PICTURE FROM THE PAST This Edwardian postcard shows the first Grove Lane Baptist chapel that was really situated on Pingate Lane, but only a few yards from the junction with Grove Lane. The date stone below the gable shows the date of 1840. Attached at the rear you can see the caretaker’s residence which may have been added at a later date. In the 1840s the chapel would have been quite isolated within a largely farming community. The chapel must have quickly grown for by 1846 a day and Sunday school was built on Grove Lane where today you can still see the date stone. The chapel had a very simple interior and people will

remember in the 1940s, 50s and 60s the congregation sat on long hard benches! The chapel was demolished in the 1990s to make way for today’s new church. Readers who remember this area will have memories of Lucy Brunt’s tiny grocer’s shop, Mr. & Mrs. Baldwin’s post office and Bob Burrows’ timber yard. Those were the days when this area was still very much a little community. Peter Crummett, Stockport Historical Society.

PAINT CHEADLE HULME & BRAMHALL PINK Jo Hoddes from Bramhall, together with three more ambassadors, Emma Riley, Jenny Rodger and Emma Riley (yes there really are two Emma Riley’s) are planning to PAINT CHEADLE HULME & BRAMHALL PINK. From the end of April, and throughout May, they want the whole of the community to be awash in pink! It’s about holding a range of exciting, fun and sometimes wacky fundraising activities and events, all with a pink theme. We’re talking special pink events , pink shop windows, pink cake sales, pink cocktails the posibilities are endless. As ambassadors for the charity, which is based at The Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital, they are all super passionate about Prevent Breast Cancer especially as it’s the only charity in the UK entirely dedicated to predicting and preventing this devastating disease.

LET’S GO OUTSIDE

O

ur outdoor spaces are an extension of our homes in the warmer months, let’s give them some love and create an extra space to enjoy this summer. Here are some tips. Create a colour scheme. If you already have some outdoor furniture, start there. There are lots of greys and blacks as the base colour of outdoor furniture. This looks great with a bright colour and works well against the gorgeous greens in your garden. Yellow can be a great contrast and is a perfect summer colour. Throws and cushions can be picked up quite inexpensively and give comfort and warmth on chillier nights. Go with blocks of colour mixed with patterned items for great impact. If you have more neutral colours in your outdoor furniture like natural rattan, choosing a bolder and darker colour gives great impact. Dark green, black or navy are all fabulous with neutrals. Mix different textures for interest and pick some flowers or twigs from your garden to dress your table. Outdoor rugs are great for zoning a space, making it look more like a room as gardens don’t have walls to section spaces off. There has been an explosion of options recently, many eco-friendly examples to choose from, stain

resistant and washable. Add some lights, this is great for a few reasons. String lights look pretty, even in the daytime, giving a fun festival feel. They provide light after the sun has gone down with solar powered lights easily available helping with our power price increases. They further

help to zone an area. Lanterns with tealights or pillar candles can be hung from trees using metal S hooks or string. Shopping outlets or second hand is a great way to stay on budget when updating a space. You can freshen items up with a can of spray paint. Anything from furniture to bottles can be given a new lease of life. Enjoy the summer and get in touch if you need any help.

SPRING IS HERE!

Spring Activities for Older Adults

Winter is behind us, Springtime is here! The warmer weather and increased daylight hours are the reasons that many people say that this is their favourite season. It is the time of the year when we start to spend more time outdoors, we see the leaves return to the trees, plants begin to grow again, and hibernating animals awake. We associate spring with colour, cheerfulness and new beginnings, There is such a lot to enjoy at this time of year, here are a few activities and ideas, especially for older people. Appreciate the outdoors and nature After spending so much time indoors during the winter it is good to get outside, to enjoy the fresh air and get close to nature. Taking a walk in a park, visiting a farmer’s market or local garden centre can help us feel connected to life, nature and a chance to pick up fresh produce too. For those who aren’t mobile sitting with windows open, feeling the breeze is a comfortable way to connect with nature. Or simply sit outside the house or on a balcony to appreciate the trees and spring flowers.

birds does not rely on having a garden, they’ll come if a feeder is hanging outside a window. Create an indoor garden

Having plants around the house brings a little piece of nature indoors. Growing an indoor herb garden is easy, does not require a lot of space and they are useful to use in cooking. There are lots of varieties of flowering spring plants that will brighten up a room and having plants around the home can increase feelings of well-being. Spring Cleaning This year, turn this chore into something more meaningful. A good spring clean will, of course, rid the home of clutter but it can also have a bigger purpose. The keepsakes and pictures you come across can be shared with family members and friends, it is a chance to reminisce and share memories with others. A spring clean is physical activity which can also improve focus, mood and help you sleep better.

Bird watching Spring sees the return of the colourful birds to our gardens. Make a note of which are visiting and the different bird song you hear. A bird feeder will attract lots of species, it is possible to create your own feeder from household items and to make the bird food too. Attracting the

I

write this exactly one year since Scott Parry Golf officially opened its doors at Bramhall Golf Club.

The members at Bramhall Golf Club have been amazingly supportive, it really is like one big family here, and I cannot thank them enough. We have 3 qualified PGA Professionals on our team here at the club, and the demand for golf tuition remains high, especially during the summer months.

ADVERTORIAL

We have been faced with all the usual challenges of learning how to set up a business, but when you throw in a complete shop refit, an extension at home, a new baby, and a global pandemic, it’s fair to say I have had my hands full!

We are also currently looking at further renovations to our Coaching Studio, once again improving the facilities and service for our members. Our first year was very busy in the shop, stocking all of your main brands such as Taylormade, Titleist, Footjoy, Callaway, Ping, alongside popular clothing brands such as Galvin Green, Under Armour, and Adidas. The main problem we have experienced as we are finally coming out of the pandemic has been the worldwide shortage of stock, and the logistical nightmare of getting it into the country. This is an issue for every business (not just the Golf industry). But once again I would like to thank our customers for their patience. If you live in the Bramhall area, even if you are not a member, please call in to see us at the bottom of Ladythorn Rd, we’d love to meet you!

BRAMHALL & WOODFORD ROTARY CLUB DUCK RACE AND FAMILY FUN DAY DAY…

B

YES! THE DUCK RACE IS BACK !

ramhall And Woodford Rotary Club is once again holding the Duck Race and Family Fun Day and this year it will be held at Bramhall Park on Sunday May 15th. The Club is very pleased to announce that Bramhall based Leighton Snow Estate Agents have once again agreed to sponsor this event along with the Vernon Building Society, Lynx Taxis and Robins and Day Peugeot, Stockport. Thanks are also due to Stockport MBC and Strawberry Radio for giving us their support. Before Covid we had hundreds of families turn up on the day many of whom use the increasingly popular free DUCK BUS Park & Ride service. Again we will have THREE (yes, three!) free buses running throughout the day between Bramhall Village (opp Tesco Express) and the Park, Hazel Grove High School and from Church Road, Cheadle Hulme with parking available at the two local schools. Track them with the app on our website (www.bwrotary.org) and then look out for the yellow DUCK BUS. Extra parking will also be available at Linney Road Scout Hut. Please use them if you can but, if you have to come in a vehicle, please park carefully and respectfully.

26 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2022

Starting at 11.00am, there will be a variety of duck races to watch and there will be specialty races with local celebrities and businesses getting involved by decorating giant plastic ducks who will go beak to beak in the river. As well as Duck Racing, with some fabulous prizes for the winners, there will be many sideshows a bouncy castle, games, singers, dancing groups and craft stalls. The Classics Cars will be with us again in the Walled Garden and there will be much, much more. There is no admission charge to this event. We have decided that money raised will be for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Manchester. (they help provide local practical support for those living in Greater Manchester with Motor Neurone Disease, via a dedicated team of local volunteers, many of whom have had personal experience and feel driven to help others) and other charities supported by the Rotary Club. Please drop a donation in one of the collecting buckets. Entry is still free but please enter a duck in a race for just a pound. You could be a winner of £100!

Jubilee Cocktail

W

hen we had that early warm spell at the end of March I started to get really excited about the Summer being here and lovely days spent in the garden with friends. The following week was FREEZING!!! Oh well. Anyway it made me think about the Queens Jubilee celebrations and things that may sit well with that weekend. For an easy going gathering I thought it would be great to do some canapes and cocktails. For a 2 – 3 hour cocktail party you’ll need about 10 canapes per head with a variety of about 5 – 8 canapes. Here’s a couple of ideas to start you off along with a jolly regal cocktail. Mini chicken ‘drumsticks’ 20 chicken wings 10 cm fresh ginger grated 2 garlic cloves crushed 1 tbsp hot chilli sauce 1 tbsp light soy sauce 1 tbsp granulated sugar 1 tbsp water Use the fat bit of the chicken wings only – save the rest for making stock. Combine the ginger, garlic, sauces, sugar and water in a bowl and add the chicken stirring to coat. Cover and refridgerate for about 4 hours or overnight. When you’re ready to serve preheat the oven to 180c. Place the chicken on a wire rack over an oven tray and bake until well browned and cooked through – about 35 mins. Serve warm or at room temperature.

28 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2022

Asparagus croutes 7 slices of medium sliced white bread. 10 asparagus tips – halved lengthways Chives 1 small jar of lemon hollandaise sauce Paprika to dust Stamp out 3 rounds out of each slice of bread – I use a small glass. Put the rounds on a baking tray and bake in a pre-heated oven (150c) for about 25 mins until crisp but not too browned. You can do this up to 3 days in advance and keep in an airtight container. Put the asparagus tips into a pan of boiling water and when it comes back to the boil drain immediately and refresh in cold water then pat dry. Cut the chives into 2.5m lengths. Spoon some hollandaise onto each croute then top with the asparagus, chives and a small dusting of paprika. Serve at room temperature. Jubilee Cocktail Chill a champagne coupe or large cocktail glass. Slice the top off a strawberry and cut a notch into the base so it will perch on the edge of the glass. Combine 20ml of gin (tea infused if you can get it), and 40 ml of Dubonnet or Martini Rosso in an ice-filled mixing glass. Stir for 20 seconds then strain into the chilled glass and top with Champagne. Enjoy the long weekend!

Health & Wellbeing

BAGS, BAGS, BAGS

W

omen and also Men love bags although men do tend to be more practical in their choices. If you, like me, love and use handbags it is worth just having a little think about how they may impact on our body and possibly even create or activate mechanical issues within them. I often pick up patients’ handbags (with their permission of course!) and can’t believe how heavy they are. If you think that you may carry this around with you all day, it is worth thinking how to minimise the impact this may have on your body. Here are a few top tips: 1. Declutter your bag – fairly obvious but it is amazing what we tuck into our bags just incase we may need it. I try to have a major declutter every few months but also have a quick skim through each time I go out to check there’s nothing I really don’t need that day. 2. If you need to have larger items that are also heavy ie computers iPads or books consider a backpack or an across the body bag. These distribute the weight more evenly. They also leave your hands free which is a bonus especially if juggling small children, tackling public transport or standing around at events. There are now some really beautiful and imaginative backpacks which come in various sizes. I have a lovely collection for all events. 3. If you do want to use a handbag you carry in your hands or over your shoulder try to vary which side you do this on.

30 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2022

4. If using a bag to carry heavier shopping it is always worth splitting the load into two bags and having half the load each side. Again there are some beautiful shopping bag designs, often that fold up into little purses that are perfect to have for emergencies – lightweight options in our handbags. These have also been a huge help in cutting down on the need for plastic bags. 5. Of course there is always the situation when out and out glamour is required and then we can just go for something beautiful. Fortunately these bags are usually smaller anyway and we don’t have to carry them for long – so just enjoy them. I hope this provides you with a few thoughts. One of my favourite brands of backpacks is Orla Kiely. There are various sizes, designs and colours. Let me know what your favourite brand is? Take Care

Mindset Advice

BREATHE YOUR WAY INTO SPRING Whilst I don’t often write seasonal articles, I think that right now, it is essential to focus on Spring, the season of new beginnings. New life is appearing everywhere, from flowers and leaves to lambs and calves, and whilst this is a literal fact, I think that a metaphorical new beginning would be just as welcome right now. Since March 2020 the world has been challenged by the presence of COVID-19, and I have seen many more clients with anxiety, insomnia and depression than ever before. Yes, I appreciate it has not ‘gone away’, but life in the UK has very recently, largely returned to normal, which is something to be grateful for. Of course, whilst I write this hopeful article about new beginnings, I am acutely aware of the devastating current situation in the Ukraine, and of the many other global crisis situations we don’t see, hear or read about as much as we should. I am not suggesting we pretend these aren’t happening, but I am suggesting that to optimise our own personal situations we allow ourselves to look within and focus on gratitude and hope. We can send our most sincere thoughts and prayers for these situations to improve and also as much charitable support as we can afford, but we must allow ourselves to live each day of our own lives with gratitude, hope and optimism and not guilt for the privileges of peace and (relative!) economic stability and prosperity that we are blessed with on our shores. Back To The Title… I suggest we “Breathe” into spring, simply because breathing is the most fundamental act of existence. It is pivotal in every human act from mindfulness to sprinting, and yet it is something we almost entirely overlook in the context of our health. It is a unique process, as it is the only one which is both unconscious (you breathe 100% of the time, you don’t need to remember to do it) and conscious, you can hold your breath or alter your breathing rate at will (subject to your nervous system intervening if you try anything silly). What this means is that by consciously targeting and improving our breathing technique regularly, we will experience huge physical and mental benefits in the long term as the neuromuscular preparation and positive postural changes result in more effective unconscious breathing.

32 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2022

How do I Improve my Breathing? Well, there are many ways, but here is a simple and effective breathing technique to try: 1) Sit comfortably and relax. (This can also be done standing up). 2) Straighten your posture and take as much air as you can into your body, drawing it down deliberately into your stomach area. Use your diaphragm muscles consciously to maximise the air intake. Visualise your stomach ballooning outwards and the internal sheath of diaphragm muscle pulling downwards, to increase the capacity of the thorax. 3) Hold the deep breath for one or two seconds, then, as you breathe out, try to ensure the outward breath is steady and controlled. If possible, make it slightly longer than the inward breath. Do this a few times. 4) Next, as you breathe in, try to expand your chest, lifting your ribcage and pulling back your shoulders. Again, hold the air for a couple of seconds before a controlled outward breath. Do this a few times also. 5) Finally, I want you to experiment with the back muscles in aiding deeper breathing. Imagine as you breathe that you draw the air deeply into your back, pulling your ribs backwards with your muscles, forcing more and more air in until you can inhale no more, then hold and exhale. 6) Now simply move between the 3 different methods for a few minutes and you will soon have significantly elevated your blood oxygen level and improved your balance of stress and relaxation hormones. To experience maximal physical and mental health benefits, I recommend that you do this exercise every day. Whilst doing it, I encourage you to reflect mindfully on your own situation, allowing in gratitude, hope and optimism (as well as plenty of oxygen) as you embrace the future.

MAKING TAX DIGITAL

H

– plugging the £35bn tax gap

MRC know that the majority of taxpayers want to get their tax right, but the government estimates that many find this hard to do and as a result they are short changed by a simply staggering £35bn or so annually. With this in mind, HMRC’s ambition is to become one of the most digitally advanced tax administrations in the world, which will offer the benefits of making tax administration more effective, more efficient and easier for the taxpayer to get their tax right. It requires businesses to use an entirely digital system for the storage of their accounting records and it also requires that businesses and some individuals use MTD compliant software. This is the future of tax administration in this country with the first round of changes aimed at VAT. Since April 2019 all VAT Registered entities with a turnover higher than the £85,000 VAT threshold had to start submitting their VAT Returns through compliant software. This change felt like an upheaval because business owners were obliged to change their method of calculating and submitting VAT returns. Of course there are plenty of MTD compliant cloud-based software packages available, but they each come with an annual licence fee and a steep learning curve. I’ve written before though that once the migration has been made to cloud-based accounting there are some opportunities for real time saving and efficiencies to be introduced. The next step on the MTD journey is 1st April 2022, when all VAT-registered businesses must join MTD. This step captures all of the entities with a turnover below £85,000 that had ducked below the parapet for the past two years. HMRC’s portal for accepting VAT Returns will be closing and everyone must seek MTD compliant software. Two years from now, from 6 April 2024, MTD for Income Tax Self-Assessment (ITSA) commences

for the self employed and landlords with an annual personal income of over £10,000. These individuals will no longer have to submit a self-assessment tax return in respect of their earned income. The annual requirement will become a quarterly one which will be rounded off with a final reckoning called an End of Period Statement. All paperwork and invoices must be maintained within a digital system under this new regime. MTD for partnerships is slated to commence from April 2025, with MTD for corporation tax estimated to emerge the following April, (there could be a staged roll-out according to profit or sales levels, but as yet this is not clear). This means that in the years ahead all businesses will be required to store all accounting records digitally and will have to submit quarterly profit returns with a final end-of-year return to capture and reconcile what has been reported previously. These changes are huge but are intended to make sure that we get our tax right and at the same time find the process to bring efficiencies. There’s a lot of uncertainty about the accuracy levels of the quarterly submissions when an endof-year report will also be filed, but fuller details will emerge over time. What is clear is the fact that manual bookkeeping and lovingly written-up cash books will very soon be things of the past. Make sure to contact your accountant to better understand how MTD is going to change your business in the years ahead.

Lets make a bucket hat for the warm weather! for all ages. 1 Take the measurement of the crown, that’s the measurement around the head. Add 2cm for comfort this includes a seam allowance. This is the circumference of the top of your hat, and you will need to draw a circle on your pattern paper - see the next step. 2 Use a home made compass to draw your circle. Attach a length of string to a drawing pin and a pencil at each end. The length of the string (after you’ve tied it to the pencil and pin) is worked out below. Length of String (Radius) = Crown Length (circumference of the head) ÷ 6.28 3 Now to draw the side of the hat onto your paper. A rectangle which measures half of the head circumference by 10cm. I suggest a 10cm height for an adult but you can change this to suit. 4 The brim is wider than the crown, so grab the side piece and fold into 4 along the length. Unfold and cut the creases from one side to almost all the way across to the other side. Tape the uncut side onto another piece of paper and create a slight curve by spreading open the cut side by 1/4” apart. This rectangle becomes a slight arc. The longer side (Brim Length) joins the brim. 5 Cut another rectangle for the brim, 10cm wide, Brim Length long. Repeat the process of spreading to create a round curve, only this time fold this piece 4 times to create 8 creases. Cut along the creases from one side to almost all the way to the other. This is called slashing. 6 Spread this second piece onto another piece of paper. Spread the pieces 1/4” apart and tape them down to create the brim. 7 You should have ; one circle, the side (body) and the brim. Select a strong, sturdy fabric, such as canvas or drill, or use interfacing.

36 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2022

8 From the fabric, cut 2 circles, 4 side panels and 4 brims 9 Sew 2 side panels together, along the narrow sides to create the round. 10 Sew the circle to the body of the hat. The shorter side will fit the circle, and you will have a cap. 11 Repeat to make the second cap. You may have chosen to interface these pieces. 12 Turn one cap inside out and tuck into the other cap, so all seams are hidden. Sew these together, you can use decorative stitching. 13 Join 2 brim pieces along the narrow sides to create the full brim . Repeat for the second pair of (interfaced) brim pieces. Place once brim on the other, so the seams are facing out. Pin the wider side together and sew along the edge. 14 Clip the seam allowance and turn the brim through and press so you have all the seams hidden inside. 15 Sew the brim to the cap. Trim the excess seam allowance and hide the raw edge inside the hat and top stitch all the way around, or you can add bias tape to hide the raw edge. You should have yourself a lovely new bucket hat for the summer! Try patchwork. You can watch how to make this on my YouTube channel. If you’re on Instagram, why not tag me in to share your makes. See you in the next issue! Abi x

How Pilates Benefits Runners

R

unning is a very high impact sport which places the joints under a lot of stress. It is a great exercise for improved cardiovascular fitness, but when practiced alone, especially in high volumes running can quickly take its toll on the body and niggles and injuries may start to appear. Pilates is an excellent choice of complimentary training for a runner as it’s low impact so will not place the body under further stress while strengthening the important core stabilizing muscles and help maintain good biomechanics under fatigue. Over time Pilates exercises can help by activating the lazy muscles that haven’t been doing their bit, lengthening the tight muscles and creating better, more aligned movement. Whilst running your body endures constant impact – the force of each step travels up from the legs to the lower back and rib cage. The core strength that is acquired through Pilates exercises not only helps make those vulnerable areas better able to deal with the impact, it also improves body alignment and balance and will help you distribute the force of running throughout the body more efficiently. For both injured and non-injured runners, Pilates presents a functional workout routine that incorporates many components of physical therapy and strengthening and directly impacts running form and strength. One of the differences that sets Pilates apart from other rehabilitative regimens for injured runners is that it supports and strengthens the whole body instead of just the injured part. What is Pilates? Pilates is designed to strengthen the body without creating any muscular imbalances, with a particular focus on core strength and aiming to improve general fitness. As well as developing core strength, Pilates focuses on flexibility, muscular endurance, co-ordination, balance and posture. Pilates is a low impact form of exercise which focuses on form and controlled movement.

40 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2022

What are the benefits of Pilates for runners? There are many benefits of Pilates for runners since the fundamentals emphasize balance, mobility and breathing, while strengthening the core muscles that support running. Breathing patterns and body mechanics are essential to performing Pilates movements correctly, which easily translate into a runner’s breathing patterns and posture to improve form and efficiency. A stronger and more stable core helps a runner: Run more efficiently uphill Experience less tightening of the neck, head and shoulders Increase stamina Focus on proper movement with better body awareness Decrease fatigue because of less strain on the body Move more efficiently Run without pain If you thought core strengthening is the only benefit you will reap from Pilates practice then think again because it may even improve your running performance!

A MYRIAD OF TREATMENTS TO CREATE THE PERFECT SMILE! This case is the perfect example of how we combine treatments to create the perfect smile transformation. This patient had multiple issues and was unhappy with their smile for a number of reasons. This made it a complex case, and one which needed thorough discussion with the patient beforehand, followed by a detailed treatment plan. We decided to combine orthodontic treatment with veneers and whitening to give the patient the smile they’d always dreamed of. Firstly, the patient wore upper and lower fixed braces for two years to bring all his teeth into line. Following this, he had two teeth removed due to severe over crowding. Then, we placed four veneers on the top teeth to balance the patient’s smile and make the teeth look more evenly sized. We then finished with complimentary whitening to give his smile the final glow. All of our orthodontic treatments come with free whitening so why not book in today to get a 2-in-1 treatment? Alternatively, we offer many treatments to suit your individual needs, and work with our patients every step of the way to ensure they get the perfect smile they’ve always dreamed of. If you would like to know about which options may be available to you, please give us a call. Or, if you’d like further information about any of our treatments please call 0161-486-0743 to book in for a free, non-obligation consultation with one of our smile advisors.
