Keeping an open mind is the best thing one can do for our
personal growth and to learn what we can do for the greater good. I was always against Cannabis (pot) for many reasons. I do not like the smell of pot (smoked). I always thought of Cannabis as a drug that takes you to a la-la land far from reality and also smells up the room. However, now I want to thank my local friend, George, who has encouraged me to learn more about the benefits of the Cannabis oils, which I had so negated. The oils are beneficial in treating many chronic diseases and they help with pain management. I did some research and I continued to hear about the positive values of this natural plant from so many different sources including my own family members. Many local hospitals and pharmaceutical companies Veera Mahajan are working hard to help us all keep an open mind PUBLISHER AND CHIEF EDITOR and to realize that Cannabis is not all bad. The oils when used as a medicine, actually help to kill cancer and enable patients to enjoy a better quality of life. I feel so blessed to be introduced to CannaKids and to CURE Pharmaceuticals who with diligence are working with young children suffering with cancer. I am very excited and proud to showcase CannaKids founder Tracy Ryan with her daughter, Sophie, and Rob Davidson and Wayne Nasby from CURE Pharmaceuticals on our cover. Our desire is to bring you Good News in every issue, and the possibility of saving kids from cancer is the Best News ever. I hope you enjoy the cover story and all the other amazing, educational, and interesting articles in this issue. As always, I look forward to hearing from you. So, please email me to share your story or just to say hello. Have a wonderful and safe summer!

DANCE FITNESS WORKOUTS COREY A. COOMBS AND DENICE V. STAAF
BY
A WELL-KNOWN BENEFIT OF DANCE IS AEROBIC FITNESS. Dance improves the condition of the heart and lungs, increases endurance,
!
muscular strength and motor fitness, and reduces the risk of osteoporosis by increasing bone strength. Many people choose dance classes for their added benefit of being fun. Dance fitness classes are more than just an energizing and kick-butt way to burn calories for an hour—they also boost confidence and self-expression, giving people time to do something for themselves and their body. It’s their “me” time to just let go, enjoy the music, and dance. Dance as a fitness routine teaches participants how to find their center, breathe, and just let go and experience the rhythm. In doing this, a hectic day, along with worries, fears, and self-consciousness, is left behind as participants gain confidence in their body movements, feel the beat of the music, and sweat, sweat, sweat. No one ever complained that a class was too fun, increased their metabolism too much, made them too happy by releasing endorphins, or that their abs were looking too good. Dance fitness classes like my “Cardio Carnival” are a safe place to embrace your inner dance diva. As a Barbados native, I learned dance like I learned walking. Dance was a fluid movement of life. I have always embraced this philosophy. “Cardio Carnival” teaches dance as a life skill, with movements derived from that Caribbean way of life. Its basic movements open up the body to the music and the world. Instead of walking with shoulders rolled forward and closed, in class we open up to accept the music and each other. An additional skill I focus on is breathing; while improper breathing closes off the life force and creates health problems, proper breathing brings life. Dancing is a motor skill that can be learned at any age or stage of growth. Learning the movements to the music and learning to choreograph your own playlist in life is a given outcome of “Cardio Carnival”. I often teach routines for a few minutes every class, because it is a tool to boost memory and is beneficial to adults and children alike. “Cardio Carnival” has been called a ‘spiritual awakening’ by some participants. The high impact cardio workout, with all its physical and emotional benefits, is more than just a fitness class—it is a life lessons class. These lessons are taken back by participants to their families, jobs, and lives. A little piece of the Caribbean goes a long way. •••

BARBADOS born COREY COOMBS started dance training at the age of 8 with the Montreal Afro-Caribbean Dance Company’s hip-hop troupe, before joining the Broadway Dance Center in New York at 18 to train in jazz, modern, and ballet. However, teaching is Corey’s true passion; in addition to his “Cardio Carnival” classes held in Malibu at Diamond’s Malibu Gym, Corey is also a private dance instructor. Check cardiocarnival.com for class times and free downloadable workout videos.

HERA Healthcare A Healthy Mind Creates a Healthy Body BY
JENNIFER MUJICA
! It's a busy weekday, and yet the offices of HERA Health Care are opening late today. Nearby at one of the Yogaworks studios, HERA Health Care’s Dr. Mirela Cernaianu (fondly called Dr. C. by her patients) begins her day with yoga and meditation practice, grounding her body, mind and spirit in a place of optimal health. Dr. Cernaianu knows that she cannot provide wellness for her patients unless she is healthy herself. "HERA" stands for "Holistic Esthetic Restorative Anti-Aging" medical practices. HERA Healthcare is an integrative Obstetrics and Gynecology medical office, and its medical director, Dr. Cernaianu, applies holistic protocols "to every medical problem she treats”, and “looks at every patient from the mind, body, spirit perspective, integrating their medical needs with their spiritual and mental wellness." Dr. Cernaianu is Board Certified in the fields of Obstetrics, Gynecology, Integrative, Holistic, Anti-Aging Care, Regenerative and Restorative Medicines. HERA Health Care believes in approaching medical care with the philosophy that "a Healthy mind creates a Healthy Body." What is Integrative Medicine?
Achieving your personal optimal wellness requires a delicate balance between conventional Western medicine and other holistic practices that care for the body, mind and spirit. Integrative medicine strives to achieve this balance by combining conventional medicine techniques with holistic, natural approaches to health.

How Does Treatment at Hera Health Services Begin?
With Finding the Root Cause. A first visit to HERA Health Services involves a detailed, hour-long consultation with Dr. Cernaianu, or "Dr. C.” in which she learns about her prospective patient’s lifestyle—not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Some questions may include: How's your job going? Is your marriage or relationship healthy and fulfilling? Are you dealing with stress at your job or within your family? Are you facing any personal challenges? How is your financial situation? Do you have any children? Long before any lab tests are drawn or medicine is prescribed, Dr. C. tries to see and understand the whole picture of the person sitting in front of her. These are not standard questions doctors ask their patients in conventional medicine offices. Why would an OB/GYN doctor be asking about your children's college funding, for example? It's simple. Dr. C is looking for the "Root Cause" of a stress that is affecting her patient's overall health. The patient may have come to HERA Health to treat hot flashes; ultimately, Dr. C. finds that the patient is undergoing a career change. This change in life has become stressful, spiking cortisol levels and thus stimulating hormonal imbalance, and....voila! We've found the root cause of the hot flashes. Now her patient can find solutions to deal with the root cause of her health condition – perhaps a life coach or counselor to guide her through her career transition. Along with this, Dr. C. begins her compassionate medical treatments to help the patient return to a healthy body, mind, and spirit balance. Homeostasis — Your Personal Best in Body, Mind, and Spirit Balance
The goal is to reach full homeostasis, the optimal balance of body, mind and spiritual health. Upon reaching homeostasis, you can be in such great health that you can literally ward off disease—even chronic disease! Chronic illnesses addressed by HERA Health Care apart from women's overall health conditions include autoimmune disorders, Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism, arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, to name a few.
Treatment at HERA Health Care
Most of HERA Health Care’s medical protocols are natural treatments, such as vitamins supplements, herbal products, lifestyle changes and hormone balance or replacement. Yoga and meditation are also highly recommended by Dr. C to all of her patients. She suggests a nutritional analysis to look for deficiencies in key vitamins and minerals that people need throughout all stages of life. She guides her patients through the maze of supplements and vitamins that are best for their personal wellness. The ultimate goal at HERA Health is always, HEALTHY MIND, HEALTHY BODY. In addition to such natural treatment, HERA Health offers other professional and cutting-edge treatments, including Hormonal Replacement Therapy, MonaLisa Touch, adrenal healthcare, and anti-aging skincare with the NU SKIN Facial Spa. Hormone Replacement Therapy SottoPelle Therapy
At Hera Health Care, a highly effective hormone replacement therapy called SottoPelle therapy is utilized to stablize hormonal imbalances. SottoPelle therapy is based on prescribing biologically identical hormones through the most effective delivery system of pellet therapy. Pellet Therapy
Sottopelle therapy consists of injecting pellets of bio identical estradiol and testosterone into the upper hip area, a simple procedure that is done under local anesthesia and takes 5 minutes to execute. The treatment is given every 3-4 months for women and every 6 months for men. It does not require daily creams, pills or weekly patches. Sottopelle therapy achieves steady state levels of hormones in the blood, as opposed to other therapies that require peak and trough levels; thus pellet therapy is much more effective for treatment of
fatigue and mood issues, and does wonders for the libido, as some patients have testified. It is also the only method in which the hormones are essentially bioavailable, meaning the degree and rate at which they can be absorbed into the bloodstream is controllable. Not all physicians that practice hormone management in the United States are trained to provide the Pellet Hormone Therapy, like Dr. Cernaianu is. MonaLisa Touch
MonaLisa Touch is an innovative laser procedure that restores vaginal health. It involves no hormones, pills, or anesthesia, and no down time. This method is a fractional carbon dioxide laser therapy procedure that restores vaginal health with three painless, five-minute sessions, each six weeks apart. Who is a candidate for the MonaLisa Touch treatment?
Patients with symptoms of menopause, painful sex, vaginal dryness, frequent urinary infections after menopause, those with a history of breast cancer, thrombophlebitis, or other contraindications to estrogen therapy, or inadequate response to estrogen therapy are good candidates for the MonaLisa treatment. Patients who experience a decline of positive results with estrogen treatment, and premenopausal women who have had their ovaries removed are also good candidates. Where can I have the MonaLisa Touch treatment?
The MonaLisa Touch is a quick, simple and safe procedure that will be done in the HERA Health Care office. The procedure is performed by Dr. Mirela Cernaianu, a board certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist. •••

Black Lambo. RAH with DJ Khaled
! Wow…Really? That is what I thought when I met this local young artist from Malibu/Detroit at an event I was covering for Malibu Chronicle. He looked handRAH with DJ Khaled some with a personality that showed confidence, love and peace. He is easy to talk to. Very respectful and knows how to have a good time. Is it even legal to look that good? Yes, even though it is cutting close. Later we met Rah in his studio, and he is all work. He is focused on his music. You can see his commitment to his project whether he is singing at the rehearsals or at voice lessons, making music or writing lyrics. He is proud, confident and totally entertaining when he performs. He is a true artist and an entertainer. He has it all, the looks, the soothing melodic voice, the deep sense of art and lyrics. I have no doubt that he will do great on the charts as soon as his new cd JACKETS IN MALIBU is released. In the meantime, please visit his website to download his recently released song “BLACK LAMBO” featuring DJ Khaled. What Rah says about himself: “As an artist I feel the responsibility to show a character that is both relatable and who displays forward thinking and new ideas. As I release more songs you will see more of what I'm about. Sometimes a flashy playboy, I also have a turbulent and deep relationship with love. Through my own words, style and voice I present my view on life’s important topics in a dark R&B sound with hip hop and dance roots. With JACKETS IN MALIBU I plan to build my visual portfolio focusing on artistic details like colors, line and content of the frames. I am inspired by this short film music video style since watching ‘Thriller’, ‘Smooth Criminal’, ‘Beat It’, and every other Michael Jackson video since I was a young child. My goal is to create huge masterpieces like "Runaway” - Kanye West and "Lemonade” - Beyonce. Hope you follow and Enjoy!” Witt Moore, Rah’s Producer/Manager, met Rah about 8 years ago in Detroit through a mutual friend. They built a relationship over the years while working with another Artist. Throughout that process they would occasionally work on music together. Over time, Moore watched Rah mature and grow in his talent. About a year ago, Moore started to see a lot of potential and saw Rah’s dedication to this music grind so he offered his expertise and knowledge in the music business and they started to build a stronger working relationship. Soon they decided it was time for Moore to come to LA and help Rah put together a body of work that would really take off. Moore came to LA with his producer and partner Dre Butterz and the rest is history. They made JACKETS IN MALIBU off of pure organic energy. You can check out his website at www.rahtwofive.com

“ IT'S TIME
TO STOP AGING YOURSELF”
[AGE is just a number...OLD is an emotion] HERMINE HILTON “America's Memory Motivator”
BY
ARE YOU ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE... …who is constantly reminding everyone that you are old? And how old is that? Are you 90 or are you 20? Yes, I said 20. There are definitely 20 yearolds that, because their teen years are gone, think of themselves as old. Well, here's the skinny: 'age' is just a number—but 'old' is an emotion. So get over it! It's time to stop aging yourself. No matter your age, if you 'think' old you'll be old. O.T.O.H. (on the other hand)—if you think young, you'll thrive. I'm sure Frank Sinatra didn't think of himself as old when he was singing “Young At Heart” in his 70's. That old adage,“you're only as old as you feel,” is spot-on and indubitably true. I know people in their 80's who are more youthful than others I know in their 30's. It's all in the way you think and feel about yourself. And it has nothing to do with gray hair or wrinkles. That's just on the outside. But it has everything to do with all that's on the inside. And that's where your rejuvenation should start. Sure, you can color the gray, implant some new follicles, or botox the heck out of those wrinkles, but it won't change a thing if you don't rejuvenate your thinking.

DON'T WEAR YOUR ACHES AND PAINS LIKE A BADGE OF HONOR... …You won't get a medal for spouting out about them. The more attention you give them, the more discomfort they'll give you, and it only makes others uncomfortable. And you don't want to do that. I know you don't. Take a lesson from the late Muhammad Ali who, having suffered for years with the debilitating Parkinson's disease, still managed to light that Olympic Torch in Atlanta in 1996 while 3.5 billion TV viewers watched. So cut out the complaining. Keep the aches and pains in the vault. No one enjoys a pity party. Your kids would rather hear that you just baked a cake, rather than that you just faked an ache. And while you're at it, think about changing some of the things you're doing or not doing. Stop sending yourself and others excuses for your behavior because of how many years you've occupied a place on this planet. Excuses like, you can't do this or that or the other because you're not 21 anymore and you're just too old— No you're not. Who says so? Only you. So stuff it!
GET UP FROM THAT COUCH... …You're not a potato. Take a walk, even if you need a walker. Sing a song, wiggle your butt, even if it weighs a ton, who cares – I don't, why should you? I just want to share a smile that comes from someone with a twinkle in their eyes. And if your belly's hanging over your belt don't blame it on the fact that you're antediluvian, just stop stuffing your face. Don't let it make you a stay-at-
home. Stuff your face all you want but get yourself to the party. Don't just settle for staring into the boob tube: Take a trip to Katmandu; read a romance novel (that might restart your ignition); go to a casino (spend a couple o’ bucks and smile at the dealer); swing on a swing (it's a great way to get high); shop for some new underwear; picture your favorite movie star naked; see “The Wizard of Oz” again; write a love letter to your mate (bet you haven't done that in a while)—it'll make you feel young and your mate will be pleasantly aroused (it might even wake him or her up). Just do it.
BE INSPIRED... …There's an article I wrote a while back that you can find online at www.MalibuChronicle.com that should help inspire you. It's called “Follow The Ageless Leaders”, none of whom worried about age. Just put my name, HERMINE, in the home page search engine and scroll down. You'll be downright surprised and it Grandma Moses should vanquish any age worries you have invading your cranium. It will probably make you feel like a juvenile to learn that Grandma Moses didn't even start painting until she was near 80, which is the age Nelson Mandela was when he married for the third time. Don't be the person who has to park right next to the restaurant or department store because you don't feel like walking a few steps from the parking lot. Exercise is good for you. It keeps you young. It's good for your body and for everybody. It doesn't
matter how slow or fast you walk, just let yourself know you can do it. I'm not suggesting you sprint your way to your destination, I'm just proposing that you energize your spirit. And don't blame your memory or lack of it on your years, or your 'senior moments'. Blame it on your lack of focus. (The only real excuse for poor memory is not your age, unless you have dementia, and if you're reading this article, you don't have it.)
YOUR CHRONOLOGY DESERVES BRAGGING RIGHTS... …not the other way around. You've probably survived loads of ups and downs (the downs perhaps being more prevalent), so if you're still breathing, be proud of it. Think of all the positives that got you to this point and look forward to all that's ahead. Don't become addicted to complaining and blaming it on your years. No matter your age, people don't want to feel sorry for you. They want to feel happy for you. Many of you readers know that I walk up a mountain canyon most days of the week. It's surprising how many people driving that mountain road who are used to seeing me climbing as we exchange waves will stop their cars to let me know that they could do what I do if only they were younger—when in most cases I'm older than they are (and I have a bum leg to boot). But I'm younger inside my head –so I'll probably keep walking up that mountain until I'm 125.*

ORGANIZATION, Last Chance for Animals, will hold their annual gala at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on Saturday, October 22, 2016. LCA was founded in 1984 by Chris DeRose, and for the past thirty-two years, its Sam Simon Special Investigations Unit has conducted undercover investigations that have exposed horrific cruelty. Bringing the evidence to light and working with the appropriate authorities, LCA has saved countless numbers of animals all around the world. Every year, LCA hosts a fun, entertaining evening, and shares the year’s accomplishments with friends and supporters who make its work and victories possible. On that evening, LCA honors compassionate individuals who dedicate their lives to ending animal abuse and suffering. This year, LCA will honor long-time friend, activist and Malibu resident, Cindy Landon, for her philanthropic work that has spanned decades. Cindy’s philanthropy began at an early age and since then has become an integral part of who she is. Expressing her activism in many bold and creative ways, Cindy gives generously to many different causes and groups that are dedicated to helping animals, children, and the environment, and finding a cure for pancreatic cancer. She also invests in and produces documentary films that tell important stories and bring awareness to significant causes, such as Whaledreamers (2006), After Kony: Staging Hope (2011) and the upcoming documentary film The Game Changers, which Cindy executive produced alongside James Cameron. Cindy’s philanthropic interests have recently expanded into the culinary realm through her partnership with chef Matthew Kenney to open Plant Food + Wine in Venice Beach and Miami. At fifteen years old Cindy chose a vegetarian lifestyle for ethical reasons, which later evolved into a vegan lifestyle due to her growing resolution against animal cruelty. Plant Food + Wine expresses Cindy’s pro-
found passion for healthy and compassionate living through vegan cuisine made with utmost creativity and artistry. This year, LCA will also honor wellness activist and New York Times best-selling author Kathy Freston for her commitment to a vegan lifestyle, and her passion to educate others about healthy living and conscious eating. Kathy’s books, including THE LEAN: A Revolutionary (and Simple!) 30-Day Plan for Healthy, Lasting Weight Loss, Veganist, Quantum Wellness, and The One, promote a full body/mind/soul approach to health and happiness, centering on a plant-based diet for physical, environmental, and ethical reasons. Instant bestsellers, the books have earned Kathy world recognition. She has appeared on Ellen, Dr. Oz, Good Morning America, Oprah, Extra and Charlie Rose, and has been featured notably in Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Self, W, and Fitness. Kathy is also a regular contributor to the Huffington Post, which provides another incredible outlet for her to promote a compassionate lifestyle. LCA will additionally honor long-time friend (and unofficial advisor), retired Los Angeles prosecutor Robert Ferber. Bob has been an animal crusader in the legal profession for many years, and was the nation’s first full-time animal cruelty prosecutor. Bob was moreover instrumental in forming the Los Angeles Animal Cruelty Task Force, and developed guidelines and procedures now used by prosecutors nationwide. Thanks to Bob, the LAPD, LA Sheriff’s Department, LA City Attorneys, LA District Attorney and now Ventura County’s first team of animal cruelty investigators and Ventura County DA all receive animal cruelty training. He has rescued innumerable unwanted, disabled dogs, cats and rats and since retiring from government three years ago, stays busy volunteering at the local shelter and serving on the boards of the Cancer Support Community and several animal non-profits. He also serves as Vice President of the Mary Jo and Hank Greenberg Animal Welfare
Foundation. A true defender of justice and animals, LCA will honor Bob for the extraordinary changes he has created for animals across the country. Last but certainly not least, LCA will honor two of the bravest men walking the planet today, director of the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Emmanuel de Merode, and head of Virunga’s Air Wing, Anthony Caere. Instability, sporadic violence, poor transportation infrastructure, and overall poor security make the DRC one of the most dangerous places on earth. Since the ’90s, armed poachers and roving militias have been warring in Virunga National Park, outnumbering park rangers 10 to 1. One hundred forty rangers have been killed protecting the flora and fauna in Virunga National Park; eleven died in the first seven months of 2011. In spite of such danger, Emmanuel de Merode and Anthony Caere have committed their lives to protecting the mountain gorillas and other wildlife from poachers, risking their lives daily. LCA is giving Emmanuel and Anthony its highest honor, the Albert Schweitzer award, for their incredible courage and reverence for all life. Since 2006, LCA has supported the rangers in Uganda and Rwanda by providing them with equipment to aid in protecting the gorillas, including aerial communications systems with 11 outstations, Motorola handheld radios, Garmin GPS units, rain suits and camouflaged surveillance cameras. By increasing the range and speed of communication, such equipment vastly improves all park operations and positively enhances the safety of the gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda. Now, LCA is focusing its campaign efforts on the urgent needs of the Congolese rangers who live and work under life threatening conditions to protect mountain gorillas and all wildlife in Virunga Park against poachers and local militias. This, along with LCA’s recent investigations and campaigns, will be the focus of LCA’s 2016 gala. •••

FRANK PERNA Oldest Triathlete Participant BY
CLAIRE GRADY
! Frank Perna is recovering from a complete knee replacement, but that will not stop him from competing in his ninth triathlon. At 78 years old, Frank is the oldest competitor in this year’s Nautica Malibu Triathlon, which will take place September 17th and 18th in celebration of its 30th year sponsoring the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. In spite of his age, he frequently leads his age bracket in this race. Frank’s commitment to health and fitness extends beyond his triathlon training; when not prepping for the half-mile swim, 18 mile bike ride and 4 mile run, he can be found helicopter snowboarding or paddle surfing. When it comes to working out, variety is the spice of life for Frank, who dabbles in several sports to avoid monotony. In addition to working out with his trainer, Frank tries to do something active every day, whether it be tennis or a relaxing stroll with his wife. While he has always been physically active, it was Frank’s kids who first sparked his interest to do the Nautica Malibu
Triathlon eight years ago. Now a veteran to the race, Frank has competed every year since. Of course at his age, however, Frank’s training has not been without setbacks. Aside from his recent knee replacement, he also broke his back from mountain biking 10 years ago. Though for adrenaline junkies like Frank, recovery and immobility can be stifling, he acknowledges the importance of rehabilitation, which he notes is a workout in itself. Though now semi-retired, Frank has been the CEO of various software companies, and still invests in up-and-coming computer technology companies and mentors small businesses looking to grow in the software industry. In his youth, career was his priority over fitness; he ran a few marathons in his twenties and thirties, but his true thrill-seeking nature did not fully unveil itself until retirement. His active personality has trickled down to his three children, who are all excellent skiers. Though it may seem like Frank is addicted to fitness, he says ironically that his favorite aspect of working out is finishing. Like many, he feels the endorphin rush that comes immediately after physical activity is enough to push him through the times when he would prefer to sit on the couch. When asked what advice he has for others looking to become more active, Frank says, “Just do it. Get up, start moving and try to do something every day.” Making health a priority in his retirement did not arise after a medical scare, but as a conscious decision to stay active. He hopes that other people his age learn to adopt the same mentality and try new things. “Hopefully,” he says, “they’ll find something that they really enjoy doing and it won’t feel like a chore.” •••

KRISTINE STEW HASS
Albert Scaglione gets it. HE GETS THE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP PEOPLE HAVE WITH ART. HE GETS THAT COLLECTORS APPRECIATE THEIR ART AT A DEEPER LEVEL WHEN THEY CONNECT WITH ARTISTS AND HEAR THEIR STORIES. HE GETS THAT TAKING FINE ART OUT OF THE GALLERY AND BRINGING IT DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE OPENS NOT ONLY THE DOORS OF OPPORTUNITY FOR HIS BUSINESS BUT FOR MORE PEOPLE TO EXPERIENCE THE GENUINE ENJOYMENT OF OWNING FINE ART.
He gets that collectors appreciate their art at a deeper level when they connect with artists and hear their stories. He gets that taking fine art out of the gallery and bringing it directly to the people opens not only the doors of opportunity for his business but for more people to experience the genuine enjoyment of owning fine art. He also gets that hard work and discipline pay off in business and in life. He credits his discipline to his father. “I started working with him hauling industrial waste at the age of eight and stayed at it through the beginning of college,” he said. “It gave me a great work ethic – which has translated into my family and business, as well as my attitude toward fitness.
SINCE FOUNDING PARK WEST GALLERY IN 1969, ALBERT SCAGLIONE HAS COMPLETELY TRANSFORMED ART COLLECTING. BY MIXING HIS PASSION FOR ART WITH INGENUITY, INNOVATION AND HARD WORK, HE’S RAISED THE LEVEL OF EXCITEMENT IN FINE ART COLLECTING BY TAKING ART OUTSIDE OF THE TRADITIONAL GALLERY WALLS AND MAKING THE PARK WEST GALLERY EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE TO THE WORLD. PETER MAX, YAACOV AGAM, LINDA LE KINFF, ITSZAKTARKAY, LEBO, CSABA MARKUS, ROMERO BRITTO, SCOTT JACOBS AND CHILD PRODIGY AUTUMN DE FOREST ARE JUST A FEW OF THE CELEBRATED ARTISTS REPRESENTED BY PARK WEST GALLERY. Trainer Billy Beck says with a guy like Albert Scaglione – who has so much going on – a workout begins with a warm up that requires undivided attention. Some people walk on a treadmill for a warm up – for Scaglione, Beck says he lets him go “all Rocky Balboa-style” on a speed bag. “You can’t hit a speed bag without being 100percent there,” Beck said.

“Fitness is for life,” he says, confessing his approach to wellbeing is more strategy and less philosophy. Since founding Park West Gallery 45 years ago, he’s been a man on the move, building his business and innovatively transforming the way fine art is bought and sold around the world. It’s an understatement to say he’s naturally energetic, a trait that’s served him well for many years considering his jet-set lifestyle. But about 15 years ago, Scaglione decided to prioritize his fitness by making it part of his regular routine. “I work out daily with maybe only one or two days off in a week,” Scaglione said. He sticks to a healthy protein-rich diet, eating four or five smaller meals each day. He also keeps well hydrated, drinking five to six liters of water daily. “My diet is typically
right on when I'm at home either in Michigan or Florida, and by making an effort, I can usually keep my diet right even when traveling,” he said. Scaglione’s fitness regime has long included strength training and swimming. When in Florida, he works on cardio and strength training with Miami-based fitness expert, Billy Beck. “My greatest challenge isn't motivating Albert to work out, it's getting him to stop," Beck laughed. He adjusts the workout depending on Scaglione’s travel schedule, making sure muscles have adequate rest and recovery time. “Albert does much of the same workout I use to train some of the NFL players I work with. He’s in great shape,” Beck said. “Albert always gives me entrepreneur-to-entrepreneur
THE PROWLER: Albert pushes the lead-weighted prowler through an outdoor course. Beck said he likes a circuit to be functional. “The prowler gives you the opportunity to gain real strength, working the muscles you may actually use in life,” he said. The prowler also offers a combination of cardio and strength training.
“YOGA IS AMAZING TO COMBINE WITH STRENGTH TRAINING. It's absolutely necessary for flexibility. The benefits of combining yoga with strength training for my overall general health and well-being are immeasurable. I feel great, and at my age, am able to keep up with my busy schedule and play volleyball and other sports I still enjoy.” SLEDGE HAMMER/WAR HAMMER: As Albert warms up in his upper body circuit training, he moves from swinging a sledgehammer to the heavier war hammer.

advice,” Beck said. He said he appreciates the questions Scaglione asks, offering Beck a mental workout. “He makes me think more, and makes me a better person because he’s inspiring,” said Beck. “He’s the type of person I’d like to be when I’m his age.” Scaglione keeps up with strength and cardio workouts in his home gyms and when traveling. “I can usually find a gym somewhere, making it relatively easy to maintain some form of training,” he said. “At the minimum, I can always do certain exercises in my hotel room.” A few years ago, recovery from rotator cuff surgery introduced him to yoga, and he’s been a fan ever since. He favors Bikram Yoga, which he practices at Detroit Bikram in Farmington Hills, Mich., but he also does Ashtanga yoga. “Yoga is amazing to combine with strength training,” he said, adding that it's absolutely necessary for flexibility. “The benefits of combining yoga with strength training for my overall general health and well-being are immeasurable,” he said. “I feel great, and at my age, am able to keep up with my busy schedule and play volleyball and other sports I still enjoy.” It’s only Scaglione’s life story that betrays his age. Born in 1939, the New Jersey native can reminisce with the best about an all-American childhood on the heels of the Great Depression and Second World War. You can picture it - Catholic school nuns, hard-working parents, errands for mom to the corner store, knowing the neighbors with the cookies and those whose grass you had to keep off, squeaking through high school (because he was too busy earning money), and the satisfaction of buying his first car – a 1956 Olds Ninety-Eight convertible with a Continental kit. So even after you hear the stories and imagine him as a kid on the set of Ozzie and Harriet, when he’s standing in front of you, it’s hard to connect the dots and get that this guy is closing in on 75. At 30, with a doctorate in mechanical engineering, Scaglione had a career epiphany of sorts. He had been teaching college courses and researching for a NASA Mars exploration program at Detroit’s Wayne State University, when government funding shifted from space to defense. His passion for his work changed, so he decided he’d follow suit and change careers. With a leap of faith and a little experience (he worked at a cousin’s art gallery as a teen), he mortgaged his house and in 1969 opened Park West Gallery in Michigan. That original 900-square-foot space is not far
Albert and Peter Max
from where the current 63,000-square-foot Greco-Roman style gallery sits today. (Park West Gallery also has a gallery and 181,000-square-foot, business, framing and distribution center in Miami Lakes, Florida.) Within just a few short years, the charismatic Scaglione established relationships with prominent artists, including the father of kinetic art, Yaacov Agam, and pop art icon, Peter Max. Scaglione took his concept of holding fine art auctions regionally, then nationally, then eventually to the world. Park West Gallery now sells art at hundreds of locations worldwide on cruise ships and at exclusive hotels. Scaglione’s passion for his faith, family and work motivate him to keep fitness right near the top of his daily to-do list. He starts his day with an hour of prayer, and then he exercises before tackling the day. “It is the total spiritual, physical and mental coalition that really makes it all work,” he says. His advice to others? “Mental discipline and a consistent steady routine, and when things are not going right or you're not completely consistent, don't give up. Go right back at it,” he said. “The benefits of a better quality of life are priceless.” •••

MARCY LIBERMAN
In the world of beauty, both men and women have the constant desire to remain up-to-date on cuttingedge new products, technology, and medical breakthroughs regarding beauty and sustained youth. Some of the latest techniques and products in the skincare world include:
RADIO FREQUENCY… Radio fre-
quency uses a safe radiative energy to heat up the skin and stimulate collagen production on the tissue below the dermis. The new growth of collagen and elastin makes the skin appear firmer and tighter, making radio frequency treatment ideal for anti-aging.
CRYOCLEAR…
PEARL FACIAL… Pearl facial treatments
were developed by the ancient Chinese. Pearl powder makes the skin radiant, adds amino acids and antioxidants, and helps balance the skin.
SEAWEED… Seaweed has natural anti-
inflammatory compounds, and can help with acne by cleansing and exfoliating the skin. Seaweed also nourishes and strengthens the scalp and hair.
SHEET MASKS… Korean sheet
masks have become very popular in the past year. These masks are typically made of cotton or rice fiber, and are cut to the shape of the face. They are designed to brighten, hydrate and refresh the skin with skin-loving vitamins and moisture.
Cryotherapy is one of the latest popular trends, using extremely cold temperatures to shock the body into stimulating blood circulation and the immune system. It has recently become a popular anti-aging treatment. A system of cyrotherapy on the market called CryoClear uses carbon dioxide to freeze age spots, skin tags and sun spots, and has a 95% success rate in getting rid of spots on the hands, face, neck and chest.

golf, or other activities like traveling, reading, driving, or even simple daily tasks. In addition to Pi in eye, other eye procedures such as Lasik, Kamra Inlay, and “raindrop” surgery, can also help individuals achieve excellent vision through corrective surgery.
Can I have 20/20 vision at any age?
What is Pi in eye surgery and what are its benefits?
As people age, near vision impairment can occur over time as the eyes begin to deteriorate. This process is referred to as presbyopia. Most people in their forties thus inevitably begin to wear glasses, if they don’t already, and find it difficult to read menus, medicine bottles, and experience the world around them with the vision that they once had.
Pi in eye surgery involves replacing one’s natural eye lens with an artificial Presbyopic implant (Pi) lens, allowing the patient to see near, middle, and distance, without the use of glasses. Additionally, it prevents the development of eye cataracts, saving patients from having to undergo additional eye surgeries in the future. As vision is one of the most valuable assets of youth, being able to regain perfect sight at an older age truly defies the aging process.
Though aging is a natural process of life, with the aid of modern technology, poor vision can be treated, allowing people to live with 20/20 vision at any age. A highly advanced surgery called Pi in eye (Pi) is an advanced procedure that can alleviate all of these vision issues.
Is Pi in eye surgery right for me? The Pi in eye procedure is recommended for people of various lifestyles, including those involved in outdoor sports such as

How necessary is Pi in eye and where can I get it? The Pi in eye procedure is life-changing and will greatly enhance one’s vision and overall quality of life. From the local issues impacting her seaside hometown of Malibu, to the heart-wrenching yet inspiring travails of supporting CannaKids toward battling cancer in children,
Ms. Mahajan makes it clear we are together in this thing called life, and that great obstacles can be overcome when we unite behind what she likes to call our unifying spirit.
“It’s why I really got into publishing,” the chief editor of the Malibu Chronicle says, matter-of-factly. “To cast a wide net over our entire community, and bring people together for the good of the whole, and for wholeness, the nurturing of all that is good. I learned from a very young age the absolute importance of being in the we business, not the me busy-ness.” To look around the ebullient Mahajan’s hillside home is to gain a deeper insight into her message of inclusiveness, and unity of spirit. Aside from the cluster of our unattended lunch dishes in the sink, hers is a tidy house, one seemingly designed for the joyful productivity and purpose that has gone on here since the “UNREPORTED” author took residence there in 2011. Framed photographs featuring the attractive, sloe-eyed Mahajan alongside friends and associates occupy the flat surfaces of this peaceful living-work space. In a picture on the bookcase to her left she is arm-in-arm with a local real estate developer during a recent charity event in Calabasas. In the photographs balanced atop her sturdy office desk, she is the image of hope as she bonds with women at a domestic violence seminar in Santa Monica, and with founders of Last Chance for Animals (LCA) at a fundraiser in Beverly Hills. All are smiling in these photographs; all are happy to be there. Various groups, various people unified behind the collective spirit of optimism and can-do strength that has been Ms. Mahajan’s inner narrative as long as she can remember. “I’m from Detroit,” she says proudly. “In Detroit, they don’t just build cars. They build engines, headlights --all the things that go into what we call cars. It’s that collaborative, extremely thorough mindset we bring to our work at the Malibu Chronicle. Whether the issue is Cannakids, beach erosion, or the truly phenomenal advancements being made by our very own local plastic surgeons, Malibu Chronicle readers know that this is their magazine, this is their voice.” And with these confident-sounding words the petite dynamo rises from her chair, two empty teacups in her hands as she glides into the kitchen to survey the contents of the sink. “Wash or dry?” she asks, putting the teacups down and rolling up her red sleeves with a broad grin. “We’re going to get these things sparkling again in no time. Together this is going to be easy.”
A unifying, expansive spirit indeed.

“If you want to fall in love, go here. Dreamers, this is your paradise.”
DREAMERS, Italy Is Your Paradise BY
KELLY SCHNEIDER
! Often considered the most romantic city in the world, Paris, France is fondly regarded worldwide, and is synonymous with ideas of love and fairytales. Why yes, I have visited Paris, and while it is everything one could imagine—quaint cafés serving delicious tarts, the sparkling lights of the Eiffel tower, and everyone speaking in an eloquent language one cannot quite master—I have found a city that is, in my opinion, far more romantic than Paris: this city is Venice, Italy. Atop a vast, enveloping blue ocean, this mysterious city on water has virtually no explanation for its existence. If you want to fall in love, go here. Dreamers, this is your paradise. Walk endlessly along the streets and canals that twist and turn; continue walking as you wander for hours without direction. This city will swallow you whole with its majestic sunsets, world-class Italian
cuisine, and breathtaking cultural atmosphere. There is an air of mystery and enchantment that undeniably pervades this city, stemming from its historic annual carnival celebration. Yet regardless of the time of year they may visit, travelers can experience carnival influences and purchase trinkets to represent this culturally significant event. In the evening, after enjoying a refreshing Negroni and an ample share of pasta a la carbonara, step into one of the piazzas and hear an orchestra-worthy performance from one of the local restaurant’s live quartets. Step back in time with this experience and fall in love—in love with a romantic partner, in love with yourself, in love with an idea, inspiration, or simply life itself. It is impossible to visit Venezzia and not feel inspired or enthralled down to your bones. •••

CAREFREE BOAT CLUB
My Boating Lifestyle, With No Headaches! DAVID STONE, MALIBU RESIDENT AND CAREFREE BOAT CLUB MEMBER BY
! I’VE BEEN BOATING SINCE THE 1980S AND WILL ALWAYS BE AN AVID LOVER OF COASTAL CRUISING AND MARINA HOPPIN’. The trip that took my fancy was aboard
one of my club vessels (2015 Formula 270 PC) included in a fleet of powerboats available through Carefree Boat Club in Marina Del Rey. A very special experience and completely headache free! The real story here is how I found the club. I’m back in the market for the salty wind in my peppered hair and craving the boating lifestyle I have come to love. I ventured out early, off to Marina Del Rey, just a short cruise from Malibu, in search of a seaworthy vessel to satisfy my lifelong passion for the Big Blue Pacific. I was determined to locate and acquire my new toy - she would be in "Like New" condition, require little maintenance and have a reasonable price tag. As an experienced boater having owned 5 boats previously, I expected a lengthy search. I sipped a delicious coffee and devoured a hearty breakfast at Killer Cafe while looking through local boating publications and searching online with my iPad. There were many options and after
an hour or so, I narrowed it down to a few boats to check out. Next step, I ventured out on foot towards the slips to meet brokers. A young and boating savvy fellow named Bijan was walking in the same direction. After a friendly hello, I noticed his shirt with the logo and text "Carefree Boat Club." I had to ask, "How in the world would anyone boat truly CAREFREE?" Within a week, I was boating CAREFREE! The business concept, service and price fit my needs perfectly. A licensed Captain provided a “handson” refresher course (included with membership) in close quarters maneuvering, open ocean rules, navigation and boater safety. My family and I have easy, unlimited access to a variety of boats at less than half the cost of what was budgeted - all of this with no maintenance or hassles. I’ve always loved boating, whether at sea or inter-coastal waterways. It was just a month ago that I stumbled across Carefree, completely by accident. And I have to say that Bijan and Tona (owners of the Club) truly are pioneers in a completely new Southern California boating lifestyle. When we show up, the boat is clean and gassed up with all pre-departure safety inspections completed. Did I mention: No slip fees, repairs, insurance or maintenance costs? When we had young children, my wife and I hit the water as often as we could. I remember the cleanup and maintenance, after our outings, often interrupted the peaceful vibe of cruising back to the marina. Boating can be hard work. As the years went by and the children grew up, my wife and I continued to enjoy the sunset cruise but rarely enjoyed the labors of cleanup and expensive maintenance plus frequent repairs. Becoming faithful club members, we have at least 3 adventures planned going forward! Just last week, we decided that we’d like to explore Redondo Beach Marina. I made a call to Bijan and he reminded me that King Harbor is home to restaurants, live music, bars and many sea lions. It was such a fantastic experience that we plan to do it again next weekend with some friends from Calabasas. There’s only one company offering this boating alternative in Los Angeles. I hope my lucky and timely encounter saves you time and money. I prefer to enjoy boating without owning. Access 47 locations in North America, call Bijan or Tona to schedule a tour @ 844-LA-BOATS.

because the FDA has not approved cannabis oil in the US yet; in fact, they are excited about their work and future in this area of research and in obtaining FDA approval to bring the cannabinoid therapy to people in America and around the world. Rather than waiting idly, they are continuously working with researchers and labs in Israel and Canada to find new ways to produce better products that alleviate the battle against cancer, epilepsy, autism and beyond. Tracy and Josh Ryan’s daughter Sophie was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 8 1/2 months old. After using cannabis oil in combination with her chemo protocol, Sophie’s tumor shrunk by over 95%, a tumor which doctors said minimal shrinkage would be the most likely scenario. Doctors also said Sophie would have partial, if not complete blindness, with zero chance of saving her vision. Now, with what is believed to be near perfect vision by her ophthalmologist, at almost four years old, Sophie has become a medical miracle! She continues to defy many of the odds that doctors have placed against her, and leaves many of them in disbelief. After the Ryans witnessed the true medical benefits of cannabis oil first hand, Tracy took matters into her own hands and CannaKids was born. CannaKids is a California based cooperative that focuses on supplying medical cannabis oil to adults and children looking for holistic relief for serious health conditions, with a focus on pediatric cancer. Tracy has been working hard to find out what can help her daughter, as well as other children living with cancer. She believes that there are other ways to treat cancer outside of Western medicine that do not cause the same painful side effects that chemotherapy does, and that through these alternate methods it is possible to live better and fuller lives. When she first began her quest to help cancer children, finding the resources she needed was an overwhelming task. Even after hundreds of hours of research, she still had questions and confusion.
Because of her experience with Sophie, Tracy understands how daunting it is to have a child with cancer and has built a website called SavingSophie.org with the latest cancer research and medical articles to help support families on the same journey. The site also raises funds to help other families in need, and offers support to families looking at holistic treatment alternatives. Through the website, Tracy also hopes to alleviate stress through providing families with the necessary knowledge and tools to efficiently and effectively battle against the beast of a disease that is cancer. CannaKids is different from its competitors because Ph.D. scientists, and organic chemists who specialize in medical cannabinoid formulation lead their oil production process. CannaKids offers a variety of medicinal cannabis products, which include: flavored THC tinctures, flavored CBD tinctures, Honey Gold CBD oil, Honey Gold THC oil, and THCA tinctures. They have partnered with pediatric and adult oncology nurses who specialize in cannabinoid therapy for many disease types, and provide recommended treatment plans specifically tailored to a patient’s ailment and existing pharmaceutical regimen. A mutual friend introduced Tracy Ryan to her partner, Robert Davidson. Tracy and Robert immediately felt they were a perfect fit to work together since they both had the same common goals in their desires to help save children. They were both already heavily immersed in the research side of cannabis, and by aligning their efforts they knew that they would be that much stronger! On joining forces with Tracy and CannaKids, Davidson says, “I joined CannaKids due to its compelling stories and patient outcomes. It’s my goal to help CannaKids effectuate university research and to take a retrospective research approach on their past patient population. I think a meta-analysis of the data may yield some amazing insight into the medical cannabis world”. It is hard enough for suffering families to endure constant surgeries and chemotherapy—at least they should have access to help in dealing with the pain and extremely harsh side effects. Tracy says that they have come a long way in a very short time, and are working with a local lab to hopefully roll out even more new products within the next 30 days. The partnership between CannaKids.org and CURE Pharmaceutical Corp. was formed with the pure intension of promoting and providing an improved quality of life for children suffering with cancer and other chronic diseases like epilepsy, autism, PTSD, Crohn’s disease, fibromyalgia, ADD, ADHD, severe pain, anxiety and so much more. Tracy testifies that cannabis oils have tremendously helped patients with such diseases, and with research, she believes the results will only get better.

At the CURE Oxnard facility, everything, including every piece of equipment, is designed in-house by CURE personnel and built to FDA-approved standards. CURE is FDA registered and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliant. It manufactures pharmaceuticals, OTC drugs, dietary supplements, cosmetics and medical foods, all manufactured in a GMP Environment to meet food and drug federal regulations code Title 21. Cure does not currently manufacture any cannabis products in their facility due to federal regulations. Davidson adds, “Our goal is to facilitate as much research as possible on the potential health benefits of medical cannabis in some of these debilitating diseases”. The CURE Oxnard facility includes the Mixing Room, where a process called homogenous blending takes place before the product is laid out in strips. The product is then cut into strips of different size, weight, thickness, and potency depending on each patient’s required dosage, which necessitates extreme precision. Thus throughout the production process for every Pharmaceutical product, there are 23 check points to ensure no discrepancies in any of these requirements exist. These strips are then packaged into rolls of about 8,000 strips to a roll. Cure Pharmaceutical would like to see a similar facility designed for medical cannabis oral thin film technology. CannaKids’ emphasis on quality of life ensures that each of its patients are treated and cared for on an individual, personalized basis. These custom-made, medical strips may run from $3.50 to $6.00 each in order to provide the highest level of effectiveness per patient. Ryan states, “They taste amazing, more active ingredient is able to get into the bloodstream since it’s being absorbed through the mucosal lining in the mouth instead of processing through the liver, and patients have reported effectiveness that supersedes any products they have ever tried in the past. Chief executive officer Davidson has likewise explained that CURE is actively researching the perfect formulas for CannaKids. He states, “We are currently working with several research institutes overseas on several cannabis-related studies. Our goal is to expand our research efforts worldwide. There are so many different genetics of the cannabis plant that need to be studied. We are not sure which strains and variations of the full verse partial spectrum of the plant is more effective for each disease. Our major goal is to create a more focused approach to treatment”.
The practical benefits of using CURE strips as opposed to pills begins with their more compact packaging and easier usability. The amount of packaging required for thousands of pills to be transported to a third-world country, for example, not to mention the essential need for large amounts of clean water with which to take these supplements, makes pills relatively impractical. In contrast, supplements in strip form, as produced by CURE, solves all of these logistical problems. The rolls of strips are light and compact, easy to ship and to handle, with no water needed; in the strip form taking supplements would not be a problem where clean drinking water is hard to find. Chief Operations Officer Wayne Nasby of CURE explained that their Oxnard facility was actively started five and a half years ago. Initially they focused on building the facility and developing the technology; production of dietary supplements has taken place since 2 years ago. Though they currently operate on one 8-hour shift, CURE Oxnard has the capacity of running 3 shifts in the facility easily to produce many more products. According to Davidson, they want to produce dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals first, and prove the worth of their products before eventually producing products like CannaKids to help further improve quality of life. Tracy Ryan is actively involved with CURE and its scientists in CannaKids’ research, whose products, she emphasizes, “are not dietary supplements”. As Tracy explains, the FDA considers cannabis as schedule 1–highly toxic, addictive and very dangerous for human health— when there has never been a case of death. A rating of schedule 1 by the FDA also means that the product is not recognized as having any medicinal value; thus, research is not allowed in the US. If cannabis oils move to schedule 2, as Tracy and Robert hope, they can be researched and produced locally along with all other dietary and medicinal products. Tracy says that people around the world have demonstrated proof of the healing properties of cannabis oils through anecdotal testimonies that span every disease you can fathom. Seeing the success that her own daughter has had, on top of the hundreds of patients she and her team have treated, there is just no denying the power of this incredible plant. The federal government even has a patent on it as a neuroprotectant, and many hospitals are interested in cannabis products as well. Institutes in Israel are moreover conducting

research on cannabis and cancer. The studies have shown time and time again that cannabis actually does kill cancer. Research is continuing for the treatment of autism and epilepsy as well, and tests have shown that a child suffering from epilepsy can stop their seizures after a single dose of cannabis oil. Although Sophie has only had a few mild seizures in the last few months, they are under control simply through the adjustment of her cannabis doses, which is the only substance she uses—not epilepsy medicine. Currently, CannaKids is working in partnership with labs in Israel and in Texas to do genomic sequencing on saliva, blood and tumor tissue to understand a person’s individual makeup. This way, doses can be based on how patients metabolize different substances, and what their bodies will and will not respond to. With the help of labs in Israel, CannaKids will also be able to figure out what types of cannabinoids are needed for the different genetic mutations of specific cancers in the very near future. Scientists who have been researching this for many years are soon hoping to be able to address even greater programs to include patients in United States. Once the FDA approves production, Davidson says, CannaKids will be ahead of the curve as they will be ready to roll out production of its products as soon as possible. Davidson added that they are currently focusing on research and development and retrospective studies on CannaKids patient data. They are using their collective hospital connections to move the research and use of cannabis oil forward. Cannakids.org is a California cooperative legally licensed to sell cannabis products to patients who have medical marijuana cards, or a caregiver card that allows parents to administer cannabis oil to a child under the age of 18 in accordance with California law. According to scientific lab studies conducted in Israel, one strain of cannabis does not kill all disease. It may completely kill the disease in one cancer, but may not work the same way on a different type of cancer. More research needs to be done to understand what combinations of cannabinoids and terpenoids are required to kill the many different types of cancer. Thus, CannaKids never recommends that patients stop using Western medicine; cannabis is not a substitute for chemotherapy, but can be an enhancer to its efficacy, more effective when taken along with chemo to help it work better, more deeply, and reduce its negative side effects. Many hospitals in California are referring
patients to CannaKids, as cancer kids on cannabis oil products can, in many cases, begin to gain weight and have a better life right away. It is common to see positive results after just the first dose. CannaKids and CURE are working together with many researchers in Canada and Israel to develop standardized formulas and doses for individual patients. They intend to take production to pharmaceutical levels and soon bring it to the US. CannaKids currently has a staff of eight people who are working with doctors in research and production. Most patients have come to them by word of mouth in hospitals, and through other patients all throughout California. I am looking forward to working with Tracy and Robert to increase awareness of the positive values of this natural plant. After a lot of research, I now believe that Cannabis oils can assist in killing cancer. I feel privileged for the opportunity to help with the noble cause of bringing Quality of Life to young children and other patients suffering with terminal and chronic diseases. I am excited to be part of the team that cares! •••

Living Safely in
PARADISE BY
DAVID OLAN
! To me, living well means living life to the fullest and enjoying all it has to offer, particularly in our seaside gem, Malibu. Malibu is a place like no other. It gives residents and visitors opportunities to take advantage of its wonderful climate by being outdoors and enjoying the beautiful coast, abundant hills and generally healthy lifestyle. We all know that exercise, eating well, a positive attitude and breathing fresh air are the cornerstones to being healthy, and that, for the most part, good health leads to longevity. In Malibu we can surf, paddle, kayak, or swim in the big blue, bike, run or walk on the pristine beach, or trek the many trails in our lovely vicinity. There also are many studios where we can work out, as well as opportunities to play tennis and ride horses, to name just a few healthy available activities. Most Malibu residents embrace a healthy lifestyle, so finding someone with which to share an activity is rarely a problem. There are even numerous restaurants, such as The Farm or Sunlife, and markets like PC Greens or Vintage Grocers, which carry healthy and organic foods. But even paradise has potential for danger. The ocean you and I love can be dangerous in its unpredictability. Even seasoned waterman and woman can get into trouble when going out in unsafe conditions or while fatigued. Some of the worst accidents I have witnessed have been while mountain biking. As thrilling as tearing across the hills is,
taking the care to check your bike before venturing out, to know the trail, and to not exceed your capabilities can save you from many painful disasters. In most sports, checking conditions before setting out on your adventure, and being aware of your skill level are critical to safety. The buddy-system we all learned in elementary school decades ago still applies today. At the very least, always let others know where you will be and when you expect to be back. Driving Pacific Coast Highway – on bicycle, motorcycle, or car – is a Los Angeles wonder. Yet of course, because of the beauty of the drive and the design of PCH, it also could mean crazy drivers, too many drivers, distracted drivers, and those who just don’t care about common courtesy. We all are aware of the dangers of PCH and the hills. Whether you’re cycling or riding, drive defensively and safely. Be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem. No one can know the number of years they have yet to live. But to have the honor to live in this wonderful town is a blessing, and for me, it is a blessing regardless of how many years are to be mine. •••

75 Year Legacy of Jeep Goes Much Deeper than Sheet Metal
BY
MARCUS AMICK
Jeep Wagoneer Limited
THERE’S SOMETHING TO BE SAID ABOUT ANYTHING THAT HAS MANAGED TO STAY RELEVANT FOR 75 YEARS.
!
These days, when trends tend to change like the weather, that’s no easy feat. Sure, a number of companies have been fortunate enough to last a quarter of a century or longer. But very few have been as popular as Jeep has for more than seven decades, which has made it one of the most respected and recognized brands in the world. For most car nameplates, maintaining the kind of appeal that Jeep has had for 75 years is a dream at best. The key to Jeep’s success? Well, that probably depends on one’s perspective. Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand – FCA Global, attributes a lot of Jeep’s success to the ability to build on the brand’s legacy with models like the new compact Jeep Renegade. “Jeep vehicles have defined the authentic SUV and set the benchmark for off-road capability and freedom since they were first produced in 1941,” Manley said. “Today, Jeep SUVs continue to deliver 4x4 leadership, as well as fuel efficiency, world-class craftsmanship and premium on-road dynamics.” Chris Shaver, Vice President of Shaver Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Thousand Oaks, CA, echoed many of Manley’s sentiments when asked what he thinks drives the appeal of Jeeps. “Jeeps were synonymous with a ‘can do’ attitude after WW II, and after the war, Jeep symbolized the American spirit of freedom, adventure, and authenticity that was occurring in America,” said Shaver. “Today, Jeep offers a vehicle to meet almost anyone's needs and desires”.

Others would probably attribute some of Jeep’s success to the sense of American pride the nameplate evokes, rooted in earlier models like the Willys MB driven by U.S. soldiers like George Speaker in World War II. In fact, a recent study done by the consultancy agency, Brand Keys, ranks Jeep as one of America’s most patriotic brands for the second year in a row based on a poll of roughly 5,000 people surveyed. It’s certainly hard to dispute the influence that type of popularity can have for a nameplate. Then, I imagine some would also credit Jeep’s popularity to the nameplate’s ability to continue to push the envelope with concepts like the Jeep Trailcat, a 707-horsepower Wrangler, showcased this year at the annual Easter Jeep Safari held in Moab, Utah. Of course, others would probably point to the classical
Jeep Trailcat
appeal of Jeeps like the original Emily Weisman Wagoneer as one of the reasons for the nameplate’s longstanding iconic status. Jos Wilson, co-executive producer for the hit CBS show, “NCIS Los Angeles,” says it’s the legacy of freedom and adventure tied to Jeep that finally drove him to buy a Wrangler Unlimited this year. “Even with its low cost, it’s always been a dream car…a symbol of freedom, getting away and enjoying life,” says Wilson, also noting that the Jeep is one of the most fun vehicles he’s ever owned. As the proud owner of a Wrangler myself, I’d have to agree: there’s just something special about a Jeep as I’m sure a lot of others who own one of the SUVS would attest to, such as Emily Weisman and Michelle Brouerius who have shared their passion for the vehicles on Jeep.com as part of the 75th Anniversary “My Jeep Story” campaign. Whether it’s the pride you feel behind the wheel, the sense of freedom you get with the top down driving a Wrangler, or the element of adventure tied to the SUV, it’s really tough to pin the popularity of Jeep down to one specific thing. But one thing’s for certain: decades from now, there will be an entirely new generation celebrating the legacy of Jeep based on their own experiences, fueled by models like an all-new Wagoneer expected in 2019 and future collectibles like the 2016 Jeep Wrangler - 75th Anniversary Edition. •••

Cover the Steak with the sauce and serve with a glass of Estacion Porvenir Red wine from Mexico’s Guadalupe Valley. I enjoy cooking for friends and family mostly, and when I am in the mood for Steak, I go for the Fillet Mignon for its tenderness. With this sauce, I can appreciate the Steak texture and tenderness without being overwhelmed by flavors that are often too rich. Adding just the right wine brings all these flavors out in a unique way, and this Estacion Porvenir wine is one of my favorites, especially since it is priced well under $20 and has the blended varietals from the Guadalupe Valley that has made this region a hidden gem in the Baja. Attachment “is rooted in

Sunandaji M A L I B U C H R O N I C L E. C O M
53 SPIRITUAL
What is Vedanta? Is it a religion?
Vedanta is the ancient philosophy that enunciates the eternal principles of life and living. Which explains the meaning and purpose of your existence in the world. A knowledge that trains you to think for yourself. To analyze, investigate and realize the quintessence of life. Ultimately, it leads you to spiritual Enlightenment. Vedanta expounds the truth methodically, logically. It does not rely on the authority of a preceptor. Its truth is its authority. No master or messiah can claim it. No religion has a hold on it. It belongs to one and all. Bears no distinction of caste or creed, community or country. Its universal application appeals to all lovers of truth. Terrorism is getting a lot of attention at the moment. What are its causes and the best way to deal with it?
Human beings are gifted with an intellect. The capacity to reason and decide a course of action in life. Not realising the vital role the intellect plays, humans have ignored and neglected it. And people are left with a barren intellect. Consequently humanity is torn apart into divisions and demarcations. Has engendered bitterness and hatred, militancy and terrorism. The intellect has to be developed by oneself. My father and guru, Swami Parthasarathy, through years of deep study and research has prepared adequate literature and founded the Vedanta Academy, which runs continuous three-year residential and online courses wholly dedicated and designed to strengthen the intellect.
Relationship problems abound in the modern world. What is the cause and how can authenticity and connection be restored?
Your life is devoted to the study and propagation of Vedanta. What inspires you?
The virtue of selflessness, the power of truth, the grandeur of duty is a fountainhead of inspiration.
Problems in relationships arise because of the deadly trait of attachment. Attachment is opposed to love. Where one looks into one's personal interest rather than that of another. Attachment is rooted in self-centeredness, selfishness. Whereas love is based on selflessness and sacrifice. You would need a powerful intellect to control, govern and not let the mind slip into such attachment.
True and constant enjoyment lies in doing what ought to be done. Moment to moment, experience by experience. Having learned that lesson early has made life and all my time enjoyable.
What do you consider most important for today’s youth to be aware of?
What is the best advice you have received?
Thinking is generally considered a natural process like seeing, hearing or breathing. The youth must understand that to develop the faculty of thinking, reasoning, you need to devote as much time and effort to it as you would to learning any other art or skill. The process of thinking should start from an early age. They would need to follow the program developed by Swami Parthasarathy.
What do you do for enjoyment during your free time?
Serve, Love, Learn and realize your Self. Your three-day retreat in September has the ancient text Bhaja Govindam as its theme. Why this text?
Bhaja Govindam gives out basic instructions on life. It helps create a strong foundation for self-development irrespective of circumstance. Points out human beings’ delusion in pursuing the external world for peace and happiness. And urges them to seek the supreme Self within to reach the eternal Abode of bliss. •••

AUTISM BY
ADAM FISH
! AS A FATHER AND ADVOCATE OF A CHILD ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM, I take my professional career as a vessel to fight for the rights of children with special needs who are not as fortunate as my own daughter is. I started my advocacy within the first year of my daughter’s diagnosis. As a former boxing promoter, retired fighter, and artist, I had the resources of the media at my fingertips and I used it to spread encouragement to parents whose children had also been diagnosed with autism. I reach out to them to let them know that they are not alone, and that my daughter, her mother and I have experienced our own share of struggles since the diagnosis eleven years ago. The thing I love is being able to tell those parents that, as bad as it seems now, it will all be ok. Yes, you will go through hardship and stress, but it will get better. It was terrifying for me, and I know that such encouragement would have helped me tons, so I’m glad that I can do this for other families now. When my child was diagnosed, I became one of the pioneers of advocacy for inner city children who were being ignored and left without access to treatment services. Today I know that I made an impact on the inner city by increasing parental awareness of available services and how to obtain them. Now I know that children in need are not being left to fend for themselves without a life supported with proper therapy. I am always available for parents looking for advice or someone to talk to. A portion of my proceeds goes to various non-profits connected with bettering the lives of children on the Autism spectrum. •••

worked diligently to develop a plan to halt the destruction of this pristine natural environment and bring it back to its original state.”
! OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS, largely in part through social media, the CORRAL CANYON CAVE became known to many as the “Jim Morrison Cave”. This name led people to believe in the urban legend that Morrison of the 60’s Rock Band “The Doors” had visited this cave during his time in LA. Totally untrue, but as urban legends go, people flocked to the area to visit the cave. Unfortunately, some disrespectful visitors took to painting and vandalizing the cave with graffiti. This abuse also spread to other natural areas outside the cave. Partnering with California State Parks, The Corral Canyon Fire Safety Alliance worked diligently to develop a plan to halt the destruction of this pristine natural environment and bring it back to its original state. After months of coordination and planning, along with securing nearly $40,000 of government funding, State Parks sandblasted the infamous “Jim Morrison Cave” and the surrounding sandstone formations at the top of Corral Canyon Road. The next morning, under the supervision of a California State Parks archaeologist, seven Corral Canyon residents physically closed the entrance to the cave. Large rocks were wedged and mortared in place, making it impassable. While this is a durable closure, should conditions allow for it, the closure could be removed in the future. The large opening on the north side of the cave remains open in its natural state. However, it is off limits to anyone who attempts to scale the rock face to gain access. If it becomes necessary, this opening may be closed off as well. Since this area is a protected natural and cultural resource and California State Parks has spent so much money on the sandblasting and cave closure, they are very motivated to keep the area clear of graffiti and other vandalism. Additional patrols have been scheduled with Rangers posted “incognito” to cite violators. It is a misdemeanor to enter the cave and results in a fine of nearly $400. It is also a felony to spray-paint or otherwise deface any of the protected natural and cultural resources in the area. Violators shall be subject to ejection from the park, citation, and/or arrest, pursuant to Title 14, California Code of Regulations. This Order shall remain in effect until further notice. •••

One very true fact is; the markets around the world and the Prime Minister, David Cameron, were not anticipating this outcome. We all watched global markets tank, on what some called, the “D Day” for Britain. Have no fear, markets have recovered, and most still awakened the following day still breathing. As for David Cameron, he was succeeded by Home Secretary, Theresa May. David Cameron hailed his successor as “strong and competent”.

Theresa May is a conservative, and has already quoted “Brexit means Brexit.” She’s known as a tough negotiator, and is well aware of her challenges ahead in stopping the downward spiral Britain has faced since their vote of precedence. Now what does this actually mean for the U.S.? The truth is, the pound sterling had fallen an additional 4% since the beginning of 2016. The sterling has additionally weakened against the dollar since 2014. The obvious is that their economy clearly hasn’t been thriving. Some believe this might translate into Brits moving to the U.S. Clearly, wealthy investors have the option to move. The middle-class are not so fortunate. It does mean it is a fabulous time to go visit BIG BEN! Your dollar will buy you an amazing trip, if you’ve never visited. President Obama was equally as surprised to the “Brexit” vote. While he has stated that the relationship will continue, many U.S. economists are stating a new ally will be sought out. It’s inevitable that extreme change will always create its battles. Clearly the people of Britain decided they were up for the challenge. •••

RESTORING HABITAT, One Yard at a Time BY
ALAN POLLACK
IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SPRING DAY IN 1995. I had
!
recently retired, and was enjoying my volunteer work at Habitat for Humanity. On this particular day, I was relaxing on my backyard patio, gazing at the expanse of lawn and surrounding shrubbery, meticulously manicured except for an old, dead almond tree that had fallen over in a storm the previous winter and that I had not gotten around to clearing. I began to think: I’m helping to build homes for people, but what about homes for wildlife? If I were a bird or butterfly, would I even want to visit this yard, much less live here? Was there food here for birds and other critters? Except for some old walnut trees that provided nuts for squirrels, the answer was no. Was there water here for drinking and bathing? No. Was there shelter to protect wildlife from bad weather and predators? Very little. Was there a good environment for reproduction and the raising of offspring? Again, the answer was very little. On top of its wildlife incompatibility, I realized something else: our backyard was absolutely boring. I began to visualize what a habitat for wildlife would look like in my yard; in my vision, it would have separate niches not unlike “rooms” not visible until one would walk through the yard on paths of natural material leading from room to room. It would have dense foliage: tall trees, a variety of short shrubs, ground cover, rock piles and brush piles that provided shelter, and places for animals to raise their young. It would have plants that provided food in the form of seeds,
nuts, berries and nectar. And it would have a variety of water sources, both running and still. Using my vision, I drew up a plan and, over the next couple years, transformed the yard. By its completion most of the lawn had been removed, having little benefit for wildlife habitation and consuming an enormous amount of energy and resources); instead it had been replaced by all of the things in my vision. Additionally I had added a dry stream bed, not only aesthetically pleasing but providing sheltering rocks and collecting rainwater to solve the drainage problem. The fallen bug-ridden almond tree remained, providing food for woodpeckers, and other, larger dead trunks had been left on trees to provide nesting cavities. Flushed with a feeling of success, I then turned my attention to our front yard. The large patch of Algerian ivy and more lawn there I soon replaced with wildlife-attracting shrubs, trees, perennials, and vines. My wife’s beloved rose bushes remained, but no longer required pesticides because the birds that begun to flock to our garden ate the aphids. I also began
to use plants native to the region, as they required very little water once established and no food, in contrast to non-native ones. Native plants moreover posed a greater attraction to native wildlife. Our garden now looks very different than those of most of our neighbors. It no longer looks meticulous. Yet it requires much less maintenance and much less water and other resources than manicured and artificial yards. Most of the leaves that fall remain on the ground, where they serve as mulch and hide bugs for insecteating birds. Our old asphalt driveway has been replaced by the same material as the backyard garden paths—decomposed granite. And, best of all, our more natural garden has attracted 51 species of birds to date, butterflies, lizards, beneficial insects, the occasional possum and raccoon, in addition to the squirrels. As I wander through our garden now, I think that it is not only a habitat for wildlife, but that it, too, is a habitat for humanity; for what would my life be like without earth’s wild and beautiful creatures? •••
Before retiring from psychiatry in 1995, Pollock’s interest in woodworking led him to volunteer for Habitat For Humanity and then wildlife rescue/rehab groups. Wedding his two passions, gardening and wildlife, he eventually trained with the National Wildlife Federation to become a Wildlife Habitat Steward, and has been giving free consultation and landscape designs for the past 12 years. As a member of the Board of the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society since 2010, he leads the Audubon-at-Home Project and gives lectures to groups interested in restoring and preserving wildlife habitat.

Dogs with elderly
Dog protects kids
Studies have shown that dogs can bring countless physical and emotional benefits to human beings. The physical benefits of living with a dog are obvious: dogs keep us young by keeping us active. Walking, playing and interacting with dogs promotes stamina and endurance training, something our personal amotivation otherwise prevents us from doing. Living with dogs encourages us to get off of our butts and do something active. Having evolved with us over thousands of years, dogs are the only animals with which we share a tight interspecies bond. They so easily accompany us in picnicking, going out, exercising or visiting friends that they are considered an integral part of ‘family’. Dogs open countless doors for meeting new friends; dogs encourage you to run more, climb harder, swim longer, rewarding you with licks afterwards. Studies have shown that petting your dog relieves stress in both the dog and the human; cortisol levels moreover dramatically reduce simply by being close. Dogs are even used as emotional assistance animals for veterans and others dealing with PTSD. Most people who own dogs confess to conversing with them and even consider them their confidants. If you’re thinking of getting a dog, rescuing one is also an option. Rescue dogs come with life experience and wisdom. Three shelters exist just within a short drive of Malibu: West LA Animal Services Shelter (11361 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90064), Agoura Shelter (29525 Agoura Rd, Agoura Hills, CA 91301) and Ventura County Shelter (600 Aviation Dr., Camarillo, CA 93010). Each dog comes with full vaccinations, is spayed or neutered and ready to improve the quality of an owner’s life instantly. The best way to avoid backyard breeders or puppy mills is to find a dog at a shelter such as these—never on craigslist or over the internet.
Many shelters have a program called Seniors for Seniors that encourages senior citizens to adopt senior dogs (dogs over 6 or 7 years old). These adoptions are often offered at greatly reduced prices, encouraging seniors to get back into the swing of life— with a dog! The advantage of seniors adopting senior dogs includes getting them active without overburdening them with taking care of a high-energy, high-maintenance younger dog. As many older dogs are more settled into their lives, enjoying a stroll or a relaxed day on the couch, they pose a much better choice for elderly adoption. In addition to helping elderly people stay active, these dogs provide mental and emotional support, friendship and undying love for all of their days. •••

Dharamshala: A Spiritual City in the North of India
BY TINA JENNINGS, M.A. PHOTOGRAPHY BY TYLER JENNINGS
! Ribbons of amber light persist through the low-hanging deodar trees and onto the golden yellow wall of the Dalai Lama’s temple. Under its canopy, people pray to the statue of Buddha in a punctuated choreography of effortless moves, standing, bending, and bowing, in one forward wave. A Tibetan nun is wrapped in robes of deep burgundy; as she walks around the temple, prayer wheels catch the late light spinning and gleaming behind her. She stares out with a faint smile while her finger advances rhythmically from one prayer bead to the next. This is the pulse of Dharamshala, a city I’ve just returned from in the Dhauladhar Mountain Range in Northern India. Just west of Tibet in the foothills of the Himalayas, this small area serves as the official religious refuge of the Tibetan governmentin-exile and is home to the Dalai Lama himself. It also became my most treasured place on my recent trip to India. Earlier that morning, I’d seen a nun at the Tushita Meditation Center, situated just north of Dharamshala in the suburb of McLeod Ganj. The temple housed at least two hundred seekers, Eastern and Western alike. Palmo, the nun, sat at the center, her words carrying out over the crowd like music. When I closed my eyes, I saw the notes: long and leisured crescendos stretching out over the room describing the Buddhist path; short and syncopated, when she’d let it all go with a joke. I felt at peace here, cradled by the temple of bright colors, flowers, and Buddhist scripture painted on the walls.
During my stay, I was able to visit the studio where master artists create thangkas (colorful paintings). Their studio is housed in the Norbulingka Institute, a cultural center established in 1988 for the purpose of maintaining the artistic traditions of Tibet. Along with my family, we wandered the quiet gardens in the institute until we found a sign to the artist’s studio. Up a set of stone stairs, we came to a circular room. Inside, men sat against cushions, their fingers poised around a brush. Pressed gently to canvas, their hands moved in one small area, applying color deftly; the red arced line of a mandala; the white shin of the Buddha; the golden fleck at the top of a temple. With one day remaining in my short time there, my husband and I trekked to Triund, a five-mile steep ascent to the snowline of the Himalayas. Along the way, small rest stops popped up and we enjoyed cold drinks and snacks brought up by pack mules. Rhododendron trees with thick flowers the color of crimson lined the path on the right. Farther up, the foliage got denser, the blooms covering the trees in deep jackets of red as if to ward off the cooler temperatures. At the top, I sat and watched fog move through the snowy peaks and eagles taking advantage of the wind, spreading their wings to stay idle for a moment. Here I could feel the bigness of it all and the smallness of me. We walked to the end of the ridge at Triund, and saw an alternative path to get back. Remote from the oft-traveled Triund trail, this one was steep and filled with old shale steps that crumbled under our feet. We came across small homes, made entirely of stacked slate. Tibetan prayer flags swept across the falls like vines and the water felt cold and welcome after the long hike. After twelve days in India, at times thrilling, chaotic, and overwhelming, this quiet city in the hills was just the serenity I needed to complete my journey. ••• Tina Jennings, at the Norbulingka Institute

I am enjoying the journey to
I have no “regrets. I know what abuse is. I know how it feels and I know that no one deserves to feel like that.”
L.I.V.E. free… I LOVE myself, I INSIST on freedom, I am not anyone’s VICTIM, I am EMPOWERED to live my life the way I like it. My book “UNREPORTED” made No. I International Bestseller!! I am so excited and grateful and feel so blessed to have my work of love in my book “UNREPORTED” ranked No. 1 International Bestseller in the US, Canada, Australia and # 7 in UK. It took my whole life to learn about domestic abuse, and the last 6 years to really understand why I had to go through it and what my purpose would be in this world. I have no regrets. I know what abuse is. I know how it feels and I know that no one deserves to feel like that. I am sure and strong enough now that not only can I protect myself but I have built enough knowledge, empathy and skills to know that I am prepared to help others when I see someone suffering in an abusive situation. As my son so profoundly reminded me just a couple of days ago, no matter how much I want to help and no matter how much it hurts me to see someone putting up with abuse or living in it, I cannot help unless that someone wants help or is ready to be helped. So, my job right now is to increase awareness about the cancer that an abusive relationship can be. My book “UNREPORTED” brings awareness to this subject and lets you know that when you are ready to break the cycle, there is help and you can escape. Today I am living a life which proves there can be an amazing life after. We just need to have courage to go find it. Please learn to L.I.V.E. that free life.
