoking memories of play-off finals past. Our thoughts turn to the over before you’d downed your first pint defeat to East Thurrock on the wild and windswept wastelands of Essex. And then to the close but no cigar loss to bogey-team Bognor “Bugger” Regis. But on this year’s miserable mizzly May Day, our mind’s eye sought solace in recollection of that balmy blaze of an afternoon in 2018, where, in the boiling broiling backwater of our Mitcham home in exile, the Pink and Blues finally ascended to the Conference South. Three thousand Rabble invaded the pitch that day in barely believing delirium as Dipo’s winner billowed the back of the onion bag. And then half of East Dulwich headed to Lordship Lane and spent the evening whirling around the freshly christened Promotion Roundabout, drinking the EDT dry, and laying the foundations for the mother of all happy hangovers. Oh what joy when we have Edgar Kail in our hearts. Such days will of course return. But football at the Hamlet’s level is on ice for the remainder of the season. The signs of a thaw though are there. The Last Word – David Datt The most famous person you’ve met? I’ve seen a few famous people in the area. Had a chat with the TV Political Correspondant John Pienarr recently on Lordship Lane. I met Robert Glenister from Hustle in the area and also ran into Fred from First dates up at Sainsbury’s!!

Coffee or tea? Where? Coffee and would have to be at the Blue Mountain. When I first came to the area I got to know Mel the owner and he was very welcoming and also serves very good coffee!

The best meal I’ve ever had.. I’ve so many lovely meals and have worked with some amazing chefs and so tried some fabulous food over the years. But for me the best food I’ve ever eaten has to be when I was growing up as a child, eating the food that my Mum and Dad used to cook. My mum used make a mean Caribbean soup with spinners and lamb, the type of soup that she made me if I was ever feeling ill! My dad was the Roti king! David Datt is a chef living in East Dulwich. He runs his Fiji Fusion Supper Club events locally serving delicious dishes combining elements of his Fijian & Saint Lucian roots and his classical cooking training.

How long have you lived in the area? I’ve lived in the area for 3 ½ years now.

What brought you here? I am originally from Hoxton and was living in Brick Lane for a while but my girlfriend already lived here so she bought me here

What has changed most during that time? I’m really happy to say that although the pandemic has changed a lot of places we’re so lucky to be living in such a vibrant area and I think this area will recover quickly. Proof of the sense of community and local support for businesses is the Northcross road market, which still seemed to do well throughout this difficult time.

The one thing you couldn’t do without? The ice cream parlour Oddono’s!! I love a little walk down there in the evenings and they do some great sorbets too.

Do you know your neighbours? Yes I do know some of them, it’s lovely! We do the pub quiz in the Bishop together sometimes. 32 | SE21 - June 2021

Your favourite place to go for a drink? This depends on the occasion! The Great Exhibition or the Actress for watching the sport. For a nice cocktail Fifty Seven on Northcross Road or House of Tippler (which for us has a nickname of “The Black Hole’ as if you go in there and see people you know it’s very hard to get out!!) For a Sunday pub quiz and a large glass of wine or a beer The Bishop.

The best kept secret... I’ve been suffering with a bad neck for a few years and an amazing Soft Tissue Therapist Anna at Dulwich Therapy Rooms has really sorted it out!

Where’s your favourite place to walk? Dulwich Park or Peckham Rye Park.

When I want to relax... I love to go to Therapy on Melbourne Grove for a Deep Tissue Massage and then come home for a snooze!

My secret ambition.. To cook on TV in some capacity. Also to be an author and I have been writing my book for the past few years. I will publish it in the near future! ...................................................................................
