THE DIGITAL DRAGON HSMSE Key Club

March 2019 Volume 2 Issue 8

I pledge, on my honor, to uphold the objects of Key Club International; to build my home, school, and community; to serve my nation and God; and combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions. 2

EDITOR'S MESSAGE HEY KEY CLUB!

As of writing this, Leadership Training Conference is days away, which means two things: we all get to enjoy a fun weekend with other members throughout the entire state, and the 2018-2019 service year is ending! And with the end of the service year, is the end of the current club board's roles. Let's welcome in the upcoming board. I'm sure that they can continue HSMSE Key Club's thriving presence, and even improve on that!

Finishing this newsletter has been bittersweet for me. I'm glad I've been able to do so much as editor, but writing this in the middle of the night, knowing that this is my last ever club newsletter makes me so sad! This year has truly been great. With all its ups and downs, one thing has been constant: the passion that Key Clubbers like you and I all show. Here's to another great year of service! — ANGELO LONTOK

Greetings and Farewells

As one door closes, another door opens.

The 2018-2019 board is so grateful to have served HSMSE Key Club, but as the service year comes to an end, we must pass on our roles to the next board. Best of wishes to the 2019-2020 board, and here's to an even better service year than the last!

5

Hey everyone! I'm Will, a junior, and I'm honored to have been your president for the 2018-2019 service year!

Farewell to the 2018-2019

President 6

What are you proud of this service year? I'm so proud that we were able to increase our amount of active members this service year! We all have been able to volunteer together and made great bonds! I'm also glad of my emails and guides I've made, which helped our members get more information more easily and apply for awards. What would you have done differently? I wish I was able to get to know each and everyone of you more closely. What's next for you and key club? I'd want to help out with the division and district, and in the future, be a part of Circle K and Kiwanis. Contact him: 21isolic@gmail.com

Hello everyone! My name is Jack Lehman and I'm very excited to be your president in this upcoming service year! I live in Manhattan, and I enjoy researching economics, playing guitar and reading in my free time. What got you committed to Key Club? I attended the October Divisional immediately after my first Key Club meeting. It seemed so well-maintained and promising that I knew I had to get involved.

WhY did you run for your position?

Interestingly enough, I actually planned on running for treasurer for a while before even considering going for president. I saw that the role I sought to assume as treasurer was actually more of the president's role, so I decided to get ambitious and run for president.

What are your goals for the next service year?

As president and a member of this club, I plan to make Key Club easier for everyone to take part in. This means I would like to find more charities and events and add fun activities to get everyone more excited about service.

Contact him: jacklehman0@gmail.com

Greetings to the 2019-2020

President 7

Hey y'all! My name is Linna Cheung and I'm a Junior! I love to play game and read during my free time. I love eating Japanese, Mexican and Italian food! What are you Proud of this service Year?

I am so proud of the fact that our board was able to keep a lot of members active in the club. What would you have done differently?

I would have told the Visual Arts Committee to work on a traditional scrapbook. What's next for you and Key club? Farewell to the 2018-2019

vice President 8

I'm staying in Key Club and going to events and divisionals! I still have so many people to meet in the division and club! Contact her: lcheung1302@gmail.com

Hello! My name is Karen Wu. I'm currently a junior, and I'm passionate about what I believe in. What got you committed to Key Club?

Every time I helped the club out with a task, I would get such a big feeling of accomplishment. WhY did you run for your position?

I decided that this role would fit my introverted (but slowly changing) nature. I can help the club and still be able to manage school and other extra curricular activities.

What are your goals for the next service year?

My main goal for the next service year is to help the Thirst Project. Contact her: elizabethwu0514@gmail.com

Greetings to the 2019-2020

vice President 9

Hi, my name is Julie Li and I am currently a junior. I enjoy drawing and playing basketball during my free time. What are you Proud of this service Year?

I am proud that we were able to combat all challenges and made it up to this step. What would you have done differently?

I would have better planning and organization. There were many opportunities that I missed because of my lack of planning. What's next for you and Key club? Farewell to the 2018-2019

treasurer 10

I would like to continue as a member of Key Club and continue to give back to our community. Contact her: julie.li3502224@gmail.com

I'm Pratik Yallapragada and I'm an 11th grader. I like to eat Indian food, edit videos, listen to music, and watch cricket. What got you committed to Key Club?

I stayed with Key Club because I found a passion for service. This was due to one particular event that helped kids with deformities. Key Club's also very welcoming and it felt like the right fit.

WhY did you run for your position?

I ran for a position because I feel that I will have more opportunities in serving our community. I know I can definitely handle this position, plus I would like to incorporate new ideas in order to improve HSMSE Key Club as a whole.

What are your goals for the next service year?

I want to hand in all my FRFs on time and get fifteen members or more to pay their dues. I also want to do more inter club fundraisers so we interact more with other clubs.

Contact him: pratik.psoli@gmail.com

Greetings to the 2019-2020

treasurer 11

Hey guys, my name is Mengfan, or Meng. I am a junior and I have been in Key Club since I was a freshman.

Farewell to the 2018-2019

secretary 12

What are you Proud of this service Year? I am really proud of our BBQ Fundraiser and the efforts we put into it as a whole board. I think that is probably my favorite event in key club, and I can't wait for the next BBQ! What would you have done differently? If I could get a time machine, I would definitely attend more events and take more initiative. What's next for you and Key club? I think after my retirement, I will retreat back to being a basic member. I'll definitely participate in more events, and enjoy my last year with Key Club just like I did when I first started. Contact her: mengfanwang724@gmail.com

My name's Aiko Gerra, and I'm a junior at HSMSE. I like to draw, read, and code in my free time. What got you committed to Key Club?

I like the fact that it gets us in the habit of using our time to help others. I hope to join a club like this in college, too. WhY did you run for your position?

I wanted to contribute more to Key Club and the position of secretary matches my personal strengths.

What are your goals for the next service year?

I want to always be punctual and hopefully contribute some good ideas for fundraising. Contact her: alydiagerra@gmail.com

Greetings to the 2019-2020

secretary 13

Hey! My name's Angelo Lontok, your current editor. I'm a junior, and outside of Key Club I like to paint and play the piano! What are you proud of this service year? I'm glad I spent so much time making all these newsletters. From my first to now, I've improved a lot.

What would you have done differently? If I could re-do my time as editor, I'd include more information on divisional, district, and international events. I would've also made monthly newsletters since the beginning, instead of bimonthly.

Farewell to the 2018-2019

editor

What's next for you and key club? I want to continue like helping out Key Club but still connect it to my passions for art. Next year I might want to take a more active role in other visual aspects such as the scrapbook. Contact him: anelonto@gmail.com

My name's Laura Song, and I'm currently a junior at HSMSE. In my free time, I like to paint, take pictures, and watch TV. What got you committed to Key Club? I wasn’t really committed when i first joined in freshman year, but in sophomore year i saw how much fun everyone was having at the events and i decided to commit to the club. WhY did you run for your position? I ran for the position of editor because it was a step up from being a Visual Arts Co-head. I wanted to try something new but still be able to contribute my artistic skills to the club. What are your goals for the next service year? My goal is to be more responsible and have the newsletter ready on time. Contact her: lauraws1234@gmail.com

Hi! My name is Kiln and I am HSMSE Key Club’s current Webmaster. What are you proud of this service year?

This past service year, I have improved and updated our club website with new features and events. What would you have done differently?

One thing I wish I could’ve done personally was attend more events this service year. What's next for you and key club?

Farewell to the 2018-2019

In the upcoming service year, I will be serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Division 11! I am so proud of HSMSE Key Club and I know the next board will do an even better job than us! Contact HER: kilnchen02@gmail.com

Hi! My name is Luis Pagan and I am currently a junior. I love to build machines and play volleyball after school. I also like to play video games (on the PC). What got you committed to Key Club?

I got committed once I found out how much fun an interesting the various volunteering opportunities I attended were. Over time, I got to learn about the role of Key Club and how important it is.

WhY did you run for your position?

I'm good at a lot of tech stuff, including websites. I would also like to change the role the website has on our members, making it both more informative and useful with sacrificing design.

What are your goals for the next service year? I want to remake the HSMSE Key Club website, gather more members, establish dominance, etc.

how does key club work?

CLUB

DISTRICT

Each Key Club is hosted at a different high school. This one, of course, is hosted by HSMSE! Meetings are held every other Tuesday in room 103. Stay tuned for updates in the morning announcements.

The 29 divisions of New York make up New York District Key Club. Each Key Club district is led by a governor and has its own executive board. The governor for the New York district is Erica Swirsky. All the clubs in the district meet up once a year in March at the Leadership Training Conference (LTC) in Albany.

DIVISION The different Key Clubs throughout Manhattan and the Bronx form Division 11. Each division is lead by a Lieutenant Governor and has its own executive board. The LTG for this division is Mara Yella. All the clubs in the division meet up about once a month at a divisional, which is held at a different school each time.

18

Key Club functions like an inverted pyramid, so those in higher positions (such as the members of the International board) work to serve those in lower positions (such as members)!

INTERNATIONAL All the Key Clubs around the world span five different continents and form Key Club International. It is led by International President Emily Rice. Key Club international meets up annually at the International Convention (ICON).

WHAT IS BEST BUDDIES INTERNATIONAL?

Every service year, our club chooses an organization to support, and for the 20182019 service year, we chose Best Buddies International! This nonprofit's goal is to help out those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

HOW DOES BEST BUDDIES HELP OUT THOSE WITH IDD? This organization's 3 Program Pillars are One-to-One Friendships, Integrated Employment, and Leadership Development. Best Buddies creates mentorships and friendships for those with IDD, helping enjoy a better quality

20

of life. In addition, Best Buddies also promotes both people with and without IDD to be advocates for those with IDD, helping reduce societal stigma and gain increased rights.

HOW WILL HSMSE KEY CLUB SUPPORT BEST BUDDIES? It's no secret that our club hosts many fundraisers! While some of them do go to costs of running the club, such as to pay for LTC and making the scrapbook for LTC, we will donate much of our proceeds to Best Buddies, supporting their cause financially.

CARING LEADERSHIP INCLUSIVENESS CHARACTER-BUILDING

How can our club help you? Points are given for your work. You can get points doing things like going to meetings, divisionals, and events, helping out in committees, and more. Every 10 points counts as 1 hour of volunteering. An HSMSEendorsed diploma requires 200 hours of community service — that's 2000 points! Information on our points system can be found on our website. Key Club is more than just hours, though. Being part of the club is great for personal development along our core values: caring, leadership, inclusiveness, and character building!

The Events Committee's duties can be summarized into three topics: events, fundraisers, and outreach. Most importantly, this committee is in charge of finding fun events for everyone in the club to go to. But the committee is also in charge of creating amazing and successful fundraisers that raise money for charities and our clubs, the the assistance of Julie Li, our Treasurer and the rest of the board. You will be reaching out to organizations in order to host fundraisers, and also make forms and post on the Facebook page for members to sign up for events. Pictured to the left are the four committee heads. Contact the Heads:

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts Committee is in charge of making and posting awesome looking posters to persuade people to go to events. The committee is also in charge of making cute Key Club merchandise for club members to buy to bring in money! But most importantly, the biggest part of Visual Arts Committee is making the yearly scrapbook for LTC. The scrapbook showcases the beautiful events of the year, and may even win an award! You will be able to use your imagination and creative juices to make something beautiful that we can all be proud of! Pictured to the right are the three committee heads.

EVENTS OVERVIEW Sign up for these events and many more on the forms posted on either the website or our Facebook group! In the forms, you can also opt to be a project leader. Project leaders are responsible for taking attendance, taking pictures, and writing a scrapbook caption and a newsletter article. There's two committees. Events works to find volunteering events, plan fundraisers, and promote events and fundraisers on Facebook. Visual Arts makes posters to promote our fundraisers and work on our annual scrapbook for LTC. And helping the club helps you too; project leaders and committee heads get extra hours!

24

Please note that Leadership Training Conference (LTC) and Meals on Heels has no form; the deadline for the LTC deposit has already passed and volunteers can show up to Meals on Heels without signing up beforehand.

LADIES FIRST RUN BY: JACK LEHMAN MEMBER

The Ladies First 5 &10K was a significant event in my experience as a Key Club member. It was by far the longest and earliest commute I have ever gone through, and I can't say that it was easy getting up before seven to attend an event, especially on a weekend. Although I arrived at Shore Road Park fairly late I was surprised at how easy the task appeared to be. I tracked down the person I was supposed to check in with and, apologies included, I was soon on my way toward volunteering. He assigned me to a part in the route with a lot of foot traffic but enough space to settle myself in. I was still somewhat flustered from being late and missing the kickoff of the race, but I felt as though I tried my best in the time I contributed to make sure things were running smoothly. The race ended fairly quickly.

After all was said and done, I felt satisfied with my work that day, as it seemed to represent the many dimensions of service reached by our club. 25

26

Leadership Training Conference (LTC) is a big event for the district. Clubs all throughout NYDKC all come every year to the Desmond Hotel in March for a fun weekend of workshops, icebreakers. As it marks the end of one service year and the beginning of the next, you also get to elect your District Governor, Secretary, and Treasurer! International Convention (ICON) is like LTC, but on a bigger scale; instead of a district event, it's an international event! It's an entire week in July, held at a different place every year. There, you get to elect your International Board: the International President and their trustees!
