EASTER BUNNY AT EVANS TOWN PARK

On Saturday, March 24th, the Easter Bunny hopped over to the Evans Town Park for an Eater Egg Hunt.

Although there was rain and drizzle, there were many smiling faces and the Easter Bunny had a special treat for all the kids involved.

The winners of the big prizes were: ages 3-4 yrs.

DOROTHY L. BRINKMAN Dorothy L. Brinkman, of Farnham died April 1, 2012 at age 90. She was the beloved wife of the late Fred W. Brinkman; loving mother of the late Frederick Boyd Brinkman; daughter of the late Edward M. and Myrtle (Rosenhahn) Brinkman; sister of the late Virginia J. Massing; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Farnham.

Dorothy was a graduate of Masten Park High School.

She worked in her husbands Insurance office for many years. She also had several jobs when she was younger working at Curtis Wright during WWll as a secretary and riviter, Chevrolet Plant, the Veterans Administration and the National Maritime Union Office in Buffalo. She enjoyed Ballroom dancing with her husband, and belonged to dance clubs in Angola, Silver Creek and Dunkirk. Memorials may be made to either the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, or the Farnham Volunteer Fire Department. Arrangements were by the Addison Funeral Home, Inc., Angola. ________ RICHARD P. MILLER Funeral services were held on Tuesday, at Most Precious Blood Church, Angola for Richard P. From April 10-20 at the William Seneca Administration Building, visitors can view stunning paintings, colorful beadwork, creative corn husk, and beautiful pottery created by native artist who continue to keep their culture alive through their art.

The Native Roots Artists Guild’s mission is to maintain a support network for Native Haudenosaunee artists, perpetuate native culture, and promote community a w a re ne s s a nd

appreciation of native arts. The guild ensures the beauty, quality, and collectability of authentic Indian arts and crafts which makes each piece of artwork a unique reflection of Native American heritage.

“Expressions of Origins and Meanings” will run from April 10-April 20, 2012, at the William Seneca Administration Building, Route 438, Irving, NY, and is open Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30 p.m. There will be a weekend vendor event Saturday, April 14 from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., when the public may meet and purchase from the artist.

The Brant-Evans Girl Scouts Troops 853 & 748 took a field trip to Dan’s Restaurant in the Village of Angola on March 21, 2012, accompanied by leaders: Valerie Stonitsch and Megan Emhoff. They learned different roles of the restaurant business to earn a badge. After learning these roles, the girls were able to perform them by serving actual food and beverages to one another.

SCS 8TH GRADER COMPETES IN GYMNASTICS STATE COMPETITION

Emilee Chiavetta of Angola competed in the Level 8 Gymnastics State Competition on Sunday, April 1st in East Rochester, New York. She competed against Level 8 gymnasts from all over New York State at the thirteen year old age group. Emilee’s all around score of 35.80 placed her twelveth in the State. She also placed eleventh on the balance beam with a 9.0 and twelveth on the vault with a 8.9.

Emilee is the daughter of Mike and Kellie Chiavetta of Angola. She attends Southtowns Catholic School in Lakeview, where she will graduate from eighth grade in June.

Emilee will attend Immaculata Academy in the fall. _______

Thursday, April 26, 2012 the 6th Annual Buffalo’s Smartest Company Trivia Competition presented by SEFCU will take place at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens in Depew. The event to benefit Cradle Beach will start at 6:00 p.m.

The trivia contest will determine which Western New York company can claim the title of being the brainiest business in Buffalo. Last year’s winner, The Buffalo News will be on hand to defend their title and the coveted trophy.

Teams of five collected pledges prior to the event and will compete win a multiple-choice electronicbased trivia game starting at 7:00 p.m. Sponsors of this year’s Buffalo’s Smartest Company include-SEFCU, The Buffalo News, Buzz Time, Doran & Murphy, PLLC and Lumsden & McCormick, LLP. Prizes will be awarded to the top fundraising individual and team.

All proceeds from the Buffalo’s Smartest Company Trivia Competition will enable Cradle Beach to provide summer enrichment camping opportunities to nearly 700 children, respite services to 128 individuals who are developmentally desabled and year-round academic, mentoring and tutoring assistance through Project SOAR for 60 children at Lovejoy Discovery School PS#43 in Buffalo.

The Middle School Students of Southtowns Catholic School recently competed in a Science Fair on March 29. Each student from grades 6th through 8th were expected to develop a Science Project that followed the criteria for a successful project.

The criteria included hypothesis, infer, predict/ observe, measure and classify, among other things.

H O N US E E P O LIONS CLUB MEMBER HONORED At the regular monthly meeting of The Evans Township Lions Club, Inc., member Jeannette Wright was recognized for her dedication and commitment to the Lions Club motto, “We Serve.” Lion Jeanette has been a member since 2004. She has unselfishly demonstrated her caring and compassion by her involvement in many of the local Lions Club activities.

As chairperson of the club’s “Sunshine Committee,” which is responsible not only for communicating birthday good wishes as well as condolences to members’ families and other town residents, she also coordinates get well wishes to members. ANNUAL WALK FOR AUTISM AWARENESS

With the intention of raising $250,00, more than 2000 Western New Yorkers are expected to participate in teh 13th Annual Summit Walk for Autism Awareness on Saturday, April 28, at Summit Educational Resorces, 150 Stahl Road in Amherst. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with opening ceremonies starting at 10 a.m. Participants can register and/or donate online at www.summitwalk. org Stephen Anderson, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of Summit, announced that Duane Paddock, President and Chief Executive Officer of Paddock Chevrolet, and Jeffrey Zimmer, President of Reeds Jewelers/ Jenss Decor, will serve as honorary chairs of the event with a goal of raising $250,000 to support Summit’s many programs for children and young adults, from birth through age 21, who are challenged by autism and other developmental disabilities.

“Our walk has a two-fold purpose,” Dr. Anderson said. “First, and most importantly, we hope to help raise awareness of autism which now affects one in every 88 children according to a report from The Centers for Disease Control which was released on March 29. Secondly, our goal is to raise $250,000 to support programs for the 1500 Western New York children we serve each year,” he said.

“Western New Yorkers are known for generously supporting worthy endeavors. I hope my support will motivate others in our community to get involved in some way to support Summit and the work they do for children with autism and their families,” Mr. Paddock said.

“With more and more children diagnosed with autism, the need for the services Summit offers continues to skyrocket. I’m very pleased to offer my support, and hope others in the community will join with me, to help kids and their familes throughout

IA HOSTS BIENNIAL CAREER DAY

SS PETER AND PAUL PRINCIPAL SLIMED Students at SS Peter & Paul School in Hamburg recently celebrated reaching a special milestone.

Students were given the task of embarking on he 100,000 Minute Reading Challenge in January during Catholic Schools Week.

They were encouraged to find a good book to read 15 minutes until March 9.

If every student read 15 minutes a day for that time period the entire school would reach the goal of 100,000 minutes.

School Librarian Anne Marie Maggio sought out school Principal Patrick Riester to get ideas to help inspire the students to reach their goal. “I asked him what he would be willing to do,” said Maggio. To help

encourage the students’ reading, Riester said that he would be willing to be slimed as a reward for the students hard work.

The challenge, which ended on Friday, March 9, saw students meeting their goal of 100,000 minutes. “I knew they could do it,” said Maggio.

When it came down to decide who would have the honor of sliming Riester, it was decided that whoever read the most would be rewarded the honor. Fourth grade students Joseph DeMaria won the honor to slime the principal having read 7,314, which is a little over 121 hours.

SCS SCIENCE FAIR SCS students presented their Science Fair projects at the annual Science Fair.

This year’s winner was grade 6 student Eleanore Hale. Her experiment asked the question, “Which Plant Grows Better in a Different Structural Environment?”

Plants were grown in 2 greenhouses and a PVC pipe system. She had to have a hypothesis, list materials, show procedures, talk about the experiment, list her observations and then have a conclusion.

Answering the question, “What do you want to do when you grow up?” is a question every student will invariably be asked during their years in high school.

It’s never an easy question to answer, and guessing at how one might enjoy a career field without experiencing it first-hand is an inexact science to say the least.

To help students in planning for the future, Immaculata Academy recently held its Biennial Career and Leadership Day, hosting 30 professionals to present their varied professions on their career and fielded questions from interested students. Students rotated through the day to different speakers scheduled for them based on their stated career interests. From a lawyer at a prominent local law firm to a fashion designer for infant gear, speakers represented diverse career interests and gave students the opportunity to hear the highs and lows of their career as well as the education it requires and the work it takes to get there.

“The Career and Leadership Day presentations are important because they give the students a realistic understanding of what a career entails,” said Saima Horab, director of student services.

“Sometimes (students) have this glamorized idea of what a career is,” Horab said.

“They need to know what it takes to get there, to be successful. (Career and Leadership Day) gives them a perspective from people in the field that live that life every day.”

The day opened with Shannon Filbert presenting the keynote address to the student body. Filbert is an attorney with the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo,

Inc. and a graduate of West Seneca East High School.

She opened her address by saying that a little over a decade ago she sat in a high school career day assembly and thought her plan would be to move to Florida and become a professional dancer. Later, at 16, a car accident left her paralyzed from the neck down. “She’s an example of what we try to teach our kids every dayperseverance, character, overcoming obstacles and setting goals and accomplishing them,” Horab said.

“We all have goals and it might take a different pathway to get there, but don’t give up on your goals-make it happen.”

LS FRESHMAN ANALYZE SCHOOL BULLYING

Currently in Lake Shore 2015: Freshmen Seminar, Students have been studying the nature of bullies and why/how they bully. As we are all well-aware, bullying (specifically cyberbullying is a huge problem in schools today, and not addressing it in schools can and has had dangerous consequences (retaliation, “bullycide” etc.) Therefore, Lake Shore High School and the District specifically have taken a proactive approach to addressing bullying at all levels. In fact, last week Barabara Coloroso, bullying specialist, visited Lake Shore to talk to parents and teachers alike about her book, Bullies, The Bullied and Bystanders, and now Mr. Connors is using her material in Lake Shore 2015: Freshmen Seminar to better educate our children.

Students are analyzing why kids bully (usually they are insecure) and how they bully verbally, socially and sometimes physically.

In addition, students are also learning the many dangers that come with

MySpace, FormSpring cyberbul-lying today, and how Facebook, Twitter, and texting can have real dangers when it comes to bullying.

Harassment and cyberbullying on these sites have resulted in teen suicides and other negative behaviors.

Students are learning that once something is sent or posted, anyone can retrieve it, copy it, print it or forward it; there is no taking it back.

Therefore, technological literacy is being stressed because, let’s face it, the Internet is not going anywhere, so let’s make sure we know our rights and limitations.

Freshmen project posters exhibiting the dangers of bullying will be on display in the high school main hallway, and we welcome all visitors to come and see them the next time you are at one of our Lake Shore School Board meetings.
