CEO’s Introduction: Dear Colleagues, It is hard to believe that we are in the 5th month of the year already. We have been incredibly busy this year with a new HIS system being introduced and planning the wide range of development projects across the group. I am afraid to say that we are also going to have a busy seven months ahead of us where we should see the opening of the new Amina Hospital in Ajman, the gradual opening of the new Health Bay villas on Al Wasl Road and the new Health Bay clinic in Motor City, Dubai, as well as the expansion of the Sharjah Corniche Hospital (which is almost doubling in size), the opening of the Family Medical Centre in Ajman and the latest PHD laboratory in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi.

he start of 2015 has seen us welcome into the AAH family the great team at Oasis Hospital lab, led by Dr. Iman. This team of 21 colleagues will be moving along with their existing hospital colleagues, to the new Oasis Hospital this summer. Their proud history of being pioneers for UAE healthcare, where many of the Royal family were born, will continue in a new state-of-the-art facility and with a twenty five year partnership with PHD for laboratory medicine. We wish them every success in the new chapter of their journey.

2015 will also see AAH reach over 1,000 staff and for a project that only started in January 2012, this represents good progress. We are investigating the possibility of investing in another two hospital projects as well as a number of further acquisitions and this will see the pace of our expansion increase still further.

happen and he will be greatly missed. The new leadership structure in Finance and HR will take a while to fully settle down and Hani Helou, CFO with our new HR Director Lisa Eadie, will be counting on the support of all of our leaders to help them to fully understand the needs and priorities of our group. To Lisa Eadie provide focused leadership HR Director, AAH and accountability after the departure of Kieran, I have also made a number of other changes to the structure of AAH. For the Northern Emirates, I have asked Dr. Eduard Lotz to form a steering board that will include myself and Dr’s Mahesh and Gafoor to ensure that we fully integrate our Concord and Amina brands and ensure that we hit our targets for expansion. Dr. Ed will take day-to-day responsibility for this region with the guidance of the steering board and by working closely with Sheik Mohammed Ali and Allan Pereira in forming an operating team. We can leverage the experience that we have both at Amina Hospital as well as the deep understanding of the Sharjah and Ajman markets that the Sharjah Corniche Group and Ibin Sina team bring to AAH. By working together, we hope to see strong future performance from this region. With Dr. Oras and Dr. Kamal leading the growth of our higher demographic segment, I have asked Dr. Dania Alsammarae to move from her Strategy Director role into a leadership position in our move into IVF fertility, as well as taking the COO role at Health Bay. With between 7-13 clinics under development and the possibility of two hospitals, we will need to further strengthen the team to fulfil our ambitions. However, we really do have the opportunity to create the highest profile ‘upper segment’ for healthcare in Dubai and then eventually, the wider UAE. With PHD, we have strengthened the team by appointing Mohammed Zafar to Commercial Director and we will shortly announce the appointment of a Clinical Director to join our MD, Mohammed Bahani and Khristine Pamplona as GM, which will complete this leadership team. With PHD having incredible growth in the last three years, we needed this investment in the management team to ensure that our great Mohammed Zafar success can be maintained. Commercial Director, AAH

Finally, I can discuss two other changes; the first like Kieran’s departure, is a blow to AAH. We have recently been informed that Prem Mahalin will be leaving AAH at the end of May. I have been fortunate enough to work with Prem at my last organisation and again at AAH. He is a talented and hardworking leader who has helped us enormously during the integration of the Northern Emirates and I have advised him that the door is always open should he decide to come home. We wish him well with his new endeavours as Dr. Ed starts the difficult process of finding a successor. The second change is a positive one; Our Marketing Director, Julie and her team have done a great job in building our brands and putting in place the marketing strategy across AAH and all our business units. Unfortunately, because we are under tight budgetary pressure we have not been able to expand this Department, as much as Julie would have liked, to assist with our growth. I have agreed, with the backing of our shareholders, to support the move of the marketing team into an independent Healthcare Marketing Company ‘JUMA Julie Adams Marketing and Events Marketing Director, AAH LLC’. Julie, Jannat, Cynthia and Shiju will continue to handle all aspects of AAH marketing activities under a long term and ongoing contract, but will work with other ‘non-competing’ clients which will allow them to expand and grow. Julie will shortly be announcing a couple of new hires who will also help AAH meet its objectives and increase the breadth of skills within the new organisation. Julie will, in addition to becoming MD of JUMA, remain the acting Marketing Director for AAH and the Editor of internal publications including Health Works. We wish her and the team every success in the future. CME Finally in closing, I would like to congratulate all at Ibin Sina for their 20th CME event on the 19th of March which once again hit record numbers and was a great success. Dr Jacob and his team of unsung heroes have really built one of the pillars of UAE healthcare education and it is to be truly commended. With warm regards,

Sharjah Corniche Hospital Group With the recent joining of new doctors - Dr Mili Abdul Jaleel (Dermatologist) and Dr Suman S Yeli (ENT Surgeon) in the Doctors Medical Centre, we move a step closer to having all the specialties in the centre.
I
n the last quarter in 2014, the appointment of Dr Dina Mohammed Adel Ibrahim Radi (Histopathologist) has made a huge difference in the Histo and Cytology section in the laboratory. The group looks forward to strengthening this department under Dr. Dina’s guidance. We are also proud to inform you Dr. Mohamed Maher Abdelrahman Ismail (Consultant Obstetrics/Gynecologist) has joined Sharjah Corniche Hospital on a part time basis. Dr Maher has a successful practice at his clinic in Ajman and his move to Sharjah Corniche Hospital will boost this key department. Dr Anil P.M’s availability at Unicare Medical Centre in the morning and evening sessions have already shown a significant increase in the number of patients. However, things have not gone as per the plan for the establishment of the Pharmacy in Sharjah Corniche Hospital.

Although the plan was to establish this by the 1st quarter of 2015, it has now been moved to the 2nd quarter of 2015 owing to a few operational issues. The establishment of the pharmacy is a must in the hospital and will ensure that the patients get all required services conveniently and under one roof. Emphasis will be given to the Diagnostic centers, with the replacement of the CT Scan Machine in SCH, replacement of X-ray system in the Doctors Medical Centre and the finalization of an additional DR X-ray system, once space becomes available in the Sharjah Corniche Hospital facility. Recently, a dinner session was organized for all our regular visiting surgeons which had a good response and was the first such initiative to keep our surgeons informed of our future plans and the introduction of new policies that will be implemented in the coming months. We thank all of the surgeons for coming along and look forward to welcoming you to our next event that is scheduiled for later in the year. We also look forward to our next CME that has been scheduled for the month of June and will include all of our valued community doctors as well

The Oasis Hospital and Anglo Arabian Healthcare join hands The Oasis Hospital in Al Ain was established in 1960 by the American missionary couple Dr. Pat and Dr. Marian Kennedy. It is the oldest hospital in Al Ain and is currently a 200 bed facility.
T
he Oasis Hospital has a remarkable history and is rightly known as the “Birthplace of Leaders for the Nation”. Inaugurated in November, 1960, the Oasis Hospital was the first institution to offer modern medical care in the entire emirate of Abu Dhabi. The hospital initially operated out of a mud building, a guest house that was donated by Sheikh Zayed. A modest cement building housing patients’ rooms and a nurses’ station was constructed in 1964. Up until the 1970s when it added facilities like X-ray, a delivery suite and staff housing, facilities at the hospital remained rudimentary. In 1985, facilities for paediatrics, surgery and obstetrics were added to the hospital. With the addition of ophthalmology and cardiac care services, the hospital has transformed itself from a
maternity hospital into a full-fledged medical facility. Anglo Arabian Healthcare is proud to be associated with Oasis Hospital by taking over the Laboratory Management of the hospital from 01st April 2015. Our CEO, Mr. Mark Adams, whole-heartedly welcomed the team at Oasis Hospital Laboratory into the AAH family and invited them to work together as one team. He also reassured them of our continued support and co-operation always. The fully functional laboratory as of now, houses state-of-the-art machinery and experienced and able Laboratory Technicians who are dedicated to maintaining the quality of service and accuracy. The Lab currently has 17 Lab Technicians with 3 clerks and runs under the able guidance of Veteran Pathologist, Dr. Iman Doss, who has been
associated with Oasis Hospital for over 20 years. With the new hospital building all set to open shortly, the Lab will move to a bigger facility with latest and top quality machines in place, guaranteed to give even quicker results while maintaining the quality and efficiency, which has always been the trademark of the Lab. We look forward to going from strength to strength in unity with The Oasis Hospital teams and to drive towards even greater success and prosperity in the years to come. Under the spotlight: Hidden talents within the AAH Family Working in a fast-paced, busy organization such as Anglo Arabian Healthcare can sometimes lead us to forget to take time to really know our fellow colleagues. With this in mind, I would like to start a new section of the Health Works Newsletter that really shines a light on those of us that have ‘Hidden Talents’.
O
ne such person who has extraordinary talent as an artist and painter is Abdul Razak who joined AAH in 2015 as Head HR, Northern Emirates, AAH. During this interview, Abdul tells us a little about his love of painting and the positive effects his artistry has on his wellbeing helping him to maintain a healthy balance between his busy working life and his precious time with family and friends.
JA: Was there one particular event that triggered your love for painting?
AR: First of all, I have to say that I am not a professional artist at all! It is my hobby. When I am so happy and have time, my painting happens spontaneously or, when I am frustrated and I have time, it also happens!
AR: Landscapes and abstract works painted in acrylics.
JA: How long have you been painting for? AR: I have been painting since my early schooldays, but I have never been regular with it.
AR: School days and the painting competitions maybe… JA: Are you the only artist in your family or do others share your talent? AR: No. My nephew used to paint and my daughter also paints a little bit. JA: What do you enjoy painting most of all and why?
JA: What do you do with your paintings? Are they sold or used for illustrations or exhibitions for example? AR: I very rarely sell any of my paintings, although sometimes I participate in exhibitions. Sometimes, I give my artwork to friends and relatives.
Abdul Razak Head HR, Northern Emirates, AAH Email: abdul.r@amina-hospitals.com
JA: Who is your favorite painter and why? AR: My favorite is an Indian painter called Eswaran and then a painter from the United States called Kevin Hill. Eswaran’s paintings are realistic nature scenes and Kevin’s technique in landscape painting is wonderful as well as time saving. JA: What would you like to achieve through your artistic abilities? AR: I always see painting as a way to balance work and life. Furthermore, colors and an active artistic mind-set, maintain me creatively in life.
If you have a AAH colleague that has a hidden talent, or indeed, if you would like to showcase your talents in the Health Works newsletter to share, I’d love to hear from you! Please get in touch with me at Julie.adams@ angloarabian-healthcare. Thank you!

Nepal Earthquake Anglo Arabian Healthcare are proud to be supporting the people and families of Nepal that have been affected by the recent earthquake disaster. With the group now employing over 1,000 staff, we are in the fortunate position of being able to contribute towards the relief efforts as one, genuinely caring organization. Anglo Arabian Healthcare had set a target to provide 1,000 warm blankets to the men, women and children who have lost their homes and are now sheltering in temporary shelters. The 1,000 Blanket Campaign began on the 3rd of May with the intention to run only for 1 week in order to get the blankets to those in need quickly. Boxes, posters and roll ups were distributed across the Dubai and Northern Emirate facilities and before we knew it, boxes began to fill up! With heartfelt thanks of gratitude to those who have already donated, we are sure that your gesture of compassion can make the difference for families caught up in the disaster.

We would like to thank Pickfords for the donation of packing boxes and materials as well as Biju Ravindran of Classic Printing for his continued and unwavering support over the years. Biju has always supported our awareness events and his generosity has been evident in supplying Nourish, the Ajman Walkathon, Typhoon Haiyan Campaign and now, the Nepal Earthquake Appeal with complimentary printing. Thank you!
‘Unfortunately, we have witnessed one of the most destructive earthquakes, probably the deadliest that we shall see in our lifetime. About 10,000 people have lost their lives and thousands more have been maimed. More than 70,000 houses have been destroyed and as a whole, 8 million people of this economically backward country have been seriously affected. The epic scale of destruction might be much, much more.’ Dr. P C Jacob, Medical Director, Ibin Sina Medical Centre.
Thank you to everyone who supported the 1,000 Blanket Campaign. Together we can and we do make a difference to those in need. Julie Adams Co-Founder & Marketing Director, AAH Email: julie.adams@angloarabianhealthcare.com

Fear Not Challenges! Life is full of challenges. Have you ever noticed the lives of those who are successful? If we study them we can see that most of them have faced lots of challenges in their life, thus they become strong and succeed. Evaluate the end result, Notice that you took risk and survived. You worked hard for something that you achieved. Know that when challenged with another tough situation, you will face it. We always hesitate to take challenges because we are afraid to fail. Definitely, some situations can be handled and some goes out of control. But understand all these challenges gives you strength and courage to face even more challenges with vigor.
C
hallenges makes you strong. Without getting warm eggs do not break. Likewise without facing challenges we cannot achieve anything. Every day of life is a new and strange chapter for us. We face lots of problems unexpectedly, and to solve them you need not be a champion. You should face every challenges as it comes. Sometimes you may fail and sometimes you will defeat them. You should not bother about failure, because it gives you ample experience and courage to face the next challenge. How can we prepare ourselves to face the challenges? Preparing to face challenges is most important. Secure enough courage, trust your self, and be confident on your strength. Listen to your heart that tells you “You can do it”. Realize that if you never step up to the challenges that are a bit
over your head, you have no chance to learn how tall you truly are. Work hard to overcome each challenges. People, life and books can give you good advices but you ultimately decide what to do with it. When you are surrounded by problems you are simultaneously given an opportunity to choose valuable solutions.
Be thankful for each new challenge because it will build your strength and character even more. “When you come across a challenge, look for a way through not a way out” Sheik Mohamed Ali General Manager, Ibin Sina Medical Centre Email: gm@ibinsinahospital.ae
Don’t overreact, when you over react your mind will not be emotionally controlled. You will make decisions that you will regret later. Train yourself to accept frequently changing situations in your life. You will be experienced and learn from many situations. Most people do not like to come out of their comfort zone. They will be lazy to solve any difficult situations.

Spotlight on Health Bay It’s an inspiring time for the Health Bay Group. With expansions scheduled for 2015, we are well on our way towards achieving our goal of becoming one of the strongest healthcare providers in the region.
A
n ambitious programme of expansion projects are currently underway, with more projects in the pipeline for 2016, including the first Health Bay hospital, as we continue to open world class facilities and increase the group’s strength in the region. Here’s a flavour of what we are currently working on:
follow a similar set up to our existing Mirdif polyclinic which provides a range of general healthcare services to the local community. Work is due to start on site soon and the plan is to launch this new clinic post Ramadan and the summer holidays.
New Day Surgery Centre at Al Wasl Road Health Bay Polyclinic - Al Thanya Work has been ongoing at the existing “Al Thanya” facility (situated on Al Wasl Road, just after the junction with Al Thanya Street, hence its name) for the past few months and is nearing completion. We have taken over the villa next door to our existing clinic and are expanding the facility to double in size and become a specialist Bone and Joint Centre, coupled with an Eye and Ear clinic where we will be able to offer high end facilities and treatments including the first ophthalmology facility of its kind in the area.
After much anticipation, work has started at the original Healthy Bay site on Al Wasl Road to convert part of the clinic into a Day Surgery Centre. The project team led by Carien Steenkamp and Vilma Ferguson at Health Bay have been working with the specialists at Amina to develop plans for the new center. A great example of how being part of the wider AAH group can help us all to draw on the clinical and management experience of our colleagues to the benefit of all. The new Day Surgery Centre will focus on Endoscopy initially, with plans to develop the service offering and facilities to encompass other surgical specialties in the near future. Once the Day Surgery is up and running the existing clinic will be re-modelled into three specialist centres; Gastroenterology incorporating the Day Surgery unit, a Skin clinic and a dedicated Children’s Centre.
Health Bay Polyclinic - Al Thanya
Works are nearly complete and it is an exciting time for the team as the adjoining wall is due to come down very soon! We already have a strong contingent of Physiotherapists practising at Al Thanya which we are augmenting with specialist physicians (Osteopaths and Orthopods) to rival local competitors Up and Running, Back on Track and the Dubai Physiotherapy Clinic. We have some promising propositions in the pipeline for the Eye and Ear center but can’t reveal any names at the moment. The new Al Thanya facility is due to open this summer.
Motor City Plans have been approved for a new branch of Health Bay Polyclinic to be located in Detroit House, Motor City. This will

New Villas on Al Wasl Road “The Six Villas” Earlier this year we took over the leases for a complex of 6 residential villas on Al Wasl Rd. Stella Interolizo and Mohamad, of Health Bay Polyclinic have been working hard to arrange all the relevant permissions for conversion to clinics. Work is due to start on site next month with the new clinics opening by the end of the year. The Six Villas, or New Wasl as they are known, will become three facilities: Villas 1-3 will house a Health Bay Polyclinic specialist centre on the ground floor incorporating Neurology, Cardiology, Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Urology as well as Family Medicine, Orthopedics and Dental Care. While the first floor will be a cutting edge Women’s centre incorporating a dedicated Breast Care Centre for screening and treatment and a major centre of excellence for gynaecology and obstetrics as well, as Midwifery services and Well Baby Clinics.
May - 2015
Next door in villa 4 will be our Comprehensive Diagnostic Centre, a branch of Health Bay but playing down the Health Bay links in order to attract business from all clinics in the area. The diagnostic centre will host some of the latest technology for CT and MRI scanning as well as digital X-Ray accompanied by a multifaceted laboratory. The final two villas will be developed into the Oras IVF Fertility Centre.

Singing is Good for your Mind, Body and Soul! As scientists show that choir practice is healthier than yoga, we praise the power of song.
T
he ability to sing is something we all share as human beings all over the world, regardless of colour, race or religion. Whether you think you can sing or not, doesn’t detract from the fact that singing is an excellent form of exercise for your body promoting health and wellbeing – and is a scientifically proven fact. When you sing, musical vibrations move through your body, altering your physical and emotional landscape. Group singing, for those who have done it, is the most exhilarating and transformative of all. It takes something incredibly intimate, a sound that begins inside you, is shared with a roomful of people and it comes back as something even more thrilling: harmony. It’s not surprising that singing in a group, is on the rise. As the popularity of group singing grows, science has been hard at work trying to explain why it has such a calming yet energizing effect on people. What researchers are beginning to discover is that singing is like an infusion of the perfect tranquilizer, the kind that both soothes your nerves and elevates your spirits. The elation may come from endorphins, a hormone released by singing, which is associated with feelings of pleasure. Or it might be from oxytocin, another hormone released during singing, which has been found to alleviate anxiety and stress. It may also surprise you to know that researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, discovered that chorister’s heartbeats actually synchronize and beat as one, when they sing together, bringing about a calming effect that is as beneficial to our health as yoga. In another experiment, scientists asked a group of teenagers to perform three choral exercises – humming, singing a hymn

and chanting – and monitored their heart rhythms during each. They showed that singing has a dramatic effect on heart rate variability, which is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease. “Song is a form of regular, controlled breathing, since breathing out occurs on the song phrases and inhaling takes place

between these,” says Dr Björn Vickhoff, who led the study. “It gives you pretty much the same effect as yoga breathing. It helps you relax, and there are indications that it does provide a heart benefit.” “Singing delivers a host of physical and emotional benefits, including increased aerobic exercise, improved breathing, posture, mindset, confidence and self-esteem,” says Jeremy Hywel Williams, who leads the Llanelli Choral Society in Wales. “While singing alone is good, singing with others can be even better”. Regular exercising of the vocal cords can even prolong life, according to research done by leading vocal coach and singer Helen Astrid, from The Helen Astrid Singing Academy in London. “It’s a great way to keep in shape because you are exercising your lungs and heart. Not only that, your body produces ‘feel good’ hormones called endorphins, which rush around your body when you sing. It’s exactly the same when you eat a bar of chocolate. The good news with singing is that you don’t gain any calories!” If you have ever considered joining a local choir or indeed, forming your own singing group, why put it off any longer? Now you know how much healthier and happier you will be for it, why not start today – as well as it being so good for you, it’s also free!
Keep your heart and mind healthy and get singing!

Central Marketing Activity Update The Marketing Team has been working hard over the last few months to streamline the marketing activities of our new clinic assets, Health Bay Polyclinic Group, and Dr. Oras Medical Centre and integrate the teams, while continuing to provide support to our hospital and clinics in the Northern Emirates.
Sharjah Corniche Hospital Group & Ibin Sina Group
Community Outreach programmes
Typically, there is no lean period in healthcare promotions and as usual the last four months were filled with activities focused on events aimed at brand awareness.
Our team has also been very busy during these months providing free medical screenings to various communities in and around Sharjah and Ajman. Community outreach initiatives remain a favourite activity of our team as it gives us an opportunity to interact directly with potential patients and get feedback as well. It’s even more fun when you get to work with kids!
Media Presence At Doctors Medical Centre in Sharjah we were joined by three new specialistDr. Jaikumar Motwani, (Specialist Paediatrician), Dr. Sumen Yelli (ENT Surgeon) and Dr. Mili Abdul Jaleel (Dermatologist). Dr. Vandana and Dr. Mili appeared in Radio Asia AM and NTV to deliver health education sessions. Dr. Sadaf Memon (GP) and Dr. Vandana Arjun (Dental Surgeon) also appeared in several health awareness shows in the popular radio station - HUM FM. Owing to its popularity we have extended our participation in this channel for an additional six talks on Saturdays. The doctors in the Ibin Sina Group have also had regular media presence. Dr. Mini P.G. (Ob/Gyn), Dr. Roy Sebastian (Internal Medicine) and Dr. Ratheeshkumar (Paediatrician) were features in health programs targeting their area of expertise.

We had such a good time with the kids at Scholars International Academy, Sharjah when we participated as the medical service provider for the school’s Carnival Day. Dr Vandana Arjun guided over 240 students on oral hygiene and correct brushing techniques after which students were given free oral check-ups. In addition to providing the first aid at the event, we also screened visitors for blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. We also conducted an Oral Health Screening camp at Al Amana Private School in Ajman. We conducted free medical camps and health awareness sessions in association with Royal Academy School, Ajman, Al Manama Hypermarket, Safeer Hypermarkets, etc. and conducted a 3-Day mega Health Awareness
campaign at Sinopec. 540 Sinopec employees were screened for Cholesterol, BMI, and Blood Sugar. Dr. Naveed, GP at Ibin Sina Medical Centre gave a lecture on First Aid and Basic Life Support and answered queries. A more recent health awareness program was held for employees of the Government Driving School in Sharjah where we screened over 100 staff for blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol. We have secured Corporate Medical Service agreements with the following corporates and schools. • Gulf Agency Company - Sharjah Port • VTech Group - Hamriyah Free Zone • Ansar Harford - Ajman Free zone • Emirates Medical Centre - Ajman • Bloomington Academy - Ajman
Surgeons Get-together Sharjah Corniche Hospital has been welcoming Community Surgeons for the past 4 years to avail the Operation Theatre facility for surgical cases. To show our appreciation for their support over the years, a get together was held at the Hotel Holiday International in Sharjah. The senior management team of Sharjah Corniche hospital, including Dr. Mahesh, CEO

welcomed the guests, who also shared valuable feedback about our services.
A new brand in the making Concord Medical Centres Our Concord brand is slowly but surely coming to life across the assets. While the collaterals and signage have been given the Concord look, the medical centres are beginning to receive a facelift, as needed. The Signage is often the public’s first introduction to the brand and it gives us the opportunity to make a positive impression. As part of rebranding our Medical Centers in Northern Emirates we have started replacing the internal and external signage and giving new set of colours for the facilities, which were
Health Bay Polyclinic As soon as the Health Bay Polyclinic and AAH partnership was finalized, the marketing department began planning to support and promote the already popular and well-respected Health Bay brand. We then set out to meet the majority of physicians and specialists across the three Health Bay branches to find out areas of opportunity for marketing. In the last two months, we have carried out plenty of activities that range from: 1. Internal networking events to allow the doctors to mingle and get to know each other better which helps to boost internal referrals. 2. Standardizing the collateral across the group to ensure each department has a brochure with the services and doctors highlighted, and that plenty of patient

education material will be developed. 3. External events such as the Dubai Nursery Show and an upcoming event at Dubai Ladies Club to highlight our specialists and services as well as enjoy the opportunity to network within a new and important target group. 4. Holding a successful World Health Day campaign on April 7th and 8th where we provided free blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure checkups to the Mirdif residents. 5. Developing strategic and targeted advertisements in magazines such as Ahlan, and Time Out Kids promoting our mole mapping and thyroid screening services. With the introduction of new services and doctors, we have plenty more ideas and activities planned in the pipeline that include: online and digital marketing, healthcare packages and school outreach programs.

and an antenatal scheduler that can help guide pregnant women on the various consultations, scans and tests required during their pregnancy journey. In addition, we welcomed Dr. Ahmed to the team of physicians, and are in the midst of planning activities and campaigns to promote the current trio of Gynaecologists. One such campaign is a vaccination drive to be implemented in May in association with pharmaceutical company, GSK. We aim to raise awareness on Cervical Cancer and Hepatitis A, and to encourage women to ask their doctor about necessary vaccinations to prevent these diseases. Saga of Ageing
Personal reflections by Dr. P. C. Jacob
L
ast week suddenly something went wrong with the CD player in my car; it plays the same song over and over, a technical glitch, may be a wear and tear malfunction expected of all ageing things. All my technical wisdom failed to fix it; no choice, I am impelled to listen to that old song a hundred times as I commute to my work place. The catchy chorus started reverberating through my ears, mind and soul.
“Everybody wanna go to heaven But nobody wanna go now” Kenny Chesney’s 2008 top Country hit song; yes I do want to go to heaven, but as the song goes “I wouldn’t mind waiting at least a hundred years or so” before I get my wings to soar high to visit my mansion high above the clouds. The paradox perplexed me! I do want to inherit that heaven as everybody else but I don’t want to die now and leave this world of worries and sorrows to gain that eternal bliss and peace. A terrible chill of fear ran down my spine. If ageing is the natural course that leads to the ultimate demise then these wrinkles and extra lines on my face, my sunken eyes, sagging face and the drooping jowls are the stigmata of the process of ageing, that I realized, already started simmering my tissues. Questions are numerous; when, where and how did my ageing start? My mischievous mind began searching the secrets of my ontogenesis. My ageing started before I was born; medical

wisdom unravelled the secrets of embryology before my inquisitive mind and yes, it’s true that ageing starts from the very moment of conception. Life is a bundle of contradictions. Though we hate ageing, our life’s ambition is always to grow old and not succumb to any premature death. We exhaust our vitamin bottles and aspirin canisters to stay young to grow old. We get Botox, do all toning and lifting, filling and tucking to retain our glamour to grow old! With the dawn of the new millennium we are witnessing sea changes happening at breath taking pace in our existence. The population is ageing; the demographic dynamics are tilted to ‘grey heads’ and the baby boom is withering. WHO predicted that by 2050 there will be two million centenarians across the globe draining major chunks of health care resources. The study of ageing is ‘Gerontology’ for life science experts, the art and craft of caring the elderly is ‘Geriatrics’ for the medical doctors and the morbid fear of getting old is ‘Gerontophobia’ for the Psychologists. But all these words are etymologically related to “Geron” for old man in Greek. I searched a lot to find a good definition for ageing. Most of the definitions divulge incomplete or indefinite ideas; but the simple expression “genetically determined and environmentally modulated process of becoming older” attracted most of my attention. Derivatively aging is the process that converts “a fit organism (for its environment) to a less fit organism”. For the layman it’s just the passing of time! We are social beings often involved in too many complex social institutions or situations requiring constant interaction with others. We are sure to age but the slow process of ageing spreads over

many decades. The intricacies of these profuse and protracted interactions impart a lot of dimensions to the ageing process. Chronological ageing: the most popular aspect of aging that everybody is quite familiar with, denoted by the number of candles on your birthday cake. Biological ageing: the physical and physiological changes happening in our body systems that slow us down but accelerate our journey to the final resting place. Psychological ageing: the total changes accumulated over the years related to our attitudes, feelings, mental functioning and personality that often lead to withdrawals and rejections. Social ageing: refers to the changes in roles and relationships of an individual especially in familiar domains; reciprocally it is moulded and modulated by the social perception of ageing by the society. There are hundreds of theories of ageing. The physiologists to Psychologists have their own versions; the umpteen religious reasons and reasonings are convincing to the ardent devotees. But the scientific explanations can be grouped into programmed theories and wear and tear theories. When they found out that cancer cells are immortal the scientists celebrated the landmark discovery of ‘telomeres’ that confer the ability to these cells to divide incessantly. Telomeres are end structures of your chromosomes just like the end caps of the shoe laces .With each cell division the telomere shortens to reach a critical level beyond which the cell cannot divide further. So the scientists call it the ‘molecular clock’ that programs the cell division. Cancer cells have a replenishing mechanism by which the telomeric length is constantly maintained above the critical level promoting perpetual cell division. So the scientists are working hard to boost the telomeric length of chromosomes to lengthen our lives.
Dr. P. C. Jacob Medical & CME Director, Specialist Paediatrician, Ibin Sina Medical Centre
Turritopsis dohrnii is an immortal jelly fish in the Mediterranean Sea and deciphering the details of its biologic immortality may hold the clues to revert the ageing process to delay death. When men and machines merge miracles may happen to prolong life but the quest for immortality which was lost when the first couple was driven out of the Garden of Eden, may continue. Meanwhile “live your life and forget your age” B+…Positive ageing should be our motto while we embark on life’s long one way journey. It can be attained by maintaining pleasant attitudes, keeping fit and friendly and enjoying fully in life till the last. Smile, stay connected, boot and boost your brain and await the final whistle. If you do, please don’t forget to provide us with your feedback and to share your own special culinary stories and delights with your colleagues here at AAH.
BOBOTIE
BANANA BREAD
Pronounced ba-boor-tea, the national dish of South Africa is a delicious mixture of curried meat and fruit with a creamy golden topping
As a busy working mother, I am always looking for something healthy yet simple to prepare and make for my children’s packed lunch. This easy recipe is just fantastic as it not only tastes amazing, it lasts well and is very easy to make. I often make this with bananas that are just on the point of being over-ripe if they have been left too long in the fruit bowl.
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • •
2 slices white bread 2 onions, chopped 25g butter 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1kg packet lean minced beef 2 tbsp madras curry paste 1 tsp dried mixed herbs 3 cloves
• • • • • •
5 allspice berries 2 tbsp peach or mango chutney 3 tbsp sultanas 6 bay leaves 300ml full-cream milk 2 large eggs
PREPARATION METHOD 1. Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/ Gas 4. Pour cold water over the bread and set aside to soak. 2. Meanwhile, fry the onions in the butter, stirring regularly for 10 mins until they are soft and starting to colour. Add the garlic and beef and stir well, crushing the mince into fine grains until it changes colour. Stir in the curry paste, herbs, spices, chutney, sultanas and 2 of the bay leaves with 1 tsp salt and plenty of ground black pepper. 3. Cover and simmer for 10 mins. Squeeze the water from the bread, then beat into the meat mixture until well blended. Tip into an oval ovenproof dish (23 x 33cm and about 5-6cm deep). Press the mixture down well and smooth the top. You can make this and keep chilled in the refrigerator 1 day ahead. 4. For the topping, beat the milk and eggs with seasoning, then pour over the meat. Top with the remaining bay leaves and bake for 35-40 mins until the topping is set and starting to turn golden Karin Helene Steyn

Editor’s Note W
e are well and truly stepping forward into summer with the temperatures rising and Ramadan almost upon us.
As we enter the Holy month, our thoughts turn inwardly as we seek to take stock of our behaviors and attitudes towards others and ourselves. Ramadan is a quiet time of reflection that gives us all the opportunity to practice contemplation and gratitude for the things we sometimes take for granted such as good health and precious time spent with family and friends. The recent earthquake disaster in Nepal shocked and moved the entire world to rally together in order to provide much needed humanitarian assistance to those who had lost their homes, their livelihoods and families. I was incredibly proud of the support that the Anglo Arabian Healthcare 1,000 Blankets Campaign received across the entire company and to those of the AAH
Family who sprang into action immediately to help at weekends as well as those who selflessly donated. I’m pleased to H ams ctor, AA Julie Ader & Marketing Dire say we safely delivered d n Co-Fou all of the collected boxes direct to the Red Crescent in Garhoud and that our shipment is on it’s way to the stricken region. THANK YOU ALL! The earthquake was also great lesson for all of us in that as much as we try to control events around us, stressing and worrying about what the future may hold, we really are ultimately at the mercy of God and Mother Nature. Thank you to everyone that has made this issue of Health Works the very best yet! I am so grateful to those of you who help to make our newsletter the success it is through your contributions and I hope that you enjoy reading it, as much as I enjoy creating it. Special thanks must go to Shiju, our fantastic graphic designer who works incredibly hard to support all artistic endeavors across the group including the lovely International Nurses Day certificates, never complains and always has such a wide, warm smile for everyone.
