MONDAY, APRIL 9th Noon til 7 p.m.
The season of spring is here, and it is time to decide where to put your garden. Select an area in full sun and access to water. Sometimes a raised bed is the answer. If you don’t have space, use containers. There is nothing like the thrill of picking and tasting your first tomato or green beans. You do reap what you sow!

NYSEG and RG&E, subsidiaries of Iberdrola USA, can help customers jump start their spring cleaning by recycling household energy hogs - those second refrigerators or freezers that have outlived their usefulness. Customers who participate in the recycling program will receive a $30 check and stand to save as much as $150 a year in electricity charges. “Participating in this program is an easy way to instantly improve your home’s energy efficiency, and start saving money,” said Mark S. Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E. “It’s as simple as making a phone call to schedule a time to have us pick up your old refrigerator or freezer.” NYSEG Customers: To schedule free pickup of your second refrigerator or freezer, call 1-877-691-0021 or visit www.nyseg.com/ energyefficiencyprograms/. Second refrigerators and freezers, often kept in garages or basements, are usually older models that may use as much as three times more electricity to run than newer models built to higher energy efficiency standards. Units to be recycled must be in working order and have an inside volume of between 10 and 30 cubic feet. ________

A Message from the Faith Bible Baptist Church Bible Text: Luke 15:11-24
The Prodigal Son
11 ¶ And he said, A certain man had two sons: 12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.
This is one of the most famous parables that Jesus ever taught. It’s about a young man who became known as the “Prodigal Son.” The word prodigal means “exceeding or recklessly wasteful.” He seems to represent many men and women today on a far and fast journey away from God.
13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. 14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
Commentary about the Young Man:
15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
His Desire (v12) - Money! He didn’t want to wait till his dad died to get his inheritance. He wanted it now! But we are warned, ”For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” 1 Timothy 6:10
16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
His Detour (v13) - Erred from the faith he did! He left his father behind and went on a journey into a far country. Far, far away from the safety and wisdom of his father.
17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
His Dissatisfaction (v14) - After wasting all his money in that far country, including on harlots (v30), he began to be in want. He was empty, void, and wanting.
18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,
His Degradation (v15, 16) - He ended up in the pig pen of life eating what the pigs left for him. The lusts of the flesh will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.
19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. 20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
His destitution (v16) - when his money ran out, his “friend” went out. Nobody gave to him. His Decision (v17) - “when he came to himself…” Thank God he came to his senses! He decided to return to his father. He confessed his sin and was willing to be a servant the rest of his life.
21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
His Dad (v20-24) - His father was perfect. He had compassion and received back his wayward son. He gave him a robe (which represents the righteousness of Christ), a ring (which represents royalty) and a roundup dinner (which represents restoration to fellowship). What a wonderful God our Heavenly Father is to returning sinners. Jesus said, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out,” John 6:37. Why not come back to the father through Jesus Christ His son right now?

22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: 23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

This award is given annually to a NYS Department of Corrections employee who exhibits outstanding contributions as an employee and a community member. Correction Officer WirthHessel has served the past 15 years as the facility’s Employee Assistance Program Coordinator providing valuable resources to staff and their families. She

TWO LOCATIONS IN THE SOUTHTOWNS through the lens of your company’s mission. “If you do nothing else,” noted McCartney. “A competitive analysis must be done every year. That is a strategy to increasing your sales. Those who can compete economically will survive.” To find out your competitive advantage, you have to know what your competition is doing. She counsels businesses on creating a chart to outline? 1) 3 competitors; 2) identify 20 factors that you’ll look at regarding the competition (i.e, location, website, pricing strategy, term of their business, who their employees are; their promotional strategy; what’s their speciality); and 3) identify what you’re going to change in response to your competition. “This should be done annually,” described Mc-Cartney.

“Your competition is changing every year so you have to be changing too.” The SBDC’s Fred Bristol discussed the free energy efficiency study available for small businesses through the NYSERDA. The SBDC will assist your business in filling out the Consolidated Funding Application and help obtain financial incentives for energy saving measures. Bristol can be reached at bristolfa@ buffalostate.edu. There is a monthly “Survive and Thrive” seminar on starting a business hosted by the SBDC. The next one is on Wednesday, April 11, from 8:30am to noon at Buff State’s Burchfield Penney Art Museum. The Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce will host another business development seminar in April. The Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce hosted a seminar for small business on “Taking Your Business To The Next Level”. Speakers Susan McCartney and Fred Bristol from the Small Business Development Center at Buff State talked about growing a business and what the SBDC can offer. The event was held at Cala’s in Derby, and open to local businesses as well as members of the Chamber of Commerce for EvansBrant, hamburg, Eden and Gowanda. Susan outlined the strategic planning process for an existing business which should be reassessed annually. “First, assess what is the purpose of the business, the mission may have changed since you started up, given changes in environment and changes in competition”, she outlined. “Second, assess the vision, what’s the five-year outlook? To sell the business? Have the kids take over the business? Once this is identified, you need to assess what tax strategy matches your five-year plan? What HR strategy?” McCartney outlined the steps for a SWOT analysis: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. “Set up a two-hour block of time with your key people including financial; ideally, this would include someone from outside the company but within the industry,” she described. The SWOT components will be assessed

2012 LS EAGLES TO ATTEMPT FEAT NEVER DONE
The 2012 Lake SHore Eagles are attempting to accomplish a feat never achieved by any team in school history. Win back the back titles, The2011 team became only the fifth team in school history to win an ECIC title, the last three teams to do so struggled, two of them finished last. This years Eagles hope to rewrite history. The squad will be led by Second Team All Western New York selection, junior Christ Conley. “He’s one of the best hitters I’ve ever coached,” said coach Bob Kowal. Conley not only hits for power but for average as well, making him very dangerous. An excellent catcher, Christ will also play first and pitch. The Eagles are very solid up the middle with shortstop Tyler Mascio, a sophomore, junior Bill Pinter at second, and junior Dane Cala in centerfield. “It’s the best core I’ve had at Lake Shore, those four positions are solid. At third base three year starter Curtis Cala returns, seniors Jason Mende, Jeremy Martin, and Austin Van Slycke all return in the outfield. At first base Matt Brzozowiec, Matt Kardach, and Ryan Joslyn will all see time. Tyler Freeman and RJ Mancini will see time. Charl ie West and Brett Klaczyk are right handed and left handed DH candidates, whilelefty Justin Budniewski has been a pleasant surprise in the outfield and on the mound. First year senior Kevin Nicander adds depth to the outfield. The big question mark is replacing Brian Barry and Ben Senior on the mound, Barry pitching at ECC, and Senior is pitching at Fredonia State. Returnees include Martin and Cala, who had good seasons for both the Varsity and CEBA. Right now Martin is sidelined with an ankle injury and Cala is coming off wrist surgery in the winter, the Eagles are crossing their collective fingers. Junior Matt Kardacnotes Koh has emerged as the team’s ace,

and Conley it’s closer. Joslyn, Brzozowiec, Budniewski, and Freeman all pitched well in a scrimmage vs Bishop Timon. “It’s a very deep staff, but we’ll have to see how effective it is”, notes Kowal. The teams league opener is Monday, April 2, at Williamsville East. Kowal, a social studies teacher says it bluntly. “Let’s make history that other teams will look at in future generations!” ________

SCS STUDENTS COMPLETE WRITING PROJECT The Eighth Grade class at Southtowns Catholic School recently completed a writing project in their Spanish class. The project was to write a description of another student in the class which consisted of at least ten sentences, written completely in Spanish, using a wide variety properly written nouns, verbs, adjectives, articles, etc. The students were assigned a name of another student that they had to keep secret and complete the essay in a way that others in the class could guess who he/she was without a name. The essays needed to
include their likes/dislikes, physical descriptions and plans for the future. Each student then read their descriptions to the class in Spanish and the class had to guess who the person was. Southtowns Catholic School offers Spanish classes from Grades Kindergarten through 8. Spanish class is offered 5 days a week for forty minutes for all 7th and 8th graders. The frequency of the classes better prepares the students for future success in High School. Pictured: Louise Koessler reading her essay to the 8th Grade Class.

Ms. Glidden plays the violin and is the associate concertmaster of the BPO. She talked about her education, her job duties and her busy schedule. The students asked many great questions and learned quite a bit. Ms. Glidden was more than happy to share her knowledge, expertise and experiences. She then played an excerpt from a violin solo by Beethoven. The orchestra played a section of a piece they had worked on and she gave some good tips and advice to improve on it. She coached them through bowing techniques, dynamics, and vibrato. It was a very enjoyable experience fro everyone involved! _________ _________
Do you have gently worn gowns, bridesmaid dress, business suits or formal attire that is taking up space in your closets? Are you looking to donate such items? Well, Lake Shore High School has a win-win scenario for you; the high school is once again collecting gently worn gowns for this year’s prom season. Last year, over 100 gowns and dresses were donated, and all 100 dresses went! This is not simply a charity event; it is a practical way for all Lake Shore ladies to find great dresses without having to spend $400 plus on a dress most likely worn one time. Girls may leave the event with multilple dresses and not have to spend a dime because all of the gowns are free! Please consider donating your female-formal wear and/or gently worn suits for men too for our “Duds for Dudes” program. All donated dresses may be droped off to Mr. Jeff Connors at Lake Shore High School.
