LS BUDGET DISCUSSIONS TO CONTINUE

The Lake Shore Central School District Board of Education discussed the 2012-2013 budget during its workshop meeting on March 6.

Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Finance Daniel Pacos presented a draft copy of the proposed budget for consideration by the Board.

The draft proposal, prepared by the members of the administrative team and budget committee, adheres to the New York State “tax cap” and includes reductions in personnel, services, supplies and materials and contractual services.

The District Budget Committee and District Administration recommended reductions from preliminary projections of staffing, services, supplies, programs and materials and endorsed entering into an efficiency program for energy consumption reductions.

Fourteen District employees opted to participate in a retirement incentive that will generate a cost savings of $533,890 in the coming school year, with five of these positions eliminated as a result of the retirement.

In addition, tow elementary teachers, five secondary full-time equivalent teaching positions, one personnel clerk and one groundskeeper position totaling $577,461 were removed from the proposed budget.

Additional reduction recommendations were made to reach the proposed tax levy, including: reducing the athletic program by -4.15 percent, reducing summer counseling work, publications, fees, technology, professional development and technology.

During the workshop session, Board members and administration discussed the impact of these cuts on educational programming and district operations.

“We have tried to align staff cuts with enrollment trends. However, these are reductions that will impact educational programming for our students,” Mr. Pacos said.

The Board is expected to adopt the 2012-2013 budget during the March 20 meeting.

Students were given a hands on opportunity to learn by completing a Science Lab that involved dissecting perch. Students were amazed when they were able to identify internal organs.

BENJAMIN LOOS TO BE ORDAINED

Benjamin Loos, son of Rev. Donald and Maxine Loos of Derby, has completed his studies with Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, culminating in his Masters of Divinity Degree. Born and raised in Angola, Ben’s grammar school education was at W.T. Hoag, J.T. Waugh and Trinity Lutheran in West Seneca; he graduated from St. Francis High School, Athol Springs.

After receiving his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Communication at Houghton College, Houghton, New York, he went on to 5 years of Seminary education.

This included a year of study at Cambridge University,

Cambridge, England, where he concentrated in translating the Old Testament Hebrew and New Testament Greek languages. His year of vicarage was at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, VA. Benjamin, his wife Christine, and their son, Josiah, will be moving to Connecticut where Ben’s Divine Call is to the parishes of Zion Lutheran in Bridgeport, and First Lutheran in Greenwich.

On Saturday, March 17, 3:00 p.m., he will be ordained into the Holy Ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod in a worship service with Holy Communion at St. John Lutheran Church, 962 Gold St., Angola. All are invited to attend. ________

The teenage years are tough, and many students find it hard to cope with all that is expected of them.

Where some students learn how to manage their stress, others suffer from anxiety and depression. Students are learning that, if not addressed, these conditions may lead to more stress and more serious physical, emotional and social issues.

Specifically, students are learning the ways in which some people cope by exercising, sleeping and

eating well and taking time for themselves. At the same time, some people require counseling and prescription drugs. Students have learned and discussed the positives and negatives of prescription drugs and the dangers that come when people abuse them.

Students at SS. Peter & Paul School were treated to a special breakfast as a reward for their hard work and to celebrate their accomplishment as being named Student of the Month.

The breakfast, which was held Wednesday, February 29, featured Students of the Month for the months of December, January and February.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield is presenting Relaxation Techniques: Massage Therapy, Yoga and Meditation at the Evans Senior Center on March 19 at 10am.

The presentation provides information about relaxation techniques for stress management, disease prevention, and optimal health. Hands on activities include Yoga Breath, Quiet Reflection, Affirmation Meditation and Developing your own Mantra.

PIZZA PARTY FOR TEEN DROP IN

The Lake Shore Association of Christian Churches (LSACC) and Samaritan Counseling Center (SCC) of Western New York are expanding the services offered at the new Angola center by offering a Teen Drop In night each Monday from 6:30-8 pm.

To celebrate the new Teen Drop In night, which is open to all Middle School and High School youth, LSACC and SCC will host a Grand Opening Pizza Party on Monday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 930 Lake St., Angola. The Community Room can be accessed by the rear entrance.

Teen Drop In is designed to be an evening for teens to relax and unwind from the stresses they may experience daily in school, in sports, and in their social interactions. Teens can play games, listen to music, watch videos, or just sit and chill.

At least two counselors or mentors will be available to the teens each Monday evening to provide supervision of activities. Teen Drop In hopes to offer a variety of activities in the future based on the interests of the youth participants, such as Wii Nights and live music jams.

Teen Drop In is offered in addition to the counseling services that are provided by appointment to individuals, couples and families. EVANS TIM HORTONS IS RATED #1 IN CORPORATE STANDARDS

The Town of Evans Tim Hortons, which recently celebrated its fifth anniversary, has been rated number one in standards of cleanliness, hospitality and efficiency by the corporate headquarters for the second year in a row. The local store was in competition with the traditional (stand alone stores) Tim Hortons located in the Eastern United States market, including the owners other store in Eden.

The annual award is based on the results of surprise inspections to each of the traditional stores in the market area. Previous to last year, the top honor has eluded the Evans store as they were in the top three high scoring stores in the eastern half of the United States from 2007-2009.

Franchise owners Randy and Kim Schmitz were

thrilled to announce the award to their employees last week.

“To have been awarded this honor two years in a row is just thrilling and it has reinforced the high standards we have set for our store. We credit this award to our hard-working and diligent staff, which is responsible for the stores operation, inside and out” said the Schmitz’s.

“The success of this store in our community is no surprise to the Town”, said Lori Szewczyk, director of Community Development for the Town of Evans. “As a regular Tim Hortons customer, I can understand why this location is #1”, she said.

On Wednesday, March 14, the Lake Shore High School Music Department will be hosting their annual mid-winter Kaleidoscope Concert. The premise behind this evening is to not only have the high school music groups perform but to include other music ensembles from the district from various levels.

This year Mrs. Loomis and Mr. Creech from the Middle School will be bringing their 6th and 8th

grade choruses up to sing.

They will also do a combined song at the end of the concert with the High School Mixed Chorus.

Also performing from the High School will be the wind Ensemble led by Mr. Blodgett, the Mixed Chorus under the direction of Mrs. Agro and both the Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra conducted by Mr. Molik.

The event begins at 7pm in the High School Auditorium. Admission is free and the public is invited.

LS MIDDLE SCHOOL FEBRUARY CITIZENS OF THE MONTH The Brant Evans Citizens for Responsible Choices and Lake Shore Central Middle School have announced the February Citizens of the Month.

The following students are being honored for being good citizens in their school and community:

SAMANTHA EMHOF Samantha Emhof, a sixth grader, is the daughter of Anthony and Jennifer Emhof of Derby. In school, Samantha is in chorus and art club. Outside of school, she likes to play with her Wii, ride her bicycle and draw. Her future goal is to go to college, study fine arts and be an artist. Emhof said her favorite things in the world are family and friends. The character trait she believes is most important for continuing success is being Trustworthy.

“When someone tells me someting and asks me not to tell, I keep their secret, it is important to be trusted,” Emhoff said.

KENDRA GUENOT Kendra Guenot, a seventh grader, is the daughter of Mike and Lisa Guenot of Angola. In school, Kendra enjoys playing her clarinet in band, participates in Student Government and enjoys science. She also likes to play on the basketball and volleyball teams.

Outside of the school, she enjoys being with her fam-

ily and friends and playing Evans Youth softball.

Kendra is also involved with her youth group from church. Her future goal is to become an elementary school teacher. Guenot said her favorite things in the world are her mother and her father. The character trait she believes is most important for continuing success is Respect. “You need to respect others, those that are older than you and people your own age,” Guenot said.

MOLLY GIBBS Molly Gibbs, an eighth grader, is the daughter of Scott and Sara Gibbs of Irving. In school, Molly plays the saxophone and piano. She is in band and chorus and her favorite subject is English. She is also on the swimming and soccer teams. Outside of the school, she likes to spend time with her family and friends and practice on musical instruments. She also likes to play softball.

Gibbs is an altar server at her church. Her favorite things in the world are family oriented events and playing soccer and softball.

The character trait she believes is the most important for continuing success is bravery and being courageous. “One must be courageous to do new things.

If you don’t try anything new, you won’t have any excitement in life,” Gibbs said.

SCS STUDENTS GET INTO SCIENCE

Seventh graders in Ms. Erica Aikin’s Science class in the Southtowns Catholic School began a unit of study on the characteristics and major groups of fish, and how they differ.

Students were given a hands on opportunity to learn by completing a Science Lab that involved dissecting perch. Students were amazed when they were able to identify internal organs.

The Lake Shore Central School District Board of Education discussed the 2012-2013 budget during its workshop meeting on March 6.

Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Finance Daniel Pacos presented a draft copy of the proposed budget for consideration by the Board. The draft proposal, prepared by the members of the administrative team and budget committee, adheres to the New York State “tax cap” and includes reductions in personnel, services, supplies and materials and contractual services.

The District Budget Committee and District Administration recommended reductions from preliminary projections of staffing, services, supplies, programs and materials and endorsed entering into an efficiency program for energy consumption reductions.

Fourteen District employees opted to participate in a retirement incentive that will generate a cost savings of $533,890 in the coming school year, with five of these positions eliminated as a result of the retirement. In addition, tow elementary teachers, five secondary full-time equivalent teaching positions, one personnel clerk and one groundskeeper position totaling $577,461 were removed from the proposed budget.

Additional reduction recommendations were made to reach the proposed tax levy, including: reducing the athletic program by -4.15 percent, reducing summer counseling work, publications, fees, technology, professional development and technology.

During the workshop session, Board members and administration discussed the impact of these cuts on educational programming and district operations.

“We have tried to align staff cuts with enrollment trends. However, these are reductions that will impact educational programming for our students,” Mr. Pacos said.

The Board is expected to adopt the 2012-2013 budget during the March 20 meeting.

Jonica DiMartino of the Town of Evans has been awarded Certification as Registered Municipal Clerk (RMC) by the New York State Town Clerks Association for achieving its high educational, experience and participatory requirements.

Jonica has been serving as Town Clerk since January 1, 2010 and has been a member of the NYS Town Clerks Association for several years, both as Town Clerk and as Deputy Town Clerk.

She attained her designation as Registered Municipal Clerk through a combination of numerous hours of education and leadership in various professional and civic organizations.

This statewide Certification Program was launched in 1997 in conjunction with the NYS Association of City and Village Clerks.

The program aids municipal Clerks in improving job performance and recognizes the professionalism of the Municipal Clerks office. Specific education and experience requirements must be achieved before this prestigious designation of Registered Municipal Clerk is awarded. Qualifications of applicants are reviewed and approved by the NYS Town Clerks Certification Committee.
