PLM HAS NEW PRESIDENT

RET. JUSTICE ARTEMIO TUQUERO

BY JAN MICHAEL B. SUAREZ

AFTER THREE LONG YEARS of wait to have an official leadership, Retired Justice Artemio G.Tuquero was installed as the new Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila president last July 3. To formally welcome its new leader, the whole PLM community is invited to participate in The President’s Forum on August 16 at 1:00PM in the University Activity Center (UAC). The event was organized by various student leaders in light of all the inquiries and questions entailed on the president. Tuquero’s appointment follows Atty. Rafaelito Garayblas’, the former secretary to the mayor, who tentatively occupied the university’s top post ever since former university president Adel Tamano filed a certificate

of candidacy for the 2010 National Elections where he ran as a senator. Before serving the university, retired Justice Tuquero was actively involved in the academe. He was a former dean of the College of Law at the University of the East (1993) and Urdaneta City University and of the School of Law at Manuel L. Quezon University (2002-Mid 2008). Tuquero was also appointed as OIC and then university president of City College of Manila (now known as Unibersidad de Manila) by former Mayor Alfredo S. Lim. He guided the university for two years (2008-2010). Before finishing his four year term as dean in University of the East, former president Estrada appointed him as Associate Justice of Court of Appeals (1996). Shortly thereafter, Estrada appointed him again as Department of Justice Secretary whereas his tenure lasted for a year. He assumed the responsibility from former Justice Serafin Cuevas from years 2000 to 2001. In 2011, Tuquero, a member and a key official of the religious sector Iglesia ni Cristo, was nominated by the sect for the position of the Ombudsman in lieu of of Merceditas Gutierrez’s resignation. Though he was then considered and included on the shortlist by the Judicial and Bar Council as a candidate, he subsequently lost to Conchita Carpio-Morales. President Tuquero will now be the ninth PLM president, following Dr. Benito Reyes, Dr. Consuelo Blanco, then Manila Mayor Ramon Bagatsing, Dr. Jose Villanueva, Dr. Benjamin Tayabas, Dr. Virsely dela Cruz, Atty. Jose Roy III and Atty. Adel Tamano.

E-GRADES STILL IN TESTING

SIS CONTINUES TO ISSUE CLASS CARDS BY ADLE MEYE R. ENRIQUEZ/ NEIMA G. CHOWDHURY

CLASS CARDS will still be given to students until the eGrades system is not fully employed. According to Venus Martin, Chief of Records Section and Assistant to the Registrar,

giving of class cards is still included in the enrollment process because eGrades is not yet in full implementation. Martin clarified that they will refrain from providing class cards once the Vice President for the Academic Affairs (VPAA) ordered to have a full implementation of eGrades. Meanwhile, Reynaldo Medina, Chief of Student Information Services (SIS), said that there is still no directive given

to them to stop the distribution of class cards. EGrades was deployed since 2010 and the College of Engineering and Technology was the first college to benefit from the advantages of the eGrades system. The said project was in response to the demand if the students in the Strategic Planning Sessions three years ago at the Regents’ Lounge and the TOP Room.

‘FIGHT CORRUPTION’ - ERAP BY MARY PAULINE G. DEL ROSARIO/ ADLE MEYE R. ENRIQUEZ./ JANINE P. FRANCISCO Former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada, convicted of plunder case in 2007, promises to fight corruption during his inaugural speech as the newly-elected mayor of Manila. ‘MAINTAINING INNOCENCE’ In his speech, Estrada recalled that then Justice Secretary Hernani Perez through then Chief Justice Andres Narvasa offered him to go to a country of his choice, assuring that no cases will be filed against him of the condition that he signs a document stating that he resigns as the president of the Philippines. But Estrada refused twice to accept the offer. “Tumanggi ako dahil alam kong wala akong kasalanan at di ko kayang talikuran ang pagtitiwala ng sambayang Pilipino. I did not accept the

offer because I am innocent.” Erap likened himself to President Nelson Mandela of South Africa, Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar and late senator Ninoy Aquino. He stressed, “we were all convicted, that is why we are known as men of conviction.” ‘NEW CHAPTER’ As the Mayor of Manila, Estrada said he will open a new chapter that will revive the former glory of the city when it was still the center for commerce. “Magtataka pa ba tayo sa sinasabi ni Dan Brown na ang Maynila ay ‘gates of hell’. Many are still in the state of denial about this. Pero para sa akin at para sa ating lahat, this is a wake up call. Kaya ang sigaw natin ngayon, gising Maynila, bangon Maynila at sulong Maynila.” In his first 100 days as the city’s mayor, Estrada said he will focus on peace and order and cleaning up the police force. “Tapos na ang maliligayang araw ninyo, tapos na, tapos na, tapos na. I promise you, the fight against corruption will be the centerpiece of my administra-

tion. We will clean up our police force and see to it that they will only be Manila’s finest and not Manila’s worst.” Estrada also urged businessmen to install CCTV cameras to help fight crime. He also proposed a night market to keep vendors out of the street and avoid traffic. ‘AMO NI ERAP’ At the end of his speech, Estrada called on Manileños to help him renew the city and mentioned that “Erap’s boss is the poor.” “ Dito sa Maynila ang mahihirap ang amo ni Erap. Kaya po pakiusap ko po sa inyong lahat, tulong tulong po tayo sa pagsulong ng bagong Maynila.” Estrada together with Vice Mayor Isko Moreno and 36 Manila councilors took their oath before resigned Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and Acting-Senate President Jinggoy Estrada, respectively. Last May 2013 elections, Estrada won as mayor of Manila with 343,993 votes over Liberal Party’s Alfredo Lim with 308, 541 votes.

PLM HAS NEW GRADING CRITERIA BY ANNE JANE M. PANDIAN/ PHOEMELA NICOLE V. BALLARAN To ensure a uniform and consistent grading system that would also reflect the University’s academic standard, then president Atty. Rafaelito Garayblas signed an Administrative Order (AO) establishing a new grading system last June 27. According to the AO, the new institutionalized equivalent scale rating should be observed by all colleges except for the College of Medicine (CM), College of Law (CL), and Graduate Schools, though they would have to use the same numerical ratings and remarks. Moreover, each Undergraduate and Graduate School shall use the base 50 percent transmutation of grades. However, CL, Graduate School of Law (GSL), and College of Accountancy and Economics (CAE) — which use base zero percent— are exempted from it.

The AO also encouraged transparency among faculty professors and students when it comes to concerns regarding the students’ grades. Kevin Paul Mendoza, a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy student, expressed his thought on the current grading system, “Since zero base ang gamit namin, mas mahihirapan kaming ma-meet ‘yung dos pataas na requirements sa mga major subjects namin. (Naging) masyado ng mataas ‘yung uno, baka malabo na kaming makakuha nyan. Pero kung ayan ung % SCALE RATING 98-100 95-97 92-94 89-91 86-88 83-85 80-82 77-79 75-76 Below 75

On the other hand, medyo nakakalungkot ‘yung thought na dodoble kayod sa pag-aaral ‘yung iba dahil sa numbers/ grades, hindi para mas matuto,” said Em Enrique, a student from College of Mass Communiction where a base 50 percent transmutation is employed.

CN ALUMNUS GRABS TOP SPOT; PLM 5TH IN LET BY MARY PAULENE G. DEL ROSARIO

A NURSING GRADUATE from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila topped the March 2013 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), besting 38,433 examinees as the “People’s University of Scholars” exceeded its previous performance and emerged as the fifth best teaching school nationwide. Percival Byron Bueser, who obtained an average of 94 percent, was a College of Nursing graduate in 2011. But, he took up teaching unit at the Philippine Normal University, from October 2011 to April 2013, to comply with the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) memorandum requiring

non-education degree graduates to complete 18 units of professional education courses and 12 units of experiential learning course. “Intensive preparation… it’s something that anyone can do,” Bueser told AP in an interview, saying

there are no tricks, but hard work and perseverance, in emerging number one in the teachers’ examination. “Perhaps, I was influenced by the other books that I’m reading, those books that state that talent is the end result of sustained, reflective effort, not the cause of it.” Another PLM alumni, Paolo-Niño Arceo, from the College of Science (CS), placed 10th with an average of 90.20 percent. Five other passers came from the College of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (COPERS) namely: Alvin John Besin, Rose Annie CamaraQuiambao, Juan Miguel Osmena, Arman Angelo Ramos and Diana Mari Tambot. Professor Jimmy Romero, newly appointed dean of College of Human Development (CHD), was elated by the results, thanking the PLM passers, who are mostly from CHD.

“[Kaya sa passers], just do your work and do the best in your field and be thankful to God,” an overwhelmed Romero told AP in an interview. Fifty-eight out of 69 PLM examinees, or 84.06 percent, passed the teachers’ examination, surpassing its passing rate of 67.31 percent in the September 2012 LET, enough to make PLM the fifth best teaching school nationwide. Only 39.61 percent or 15,233 of 38,433 examinees passed the exam for secondary level, and 10, 310 of 37, 117, or 27.78 per cent, passed the elementary level exam, according to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), which released the March 2013 LET results on April 18.

A COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY (CET) ALUMNUS of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) topped the April 2013 licensure examination for chemical engineering, redeeming the university’s prestige after a dismal performance in the last two years. With an overall performance rating of 57.14 percent, the PLM emerged as the fourth best school nationwide as four of

seven examinees passed. Two of the successful examinees are firsttakers including Kim Bryan Dueñas, who topped the exam; and Maximino Concepcion II; the other two are repeaters namely Kathleen Mae Dayao, and Gladys Anne Zubiri. “The only secret is discipline,” Dueñas told AP on his preparations for the licensure exam. “I’ve set a review scheduled which contains a 14-hour per day review,” he added. Dueñas, a former AP sports staff, graduated in 2012. His performance was no surprise for Engineer Clydelle M. Rondaris, chairperson of CET-Chemical Engineering Department, who also

told AP that this year’s examination was tougher than last year’s. She said, the changes in the exam’s level of difficulty resulted to top only two schools, University of the Philipines Diliman and Los Baños, respectively. “And for Dueñas, we somewhat expected it from him because he’s really a hardworking student,” Rondaris added. The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) said only 205 of 438 examinees passed this year’s chemical engineering board examination. The examination on April 2-4 covered physical and chemical principles, chemical and general engineering principles,

ethics and contracts. PLM’s performance this year was the best in nearly two years when 50 percent examinees passed in November 2011. The worst performance was in November 2012 when all PLM examinees failed. In April 2011, PLM had an 80 percent passing rate, the highest so far.

PLMAYERS MAKE IT TO MERALCO ‘POWER CAMP’ BY ALLAINE JOLINA O. MATIC/ EHREN LOUISE M. DE DIOS

TWO Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) 5th years of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila- College of Engineering and Techonology were accepted in MERALCO’s “Power Camp” internship project last April 2013. Among 600 applicants, Romina Fortuno and Raymond Abroguena

made it to the list of 42 Power Campers wherein applicants have to pass three levels of screenings: the application period, online examination, and panel interview. Applicants were chosen based on their critical and analytical thinking and leadership potential. “We were not considered as interns, they [took] us all as [if we were] a part of the company. They trust each of us sa mga projects…. [Those experiences] helped us to be familiar [with how things will be after we graduate] and when we land on a job,” said Fortuno when asked about her experience as a Power Camper.

Abroguena noted that not only did it improve his technical skills but also his communication and leadership skills. “MERALCO Power Camp” is an On the Job Training (OJT) immersion with project based activities. It aims to develop future leaders from high potential recruits by undergoing the two-month accelerated program. Applicants are provided with activities to hone their leadership skills and develop their personalities for employment opportunities.

A small chain of events could lead to increasingly displeasing result. According to R.A. 4196, also known as PLM’s University Charter, “the Municipal Board of the City of Manila shall appropriate the funds for the operations of the university.” Supposedly, PLM should receive an annual budget of at least 300 million pesos from the local government. This would enable the university to improve facilities in aid of the students’ learning, or to, at least, sustain its operations. However, PLM received a budget of 236, 917,567 pesos instead of 315, 890,090 pesos. The following year, the approved subsidy for PLM was 315, 890, 090 pesos but the university received none. Though, through an interview on August 2011, the former president Atty. Rafaelito Garayblas said that any unreleased subsidies from the city hall had already been settled. But reports from COA showed otherwise.

LIKE A ROLLING STONE

From an article in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, a national broadsheet newspaper, PLM’s Board of Regents did their best to collect the unreleased budget from Manila City Hall but were unable to for the reason that even the city hall had insufficient funds. This failure to collect funds prompted the PLM administration to carry out actions to make ends meet. An example of it is the enactment of the ‘strict’ austerity measures on January 2012 which garnered negative reactions from the students particularly due to its “no charging policy”. Since students rely now heavily on technology for their academics, the policy seemed inconsiderate and unfair. The administration also approved a cumulative tuition hike of 10 percent for five years. Now on its third year with 30 percent, students are alarmed at how high the tuition has increased. Tuition fees could even reach close to 10, 000 pesos in the undergraduate program. PLM’s scarcity of funds is now being shouldered by the students through the tuition hike and lack of adequate and competent facilities that could have helped us on our learning. Because of the irregularities in handling the city’s money, the education of thousands of Manileños are being compromised. With the onset of a new administration in the local government, we are hopeful when it comes to proper allocation of the city’s budget and that what is of the university’s will be given to it. Because PLM will still be deprived of its budget no matter how hard the BOR beg for it if the Municipal Board of the City of Manila has nothing to give. But still, a push is necessary for small chain of irregular acts could lead to increasingly displeasing result.

PHOEMELA NICOLE V. BALLARAN

“OUR RAGING HORMONES ARE NOT AN EXCUSE TO ACT AND BE STUPID... LET US NOT BE A PAIN IN THE ASS AND ADD TO THE BURDENS OF THE WORLD. “

Youth should not be wasted on the young In 1964, at the peak of the rock n’ roll scene, LIFE magazine photographer Michael Rougier and writer Robert Morse went to Tokyo, Japan to document a generation of Japanese youngsters who were hurtling aimlessly to oblivion. With that, Rougier and Morse produced an unsettling portrait of youth in revolt, defying Japan’s traditions and pushing the limits of their so-called freedom. Today’s generation is no different (myself included , of course). We are in the constant scrutiny of those ahead of us, declaring that we are off to nowhere. But our being young is both beautiful and complex. Our raging hormones are not an excuse to act and be stupid. Yes, sometimes it seems like our hearts are too big for our bodies. But we should take advantage of the fact that we currently feel too much. Because someday we probably won’t be as passionate as we are now about ourselves and on how we want to set the world on fire. We’d be too busy earning money to have a decent “life”, of which, according to our parents, involves acquiring and not appreciating things. And even if we do feel the same, we are probably physically and mentally tired to do anything about it. So as early as this time, we shall pour our emotions (positive and negative alike) to actions that will benefit mankind. Like advocating for a cause that we strongly believe in or creating masterpieces out of our pains. Yes, beautiful things could come out of tragic times. And, no, liking a page in Facebook does not equate to

advocating. The kind of world we are born into has a lot of imperfections and they will always exist. To hate injustice and inequalities in the society is natural and necessary. But to do foolish actions for the reason that the world is messed up anyway is absurd. Let us not be a pain in the ass and add to the burdens of the world. It also helps to think. We are given a brain so we should filter what we accept in our system. Most especially, filter whatever comes out of us. It pays when we do not only capitalize on our emotions but also on our intellect. We also should remember those times when we felt like bursting while having the thought that we can, somehow, change the world in our own way. We should hold on to that. That’s the part of our teenage years that we must keep no matter what. We should not wait until we figure out life because no one really has already figured it out. No one ever will. In waiting for the discovery of ourselves, life will pass us by unnoticed. Most of the time, our excuse is that we are searching for our “true” selves. But sorry, dear, we won’t find the essence of our existence in beer bottles and reckless acts. It is just an illusion that we have to and can find ourselves because we are not really lost. We are us at this time as much as we will still be ourselves moments from now. Existing is a progression of different versions of one’s self. So to search for who we really are is futile, the best thing is to just be.

25 Things I Wish I’d Learned Before life in PLM 1. What to do when I obsess over becoming better at everything when I don’t feel comfortable in my own skin. 2. Why everyone judges me by a number. On a scale. On a card. On lips of others that try to measure me, when I know my worth is not based on what they say. 3. The best answer to every damn problem can probably be found on Google. 4. What to do when I remember stories but not facts. 5. That my profs, classmates, and insane situations might break me. The trick is to not let them get to me. 6. I don’t have to do everything people want/ask/ expect me to do. 7. It is not my responsibility to be beautiful for anyone. This is not my purpose. I do not exist because of how someone finds me desirable. 8. The number of breaths I will waste waiting for professors and wanting to trade who I am for a better version of myself would be better spent

somewhere else. 9. How to deal with people you want to punch repeatedly in the face. 10. To not take care so much of the future that my present leaves me drained. 11. Overthinking will create problems that weren’t even there in the first place. 12. Strangers become family, family becomes strangers. I will take photographs of people to account who I’ve met but they will only serve as reminders of loss. 13. The worst thing is not failing a subject or living through heartache. The worst is when I wake up and hate myself. 14. I think relationships, ideas, or moments will last when I cannot even grasp how long it takes for me to wake up in the morning. 15. Invest in durable, every day needs: shoes I can walk in, friends for life. Nothing good will lead from bad investments. 16. Speaking my mind is powerful. And with that power, I

will never be free. 17. Explaining myself to people who are committed to misunderstand me is as time consuming as it is useless. 18. Someone out there hates me for the stupidest reasons. I can’t care. 19. The economics of emotion is a complex subject. 20. Every feeling is fleeting. 21. I will not find love at the bottom of a bottle, on the lips of a stranger, in the smiles of my friends when I do not love myself. 22. There will be people who will know my secrets and they will hate and hurt me more than I hurt myself. 23. There will be people who will know my secrets and still love me. 24. I will become lonely and lovely. And I will do lonely and lovely things. 25. I belong only to myself.

Dahil sa madalas naming pagbabonding, nakabuo ako ng mga pangarap na inakala kong kaya kong tuparin ng SABAY-SABAY: 1. Dahil taglay ko ang pusong mamon na para sa lahat, nagplano ako na maging isang guro balang araw. Para sa akin, napakaganda ng propesyong ito sapagkat pagkakataon ito upang maging bahagi ako ng paghubog sa mga kabataan ng susunod na henerasyon; 2. Bago ako pumasok sa paaralan, hindi pwedeng hindi ko ilipat sa MYX Channel ang telebisyon. Feel na feel ko ang pagkanta habang binabasa ang mga letra ng kantang ipinapakita sa screen. Naging bahagi na ito ng pang-araw-araw kong buhay. At dahil din dito, natuklasan kong kaya ko palang kumanta nang hindi naisasakripisyo ang aking dignidad kaya naman naisip kong good vibes kami ng musika;

3. Aba! “...A DOG’S LOYALTY KNOWS NO BOUND, THEY WILL LOVE YOU NO MATTER WHAT.”

the hunger games of philippine sports The Philippine National Games (PNG) ended last June 2, thoroughly filtering the qualified Filipino athletes for the 27th Southeast Asian games in Myanmar this December. This event made the creative transition of fiction to feisty reality possible. As I was browsing online for an update on the PNG, I accidentally came across an article that struck my imagination. It is as if that the Filipino athletes who wanted to be part of the glorygiving national team had undergone— what Suzanne Collins introduced to us— the Hunger Games. Originally, I always thought that what happens inside the covers of a book doesn’t really come true in reality but for now I rest my case. The Hunger Games depicts the epic struggle of Katniss Everdeen for her survival against the “tributes” from other districts. Congruent to that storyline, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) decided to employ the PNG not only as their tool of selection for new and undiscovered athletes that we have in our arsenal, but

also to identify those who are truly qualified of being dubbed as national athletes. To stress the challenge of proving their worth as national athletes, the PSC under the instructions of President Aquino, shall lower the classification of the recent national athletes if they fail to join the PNG. This would also affect the perks that they were receiving from the national government such as the financial assistance summing up to P40,000 monthly that would be lowered to the corresponding level, especially those who are national athletes playing for the ten priority sports of the country. PSC really made a good move in identifying our rightful representatives to the 27th Southeast Asian Games. Having PNG lessens the wrong expenditures for undeserving athletes. It is also open to all athletes and not just to those who are already a part of the pre-existing national team. This gives everyone an equal opportunity to be national athletes. I also commend the lowering of the classification of

STUDENT I N B O X

WHAT IS YOUR UNSOLICITED ADVICE TO OUR NEW UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT, RET. JUSTICE ARTEMIO TUQUERO? the non-participating national athletes in the PNG since this will enable them to strive more to remain as the representatives of the country. In my view, one athlete/representative should always start from the scratch in order for them to see the value of their efforts and most likely to redeem their honor and due dubbing. Implementing the Hunger Games strategy of the PSC has implanted a meaningful lesson to the national athletes: one should always see to it that his feet is on the ground even after representing Philippines in prestigious international battles. Because in the book, the Hunger Games did not only uphold the greatest and strongest individual but also the one who served as a model to others. As I have high expectations and faith to the methods employed, I do hope that the PSC did all the necessary things and considerations. May the odds be always in the favor of those who truthfully deserve it.

What my dogs taught me I grew up learning that dogs were terrifying animals. The dogs that roamed our neighbourhood were mostly Aspins, pointy ears and scary looking eyes. Sometimes I’d even imagine them having foaming mouths. What added to my fear was my mom telling me “May aso diyan!” even though there weren’t any, but still I’d run as fast as I can just to get far away as possible. When I was five years old, the show Clifford: The Big Red Dog was released, for those who do not know, Clifford is a tiny red puppy who grew up to 25 feet tall, owned by Emily Elizabeth, the nicest and best skater in their area. I wanted to be just like her and for that to happen, I had to have my own dog. I asked my parents to buy me a puppy, they declined, saying that my asthma would get worse and that dogs are hard work. Fast forward to my teenage years, I still demanded

my parents a puppy. Until one day, my dad came home from work, holding one in his hand. I named him Puti, very original. The first days were fun, I bottle fed the dog and played with it a lot. Weeks later school started and I worried that there’ll be no one to take care of him, my parents were at work, my older sister hated dogs and my little sister also attended school. When the bell rung, I’d rush home from school, only to find out that the house’s a mess, the shoes were chewed and the furniture was ruined. So I hid all the evidence. Miraculously, no one noticed. Puti bit three persons already but I never lose hope for him. Instead of feeling scared, I was even challenged. I thought if I got another dog as his playmate, he’d be a little gentler, and boy was I wrong. I figured, two dogs weren’t enough, so I got two more.I learned a lot from my

four buddies, but let me tell you the three most important things they taught me. 1. Trust your instinctsThat feeling in your gut, trust it. 2. Learn to forgiveSometimes I tease them by trapping them inside the restroom, but forgiveness is easier for them, afterwards they’d play with me again like nothing happened. 3. Be happy- Dogs are happy creatures. They appreciate simple things like a pat on their head they get hyper just by seeing their owners. So if you think that having a dog is hard work, you’re right. They rely on you for food and shelter. They need constant attention and human interaction of which i give to them (probably a reason reasons why I am single). But despite all that, a dog’s loyalty knows no bound, they will love you no matter what.

“Our institution needs immediate remedies for all the “burns and bruises” that the past regime has left. Make it a safe space for the true scholars who have been suppressed by the things they should have. Welcome and God Bless to your endeavor Mr. President!” JOHN RAPVINSKY (CMC) “I hope he becomes a president who cares for the institution’s stakeholders. And I hope he becomes visible to students. These two are the things our previous University President forgot to do.” VBERNI REGALADO (CMC) “Maging strict po regarding sa academic policies, not on regulating policies. Hindi po nagiging batayan ng talino at husay ng estudyante kung mahaba, may kulay ang buhok, o kung ano pa man ang sinusuot niya. “ AARON MAGALONG GOZUN (CPT) “Please get your shit together.” Yung madaling lapitan. Isang presidenteng aktibo, progresibo at ma-prinsipyo.” NOLIVER FALGUERA BARRIDO (CL)

SA INTRA 01

NILA MARY PAULINE G. DEL ROSARIO AT ANNE JANE M. PANDIAN

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grow up? Chances are, you weren’t thinking in terms of being thin, good looking, or famous. Those wishes came only when you reached adolescence. You had your own childhood dream but as you aged, you became more focus on getting a job that will give you a high income for a high-end lifestyle. Here in our beloved university, you can still pursue your childhood dreams even if you’ve already decided to take up a path that is not related to your when-I-grow-up-Iwant-to-be aspirations.

T H E BEST O R G FOR YOU

J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit— the prequel to his famous trilogy, The Lord of the Rings— tells the story of a middle-aged Bilbo Baggins and his extraordinary tale of helping a dwarf king named Thorin Oakenshield in reclaiming his kingdom Erebor and its treasures subdued by Smaug, a dragon with a penchant for things that glitter. Even though Bilbo Baggins is not the kind of hobbit who enjoys daring exploits and would rather content himself in the confinement of his hobbit hole, he still jumped in on a venture which later on brought out qualities that he never thought he possessed (like bravery in the face of death). Perhaps you are a Bilbo Baggins— contented with how things are lately, just going along the currents of life and not really living it the way you imagined. This might be the time that you pursue your personal quest, may it be toward a particular goal or just simply going to some far off place. Either way, keep these pieces of advice in mind taken from Bilbo’s tale:

“THE WORLD IS NOT IN YOUR BOOKS AND MAPS, IT’S OUT THERE.” -GANDALF

“I’M GOING ON AN ADVENTURE!” -BILBO

“I FOUND IT IS THE SMALL DEEDS OF ORDINARY FOLKS THAT KEEP THE DARKNESS AT BAY.” -GANDALF

“WHEN SICKNESS THRIVES, BAD THINGS WILL FOLLOW.” -BILBO

HAVE A SENSE OF ADVENTURE The starting point of every quest is the desire to be in one. To break free from the mundane depends solely on you. So if you are stuck in one place (whereas “place” could either be geographical or the state of your being), there is no one who could pull you out of it but yourself.

EMBRACE THE UNKNOWN WITH ENTHUSIASM Not everything that you will encounter in your odyssey is written on a manual nor is it illustrated on a map. The unknown represents endless possibilities and you should be excitedly engaged in the perpetual activity of exploring

MAINTAIN A SUNNY DISPOSITION In relation with item number two, things will not go exactly as what you have planned. Whether this unexpected twist is pleasant or not depends on your personal views. If you are an optimist, no sudden turns of fate could dishearten you. If you are a pessimist, no blessings of the universe could ever bring you happiness.

NOTICE AND APPRECIATE THE LITTLEST OF DETAILS Human beings have a natural talent for magnifying the bad and forgetting the good. In consequence, the world has become a harsh place to live in. But as you go along your journey, small miracles will convince you that warm gestures and acts of nobility still exist. You just have to be perceptive and observant to what’s around you.

the world’s fuel

things i should have kept

TWINGES OF REALITY THAT HAVE SUBJECTIVE MEANING

I must write and write until I’m tired, until I’m good at it. I won’t stop because my passion for writing burns eternal. The world will serve as my inspiration, every single event: birth, death, joy, heartbreak. I won’t stop because I meet wonderful people through writing. I’ll write about them, reliving them through my words. I’ll write and write and write until I feel good, until I can write no more. I’m not yet tired of spilling words out of me but soon I will be. Time will come when I will stop because I’m bound to drain myself out of fuel and die. And by then, I will serve as the world’s inspiration; I will be the one to give the world its fuel. I will help people meet their friends, get over the heartbreaks and deaths because I am a writer and my words will live on forever.

Today, everything revolved in a view that I can’t fully grasp. It is as if I’m a little child, looking above to see more clearly, struggling to understand.

INEXPLICABLE BUT WANTED ANSWERS

It was in this day that it all came back to me. Why now? Why here? I don’t need it. I’m capable of anything. Why is it that I feel there’s something I should remember – something I should see?

COULD BE DISPLEASING BUT MUST BE WILLINGLY TAKEN

Oh, my childhood dream. I vaguely remember it. I used to be so full of joy and hope. But I never did fulfill my dreams. The world was cruel to me. So I gave up.

one last look at my toy box BY MARY JUDE MARBY FAITH F. ABUAN

Ah. It was on that time that I concluded that everything in this world can never be grasped in a child’s view, and never will be. From then on I decided to be an adult quick, so fast that it struck me. Only then have I realized that the child in me was the one thing missing for me to understand the world in a better view. Why did I let go so easily?

BY ADLE MEYE R. ENRIQUEZ

WE ASK AND PATIENTLY WAIT FOR THEM Hey, Barbie! How have you been? It’s been eight years or so since I last saw you and you’re still stunning as ever. Back then, I wanted so much to be you. You have everything a girl could ask for: the looks, the body, the brains, the talent, the money. I wanted to do what you could: draw, paint, dance ballet, sing, surf, play all kinds of instruments, make lots of movies, be the most famous girl in school, get along well with everyone, and make magic and fantasies real. No matter how hard the situation is, you always win in the end, clutching that “Happily Ever After” trophy in your hands and living the dream life with Ken. That’s not how life goes for me. I don’t always win the battles I face; my skills and looks aren’t impressive; and like any ordinary girl, I’m stuck with the way things are going on in my life. All I have is me and all I can rely on is my hard work. Back then, I dreamed of becoming you. But now I realized I’m so much more than you are and what you can be. What’s the big difference between us, you might ask. Well, I’m human with a mind of my own and you are just a doll with a synthetic body. I may not be as beautiful and talented as you are, but I’m real and so is my world. I may not always triumph all the challenges that come my way but I learn and grow from those. There is no one else I want to be but myself.

HOWEVER, IT’S STILL OUR CHOICE WHETHER TO WHOLLY ACCEPT THEM

OR DISMISS THEM AS JUST RANDOM HAPPENINGS

So when was it exactly? The time where I forgot that dream? The time where I forgot to be a child?

RACIST ISSUE ON AZKALS’ WIN AGAINST HONG KONG The remarkable Azkals victory on a match against Hong Kong became a controversial racism issue when HK fans booed the PH fans. The Philippine Football Federation filed a complaint on June 8 to the Federation Internationale de Football Association(FIFA) over allegedly racist abuse by Hong Kong fans to the Philippine fans. Dan Palami, Azkal’s manager reported that the Hong Kong fans threw bottles toward their Filipino counterparts, and hurled abusive languages. In this evnt also, the Filipinos were called “slaves”. Azkal’s coach Michael Weiss, who monitored the Philippines’ victory at the MongKok stadium stated that he could hear the Philippine national anthem being booed. The Hong Kong Football Association submitted an initial investigation report to FIFA about the incident and added that future matches would consider segregating opposing spectators.

EMPTY CAN a valuable and lucrative material

WATCH Erin Brockovich (2000)

BY IRA Y. CRUZ

Aluminum cans are easy to collect and recycle, but many people throw them anyway. Recycling aluminum cans have many environmental, economic, and social benefits: it saves energy, time, and money. Collecting cans for recycling is an important step one can take to help the environment.

aluminum takes hundreds of years to decompose

Economic value of recycled aluminum Nowadays, it is cheaper, faster and more energy-efficient to recycle aluminum. Moreover, aluminum has a high market value and continues to provide an economic incentive to recycle. When aluminum cans are recycled curbside, they help pay for community services.

A single aluminum can can take 500 years to decay. However, if recycled, aluminum can return shiny and full to the shelves of a grocery store a mere 90 days after they are collected by the recycling plant.

Aluminum recycling gives extra income

ALUMINUM RECYCLING SAVES ENERGY

In America, one can earn between 25 to 90 cents per pound of recycled cans. That’s anywhere between 10 to 40 pesos per pound; not bad considering all that one needs to do is collect trash. Furthermore, aluminum is the most recyclable of all materials; four times more valuable than other recycled consumer materials.

According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, recycling an aluminum can requires less than 5 percent of the energy that would be spent in creating a new one out of fresh bauxite ore, the principal ore of aluminum. The Aluminum Association estimates that the energy saved in recycling a single aluminum can power a television for three hours.

So from all of these benefits that you’ve read, why not try to place a small basket or a metal rack in front of your house so your neighbors can stash their soda cans in it for you to start collecting and recycling on your own?

DOH-NCR Director Eduardo Janairo announced that Maynilad Water Services Inc. is providing quality and sanitary tap water for NCR residents. Janairo noted that the tap water contains essential minerals such as magnesium, iron, and sulphate.

80% of bottled water containers are thrown away, producing up to 1.5 million tons of plastic waste per year. They take 700 years to begin decomposting.

These are the passionate green warriors who protect nature not only in the movies but also in real life.

Why? Well, people are too LAZY to throw their bottles in trash cans. Plastic bottles are either washed up by the flood or thrown directly at bodies of water. This would lead to accidental swallowing of trash of marine animals.

Erin Brockovich is a real life environmental activist. Her life was dramatized in film and she was portrayed by Julia Roberts. A single mother of three, she was desperate to find a job yet unlucky. Nobody took her seriously because of her trashy clothes and earthy manners. But things changed when she began to investigate a suspicious real estate case involving the Pacific Gas & Electric Company. She discovered that the company was secretly trying to buy a land contaminated by hexavalent chromium, a deadly toxic waste that the company had improperly and illegally dumped which in turn, poisoned the residents in the area. As she dug deeper, Erin found herself in a clash against a multi-billion dollar corporation. But like what happens in most of Hollywood movies, Erin saved the day and became the hero of people who were affected by the destructive deeds of the PG&E

WATCH The Cove (2009) Richard O’Barry used to be one of the trainers of the performing dolphins in an American TV show, Flipper. He didn’t care for the dolphins’ feelings until Kathy, one of the dolphins he trained, died in his arms because of too much stress. Due to this is awful experience, he later on decided to expose one of the cruelest acts against wild dolphins in the world in Taiji, Japan where dolphins are routinely corralled either to be sold alive to aquariums and marine parks or slaughtered for meat. It will sadden you to watch The Cove, unless your heart is made of stone and you’re unaffected by the film. The Cove shows how evil man can be but O’Barry proves that it is never too late to change for the reservation of nature’s life.

WATCH The Inconvenient Truth (2006) In the documentary film The Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore tries to convince people that global warming is an immediate, dire, and still fixable problem. Gore is alternately grave, impressive, and even funny as he makes clear of the stakes he sees in the changing human consuming habits. He will make you think, especially about how you might have effects not only on your local environment -- recycling, reducing oil and electric consumption -- but also how you might become involved in more expansive projects, and consider yourself part of a broader, even worldwide community. Whatever you believe about the causes of global warming, Gore will insist that you acknowledge its existence.
