nglo Arabian Healthcare only started its journey in January 2012 and in four years we have come an incredibly long way. We are now over 1,000 team members strong, we have approaching 40 clinical assets and 160 Doctors on board which makes us one of the largest groups in the UAE. 2015 saw the opening of the first Amina Hospital in Ajman and we were honoured by His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman, who inaugurated the facility on the 25th of November. The hospital is now fully open and is drawing praise from all who visit our impressive facility. A big vote of thanks to Dr. Eduard Lotz and his commissioning team who have overcome many challenges to see the vision become reality. January 2016 will see the opening of our first IVF centre in Dubai Healthcare City and the introduction of our new brand ‘Orchid Reproductive and Andrology Services’ which has the acronym of www.oras-ivf.com for the website reflecting our partnership with Dr. Oras, one of the leading and most respected Gynaecologists in the UAE. We are excited to be building the new business with her guidance and from the legacy of the highly respected fertility specialist Dr. Wafa

The second IVF centre has been agreed with an extension of our partnership with Oasis Hospital in Al Ain. This will hopefully open in September 2016. This year is going to be busy across the group with HealthBay going through its brand refresh to coincide with the opening of the 6 new villas on Al Wasl Road in Dubai and seeing us move into specialized areas of Women’s Health, Orthopaedics and Medical Oncology. HealthBay has also recently celebrated the opening of our clinic in Motor City and later this year we hope to also expand into the busy Dubai Marina area. Contd...

Sharjah Corniche Hospital also has a big year ahead with a move in September planned into the Crystal Plaza Building a few hundred yards down the road. This new facility with a dedicated patient lift and onsite parking will also allow us to have the entire team on one floor and to double the number of patient beds that we can offer. PHD who had a very successful year last year will consolidate in 2016 with their partnership with Amina Hospital and HealthBay expanding. With the main laboratory in Abu Dhabi now moving to incredible levels of automation and continuing to win awards as the regions largest and highest quality facility, there are exciting times ahead.

Amina Hospital receives a royal blessing It was an incredibly proud day when the Amina Hospital was officially inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Noaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman. To have the royal seal of approval from His Highness was indeed, the greatest honor to bestow upon the first Amina Hospital in Ajman.

is Highness was accompanied by his son, His Highness Sheikh Rashid and His Excellency Dr. Amin Hussain Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Medical Practice and License Sector in UAE Ministry of Health and the entire royal party were welcomed to the hospital by Mark Adams, CEO of Anglo Arabian Healthcare and Salem Al Noaimi, CEO and Managing Director of Waha Capital. Whilst the press jostled for the best photographs of this momentous occasion, His Highness drew the curtains on the official Amina Hospital inauguration plaque to rousing applause and then proceeded to a guided tour of the Amina Hospital which was led by Dr. Eduard Lotz, Dr. Hesham Souka and Dr. Abdul Gafoor.
Our initial 65 bed multi-specialty hospital has the capacity to expand up to 120 inpatient beds and offers international quality standard medical services for the people of Ajman and the surrounding Emirates. Spanning across an expanse of 125,000 square feet, the advanced facility has been meticulously planned and equipped with the highest caliber of Doctors and support staff, the latest medical and diagnostic technologies including four laminar flow operating theatres, delivery suites, advanced neonatal intensive care units with more than 20 multi-specialty departments. We are confident that Amina Hospital is the very best secondary care facility in the Northern Emirates.

A recent report (by consulting firm RNCOS) predicts the UAE healthcare market is expected to grow by 7% between 2015 and 2020. Sharjah Corniche Hospital Group The second half of 2015 has been a busy time at the Sharjah Corniche Group as we added new doctors, held plenty of community based marketing events and progressed well with our expansion plans.
S
harjah Corniche Hospital received the approval for a Pharmacy license on the Ground floor, and we expect to start work in February 2016. In addition to this, the 2nd floor space is now in our possession. We began the fit out works in December 2015, and expect completion by the end of February 2016. We had a number of new recruits across the group to fill key positions, and to expand busy departments. These include Radiologists, Anaesthesiologist and a Gynaecologist to the Sharjah

Corniche Hospital team, and a GP and Audiologist to our Unicare Medical Centre team. We are very excited about our new Audiology services, which will complement our ENT department. We have also recruited a marketing executive for our laboratory in RAK, and we anticipate that this will enhance our presence in the Emirate.

Expanding into a premium network of laboratories and diagnostic centres The PHD Group of laboratories is rapidly evolving into a well-known, multi-faceted entity with new labs in the pipeline and major developments happening in the existing facilities. A part of Anglo Arabian Healthcare
T
he laboratory in Abu Dhabi underwent a huge expansion in October 2015 and is now fitted with the latest, state-of-the-art instruments, especially in the preanalytics area. These instruments have significantly increased the quality and the turn-around time of the test results. A new laboratory project in the Western Region is in full swing. Currently, lab & radiology related equipment is being procured and we expect to be ready to receive patients by January 2016. Currently, the expansion of our Al Ain laboratory is on-going with the

Radiology department (X-Ray and Ultrasound)all set to open very soon. With the above two projects, PHD will become a full-fledged diagnostics services chain. Further expansion is being planned and PHD is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that they we are a laboratory of choice for everyone. With several revenue streams in place, through referrals from hospital/clinic clients etc., lab management, quality assurances and corporates, PHD has diversified the revenue cycle, with radiology expected to contribute further to its growth.
Oasis Hospital Lab The Oasis Hospital Lab moved into its new facility on 9th August 2015, during the soft opening of the Hospital. The new lab has been setup in an extensive area and has been integrated with the latest state-of-theart instruments with a highly qualified pathologist and lab technicians who guarantee efficiency and quality. We are happy to announce that the Oasis Hospital Lab passed the HAAD (Health Authority of Abu Dhabi) inspection in all aspects at the first instance and was one of the few departments of Oasis Hospital to be ready on the day of the soft opening.

HealthBay Group News As soon as the partnership between Anglo Arabian Healthcare and HealthBay was finalized in early 2015, both teams seamlessly integrated within the Operations, Finance, HR and Marketing departments.

015 was a year for a lot of positive changes at HealthBay with several expansion plans, a brand refresh, new doctors and staff, additional departments and lots of construction! Thankfully, we can look back and say that our hard work paid off, and HealthBay has solidified itself as one of the best reputed clinics in the UAE. We are keen to grow this name with our new clinics in Motor City and Al Wasl Road. After months of hard work, our newest clinic located in Motor City opened for patients on the 9th of January 2016. Medical services at HealthBay, Motor City include: Family Medicine, Paediatrics and Gynaecology. It’s also the first of our clinics to showcase our new brand and logo, and we are so excited to start the year with a fresh look. In our Al Thanya clinic, we have finally broken down the wall between the two villas, and pleased with how spacious and modern the two adjacent clinics look. We will be moving our Dermatology services into the new villa, and will introduce a Plastic Surgery department. The 6 Villas – our biggest project to date, is progressing well as Villas 4, 5 and 6 are already under construction, and will be ready and functional by March 2016. The rest of villas will be opened before Summer 2016.
The Medical services offered in the 6 villas are: Villa 1, 2 and 3: Polyclinic Villa 4: Diagnostic Centre Villa 5: Orthopaedics and Physiotherapy Villa 6: Oncology We have a long, yet exciting 2016 ahead of us that is sure to be filled with triumphs and hurdles. Our newest branch in the HealthBay group located in the heart of Motor City opened its doors to patients during the first week of 2016. We are pleased to have Dr. Ria Jones, Family Medicine Specialist and Medical Director, and Dr. Amber Syed, Consultant Ob/ Gyn join our medical team at Motor City. We also welcomed two new physicians: Dr. Mavluda McDonnell, Family Medicine Specialist and Dr. Mascha LindemannSayed, Specialist Paediatrician to the group. HealthBay, Motor City aims to cater to the growing population of ‘South Dubai’ by providing high quality primary and family healthcare, with a focus on wellness and disease prevention.

Concord Medical Centres The branding transition of Ibin Sina Medical Centres into Concord Medical Centres has commenced. Two of our clinics, Ibin Sina Medical Centre and Family Medical Centre, are already rebranded and the other two clinics have received approvals to be rebranded. The next rebranding phase will include all of our pharmacies. Our pharmacies are undergoing a facelift for more visibility, which will result in a better experience for our patients. We are also in the procedd of securing our own pharmacy warehouse, which will cater to the medicine and drug requirements for our facilities in the Northern Emirates. We are also looking forward to relocating one of our pharmacies to a strategic location as well as increasing the number of pharmacies. A rework of our clinical areas at Ibin Sina Medical Centre is almost over and this will enhance patient experience, which we hope will translate to increased loyalty. Our staff have been involved in community service through the National Immunization Program, led by the Preventive Medicine Department of Ajman.

The Ibin Sina CME team was thrilled that the 22nd CME held from October 29th – 30th, 2015 had our highest attendance rate to date.
O
ver 2,700 health professionals joined us over the course of two days to learn about the latest trends in medicine. Our topic for this year’s sessions were ‘Evidence Based Medicine and Changing Managements’ for the medical conference, and ‘Evidence Based Dentistry and Changing Managements’ for the Dental conference. We welcomed two doctors: Dr. Kiren Sahota, Specialist Family Medicine and Dr.

Hassan El Tamimi, Specialist Cardiologist from our sister clinic HealthBay to speak on the first day of the conference. We received excellent feedback from their sessions, and encourage more doctors within the AAH group to participate as speakers. We also had our newly launched hospital, Amina Hospital as the Diamond Sponsor of the event. We hope the participation encouraged interaction and referrals for the hospital with doctors in the Northern Emirates.
From a CME program with 200 doctors just a few years ago, we have grown tremendously and are established as a CME provider of repute. Central Marketing Activity Update From the official launch of our first Amina Hospital in Ajman to rebranding of clinics and plenty of campaigns and community outreach programs, the team was super busy in the latter half of last year. Here’s a short summary:

In the last few months, the Anaesthesiology, Gynaecology and Radiology expanded with the addition of new doctors to our team. To spread relevant health messages we held several community driven campaigns across Sharjah and partnered with educational institutions such as the Sharjah University, Victoria School and Sharjah Indian Association. We maintained our media presence through strategically released advertisements in popular print media, promoting our surgery, and mother and child services, in particular. Global Handwashing Day also observed at Sharjah Corniche Hospital with staff participating to help spread the message on safe handwashing practices.
It was a proud moment for us when the Family Medical Centre and Al Shifa Pharmacy were inaugurated at a brand new and spacious facility in New Industrial Area, Al Zahra, Ajman. The new facility is getting busy and we anticipate several new specialties to be added very soon. In addition, we have launched a phased roll out of the ‘Concord’ brand across the Ibin Sina group. The Ibin Sina Medical Centre and Family Medical Centre currently have dual branded sign board (see pictures).
In addition, our doctors were regularly invited back to speak on radio channels. The team also anticipates a busy year ahead with Sharjah Corniche Hospital’s impending move to the Crystal Plaza building down the road. The move to this spacious location will present several branding and marketing opportunities. At Unicare Medical Centre, the ENT department was enhanced with the addition of an Audiologist. A free hearing camp was successfully held to promote this department.

awareness campaigns in association with various educational institutions and Government establishment in Ajman including: Al Amana Private School, Emirates Post Office Ajman, and Ajman Traffic & Licensing Department. In support of World Heart Day, we held a two day in-house screening campaign Ibin Sina Medical Centre that saw a huge turnout. We also coordinated a Global Hand Washing day program across the group which helped to create public awareness on the importance of proper hand washing techniques.
After many weeks of planning, the Amina Hospital Ajman was successfully inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, the ruler of Ajman, in the presence of ministers, government dignitaries, guests and staff and senior management teams of Amina Hospital, Anglo Arabian Healthcare and Waha Capital. The celebrations then moved to the Kempinski Hotel, Ajman where several VIP guests, community doctors and Amina staff attended the inaugural function over lunch. This day was truly one filled with pride and the result of hard work and support of everyone involved.

Soon after the inauguration, we held an Open Day for the residents of Ajman to explore and experience their brand new hospital. Free health screenings for BMI, blood pressure and blood sugar and a consultation with Internal Medicine doctors for adults, and a growth assessment with Consultant Paediatrician for babies & children saw nearly 170 people visit and experience the Amina Hospital promise – Always There To Care. The most popular area of the hospital turned out to be Amina’s Garden, the name given to the various children’s play areas in the hospital. The official mascot, the sunflower named Amina, face painters and balloon artists provided ample entertainment for the kids while parents and adults received information and samples from Amina Hospital’s brand partners. Even before the official launch, Amina Hospital received a nod of approval from the Ajman Municipality via a jointly held month long breast cancer awareness campaign. Aptly titled ‘Feel PG.

The second half of the year was a whirlwind for the HealthBay marketing team with plenty of activities keeping us busy. One of the biggest projects involved finalising a new brand for the group and which will serve as a foundation of all communication material going forward. We are pleased to have received positive feedback from the doctors, management and staff on the professional look of the new logo. As part of the brand refresh, we will be revamping our current website. This is something that has always been on the back burner and is now progressing well. The new website will be ready by January 2016. Our Motor City clinic opened in the

beginning of January 2016 and will be the first clinic within the group to showcase the new branding. We will be gradually implementing the new brand across the other clinics within the first quarter of 2016, in order to have a unified look across the HealthBay group. We had some exciting campaigns during October and November promoting the importance of early detection and screening for breast cancer and Diabetes. The campaign worked so well that we were fully booked with mammograms within the first week! We successfully produced patient educational videos with Dr. Kinda Douidari who demonstrated a self-breast examination tutorial, and Dr. Katia El Sibai who discussed screening, prevention and risk factors of Diabetes. All our videos
have received positive feedback and generated many views on our Facebook and YouTube pages. With lots more doctors and departments joining the group in 2016, we hope to maintain the momentum. Breastfeeding Support Group with Just Kidding and HealthBay’s Baby Cafe HealthBay, along with the very popular baby store Just Kidding, were honoured to be nominated this year by Time Out Kids Magazine.
T
he Breastfeeding Support Group, which is held on a monthly basis received this nomination with pride. While the award went to ‘Out of the Blues’ a vital voluntary group which assists women who are suffering with postnatal illness we were very pleased to be highlighted as a provider of excellence for pre and post natal support in Dubai. Dru Campbell, Head Midwife and one of our Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) attends the group to provide information and support for breastfeeding families and parents who are expecting babies. The Breastfeeding Support Group is a significant public health initiative, as women and husbands are able to speak to a qualified Lactation Consultant to answer any questions they have. They can also receive breastfeeding support and up to date, evidence based information about breastfeeding. According to the World Health Organisation and UNICEF, breastfeeding is the optimal form of nutrition for all babies and children. Breastfeeding is natural, however it is a learned art and can pose some PG.

challenges. Therefore requesting early assistance from a qualified health care professional can positively enhance the breastfeeding relationship between mother and baby. The group is facilitated at no charge in pleasant surroundings at the Just Kidding Store near Al Safa Park and a complimentary morning tea is provided. No. 1: Blow Your Nose Often - and the Right Way!
It’s important to blow your nose regularly when you have a cold rather than sniffling mucus back into your head. But when you blow hard, pressure can cause an unpleasant ear-ache. The best way to blow your nose is: Press a finger over one nostril while you blow gently to clear the other. Don’t forget to thoroughly wash and dry your hands after blowing your nose!

Protecting our children and back-seat passengers Abu Dhabi Police punished more than 33,000 motorists caught not using the seat belt while driving their cars in the first half of 2015.
A
fter dropping my daughter off to school the other morning, I sat in traffic on the way to work half-listening to Dubai Eye radio, half thinking about the day ahead. My attention was drawn to the subject the radio presenters were discussing which was road safety in the Emirates and the absolute essential need to secure and strap young children into cars using seat belts. Although there is no legislation in place to protect drivers, passengers and young children travelling in cars, I hope that the law will enforce the use of seat belts for all passengers very soon. Thomas Edelmann, founder of the website Road Safety UAE, agreed. “The introduction of a holistic seat belt law, protecting our children and back-seat passengers, has long been overdue.” Abu Dhabi Police punished more than 33,000 motorists caught not using the seat belt while driving their cars in the first half of 2015. Police said the offenders were fined Dh400 and had four black points

added to their traffic record in line with federal traffic laws in the UAE. “There were 33,884 such offences in the first half of this year. The penalties in these offences are intended to force drivers and other car users to use the seat belt to preserve their lives as studies have shown that the belt reduces death risk by 40-60 per cent in accidents,” said Brigadier Mohammed Al Kitbi, acting director of the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols department. These statistics are staggering considering that it is so simple to put a seat belt on or strap a child into a car seat. Sitting at the traffic lights, I looked around and noticed a man in front of me with a toddler of around one and a half years of age, standing between the driver and front passenger seats. In the front, was her sister, dressed in her school uniform obviously being taken to school. The father had his seat belt on but his children were
free to move around as they pleased; ironically, on the back shelf of his car was a hard safety hat that maybe he used while he was at work. As the lights changed to green and we all moved forward, I pulled alongside him and gestured for him to put the seat belts on the children but he scowled at me, as if I had insulted him and drove away… I watched the little toddler disappear into the sea of cars ahead of me and prayed that she would be safe. Please remember the next time you get into a car either on your own or with your family and friends to put on your seat belt. Protect the lives of the ones you love by insisting they do the same.

HBA1c as a marker for diabetes control The HbA1c assay is the gold-standard measurement of high sugar levels and measures the amount of glucose that binds to haemoglobin over a period of 3 months.
T
he HbA1c Test is often prescribed as a must-do blood test for pre-diabetic, type 1 diabetic or type 2 diabetic or even non-diabetics.
So what exactly is HbA1c?
In the abbreviation “HbA1c”, ‘Hb’ refers to hemoglobin while ‘A1c’ is a specific subtype of haemoglobin. Also called the Glycated/ Glycosylated Haemoglobin A Protein test, the HbA1c test gives the level of blood glucose estimated over a period of time (ideally 3 months or 8-10 weeks). Unlike the customary finger-prick blood test which reads blood glucose at a specific point in time, the HbA1c gives us a long range value.
How does this measure work?
This reading of blood glucose is unaffected by immediate or short-term fluctuations in blood sugar and reflects how well glucose levels have been maintained over the specific period. HbA1c test improves the effectiveness of diabetes treatment by tablets or insulin injection or both. It is a good guiding test by which the patient can understand how best he has controlled his condition and take further necessary corrective action.
The HbA1c test range should be as follows • A non-diabetic should have an A1c result between 4% and 6%. • In Diabetics - A1c level should be 6.5% (47 mmol/mol) or higher. • In Pre-diabetes (increased risk of developing diabetes in the future): A1c is 5.7% to 6.4% (39 - 46 mmol/mol)
How will it help you manage your diabetes better?
In most diabetic individuals the blood glucose level is higher and results in a higher HbA1c level. This higher level also reflects the possible level of damage to tissues due to glycation and hence diabetic complications.
As an example of your HBA1C readings, if your reading as a diabetic is between 6.5 to 7%, this really implies is that for every 100 red blood cells, 6-7 cells have glucose attached to them. In the long term the importance of the HbA1c test can be understood from the fact that if well controlled, it lowers the possibility of vascular complications that can be traced back to diabetes.
How often should one test with HbA1c? If someone is first diagnosed with diabetes or if the control of diabetes is not good then HbA1c is usually ordered more frequently. The American Diabetes Association recommends testing HbA1c at least twice a year. Usually the test is conducted less often if diabetes is well controlled but most physicians would subject their patients to have the test 2 to 4 times each year.

Sleep seems to have a significant stance in mystical creations; the first man Adam was put into a state of deep sleep by the almighty creator before He resected out of a rib to create the mother of humanity. In Hindu mythology, the God Vishnu brings forth the universe from his navel during his cosmic sleep. Sleep is a very favorite topic for the story tellers of all cultures through the ages, and world literature abounds with sleep stories. Washington Irving created Rip Van Winkle the legendary sleeper who slept for twenty long years. The

fairy tale – Sleeping Beauty depicts the curse that forced the princess into hundred years of sleep and our children still ardently listen to these bedtime stories. The question as to why we sleep baffled and bewildered humanity from antiquity, yet the perfect answer is still elusive. Aristotle wrote extensively on sleep, sleeplessness and formulated theories of “phantasia”, the metaphysical aspects of dreams. Decades of scientific research still struggle to formulate a clear answer to this challenging question. But what we do know is
that sleep makes us feel better. Scientists have approached and analyzed this puzzling issue from different perspectives and formulated many promising theories to explain the mysterious sleep.
Inactivity theory This is also known as the adaptive theory and belongs to one of the earliest presumptions. It is an evolutionary adaptation to stay still and quiet during the darkness of night to avoid accidents and to escape the attacks of

the predators. Through natural selection this behavioral strategy evolved into the phenomenon of sleep but it lacks wide acceptance.
Energy conservation theory Effective energy utilization is considered as one of the strongest factors for survival and in natural selection. According to this theory the primary function of sleep is to reduce the individual’s energy turnover especially during the parts of the day when food hunt is difficult.
Restorative theory Wealth of scientific evidence points to the fact that body repairs and rejuvenates itself during the course of sleep. Now it is understood that muscle growth, protein production and growth hormone release are happening when we sleep. When we are awake our brain cells are very active and this leads to the buildup of the depressing adenosine molecules in the neurons which can be the cause of the sleep drive. During sleep, body clears the adenosine buildup and rejuvenates itself.
Brain plasticity theory Modern neuro-imaging modalities convincingly show that sleep is correlated to structural and functional changes in the brain, the brain plasticity. Infants sleep for about 12-14 hours a day and it is crucial to their brain development. It is a well known fact that memory consolidation happens during sleep and sleep deprivation affects our ability to learn and perform. More facts about this recent and compelling plasticity theory are yet to be known.
All the sleep theories try to establish that sleep is essential for survival but some sleep pundits ponder that sleep is a risky and costly affair to the animal world. When an animal sleeps “it’s not protecting itself, not taking care of its young ones, not eating and not procreating.” Interestingly sleep duration, sleep manners and habits vary widely among animal species subserving the notion that sleep may serve different functions for different animals. The sleep lab at the University of California has studied the sleep habits of many different animals and reports that not all species need the eight hours a day sleep conventionally required by man. Horses and giraffes need less than four hours of sleep, bats sleep for twenty hours and dolphins about ten hours a day. As a general rule small mammals tend to sleep more probably because of their meager fat stores and energy conserving difficulties.

The fox sleeps curled up, the leopard straddles a tree limb, bat sleeps hanging down, horses typically sleep standing and the homo sapiens assume many cozy positions of comfort. Man has to cycle through two distinct sleep types during his sleep. The REM (rapid eye movement) sleep characterized by low amplitude, high frequency EEG rhythms and non-REM sleep with high amplitude, low frequency rhythms. Sleep begins as nonREM sleep and we pass through its three stages to reach the REM sleep which is attained about ninety minutes after we fall asleep. Body repair, tissue growth and immune boosting mainly happen during non-REM sleep but REM sleep generously gifts us our vibrant dreams. Interestingly young infants spend about 50% of their sleep time in REM stage. The clock struck 10, the street sounds are dying down, I am almost done with the “sleep” piece that I am doing, I feel sleepy, adenosine might have flooded in my aging neurons. I should sleep now… let my sleep shall be sweet…
When we sleep we conk out completely, oblivious of the world around us, but some animals like whales and seals shut off only portions of their brain keeping half their brain working to stay at the surface of water for breathing. It is also interesting that migratory birds and hibernating animals can adjust their biological clock and sleep requirements depending on the geographical location and season. It is universally accepted that sleep is indispensable to mammals but still among them sleep positions

Anglo Arabian Healthcare’s Intrepid Explorer! The Travelogue of Jonalyn Daguman.
E
ver since I joined AAH in Nov 2013 and my siblings’ completed their higher education (that I have been so grateful to be able to fund) I got the opportunity to pursue my dreams: save money to travel around the world and make investments. I have been here in UAE since 2006 and never travelled as family obligations needed my attention. I am keen to meet new people, and learn more about the rest of the world, their cultures and taste their delicacies. Being adventurous and dreaming of going to places were always a part of me. I was introduced to a group of friends through my colleagues (Preda and Eugene at AAH Head Office) whose company I enjoyed as they made every trip organized, easy, and informative and most of all, worry free. They became my travel buddies as well as friends. Our customized itineraries enabled me to experience the rich culture of each country and develop patience and understanding of people. I have had many great adventurous trips, lots of memories, pictures, have enjoyed sightseeing, shopping, dining local food and market tours, collecting souvenir mugs, fridge magnets and t-shirts.
WOW was the most frequent word used by me during my travel. Some of the highlights with my travel buddies.

• Tasted seafood Paella and had tapas and red wine • Watched traditional dance, visited old football stadiums and Castles. • Quick trip to the Mediterranean beach.
• Visited local markets for souvenirs and to shop for local produce; enjoyed the cooking afterwards • Visited churches, especially Gaudi’s majestic Sagrada Familia • Strolled along the crowded La Rambla.
• Enjoyed the amazing scenery on a coach ride from Scotland to Windermere • Saw several loch, castles, flower yards and farms • Tried to wear the Scottish skirts (ladies’) and kilt (men’s). (Tip - Avoid calling the garment a ‘skirt’ to men as they find it offensive) • Visited the whiskey factory in Scotland. • Took a ride on the London Eye • Strolled along London Bridge (while singing ‘London Bridge is falling down!), Tower Bridge and Big Ben. • Experienced all 4 seasons in a day, which was amazing. • Saw the marching and parade of the Buckingham Palace Guards. • Visited the Roman Bath and the Stonehenge

If you are planning for your own travel, it is recommended to pay attention to your budget, review ratings for travel agencies and understand local tours and transportation, hotel accommodation, quality of meals and comfort. Pack clothing as per the weather, travel light, wear comfortable shoes and bargain.
Highlights of the trip:
• Experienced Thai Massages • Tasted tropical fruits and visited the ‘Condoms & Cabbages Restaurant’. • Walked down Red Light District • Visited many temples and saw the reclining Buddha. • Boat ride on the Floating Market • Photo with a live Python (scary but a must try) • Road trip to Pattaya • Shopping - Bangkok is so worth it and cheap!
Switzerland and Italy: September 2015 Highlights of the trip:
• Fell in love with Switzerland and Italy during our road trip with the sights, colours, heritage and cultural sights. • Took a very expensive Gondola ride in Venice. Dubai Abra is cheaper and better :) • Managed to lose some of our friends in Venice, Italy thanks to massive crowds! • Saw Michael Angelo’s sculptures in Florence, Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Colosseum. • Cable car ride on Mt. Titlis, Switzerland - my first experience with snow. Became a child jumping, rolling and playing with the snow. • Tasted traditional pasta and pizza.

While package tours can be affordable, I prefer travelling with a small group of friends as it feels secure and is more fun.
hill and hurt myself (must get better footwear next time!) • Reprimanded by priest during mass as we giggled like children outside the Gergeti Trinity Church. • Visiting this country is easier on a wallet! In 2016, I look forward to visiting Paris, Amsterdam, Germany, Belgium, and Netherlands in May. Next on the agenda will hopefully be Canada and USA (for which I have started saving), Sri Lanka, South Korea, Japan and of course my native land (Philippines). Travelling is addictive however it needs a lot of money and a planned budget
Through sharing my travel photos on Facebook, I have influenced some of my friends to join me in my travels. My mother who expressed happiness every time I travelled, looks forward to seeing my trip pictures and enquires about my next trip. I always compare places I have visited to the UAE and I always say it is good to be back home to Dubai where the roads are bigger and I am accustomed to accessible and better facilities. From my experiences, my message to all fellow colleagues and friends is to work hard and save but also remember to reward yourself and experience new things and travel - because you only live once and if you do it right, once is enough.

n keeping with our theme of sharing delicious recipes from different countries, reflecting our truly international organization, we have two delicious recipes for you – a traditional Dutch treat, and a dessert perfect for the cool weather. I hope that you get the chance to make and enjoy them. If you do, please don’t forget to provide us with your feedback and to share your own special culinary stories and delights with your colleagues here at AAH.
Oliebollen – Dough Balls There is one thing that the Dutch can’t go without on New Year’s Eve and that is Oliebollen. Enjoying these treats is an important part of celebrating New Year. The literal translation for oliebollen is grease balls, which obviously doesn’t sound appealing but trust me they are heavenly! Oliebollen are dough balls, made from a batter consisting of flour, eggs, yeast and milk and are deep-fried in hot oil. You can also add raisins and currants to make them extra special. To finish them off we dust them in a generous amount of powdered sugar. After watching and helping my father make them every year, I made my very own oliebollen for the first time last year and I have to say, they were gorgeous!
MANGO SOUFFLE This is a recipe that I have improvised from a coconut souffle. So you can call it whatever you’d like. Maybe some fancy names such as Layered Mango Souffle or just Mango Pudding. This is one of the easiest desserts you can make and will be definitely loved by all.
INGREDIENTS (approx.. 6 oliebollen): • • • • • •
125 grams (4.4 oz) flour 75 ml milk, warm 7 gram (0.25 oz) active dry yeast 20 grams (0.7 oz) butter, softened 15 grams (0.5 oz) sugar 1 teaspoon lemon zest

Pinch of salt 1 egg 20 grams (0.7 oz) raisins and currants or other dried fruits 1 heaped tablespoon of powdered sugar
INGREDIENTS
PREPARATION METHOD
• 1 can Alphonso Mango Pulp (available in the supermarket - Mother’s Recipe) • 1 can Nestle sweetened condensed milk • 1 cup fresh milk • 2 sachets Dream Whip (whipping cream) made as per instructions on the packet. • 2 sachets Davis gelo gelatine (dissolved in half cup of hot water)
Soak the raisins in some warm water several hours before, preferably the night prior to the frying. Dissolve the yeast in the warm milk. Mix the flour, sugar and the lemon zest, and stir the milk and yeast mix carefully. Add the egg and the salt and stir the batter for several minutes until everything is nicely blended. Stir in the drained raisins. Cover and let rise until it doubled its volume, stir down and let rise again.
PREPARATION METHOD 1. Mix together the Alphonso Pulp, sweetened condensed milk, fresh milk, gelatine and mango cubes. 2. Make the whipped cream as per instructions. 3. Layer and decorate as desired. 4. Chill in the refrigerator and enjoy!
In the meantime, heat the oil in the fryer up to 190°C (375F). Place a plate with several paper towels to soak up the excess fat of the fried goods. Stir the batter down. Now use a large spoon or an ice cream scoop to scoop out a portion, drop it into the hot oil and fry for about four minutes on each side or until brown. It’s important to gauge the temperature of your oil: too hot and the oil will scorch the outside but leave the inside of the balls uncooked. Drain the balls on paper towels, then transfer onto a new plate and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Enjoy!
