STEM CELL THERAPY A BREAKTHROUGH IN SCIENCE
Gloria Weischadle I Director of Marketing & Sales
STEM CELL REGENERATIVE THERAPY involves intravenous infusion of umbilical cord blood stem cells with or without additional injection into the injured area or joint. This simple procedure avoids the complicated and potentially dangerous nature of surgical procedures but can also be used in conjunction with surgery to significantly reduce inflammation, rejuvenate your body, and accelerate the healing process. The live stem cells replace the sick, damaged and old stem cells throughout the body and have the ability to regenerate. Stem Cell Therapy provides a Breakthrough in Regenerative Medicine. It is an alternative therapy that eases a variety of illnesses and takes only 20 minutes to administer. Stem cells are taken from a healthy newborn baby’s umbilical cord blood. Markers and donor identifications are removed and the stem cells are frozen at -192º. They are given to patients as an alternative therapy for various ailments and conditions. The doctors can use a site specific injection or an I.V. to infuse the stem cells into the bloodstream so the stem cells circulate throughout the body and create healthy cells that will regenerate over time. This non-surgical treatment is used for a multitude of ailments including:
• • • • • •
Body Rejuvenation & Skin Conditions, Rheumatoid Arthritis & Osteoarthritis Lung & Heart Diseases, Stroke Diabetes Type II, Hypertension Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Dementia Alcohol & Drug Addiction
• • • • •
ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) Autoimmune Disorders, Lyme, Lupus, MS Orthopedic Conditions, Athletic Injury Erectile Dysfunction, Peyronie’s Disease Post Operative Inflammation, Accelerates Healing, and other conditions.

Q: Do parties need attorneys if they hire you as a mediator? A: No. I can take a couple, no matter
their station in life, from start to finish with or without lawyers. I show them best case and worst case scenarios and hand craft a solution that meets the needs of both parties.
Q: How much does mediation cost? A: Some mediators charge a retainer and
Q: How did you get involved in divorce and family law mediation? A: At the age of five, I was a child of
divorce involved in a move-away from Los Angeles, California to Dallas, Texas. A court order forced me to stay longer than necessary and to miss school. It was at that early age that I began to realize that courts do not always have children’s best interests in mind.
Q: Has your practice of divorce and family law reinforced these beliefs? A: Yes. In fact, what I have discovered after 17 years as a family law attorney is that judges who are assigned to family law cases require no prior experience in family law. As a result, the judges are often learning as they go along.
Q: Are there biases in the divorce and family law court system that you have identified? A: Yes. Contested divorce and family lit-
igation often produces a winner based on which party has a better personality or is liked more by the judge. Yes, it is true that parenting skills matter, but if a parent is emotional on the witness stand or voic-
es strong opinions, that parent may be held in contempt by the court in favor of a quieter, more robotic and disinterested parent.
Q: How is divorce and family mediation different from litigation? A: First of all, the mediation experience
is private. In court litigation, you are airing your dirty laundry for all the world to see. Many celebrities and high profile individuals prefer mediation for the privacy and confidentiality intrinsic to the mediation process. Second, there is no judge. As the mediator, I hear both sides and assist the parties in reaching a sensible solution that is often more customized than what a judge would order given limited time constraints. You can schedule the mediation at your convenience and not at the whim of a court. Most importantly, mediation saves the parties a substantial amount of money. I find that many celebrities, high net worth and even middle class people going through divorces are getting hit with ridiculous attorney’s fees, forensic accountant’s fees and costs, not to mention the years of time litigation consumes.

an hourly rate, and others charge a flat fee. I typically customize my fees to the complexity of the dispute and the issues involved. I also provide an optional service to prepare all of the documentation required for the divorce to be entered. Overall, mediation costs considerably less than litigation. The biggest waste of fees in litigation is the time lawyers spend driving to and from court, waiting for a case to be called and showing up multiple times due to continuances because of a court’s busy schedule. As a result, very little “litigation” expense is actually spent working on resolving your case. Contrast that with mediation, where virtually every minute is spent on your case, taking it from start to finish, in many cases, in one day or a series of days with no long continuances. Mediation is customized to fit your schedule and your time parameters. You, as the client, have all the power and do not have your life dictated by the court.
Q: Do you only mediate divorce cases? A: No. While I am a Certified Family
Law Specialist, I am also a court-appointed civil mediator for Ventura Superior Court, so I am very well experienced in handling all types of civil litigation matters involving corporations, individuals and even cities.
Q: What is the best way to get in touch with you? A: The best way to reach me on short
notice is to text me or leave a voicemail on my cell number (818) 319-2339. More detailed information can be e-mailed to me at info@mbesq.com.

Doriana Richman
PROFESSIONAL STUNT/PERFORMANCE DRIVER LA MOTORSPORTS
Doriana Richman is a beautiful woman who has chosen a career that keeps her unrecognizable, working in the shadows. Her job is to make the vehicle she is driving look as great as she does and she does her job very well. Doriana is one of the entertainment industry’s top Automotive Advertising stunt drivers and her work can be seen in many of the commercials airing daily on television. Although often asked why her face is not seen on camera, Doriana says she is more than content being paid to do what she loves, driving fast cars. She laughs as she explains, “I get a paycheck for what I use to get tickets for.” She continues, “It is never about me. It is only about the car. When I am at work, I am not the star. The car I drive is the star.” Just like the actors she doubles, Doriana has to stay very trim and fit to maintain the strength necessary to withstand the Gforces and other physical demands on a stunt driver’s body, but she has a secret weapon. For 18 years Doriana has been under the tutelage of local personal trainer, Greg Sachs, at Diamond’s Malibu Gym. The results speak for themselves. When the gym is not an option she is out hiking with her dogs. The ability to fit into the wardrobe of the women she doubles is an important aspect of her job. To maintain her height to body weight ratio, she stays away from the five “evils”: soy, gluten, sugar, wheat and dairy. She says she eats a ton of hummus and olive oil. It’s obviously working for her. A passion for fast, performance machines is not something that came to Doriana late in life. She has been a car fanatic since infancy, fueled by her dad who used to race motorcycles in Italy. Doriana recalls, “He was balls to the wall crazy. In Italy, people could hear him driving from one town to the other.” Her dad instilled in Doriana his love for speed and when she moved to the United States from Canada, she immediately started to invest in American Muscle; Camaros, Firebirds and TransAms. Doriana feels very blessed that she does what she enjoys and is able to share it with her husband, Roger Richman, who is also in the same business. They’ve been married 20 years. The stunt work also seems to be a family business since her 18-year-old son,

Cooper, has also started to drive with his mom and dad. A couple of years behind is Paris. At fifteen years old, Paris is one of the top rated Dressage equestrians on the West Coast. Both Doriana and Roger are proud parents, taking their daughter to competitive horse shows; an activity Doriana did herself as a young woman in Canada. Doriana and her husband own L.A. Motorsports. The company has members that are world champions in Drifting, Motorcycle speedways, Pikes Peak Hill Climb, 2 wheel Auto skiing and World record ramp-to-ramp jumps. They have the finest drivers on the planet. Their team has done movies like The Place Beyond the Pines, The Dark Knight Rises, Men in Black 3, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Spectre, Terminator Genisys, Jurassic World, Mad Max: Fury Road, Furious 7, and Transformers: Age of Extinction. Doriana explains that when they are working, it is a controlled environment. The client expects that nothing goes wrong. They can never damage the car, which is often a multi-million dollar prototype. When they are filming, that car has to look perfect. She says that her only fear is that she or someone else might make a mistake and damage the car, but thankfully it has never happened to her. Doriana says, “The high speeds and driving in close proximity to other vehicles or camera cars is not a concern for me, because I’m surrounded by performers I trust and have worked with many times before.” Doriana’s favorite type of work is filming “car to car” with the modern, hi-tech camera cars. This involves traveling sometimes just inches away from a camera suspended in front of her. “It’s the precision and complete control that is demanded of you,” she says, “You really feel like you’ve accomplished something after capturing a particularly difficult shot.” Doubling talent is made easier by looking the part. “A large part of my closet is devoted to wigs,” Doriana explains. “Let me throw on a wig and I can look like just about anybody.” Doriana reiterates, “I feel amazingly proud and powerful when I work with High performance vehicles. My favorite commercial was creating the “Ride of Your Life” campaign where I got the chance to interact with real consumers and take them around racetracks at speed. I love what I do and I love my teammates even more.” •••

STOP BADMOUTHING YOUR MEMORY Learn To Collect, Connect and Recollect by HERMINE HILTON 'America's Memory Motivator'
HOW IS YOUR MEMORY? THAT'S A QUESTION I USUALLY
ASK OF THE AUDIENCE AS I SPRINT DOWN THE AISLE OF AN AUDITORIUM ON MY WAY TO THE STAGE. AND, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, THE CUMULATIVE ANSWER I GET IS NEGATIVE. IT'S THE SAME ANSWER I USUALLY GET WHEN PEOPLE I MEET, OR PEOPLE I TALK TO TELEPHONICALLY, LEARN THAT I'M AN AUTHOR AND MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER AND MY SUBJECT IS MEMORY. IT'S PAINFUL TO HEAR THAT A MAJORITY OF THE MASSES CAN'T WAIT TO TELL ME THEY HAVE A BAD ONE. ESPECIALLY WHEN I KNOW THAT IS NOT NECESSARILY SO.

Slobbovia), the subconscious takes it as gospel. It has no sense of humor.
Learn the Combination
You're Sending the Wrong Message Most people only THINK they have a memory problem. Do you? Are you one of the many who can't wait to badmouth your own memory? Well, that has got to stop because it's doing your memory a great disservice and sending a negative message to your subconscious, which, hearing it enough, begins to believe it. In the words of William Shakespeare, “There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.” And old 'Shaky Bill' was right on. Did you know that everything you do, say, or think gets routed to and planted in your subconscious? Well, it does. And it lies there dormant just waiting for the right moment to pop back up and bite you. And if you've continually badmouthed your memory, the message regurgitating from your subconscious usually arrives at the most inopportune moment: Like when you're going to introduce your wife to your boss (You may not only forget his name, you may even forget hers.); or, when you're a contestant on “Jeopardy” (and you're first with the buzzer and you know you know the answer, but can't come up with it, and not only do you see your moola drop, but you can't even remember what the question was). That's because you told yourself so many times your memory was paltry that your subconscious took it as a directive. Even if you thought you were only joking about it, (My memory has gone south to Lower
In most cases our memory safes would open appreciably if we only had the key and knew the combination. There lays the (what you think is a) problem. We think our memories work by osmosis. Well, they don't. The key is to display mandatory consciousness if you desire to securely remember something. It's called employing O.A., which stands for Original Awareness. But since most of us think our memory works by osmosis, we tend to ignore our consciousness, omitting any O.A., and then, if we tend to forget a thing or 2 …..or 3............ .......or....sometimes the whole 9 yards...,we blame a faulty memory. And that's just not fair! It shows no respect for that which is a wonderful instrument. In fact, you should think of your memory as an instrument. Liken it to a piano or guitar, which you'd enjoy learning to maneuver. The piano and guitar don't play themselves by osmosis. You have to learn how to make the music emerge. The key here is to first consciously focus on learning the notes and chords. Then you instill what you learned into your fingertips. Then, with that combination, you can make music happen. And it's the same with your mnemonic instrument. First you focus on the new notes you care to remember. Then you connect the new to the known with the fingertips of your knowledge. Once you do that, your instrument will play. Review it and you can play an encore. Simply, Collect, Connect and Recollect. That's the key and that's my mantra. It's always been my mantra in motivating audiences to learn how to hit the SAVE key and consciously get their memories working.
recall a fact, that we're on our way to dementia. If you can't remember where you put the keys, it's because you flipped them without focusing. Instead of teaching us to focus and connect the new to the known (the memory is a connecting machine - 'and that reminds me'), we were taught to repeat repeat repeat by rote. Look in any dictionary and you'll find that 'rote' is just mindless repetition, without thought, and if there is no mental involvement there is no learning. And there's the rub. We never learned how to learn.
So.....Starting now... 1. COLLECT by consciously focusing on that which you CARE to remember. (You don't have to collect everything. Not all things are that important.) 2. CONNECT the new info to info already in your mind. (Example: To remember my name Hermine {pronounced Her-meen} – think 'HER MEAN MEMORY'. 3. RECOLLECT by reviewing your connection.
Practice Makes Perfect (or at least it will give you a HEAD-start.)
Practice collecting and connecting in order to recollect. Whenever you see or hear something you'd like to remember, be it a name, a fact, a figure (whatever), FOCUS on what you're hearing, observe what you're seeing, and 'tout de suite' say to yourself, “What does that make me think of”? Then make the connection. Make it a habit. You'll be surprised at what your memory can do. There'll be no more badmouthing your memory. Instead, should we meet up and I ask you, “HOW IS YOUR MEMORY?”, you'll have a big smile on that good mouth, and your answer will be a resounding POSITIVE! Collect, Connect and Recollect and you'll always be able to................... PLAY IT AGAIN SAM!
If Only We'd Been Taught If we'd been taught how to work our memories in school, we wouldn't be badmouthing our memories today, and worrying, the minute we forget a name or can't

Vin Scully The Dodger True Blue
PHOTO: IMGUR.COM
by TOMMY HAWKINS
As the venerable Dodger sportscaster Vin Scully COMPLETES
THE 67TH AND FINAL YEAR OF HIS MOST STORIED AND ACCOMPLISHED CAREER, EVERYBODY AND HIS OR HER GRANDFATHER WANTS TO INTERVIEW HIM. THE REVERENCE THAT HE COMMANDS IS REMARKABLE. PERSONALLY, I HAVE RESISTED THE URGE TO ASK HIM TO GRANT ME A ‘SIT-DOWN’, ALTHOUGH I KNOW THAT HE WOULD. I’M SURE THAT HE IS WEARY OF THE BARRAGE OF QUESTIONS THAT ARE HEAPED ON HIM AT THIS POINT OF HIS LIFE, BUT SCULLY IS AN ULTIMATE TROOPER WHO RELIGIOUSLY UNDERSTANDS THAT BASEBALL IS NOT ON THE CLOCK; IT’S A NINE-INNING AFFAIR AND IF IT GOES INTO EXTRA INNINGS, SO BE IT. AN EXTENDED GAME JUST SETS THE STAGE FOR MORE OF HIS PINPOINT, VERBAL MAGIC.

TRIBUTE
For this article, I rely only on the 18 years of my life that was spent as Dodgers Vice President of Communications, in the presence of the master. My focus on ‘Vinny’ is how I came to know and experience him as a comrade and friend. What a privilege. Scully is a beacon that lights up any runway. He is well-read, witty, unassuming, personable, engaging, creative, verbal to the max, dedicated to his craft and sincerely appreciative of all of the honors and accolades that come his way. He is, and has been, the people’s choice having been voted by the fans the Dodgers AllTime Most Valuable Player. Vin’s Dodger history is a chapter out of Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Upon graduating from Fordham University in 1949, he miraculously secured a position in the Brooklyn Dodgers broadcaster’s booth next to the legendary Red Barber. Without a car, Vinny used public transportation to get to his job at Ebbet’s Field. Can you imagine young Vincent Edward Scully on a Brooklyn, New York trolley on the way to a Major League Baseball Hall of Fame career? In 1957, when the Dodgers decided to pack up and move to Los Angeles, Vin could only hope and pray that he would still have a job. Upon arrival in Los Angeles (a former Pacific Coast Minor League town) the local fans immediately took to his person-to-person, play-by-play call of the games. Scully was amazed at the thousands of transistor radios he saw pressed against the ears of fans attending the games. For over six decades we ‘bleeders of Dodger Blue’ have had a Pavlovian response to Vin’s call to arms: “It’s time for Dodger baseball.” We have eagerly awaited his description of the action and the personally crafted insights that accompany it. If, during a game, a squirrel scampers across the field and the stadium field
PHOTO: JON SOOHOO/DODGERS
-- “You’ve Gotta Have Heart.” He picks up on a theme played by Stadium’s organist Nancy Hefley as the Dodgers piled on insurance runs: “You’ve Got to Accentuate the Positive.” Vin has always felt that baseball is America’s common sports experience—“What is it,” he asks, “Is the first toy a parent puts into a baby crib?” Answer: “A small soft baseball.” “What is the most popular game played at a picnic or holiday outing?” Baseball! He continues, “We all haven’t kicked a football field
goal, slapped a hockey puck or dunked a basketball, but we’ve played catch, swung a bat or hit a baseball.”
“FOR DODGER FANDOM, hearing Scully’s
melodious voice and hanging on to his ‘world’s eye views’ has been a life-long treat: a treasured gift that we will take to our graves.”
attendants scramble to catch it, we want to hear Vin describe it. For Dodger fandom, hearing Scully’s melodious voice and hanging on to his ‘world’s eye views’ has been a life-long treat: a treasured gift that we will take to our graves. I can’t for the life of me understand how the Dodger organization and its television adversary can deprive so many “Blue Crew” faithful of Scully’s last years in the broadcast booth. All curse the mighty dollar. As for Vinny, he is the guy next door who knows what he’s talking about. The good humor man who always serves up our special ice cream treat, our favorite home cooked meal, a Norman Rockwell cover of the old Saturday Evening Post magazine. If Scully had been an artist, he would have been a Rembrandt, a Picasso, a Monet; had he been a poet, an Edgar Allen Poe, a Rudyard Kipling, or a T. S Elliot. We have grown accustomed to the way Vin weaves various aspects of music into his broadcasts: from Broadway Theater, he quotes from South Pacific to describe the emergence of Fernando Valenzuela and Fernando Mania, “Some enchanted evening you may see a stranger who becomes a life-long friend.” He quotes from Damn Yankees regaling a Dodger comeback win
Scully always comes to the ballpark well fortified to call the action that unfolds before him; he never imposes himself on the game. Listening to him you can always expect a smooth, unique, accurate and enlightening presentation. In 1989, then Dodger owner Peter O’Malley asked me to intercede on behalf of the organization to my artist friend LeRoy Neiman to see if he would be interested in capturing, in a commemorative painting, the Dodgers 100th Anniversary in the National League. Neiman’s reply was an enthusiastic yes. The deal was made and LeRoy produced a huge, boldly colorful wellreceived work of art, which by the way, still hangs at Dodger Stadium. Many elements of the team’s history are included in the painting but not Vin Scully. So I asked Neiman if in one of the subsequent serigraph reproductions of the original, he could paint in Scully. He graciously honored the request. At a black tie dinner at the Century Plaza Hotel, Vin was presented with the special inclusion; a masterpiece that only he possesses. You can’t say Dodgers without a mention of Vin Scully. Like Jackie Robinson, he is a vital chapter in the team’s voluminous history. When you say Vin Scully, you’ve said it all. •••

AMRITRAJ It was a wonderful surprise to get a call from Lisa Barker at Calabasas Country Club offering to introduce me to Anand Amritraj, another member at the club. I couldn’t believe I was going to meet my favorite athlete since I was a young girl in India. I can best describe my excitement by comparing it to my sons meeting Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant. Anand and I met over coffee and he graciously agreed to meet for an interview a few days later.
Everything about Anand speaks of an athlete with an amazing career who still loves his sport and is still very involved in it. Currently, Anand is the Captain of the Indian Davis Cup team and speaks with pride like a father about his four young team members. He recalls how his mother operated the Britannia Amritraj Tennis Academy in Madras, taking care of eight young players and training them to be the best. The academy, over a period of 20 years, produced many great players, some of whom became pros. H

s Anand talks about the young members in the present Indian team, he is surprised how sometimes they can be careless with the things they have worked hard for like the Davis Cup blazers and Olympic ties. Anand says he hates to lose things and remembers how very careful he was with his things, even when he was young. He admits if he sees a penny on the ground he will pick it up. (I actually do the same. Someone long ago told me if I respect the money it will respect me too.) Anand forgot an iPad on a trip during his security check at the airport and still feels badly about losing it. He laughs that his iPad cover was pink, how could he forget that?! Pink became his favorite color about 10 years ago. Before that, red used to be his color. He says, “It was more of an accident than anything else. Suddenly I found myself with a lot of pink shirts and I realized I like it.” He said his pink suit was the masterstroke. It was made for him by his designers at Whitcomb and Shaftesbury, a high-end Saville Row label from England. Owned by twin brothers from Madras, Whitcomb and Shaftesbury designs for clients that include the English Royal family, Richard Gere, Deepak Chopra and the Amritraj brothers. His friends told him that someone on Dancing with the Stars copied him and was seen wearing a pink suit. Dolce & Gabbana added a pink suit to their spring collection this year probably after seeing Anand wear it at Wimbledon last summer. Anand’s mother started Anand in tennis when he was eight, mostly to get him out of playing chess. He played chess from 5 to 7 years of age, until his mother decided he needed to play outside instead of sitting inside all day. She took him to the local Madras State Tennis Association. The coach there was an old-timer, a tough coach. “For the first one month I did not even hit a ball.” The coach made him swing the racket. Pretty soon he got the hang of it and became very good. Anand says that if he tried to teach his own son tennis the way he was taught, his son would quit, but Anand had no choice. That was what his mother expected. She would take him to the coach and drop him off. He was told to play and he played. He says in about a year he started to play well and his younger brother Vijay began playing also. By the time Anand was twelve years old, he was really good at tennis and started private lessons. Ramanathan Krishnan, also from Madras, played in the 1950s and 1960s and was Anand’s first Davis Cup Captain. Krishnan was the world’s number 3 player of his time. When Anand’s parents were considering the expense of daily private tennis lessons, the coach asked his mom what would she like her son to be? She said he was good in studies, maybe he can be a lawyer or a doctor. The coach replied, “Every year there are millions of kids who come out of school who become lawyers or doctors, but there is only one Ramanathan Krishnan. Why don’t you see how far he can go?” So his parents bit the bullet and paid up the money. Then they did the same for his brother Vijay. During the early days when Anand and Vijay were training, there was no such thing as a pro tennis player. They won local matches in Madras, then in Southern India and then won the Nationals in Delhi and Calcutta. The brothers were India’s number 1 and 2 tennis players. The whole country supported them, and they went to Wimbledon in the early 70s. Anand was a Wimbledon Doubles semi finalist twice and also won the Grand Champions Event at Wimbledon in 1989 and 2000. Anand won the US Open Masters Mixed Doubles title in 2003. H

It had been their grandfather’s dream to see one of his kids or grandkids play at Wimbledon. Amazingly, Anand and Vijay have played there more than 40 years each. Around 1973 the sport went pro, which meant that they could make money for playing. Before then players won awards or money for expenses, but could not make a living playing tennis. When tennis went pro, Wimbledon started offering money, and the prize money amount has grown tremendously. Anand and Vijay were able to make a career in tennis mostly because they had longevity. They didn’t get injured and they played well. Anand played for India in the Davis Cup for 20 years. He has been the Captain of the Indian Davis Cup team since 2013. Anand and Vijay were the only brother team to play singles and doubles for their country in the history of the Davis Cup. In 1974 they took the Indian Davis Cup team to the finals but could not play against South Africa because the Indian Government boycotted the match in protest against South Africa’s Apartheid policies. Anand says that has been one of his biggest regrets. In 1987 they took the team to the finals again but lost to Sweden. Anand is very proud to have taken the Indian Davis Cup team to the finals twice. Anand is proud that he and Vijay were able to play tennis on the ATP Tour from 1972 into the1990s. He says that they did so well also because they had each other. When I asked if they ever felt sibling rivalry, he replied, “Never.” He said there were enough other people to beat, so they always had each other’s back. Their younger brother Ashok also played tennis in the juniors, but later became a successful Hollywood movie producer. Anand fondly remembers a very happy childhood with his two brothers and parents. He is still very close to his brothers, although he is not as interested in movies as his brothers are. He has a house in Vegas and enjoys the classic shows – Beatles, Elton John, Barry Manilow and Billy Joel are his favorites. He still likes to play tennis 3-4 times a week and works out in the gym on alternate days. He listens to oldies music on his favorite radio station K-Earth 101. Anand acknowledges he is not very good with technology, so his mom bought him a new iPhone to bring him up to date. He believes depending too much on technology makes people stupid. He says he has a very good memory and does not depend on his phone to remember phone numbers. I was surprised that after calling me only a couple of times he remembered my phone number. His pet peeve is that kids nowadays depend so much on their phone and on GPS, that they don’t need to remember much of anything. As a student, Anand’s favorite subject was math. He finished his BA at 18 years of age and, by the time he was 20, finished his Masters in Economics. By the time Anand completed his studies, he knew he was very good in tennis, but was still not sure if he could make it a career because the game had not gone pro yet. He said that, if a career in tennis didn’t happen, he would have wanted to be a pilot. He doesn’t mind long flights and enjoys watching movies on the plane. Anand likes to take care of himself and is still in great shape compared to a lot of his friends. In 1978, Family Circle magazine in New York named him one of the seven sexiest players in tennis, and I can confidently say he is probably the only one of those seven who still can pull off the Tall, Dark and Handsome look with a lot of hair. He is most likely the fittest athlete of his time. Today, he looks great in his pink shirt, navy blue pants and hot sunglasses! It was an honor to meet and interview my childhood athlete idol for my magazine Malibu Chronicle! •••

What is Cryotherapy? Cryotherapy is the use of extremely low temperatures to address a variety of health issues from joint pain to muscle soreness, weight loss to skin problems, and overall wellness. Employing chambers that emit cold, dry air to the skin, cryotherapy works through a process of vasoconstriction and vasodilation. As the body is exposed to these cold temperatures and the peripheral tissues send blood to the core to protect the body’s internal temperature, the blood is cleansed of toxins and supplied with fresh oxygen, enzymes and nutrients. What are the benefits of Cryotherapy? This cold craze may seem like a relatively new discovery or even a trend, but it’s actually been in use for three decades in Europe and Japan, and some date its first use back to the seventeenth century. Currently garnering mainstream attention due to elite athletes’ and trainers’ discovery of its muscle-recovery properties, it’s not just for gym rats, professional sports players, and the ultra-active. Many are turning to cryotherapy for its positive effects on the visible signs of aging, mood and sleep disorders, and much more. What can cryotherapy do for you? • Decrease muscle recovery time • Enhance athletic performance • Support energy levels • Reduce inflammation • Improve circulation • Manage pain • Elevate mood • Improve sleep • Promote weight loss • Boost collagen production

Q: ARE THERE NEWER ALTERNATIVES TO LASIK IN 2016? A: That’s a very good question. There are newer alternatives to Lasik eye surgery. They include Implantable
Collamer Lens (ICL), Kamra Inlay, Superficial Lasik, PIE (Presbyopic Implant in Eye) and Topography guided Laser vision correction.
tenth of a millimeter.) In superficial Lasik or Super Lasik a special instrument called epikeratome fashions an ultra thin 50micron flap. Therefore, this procedure is better in thinner corneas, people who participate in contact sports or who have dry eyes. What is PIE? How is it better than Lasik? PIE is short for Presbyopic Implant in the Eye. It is best for people over 45-years old who want to free themselves from all glasses. In this age group, Lasik only delivers distance vision. A compromise is monovision, where one eye is for far and the other near vision. PIE allows each eye to see at all distances. Here is the best part. You will never develop cataracts once you have PIE. What is topography guided laser vision correction? When the shape of the cornea is deformed, Lasik cannot be performed. In such eyes the latest treatment method, which uses shape (topography) information to accurately deliver laser, is the key. I have had Radial Keratotomy. Can I have surgery to see better? Yes, there are a few options. Laser vision correction, PIE or a combination of the two may be required.
What is ICL? When can it be used? The most common indication for ICL is for people with high nearsightedness - those people with thick coke bottle eyeglasses. ICL is a soft lens similar to a contact lens. It is implanted between the colored part and the natural lens of the eye. This short painless procedure restores vision quickly. A person ends up seeing better than with glasses. It can also be performed when the cornea is too thin or abnormal for laser vision correction. You do not have to remove the lens. It sits inside your eye.
What is Kamra Inlay? Am I a candidate? Kamra Inlay is for people between 45 to 60 years of age, who want to avoid reading glasses. A small colored disc is placed inside the superficial cornea. It increases the depth of field. Hence a person can see near, middle and even retain their far vision. What is superficial Lasik? Lasik requires designing a flap in the cornea. The thickness of this flap varies from 100 to 200 microns. (A micron is a

What is the latest treatment method for Keratoconus? Cross-linking with riboflavin and Intacs are the newer, less invasive methods. As we toured the facility, we continued the discussion started last year as Brian reminded us that, “We provide better and smarter service, because that's what our customers demand and deserve!" Brian explained that Sun Air’s philosophy in looking after clients begins with safety. “Once again, we are proud to be the ONLY charter and management operation in California and one of five in the nation that holds all four highest safety ratings possible for charter businesses: Wyvern Wingman, ARG/US Platinum, ACSF (Air Charter Safety Foundation), and IS-BAO (International Standards for Business Aircraft Operations). Annually, the toughest auditors in the industry examine our operations and safety programs to verify that we are one of the safest operators in the industry, and we prove to them and our clients that safety is our number one priority.” As we walked through the expansive hangars, I noted a few new residents. “It has been a great year for us, not only in record fuel sales at our FBO, (voted “One of the Best FBOs in North America” by Aviation International News), but also in the new charter aircraft we are very proud to have in the fleet.” I was shown the brand new Bombardier Global 6000, the company flagship, and as Brian explained, “One of the most spectacular aircraft in the sky.” Other additions to their ultra-long range fleet include a Gulfstream V, offering spectacular value for international destinations, and, for coast-to-coast trips, their new Gulfstream IV, which was awaiting its passengers outside on the ramp. We watched as the clients drove right up to the aircraft and were in the air only minutes later. “We continue to operate a second GV and a Global 5000, which serve mostly intercontinental and large cabin requirements, as well as a Gulfstream GIII, Challenger 601, Hawker 800XP and Hawker 1000.” Brian added, “This year, we have more ways to help you get where you want and when you want.” Malibu Chronicle’s readers will be very interested in the new Altitude 410 Membership Program, a reference to flying in your own private aircraft at 41,000 feet. Brian explained, “Our goal was to create a card that acts as an extension of our customized products and services, and not a one-size-fits-all program. There shouldn’t be a pay to play cost to access what we do. We don’t charge for membership, there are no minimums; this is an invitation to become a part of our family. For both our aircraft management and charter clients, we tailor a program to their needs.” Traditional membership programs are based upon limited ways to participate and fly. Sun Air Jets has grown and yet remains committed to providing custom solutions. Explained Brian, “It’s very clear to us that the only way to provide the highest level of service is to be flexible, to adapt and, above all else, to listen to the client. So, we created the Altitude program to create a solution specifically designed to meet their needs.” Sun Air studies a member’s flight profile, individual preferences and expectations, and provides specific benefits in the form of monthly specials, discounts, invitations to events, and additional services tailored to their membership. The program creates an extension of the client’s day, a seamless transition from work to play, or home to an international office. Brian concluded, “We have successfully created a program where there are no limits, only benefits.” As we finished our tour of the facility, I noticed trucks loading filming equipment. Brian explained, "Our beautiful facility has become a popular backdrop for a number of commercials, music videos and even television shows, including ABC's The Bachelor. You could say Sun Air Jets has become something of a celebrity!" Sun Air recently launched a new website to include their new business activities, is also expanding their presence at Van Nuys Airport, and are further expanding their fleet of charter aircraft. With unmatched safety, new aircraft and a new membership program, it is a great time to fly with Sun Air Jets. •••

Remembering
Woofie by SUE HARDIE
As I look out my kitchen window
at the hillside covered in blossoming blue rosemary, yellow mustard, pink rockroses and lavender, I’m reminded of our dog Woofie. We met Woofie at the Agoura Animal Shelter when he was 10 months old. A Shepherd/Golden mix, he had affectionate soft eyes, a short dark muzzle, long caramel-colored coat and the light prance of a trotting pony. I loved the way his grand plume of a tail waved with every step. He looked as if he were floating. Woofie was now almost 14 years old and it was an early Saturday morning in spring. I was washing dishes and my 5-year old son Evan was playing nearby. Woofie was in the backyard with his longtime pal, Rocky, a Blue Merle/Rottweiler mix. Rocky had joined our family when we visited a friend living on a farm blessed with an abundance of dogs. After a day of frolicking, Rocky decided to jump into the back of our SUV with Woofie as we prepared to leave. There was no cajoling Rocky out of the car. He was Woofie’s new best forever friend. But this spring day was different. Woofie wanted to be alone. As soon as Evan opened the kitchen door, Woofie came in and settled on the dining room floor. Sensing some need or vulnerability, Evan pulled the pillows and cushions from the couch and placed them around our weakening friend, saying, “I’ll protect you.” We sat quietly on the floor occasionally stroking Woofie’s soft coat until he slowly raised himself and walked outside to his favorite napping spot in the morning sun on the lawn under a small evergreen. When we went outside a few minutes later, Woofie didn’t open his eyes or wag his tail in greeting, and he wasn’t breathing. The only movement was the gentle breeze through his long coat. After I explained that Woofie had died, Evan said he thought it would be a good idea to “put Woofie’s body in the meadow (in front of our house) to help the grass and trees grow.” As we placed Woofie on a blanket, Evan asked me to wait a minute while he looked for something. He returned with a yellow dandelion and placed it behind Woofie’s ear and said quietly to himself, “He’s so beautiful.” When we returned home with Woofie’s ashes, we agreed they should be spread on the hillside behind our house. That was 15 years ago and, as I admire the blossoming colors of hope and renewal that come with every faithful spring, I’m reminded that Woofie is helping them grow. •••

BREAKING NEW GROUND New 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Pushes to Crank Up the Cool Factor for Minivans
by MARCUS AMICK
In case you haven’t heard,
that automobile known as “the minivan” has undergone a major transformation. From design to performance, the family vehicle has taken on an entirely different form. And nowhere is that more prevalent than in the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. Sure, other vehicles like the new Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna have helped to drive the appeal of minivans in recent years. But the Pacifica is perhaps one of the hottest takes on the idea to date. The new Chrysler, which is replacing the Chrysler Town & Country, is in a word, groundbreaking, which was pretty apparent when the Pacifica made its initial debut at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in January. But to truly assess the new minivan, Chrysler KIDS’ FIVE allowed us to invite a few FAVORITE family members to tag FEATURES along for a test drive in California. So, I immedi• Built in Apps like “Are ately called my brother, We There Yet?” Oatis, who lives in • Seatback Touchscreens Toledo, Ohio. details put into the Pacifica, along with how spacious it is that surprised him most. “I was really impressed with the style, comfort and room,” he said. My sister-in-law, Tina, who drives the family’s Buick Enclave typically used for road trips, pretty much had the same sentiments. “It was a nice surprise,” said Tina. “It really exceeded my expectations for a minivan and a Chrysler because I wasn’t expecting the interior to be so nice. It made me feel like I could actually consider a minivan. It had a ton of clever conveniences. They really put a lot of thought into it.” In the driver’s seat (where I spent most of my time during our test run), the Pacifica was just as surprising. Available in a 3.6-liter V6 engine or a hybrid model, what impresses you most about the vehicle is how well it handles, even on some fairly twisty roads given that it’s a minivan. Chrysler credits that to a number of structural improvements such as a stiffer body and more high-tech suspension system compared to the Town & Country. The new Pacifica, which has a starting price of about $30,000, is also offered with a number of innovative features. There is a new and improved version of Chrysler’s popular Stow ‘n Go seats such as the Stow ‘n Vac integrated vacuum, hands-free rear liftgate, and the all-new Uconnect Theater rear seat entertainment system featuring 10-inch seatback touchscreens that comes preinstalled with a number of games for kids. So, it really should come as no surprise that my niece and nephew, Morgan and Mason, are still raving about the van, especially given that we visited the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and Disneyland during their California Pacifica drive experience. But let’s get to the big question: Is the Pacifica impressive enough to convince my brother and sister-inlaw to actually consider it as a potential next vehicle? Tina: I think I would. Oatis: I wouldn’t typically buy a minivan since we have only two kids. I look at a minivan buyer as someone with three or more kids. But if I had to buy one, I’d choose the Pacifica. Not exactly a yes or a no, right? That’s the thing, it’s really tough to gauge if the Pacifica would actually convince those family decisionmakers to trade in their SUVs and crossovers for a minivan unless they’re actually in the market for a new vehicle now. Still, for anyone willing to give the new Chrysler a chance, I’m betting they’ll be pleasantly surprised. •••

The Mental Zone In Sports by JEFF GERO, PH.D.
The psychology of enhancing sports ability is very simple. WHAT THOUGHTS ARE GETTING IN THE WAY OF YOUR SUCCESS AND WHAT THOUGHTS AND MENTAL TECHNIQUES WILL ACHIEVE YOUR DESIRED OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE? IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO HAVE A PICTURE IN YOUR MIND OF WHAT YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH. THE ATHLETE MUST SEE AND BELIEVE IN HIS OR HER ABILITY TO ACHIEVE A GOAL. PRIOR TO ROGER BANNISTER BREAKING THE 4-MINUTE MILE IN 1954, NO ONE BELIEVED IT COULD BE DONE. SHORTLY AFTER THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT, SEVERAL OTHER RUNNERS BROKE THE 4-MINUTE MILE DEMONSTRATING THAT ONCE THE MIND CAN ACCEPT SOMETHING, IT BECOMES MORE EASILY ACHIEVABLE.

“YOU HAVE to take charge of your mental game. It’s what sets you apart from other players.” - Hank Aaron
Recently, I was playing golf and coaching a woman named Sally whose ball landed in a sand trap. She became very anxious saying, "I’ll never get out of that sand trap." She put negative pictures in her mind and expected bad results. Instead, Sally could have repeated to herself, “I am relaxed, I am confident; it’s easy, fun and a challenge to hit out of a sand trap.” She could visualize the perfect golf shot before she hit the ball. Jack Nicklaus said, "I never hit a shot, even in practice without having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head.” Visualizing a shot is similar to programming a computer. You are putting a picture of a desired outcome into the mind/brain, which is a type of computer. Without negative interference, (I can’t hit out of this sand trap), the body will follow the program like all good computers do. Dr. Edmond Jacobson, a noted physiologist, demonstrated that visualization actually creates an electrical impulse and muscle memory in the muscles associated with what is visualized. Michael Jordan stated that before a game he mentally prepared himself 50 percent of the time and practiced 50 percent of the time. How many kids or amateur athletes are that committed to

their own personal excellence? If they learn and practice the secrets of mental training they will achieve extraordinary results. Unfortunately, many athletes do not have access to a sports enhancement coach or even know what to do. Most coaches don’t know about, or place importance on sports psychology. A few weeks ago I went to a High School basketball game of an athlete I am working with. I observed the coach yelling at the players from the bench. Later I asked Steve how he felt when the coach yelled. He said, "I felt bad, became tense and hesitant about my game." I wish this coach was aware of the extent of his negative impact on the players. The coach should help relax and build confidence in his players. I asked Steve how he felt when he scored a basket. He said, "Great." Then I asked him how he felt when he missed a basket. He said, “Terrible, like I let the team down." I told him that he needed to learn to feel great whether he scores or misses. He cannot allow anything to change his positive attitude. Bruce Jenner, the 1976 Olympic Decathlon record holder, said, "At the Olympic level, the physical capabilities of the athletes are all very close. There are very few physical errors. Athletic competition at the Olympic level is 80% mental challenge and 20% physical challenge.” Golfers also say that golf is 90% mental. There is an optimal mental state that enhances sports abilities. This mental awareness is often referred to as the zone. “I’m in the zone and can’t miss.” In this zone, the athlete has a mindset where he or she expects success, is confident, relaxed, focused and feels joy and ecstasy. The everyday world recedes and the athlete begins to be totally in the moment as though on automatic pilot. The athlete is completely focused, and concentration is so intense that actions are anticipated before they happen. In the zone there is a sense of possessing an extraordinary power and the athlete is completely immersed and in tune with the activity. The principal reasons for poor performance occur when the athlete tries too hard, worries about past mistakes, becomes overly concerned, loses confidence or becomes too excited. Professional golfer, Curtis Strange stated, "When I stopped worrying about winning and losing, I started to win.” The best performance occurs when the athlete is relaxed, natural and spontaneous. For most athletes, relaxation and meditation techniques will help them enter and stay in the zone. The more they practice, the easier it becomes to recall. We are just beginning to explore the limitless potential and results of using the mind to enhance sports ability. •••

ATTACHMENT VERSUS DETACHMENT by A. PARTHASARATHY
An ungoverned mind develops attachment to the physical body and its senses.
“
At the physical level the mind is drawn by the senses and their fascination for the sense objects. The eyes are enchanted by colour and form, the ears crave for sound, nose for smell, tongue for taste and skin for touch. The mind thus follows in the wake of the senses. And when the intellect is not developed sufficiently to govern the mind, the mind contracts various addictions like eating, drinking, drugs, sex, etc. Human beings become helpless victims of one or more of these sensual indulgences. To combat this attack you would need a powerful intellect to carefully regulate, moderate your sensual contacts. Ironically, such regulation and moderation would let you enjoy the sense objects without developing an attachment for them. Addictions only force you to hang on to them though you derive no enjoyment therefrom. They drive you to a state of neutralisation. A state when sense contact does not provide you with any further pleasure. A strong intellect would understand the absurdity of such indiscriminate indulgence. It would exercise caution, regulate your sensual contacts and keep them alive. Another problem with the mind’s attachment is its emotional bondage with virtually anything it contacts in life. One becomes attached to family, particularly spouses, children and even pets. Little realising that attachment causes frustration, suffering. Thus yielding to a variety of attachments the entire world is afflicted with distress and depression. In addition to the attachments the mind houses a host of emotions. It ranges from affection, love, passion, hate, greed, anger, jealousy, etc. Emotions cause suffering and sorrow if they have their own way without intellectual governance and guidance. They would not pose a problem unless one turns emotional. Likewise passions are all right until one becomes passionate. So too, sentiments are good as long as one is not sentimental. Your feelings and emotions therefore require your intellect’s constant surveillance for maintaining peace and happiness. •••

AND GREW UP IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY, WHICH, AT THAT TIME, WAS A THICKLY WOODED WILDERNESS TEEMING WITH LIFE. THE WOODS WERE MY REFUGE OFFERING UP FASCINATING BEAUTY IN ITS TINIEST DETAILS TO DISTRACT ME FROM MY HOME LIFE, A DARK TWISTED COMEDY BEYOND MY YOUNG MIND’S COMPREHENSION. IMPOSSIBLE DYSFUNCTION HAD ME CONSTANTLY LOOKING FOR AN ESCAPE. LUCKILY, I HAD THE WOODS AND A GIANT RECORD COLLECTION I COULD LOSE MYSELF IN. My earliest memories are of writing songs - it just made sense somehow. Woven into the fabric of my youth was laughter. The films of the time and humor made their way into our home and into my soul. I began having health challenges when I was young, never knowing which came first, the stress of home life or a faulty immune system. Sometimes the

things we do as children stick - and for me immersing myself in music, nature and laughter stuck. I would envision myself singing - moving people in the way I felt moved, putting all I had into it. It wasn't until later I realized I could make people laugh with my stories - the creative spark was lit. Years back, I lived in a tiny apartment in New York City. During that time, I devoured stand-up and music. I worked at a small comedy club for stage time and sang at a cafe with a Djembe player, figuring out the raps and songs I was writing. It was there in that little apartment that I would sleep with my keyboard next to me in bed always at the ready when inspiration would come - humming out a melody to a poem I’d written to soothe myself, exploring and honoring what I was hearing. Still having health issues, I would occasionally wind up in the hospital, but I'd still write, deriving some of my favorite work. During one hospital stay, I wrote my song “Laughter In The Distance,” which I later recorded on my album “within.” I also wrote comedy based on my mother’s visits to my bedside. I’ve learned that in my darkest hours my greatest strengths are being born, and, although I can't see it all at the time, a seed of pure creation has begun to grow. For me, it’s about finding the beauty in the pain, seeing how to express it, and then utilizing it. I have been to the light more than a few times now – yes, life has given me challenges, which has made me more ready and excited to take risks. I have been incredibly fortunate to have met a brave soul and partner in my life who, after so many years of ups and downs with my health, is still by my side. It’s something I find amazing, since most would run instead of watching a loved one suffer, especially when they would have to step into the role of caregiver. The unconditional fearless love I’ve witnessed in my husband James has further inspired me to be more mindful. I now focus on the gifts in life, on what’s right - trusting the process and just being. My new album “Queen Anne’s Lace” is a collection of songs that have a soothing quality. "Blowin Away My Mind" is a nod to nature, an offering to all the beauty that surrounds me. “Nowhere Now Here" is about a chaotic mind becoming present in sweet relief. "When Will We Fly Again" is my tribute to the late great Richard Pryor, for all the laughter he gave me - a teacher and healer in my life. Through it all, I’ve heard music and comedy. I’ve grabbed what I could and brought it to life with love and authenticity. I’m working everyday on presence and awareness – it’s my yoga practice for my mind. •••

Meet Mazy
I fell in love the moment I saw her.
I was first drawn to her eyes. The black outline around them looked like heavy eyeliner, thick and smudged. Her expression was sad, but curious. I have been adopting dogs for as long as I can remember. It was my mother who actually showed me the ins and outs of acquiring strays. Again and again, she would walk through the door, leash in hand, one story sadder and more hopeless than the last. Once each rescue was potty trained and fed, she would find them a new home. Much like my mother, I am a one-on-one rescuer. I'll typically take in one dog at a time and then spread the word that he or she needs a loving home. Sometimes this means I will foster for a "real" rescue organization, and other times it means I will adopt a dog from a shelter and care for him or her until I find the right forever home to take over. As with all rules, there are exceptions, and I have been known to foster more than one dog at a time. The most I have fostered at once is seven, a mom and her six newborn puppies, through the organization Dogs Without Borders, based in Ojai. The farthest away I have driven a dog to a new home is San Francisco, an adorable black lab mix that a friend fell in love with. The farthest I have ever flown a dog to a new home was aboard a United flight to Portland, Oregon. We rescued our family's current forever dog from an animal shelter in Long Beach. Molly will be 16 years old this summer. Never has a companion been more loyal or more loved. Having lived through four moves (two across country) and three cats, she still gazes at us with her adoring doe-eyes and we melt. Which brings me to our latest addition, the sweet, gentle, half-Pyrenees, dark eyed, 4-month-old beauty we call Mazy. Late one night, while perusing rescue sites, I saw a puppy's picture and my heart sank. How could THIS puppy be sleeping outside and not have a loving home? I immediately emailed the rescue, Lost and Found Dogs of Antelope Valley, and the next morning had an appointment with Jeanette, the organization’s founder, to visit an adorable litter of puppies being fostered in East Lancaster. A few hundred miles, a dozen texts, three phones calls and a stop at Pet Smart later, Mazy was on the way to her new forever home: my house, to meet her new sister Molly and be loved as much as any dog could be loved. To my knowledge, Mazy had never lived indoors, was not car savvy, house broken or leash trained. I work with her everyday to help her gain confidence, offering her a warm, safe crate, motivationbased training (treats) and a whole lot of love. She has returned my adoration with acceptance, obedience and kisses. I couldn't have asked for more. •••

The Sports Scene at OUR LADY OF MALIBU SCHOOL
by MICHAEL SMITH, PRINCIPAL

uring our accreditation process about a year ago, Our Lady of Malibu School added a fifth schoolwide learning requirement. We want our students to be ambassadors of wellness and fitness. We are accomplishing this by providing athletic opportunities for our students through participation in the Valley Catholic Schools League where OLM students can compete against students from other Catholic Schools in football, volleyball, basketball and track and field. Each league in the Catholic Youth Organization, CYO, is comprised of five schools. Despite being a small school, OLM students compete against much larger schools that have three times more students than we have. These larger schools have a much bigger pool of students from which to select their athletes. I am proud to say that our OLM students are well-prepared, talented athletes, and have performed very well, particularly in volleyball, and extremely well in track and field. All the leagues participate in the CYO championship competitions. At these games, OLM students compete against fifty other schools – a formidable challenge. Their coach, Athletic Director John Meyers, works hard helping our talented students achieve their best in their sport(s). OLM students play on both the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. They may begin competing in track and field events when they are in the third grade.

Participation in the after school sports program is optional at OLM, and is in addition to the regular required Physical Education class. To compete and be successful in sports requires a significant commitment by the students and their families to the after school sports programs. We are fortunate to have many sports facilities at OLM and nearby. We play flag football at Bluff’s Park and have track and field on the OLM campus or at Malibu High School. All the competitions are held on the weekends at different Catholic high schools, so the students get to experience a little of what it’s like to be on a high school campus. We have done extremely well at Valley Catholic Schools League games, and even at CYO competitions. Our novice track team has won for the last two years at the Valley Catholic Schools League. This year at the CYO championships, three OLM teams won third place, and two of our teams placed second. Often, our OLM students will compete in multiple events. As we gain more successes, we are attracting more and more attention and participation school-wide. About a third of our school population, girls and boys alike, starting with third grade and upwards, participate on one or more athletic teams. Volleyball and track and field appeal to many of our girls, while flag football and basketball are the more popular sports with our boys. We have a lot of parent support, so our programs run smoothly, and several parents help coach our teams. I am proud of our student ambassadors of wellness and fitness at Our Lady of Malibu School. •••

HIIT IT!
Want to burn more fat in less time? High Intensity Training is your ticket to success! by DEBI CARLIN BOYLE This October will mark my 20th year as a ‘SPIN’ instructor, and my 19th year as a personal trainer. I have never stopped teaching during this time, but I have changed the way I teach based on what I discovered is best for our bodies. As a fitness instructor and a personal trainer, I am constantly learning and evolving, both with my workouts and for the classes I teach. One of the most important facts that I have learned over the years is: Fitness is intensity dependent, NOT time dependent. Meaning, it’s the quality and intensity of your workouts that get you the best results. Most people think that you need to work out for at least an hour to see results. Not true! The length of time you work out has far less to do with your results. This fact is a very tough one to get across to my clients and students. In an environment where classes are typically 1 hour and the belief is that the longer and harder you work out the better the results, I find myself spending a lot of time convincing others this is simply not true. In the last 4 years, I have adopted the HIIT method of training for optimal results from a cardio workout. “High-intensity interval training (HIIT), is a form of interval training, an exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less-intense recovery periods. HIIT is a form of cardiovascular exercise.” Several studies have shown that a HIIT session is significantly more time effective for losing fat than traditional “low-intensity steady state” cardio. If your goal is to burn as much fat in as little time as possible, then HIIT is the way to go. Research has shown that HIIT: * Increases your metabolic rate for up to 24 hours. * Improves your body’s ability to better absorb and use the food you eat rather than store it as fat. * Increases your muscles’ ability to burn fat for energy. * Elevates growth hormone levels, which aides in fat loss. * Decreases post-exercise appetite, which helps prevent over-eating. You only need a couple of hours per week to increase fat loss, with each session lasting only 20 to 30 minutes. I want to make it very clear that exercise is not one size fits all. Not all of my clients have the same fitness goals. There are many factors that come into play for individuals that determine what is best for them, such as age and past injuries, to name a few. It is my job to weed through each variable and help my client reach their maximum genetic potential; this is why I call my business Fit By Design. But I consistently find the HIIT training works with positive results for everyone that uses it, as long as their commitment to diet and strength training exercise is also intact. Check out my website for HIIT routines and send me a comment on how it’s working for you. I think you will be very pleased with your results!

Born and raised in Lake George, New York, in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, I felt I was an artist ever since I was a child. In 1984, I began studying painting in Los Angeles with Martin Lubner. I’ve explored many avenues during my career, and have received a few awards in juried shows along the way. Since 2008, I’ve focused on animal portraiture. I’m a great lover of animals and love capturing the essence of the pet. I work in oil and enjoy the process from start to finish. When working with a client, I prefer to meet the pet personally and take photos myself. I talk with the owner about what they are looking for and we agree on a choice before I begin working. An oil portrait takes 30 to 90 days to complete. Visit jbpetportraits.com for an indepth understanding of who I am, the commission process and to see my work.

Carefree Boat Club MY BOATING LIFESTYLE, WITH NO HEADACHES! by David Stone, Malibu Resident and Carefree Boat Club Member
I’ve been boating since the 1980s and will always be an avid lover of coastal cruising and marina hoppin’. The trip that took my fancy was aboard one of my club vessels (2015 Formula 270 PC) included in a fleet of powerboats available through Carefree Boat Club in Marina Del Rey. A very special experience and completely headache free! The real story here is how I found the club. I’m back in the market for the salty wind in my peppered hair and craving the boating lifestyle I have come to love. I ventured out early, off to Marina Del Rey, just a short cruise from Malibu, in search of a seaworthy vessel to satisfy my lifelong passion for the Big Blue Pacific. I was determined to locate and acquire my new toy - she would be in “Like New” condition, require little maintenance and have a reasonable price tag. As an experienced boater having owned 5 boats previously, I expected a lengthy search. I sipped a delicious coffee and devoured a hearty breakfast at Killer Cafe while looking through local boating publications and searching online with my iPad. There were many options and after an hour or so, I narrowed it down
to a few boats to check out. Next step, I ventured out on foot towards the slips to meet brokers. A young and boating savvy fellow named Bijan was walking in the same direction. After a friendly hello, I noticed his shirt with the logo and text “Carefree Boat Club.” I had to ask, “How in the world would any one boat be truly CAREFREE?” Within a week, I was boating CAREFREE! The business concept, service and price fit my needs perfectly. A licensed Captain provided a “hands-on” refresher course (included with membership) in close quarters maneuvering, open ocean rules, navigation and boater safety. My family and I have easy, unlimited access to a variety of boats at less than half the cost of what was budgeted - all of this with no maintenance or hassles. I’ve always loved boating, whether at sea or on inter-coastal waterways. It was just a month ago that I stumbled across Carefree, completely by accident. And I have to say that Bijan and Tona (owners of the Club) truly are pioneers in a completely new Southern California boating lifestyle. When we show up, the boat is clean and gassed up with all pre-departure safety inspections completed. Did I mention: No slip fees, repairs, insurance or

maintenance costs? When we had young children, my wife and I hit the water as often as we could. I remember the cleanup and maintenance, after our outings, often interrupted the peaceful vibe of cruising back to the marina. Boating can be hard work. As the years went by and the children grew up, my wife and I continued to enjoy the sunset cruise but rarely enjoyed the labors of cleanup and expensive maintenance plus frequent repairs. Becoming faithful club members, we have at least 3 adventures planned going forward! Just last week, we decided that we’d like to explore Redondo Beach Marina. I made a call to Bijan and he reminded me that King Harbor is home to restaurants, live music, bars and many sea lions. It was such a fantastic experience that we plan to do it again next weekend with some friends from Calabasas. There’s only one company offering this boating alternative in Los Angeles. I hope my lucky and timely encounter saves you time and money. I prefer to enjoy boating without owning. Access 47 locations in North America, call Bijan or Tona to schedule a tour @ 844-LA-BOATS.

• Stay on the trail. Staying
on the trail limits impact on natural areas and you have less chance of getting lost. Also, by staying on the trail you reduce the chance of interacting with dangers such as snakes, ticks and poison oak. • Know your limits. Be aware of your hiking fitness level. If you are aware of your ability, you’ll know when it’s time to turn around or how many hours you can endure. • First aid. Consider taking along a few basics while hiking. Pain relievers, Ace bandages to wrap sprains or control bleeding, and moleskin for blisters will provide comfort when needed. This can make the hike out of the mountains much more bearable. • Fatigue/Dehydration. The common signs and symptoms of dehydration include fatigue, cramping and nausea. Drink electrolyte fluids, move to a shaded area, and rest to treat dehydration. If it becomes worse and you are not mobile, call for help. Remember, you need approximately 3 quarts of water a day while hiking and more in extreme conditions. Educate yourself about common trail dangers and how you can prevent and treat these when needed.
Wear long sleeve shirts, pants and DEET (insect repellent) on your skin to prevent tick bites. After hiking, check your entire body. If you have a tick bite, grasp the head gently with tweezers to remove. Use an antibacterial cleaner and apply an antibiotic ointment. For persistent irritation or infection, see a medical professional. • Poison oak. To prevent exposure to poison oak, stay on the trail and wear long sleeves and pants. Also, there are special ointments you can apply before a hike to minimize your exposure. If exposed, wash with soap and water and preferably with a special soap designed to remove the oils of the plant. Also, don't forget to wash all exposed clothing. • Snakes. Because snakes typically bite in defense, the best prevention is to not bother, pester or provoke them, and stay on the trail. • Ticks.
If bitten by a snake, first call 911. Keep as calm as possible and immobilize the affected extremity. Remove any jewelry or tight clothing, as the area will swell. Monitor basic vital signs such as breathing, pulse and skin changes. And remember, any venomous snakebite requires anti venom. This requires a patient to be quickly transported to the proper facility for treatment. • Mountain lions. They are elusive and quiet, and rarely attack people. If you do encounter a mountain lion, stay calm, make yourself look big and give it a chance to escape. If it doesn't leave, back away slowly and do not run. Throw available objects at it and, again, look large. If attacked, fight with any weapons possible.
• Share the fun. While hiking is often enjoyed as a solo activity, share the experience – hike with a friend or group.
Finally, let’s look at the basic essentials of hiking. These simple rules will make for a great experience by giving you the ability to help yourself if problems arise.

MODERATE
• Map. The most reliable is in the paper form! • Sun Protection. At least 30 SPF sunscreen,
hat and sunglasses. • Extra Clothing. Bring extra lightweight layers. The weather often changes! • Illumination. If you become stranded or lost on a trail, a flashlight will be invaluable. • Basic first aid kit. This should include an Ace bandage, moleskin and pain relievers. • Nutrition. Pack high calorie snacks such as energy bars or nuts. • Hydration. Bring more water than you think you’ll need. Hydration backpacks are lightweight and efficient. • Emergency shelter. These are lightweight, versatile and very useful in a downpour. • Insect repellents. Being eaten alive can ruin a good hike! • Communication. Always bring a fully charged cell phone. Also, let others know of your intended route and time frames.

Mediation teaches you how to resolve disputes peacefully, without anger and violence. Yes, I am a mediator. I finally graduated with cap, gown and master’s hood. I walked the walk with the class of 2016 at Pepperdine Law School, Straus Institute onto the stage overlooking the beautiful ocean view to receive my diploma certifying that I am a Master of Dispute Resolution. Some days in the last two years were difficult juggling classes, exams and magazine deadlines. I want to thank Prof. Tim Pownall who kept me going when I wanted to quit, and Joanna and Randy at the Straus office who answered all my questions and stayed with me when I was panicking. I also want to thank my sons Kunal and Rahul for always supporting me. I can’t believe my mom who came here for my graduation, even when she was not well. It was nice to see her so happy to see me graduate. I feel blessed and loved by all my family, friends and FB friends for their good wishes and support. I know I said a couple of months ago that I graduated when I finished all my class work and was done with exams and homework. For all practical purposes I feel I graduated then, but I still had to finish my internship, or as Pepperdine calls it, Externship. Externships are really good for real life experience and the preparation I needed to work as a mediator and arbitrator. Mediation Clinic was another very important program offered at Pepperdine where we use our skill in actual courts to resolve real life disputes through mediation. I am proud to say I had a 90% success rate during my time in mediation with these court cases. It is a great feeling when I am able to help two parties resolve a dispute and salvage relationships. I was always a peacemaker, but now I am a trained mediator with the best skill set possible. Pepperdine’s M.D.R. program has been ranked No.1 in the nation for the last 13 years. I am looking forward to using all I have learned at Pepperdine to make this world, or at least our community, a much more peaceful and tolerant place to live and grow. I am currently working at Our Lady of Malibu School. I am excited about my work there because I feel great that I am able to teach the students from a young age how to use words instead of anger and violence to
resolve conflicts. The children are learning to listen and put themselves in others’ shoes so that they realize hurting others also makes the hurt and pain grow in themselves. As one of the students after our mediation sessions said, “As I am learning to have better relationships, I am realizing that it is also helping me in my academics.” I feel so blessed to be part of this transformation. As happy as I am to be done with two years of hard work at Pepperdine while continuing to work on Malibu Chronicle magazine, I’m happy to have become more peaceful and happy myself. I use the mediation skills in my own life as much as possible. Even though conflicts are a natural part of life, I hope I will be able to resolve most disputes easily and peacefully while maintaining the respect for myself and for my opponents. I feel more confident in navigating my way through life because I have learned better skills for negotiation and mediation - making it difficult for people who want to fight. I am not a fighter; I am a mediator and peacemaker! However, I like to box for fun, endurance, perseverance, and for the sense of confidence and accomplishment. Finishing my Masters classes and graduating felt almost the same as I feel after my boxing sessions - spent and done, but proud and fulfilled! But, I am never done. I am a girl on the go. STAY TUNED FOR A NEW AND BIG ANNOUNCEMENT COMING ON JULY 7TH!! I will announce it on www.malibuchronicle.com and my blog at www.veeramahajansstory.blogspot.com or visit www.veeramahajan.com

TRIBUTE
The Legend of
Kobe Bryant by TOMMY HAWKINS
It was the closing night of a twenty-year run, a Lakers super-nova facing his setting sun. The storied Kobe Bryant, devotee of Naismith’s game, prepared to leave the arena that had brought him fortune and fame. A life-long zealous warrior who always answered the call, a self proclaimed Black Mamba out to conquer all. He waved the Lakers banner high above his head and rather give in to injury or pain Kobe would rather be dead. Fans jammed the Staples Center and millions watched on TV, traffic backed up in downtown LA for as far as the eye could see. Worshippers and detractors viewed recaps and shouted his name Kobe Kobe Kobe turn us on in your final game. Showered with adoration Bryant fought for self-control; no one in this star-struck town could predict what would unfold. Magic, Shack, Fish, Fox, Ory and big game James all huddled around the icon recalling his championship games. For two decades he ‘lit them up’ scoring 81 points in one outing amid much controversy and constant yelling and shouting. In a setting fit for Hollywood or even Tin Pan Alley they eagerly awaited the closing act of Kobe’s grand finale. A thousand memories drenched him on this his ‘Swan Song’ day; how would he be remembered as he proudly walked away? PHOTO: ATIBA JEFFERSON
In a shameful losing season Kobe waved goodbye to the league playing when he was able ignoring his age, the pain, and fatigue. But blocking out the fanfare the Mamba took the floor piling up points as the game progressed while the faithful screamed for more.

So call it divine intervention or karma well-blended with skill, but Kobe left with a victory and 60 points in the till. Yet when the loyals gather as summer turns to fall, there will be those who always insist that Kobe hogged the ball. •••
