Dear Colleagues, Hello and welcome to the very first Anglo Arabian Healthcare Newsletter.

This is a publication that we will issue three times a year and it will keep you informed of our progress as a company as well as celebrate our people. I hope you enjoy this edition and if you have ideas for improvement or wish to see new areas covered, please drop me an email or write to our Editor, Julie Adams.

After a year of planning in 2012, it was great to start 2013 with a series of new partnerships that has put AAH firmly on the map and significantly increased the size of our family.

Our vision is to work with leaders in healthcare across the GCC to create an integrated healthcare group that could have the size and necessary facilities to meet the needs of patients, insurers and employers in the future.

We started with Mohammed Bahani of Proficiency Central Laboratory (PCL), Abu Dhabi and his team of over sixty people, joining AAH and bringing world-class diagnostics to our group. PCL also has a branch in Sharjah led by Dr. Jihad Sadeh whom I have had the pleasure of working with before. We are working closely with Mohammed and Jihad to develop and expand the diagnostic group across the UAE and we will shortly rebrand as PhD Diagnostics (Proficiency Healthcare Diagnostics).

Following on quickly from PCL, we joined hands with Dr. Maya and Dr. Mahesh with the Sharjah Corniche Hospital group. Sharjah Corniche is a great small hospital with an excellent team and the group consists of a further two clinics in Sharjah and one laboratory in Ras Al Khaimer. We are now busy working with the team to consider expanding and developing this business even further.

Finally we celebrated our partnership in June with Dr. Gafoor and Dr. Shinu in Ajman with their four clinics, five pharmacies and a fabulous new Amina Hospital that will open early in 2014. Along with some great clinical assets, we have also partnered with the IbinSina Post Graduate Training programme where over 2000 delegates attend CME accredited educational seminars four times a year. We will aim to take this established educational facility across the UAE with the support of Dr. Gafoor and his colleague Dr. Jacob.

With all of our new partners in place, we are looking at building the Anglo Arabian Healthcare business into a respected healthcare group with our three operational brands being recognized for quality, care and compassion and identified as PhD diagnostics or our two healthcare brands; Mandala Clinics or Amina Hospitals.

As of today we have a team of nearly 400 people and with the new Amina hospital, this will increase to over 600 next year. We are now working on our second phase of growth and this is likely to see many new colleagues join us next year and hopefully to give us the scale to influence insurers and to work with regulators to create a health system in the UAE that our patients can be proud of.

As our history is from small entrepreneurial businesses joining together for the benefit of our patients, we must never lose sight of our heritage or our commitment to our people.

As mentioned on the evenings where I had the privilege to meet many of you and AAH was introduced to you, we will each year hold a Founders Day, where we will celebrate our success, reward and recognize our high achievers and hopefully have some fun too.

Anglo Arabian Healthcare Head Office: Open for Business!

It was a momentous occasion as well as a very happy day when the AAH Head Office officially opened for business on the 9th of July 2013, the day before the Holy Month of Ramadan commenced.

The project to fit out an empty office space in Dubai Healthcare City was exciting, but took much longer than expected to occupy due to unforeseen delays in licensing and approvals. We were determined to be at our desks and operational before the Holy Month of Ramadan began and set ourselves a very hard task. However, with determination and resolve, the day finally came when we were able to come together as one team under one roof, and really feel the benefit of this. With all the team now together, safe and sound at their new desks, the delays and frustrations were long forgotten and it was generally agreed that the wait was well worth it. There certainly were a lot of happy, smiling faces the day we took occupancy of the very first Anglo Arabian Head Office in Dubai Healthcare City.

We are delighted to be partnered with the rich experience of AAH in the healthcare sector, which helps develop a better synergy in raising the status of the group into one of the most sought-after quality healthcare in the Northern Emirates. Our background has enabled us to have a thorough understanding of the healthcare needs of a multicultural society, and we do this by not only working as a family, but by considering everyone of our customers as our greater family.

We are glad to announce our other ventures in India such as Crowning Glory Dental Spa, near Trivandrum Medical College, Kerala which has completed 2 successful years and Woodlem Park Public School which is spread over a six acre campus in a calm and serene setting, in a tranquil village in Kerala which has started accepting pupils from 2013 onwards.

“Success is a journey, not a destination” A simple statement that lead to the beginnings of Proficiency Central Laboratories LLC, Abu Dhabi.

I

t all started on October 2010 when Dr. Mohamad Bahani and Dr. Mohamad Ali Salem decided to start an independent medical laboratory at the heart of the city of Abu Dhabi to cater the needs of the community for a quality laboratory service provider.

PCL is a fully equipped advance lab performing a wide range of clinical laboratory investigations in house. Its vision is ‘To be the regional leader in clinical lab testing with the highest quality standards for services provided to all patients and healthcare providers’ and the reason behind being the first private independent laboratory in the capital to be internationally accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) for a very short operation period of 8 months. PCL is committed to excellent quality lab testing and CAP Accreditation did not stop them from aiming a step higher, the management team decided to go for ISO 15189:2007 Accreditation and after less than two years of operation the accreditation was granted to PCL. PCL started to perform 400 lab testing in house and receiving 50 samples per day and increased more than what is expected in few months and currently receiving an average of 800 samples per day and having a list of more than 600 tests performed in house. Originally, two people with a vision started working for PCL and now PCL is a family of more than 60 staff. The growth of PCL in all aspects of work exceeded the expectations of its founder and management and this required a lot of investment and efforts from the whole team.

Considering the unexpected development and success of PCL as a reference lab in Abu Dhabi, the management went into partnership with Anglo Arabian Healthcare (AAH) on the second quarter of 2013 to enable them to move forward and achieve their vision of becoming a regional leader not just in lab testing but with radiology department.

AAH established its brands of different healthcare providers under one umbrella and PCL is one of them under PHDProficiency Healthcare Diagnostics which will cover both laboratory and radiology testing. AAH and PCL partnership open new doors for better opportunities. The first major achievement of PCL- AAH team is the expansion into two new additional offices in the main branch in Abu Dhabi, one for the Administration staff and one for the Procurement Department and a Storage Room that aims to provide a better working environment for all the staff at the same time, enabling the technical expansion of PCL. Proficiency Central Laboratories LLC (PCL) started as a small dream and now it is a growing reality under Proficiency Healthcare Diagnostics (PHD) and Anglo Arabian Healthcare.

The Amina Hospital, Ajman Project Update Building a brand new hospital in the heart of Ajman is one of the most important and exciting projects that the AAH team has undertaken.

T

his substantial hospital is 135,000 sq ft and has been designed over nine floors. After completing a market study and interviewing over 100 physicians based in the Northern Emirates, we decided upon the optimal specialty and service mix to serve the community’s needs. As such, the Amina Hospital will provide a fully integrated Diabetes Care Center; bringing a top endocrinologist from the US to head the team.

The team will provide individualized care for each patient including the full suite of services required such as ophthalmology, cardiology, podiatry and dietetics. Furthermore, we are focusing on mother and child care by bringing a team of western trained ObGyns, Pediatricians and Neonatologists to manage 5 Labor and delivery suites, specialized C-Section OT, NICU, SCBU, and over 10 specially designed obstetric inpatient rooms. These rooms have been designed keeping local practices in mind, allowing the woman to have ample space to allow for the baby to stay in her room as they recover, while also having private space for visitors and gift stands.

The hospital is currently scheduled to open in early 2014 and is expected to quickly become one of the most important and well respected hospitals in the Northern Emirates. We have recruited all heads of departments and many staff physicians who are ready and looking forward to beginning the new year at the Amina Hospital in Ajman. Additionally, we have conducted our first JCI review and are on our way to becoming accredited in early 2015.

The joining of Hands The past three months has been very exciting following our partnerships with Proficiency central laboratory, Sharjah Corniche group and Ibin Sina group. The efforts taken in the initial months are to learn, understand and involve in the business, understanding the model, the clients, their immediate concerns and to address them so the day to day operations run as smooth as possible especially during the important phase of change management.

As part of the management, our major work-streams ahead are to look at opportunities and areas for the three groups to be working in synergy and mutually contribute to each others growth. I had witnessed the team is constantly looking at improving the service to make it caring and safe for our clients and to deliver our promise of Quality healthcare service by achieving highest standards of quality care.

The management and administration team have been supporting and cooperating with us to ensure that the important tasks during integration management is achieved.

The staff and doctors in all units have taken pride in the partnerships and feel that the association is key to their growth and career prospects as they are now part of a much bigger vision and journey.

The Al Khaleej Pharmacy, Ajman Project Update Another exciting project taking place in Ajman is the transfer of the current Al Khaleej Pharmacy (part of the Ibin Sina group) in Al Quds street, to a new and much improved location in the same building as the Ibin Sina Clinic.

O

ur patients at Ibin Sina, will be able to conveniently collect prescriptions as well as purchase other essential pharmaceutical, health supplements, essentials and beauty products all under one roof.

As you can see from the photographs below, the Al Khaleej pharmacy is nearly complete and will be open for business in the first half of September 2013. We are sure that the new pharmacy will be a great success and take this opportunity to wish the Al Khaleej pharmacy team the very best of luck.

To date, the CME events have been meticulously planned and executed and have grown to gain a fantastic reputation among healthcare

y teaming up with the prestigious Guys and St. Thomas’ Hospital, London, we hope to attract a target of over 2000 professional delegates to attend our October event, certainly keeping Dr. Jacob and the team very busy.

This partnership means that our CME program will become the largest post graduate training conference in the UAE, outside of Arab Health and our partnership with GSTT is the first step in ensuring that our CME events expand to become an international event, attracting world renowned guest speakers and participants across the globe.

For the next two-day conference in October, we have picked very relevant topics for the Middle East - Managing Diabetes and Women and Child Health. With a list of international and local speakers who are experts in their respective fields, we are very excited at the direction this conference and the whole expansion of the CME International programme is heading, and look forward to sharing these exciting developments with you.

Central Marketing Activity Update

I

t’s always busy and buzzing in the Marketing department at AAH, especially as we are getting increasingly integrated with the management and marketing teams at each of the new businesses. We’ve been working closely to understand the patient profile of each of our hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and diagnostic centers and come up with new and innovative ideas of reaching out to the community.

During the last few months, we’ve implemented successful pre Ramadan Health campaigns around the group to encourage patients to participate in discounted health checkups with a doctor prior to the start of Ramadan, to ensure healthy fasting during the Holy Month. From then, we have been following the Regional Healthcare Calendar to put together campaigns for World Hepatitis Day and are planning for World Heart Day in September, and a month long drive for Breast cancer awareness in October.

With all the school children in the region now back at school, we have kick started our Dental ‘Back to School’ packages for our clinics, and will continue to target schools as well as families in the region to ensure that we offer value for money and consistent medical and dental care.

We have been excited about coming up with a health guide for the annual Hajj Pilgrimage in October, to ensure that patients in the community who are travelling, remain healthy during this Holy time.

Our Doctors In the Community

s part of the marketing departments initiative of connecting with our local communities, we are pleased to have supported the Ibin Sina team in planning medical camps in organizations throughout Ajman. Within the last few months, Ibin Sina have provided free medical screens and doctor consultations to the Ajman Police, Ajman TV and Radio Studios as well as employees of the busy Lulu Hypermarket. Meet a Member of the Amina Hospital Team Rita Taylor, Director of Nursing, Amina Hospitals

Hello and welcome to the very first Health Works newsletter. I would like to introduce myself to the Anglo Arabian Healthcare family and give you an overview of my hopes, aspirations, expectations and vision for the future of Amina Hospitals.

I

am originally from Manchester in the United Kingdom and have many years experience of Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive care, but more recently, in the last 10 years my career has taken me to Senior Management with an emphasis on quality, patient safety and infection control including risk management and health and safety in a wider facility context.

I have been involved in many Joint Commission Accreditation (JCI) survey processes and successfully led my last team as the first organization of its kind to JCI Accreditation in January 2013.

My vision and aspirations for the future are to ensure that Amina Hospital is a quality, patient centered facility with an emphasis on hospitability and a unique customer experience that also includes an emphasis on staff development and empowerment.

My expectations are that we will undertake Investors in People in 2015 and will actively pursue JCI Accreditation by early 2015 and to apply for the Excellence award by 2019.

I do not believe in having PROBLEMS,I believe in OPPORTUNITIES for IMPROVEMENT and lessons to be learned as we grow and develop together.

Laughter is a great form of stress relief, and that’s no joke. Scientific studies have proven that laughing can actually help you feel happier as well as providing relief from the stresses and strains of our modern day lives. It would be foolish to believe that a good sense of humor can cure all ailments and take all our worries away, but scientific data is mounting about the positive things that laughter can do for us.

aughter isn’t just a quick pick-me-up, though. It’s also good for you over the long term. Laughter may:

Improve your immune system. Negative thoughts manifest into chemical reactions that can affect your body by bringing more stress into your system and decreasing your immunity. In contrast, positive thoughts actually release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially more-serious illnesses.

Relieve pain. Laughter may ease pain by causing the body to produce its own natural painkillers. Laughter may also break the pain-spasm cycle common to some muscle disorders.

he first step towards achieving success is to define what it represents to us. A key factor is understanding ourselves and what ‘makes us tick’. What is our definite purpose in life? If we know where we want to head, it’ll be far easier to set in place a plan to get us there. What motivates us?

The most important step on the road to SUCCESS is first ACKNOWLEDGING ourselves for what we are: our faults, strengths, ‘warts and all’. Our hopes and dreams for our life are vitally important.

The key ingredients in the formula to success are as follows: 1. A plan 2. Focus

So what else helps?

A strong belief in our self and what we are doing (or trying to achieve). Our ultimate goals and dreams should conform to our values.

Whatever we are, the key ingredient to achieving success is PERSISTENCE. All of the above character traits give us our strength in the face of adversity. Empowerment this is the ability to take control over our life and learn from our experiences. We can all learn so much from the roller coaster that is life each and every day. Or is it swings and roundabouts?

There are two modes of acquiring knowledge, namely by reasoning and experience. Keeping you Healthy at Work

W

e all know that sitting at a desk all day is not exactly the best thing for our bodies, but a recent New York Times Magazine article posits that not only is it bad, it could case serious health problems.

James Levine, a researcher at the Mayo Clinic, has been studying the effects of sitting and says that it can lead to earlier death — up to 20 percent, according to his and others’ research.

Why is being sedentary so bad? As soon as we sit, Levine says, our muscle activity, insulin effectiveness, and good (HDL) cholesterol levels fall, and our calorieburning rate drops to a third of what it is when we walk. All of this also increases our risk for developing Type 2 diabetes and becoming obese. Sitting is so bad for you, Levine says, that an otherwise active lifestyle can’t combat the negative effects of sitting at the office for nine hours a day.

But since we can’t all have a job that keeps us moving and in shape, the researcher suggests that we can do little things — ‘non-exercise activities’ — to combat the effects of excessive sitting whenever we can. Here are some tips to keep you healthy at work:

Take more breaks. Of course, we know that walking is better than sitting all day, but trying to walk more is not just about the aerobic exercise. It’s about movement; Levine’s research, in fact, showed that patients given an extra 1,000 calories a day who walked and moved around more (but didn’t do any actual exercise) gained little to no weight, while the ones who were more sedentary gained much more.

Organize your desk. Every little movement matters, so the more time you spend making it a habit to move in your seat can translate to a beneficial change.

Drink more water. You’ll get up more for refills and bathroom breaks, which will cut into your sitting time plus, drinking water hydrates your brain and keeps you focused.

Stretch at your desk. Every little bit counts, even bending over to tie your shoe, so adding some office chair stretches to your daily routine will not only help you re-energize and de-stress, it’s also great for adding to your movement count!

As you can see, some of the figures and statistics are eye-openers in terms of the amount of investment that is being injected into the regional healthcare market. There are also some real concerns about the serious health risks an unhealthy lifestyle manifests, such as cardiovascular disease that is expected to DOUBLE in the next 17 years.

any of you would of heard of the UAE’s largest and most prestigious international healthcare event, held in the heart of Dubai at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Covering over 53,677 square meters of prime exhibition space, Arab Health is in its 5th consecutive year and visitors from all around the globe have increased by 15% from 2011 to 2012.

The event is internationally recognized as the most important healthcare gathering in the region and is a platform for business development as well as healthcare education. Our CEO, Mark Adams will also be speaking at Arab Health.

In 2013, Anglo Arabian Healthcare shall officially launch the The Amina Hospital brand into the healthcare sector, taking a 21square meter stand on the main concourse, promoting all services and areas of expertise.

The PHD (Proficiency Healthcare Diagnostics) brand will also be unveiled in the MedLab section of the exhibition and shall enjoy sponsorship benefits too in order to raise the new brand awareness and attract new business.
