cation Villa ANTOINETTE CLIFFORD Scottsdale Influencer A native of Arizona, Antoinette Clifford, always had an elaborate sense of style. As a child, her mother would take her to a small Scottsdale vintage store packed with rhinestone jewelry, velvet hats, colorful clothing and unique home accessories. As her mother shopped, Antoinette wandered through the aisles of clothing feeling beautiful fabrics and textures awaking her passion for style and design. “That was the first time I realized I loved beautiful, glamorous things,” she recalled. A luxury enthusiast, Antoinette started treasure hunting all over Europe buying precious old books, opulent art and crystal fixtures to create one of a kind beautiful spaces, mixing rustic vintage with new glamour, her signature style. Her passion for transforming spaces led her to start her own real estate company, JBR Investments, with a focus on renovating and selling homes. “At that time, I had no experience in real estate, just a love for style and design. I happened to be the only woman bidding at a real estate auction in a male dominated, highly competitive environment. It was a real growing season for me. I would bid, win, push my way out, then sprint to my car to pick up my three kids from school.

FROM THE EDITOR
Cierra Luna is a graduate student at Arizona State University, pursuing a degree in sports journalism. Some things she loves about her college program are telling athletes stories, humanizing them, and reminding the public they are more than just what they do on the field or court. Cierra is grateful to learn alongside her talented peers at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and be mentored by the All-Star staff of professionals in the sports industry. Her favorite sports are baseball and college football, and she hopes to one day work for a professional sports team on the business side of the organization. Her dream job would either work in college football recruitment or as an NFL scout or for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Happy Holiday’s everyone, Not long after I took on this role, I kept reading email after email about an infamous “gift-guide.” I sought to create my own version of this holiday issue and present some of the top beauty, home décor, and other fun gift items for the upcoming season. However, the holiday seasons are not just for purchasing gifts for our friends and loved ones, but also to demonstrate extraordinary levels of giving! I had the honor of speaking with three exceptional individuals in our “Season of Giving Series” who exemplify a passion for philanthropy. So read through this issue, get some gift ideas, and cherish what we may already have. 2020 has been one wild ride, and many of us are just grateful it’s coming to an end. The AZ Foothills team wishes you all a blessed holiday season and remember, “we shouldn’t always raise our standards of living, but always raise our standards of giving” (thank you, Kathleen Duncan, for that quote). Thank you, and cheers to a new year!

The Gift of Good Music: Local Record Label Keeping
, VINYL ’ S Though concerts are canceled, and music venues are closed until sometime in 2021. Vinyl records sales are booming! Local music label Renaissance Records was founded back in 1993 by John Edwards to reissue classic rock LPs onto a CD for the first time. Now in 2020, Renaissance Records is coming full circle and reissuing classic rock albums onto vinyl for the first time in their history.

“In September 2020, vinyl sales surpassed CD sales in the United States for the first time since the 1980s.” John Edwards, owner of Renaissance Records, states. “This officially makes vinyl records the dominant physical medium when it comes to music.” On October 1st, 2020, they kicked off their vinyl launch with the release of the album Anthology – 45 Years by the Canadian rock band, Prism. This limited edition 180g LP album has been put together with deluxe incentives. This includes the original band members’ trading cards, restored liner notes, a poster, bumper sticker, and lyric sheets. “Each vinyl release will come with these extra incentives.” Edwards nostalgically continues. “I want each vinyl release to be like how it was back when I was a kid. Every vinyl album used to come with extra goodies like a t-shirt or poster.” Renaissance Records will continue to release vinyl albums from Shooting Star, Shania Twain, Planet P Project, New England, Wetton Manzanera, and many more to be announced. “The main goal now is to keep putting classic albums onto vinyl.” Devon Yancey, Marketing Director for Renaissance Records, says. “It’s a special medium in the age of digital streaming. Digital streaming undeniably took away ownership from the listener. Vinyl is something you can physically touch, display, and pass down.” “Having a physical medium to pass down is important in keeping good music alive.” Yancey continues. Additional information on upcoming releases is available at www.RenaissanceRecordsUS.com. Limited edition vinyl is available to purchase on their online store.

VANCE SAT DOWN WITH AZ FOOTHILLS MAGAZINE FOR AN INTERVIEW ABOUT THIS UNIQUE FUNDRAISER. Hi, Emily, so how did the Masked Portrait Project come to be?
Emily Vance
I was actually in an online class for my digital photography major at ASU Online. I really wanted to do a project that reflected the times and the current world situation. I came up with the Masked Portrait Project, I was in Portland at the time, and I started talking to an ASU alumnus, a teacher now, and she does tons of work with children in the Navajo Nation. So we started brainstorming, and we decided to have funds be raised for the Navajo Nation COVID-19 Relief Fund on GoFundMe. I mainly did not want to profit off this, and it’s just become a labor of love.
Why is wearing a face mask such a passion of yours? In the early days of COVID, I lost a few of my central photography contracts, so I had to get a job at a grocery store. I would just hear so many individuals complain about wearing a face mask for the 10 to 15 minutes that they were inside. It just bugged me for some reason, so I wanted to tell a story through this project about wearing face masks. It was all about spreading love and not germs! I am a healthy 28-year-old; I don’t need to wear a mask because I’m sure I will be fine. However, it’s just a sign of respect for those who have compromised immune systems. Wearing a mask is like wearing a seatbelt in today’s world. It’s merely for the protection of yourself and myself.
Many of us know about the coronaviruses’ impact on the Navajo Nation, but is there any particular reason you chose the Navajo Nation COVID-19 Relief Fund to fundraise for? Well, it was really just what I was called to donate to when I was brainstorming with ASU alumni Paige. I just wanted to help as many people as I could and with the GoFundMe account. I know exactly where the money is going, and that is helping individuals through this crisis. But this project has grown so much, and I’ve been able to work with so many mask foundations, like Tempe Mask Makers, who make masks for individuals who can’t afford one. The Navajo Nation Relief Fund is just one of the organizations I have gotten to work with through this entire process.
Lastly, just explain the process of how someone can donate or get involved with the Masked Portrait Project. Right now, people can message me on Facebook, Instagram, or through the website, and it’s just “pay what you can.” If I can’t do the photoshoot myself, we have many volunteer photographers who can do the shoot for me here in the Valley. We just ask that you send us confirmation from your donation before scheduling the shoot. However, we don’t ask for contributions from photoshoots across the country or around the globe. We just ask that you use the hashtag #TheMaskedPortraitProject, to spread the word about the project. Spread kindness, and not germs!

Nick Lowery, nicknamed Nick the Kick, is a former placekicker. The successor to legendary Jan Stenerud, Lowery lived up to the Chiefs’ pressure from 1980 to 1993. Written by c i e r r a l u n a
NICK LOWERY INTERVIEW
26 AZFOOTHILLS.COM
He became the Chiefs’ all-time leading scorer with 1,466 points, and his 329 field goals are the most in team history. At the time of his retirement after the 1996 season, he was the most accurate kicker in NFL history in making 80 percent of his attempts. He also had the most field goals in NFL history and is 12th among the NFL’s all-time scoring leaders with 1,711 points. In Lowery, the Chiefs not only had a winner on the field but a winner in life. With several charitable organizations working with the homeless, youth sports, veterans’ mental health concerns, and Native American communities in Arizona, Lowerys’ contributions on and off the field are par none.
So, Nick, many know you for your 18-season career as a kicker for the NFL. Can you tell me a little bit about your NFL career? An 18-season career in the NFL is certainly not something the organization sees every day. “I had a dream to play pro football - had been dreaming about it my whole life. The key was to find a way to endure through 11 rejections by 8 NFL teams! I just knew that the role of the kicker is the most pressure-packed in sports. You are in front of 80,000 screaming fans, the ball is snapped back, caught, put down, and kicked in 1.25 seconds over 11 huge, angry opponents eight yards away that are paid millions to block your kick – now that’s pressure! The kicker is not on the field all the time. Like many of us, he has to wait his turn on the sidelines, never knowing when it’s time to deliver, always vigilant and ready, and having to come through with all eyes watching. Everyone sees if you make or miss it…there is no “almost.” You either get it done or not: it teaches you powerful lessons of discipline, focus, and not making excuses.”

“For me, it built a voracious appetite for service. When I saw how we could change the narrative from disabilities to abilities, it made me hungry to do more.” The nomination for the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a significant success; how does it feel? “There are only two other kickers in the Hall of Fame, and to have a better percentage than them by quite a bit is both inspiring and humbling. It is tough to make it to the Hall of Fame as a kicker, so you just pray that those things out of your control work out. But it is indeed an amazing feeling.”
What are some other significant achievements that came out of your NFL career? Any Failures?
As I look back on my career, I love Rafael Nadal’s quote: ‘Stay hungry and humble.’ Don’t allow one achievement to be some signpost that you have arrived because you will lose that hunger and passion. You never have arrived - there is always some way to get better. That is what I always focused on. So I had the best years of my career after 34…I kicked an unprecedented level of 89% in the early ’90s.” Having been cut by eight teams 11 times, I had to beat out my idol and future Hall of Famer Jan Stenerud to finally make it. Then a year later, when I made it to the Pro-bowl, I kicked the game-winning field goal, with 17 future NFL Hall of Famers watching, including my holder Steve Largent; that was surreal. Today, in addition to my community service work, I serve as the national spokesperson for Kannaway and now the host of Kannaway Champions – speaking with Champions about overcoming adversity in even the worst of circumstances. Athletes don’t always admit the considerable toll the game on their bodies, especially

concussions. I have hosted “Future of Football” events with Banner, Barrows, and the CACTIS Foundation, focusing on preventing concussions. Even as a kicker, I’ve had a partial knee replacement and total ankle replacement, and two shoulder replacements! Imagine what other position players have been through! It’s gratifying to find sleep relief and healing through various CBD products.
Many fans don’t know you went to The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University after you retired from the NFL. What made you desire a graduate degree? “I grew up in Washington D.C. with a father who was head of station for the CIA in London, and my next-door neighbor was legendary Supreme Court Justice Byron White (who was best friends with JFK and Bobby Kennedy). My parents made higher education an essential part of my upbringing. Football was a passion and a dream come true, but I knew to prepare for life after football. I spent most of my off seasons training for
the NFL and working in the Federal government because I was always passionate about national service.
I know you’re originally a D.C. native. What made you decide to make Arizona your home?
The Super Bowl in 1996 was in Phoenix, so the NFL flew me out to make some appearances, and I had about five friends from Kansas City move out here, so I thought maybe I should start looking. After the second day of being here in Arizona, I was hooked. At the end of the week, I had purchased a house, and I have lived here ever since.
It’s been years since your last game in the NFL, but you’ve done a lot of charitable work within communities. Why is philanthropy so important to you?
My Aunt Margaret was born with cerebral palsy, and I admired her for her abilities and ac-
complishments. My “Kick with Nick” for the cerebral palsy program was the longest-running player fundraising program of its kind in the NFL and ended up raising over a million dollars. It served as a prototype for other player fundraising programs across the league. For me, it built a voracious appetite for service. When I saw how we could change the narrative from disabilities to abilities, it made me hungry to do more. It opened the door for my involvement in founding and leading other programs like Native Vision and Champions for the Homeless.
Tell me more about the Nick Lowery Youth Foundation and your current programs, like Champions for the Homeless. What compels you to choose a community need or initiative to support?
Champions for the Homeless started 15 years ago, with only 15 to 20 volunteers making Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter especially meaningful. Now we serve over 1000 homeless individuals and now have up to 500 volunteers.
The Nick Lowery Youth Foundation (NLYF) evolved from the work I was doing in Kansas City. My focus went beyond “Kick with Nick for United Cerebral Palsy” to inner-city mentoring programs for youth, the Homeless, and Veteran mental health programs.
You have also done charitable work within Native American communities. Can you speak a little about that?
My best friend’s wife had just taken over as the program director for Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health. At their wedding, she asked me if I would help them start a football camp for Native Americans because they wanted to develop relationships with more depth with youth sports in the community. I got the NFL Players Association involved, and together with NLYF and Johns Hopkins, we founded Native Vision with our first camp on the Navajo reservation in Chinle. I developed the Nation Building for Native Youth during my Fellowship at Harvard and have conducted 20 leadership training conferences to raise the
significant leadership capacity of America’s most under-appreciated population. What is a lesson or experience you
took from your impressive 18-season career in the NFL, and how do you apply it to the charity work you do now? We have a stage as athletes to bring light to the shadows of life. We all have to have a BIG ‘why’ - that is the first lesson; the second is to do what you absolutely love. Never give up and stick with it as long as you can. Take a great idea and make it real: stay creative and stick with it through thick and thin for 20 years, and you will see and absolutely know you have changed the world, one person at a time.

STEPS OF LOVE KATHLEEN DUNCAN
Written by T y l e r H o l l i s
Steps of Love is a U.S. based nonprofit with a mission to help youth in Mexico and the United States break the cycle of poverty by facilitating access to opportunities for quality education. Steps of Love partners with a Mexican civil association that focuses on supporting young people whose families lack the resources to send them to school and ensure they succeed academically. Kathleen Duncan, a Steps of Love Board Member and AIM Peñasco Liaison, sat down with AZ Foothills Magazine to discuss the life-changing programs offered for the Puerto Peñasco community.
Hi Kathleen, so tell us about Steps of Love in your own words.
Steps of Love is a U.S. nonprofit, it's Arizona based, and it basically was founded by a woman but then handed to me. I started my own Mexican nonprofit, AIM Peñasco, in 2016 to help kids living in poverty go to school. Over time, AIM Peñasco went under the umbrella of Steps of Love, but both focus on increasing educational resources for children in poverty-stricken areas.
What role do Steps of Love programs play in affecting the community of Puerto Peñasco? 30 AZFOOTHILLS.COM
When I developed this program, I approached it with Maslow's hierarchy of needs in mind; you know, we have to meet all of these children's basic requirements. If I wanted to have a long-term impact, that can't just include giving kids the financial resources they need to go to school and start the year. Some children need very little and just a bit of financial support with fees and registrations, but others require far more resources. If a child gets sick, they won't go to school, and therefore we need medical resources and primary medical care. If children aren't getting enough sleep or don't have food for the day, they will not come to school and worry about their grades when they haven't had a meal for the day. Access to primary medical care and a few meals a day are just a few things that will prevent them from succeeding in school. Some of these children don't even have a birth certificate, so Steps of Love encompasses ALL of the needs these young students require to succeed. The program is very holistic. So, we have a social worker on our team; we have certified teachers, community outreach individuals, and they all work together to encompass that specific child's needs. It truly is one child at a time.
What other resources, besides financial support, do you provide these children?
I really think the key and the strength of this program is that the whole team follows them throughout the school year. And because things change when you're living in poverty, you're very vulnerable to outside influences. We stay with the kids for years, and I think it was really a game-changer for us when we opened our first homework club. We now operate four of them, and they function, much like a Boys and Girls Club here. Many of the kids we support don't have anyone in their home who can help them with homework; their parents didn't attend school and/or work several jobs. The homework clubs are open, nine to six in high needs areas, so they're accessible to the kids, and they're staffed by certified teachers and teaching assistants. Schools in Mexico are all half-days, so these clubs provide time for students before and after class to come and focus on their studies. In these clubs, we provide meals so that we know they're eating. If there are other needs that the teacher finds out about like if the child sick, they will notify our social worker. Steps of Love is all about daily contact and consistency, so when new obstacles arise, we are prepared to aid the child.
It sounds like your goal is like the famous quote, "you can give someone
high school, but all of them were not going to start the school year due to a lack of resources. 19 of those students had just graduated from middle school, and we're not going to be able to move on to high school because of the financial barriers. I attended the high school graduation for all 19 of those students last June. We now have over 600 students in our program.
In this country, there is sometimes a negative stigma towards Mexico and its citizens. What would you say to someone who would argue that "we need to focus on the poverty here in this country, not Mexico?"
“ P re c i s e l y , t h e M e x i c a n C o n st i t u t i o n g u a ra n t e e s a f re e p u b l i c s c h o o l e d u c at i o n o n l y t h ro u g h s i xt h g ra d e , a n d b e g i n n i n g s e v e n t h g ra d e , t h e re a re f e e s ” . fish, and they will eat for a day, but teaching someone to fish feeds them for a lifetime." Is that accurate? Precisely, the Mexican Constitution guarantees a free public-school education only through sixth grade, and beginning seventh grade, there are fees. You have to come up with all of your materials, and there are other expenses, and then starting in high school, you pay registration, tuition, uniforms, books, much like college here, and it's about $500. Now bear in mind, the minimum wage in Mexico is $6, so that is a hefty fee for families living in poverty. We want to establish the mindset that education is the only way out of poverty. Our programs institutionalize that education needs to be a priority and not just an expensive option. There is no Social Services there that follows up with students who have missed weeks and weeks of school like we have in the United
States. Most of the time, the schools just say, "well, that's one less student we have to worry about." We sometimes receive kids who have been in the public school system and have already dropped, but we get them caught up, bring them back into the public-school system and then stay with them for the years following.
How many children have you affected? Do you have any metrics or data?
We actually began working the Arizona State University's Transborder Studies program to get us started with some more hard data and metrics. In the meantime, what I share is that the closest thing I have of proof that this program is working is this. We started this program with 72 students. And they ranged from kindergarten through
Interestingly, you say that because, before the pandemic, I would speak at local community groups throughout Arizona. One individual would always state, "we need to stop helping other nations and focus on the United States." My response is that educated children become empowered adults who can lift a community out of poverty. They now have empowered adults who can support their families who are not desperate to illegally come across the border. When you educate the kids in that community like I said, we have 19 in college, and we have over 600 now in our program. Those students, and I would bet a lot of money on it; will not be looking for ways to cross the border illegally because they'll be able to support their families.
Why Puerto Peñasco? What made you decide to help children in that specific community?
I would always visit Rocky Point with my family throughout the years for camping trips because it was usually all we could afford. I would see the children selling lollipops or bottles of water on the side of the road. Instead of just saying, "gosh, someone should help these children," I just started to do it. My husband always jokes that this is the most expensive mid-life crisis an individual could have had because we personally funded most of the programs initially. But, I say, as we all get older and potentially become more and more comfortable financially, we should never increase our standard of living, but our standard of giving.

November is National Diabetes Month Written by Devin “Dollface” Alexis
THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL DIABETES MONTH. THIS IS AN EXCITING 30 DAYS IN THE DIABETES COMMUNITY. EVERY YEAR, THE DIABETES WALK IS HELD STATE TO STATE BY THE JDRF (JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION). ALL OVER SOCIAL MEDIA, DIABETICS ARE NOW TALKING ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES MORE OPENLY. IN THE YEAR 2020, MOST PEOPLE HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT DIABETES IS, WHETHER THEY'VE HEARD THE TERM OR KNOW OF SOMEONE WHO HAS IT. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE STILL MISCONCEPTIONS AND A LOT OF MISUNDERSTANDING ABOUT WHAT A DIABETIC PERSON EXPERIENCES DAILY. THERE IS ALSO A LOT OF CONFUSION ABOUT WHAT DIABETES ACTUALLY IS.

“YES, PEOPLE WHO ARE OBESE DO GET DIABETES MOST OF THE TIME. BUT ALCOHOLISM, MEDICATIONS LIKE PREDNISONE CAN ALSO CAUSE TYPE TWO DIABETES.” Let's break it down a bit. First, there are two common types of diabetes: type one juvenile diabetes and type two adult-onset. Although the titles of the two seem straightforward, they are not because adults in their 20's, 30's and even 40's can be diagnosed with type one. Here, I'll explain. Every human has an organ in their body called the pancreas. The pancreas is responsible for housing and secreting different hormones in the body — insulin, which allows glucose to be passed into the cells. Without insulin, glucose stockpiles in the blood and turns into toxic sludge. It slows down blood circulation to the organs, and the poisonous sludge starts to pour into the kidneys and liver. It makes the person sluggish, dehydrated, short of breath, and can ultimately lead to heart attack death if prolonged. This process is called DKA, or diabetic keto acidosis. Symptoms of DKA include fatigue, anger, blurry vision, and lack of appetite due to dehydration. Type one diabetes is when the body does not produce insulin AT ALL. A cell called a "beta-cell" attacks the pancreas, telling it that insulin is "bad." It then kills the secretion of insulin from the pancreas. Doctors, scientists, and nutritionists have yet to determine the core cause of beta cells' formation or where they come from. They have decided it is a genetic mutation that is predisposed. Type two diabetes, commonly confused with type one, is a whole other disease within itself. Type two diabetes is typically diagnosed in older people and people who are obese. Although this is true, this perception that you have to be overweight and older to have diabetes is NOT TRUE. Over the years, it has come to light that younger generations have also developed type two, which can also be genetic. A huge misconception is that diabetes is a "sugar disease" and that you will, in turn, get diabetes if you overeat sugar. This, again, is not the truth. Yes, people who are obese DO get diabetes MOST of the time. But alcoholism, medications like Prednisone can also cause type two diabetes. This is because your pancreas works overtime to cover the amount of glucose you need to function with the prescriptions consumed. Type two can be managed by pills, which are small doses of insulin to kickstart the pancreases' own natural insulin. It can also be controlled by diet and exercise – the less processed foods or heavy carbo-
hydrates, the better the body can naturally break down the glucose. Here is a critical point that I know EVERY diabetic reading this is just waiting for me to talk about. There is NO CURE for type one diabetes. Until there is a way to determine why the Beta cells form and attack the pancreas, type one diabetics cannot be cured by diet and exercise. A type one diabetic HAS to take insulin synthetically before every meal and when their blood sugar spikes to survive. Diabetics measure how much insulin to take by their carbohydrate consumption. Carbohydrates turn into glucose in the bloodstream, unlike protein, which breaks down into fat. Type one individuals do not need to take insulin for protein as it does not affect the blood sugar unless there are added sugars into things like processed meats or cheeses. The only way to receive insulin is through an injection. Thankfully in 2020, technology has come a long way, and there are many spectacular technological advances. Companies like Medtronic, Tandem TSlim, and Omnipod make a device called an "insulin pump." A beeper looking device with a tube attachment stores the insulin and is released into a hairline sized needle that stays under the skin. Every three to five days, the port is taken off and reattached in a new area on the stomach, hips, or arms. There is also a device called a CGM, which stands for "Continuous Glucose Monitoring" system. It is another device that stays attached to the skin by a hairline needle. The needle reads your blood and measures the glucose levels. It then communicates with a device (usually a cell phone) and lets the diabetic know the fluctuations in their blood sugar in five-minute intervals. This can help prevent many high and low blood sugar spikes, so you can adjust accordingly by taking a sufficient amount of insulin or eating something. The blood sugar is measured by how many milliliters of glucose is in the blood at the reading time. It is measured on a number scale. For a non-diabetic, regular readings are between 70-130, and non-diabetics are 80-150 and usually feel more comfortable. Everyone has different goals with their blood sugar; 120 is typically the target reading. Diabetics like to joke that 100 is a "unicorn number," which is just as rare as seeing one of the mythological beasts. Several factors can affect blood sugar like carbohydrate intake, emotions, moods (which are big ones), medications, atmosphere, hot and cold envi-

“DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE RATES IN DIABETICS ARE DOUBLE THE CURRENT AVERAGE OF INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT DIABETES IN THE UNITED STATES. ronments, and lack of sleep all play a role. Sometimes, you can wake up and go throughout the day, trying your best to manage your numbers without explaining why your sugar levels are off. Every day is a gamble, and there are no vacations for a diabetic. Diabetes can affect your daily life and the interpersonal relationships within them. It can create isolation and what we call "diabetic burnout," which is when things become too overwhelming and the Diabetic stops taking good care of themselves. Depression and suicide rates in diabetics are double the current average of individuals without diabetes in the United States. Other autoimmune issues are typical, such as fibromyalgia, celiac disease, and irreplaceable nerve damage. These damages are sometimes inevitable, but the best control is active diligence and low carb, high protein diets. I always say that diabetes is not a one-person disease. Still, individuals need a support system of patient, understanding individuals, and willingness to see past the mood swings, the breakdowns, the canceling of plans, and all the highs and lows (not just with our blood sugars). It is also having patience and an understanding of yourself and your disease and that you are trying your best to control something that you were given with no choice. Being a type one diabetic for 29 years, I have experienced more than most. Now that you know what diabetes is and some of the causes and effects, let me introduce myself. My name is Devin "Dollface" Alexis. I am a 30year-old female with type one diabetes from New York City. I was diagnosed when I was a year and a half old when I was taken to the ER due to a stomach virus. The truth was, I was in DKA and severely hydrated with a blood sugar of over 1,800. Basically, I was at death's door. My veins collapsed, and the doctors put stints in my legs to keep my heart from giving out due to lack of oxygen. I do not remember this experience, but I have gone through many, just like it in my life. At the age of 20, I had a heart attack due to DKA. At 26, I started to lose my eyesight and, in 2018, went completely blind. For the entirety of last year, I had double eye surgery and spent days face down with gas bubbles in my eyes. In total, I had 11 laser treatments to rid of scar tissue and two injections. I had no idea it was because of celiac disease,
36 AZFOOTHILLS.COM
which was a byproduct of diabetes. Celiac disease is a gluten allergy. Gluten is found in white flour or wheat, which is primarily used as a preservative in processed foods. Food companies use gluten to prolong shelf life on pasta, bread, and even things like soy sauce. When you have a gluten allergy, it does several things to the body. It inflames the intestines and makes it contract, preventing food from being able to digest normally. It slows down the process of gastric absorption, so food sits in the stomach for hours or days at a time, causing bloating and constipation. Often, the food cannot process at all and sits in the chest cavity until it comes right back up. The body attempts to release the gluten by way of skin irritation, breakouts, and areas of psoriasis. It also slows down the circulation of hair growth and cuts, wounds, scrapes, etc. to heal at an average rate. As a result, I have developed Osteoporosis, which is when the bones become weak and brittle due to a lack of vitamins and nutrients being absorbed. I'm not going to simplify my experiences by saying it has not been a rough road, but I have never let diabetes stop me from accomplishing my goals through the ups, downs, and pain. I have spoken a lot about my social media, which is my real message with this article. I hope to influence those who are having trouble finding their inner strength through navigating this disease. At 30 years old, I can say I have genuinely accomplished my dreams. At the age of 16, I left home and started tattooing. I went to art school on a full scholarship, then esthetician and special effects training. I worked at film studios like Universal, Paramount, NBC, and Jame's Franco's production company doing special effects makeup for various films. Celebrities from Miley Cyrus to Kurt Russel are also a few of my clients. There were days I couldn't feel my feet, my blood sugar would drop so low then spike for hours at a time, or I avoid sleep going from 12 hours of filming to an overnight shoot. I was a woman on a mission, and looking back, I don't regret the fantastic career experiences rooted in me not wanting to be weak or defined by my disease. Now, I don't know about other diabetics reading this, but every time I see another Diabetic "out in the wild," I automatically want to be their best friend! We instantly connected and realized how many commonalities we shared, like working in entertainment and beauty! >>

Meet Afi Maita. Afi was a former stylist for Saks Fifth Avenue here in Scottsdale, AZ. Originally from Nigeria, Africa, Afi is a style icon, influencer, and stylist. When I heard this information, I knew we HAD to collaborate, and I couldn't wait to do her makeup! A while after, I saw Afi on the cover of the September issue of AZ Foothills. I knew National Diabetes Month would be the perfect opportunity for us to showcase our work and talent and spread the message that diabetes does not control you. You control it. I had the opportunity to sit down with Afi and ask her a few questions about her diabetes experiences. How long have you had diabetes? I've been living with the type 1 diabetes condition for over eight years. February 27th will be my ninth year after diagnosis. What does your typical daily regimen look like? I wake up, and like clockwork, I check my blood sugar. By pricking my finger with a lancet (needle) utilizing a test strip that is pushed into a meter that gives an instant, accurate reading of my blood sugar. 15 minutes before I eat each meal, I administer insulin from my pump, putting in the carbohydrates I'm about to consume to cover my meals. I do this at least 5 times a day. How has diabetes affected your mental health? Do you ever experience burnout periods, and if so, what types of things do you do to cope? I have learned to become a type 1 diabetic as this disease is for life. You can't just be diagnosed, then boom, you know everything. I went to classes to educate myself, and it was challenging at first. I had thoughts of self-inflicting pain as it became unbearable, knowing I would have to live like this for the rest of my life. I see a therapist once a month to help me manage my condition as a way of self-care. I also book myself a self-care treatment once a month with a facial or therapeutic massage to help pamper myself and boost my mental state. What about your career? Does it affect your professional life? As a wardrobe stylist, I'm always running around, so I've had to adjust my insulin pump to administer less so I don't suffer any lows (hypoglycemia). However, on average, I still manage two low blood sugar drops on a busy day consisting of sweating, shallow breaths, and dizziness. It's very discombobulating. I carry Capri Sun drink packets with me wherever I travel to just be prepared, and most of the time, I run out, so I go to my back up fruit snacks for emergencies.
Were you ever not able to do something career wise because of diabetes? Did you ever feel limitations because of diabetes? Knowing I can't join the military, careers in the army, air force, etc. if given a choice was baffling as that is not even a choice for me with my unstable hereditary condition of Type 1 diabetes. However, there are so many other ways to serve your country today. As a type 1 diabetic, what are a few things you would like non-diabetics NOT do when diabetes comes up in a conversation? Simply don't say, but you are not fat, how can you be a diabetic? Please learn the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and don't assume. Just ask me! How do you think we as diabetics can influence, inspire, and help spread awareness? Utilizing whatever platform, you have to educate and spread the word, join nonprofit organizations like JDRF or Beyond Type 1 to spread awareness. Please don't be afraid to wear monitoring devices in places so people can see it. It's a great conversation starter. I work with two diabetic consumer goods brands called Myabetic and Pumpeelz. Use AFILIKETAFFY15 for Myabetic discounts when you shop. They have the coolest diabetic supplies bags. Pumpeelz provides you fun stickers to dress up your medical devices, customizing them, use coupon code AFILIKETAFFY25 to get 25% off when you shop. Are you apart of any groups, clubs, nonprofits for diabetes? If so, please explain what each is and your role in these organizations. I have worked with the AZ Chapter of JDRF a few times on different events to raise money to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes as our condition is incurable. They are an excellent nonprofit organization that raises awareness of type 1, has chapters nationwide, and hosts a "Promise Gala" every November during Diabetes Awareness Month, which raises millions of dollars for research to find a cure. I was lucky enough to attend my first one in person last year before COVID-19 struck this year. It was magical. Were so close to finding a cure. I just know it. Beyond Type 1, co founded by Nick Jonas, who also has type 1 diabetes, is another fantastic nonprofit organization that helps raise awareness by celebrating the achievements of people who live with the same condition. They ask us how we live beyond our situation, and it's such a marvel to witness the type 1 warriors accomplishing amazing acts. For more information about the Type 1 Diabetes Research Funding and Advocacy (JDRF), visit www.jdrf.org. For more information about Beyond Type 1, visit beyondtype1.org.

g Wine aficionados are enjoying their beverage during the pandemic and it shows! A recent survey indicates that the sale of boxed wine has increased globally over the past few months, up as much as 77 percent! And there is no sign of it stopping. Box wine is one of the fastest-growing categories in the wine industry with more premium brands now available that are a match to the bottled variety. In the age of COVID-19, it’s a safer way to serve wine and eliminates the need to share a bottle. You’ll feel like a fine sommelier as you host your holiday parties (even the pared down kind) while reducing your carbon footprint with Wine Nook. For every Nook purchased, one tree is planted! Wine and cocktails on demand have never been easier. Enjoy a fun pop of color with Wine Nooks in a variety of styles to suit your decor. Each nook fits any three-liter box wine bag or fillable bag with your beverage choice, preserving wine for up to six weeks. Simply store it in the fridge.
Box wine is eco-friendly and affordable. Many are turning to box wine, including couples planning their wedding, instead of bottled wine since they get more bang for their buck, it’s better for the planet, and the wine tastes great. Boxed wine also holds nearly 4 times as much wine as a typical bottle. Choose from a variety of styles and sizes in different wood grains. Prices start at $59.
If celebrating at home, opening an entire bottle can seem wasteful for one person – but a Ruffino mini can come in handy (187ml - $4.99) and it also makes a great stocking stuffer!
The standard bottle is the ideal size to bring as a hostess gift or even send to a distant friend via Drizly while you pop bottles virtually (750ml - $13.99). And finally, a magnum of anything brings an air of celebration with it and this year, even the smallest celebrations could use the pomp and circumstance a magnum of Ruffino Prosecco can bring (1.5L - $29.99). In all sizes, upon popping the cork, Ruffino Prosecco exudes aromas of apple, pear and citrus, with hints of wisteria. A crisp, clean, delicate effervescence greets the palate, followed by intense flavors of apples and peaches, rounded out with a lingering finish of fruit and floral notes.

BRIDGING THE INDOOR SPACE TO OUTDOORS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO DRESS UP A PORCH OR PATIO WITH OUTDOOR TREATMENTS AND TRANSFORM ANY NOOK INTO A SPECIAL AREA TO RELAX AND ENTER TAIN DAY OR NIGHT. OR CREATE A NEW HOME OFFICE OR VIRTUAL CLASSROOM ALL WHILE KEEPING THE SUN AND NEIGHBORS OUT OF VIEW. Installing draperies in outside spaces provides the resort-like atmosphere of a favorite getaway; and using a product engineered to perform outdoors, like Graber’s new Artisan Performance Drapery, it’s easy to expand the living — and entertaining — space into a cozy retreat. Made with performance fabric resistant to outdoor elements, relax in the new space with peace of mind knowing it will be cleaner and cooler, adding to the comfortable lounging experience. For those wanting to keep the beautiful outdoor view while enhancing privacy and adding a splash of style to the exterior, Graber Exterior Solar Shades check all the boxes. Unwind in an outdoor home office with exterior solar shades that block undesirable light and keep any unwanted pests out, all while creating the perfect Zoom background. Graber also has a new Visualizer tool. The Visualizer tool lets consumers upload a photo of the room they want to enhance and “test drive” thousands of custom designs on their windows. Users can play with light and privacy levels until they find the perfect solution for their windows — trying different opacities and virtually raising and lowering blinds or shades. And a masking function shows how the window coverings look behind any furniture that may appear in the uploaded photo. Serendipitously launched during the pandemic, the Visualizer is free on the Graber website and can be combined with a virtual consultation with a local Graber expert so customers can feel confident in their ultimate choice before they buy. The tube holding the light sits atop a detailed Italian cast brass bobeches in the shape of open flowers and the central column is fashioned from Bohemian hand-cut crystal. With its thoughtfully crafted traditional elements, Helenia is a sophisticated focal point for formal entry foyers, dining rooms, and living rooms. Adorned with Heritage Crystal, the Helenia line is available in Heirloom Gold, Heirloom Silver, Antique Silver, and Black finishes. THAT’S ALL, FOLKS. Fueled by a love of creativity, design, and collaborations. Dedicated to the principles of having a true north and the concept of essentialism. Sustained by soulful alignment and driven to ask humanity,
WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO?
SOUL CARRIER is currently carried at 21 luxury resort properties and gift shops across the U.S., including multiple Four Seasons, Miravals, Hyatts, Silver Oak Winery, and Hotel Villagio in Napa. Soul Carrier is also carried online at www.soulcarier.com Soul Carrier is the answer to a question my mother posed to me the summer before my senior year at Arizona State University. That summer, my entire family was involved in a car accident that took both of my parents’ lives. Moments before my father’s SUV rolled over in a tire blow out, my mother turned around and said to me, “where do you want to go.” She never got to finish that sentence, and I never got to tell her my answer. I thought becoming a prestigious attorney should be my answer to that question. However, my soul had other plans. I set out for the shiny lights of Manhattan and Parsons the New School of Design. My time in NYC included interning for Oscar de la Renta, dressing models at New York Fashion Week, designing products for Henri Bendel, and working in product development at American Eagle. My fashion adventures also took me to Christmas parties with Marc Jacobs, fashion shows where I sat behind Anna Wintour, and jobs at Conde Nast that eerily resembled the movie The Devil Wears Prada. As incredible as Manhattan was, my soul, longed to be back in Phoenix. And so, I moved home and started working for a marketing firm that was coordinating the festivities surrounding the grand opening of Barneys at Scottsdale Fashion Square. The mall decided to host an event called “The Mannequin Is Our Muse,” in which valley residents were invited to take blank mannequins and turn them into art. I collaborated with my friend Bob Wilkinson. The mannequin we created was covered in vibrant rag rugs from the Dollar Store. Bob, a fellow creative, encouraged me to use my design degree, and thus, out of a pile of rag rugs, Soul Carrier started to take shape. I want to design products that bring more beauty and light to the world. Products that inspire people to carry their souls in every action they take. I want to encourage my customers to walk with integrity towards THEIR true north (not the direction other people want them to walk towards) and be authentic to what their soul truly desires. I believe your soul is your moral compass and learning to tune out the external noise is one of the most extraordinary things you can do for yourself. In the words of Avicii, “Life’s a game made for everyone, and love is the prize.” I hope my handbags impact you and inspire you to pursue what you LOVE. May your soul always be your most fabulous guide as you journey through the game of life.
