Editor's Message What's up Key Club?

It's me again, your editor! As of writing this it’s been about four months since the new service year started and while I’m so proud of what we’ve all accomplished, can you believe a third of the service year is already over?

With the guidance of great people like our Kiwanis representative, our Lieutenant Governor (who was the president of our club last service year), and others, the board hopes to make this service year as great as possible for all our members. We've been working hard finding events, planning fundraisers (including one with LaGuardia Key Club!), and more. And now that it’s summer, I hope you guys have been keeping the Key Club spirit and volunteering!

But whether you’ve been busy all summer or relaxing, I hope you can take a couple minutes of your time to read this newsletter. Making this might have been a lot of work, but I just can’t wait to get started with the next one. See you soon!

INFORMATION Why volunteer? From building bridges and collecting tons of food to cleaning up local parks, Key Club members dedicate their energy to serving their communities. By participating in enriching service projects such as these, Key Club members ensure the world is a better place for future generations.

Why attend fundraisers? HSMSE Key Club and other Key Clubs hold fundraisers to raise money for charities, such as Lyme Disease and Honey Bee Conservancy. Proceeds also go to the home club for club and division purposes such as LTC, our annual Leadership Training Conference in Albany.

What is a service project? A service project is a charity chosen each service year by clubs and divisions to donate some of the money earned from fundraisers to. For the 2018-2019 service year, HSMSE's service project, Best Buddies, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending the isolation of people with disabilities.

Points System Points are assigned for your work in Key Club. You can get points by doing things like going to meetings, divisionals, and events, and helping out in committees. For every 10 points you earn, it counts as one hour for volunteering. Be sure to pay the dues (either online or in person when school starts). If you don't pay, then we cannot keep track of your points!

The Unite for Bleeding Disorders Walk brings awareness to disorders such as hemophilia. By the time I came to the event, they were setting up tents and tables. I was temporarily assigned to cover the tables with plastic sheets. After more volunteers showed up, I was then assigned to the food station. At the food station I was filling large containers with water and ice. I stayed at this station for most of the time. A lot of kids were excited when they saw the rainbow bagels. At the end, we realized we overstocked in refreshment so we also gave those away. At the end everyone had pizza and started cleaning up. This event went pretty successful in my opinion and I would definitely come again next year.

NIGHT NATION RUN 12

Night Nation Run is unique because it combines a nighttime music festival with running. Although we came there pretty late due to all the runners hogging up the buses, we ran to the event because we were looking forward to helping as well as the EDM that was playing.

We approached Aviatior Center, and immediately you could hear the music playing and see people having fun wearing glow up bracelets and necklaces. Unfortunately, the crowd at the bus station made us unable to help dispense water to the runners, but we did enjoy the festival and afterparty. Many people danced and sung along to the songs, and they took pictures at the selfie station. The atmosphere was really nice, and we went to Aviation Center nearby the concert for some fun.

HSMSE's Third Annual

Barbecue Fundraiser

16

17

On June 22, HSMSE hosted the third annual BBQ at Roosevelt Island. We raised about $600 for Best Buddies International, an organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Our amazing members, and even members of other clubs, donated burgers, hot dogs, drinks, and so much more. Everyone was welcome to play sports or just chill out. We also sold water balloons to raise money so people could cool down. Someone even bought $60 worth of water balloons!

It was great seeing over 100 people, from different divisions and schools, having a good time and just relaxing after a hard year of school. Watching everybody have fun made the hard work of planning the BBQ worth it. Advertising the event and personally messaging people was nothing compared to the smile and laughter that we shared together.

THANK YOU to everyone in Fundraising Committee, everyone who donated food, and everyone who came for helping to make this event possible!

We raised $643.66!

The Epic Ride was on July 21. Our club was assigned to work at the first rest stop, which was in Owl’s Head Park, in Bay Ridge. I showed up at 7 and I helped set up the entrance signs. When the bikers started coming in, I was cheering them on with other volunteers. We were holding up signs and I even got to yell into a bullhorn! It was so much fun encouraging all the bikers and seeing the smiles on their face as they were reaching the rest stop.

Looking back, I’m really glad I went to this event since I got to see other people from Stuy and Francis Lewis. It was nice meeting other Key Clubbers that I’ve never really talked to before and getting to know them.
