Q: I’ve read that “Goin’ Home” is reflective of a significant milestone in your music. How so? Shepherd: Technically, I signed my record deal in 1993 when I was 16 years old. We just passed the 20 year milestone and anniversary of me signing my deal. My first album came out in 1995 so 2015 will be the 20th Anniversary of my first album coming out. It’s huge. I’m only 36 years old and I’m celebrating 20 years of putting out records. To me, that’s big, because to me that’s a testament to my fans and to the kind of music that I play, because it has longevity.

A

During a recent invite to Shepherd’s California estate, I had a chance to talk to the two-time Grammy nominated artist about the new album, his overall music career, and one of his biggest hobbies when he’s not touring or recording, which is toying with his extensive collection of Dodge vehicles.

Q: What was the process like, preparing for the new album? Shepherd: For me, it was like the most fun record I think we’ve made so far. It was me returning to my musical roots, the Blues, because I’m from Louisiana. My first concert was seeing Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker when I was a kid and three years old. I grew up listening to Blues music and that’s really the foundation of all my music. We tend to push the Blues into different directions, mixing it with Rock and stuff like that, but this was an opportunity for us to get back to traditional Blues and to the music…that inspired me to play in the first place.

KENNY'S DOG - DODGE

12 MC AUGUST.SEPTEMBER 2014

Q: Speaking of milestones, Dodge is celebrating a pretty significant one of its own this year, the brand’s 100th anniversary. It’s no secret that you are a huge Dodge fan with a pretty extensive collection of Dodge vehicles. Even your dog is named Dodge. Where does that passion for Dodge cars stem from? Shepherd: It’s a part of my family history. My parents drove Dodges. That’s one of the reasons we built that Dodge 330… because my grandfather had one when my dad was a kid. We have a history of Dodges in the family. Growing up, I’ve always been attracted to Dodges because of their styling. They take chances when it comes to design, and that resonates with me. Q: Is there any element of that passion for Dodge that transcends into your music? Shepherd: Absolutely, I’m a perfectionist. A perfect example is the new Dodge Viper and how, during the redesign, they pushed to perfect it by listening to their customers, just like I listen to my fans. Q: In talking about Dodge’s 100 year milestone, there’s also the realization that the company needs to now focus on future products to remain relevant in the years to come. When you reflect on your own personal career in the midst of such an important milestone, what does the future look like for Kenny Wayne Shepherd? Shepherd: I deal with my music much like Dodge deals with cars. The minute they release a new car, they are working on the next generation and updates. As soon as I put a record out, I’m already thinking about the next album. I’ll be playing music until the day that I die, and I’ll be driving Dodge automobiles until they take my license away. Beyond that, I don’t know what the future holds but I look forward to it.

WHAT EXACTLY IS COOLSCULPT AND WHO IS IT GOOD FOR?

COOLSCULPT IS A PROCEDURE THAT USES COLD TO FREEZE AND DESTROY FAT CELLS IN AREAS OF LOCALIZED ADIPOSITY (FAT BULGES) RESISTANT TO DIET AND EXERCISE. This advanced technology uses a process termed “cryolipolysis” to destroy unwanted fat cells and decrease localized fat bulges. In your consultation your doctor will determine whether cyrolipolysis could provide the desired results. The ideal patient is within 10 to 20 pounds of their ideal body weight and has a stubborn area of fat that has been resistant to further diet and exercise. One of the chief reasons that the procedure works so well is that fat cells freeze at a temperature of 37 degrees whereas the skin freezes at a lower temperature (32 degrees). As a result, the temperature can be lowered enough to destroy the fat cells but not so low as to damage skin structures (epidermis and dermis). An appropriate sized and shaped applicator is applied to the localized adiposity and suction is engaged, drawing the tissue into the applicator cup. Once proper positioning is confirmed, the cooling plates are activated, continuing for one hour. At the conclusion the frozen fat is massaged gently. The post-therapy massage makes the treatment more effective by stimulating the lymphatic system and causing the crystallized fat cells to traumatize fat cells that did not reach the point of crystallization. Studies show that within the first three days of treatment, up to 25% of fat cells die in the subcutaneous fat. Over the next two to three months the skin draws inward, reshaping the area via fat layer reduction. Temporary side effects may include numbness, tingling, swelling and bruising. These side effects frequently resolve in the first 7-14 days following treatment, rarely lasting longer. Patients should still maintain a proper diet and exercise regimen as CoolSculpting is not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle. If a patient consumes more calories than are expended, those calories can be stored in the remaining fat cells. However, for localized areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise, CoolSculpting can be an effective, safe, quick, nonsurgical alternative. www.dermatology-center.com

WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE A VASCULAR SURGEON?

A VASCULAR SURGEON IS A PHYSICIAN THAT IS TRAINED TO TREAT DISEASES AND ABNORMALITIES OF BLOOD VESSELS. This includes the arteries and the veins. A Vascular Surgeon treats all blood vessels of the body except for those that are inside the skull and those associated with the heart. This requires training in general surgery and specialized training in vascular surgery. Conditions that are frequently treated by a Vascular Surgeon are aortic aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease, carotid disease and chronic venous insufficiency. You should see a Vascular Surgeon: If you have been diagnosed with atherosclerosis of the carotid arteries. Atherosclerosis is often called “hardening of the arteries. The carotid arteries are found in the neck, and are the main route of blood supply to the brain. A Vascular Surgeon can tell you if your artery is narrowed enough to require intervention, and whether that is better done with an operation, a carotid endarterectomy, or a stent. A Vascular Surgeon is the only physician trained to perform both procedures. If you have been diagnosed with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). In PAD, atherosclerotic plaques in the leg arteries cause restriction of blood flow. In mild and moderate cases, patients may suffer muscle pain with walking, called claudication. In severe cases, PAD can cause severe foot pain, or gangrene. Without prompt treatment, amputation can result. In most instances, PAD requires no intervention. A Vascular Surgeon will help you make the right choice for your circumstance. If you have varicose veins or other vein problems. Varicose veins are unsightly, but contrary to popular belief, they can also cause health problems. A Vascular Surgeon can fully evaluate your leg veins, and develop the right treatment plan for you. If you are concerned that you have circulatory problems. Circulation problems are sometimes difficult to diagnose. They can masquerade as other medical conditions. A Vascular Surgeon is the best person to help you diagnose and treat any circulatory problem you may have. www.coastalvascularcenter.com

FLEA ALLERGY DERMATITIS IS THE MOST COMMON SKIN DISEASE IN DOGS AND CATS. It is important to note that fleas themselves do not make pets itchy. Only pets that are allergic to the flea's saliva become itchy. Because it is an allergic reaction, it only takes a few bites anywhere on the body to make them break out. Diligent, continuous flea control is therefore crucial in treating the skin disease. Today, there are a multitude of flea control products available that will suit individual needs. Despite the availability of flea control products, many pet owners do not use anything to help protect their pets. One common reason is that the pet lives indoors only. Fleas actually do very well indoors, where the temperature stays well regulated year round. Another reason is that the owner doesn't see any fleas on their pet. Not only are fleas good at hiding in hair coats, but many animals are very good at catching them before the owner can see them. Remember, it only takes a few bites to cause an allergic reaction in your pet. Since not all pets are allergic to flea saliva, some owners never really notice if there is a flea problem until it becomes rampant. It is much easier to prevent a flea infestation than to have to treat it. Also, flea allergy dermatitis is not the only problem fleas can cause. They can cause anemia, which can be lethal to puppies, kittens, immunocompromised and geriatric pets. They can also indirectly cause Cat Scratch Fever, which does not make the cat ill but can make the owner or any other person ill. Fleas can also cause unsightly tapeworm infections in pets that ingest the fleas. If your pet is itching and not currently on flea control, or if the flea control doesn't seem to be working, please give us a call at 805.495.4671 and we will be happy to discuss options with you. www.conejovet.com

SO YOU'VE BEEN TOLD YOU NEED SPINE SURGERY? NOW WHAT?

a: LOW BACK PAIN AND NECK PAIN ARE PREVALENT IN THE GENERAL COMMUNITY. In fact, so many people experience these conditions that it accounts for 35-40% of all visits to the primary care physician. Often times, this will generate a referral to a spine surgeon. A spine surgeon will either be a neurological surgeon or an orthopedic surgeon, both being duly qualified to treat the condition. Visiting the spine surgeon can be a scary experience for many as the thought of spine "surgery" terrifies may people. Some will forego or postpone the visit, thinking that it will automatically mean an “operation”. Actually the truth is that I operate on only about 10% of the patients I see in the office. I frequently treat the conditions I encounter with physical therapy, pain management techniques and other various non-surgical therapies. If I can help someone be pain free without surgery, I feel I have succeeded in treating the patient. After all the conservative modalities have been exhausted, then and only then I will offer an operation to the patient. Whenever possible this operation will involve minimally invasive techniques which have been shown in the literature to reduce hospitalization stays, cost less, and minimize the use of pain medications. Many of the patients have the procedures done as an outpatient and can get back to work the next day with a tiny incision that is barely detectable! I am able to offer cutting edge minimally invasive approaches and look forward to helping you finally get rid of your neck and low back pain. www.dr-virella.com

q: WHY SHOULD I SEE A PROSTHODONTIST FOR MY DENTAL CARE?

a:

HERE ARE 5 IMPORTANT REASONS YOU SHOULD SEE A PROTHODONTIST: 1. Expertise/Education Prosthodontists are known as super general dentists who continued to school an additional 3 years after dental school to specialize in cosmetic and implant dentistry. They are TRUE SPECIALISTS in Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry and can create smiles that last for years. A Prosthodontist is the expert who can offer everything from general and preventative dental treatments to major reconstructive treatment. He is the skilled architect who can restore your mouth to the way it used to be. Prosthodontists look at many different things before starting with treatment and ensure you are well informed. 2. Experience While there are many talented general dentists in the community that perform tooth restoration procedures, they do not have the same level of experience that you will find with a Prosthodontist. A Prosthodontist handles complicated procedures related to tooth restorations everyday, and they simply have more practice, allowing them to make better choices for your treatment. More than likely, your Prosthodontist has dealt with similar cases multiple times and is, therefore, familiar with what works and what does not. 3. Knowledge of the Profession The world of prosthodontics is ever-changing, with new advancements being made every day. For example, dental implants can take weeks to complete with several appointments necessary. But recent developments have made it possible to have functional tooth replacement in just one day. Since a Prosthodontist is involved in the replacement of teeth each and every day, he is constantly learning and experiencing these new techniques and technologies. A Prosthodontist is best suited to inform you of all options and recommend what is best for you. 4. Team Approach Reconstructing your smile is often a team approach involving two or more dental professionals. Generally, the Prosthodontist will serve as your team coordinator, working with other specialists to make sure you receive the best care possible. 5. Function is Important Too A smile makeover can be a life-changing experience for most, but your new look is more than appearances. Even a great-looking cosmetic solution can hide functional flaws, and a Prosthodontist is truly qualified to restore optimal function of your mouth, as well as enhance the look of your smile. www.anacapadental.com

“LOSE THE ‘SENIOR MOMENT’ BLUES” (Follow The Ageless Leaders) WRITTEN BY HERMINE HILTON ‘AMERICA’S MEMORY MOTIVATOR’

24 MC AUGUST.SEPTEMBER 2014

Is There Really Such A Thing As A ‘Senior Moment’? Only if you tell yourself that.

And next time you want to refer to a ‘senior moment’ I suggest you relate it to these:

It’s really a cop-out.

The SENIOR MOMENTS of------

And every time you hear yourself making that excuse when you can’t think of something, you are doing damage. You’re sending a real negative message to your brain, leading your memory down a less than primrose path. We do not have to lose our memory as we age. Decline is not inevitable. * *(A recent Dutch University study showed that memory decline in otherwise healthy people as they age is not due to their aging. It is associated with mild head injury, general anesthesia, or heavy social drinking earlier in life. In healthy people, without such predisposing history, memory remained unimpaired even into extreme old age.)

Victor Hugo … Produced “Les Miserables” at 60, and was still writing poetry at 80.

The fact is, our brains not only can produce new cells to the end of our lives, but the new cells can form new memories-----That is if we let them, instead of killing them off with verbal deterrents. Inability to recall things from time to time is quite normal at any age but taking credit for ‘senior moments’ can be very destructive. And I am often amazed at how many young people these days are taking advantage of that phrase, before they’ve even hit 30. (Someone must have told them that ‘30’ is ‘over the hill’.) We should be praising our memory instead of bad-mouthing it. Positive praise encourages the brain’s capacity to recover some age-related loss of cognitive function. So cut out the ‘senior moment’ gobbledygook. That includes NOT repeating the popular (but definitely not funny) CRS* slogan, [a cleaned up vernacularism for it being *C-an’t R-emember S-tuff ], decorating coffee mugs and Tee shirts everywhere. If you do your memory that favor, I promise to cover in my next article just what you can do to ward off actual age-related memory loss.

Fritz Kreisler … Played his violin as well at 74 as he ever did. Andrew Mellon … the financier and industrialist, served as Secretary of the Treasury until he was 76, and he became Ambassador to Britain after that. Titian … Painted his “Pieta” at 85. George Bernard Shaw … Was still writing plays in his 90’s. Eleanor Roosevelt … Was still a delegate to the United Nations until her death at 78. Goethe … Finished “Faust” Part 2, when he was over 80. Leopold Stokowski … Formed and led the American Symphony Orchestra at 80. Georges Clemenceau … was 76 when he became Premier of France to lead his country to victory in World War I. He presided over the Paris Peace Conference, which drew up the Treaty of Versailles, at the age of 78. Coco Chanel … Was head of a fashion design firm at 85. Mary Baker Eddy … Was directing the Christian Science Church at 89. Pablo Casals … At 88 was still giving cello concerts. Giuseppe Verdi … Wrote his finest opera “Falstaff” when he was 80.

Cornelius Vanderbilt … was older than the present mandatory retirement age when he consolidated his railroad empire and built one of the world’s most immense fortunes. Immanuel Kant … Never said ‘can’t’ and wrote his greatest philosophical works after 70.

And the list goes on.

Exchange your negatives for positives. Nobody (of any age) grows old until they lose enthusiasm for living and stop making memories. Focus on these ageless role models who couldn’t have succeeded as they did without utilizing their memories throughout their lives. I received an exciting phone call today from the publisher, in Virginia, of my last book, “Fuhhgeddaboutit!” (How to stop worrying about your memory). His name is Hal Geiseking (The Business Scribe) and he called to request an autographed photo because he was putting together a new book about authors and was going to write a chapter about me. I was delighted, as he has interviewed and written about really famous people from Presidents to sports figures, entertainment greats, et al. and I’m to be included. Besides writing new books, he logs-he blogs-he texts-he twitters-still glitters, And on his next birthday he’ll be 83. Hal is living proof of what the back cover of my recent book says to people of all ages, “The biggest problem you can have with your memory is thinking you have a problem.” SO, follow the ageless leaders and wash those ‘Senior Moment Blues’ right out of your mind. Everything in nature vibrates at different frequencies. The energetic signals that originate from our outer and inner environments are picked up by the receptors on our Genes and DNA. These epigenetic influences hold the instructions that turn on or turn off the way our DNA communicates information to our cells. Our genes determine much more than just our physical appearance. They also govern how we function as an organism, including our health and susceptibility to disease. WE ALL KNOW HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO EXERCISE, MOVE OUR BODIES AND STAY IN SHAPE. WE ALSO KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO STAY MOTIVATED AND DISCIPLINED. PERHAPS IT IS TIME TO LOOK AT EXERCISE FROM A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE.

Exercise allows us to enjoy a wide array of benefits. The more obvious ones are better energy, weight control and increased libido. But, exercise also serves to boost muscle oxidization and glucose regulation, which results in a biochemical process that can alter DNA expression and delay the onset of diabetes as well as reduce the chance of hereditary and nonhereditary disease. What is particularly fascinating about this methylation process is that it is driven largely by how you live your life. Life is Vibration: Quantum physics describes the universe, inclusive of all matter and life, as being composed of vibrational strings expressed as energy. Albert Einstein believed we are “Vibrational Beings living in a Vibrational Universe.” And Nikola Tesla, world recognized electrical engineer, has stated: “If you wish to understand the Universe, think Energy, Frequency and Vibration”.

Epigenetics and Quality of Life: The embracing of this research has birthed a new science, Epigenetics. This innovative methodology shows us how our environment: the air we breathe; the food we eat; the culture we were born into; or the society we live in- directly affects our vitality, radiance, well-being and our quality of life. Epigenetics also encompasses our perception of how we judge, embrace or view ourselves, in relationship to the experiences we are attracting into our lives. When we start to pay attention to our thoughts, emotions, attitudes, beliefs, actions and even the words we speak, from the simple perspective of Unloving or Loving, we can actually take control over our Quality of Life. Herein lies the link between vibrational frequencies and health. By consciously choosing the highest possible actions coming from a place of Self-Love or Devotion, rather than self-control and discipline, you give yourself the gift of Liberation and celebrate the experience of Abundance, Radiance, Well-Being and Empowerment. Recent studies have shown that epigenetics has more than a profound effect and influence on the expression of our genes. The effects can be passed down from one generation to the next. For example, eating too much may cause obesity, but can also predispose your children to be obese, even before they are conceived.

“EXERCISE OR DIETS CAN BE EASY, ENJOYABLE AND HEALTH SUPPORTING; SIMPLY BY SHIFTING YOUR PERCEPTION OF HOW YOU OBSERVE YOURSELF IN THE RELATIONSHIP TO THE EXPERIENCE.”

The sequence code of your DNA will always remain the same. However you can change how your genes communicate instructions to your cells, which is what the new science of epigenetics is really about. Epigenetics is a tool for empowerment. It gives you a choice over your fate and once you understand its influence your life will flourish. Genes are Influenced by Exercise: A lifestyle factor such as diet and eating the right foods is an epigenetic influence that affects the way your DNA expresses its information to your cells. Just as powerful is the need for exercise. Research has shown that there is an alteration in gene expression after only a few hours of physical activity, which lowers the risk for chronic diseases and also helps maintain energy balance for weight management. Sometimes it can seem difficult to get your body moving, but it is such a crucial aspect to our overall health that it is extremely important to always keep yourself motivated in the most powerful and effective way. Everything is Created by our Choices: The way we go about accomplishing our objectives in our daily life is determined and experienced by the relationship we have with ourselves. How we value, appreciate and love who we really are. The physical world itself is an effect, initiated by the vibrational frequency of energy set in motion from the choice we make between viewing life either through the dark lenses of the ego-mind or from the Loving Eyes of The Heart. Though it may seem that we have many choices, we really only have two. One creates a resistance to achieving our goals; the other welcomes, accepts and embraces the experience. Both choices create our beliefs, thoughts, attitudes, emotions or feelings. All of our experiences are a reflection of how we choose to perceive life. Choosing from the perspective of the Heart always feels Natural, Easy, Vibrant and Joyful. < CONTINUED ON PG. 28 >

LIFEstyle Nurture and Devotion When you embrace the love that resides within, everything is seen as a way to nurture and empower your unfolding life story. Self-Love is at the very core of your well-being, joy, selfempowerment and your ability to create, embrace and celebrate an enriched and abundant life. Choosing the path of Devotion in the awareness of a challenge or opportunity is a way to move out of victim hood into mastery, mastery over your Radiance, Vibrancy and WellBeing. Your attitude towards exercise, diet or your lifestyle takes on another perspective. Instead of resistance and struggle, the program flows in concert to your self -embracement. It is easy and effortless. Joy is a natural state of being and commands the highest level of frequency of any Epigenetic influence. By shifting your choice of living your life from a viewpoint of discipline to a perspective of nurture and lovingness, brings about a more simple methodology, one that is performed and experienced in Joy. Self-Dialogue is Key Our language and words carry the frequency of our intentions. They are powerful epigenetic influences on our DNA, premised on the understanding that the fabric of the universe is vibration. The dialogue that goes on in our head can be sabotaging to your plan of accomplishing your objectives or goals. I am certain that you would be surprised if you could hear a recording of your inner dialogue and become aware of just how many times a day you judge or criticize yourself unforgivingly. The undermining language and words that the ego-mind keeps feeding your subconscious, carries a vibrational frequency that translates into illness, depression or obesity. The Dalai Lama in his book, The Art of Happiness stated: he only way to change something in your life is first to know what it is that you want to change. It is in your highest interest to become consciously aware of how the mind deprives you of 28 MC AUGUST.SEPTEMBER 2014

the experience of Joy. Learn to sculpt your thoughts, words or language so they come from a place of Lovingness and are supportive to your utmost values. When we try to discipline ourselves to follow a specific diet or exercise program, we usually wind up leaving or discontinuing the program based on a logical reason. The mind likes reasons because it controls through reason. It usually comes up with some very good arguments to end the struggle we seem to have with discipline. In the end, the ego perceives the situation as a failure. Discipline is an energy draining mechanism that the mind uses to try to accomplish a result that is motivated out of something other than a Loving act. The “Love” Motivator Exercise or diets can be easy, enjoyable and health supporting; simply by shifting your perception of how you observe yourself in the relationship to the experience. Telling yourself repeatedly that it is a “Good Thing” or reciting affirmations is other than going to give you positive results. Intellectualizing or conceptualizing is a mind function and your motivation comes from “reason,” which is usually backed by a need or fear that holds low-density vibrations that compromises Harmony within your body. However, the most powerful motivational source, one that carries a high vibrational frequency, is the one of Devotion. It stems from the Heart, other than the mind. It is your Divine connection. By simply turning your focus inward to your Heart Centeredness, you are able to feel and embody your Divine connection. The embracement of this experience of “Oneness” allows you to access and implement the most powerful motivational tool: Love. From this platform all goals become easy and effortless. INTERVIEW WITH JASON WROBEL

RAW LIVING (PART III)

AS WE PRINTED IN OUR APRIL/MAY EDITION, YOU MENTIONED BEING EXCITED BY HOW MUCH YOUR FOOD HORIZON HAD EXPANDED WHEN YOU COMMITTED TO EATING RAW/VEGAN. THAT EXPANSION CAN BE SCARY TO SOME PEOPLE WHO DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH A LOT OF THOSE NEWLY FOUND INGREDIENTS. WHERE DOES ONE BEGIN? WHAT ARE THE STAPLES THAT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE IN THEIR PANTRY?

You should look at how many different things you can do with certain ingredients. You can focus more on broadbased choices than the specialty stuff. I would say that there are about five key things that I would have on hand that you could find easily at a Trader Joe’s or a local supermarket now. Quinoa would be one. Quinoa can be used in so many different recipes: breakfast, dessert, and entrees. You can substitute it for rice in dishes. Quinoa would be the first thing that I would have on hand, at all times.

The second thing would be chia seeds. Chia seeds are awesome as well. Again, very easily found and easily accessible. You can grind them up and throw them in a smoothie, or in a fresh juice. You can put them in a pie crust, or you can grind them up and use them as a one-to-one substitute for eggs in your baked goods. Chia seeds are extremely versatile. Another thing I would have on hand, something that I use every single day, would be hemp seed. They are really easy to sprinkle on top of salads, soups, and on top of entrees. You can even make fresh hemp-seed milk, which is high in protein. People always ask how to supplement extra protein, so that’s one way. Hemp seeds are also really great for heart healthy Omega-3s and -6 fatty acids and are very inexpensive and easy to use. Hmmm. Let me go look in the pantry… A good high-quality oil! My favorite go-to is coconut oil. People are using things like canola oil or Crisco, but I would transition to using something like coconut oil because a) it’s extremely versatile, b) it has a high smoke point which means you can cook with it at very high temperatures and it doesn’t become rancid or toxic, and c) it actually boosts your metabolism. Coconut oil is the only oil that has something called medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are metabolism boosters. So the more coconut oil you eat, the faster your metabolism is, so you burn fat, which is pretty awesome. The last thing to change up would be your salt. A lot of people are using regular, iodized table salt, which is completely stripped of all its nutrition and all its trace minerals. Eighty percent of Americans are undermineralized, so getting a good sea salt or

It’s time to stock your pantry, bookmark some raw and vegan recipes, and come back next month for our final installment, which conveniently happens to be our holiday edition. Jason will tell us the two must-have kitchen gadgets every good chef should have and recommend healthy meals to bring to holiday get-togethers.

32 MC AUGUST.SEPTEMBER 2014

Himalayan salt, crystal salt they call it, is a really good way to give additional great flavor to a recipe but also add those essential minerals back into the food. SO THE STAPLES YOU’VE SUGGESTED ALLOW US TO EASILY GET PROTEIN, OMEGA VITAMINS, AND MINERALS FROM PLANT-BASED FOODS. WHAT IS A GOOD SOURCE FOR B VITAMINS?

Most B vitamins are easy to obtain from plant-based sources. B12 is a little more difficult as it gets stored in the body for long periods of time. Ideally you want to take a supplement like nutritional yeast, which is a good one. You can also buy B12-fortified, plantbased milks like coconut, almond, or hemp. You don’t need B12 every single day. The vitamin itself is created by micro-organisms from soil, which animals eat. I don’t necessarily recommend eating dirt, but you can also find vitamin B in wheat grass. Seriously, don’t go to dirt.

EXCELLENT ADVICE. OTHER THAN DIRT, WHAT PLANT-BASED “JUNK” FOODS SHOULD WE AVOID?

Eat as minimally processed foods as possible. People will go to the frozen meals, or to the fake meats, or snacks, and unfortunately some vegan foods do have hydrogenated oil or processed ingredients like keratin or too much soy or gluten. I suggest people be mindful of eating foods that are as low processed as possible, even if it’s plant-based or looks healthy. If there are a million ingredients on the nutritional back panel, and you can’t pronounce them, it’s probably not good for you. Stick to the fewest ingredients you recognize, and to natural sources. Keep it simple.

The Center of Dermatology Care and its Medical Director, Dr. Andrew Kaufman, MD, FACP, is one of the leading dermatology groups in the southwestern United States. Conveniently located in Thousand Oaks, Dr. Kaufman and his team offer the best care technology has to offer for skin care and cosmetic procedures. One of the primary goals of this distinguished medical team is the prevention, early detection and treatment of skin cancers. Dr. Kaufman spends over 90% of his time treating skin cancers and performing necessary reconstruction following skin cancer surgery. Dr. Kaufman is one of a small group of physicians board certified in two specialties -- Internal Medicine (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center) and Dermatology (University of California, Los Angeles). He is one of an elite minority of physicians that has completed a fellowship in Mohs and Dermatologic Surgery (University of California, San Francisco). His practice is limited to Mohs surgery, reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. Skin cancer has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. The number

of skin cancers diagnosed every year in the U.S. exceeds the total of all other types of cancer combined. Skin cancer,

including melanoma, targets younger and younger patients and is one of the most common cancers in both men and women in their twenties and thirties. Skin cancer is a particular concern for Southern California residents, who enjoy almost year-round sunshine and an active, outdoor lifestyle. The specialized skin cancer treatment performed most commonly by Dr. Kaufman is "Mohs Surgery." The Mohs procedure is performed under local anesthesia. A very narrow piece of tissue is taken from the periphery of the visible skin cancer. The specimen is carefully removed, mapped and processed so that 100% of the surgical margins are evaluated for residual tumor. If any cancer is noted under the microscope, another thin margin is removed from the involved area and processed again. This is repeated stage by stage until the roots of the skin cancer are traced out completely. One of the key elements of Mohs surgery is that one person acts as surgeon and pathologist; if either one of those jobs is performed by another doctor, the procedure is not Mohs micrographic surgery. As such, fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons, like Dr. Kaufman, need to have training and expertise in Mohs surgery, dermatopathology (interpretation of microscopic skin slides) and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Kaufman has assembled a highly trained and skilled team for the treatment of medical, surgical and cosmetic problems related to the skin. The Center for Dermatology Care has four board-certified

dermatologists, including Dr. Kaufman. Dr. Christine Cole is board-certified in dermatology and has completed a fellowship in dermatopathology from the prestigious Geisinger Medical Center. Dr. Olenka Speaker is board certified in dermatology, completing her residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York. Dr. Binh Ngo is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at USC-Keck School of Medicine and spends most of her time teaching fellows, residents and medical students at USC. Outside of dermatology, The Center for Dermatology Care is pleased to have Dr. Aric Park as its facial plastic surgeon. Dr. Park completed a fellowship at the distinguished Lasky Clinic in Beverly Hills and University of Southern California after completing a residency in Head and Neck Surgery at Tufts University. His area of expertise complements the surgical and non-surgical procedures performed by the other providers and includes rhinoplasty (nasal surgery), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and rhytidectomy (facelift surgery). Rounding out the team at The Center for Dermatology Care is Dr. David Hsu who is board certified in Radiation Oncology and leads the team in the use of a new technology for the treatment of skin cancer. The Center for Dermatology Care is pleased to announce the addition of electronic brachytherapy to the options available for skin cancer treatment. This new form of radiation therapy is non-invasive and available only in a few dermatology centers in California. It provides an effective form of treatment for patients who wish to avoid surgical treatment or in cases where a non-surgical approach may be preferable. In the cosmetic arena a popular new cosmetic treatment offered by The Center for Dermatology Care is called Coolsculpting. Does removal of fat cells with a simple one-hour treatment sound appealing to you? Coolsculpting is a new alternative to liposuction that helps reduce trouble areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. Each one-hour session focuses on a specific target area, such as those unforgiving love handles, tummy bulges or saddlebags. Coolsculpting is a non-invasive procedure that utilizes cooling technology to safely isolate and destroy fat cells without damaging surrounding tissue, resulting in reduction or elimination of localized fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise. The procedure is FDA approved and over 140,000 treatments have already been performed. Coolsculpting actually destroys fat cells by freezing them so the results are long lasting when you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Apart from managing the Center for Dermatology Care, Dr. Kaufman is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine (Dermatology) at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Clinical Associate Professor at Keck School of Medicine at USC. He is a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery and was previously elected to the Board of Directors of that respected organization. Dr. Kaufman was also nominated and elected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, an honor reserved for physicians dedicated to ongoing individual service and contributions to the practice of medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery as well as the American Academy of Dermatology and is a national and international lecturer at dermatology and facial plastics surgery meetings. If you would like to learn more about the skin care treatments and cosmetic procedures provided by The Center for Dermatology Care, please visit www.dermatology-center.com. McLaren For those who dare to be different By Marcus Amick

T

here’s something to revel in with the distinction of being unique. It’s a characteristic that immediately separates you from the rest whether it’s a taste for vintage wine at a brewery or a tailored blue pinstripe suit in a sea of traditional grey, all of which speaks to McLaren’s special appeal. Since launching in the U.S. in 2011 with the 2012 MP4-12C, McLaren Automotive has aimed to offer automobile enthusiasts something very different in the world of supercars. From legacy models like the F1 to the gorgeous 650S, which replaced the 12C, it’s a philosophy centered on the idea that one should never have to forsake beauty and performance

for a desire to stand out among the crowd. Michael Fuschi, a product specialist for McLaren Calabasas, the newest McLaren dealership in the U.S., said what

makes McLaren partly unique is that the British automaker has chosen to enter a market segment historically dominated by two Italian brands. “The bravery to do this, the brand heritage, reputation in the motorsport world and pedigree for winning is directly translated to all their road cars and all these items typically attract potential clients to the McLaren brand,” explains Fuschi. Originally founded by racing legend Bruce McLaren, the company is the only auto manufacturer to have won the “triple crown” of motorsport racing, which includes The Indy 500, the 24 Hours of LeMans and the Formula One World Championship as well a number of other firsts in racing. No model in the brand’s stable probably better exemplifies that winning spirit than the P1, McLaren’s halo car, < CONTINUED ON PG. 38 >

which sold out of all 375 limited models while still on the stand at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show during its debut. Praised for its advanced technology and truly staggering, mind numbing performance, every detail of the P1 from the streamline body to the air intakes was sculpted to ensure maximum performance. The most recent edition to the McLaren line-up, the 650S Spider, builds on that idea in a convertible model more suited for every day driving. Powered by a 641bhptwin-turbo V8 engine, the new McLaren is a contemporary tribute to the brand’s legacy in the world of Formula 1 racing with a top speed of 207 MPH and a 0 -60 mph time of 2.9 seconds. The car is a dazzling display of McLaren’s advancements in technology with a retractable hard top roof that can be raised or lowered in less than 17 seconds at the push of a button and at speeds of up to 19mph. Touted as one of the versatile supercars on the road, the 650S stands in a class of its own. The 2015 model, which features one of the most technologically advanced

engines in the world, is capable of 641bhp at 8,500rpm. Even more impressive, 95 percent of the car’s peak torque is available between 3,000 – 7,000 rpm. For the 2015 model year, which will consist of only 600 650S units imported to the U.S., the car will feature 3 new colors including Tarocco Orange, Aurora Blue and Mantis Green. Fuschi says the 650S, which sells for $300,000 to $350,000, is a stunning example of McLaren’s no-compromise approach to supercars. “There is no other car built like it on the market in this price range with regards to both the carbon fiber monocell chassis construction or the adaptive, dynamic fluid controlled suspension system,” says the McLaren Calabasas product specialist. “Besides blinding acceleration it is also more usable on a daily basis than any other competitive car in its class. Additionally, the only other cars in the marketplace that accelerate faster 0-100mph or 0-200mph would cost between $1.4M and $2M.” “Nothing can touch the 650S in its respective price range with regards to performance or drivability. Having only been out for 12 weeks, it’s like having your own personal, summertime roller coaster, McLaren style.”

CAN STRESS BE GOOD FOR YOU

This title seems like an oxymoron because we constantly hear about all the negative affects of stress on our body and mind. In fact stress is the leading contributor of chronic illness today. Now there are several recent research studies that indicate positive approaches to stress. Firstly, let’s define stress. It is any strain or force on the body or mind. It is basically a dis-harmony or instability of a once-balanced state. Dr. Hans Selye, the most renowned authority and researcher on stress, defines it simply as the rate of wear and tear on the body. Dr. Selye coined the term stress in 1936 and then gave us the term “eustress”, which is stress that is healthy or gives you a sense of fulfillment. Perhaps getting a promotion or becoming excited when your favorite team wins. The prefix eu- derives from the Greek word meaning either "well" or "good." When attached to the word stress, it literally means "good stress".

We are beginning to understand that with the right mindset about stress, it can be good for us. In a study published in the April, 2013 edition of The Journal of Social and Psychological Sciences, Yale researches showed that training employees to view stress in a positive light results in significant and measurable improvements in job performance and overall health. This study illustrates that our mindset about stress is the key factor in the debilitating effects it can have on us. What we think about we bring about. “While the media is full of stories about the negative impacts of stress, there is a strong, but often underrepresented body of research that shows stress can be good for performance, health and personal growth," stated Alia Crum, one of the research investigators. In this study, 380 employees of an investment bank were put into three groups. One group watched videos showing how stress can be beneficial, the second group watched videos showing how stress can be negative and unhealthy, and a control group did not watch any videos. The stress is beneficial group had a significant reduction in stress-related physical symptoms (such as headaches, backaches, fatigue) and a significant improvement in productivity. So thinking that stress is bad and will create health and various other problems is the culprit. In another study on rats, published in eLife Sciences Publications, researchers found that significant, but brief stressful events, caused stem cells in the brains of rats to turn into new nerve cells. When matured, about two weeks later, the rats had improved mental performance on memory tests. The researchers established that the new nerve cells triggered by

acute stress were the same ones involved in learning new tasks. Dr. Kaufer said that the ultimate message is an optimistic one. She concluded that stress can be something that makes you better, but it is a question of how much, how long, and how you interpret or perceive it. She feels some amounts of stress are good to push you just to the level of optimal alertness, behavioral and cognitive performance. Michael J. Poulin at the University of Buffalo and his team interviewed almost 850 people, between the ages 34-93, living in Detroit, Michigan. Participants were asked to report stressful events they had encountered in the past year and how severe. In the same time period, had they assisted others? Deaths that occurred within the group in the next five years were tracked using obituaries and public death records. Every major stress event increased an individual’s risk of death by 30%. But, overall, this increase was erased for those who reported high rates of helping others, even if they additionally dealt with a lot of stress. The evidence suggests that giving to others significantly reduces stressinduced mortality. We can also use stressful events to learn about ourselves. So many wise people have said, “It’s not what happens to us, but how we react to what happens to us.” Once we begin taking some responsibility for situations we are involved in, then we can grow and change. Life happens through us, not to us. There are always lessons to learn in life if we are open and not playing the victim role. Perhaps somehow, in some way, we even create some stressful events to learn, grow and change. Stress is an inevitable part of our life, especially with the rapid increase in information and technological advances. A new term recently evolved is called “techno stress”. Basically, things are moving and changing faster than ever. We can improve the way we respond to stress and avoid its negative effects by changing the way we perceive it. Therefore stressful situations can become a positive challenge and a teacher that tells us about ourselves by the way we react to it.

MIND

EXTRACT FROM THE BOOK 'THE HOLOCAUST OF ATTACHMENT' BY A. PARTHASARATHY

THE MIND WREAKS HAVOC

Here again the mind would need the active supervision of the intellect to observe a disciplined life with a proper schedule of food intake and exercises for the body. 3. At the emotional level the mind could cause damage to a person if its feelings and emotions have their own way. At every moment of his life they have to be steered by the intellect in the right direction. To cite a few examples: A child may scream to avoid a lifesaving vaccine. Her mother’s emotions may rise and even stop the doctor from giving her the pain and suffering of the vaccine. This could prove fatal to the child. The intellect therefore must overpower such surface emotions and administer the vaccine though painful. Likewise, an elderly person suffering from acute diabetes may be fond of sweets. He may emotionally crave for them. But the doctor does not yield to his mind’s craving. He strictly maintains the rational stance, ‘No more sweets’. In either case, to quote William Shakespeare, ‘you may have to be sometimes cruel only to be kind’. 4. At the intellectual level people adopt different political stances mostly based on the mind’s herd instinct to follow the masses. When the intellect is powerful a person analyses his political options and chooses that which he reckons most appropriate. But the general tendency among humans is to yield to the pressure of the mind. Thus one takes to communism in a communist country. Takes to capitalism in a capitalist country. So on. It is the play of the mind rather than one’s intellectual discretion.

With the lack of control by the intellect the unrestrained mind can cause considerable damage. The extent of damage suffered at different facets of human life is briefly covered below: 1. The minds of personnel left unchecked, uncontrolled develop avarice, greed for unlimited wealth and power. The pressures mount in the absence of intellectual governance. With the result financial institutions resort to limitless lending while the concerned parties indulge in indiscriminate borrowing. And both gravitate to financial losses and crashes. Culminating in bankruptcy. Such actions lacking intellectual acumen would create besides economic crises severe mental agitation in them. 2. At the physical level a mind bereft of intellectual guidance excessively indulges in sensual pleasures of the world. As a result people not only lose their energy and strength but the very pleasure they derive therefrom. Hence you would need a well-governed mind even to enjoy the pleasures of the world. Another problem relating to the body is the mind’s tendency to laze and avoid physical exercises. Causing a loss of fitness and health. 42 MC AUGUST.SEPTEMBER 2014

5. At the spiritual level people with the mind dominating over a weak intellect take to the religion of their family. They succumb to blind belief and fanatic adherence to their particular religion. That has caused bitterness and antagonism in the society. As a result the human race has reached a critical state. Therefore to ensure success and progress in both your material and spiritual life you need to take the expressway of your intellect to avoid the side lanes of the mind slipping into dire consequences.

THIS WHACK-A-MOLE IS NO GAME! WRITTEN BY TRACY RAFTER

Sure, Whack-A-Mole can be a fun game, but what’s not a game is the public policy Whack-A-Mole we’re having to play throughout California on critical issues facing our future. Increasingly, activists who have failed to win on their issues at the state or federal level are strategically shopping their proposals to local city councils, forcing the business community to play city-by-city Whack-A-Mole. Here are three key examples from recent weeks: 1. Eminent Domain of Mortgages. Proponents of a plan to use government’s eminent domain power to seize underwater mortgages from their owners – thus harming future mortgage access in those localities – have targeted the cities of El Monte, La Puente, and Pomona. 2. Local Bans on Oil and Gas Extraction and Transportation, including hydraulic fracturing. Environmental activists opposed to local energy extraction that has been happening safely for decades have targeted Los Angeles, Carson, Culver City and Beverly Hills, among others. (BizFed engaged and helped overturn the oil and gas extraction ban in the City of Carson!) 3. Split Roll Property Tax Proposals. An activist group from the Bay Area got their Split roll proposal on Carson City Council’s agenda. Fortunately, BizFed jumped into action. Leaders like Pilar Hoyos, Watson Land, David Kissinger, South Bay Association of Realtors, and Peter Herzog, NAIOP, made sure our voices were heard and Mayor Jim Dear removed the item from the agenda, effectively taking it off the table.

The good news is that BizFed’s massive and diverse grassroots alliance is actually pretty good at playing this kind of Whack-AMole. But we need your help to be on high

HOPING FOR THE BEST BUT PREPARING FOR THE WORST WRITTEN BY DAVID OLAN

“Both westbound lanes and (1) eastbound lane are currently blocked at the 21000 block of PCH due to a traffic collision. . .”

“Traffic accident on PCH at Big Rock blocking both directions of PCH. Expect delays. . .”

These are just three of the ongoing traffic advisories posted on the City of Malibu Emergency Services website in the last month. Those of us who live and/or work in Malibu know that traffic collisions, whether they are motor vehicle collisions, truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, or bicycle accidents, are too common. No one wants to be in an accident, but if it happens, we wondered, how could we best prepare? We decided to ask Malibu resident and Santa Monica trial lawyer David Olan what, if anything, we could do to prepare for the worst. “I’ve been a trial lawyer for more than 25 years,” says Olan. “If there is one thing I would advise each person to do, it would be to increase their uninsured motorist insurance to the highest level their insurance company would allow.”

46 MC AUGUST.SEPTEMBER 2014

“The cost of protection is pennies to the dollar,” says Olan, “The more you have, the better protected you are should you suffer serious personal injuries or lose a loved one in a wrongful death.” As you would expect, uninsured motorist insurance kicks in if the other driver is uninsured. What few people realize is that uninsured motorist insurance also protects you if the other driver carries limited car insurance. It also protects you if you are a passenger in the car that was hit, if you were a pedestrian who was hit, or in a bicycle accident. Olan explains that too often he has handled accidents in which a passenger, pedestrian, or bicyclist has suffered serious personal injuries, or wrongful death accidents, when someone has lost a loved one. Medical expenses could be in the thousands of dollars, with many more thousands of

“Traffic accident on PCH at Topanga Canyon Boulevard has closed both eastbound lanes. Expect major delays. . .”

dollars expected in the future. In a wrongful death, if the family’s breadwinner is killed, the family may be left with a precarious financial future. Yet, regardless of the losses you incurred, the other driver’s insurance company is only responsible for reimbursing you to the extent of the other driver’s policy limits. “Even if we obtain a $1 million award or more, if the other driver only has the minimum liability insurance California requires (which is $15,000 for the injury or death of one person), that is all the insurance company pays.

In a serious accident, that doesn’t begin to cover your medical bills, much less your lost wages and benefits and so on,” says Olan. Whatever uninsured motorist insurance you carry is activated at the point the other driver’s insurance stops, explains Olan. “Most car insurance policies include some uninsured motorist insurance, but it’s rarely enough,” says Olan. “If I have one piece of advice for people, it is to increase your uninsured motorist insurance to the highest level your insurance company allows.”

“ITS NATIONALLY RESPECTED SCHOOL OF LAW IS RATED AMONG THE BEST; IT INCLUDES THE STRAUS INSTITUTE FOR DISPUTE RESOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN RANKED #1 BY U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT FOR 10 CONSECUTIVE YEARS.”

The institution was founded in 1937 by automotive entrepreneur George Pepperdine (1886 – 1962) who in the worst year of the depression gave $3 million (close to $50 million in today’s dollars) to establish Pepperdine College, on 34 acres in South Central Los Angeles. It began with an inaugural class of 167 students and 22 professors. Today, its student body enrollment is just over 7,000. Pepperdine has entered the 21st Century well positioned as a leading world class, faith-based university with a student to teacher ratio of close to 13 to 1. Pepperdine boasts Seaver College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, where 43 undergraduate majors are offered, including Business Administration, Psychology, Political Sciences, Sports Medicine, and Economics. Graduate programs are also available. Its nationally respected School of Law is rated among the best; it includes the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution that has been ranked #1 by U.S. News and World Report for 10 consecutive years. The Graziadio School of Business and Management has attracted and educated some of the world’s most brilliant minds. At the Graduate School of Education and Psychology, diverse cultures work together to achieve academic excellence and meaningful global service. The School of Public Policy trains leaders in our ever-changing world. In Athletics, Pepperdine is one of only 16 schools that have won NCAA team championships in five different men’s sports: volleyball, baseball, golf, water polo and tennis. The Waves field 16 NCAA Division I men’s and women’s teams and encourage your attendance at their games. My introduction to Pepperdine dates back to 1960. I was then completing my rookie year as a member of the NBA’s Minneapolis Lakers. Team owner, Bob Short, petitioned the NBA’s owners to allow him the right to move the team to Los Angeles. Permission was granted and the NBA’s historic move to the West Coast was on. At that time, the Pepperdine campus was located at 79th St. and Vermont Ave. Thanks to proactive and revered Pepperdine graduate Kenny Hahn (the late veteran politician), Pepperdine became the Lakers first L.A. area training facility – who knew?

Since that time, as a 30 year resident of Malibu, I have enjoyed an active relationship with the university; lecturing in various classes, enjoying the entertainment programs at the Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts, viewing the featured artists at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art, and witnessing the array of presentations at the Payson Library. Continuing its community outreach, in cooperation with publisher, Veera Mahajan and the Malibu Chronicle, Pepperdine Libraries will now engage the citizens of Malibu in a new, innovative program. Under the auspices of Mark Roosa, Dean of Libraries, and Jeanette Woodburn, Director for Library Advancement and Public Affairs, quarterly interactive sessions will be held on campus at Payson Library integrating Los Angeles area professionals and Pepperdine professors with the Malibu community at large. A wide range of subjects will be covered and students are welcome - it’s an exciting format whose time has come. You, too, can play a meaningful role in this vital endeavor. Further announcements will be made regarding the schedule of the programs moderated by yours truly. Stay tuned for effective dates and topics.

CRUISING DOWN THE PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY TOWARDS MALIBU ALWAYS YIELDS THE PROMISE OF AN ADVENTURE FOR ME. AS A HOBBYIST PHOTOGRAPHER, WHOSE PASSION IS WILDLIFE, I OFTEN VISIT MALIBU LAGOON TO PHOTOGRAPH THE LOCAL AND MIGRATORY WATERFOWL AND SHOREBIRDS.

50 MC AUGUST.SEPTEMBER 2014

On a recent visit I was returning to my vehicle. Out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of a Great White egret flying overhead with a sizeable tree branch in its beak. As I continued to observe the egret I noticed it heading towards a large tree in the parking lot of the upscale Malibu County Mart. Curiosity, and the anticipation of discovering something unique and exciting spurred me on. Crossing the Pacific Coast Highway I immediately encountered a loud cacophony of squawks that emanated from the top of the tree. Looking up, my suspicions were confirmed. The tree was home to several pairs of nesting Great White egrets and their chicks. There seemed to be a constant flurry of activity happening 30 feet above the ground. I could see the tops of heads popping up between the branches and then quickly receding. Both parents appeared to take turns leaving the nest, never leaving the chicks alone or unattended for any long length of time. Often they would return with another twig for the nest or bring back food for their chicks.

“THE FEMALE LAYS A CLUTCH OF ANYWHERE FROM 3-5 EGGS.THE EGGS ARE USUALLY LAID AT 2-3 DAY INTERVALS.”

Here are some interesting facts on Great White egrets: Great White egrets are partially migratory and prefer warmer climates such as we have in Southern California. Outside the breeding season Great White egrets can be seen alone or in small flocks of mixed species of shorebirds. When breeding they nest in large colonies, and at night they roost in groups. The breeding season slightly differs depending on the region and location. In our area they breed between the months of October and March. Breeding age for these birds is about 2 years old. Males typically arrive at the breeding territory before the females. They are responsible for choosing the nesting site and beginning construction, before selecting a female mate. After an elaborate courtship ritual, in which the pair bond is established, the egrets settle down to the business of raising a family together. The female lays a clutch of anywhere from 3-5 eggs. The eggs are usually laid at 2-3 day intervals. Both parents share the incubation duties and the eggs are incubated for 23-28 days. The chicks can hatch days apart and there are significant size differences between the oldest and youngest chicks. The hatchlings are capable of limited movement, are covered with down and are not born blind. Both parents feed the chicks regurgitated food. Competition for food is fierce among the chicks. The larger chicks generally monopolize the food during feedings while the smaller ones can starve if there is not enough food to go around. The chicks fledge when they are 42-49 days old. The parents will aggressively defend the nest and their young from intruders. So the next time you’re passing through Malibu in the spring, take time to stop, look up and witness the magic of Malibu that is right in our own backyard! www.fraida-gutovich.artistwebsites.com

ONE HIGHLY BENEFICIAL WAY TO DEFY AGING AND LIVE BETTER IS TO POSITION ONE’S SELF IN A LOW STRESS ENVIRONMENT. STUDIES HAVE FREQUENTLY SHOWN THAT STRESS IS A MAJOR FACTOR IN ILLNESS AND OFTEN ADVANCES THE AGING PROCESS. So why not live in Malibu….the perfect antidote to stress. Endless opportunities to play in the ocean, relax on the beach or retreat into the mountains. Plus, it’s one of the world’s most sound and stable financial investments. Indeed there’s good reason why people flock here in the summer time and pay tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to rent or millions to buy. Because it’s worth it! It’s the price of paradise or, as the sign says, the price you pay to live in “27 miles of scenic beauty.” But, ask anyone who has been here a while and they’ll all tell you the same thing - wouldn’t trade it for anywhere else. Few places in the world offer such a laid back yet sophisticated and healthy lifestyle. While only a short drive from the city, Malibu is a world apart. Enveloped by the sea to the south and mountains to the north it’s an outdoor lover’s paradise where nature offers up an endless bounty of healthy choices every day.

To give some perspective, as of 2014, the population of Los Angeles was a densely packed in 4 million people, as compared to Malibu’s happy, healthy 18,000. Talk about breathing and elbow room. But believe me, the word will continue to get out and more and more are coming both to Los Angeles and to Malibu and, as the demand to live here increases, so inevitably will the prices. So…my advice is to find the right deal now and start enjoying all the health, lifestyle and financial benefits afforded to those lucky enough to live here. DIAMONDS MALIBU GYM, WHERE WORKOUT IS FUN!

I AM A REGULAR AT DIAMOND’S MALIBU GYM. IT IS WONDERFUL TO BE GREETED WITH DIAMOND’S MILLION-DOLLAR SMILE. HE IS EVERYONE’S FRIEND. EVERYONE THERE MAKES YOU FEEL WELCOME AND READY TO WORKOUT. TODAY, I WANTED TO ASK DIAMOND (D) WHAT HIS PLANS WERE AS THE NEW OWNER OF THE GYM. SO, I ASKED HIM A FEW QUESTIONS FOR MALIBU CHRONICLE (MC).

MC: Did you ever dream of owning your own gym? D: Yes, it has been my dream! Ever

since my life turned around! I started many gyms from the ground up. I worked for other people. I worked as a janitor, as a front desk person, I worked as anything you can think of. I put myself through school. I watched how gyms treated their members and thought if I ever own a gym I would treat people totally different.

MC: Different, how? D: With love! I will not look at them as

money. I will look at them as people. Greet them with a smile and a hug. I want this gym to be a family hang out. And it is becoming that. People come here to workout and hangout. It is love when they walk through the door. It is

54 MC AUGUST.SEPTEMBER 2014

not like it was before, like you were walking into the forest. The trees have been leveled and you can actually see what is there. My staff will do whatever they can to make the members even happier and support them in reaching their goals.

MC: Do you discuss this as a plan with your staff? D: No, I never have to discuss it. They

know how I am. I teach by example. I believe all people have good in them. People come here to feel better. You don’t want to walk out pissed for having worked out. I want everyone to walk out thinking, “Oh man, that was cool. I had a wonderful time!” I am happy that people are here. What I am happy mostly about is that ever since I took over the gym, the community is happy. It is a community gym. And, I just want to say Thank You! I have been here 16 years. I had prayed and prayed that someday I could own this gym. I had quietly put that wish, that intention out there and then left it alone. I never like to talk about what I want to do. I tell it to the man upstairs and then I let it go. I keep doing my work. Then one day it happened! One day the past owners came to me and asked me if I wanted it. I said yes!

The community has been behind me ever since that day. They want to support me as much as I want to support them. The gym was actually going to close. And, when I watched all the people asking what they were going to do, especially one day when I saw the kids in the karate class, asking the same question, that was it for me. At that moment, I knew what I had to do. I will continue to have the day care because I believe the moms need their guilt free time for themselves to unwind. There is a lot more I want to do but it will come in little surprises, like when you come home and find something special waiting for you. Everyone asked for towels and now we have towels. Little things like this show care. We might have limitations of what we can do but I want everyone to be comfortable. I want to put a smile on everyone’s face.

MC: Thank you Diamond, that sounds good. D: Thank you!

PS: Diamond welcomes any suggestions. He wants you to come and see the gym’s transformation for yourself because the good just got great!

MIKE AND WIFE KIM CUNNINGHAM MOVED TO MALIBU 16 YEARS AGO AND HAVE ENJOYED LIVING HERE EVERY MINUTE SINCE. THEY ENJOY TRAVELING AND SEEING THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS BACK IN RICHMOND, VIRGINIA. MIKE WENT TO VCU AND KIM ATTENDED VIRGINIA TECH, BUT THEY ALWAYS HAVE A GREAT FEELING WHEN THEY GET BACK TO MALIBU. FOR THE HAPPY COUPLE IT JUST FEELS RIGHT! Mike and Kim were married on Point Dume at an estate on Birdview, overlooking the ocean. They have two beautiful daughters. Maci is an incoming freshman at Malibu High School and Alli will start 4th grade at Point Dume Elementary. “My kids really love it here. They enjoy being outside, they love going to the beach and hiking the many Malibu trails. I love living in Malibu for all the same reasons and knowing also that we live in a really safe town. It's a small community and everyone seems to know each other, which I think is great,” Mike said.

Mike started selling real estate 14 years ago. Besides Malibu’s natural beauty and the incredible properties, a strong selling point, there is the safety and the schools. The schools achieve high rankings for their academic programs. In Malibu Mike has met so many different accomplished people who have become long lasting clients and friends. Their talent and success inspired his wife Kim to start her own talent agency 5 years ago. Kim founded Malibu Artists Agency, representing actors/actresses commercially. Her clients have booked major projects with Apple, Nike, Mercedes Benz, and CarlsJr, just to name a few. “I'm really proud of her,” Mike says with a smile. Mike shares, “Kim was my inspiration in becoming a partner/owner at Pinnacle Estates Malibu. I'm really excited about this opportunity.” Pinnacle will offer international marketing. Michael is ready to use the same tools that he has applied in the past 14 years to make Pinnacle a continued success.

NO

HOW SAYING

WORKS:

BOTH MEN AND WOMEN CAN FIND THEMSELVES TO BE THE VICTIMS OF ABUSE. So, when I say, "Say NO to abuse", I don’t mean to say the word ‘no’ to the abuser to ask him or her to stop abusing you or hurting you. You have said no and begged your abuser to stop hurting you many, many times. That obviously has not worked. And that will never work. The only NO that will work is knowing and saying NO to yourself for accepting or allowing the abuse to happen. It is not easy and it might take a long time for it to work, but it will work if you keep saying NO to yourself – and therefore much more strongly now to your abuser – with words and with action. You need to tell yourself and the abuser that NO, you will not accept abuse of any kind at any time and under any conditions. That is the only way for the NO to have a real meaning for you and for the abuser. The surer you are that you will not accept abuse, the stronger you will get in your fight and the weaker you will make the abuser, who will eventually give up and leave your alone. I know saying NO works because I have been there and it took me years of persistently saying NO and fighting to be free. But, I did it and so can you. I am living a free life now and so will you.
