 Editor's Message Hey Key Club!

My name's Angelo Lontok and I'm the new Bulletin Editor for the 2018-2019 service year. I'm so excited to be working with all of you and continue making awesome newsletters for the club!

These past few months have been huge. This new service year began in late March, meaning that we had to say our goodbyes to the old board, but also welcome in the new! We hope that we can continue HSMSE Key Club's awesome legacy and even improve on the past. We're continuing some major events, such as our annual BBQ Fundraiser, but we're also making some huge changes such as revamping the committee system. Overall we just hope that this service year can be great for everyone involved, and not just for the board, but also for you, the members!

I really enjoyed making this newsletter and I can't wait to publish the next one. See you soon!

Angelo Lontok

Leadership Training Conference

one of the best experiences of my life. Honestly, I didn’t expect to come out so inspired to do more for Key Club. Leading up to LTC, I was a little nervous being the only freshman. I didn’t really know the upperclassmen that I was going with or what to expect. I didn’t even know if I was going to end up liking it. However, as the trip went on, I ended up absorbing a lot of useful information about the club. The hotel itself there was almost straight out of a dream. Lots of bonding happened with people I came with and people I won’t see for a while, if ever. And while I was nowhere near the loudest or most energetic, I can assure you that it has been one of the best experiences of my life.

I can't wait to see what the new service year holds! The Leadership Training Conference in Albany is a celebration for the end of the past service year and the marking of a new service year. Key Clubbers from all over New York State gathered in the Desmond Hotel to celebrate the 2017-2018 service year and to celebrate Key Club International’s 70th Birthday! We attended workshops to build our leadership skills, to learn about Key Club history and have fun. We also attended Playfair, participated in fun icebreakers and meet new friends. We had an awesome Keynote speaker, Saul Flores, who shared his story and his journey from South America to the United States. The awards ceremonies were always fun to watch with all the clubs winning awards for their service. I can’t wait to see what the new service year holds for New York District Key Clubs!

NYSoM Easter Eggstravaganza

The 2018 NYSoM Easter Eggstravaganza took place in the East Harlem Community Garden from 12 to 4 on March 31. Â Volunteers came in from 10 in order to prepare the gardens that had to be prepped for various events for the kids. The event was so big that they had to shut down the street so that there was no traffic, to make space for activities such as photos with the Easter Bunny and Sauce tasting. For each of the gardens, kids and family had to form a line in order to take part in the activities. In the first garden we had egg and sack racing, pictures with the Easter Bunny, and popcorn. Anyone in the egg and sack racing won an Easter egg with chocolate balls inside. The second garden held the main event, egg hunting. The third garden had egg painting. Across the street was face painting and edible cookie decorating in the fourth garden. You also got to interact with Bugs Bunny who was lurking around for the cookies.

Even though I didn't do the walk like many of the other volunteers, I am glad I was able to show my support. On April 14th, HSMSE Key Club volunteered at the 12th annual Vision Walk at the Central Park Bandshell. We were able to meet up with Key Clubbers from other schools and division that came together. The Vision Walk is a fundraising event of the Foundation Fighting Blindness. They are working to find treatments and cures for retinal diseases which can make a person blind, having raised over $45 million already to fund research. As volunteers we started off at the amphitheater setting up the different tents. There was the refreshment table where we set up some snacks, different types of bagels, and coffee for the people coming. Most of the Key Clubbers to show their support even got temporary Vision Walk Tattoos at the fun zone which Key Clubbers were in charge of. The fun zone included face painting, tic tac toe toes, and a Frisbee game. We even set up bags which were meant to give awareness to people in case there is an emergency. Once we finished setting up we took the time to meet other Key Clubbers as well as other volunteers who came to volunteer that aren’t from Key Club. As time passed walkers and teams for the Vision Walk were starting to arrive and register. At this point for volunteers who weren’t at a tent went spread out along the course in order to direct the walkers. At our spots we gave our support to the walkers by cheering them on, thanking them for their support and taking a piece of their time to come to this event. Once everyone finished the walk we started dancing to the music to get everyone excited and into the event. After that we cleaned up and help pack away everything. Even though I didn’t do the walk like many of the other volunteers, I am glad I was able to show my support to the Foundation Fighting Blindness by giving energy and my appreciation to the walkers through my cheering.

March of Dimes March for Babies

It was very satisfying looking at the miles left to go signs. It gives a sense of accomplishment and reminds you what you're walking for.

March of Dimes is our first divisional event of the service year. This event is extremely important to me because it helps spread awareness of premature birth. There are many cases that occur, and I believe that every baby should live a normal life. When getting off the train station, I immediately saw a huge crowd of excited people singing, dancing, and bumping beach balls. The site was decorated with purple and white balloons, along with many tents on the sidewalk. During the pre-walk, everyone walked around taking many snacks and meeting up with our other fellow Key Clubbers. It was a great way to bond and meet new people. When the walk started, we all cheered for our division and met some new friends along the way. Dancers and drummers were cheering while we walked. It was a very relaxing walk; there were many people to talk to and it was very satisfying looking at the miles left to go signs. It gives a sense of accomplishment and reminds you what you're walking for. After walking the 3 miles, I felt more energetic. There was a post-walk party celebrating our passion and motivation to help spread awareness of premature birth and we all took pictures celebrating our memories and accomplishments. It was really fun supporting this cause and interacting with others, and I would definitely attend next year!

Japan Day

At Japan Day, there's multiple fun events that celebrate Japanese culture, open to everyone in the heart of New York, Central Park, such as yo-yo fishing, sword fighting demonstrations, teas, and music. It was up to the volunteers to spread the word about the free event and give people flyers about the event to convince them to come. Multiple volunteers were stationed in and around the park to convince people passing by to stop by the event in Central Park and enjoy and experience Japanese culture for free. Halfway through the shift all volunteers switched places around the park. During the shifts volunteers did all they could to convince the most people to take some time out of their schedule to pass by the event by spreading out information about Japan Day.

Peter Yapp Junior Shift 1 Japan Day was an amazing experience for us, and would be one we wouldn’t forget in a while. Shift 2 began with a meet up with some of the Shift 1 kids, and once that happened, we were sent to work. All of us went to hand out flyers, and we split up into smaller groups. Even though we didn't get to hand out that many, we were free to explore the culture, and explore we did. There were many games and activities related to and originating from Japan that took place there, and there were even some performances. The last performance before 4 PM was by Puffy AmiYumi, famous for performing the theme song for Teen Titans. Overall, we would all recommend for as many people to go next year as possible.

Passport to Taiwan

Passport to Taiwan is a two day event, encompassing prep work and setting up the festival. On Saturday, I came to the event, and I immediately saw people working on drying cilantro and spinach. I went inside to wash my hands, and I smelled lots of Taiwanese food, like sausages and noodles. I went outside to dry the herbs and noticed some new faces; they were also Key Club members from various schools and divisions. After we finished drying the herbs, everyone took a short break and got to know each other. We even got snow cones as a treat! We then started putting our prepared food into boxes. We loaded all the food and beverages into a truck which contained all the supplies needed for the day after. Although there are a lot of stuff that needed to be done, we worked really efficiently, while learning some Taiwanese culture and meeting some new friends along the way!

William Leung Sophomore Saturday Shift Passport to Taiwan, in Union Square Park, is a program that brings Taiwanese culture to the city. On Sunday morning, we had to set up tents for different stations and unload trucks. As stations were being set up, the amazing smell of food started to set in. Some of our sister clubs from D11 helped in the process of cooking. Each station was very unique in its own way as they brought out different products and foods of Taiwan. There was even a stage where Taiwanese artists could perform, but since it was raining hard that day, the seats had gotten wet. We then cleaned the seats with paper towels. Some of us started handing out pamphlets with information about the event. It was fun and all and at the end of the day, I would definitely come back to this event next year.

Photo Booth Fundraiser On May 15th, our club hosted the Photo Booth Fundraiser, our first mini-fundraiser! Our visual arts committee co-heads, Hassaan and Laura, helped design the frames. After our meeting, people paid $1 for their pictures taken. At the end, we raised $10!
