COMMITTEE UPDATES November marks the second committee cycle of the service year. This means that there's some big changes with the committee system! Instead of having three committees, Events, Fundraising, and Visual Arts, the board has decided to combine the first two; now we just have Events and Visual Arts. We've also decided to change the number of heads: now we have four heads for Events and three for Visual Arts. We hope that these changes can make the club run even more smoothly! EVENTS

This committee is responsible for finding events, planning fundraisers, and posting on Facebook to promote those events and fundraisers. VISUAL ARTS

This committee is responsible for making digital posters that promote our fundraisers and to work on our annual scrapbook for LTC. 5

EVENTS HEADS AARON DAS

Hey guys, it's Aaron! I'm a junior. I've only been a Key Clubber since I was a sophomore, but I hope I can do great as a committee head. I'll be helping out with events and fundraisers. In my free time, I like to play League and listen to music. I hope we can all make this half of the service year even better than the last!

AIKO GERRA

My name's Aiko and I'm a junior. I joined key club in my freshman year, and I was an events committee member during the last service year. I'm taking on my first key club leadership role, so I hope to be a good head during my term. In my free time, I like to read, play Cities: Skylines, and volunteer at my local library!

LUIS PAGAN

Hi! My name's Luis and I am one of the Fundraising heads for this service year. I am extremely glad to be a part of a great club and I hope I can help improve HSMSE Key Club as best as I can. Outside of this club, I'm part of the HSMSE volleyball team, which helped me grow as a team player. This service year will be a great one, and I hope I can be a great head too!

KAREN WU

Hey y’all! I'm Karen Wu. I was a committee head last cycle and I'm back again. This time, not only will I help with events, but also with fundraisers (wish me the best!) I'm currently a junior and also the president of East Asian Student Association. I really enjoy watching Chinese dramas (I admit I am addicted) and making art. I hope we'll make Key Club fun and enjoyable for you guys! 6

I’m sure we will have an awesome service year!

Hey guys! It’s Hassaan! I am a senior at HSMSE. I love going to Starbucks! My speciality in art ranges from portraits sketches to portrait drawings. As a Visual Arts Committee Head, I will work toward getting the Scrapbook and Poster award for our Key Club. I hope that this year will be fun for everyone!

WHAT IS BEST BUDDIES

HOW WILL HSMSE KEY CLUB SUPPORT BEST BUDDIES?

INTERNATIONAL?

It's no secret that our club hosts many fundraisers! While some of them do go to costs of running the club, such as to pay for LTC and making the scrapbook for LTC, we will donate much of our proceeds to Best Buddies, supporting their cause financially.

Every service year, our club chooses an organization to support, and for the 2018-2019 service year, we chose Best Buddies International! This nonprofit's goal is to help out those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), from people with Down syndrome, autism, brain injuries, and other disabilities.

HOW DOES BEST BUDDIES HELP OUT THOSE WITH IDD? This organization's 3 Program Pillars are One-to-One Friendships, Integrated Employment, and Leadership Development. Best Buddies creates mentorships and friendships for those with IDD, helping enjoy a better quality of life. In addition, Best Buddies also

POINTS

Points are assigned for your work in HSMSE Key Club. You can get points by doing things like going to meetings, divisionals, and events, helping out in committees, and more.

SYSTEM

Every 10 points you earn counts as one hour of volunteering.

Be sure to pay the $15 dues for the service year. If you don't, then we can't keep track of your points!

You take initiative.

BEING A PROJECT

Key Club's four core values are caring, leadership, inclusiveness, and character building. By being a project leader, you get to showcase all of these values. Anyone can be a project leader - even new members!

LEADER

It helps the club. Through the work of project leaders, our club is able to record volunteer hours and work on our annual scrapbook and bimonthly newsletters.

What you do Project leaders are important to helping Key Club run behind the scenes! Each event can have a different project leader. They're responsible for taking attendance, taking pictures, writing both a scrapbook caption and a newsletter article, and filling out a google form.

It helps you. You gain leadership experience from this, and you earn two extra hours of community service!. 11

Through the hard work of the board and Visual Arts Committee, we had more than 50 signups!

Club Fair is an important event, as it's a way for our club to showcase who we are to the school and get a lot of new members! The board has been doing some planning since late August, a full month before the actual event, but it was all worth it in the end. It was so nice seeing mostly new freshmen, but even other grades showing a lot of interest in our club. Much like last year and the years after that, we got a lot of signups - more than 50 people! After all our hard work, much of the people who were helping out for our club went outside to the quad to relax with other students and eat some pizza, thanks to the people in Leadership elective! STEP OUT WALK TO STOP DIABETES The walk was by the Hudson River, from Pier 84 to 62 and back. HSMSE had a later shift so we weren't there to set up, but we were able to help clean up. As the last walkers were finishing up the trip, Linna and I walked along the path to peel off stickers from the ground and carry signs back to to start, with the help of Key Clubbers from other schools! CaringKind Alzheimer's Walk Alzheimer’s has always been something of interest to me. I had heard of a few of my late relatives who had been struggling from the disease and their struggles with coping. Though it has yet to hit me or anyone I’m close to (fingers crossed!), I’m still very eager to support those struggling & raise awareness for their bravery.

Starting around 8:30 o’clock on a chilly morning, I directed people to 96th street. About an hour later, I headed over to the walk itself, assigned to cheer on people as they walked. It was very special to see a very diverse group of 500+ people gathering towards a common goal, something I feel speaks to us New Yorkers more than most others.

small group raised their hands. We all clapped for them and the walk began. The volunteers cheered people on as they crossed the starting line. The smiles were almost contagious from those walking to the people rooting for them from the side. Our turnout was powerful not only in numbers, but also in the sheer optimism that we gave off.

On the main platform, there was a WABC journalist talking about his experience and his family's struggles with Alzheimer's. He ended his talk by asking who in the crowd was caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, which yielded many hands. After, he asked if anyone had Alzheimer’s, and a

The walk itself lasted about an hour. As things winded down, we took down tables and collected trash. I felt proud of my work and support, and relieved at the many others striving for a better medical future for those in need. Jack Lehman Freshman 19

MAKING STRIDES AGAINST

BREAST CANCER The breast cancer walk was very cold, but a lot of fun to attend! We got there early and met up with other club members from the division. Some of our members wore pink to show their support. In addition, some people donated to support the cause. We took a group picture with the division, and walked to the starting line. The walk was long and slow, but it was a good experience as we shared laughs and watched videos, while being supported along the way. At the end, we ended up donating 19 dollars! Ben Hatch Senior 20

This walk was a divisional event, so other Key Clubs throughout Manhattan and the Bronx came too. I'd recommend going to walks like these - it's a nice way to get to know new people, not just from HSMSE, but from other clubs too!

registering, I saw different areas that needed help: the promise garden, the photo booth, the fun zone, and some other areas. We volunteered with NYC Young Professional Kiwanis. There were also many other Key Clubs and organizations helping out too.

WALK TO END ALZHEIMER'S On a really rainy Saturday, I went to Pier 17 with my friend to help out support Walk to End Alzheimer’s. We were drenched after our umbrella broke. It was all worth it at the end; as soon as I got to the event, we got to see a fully decorated dock with streaks of purple and neon electronic panels. The walk was moved because of the rain, but the various booths were still running. After

We supported the cause by giving flowers that symbolized people’s relation to Alzheimer’s, whether it was caring for family who has Alzheimer’s, or someone who lost their life from Alzheimer’s. There was a motivational speech and party afterwards, and it was beautiful seeing everyone walk with their flowers. William Leung President 21

Key Club Week

#KeyClubWeek is one of the best weeks in the year (right after LTC of course)! From November 5th to the 9th, Key Clubbers from around the world celebrated what Key Club is truly about: service. Everyday of the week highlights the key aspects of Key Club. HSMSE Key Club did a lot to promote our love and passion for Key Club! William Leung President

fall rally

Like LTC in March, Fall Rally is a great way to meet Key Clubbers from other schools and learn new things through workshops - but on a smaller scale!

Fall Rally is a one-day convention where Key Clubbers from different divisions gather to learn more about Key Club and attend fun, useful and informational workshops.

bracelets, and then I went to one about running for higher office.

This year, Fall Rally was held at LIU Brooklyn and Divisions 8-13 were in attendance. The convention started off with an opening session where the Lieutenant Governors of each division greeted welcomed Key Clubbers to Fall Rally. Afterwards, we had 2 workshops sessions. The first set of workshops were fun and creative workshops. The second set of workshops were training and informational workshops to help build leadership skills, such as workshops for board positions. The first workshop I went to was about making friendship

Then we had K-Fair and lunch. This year, instead of having everyone in one big cafeteria, we had a number assigned to us and the number corresponded to a room. This allowed us to mingle and meet Key Clubbers from all divisions. It was so fun talking to new people and getting to know them through icebreakers! After K-Fair and lunch, we attended our final workshop session of the conventionI went to one about maintaining a personal brand. Then, we had a Keynote Speaker from the Thirst Project (Text “BUMBLEBEE to 97779 to get involved and learn more about the Thirst Project). Lastly the convention ended with the closing session - it was great! Kiln Chen Webmaster 25

I had lots of fun seeing everyone, and I learned a lot from the workshops. Thank you to the LTGs and everyone who planned Fall Rally! It was a big success and great experience! Kiln Chen
