Welcome to SE22 We are now approaching our 7th week of lockdown and life has changed so much. Unfortunately I was unable to distribute my April magazines, but I am determined that SE22 will keep going, whatever happens, so here is our online version. The magazine has been available online for many years, but I will be making a special effort to share this one far and wide. Please do use the share this copy with everyone you know! There has been so much to be thankful for in the past six weeks. One particular highlight is the SaveEastDulwich raffle set up by local resident, Victoria Rennison. The full story is on page 6 and there is still time to buy a ticket and support our local economy. Local photographer Irma Arrowsmith got in contact about her doorstep photos of families in SE22. See the wonderful results on pages 22 & 23. Around Dulwich has an update on how some businesses have adapted their business to cope with the lockdown, see page 28-31. As always we have lots of extra news and stories on our website www.arounddulwich. co.uk, so please do check it out. On Friday 8th May, we will be celebrating VE Day. I am grateful to Vicky from Essentials Magazines for kindly sharing some wonderful lockdown suggestions for celebrating in style. See from page 34. I have been overwhelmed by the support of my clients who have supported this online issue. Please do try to buy local where you can. Keep checking our social media channels for updates on businesses reopening. Please note that you click on links in ads and stories in this issue. Until next time, take good care.

Save East Dulwich

Community Raffle

#saveeastdulwich | tinyurl.com/yc5fbjuy

Local resident Victoria Rennison decided to do something to help East Dulwich during the Covid-19 Crisis. "I have lived in East Dulwich for three years now and moved here because of the wonderful atmosphere in the area, with so many independent shops and businesses, friendly people and a real sense of community. With the latest government advice meaning so many of these local businesses have suddenly had to close, the impact was immediate and palpable. I saw online how they were trying to innovate and offer what they could but worrying what might happen to their shops, restaurants, cafes, gyms etc. so I wanted to do something which helped them financially in some way but also raised awareness of their plight and encouraged people to support them, shop and spend locally and help them get through the other side.” The idea of the community raffle is to sell tickets to people all over East Dulwich and the surrounding areas and use all proceeds raised to buy gifts, vouchers, hampers and experiences from independent businesses. There were 10,000 tickets available and for every 50 tickets purchased, a new prize was added to the raffle. The draw happened 6 | SE22 - May 2020

on Easter Day and there were many happy prize winners. After the success of the first raffle, Victoria decided to do Round Two! "After the amazing (and unexpected) success of the first raffle, with all 10,000 tickets selling before the Easter Day deadline and being able to support 50 wonderful businesses, I had a week of relaxing a little and letting it all settle down but couldn't help think there might be appetite for another round. And it was so heart-warming to hear so many lovely comments and feedback on how people would love to buy more tickets and get involved again, so I thought I just had to give it another go! This time we’ve added a twist - some prizes are big and beautiful, some prizes are small and beautiful but all prizes are a real representation of what East Dulwich has to offer. And for all the headaches and late nights that come with it, if we can raise more money for our local economy and make even more of a difference, it'll all be worth it!" We caught up with a couple of the local businesses taking part: "I can’t thank Victoria Rennison enough for the organisational feat of putting together the Save East Dulwich so swiftly and helping out so many local businesses including the SE22 Piano School. We are very much looking forward to meeting all the raffle winners as soon as we can re-open our premises just off Lordship Lane." Lorraine, SE22 Piano School www.se22piano.co.uk "We're so grateful to Victoria for all her hard work on the raffle, it's incredible that she managed to organise it so quickly and so effectively. The level of support for local businesses is really heartening and encouraging at this very tricky time. Thank you to everyone involved!" SE22 Councillors Councillor James.McAsh | James.McAsh@southwark.gov.uk |

Coronavirus: The Council And Community Response The previous edition of our councillors column was submitted just before the lockdown was announced. Since then, it feels like the world has been turned upside down. People are understandably scared by everything that is happening. But it has also highlighted the very best of our society: from the key workers risking their health for others’, to the mutual aid groups offering solidarity and support to their neighbours. Every Thursday, we thank not just our nurses, doctors and carers, but also refuse workers, bus drivers and those working in shops. These are the people we rely on the most in a crisis. Perhaps when it is all over, our society will learn to value them more. Locally, the council has transformed everything it does. Staff have been redeployed to key services and emergency relief. In a matter of weeks, the council created a totally new Community Hub to signpost businesses and residents to the support they need. We have ensured all rough sleepers have a roof over their head. We made millions of pounds available for hardship relief. We have halted all debt-collection for those struggling to make ends meet. I am so impressed and grateful for the amazing response from Southwark Council workers. We must push the government to support councils to continue programmes likes these.

10 | SE22 - May 2020

@mcash

It is not just workers who have risen above and beyond their call of duty - the response from volunteers has been astonishing too. Within days there were active mutual aid groups for both Goose Green and Dulwich Hill wards, which quickly led to smaller street-based groups too. The work they are doing is amazing: for many residents, these volunteers provide a vital lifeline to the world beyond their doorstep. We councillors have been coordinating with the groups - hosting regular meetings with them on Zoom and cascading information between them and the council. Have a look at their website: http://goosegreenmutualaid. co.uk/ and consider making a donation to their foodbank collection: every Monday afternoon between 12-3pm at Oru Space, 20 Lordship Lane.

This is a difficult time for everyone - and it is most difficult for those who already had it worse. But I am heartened by the response from everyone in our community. When this crisis is over I look forward to working with you to build a fairer and more resilient society.

Your Gardening To Do List For May Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw Now that we’re spending more time in our homes, those of us lucky enough to have one are appreciating our garden more than ever. Here’s how to keep yours at its best at this time of year.

Pruning Prune early flowering shrubs like weigela, ribes, philadelphus and deciduous magnolias. Cut back flowered growth to strong young shoots lower down the plant and around a quarter of older stems. And cut back flowered shoots of choisya for the chance of a second flush. Prune back Clematis montana and armandii, as well as honeysuckle and other vigorous climbers. Lightly prune evergreen topiary and hedges with pruning shears. Cut back flowering stems and yellowing foliage on spring bulbs (around six weeks after flowering). Until then, keep watering and feeding bulbs to prepare them for next year. ( Growing bulbs like tulips in a pot is a good way of avoiding having to look at the foliage as it dies back as you can move it away.)

Tidying Keep on top of weeds – pulling out dandelions while they’re small is easier as you need to remove the whole root. Stake tall herbaceous perennials such as peonies now before they start flopping over other plants. Tie in climbing and rambling roses– ideally horizontally to encourage more flowers. Tie in sweet peas regularly as well as other vigorous climbers such as clematis and akebia to control where they grow. Mow the lawn once or twice a week, raising the blades if it’s dry – little an often keeps it healthier. Feed the lawn with a liquid or slow release fertiliser such as chicken manure pellets.

Pests Keep an eye out for slugs and snails, particularly after rain, and around new shoots. Pick them off by hand or use organic slug pellets or beer traps (jars of beer sunk into the soil to attract 12 | SE22 - May 2020

and drown slugs!). Keep checking roses for aphids spraying them off with soapy water or squashing them off with your fingers.

Watering & Feeding Start giving the garden a really good drenching at least once a week in warm weather, especially plants that like moisture such as hydrangea, anything newly planted and developing fruit and vegetables. Containers can need watering daily – depending on the plants. Feed flowering pot plants weekly with liquid fertiliser and feed hungry plants like sweet peas. Apply or renew a mulch of well-rotted manure to beds to cut down on weeding and watering – ideally after a downpour, as mulch keeps water out, as well as in.

Planting & Dividing Divide spring flowering perennials to make new plants followed by a feed and water. Plant out courgettes and tomatoes in a sunny spot. You can also sow French and runner beans straight into the ground now as well as perpetual spinach and Swiss chard – which can look nice and lush in your flower beds - as well as continuing to sow beetroot, radishes and lettuce. Surround ripening strawberries with straw to keep them off the soil and protect fruit bushes with netting. Plant out dahlias and tender exotics such as canna toward the end of the month.

Burgers T

Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk here is nothing that beats a good homemade burger and these are superb. This is a really simple recipe that guarantees truly scrumptious Burgers! It is very easy to follow and as always, a huge hit with the family! If you don’t have horseradish, use mustard. If you don’t like mustard, keep it simple and leave it out! Add sundried tomatoes to the meat mix and pickles before you serve. It really doesn’t matter, just enjoy them! This is a uber quick and ultra-delicious recipe. Fabulous for a BBQ - at a safe social distance of course. Watch me make them over on Instagram: https://bit.ly/2YgIpd6 #cupboardcookeryclasses Cooking time 30-40 Minutes

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • •

750g minced beef 1 onion (or shallots) - chopped A handful of chopped Parsley 2 clove garlic – crushed 2 large tsp horseradish sauce (or mustard) 1/2 tbsp Worcester sauce 1 egg Up to 2 tbsp breadcrumbs Extra onions to caramelise for the buns 6 burger buns Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Method 1) Heat Olive Oil in frying pan 2) Add Chopped Onions and two cloves of garlic 3) Add a pinch of salt and pepper 4) Cook onion until transparent then leave to cool 5) Take the minced beef, place in a bowl and add two tablespoons of Worcestershire Sauce, two large teaspoons of horseradish sauce, a pinch of salt & pepper and a dessertspoon of freshly chopped parsley 6) Break your egg into the minced beef and mix all ingredients together in the bowl. 7) When the cooked onions & garlic have cooled add them to the mince. 8) Keep the frying pan to one side as you will use it again to caramelise onions later. 9) If your mince looks too wet you can add a tablespoon of breadcrumbs to it at this point and mix well. 14 | SE22 - May 2020

10) You can use the pan you cooked the onions in to check the consistency of the burger mix if you wish – simply fry off a small amount, like a mini burger in the pan to check it holds together! When you are happy with the mixture place it in the fridge until ready to use. 11) Time to caramelise some onions! Add some more olive oil to the frying pan along with 25g of butter and melt together. 12) Add one sliced onion to the pan along with two or three pinches of sea salt and about a tablespoon of brown sugar, along with a tablespoon of white wine vinegar. 13) Cook down a little, tossing the onions initially, then cover with some silver foil and leave to simmer on a low heat for about 20 minutes to caramelise fully. 14) While the onions are caramelising take your burger mix out of the fridge and divide into 8 equal portions. 15) Mould each patty into a meatball shape then flatten down into a burger. 16) Return to the fridge for about 20 minutes to rest. 17) When onions are caramelised, it is time to cook your burgers on the hob or the BBQ. As you have used mince beef be sure to cook them right through, you can pop them in the oven for 5 minutes before serving to be sure of this. 18) Serve in a bun to your taste, whether that’s with ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, onions….. the choice is yours!

Absorb & Redirect

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com

T

his month I would like to talk about a concept that my business partner Antonia has been talking to me about‌ Absorb and redirect. It's an idea that comes from Kung Fu, which is a very old, traditional Eastern or Chinese form of martial arts, often inspired by old Chinese philosophies, religions and legends. The particular style that Antonia practices (there are many Kung Fu styles) teaches you that in order to become an efficient martial artist one should avoid resisting the forces that come towards you from your opponent. You should instead absorb, redirect and make that energy work for you. I think it's an interesting concept and relevant for today’s challenges. We've got a lot of negativity swirling around, but we also have the opportunity to create and take advantage of a great deal of positivity.

The idea of absorbing & redirecting You absorb the energy that's coming at you, both positive and negative, and then you redirect it. Think about everything that's coming your way. In Kung Fu, for example, if you resist your opponent you become inflexible, paralysed even and therefore unable to move and defend yourself. Also, you are more likely to lose the fight. If, however, you absorb your opponent’s energy and redirect it you are in flow and constantly adjusting and adapting. And if you think about it, this concept is not just valid within the context of a Kung Fu fight. The idea of absorb and redirect can be applied to all kinds of situations in life. What can you do to absorb energy? Don't get too embroiled or too involved in or paralysed by it, redirect it into something really positive. An example could be helping others. Many people who are on furlough have taken up volunteering work. There's been about three quarters of a million people who have offered to help the NHS (Antonia and I are two of them, by the way). You could look at helping your local community and there's a lot you can do to help yourself. 16 | SE22 - May 2020

Another example of how you can absorb and redirect that energy could be by looking at your outgoings and consolidating those things more. There are many different ways that we can redirect our energy in a really positive way. I hope that idea makes sense to you. Someone else described it to me as, "Take the gifts." You know, sometimes you'll think, "I don't want that," and, "Yeah, I'll definitely take that." But it's all a gift in some way and you may not be ready to hear that right now, but at some point you will be. Take those gifts, absorb that energy that's coming in and think about how you can positively redirect it. For some of you, you'll be ready to action this. Others, you'll thinking, "I'm going to have to think about this one because I'm not in the right head space." That's fine too. All the best for now. Stay healthy. Leanne Spencer

Life In Lockdown Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

A

s I write this it is difficult to know for how much longer lockdown is to continue. A phased return to the workplace in May or June could still leave significant numbers facing isolation, although it is hoped that by high summer there may be some respite, if only until the autumn. In terms of the impact of the pandemic on pet owners, there has been plenty of online information from the government and other reputable sources about managing pets as well as the important fact that pets can carry the virus on their fur and paws, making regular hand washing after contact with your pet a must. Fortunately, dog walking has been viewed as essential exercise and many will have benefitted from this, not least the dogs. However, peering into the future, two possible consequences of lockdown are of particular concern for behaviourists. The first is in igniting or augmenting separation issues in dogs, the second is the impact on socialisation of pups reaching key developmental windows just as lockdown started. It is not clear why some dogs are more prone to separation issues than are others. Please note, I use the qualifier ‘issue’ rather than ‘anxiety’. It is now thought that many separation problems can be the result of frustration and lack of separation training in puppyhood, rather than necessarily an anxiety disorder or some other pathology- although these clearly exist too. What we do know is that even dogs who have learned to cope with being left for hours at a time can quickly sensitise to separation again if the family/owners suddenly start to stay at home for extended periods. This is a common occurrence at Christmas time when having enjoyed constant companionship for a few weeks the dog ‘objects’ to his owners returning to work. At such times owners can make the mistake of assuming that because the dog copes with sleeping downstairs alone at night, it knows and understands how to be alone. For those continuing with varying degrees of isolation the best advice is to ensure your dog has ‘alone’ time, even if you are in the house

18 | SE22 - May 2020

with them. Go ahead and put them in another room, shut the door and limit access to the rest of the family. Make sure some of the alone time involves you leaving the house altogether; when you go for essential shopping is one opportunity but do vary the times of day if you can. The dog needs to hear that front door shut and other family members should also go into another room and separate from the dog. If your dog has a meltdown then don’t panic but you will have to revisit basic separation training and build up again. Trainers and behaviourists will be happy to help if you get stuck. Fortunately, separation training lends itself to consultation by remote. For puppy owners who got caught up in lockdown as soon as their 8- week old pup arrived you will be aware of the challenges that face you in terms of socialisation. However, try not to worry. Although not ideal, there is good research to indicate that pups of a sound underlying temperament can still recover from lack of socialisation, even if they were brought up in a shed! This is not to say you will not have to work much harder, just that all is not lost. However, please research what you need to do and ask for help from trainers and behaviourists.

Mindset Matters With Becca Teers | www.healthy-habits.me | www.mindplus-experience.com How to Deal with Your Emotions and Stay Calm & Positive It’s human nature to not want to feel pain (emotional or physical pain) and this is why we often prefer to ‘bottle up’ negative emotions rather than feeling them and expressing them. Another aspect of this is that many of us have grown up without being shown how to express our emotions in a healthy way and so we can become afraid of them. We’re scared of a bad reaction or confrontation when we do say how we feel. We may also have learnt to believe certain emotions are ‘wrong’, such as anger, fear, dissapointment, sadness or jelousy. The truth is these emotions are natural and normal and they just need acknowledging (even just to yourself) to become ‘unstuck’, allowing you to release them and feel better.

What happens to suppressed emotions? We push our feelings down but by doing this they don’t go away. They sit beneath the surface and can affect us negatively in different ways. Our emotions are held in the subconscious part of the mind: the part that is not under our conscious control. If we don’t identify them and release them they tend to fester and can be unhealthy for us. For example, if you’re upset about something a partner has said or done and you don’t acknowledge these feelings in a healthy way, you may become more and more resentful and this can affect your relationship negatively. Using this example you may only need to identify these feelings just for yourself and assess whether you do need to express them to the person involved, or not on this occasion. But if you don’t even articulate these emotions to yourself, you’re not really dealing with them at all.

depression, insomnia and physical symptoms like stomach issues, headaches, neck and shoulder tension and pain.

You need to feel it to heal it Here’s a simple tool for acknowledging your feelings and in doing so they become ‘felt’ and will simply pass. This is a super-simple way to acknowledge and process an emotion in order to let it go so that it no longer affects you.

Thought/Emotion Interrupter It is best to write this down, but you can also just run through the process in your head if it is not possible to get pen and paper out! By acknowledging the thought/feeling rather than trying to push it down or letting it take over, it will be processed & released. The second part of this technique allows you to identify an alternative positive feeling, which starts to train the brain to be more positive and resourceful.

Fill in the blanks below when you are feeling triggered; 1) “I am feeling........................................................................................ because...................................................................................................... ” Stay with the feeling for a couple of minutes and breathe. Now the turnaround, which gives you the opportunity to identify and feel an alternative or more helpful (or even just a neutral) way to think about something: 2) “I would prefer to feel................................................................. and feeling this way will allow me to

How do we push our feelings down?

.......................................................................................................................... “

We may use distractions like overeating, drinking alcohol, drugs, watching TV, excessive work or shopping to prevent us facing unwanted feelings. These distractions work in the short-term but suppressing and not dealing with negative emotions can put stress on both the mind and body in the long-term. This can result in anxiety,

If, like many of us processing your feelings is a new habit just practice this tool whenever you need it. The habit will become easier and more natural the more you do it. Realise that by developing this new behaviour you are looking after your mental and physical health and also improving your relationship with yourself and others.

Local Interest

Lockdown portrait project from East Dulwich documentary family photographer Irma Arrowsmith Local East Dulwich documentary family photographer Irma Arrowsmith found she was really missing everything she loved about her job once the COVID-19 pandemic caused the UK lockdown and led to the postponement of her shoots. Wanting to stay creatively challenged, she began to think about ways to keep herself busy - while still taking the current safety measures into consideration. That’s when she decided to reach out to the local East Dulwich community to see if families would be interested in a free ‘lockdown portrait’ to document this extraordinary moment in their lives. All the participating families are getting Irma’s photos of them for free - as her way of saying thank you for their participation and as a small gesture of solidarity in these strange times.

22 | SE22 - May 2020

As well as allowing her to stay creatively challenged, her Life in Lockdown project also helps keep her in contact with people something else that she misses now we’re all cooped up at home. “It’s one of the privileges of being a family photographer that you meet so many different, interesting and lovely people - even if this now has to be from at least two metres away!” All the portraits in Life in Lockdown are taken of local families who live within a half hour walk of Lordship Lane - as Irma is fitting the shoots in as part of her daily exercise allowance. The photos are taken on their doorstep or balcony, in their garden or yard, or at a window - and always from a safe minimum distance of two metres.

Life in Lockdown

Irma is still taking requests for portraits and will be continuing with the project for as long as the current “lockdown is in place. Anyone interested in taking part can contact her directly via her website. Eventually she hopes to turn the collection into a local exhibition and possibly even a book.

Business Focus in Lockdown

We caught up with one of our lovely clients, John from Alexandra Nurseries

A

t Alexandra Nurseries in Penge we are proud of our place in the community and delighted to find people feel the same. Our existing customers, neighbours, friends and newcomers have been keen to support us with kind words and custom! Of course this would be one of the peak times in our industry and it has hit us all hard, including our loyal growers, nurseries and suppliers. We have found the relationships built from 8 years of trade; of trust, loyalty and flexibility - both ways around - have kept us in good stead. Small independents have been able to suddenly downsize, re think how to operate and market and between us we are just about keeping each other going. Moving into ‘Amazon’ territory has been very challenging especially for a small shop with no existing online sales operation! We have all become perhaps too familiar with a click and collect climate and expect our stuff tomorrow! We have one person and one phone-line, one person on admin and email and a very talented instagrammer! With over 100 queries a day on those three platforms it’s been fun! So to all your readers— so sorry if we didn’t return your call, you couldn’t get through, or we lost you somehow - please forgive that and return for excellent cake and coffee and browse the lovely vintage garden things and quality plants soon . We thank too our lovely loyal furloughed team, who have been patient and trusted us as we work through the uncertainty. Being partly family run has been important giving an incentive to adapt and proceed beyond a straight business ethic, and the directors of the company have been working flat out to keep on top of everything. Our 8th birthday this week would have been our opportunity to greet you all with tea and cake. Watch out for the celebrations next year! Being a small business has allowed us to remain true to our values and, while we are not perfect, we rejoice in that. We are a creative

company made up of different personalities and skill sets, and in the current context this has meant we have the ability to adapt. We are fortunate to be a garden centre as the demand for our products remains strong, It has been satisfying to help people enjoy Spring, get into their gardens, connect with loved ones from a distance - they’ve been sending plants seeds soap and vouchers! Enabling people to create, grow and be in touch with nature has always been our aim - we are still here and hopefully back to full speed soon! Financial Matters

With David Frederick FCCA | Marcus Bishop Associates | marcus-bishop.com

Three Stay–At-Home Financial Activities The current state of uncertainty has been challenging for some homestayers, whilst others are battling with what to do - a residual group have already checked out, according to the conversations over the past month. Whatever your position, there will be periods when windows of time opportunities arise and the risk of boredom begins to float in the mind. To help reduce this risk of boredom and from discussion with homestayers, three stay-at-home activities are provided below: 1) Short-term planning 2) Personal financial review 3) Self-assessment 2019-20 preparation These activities are set within the backdrop of uncertainty and a look forward to beyond business as usual, post stay-at-home policy. The uncertainty and the arrival of the word, ‘furlough’ in our lexicon, continues to place unplanned pressure on household finances, irrespective of our starting point. The past month has seen businesses engaged in plans for their short term (the next three months). This short term planning can also be extended to individuals and serves as the first of our three stay-at-home activities.

Short Term Planning The end date of this stay-at-home policy may be unknown but what is known for certain is that the policy has led to varying degrees of financial cost, pain and agony. Many households, have experienced notable changes in their cash inflows and outflows. Hence now is the time to understand and seize control of your financial position. The recommended method is the preparation of a cash flow forecast for the next three months. Some individuals already do this, so they can advance to the second activity. However, if your personal finances are still in limbo, it is not too late to start. Preparation of a personal cash flow forecast only requires two tasks. Firstly, for each of the following three months identify your expected 26 | SE22 - May 2020

monthly cash inflow and their sources. Then repeat the same task for your expected monthly cash outflows. Combining your monthly cash inflows and cash outflows will produce your monthly net cash balance. In other words how much cash you have in your pocket! When planning for cash out flows, it is imperative to resist the temptation to plan as though life is the pre stay-at-home period.

Personal financial review Stay-at-home is an unusual period and your financial review calls for unusual behaviour. The unusual behaviour required is to challenge every item of expected cash outflow. At this point copies of bank and credit card statements for the past three months may prove helpful. Every item of cash outflow should be subject to the ‘is it essential test?’ This period is not the time for procrastination or sentimentality. Procrastination can seriously damage your financial health. The application of such a stringent financial review should result in your awareness of every planned item of cash outflow. Now is the time to lockdown on your personal finances and retain control. Once control has been taken and focus has been on identifying the essentials, it may be possible to consider some non-essential (treats) expenditure, subject to sufficient net cash flow.

Self-Assessment The fiscal year 2019-20 ended on 5th April and that signals the birth of self-assessment 201920 season. In recent weeks, the self-employed have learnt the importance of filing their selfassessment tax returns. These open windows of time opportunities during stay-at-home presents golden opportunities for taxpayers to fully assemble all their records to complete their 2019-20 self-assessment. Such an early start, is even more important for all taxpayers taking advantage of the option to defer their 31st July first payment for 2019-20. One week into the new financial year and our first tax return had already been completed, despite stay-at-home. During the uncertainty of our stay-at-home policy, be mindful that once time has been spent it cannot be refunded like cash.

Local Fashion Designer Makes Happy® Face Covers Karen Arthur is a 58 year old women’s bespoke fashion designer and sewing tutor. She works primarily with ankara and African printed fabrics. With normal client meetings on hold until the lockdown is over and her airbnb guests cancelled overnight, Karen found income ceased suddenly. Luckily she transported her sewing machine and some fabric from her Catford studio to her home in Forest Hill just before lockdown was announced. The first thing Karen made was a face cover for herself out of leftover fabric she loves and posted a photo on twitter. Now she is making wear your happy® face covers daily for a client base that shows no signs of abating... especially since the Mayor of London endorsed wearing face coverings as an extra layer of protection recently. Karen says “Sewing face covers is saving my sanity and giving me an added purpose during lockdown. Not to mention giving me back some control over my finances and security for my family.” 07930 867826

The SE22 Piano School The SE22 Piano School has adapted to lockdown by offering online piano lessons for all of our students that used to come to our business premises just off Lordship Lane. I trialled out online lessons with my students a week before the lockdown announcement which enabled my team of teachers to have a system in place that would work as soon as we had to close the doors on our shop. In addition to teaching piano, I also teach online fermentation workshops where I show people how to make kimchi, sauerkraut and kombucha. I have been doing these online via Zoom and all profits go to my chosen local charity which is Westminster House Youth Club in Nunhead. You can find out more about this on my Instagram page: @southlondonferments. Lorraine Liyanage | www.se22piano.co.uk

Jason Shelley from Crofton Books says: “We are trying our best to stay open *safely* through Covid, opening limited hours from Wednesday to Saturday each week with two people max in at a time. We offer an appointment service whereby individuals can enter during a fixed timeframe and I can close the doors (and discuss book choices, books etc, at a distance). Some locals have offered to home deliver, for people in isolation. We have delivered books for free helped by locals who are Kei (who fortunately has a motorcycle), a retired headmistress, Edwin an Australian teaching assistant, Annie, a writer in Honor Oak and James, an urban planner who lives in Crofton Park. Artists Kathryn Maple and Alison Boult, who are neighbours to the bookshop offer me tea in a flask and now we are collaborating on some work to exhibit.” @croftonbooks | 07572 869750 Remember to check out our website and social media channels for new stories every day. @AroundDulwich.

Look Before You Leap Interiors with Bradley Viljoen | www.bradleyviljoendesign.com

L

ast year I was contacted by a client who, with the best of intentions, passion and energy and, believing he had everything sorted, threw himself into his property’s refurbishment. His builder was given full responsibility for the day to day project management. After just 2 weeks into the project, the cry for help came in. Engaging an interior designer at this late stage is not uncommon but, is fraught with problems. The client may not know the interior designer’s work and approach, the existing design may lack professional aesthetic and practical input, and the space for conflict and/or compromise is wide. The purpose of any refurbishment is to fulfil a human need. Having early professional input is critical in the design and delivery of an outcome that successfully satisfies that need. The project contained perfectly suitable technical information for any builder to follow. What was lacking is what turns a house into a fully functional and comfortable home. Lighting would have failed to meet the required outcomes for ambient, accent or task needs. Electrical sockets were placed randomly, some of no use to anyone. Wardrobe doors did not open as they clashed with the beds. Radiators were poorly placed and affected furniture layouts. Quite simply, the technical plans would not have met the client’s practical needs or realised the vision he had of how he would be living and experiencing his new home. We may think these sort of design issues would not happen under our own watchful eyes, but, they do, and often. Back to my project. The build continued at pace and headway had to be made quickly despite the lack of design specification, including furniture, fixings and equipment. We kept as far as we could to the original plan. Where design decisions and compromises had to be made, and quickly, the agreed alterations also had to be within budget or as close as possible to it. Do not expect an approved design to be static; they rarely are. The client’s preference was to source products organically as the project moved towards completion which would have had created conflict with the build programme. The need to specify,

32 | SE22 - May 2020

source, and order all the required products had basically been overlooked. I knew action had to be taken and the cry for help became a call for action. Immediately mood boards were produced, specialist stores and shops visited, wall colours tested and chosen, all within a few weeks. Luckily, (or was it by design?) all the chosen materials came within a few days of being required on site. Any further delays would have paused the project. If you have the freedom to make your design options, choosing what you want when you feel the need to, then you are in the fortunate minority. In my experience, deadlines are generally always set around a ‘move-in date’ or, a need to be settled before the school term starts. Expectations are therefore high. As a designer, my desire is to help my clients make their choices and inevitable compromises at the start of the project, when they have the greatest freedom, not at the ‘11th hour’ when the result is in some way less than desirable and when additional costs can no longer be avoided. My advice is to nail down everything at the start, understand your build, products and ordering schedule and be ready. You will then be able to leap into your refurbishment with confidence.

VE Day - Stay at Home Victory Party Ideas

When VE Day dawns on 8th May 2020 it will be 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. Years of carnage and destruction had come to an end and millions of people took to the streets and pubs to celebrate peace, mourn their loved-ones and to hope for the future, but not forgetting those still in conflict until 15th August when it was announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War II. The 75th anniversary will provide our nation, and our friends around the world, with an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people from all walks of life who saw us through this dark and terrifying period. To commemorate this important time a three-day international celebration had been organised to take place from 8th May to 10th May 2020. Unfortunately, due to the terrible Coronavirus emergency and consequent Government guidance the majority of these celebrations have either had to be cancelled or postponed. It is hoped that events can be moved to the weekend of 15th – 16th August when we will be able to celebrate VE Day and VJ Day, both momentous points in our history, but this has yet to be confirmed. However, in true British spirit, the current lockdown situation does not stop us from making our own victory party celebrations at home to mark this momentous occasion. The following pages will help you put together your own celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Kesar &SCo OLICITORS Lost your job? Discriminated at work? Perhaps you can get legal aid? Legal aid is not available for employment disputes, right? Well, not completely. It can be available if your dismissal was based on harassment, victimisation, direct or indirect discrimination or breach of duty. You will still be expected to meet the funding criteria and provide evidence of your financial eligibility such as letters from DWP, but you could have access to an experienced legal practitioner and free, impartial legal advice and representation.

What falls within the scope?

The Equality Act 2010 offers protection to those who have experienced discrimination based on one of the “protected characteristics”, such as race, religion, age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex or sexual orientation. Victims of discrimination will be expected to prove that they have been treated differently from the people who do not share their protected characteristic or have experienced a provision, criterion or practice which is discriminatory. If the alleged discrimination involves a public body, it is important to consider a possible breach of the public sector equality duty. The Act imposes an obligation on public bodies to eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it.

What is the aim of legal action?

The courts may award compensation for the loss of earnings and related quantifiable losses as well as damages for injury to feelings. Although the victims have a duty to mitigate loss such as taking steps to find employment, such a requirement does not cover injury to feelings. The damages the court is likely to award are divided in 3 brackets: • lower band of £900 to £9,000

(less serious cases)

• middle band of £9,000 to £27,000

(cases that do not merit an award in the upper band)

• upper band of £27,000 to £45,000

(the most serious cases), with the most exceptional cases capable of exceeding £45,000

Who can qualify for legal aid?

The funding is very restrictive. The eligibility criteria have not been reviewed for many years and did not follow the rising cost of living, property prices, increase of income, including the minimum wage and other relevant factors. You can assess your own eligibility at https://www.gov.uk/legalaid/eligibility.

Not sure what to do?

Your nearest law firm with a specialist LAA discrimination franchise would be happy to help. Even if you don’t qualify for legal aid and are asked to pay a consultation fee, it may well be worth it! Kesar & Co Solicitors 27 London Road, Bromley, BR1 1DG Tel: 020 8181 3100 Email: contact@kesarco.co.uk www.kesarco.co.uk

What are the deadlines?

The proceedings at the Employment Tribunal must be initiated within three months of the end of your employment. The Equality Act allows more time, but the claims must be issued within 6 months, unless the alleged discrimination is ongoing. SE22 - May 2020 | 35

“The Chair Sanctuary has been advertising in SE Magazines for over a decade and it’s proved to be such a good decision for us as the magazines are so widely read and trusted by our clients. Angela is a great advocate for local businesses and her advice has helped us expand the reach of our upholstery and furniture renovation services. It’s great to feel so linked into the local community which Angela really helps drive. We can’t recommend Angela and SE Magazines highly enough!” Karen Wood and Kathy Daniel, www.thechairsanctuary.co.uk “I have advertised with SE magazines for several years now, previously to promote my former business which grew and became very successful in the local area and also now to launch my new business. These great local magazines are the best for attracting new business and also act as a gentle reminder to existing clients. I would highly recommend advertising in them!” Becca Teers, Author, Therapist, Trainer, Speaker www.healthy-habits.me www.unlimited-book.com

The latest from the Chairman, Tuesday 28th April 2020

ost importantly I hope as many of you as possible are well. I hope you are all finding ways through the personal and professional challenges of the lockdown and if there is anything we can do to help please email community@dulwichhamletfc.co.uk. It has taken longer than expected to be able to provide a meaningful update so please accept our apologies for the delay. We have been frustrated that the progress of the football authorities has left us unable to communicate where we stand as a club until over a month into the shutdown of football activities. Football has not dealt well with the situation but I can assure that that having been party to many of the discussions the blame does not always lie where you have been led to believe by the press and social media commentators. After this week’s National League vote, we finally know that the 2019 20 season has come to an end so I would like to thank you all for your heartfelt support and I cannot over-emphasise how important that decision is. It means we will survive and we will be back together with our community whenever the time is right for our sport to restart. We have prepared for four different scenarios for whatever happens next and our role is to support the national and local authorities by implementing whatever decisions they take on when it is safe for us to be together again at Champion Hill. The vote means we are free to plan and free to communicate with our fans and so going forward we will provide regular updates on a variety of subjects including those some of you have already enquired about. During the past five weeks the future of the club has been at/ risk our efforts each day Photo: Simon Lunn Greatand Northall Woods have been spent solving the short-term financial

problems without compromising our long-term future. Whilst we will go into more detail later about how we intend to overcome the challenges ahead of us I cannot tell you how moving it has been to find the door is open whenever we have called to discuss our situation, in particular so far, London Borough of Southwark, Bulb Energy, Crystal Palace FC and our own supporters’ trust. If I have one disappointment it is that because so much of our community work is based on bringing people together there was no natural transition to helping during a lockdown but due to our proximity to King’s we have offered the use of the stadium and surrounding lands to the NHS whilst they are evaluating what they need. Please stay safe and please look out for each other in whatever way you can. Ben Clasper, Chairman

The Last Word – Sara-Jane MaCabe Hi I’m Sara-Jane; I have been a baby, child and family photographer for 8 years making beautiful memories for local families. I have also recently launched my headshot and brand photography business helping local business owners to capture the story of their brand, attract their perfect clients and grow their business.

How long have you lived in the area? Almost 9 years. I had spent many years living in Crawley but after returning from a secondment in Oslo, Norway (in my previous career as an accountant!) I decided that I wanted to move into London. My friend lived here and I loved the area so decided to make it my home!

Your favourite place for a night out? I do love the House of Tippler for their amazing cocktails. Food-wise I would choose Dulwich Tandoori or Yama Momo. Lordship Lane is missing somewhere to go dancing though!

Coffee or tea? Where? I am a very strange English person who doesn’t actually like tea or coffee! Can I say wine?!

Where’s your favourite place to walk? Dulwich Park definitely. The lake, the flowers, the café! It’s also my favourite place to do outdoor family photo sessions. The bridge makes such an amazing feature in photos.

The one thing you couldn’t do without? I’m not sure I could choose one! I guess if I did it would have to be my camera. My top five would also include chocolate, wine, travel and my friends.

The most famous person you’ve met? Oooooh I met Jason Manford when I photographed his baby girl for a secret photo session for his girlfriend for Mother’s Day. It was so funny waiting outside his house until he called me to say she had left and it was safe to come in!

Describe your perfect weekend If it was sunny, I would take a walk around Peckham Rye and then head to the Rye to meet friends for lunch as it’s my favourite pub garden in the area. If it was raining then I would head to Lordship Lane and grab a pub lunch at the EDT or the Bishop and go to the PIcturehouse to watch a cheesy chick flick! 52 | SE22 - May 2020

My perfect holiday…. I love wildlife and photographing wildlife so definitely a safari in Africa. Ideally combined with a week afterwards on a beach where I could indulge my love of diving and relax with some cocktails.

If money was no object… I would do a 3-week trip around Antarctica, Georgia and the Falkland Islands where you can see a lot of species of penguins, especially the King and Emperor penguins. Penguins are my favourite animal in the world! www.shutterbaby.co.uk www.shutterme.co.uk
