FROM THE PUBLISHER/ E D I TO R . I N .C H I E F

While our generation appears to be preoccupied with pursuing an active lifestyle, we in Southern California have taken the notion to an all-consuming level. We can easily execute this ideal since our near-perfect climate year-round affords us that opportunity. Southlanders of all ages seem to love the outdoors and there is an abundance of activities to keep them pleased and occupied, especially in the fall season. We may not enjoy the cascading of vibrant autumn leaves like many of our East Coast friends do, but we get to relish in an extension of our summertime, which has its own allure. At a time when many of our neighboring States are winding down from the summer bustle and heading indoors, our bounty of seasonal events entice us back outside. We have dedicated our September/October issue to events and entertainment for the simple reason that autumn is when most of us in SoCal rev up for our busiest time of year. With fall carnivals, county fairs, jazz festivals, the Breeder’s Cup and so many more celebrations of the harvest season, we want readers to be aware of what our region has to offer. is issue also offers a look at our culture-rich mid-cities area in Los Angeles, the historic Getty Villa in Malibu as well as kid-specific events from Santa Barbara to San Diego. We also suggest where to head out for a girls’ weekend getaway (should some need to recover from the hectic back-to-school hustle). We trust you’ll find this issue insightful and encourage you to get out and bask in our uninterrupted sunshine while you revel in our crop of fall festivities.

Warm regards,

MONIQUE REIDY

Getty Villa outer peristyle from entrance, circa 1974. 4. Getty Villa outer peristyle from angle, circa 1974.

when the villa was being constructed, he was involved on many levels from weighing in on the selection of, and color of tiles to the pouring of cement. “Design details were inspired by antiquities such as bronze lanterns carried along the streets of Pompei in ancient times. The gardens include herbs and shrubs inspired by those grown in ancient Roman homes for food and ceremony,” says Kenneth Lapatin, the antiquities curator at the J. Paul Getty Museum. The Getty Villa opened in 1974. Lapatin describes the magic of the villa, “It’s like time travel; you feel like you’re in ancient Rome.” The galleries have works from 6,500 BC to AD 400. There are more than 1,200 antiquities in 23 galleries at the villa. Specially designed spaces house luxury vessels, Cycladic figures, coins, jewelry, gems and more. The galleries were first arranged by themes, like Gods and Goddesses, Athletes and Competitors, the Trojan War and others. There are monumental sculptures, as well as artifacts of every day life. The entire collection has 44,000 antiquities. “People are struck by the quality of the vases and ancient jewelry. Stuff made thousands of years ago has survived,” says Lapatin. But by 1996, the villa was too small and renovation began. “The building needed to be updated and more functional - things like putting in a loading dock, adding more restrooms, a restaurant, a theater, and more parking spaces. We wanted to also redesign the entry path so that people entered through the front door,” explains Lapatin. The second floor was redesigned so that there would be natural lighting.

“There are more than 1,200 antiquities in 23 galleries at the villa.” When Getty decided to build a villa in Malibu in the early 1970s, he wanted it modeled after the Villa dei Papiri. Back then he was collecting Greek, Roman and French Decorative Arts. Getty’s long love of art came from his interest in travel and history. He collected his first antiquities at an auction in London in 1939 and fell in love with art from that era. Getty had said about art, “The beauty one can find in art is one of the pitifully few real and lasting products of human endeavor.” In the 1950s, Getty first displayed his antiquities at his ranch house in Malibu. It was open three days a week. However, his ever growing collection, even after adding a wing to the building, grew too big for the ranch house. Not only did he need more room, he wanted to expand the audience and to build a villa that replicated ancient times to provide context for the art. Thus the idea for the Getty Villa was born. Although Getty was living in England in the early 1970s

Such a major makeover was a big undertaking. “We had some opposition from the coastal commission. Some neighbors didn’t want us to build a theater. They were thinking it might be noisy like the Hollywood Bowl,” says Lapatin. In the end, says Lapatin, “This is an unique place. There is nothing like it.” The Barbara and Lawrence Theater is an outdoor classical theater based on ancient prototypes. The Herb Garden is full of fruit trees, fragrant and colorful annuals and perennials used by ancient Romans in cooking, ceremony and medicine. The East Garden is tranquil, a walled sanctuary shaded by sycamore and laurel trees and animated by splashing water from sculptural fountains. Today, some 400,000 people visit the villa a year. “They are struck by the gardens, the marble, the columns, and usually the fountains, but we’ve had to shut some off because of the drought. It’s another world,” says Lapatin. The villa is significant on many levels. “It is the only museum devoted exclusively to ancient Greeks and Romans,” says Lapatin. In addition, there are research, conservation visiting scholar, and collaborative conservation programs. “Here we know how to prepare works for earthquakes. Our teams designed with curators cushion mounting solutions,” says Lapatin of one aspect of the special knowledge that Getty experts share. The theatre is a big draw. This year’s annual outdoor theatrical production is Haunted House Party, A Roman Comedy, presented by the Troubadour Theatre Company from September 8 - October 1. The play is based on Plautus’s Mostellaria. Though Getty died in 1976 and never saw the Villa, it’s part of his enduring legacy. ❖

LOMPOC’S MURAL IN A WEEKEND Celebrating Art & Creativity in Lompoc

S M

L

Lompoc is known for its big art with nearly 40 murals on street corners, in alleyways, and on the sides of prominent buildings. As one of the city’s top attractions, the murals depict scenes of Lompoc’s heritage, flower industry, historic sights, ethnic diversity, scenic beauty and more. This October a new mural will be added to the collection, and those who enjoy the adult coloring book craze will find this artistic experience especially appealing. Artists of the Lompoc Mural Society are sharing their celebrated paint brushes so locals and visitors can help paint a new large-scale agricultural-themed mural during the city’s first “Mural in a Weekend”presented by Explore Lompoc. Master Artist Art Mortimer, creator of the artwork for this mural, will guide artists and volunteer painters in a two-day painting party October 8th and 9th in Old Town Lompoc. Mortimer painted Lompoc's first major commissioned mural "History of the Flower Industry" in 1989 and was the Master Artist for the Mural in a Day "Great Floral Flag" in 1999. In 2001 he created "Flora & Fauna". Those interested in painting on the mural can come for an hour, a few hours, all day, or the entire weekend. Pre-registration to help paint the mural is encouraged to ensure that there are ample supplies and volunters for all shifts. Celebrate the arts with other festivities planned for the Oct 8th weekend: Mural Tours, Art Shows, Art in the Square, Vino & Brushes, and much more. Visit explorelompoc.com/mural-in-a-weekend/

COURTESY OF HOTEL CASA DEL MAR

Four Historic HOTELS BY

IMAAN JALALI

In Southern California, there are a myriad of hotels worth visiting, but there are four in par-

LISA ROMEREIN (4)

ticular that truly represent the region's incomparable scenery with its extraordinary history. These aren't just hotels, but also museums unto themselves.

#1 Casa del Mar 1910 Ocean Way, Santa Monica www.hotelcasadelmar.com

w It's only been since the turn of this century that CASA DEL MAR has been a flourishing hotel. Since opening in 1926, the beach-

front “Palace by the Sea” has accrued a distinguished reputation the moment famed architect Charles Plummer carried out his vision. The establishment has had a multipurpose existence – from being the “Grand Dame” of Southern California beach clubs during the Roaring 20s, to being a housing installation for military personnel during World War II. With the property finally restored to its original resplendence, the Slatkin Brothers opened it to the public, implementing a naturalistic blue-gray décor for the hotel's 129 guest rooms. To a large extent, the Santa Monica gem is not only representative of SoCal culture, but European influences in the form of an Italian Renaissance-inspired ambiance, much of which was updated in 2014 by Michael S. Smith, who also redesigned the Oval Office in 2010. In addition, Executive Chef Gemma Gray of Spain helms the Terrazza Lounge overlooking the beautiful blue ocean, where diners can order palate-perfected menu items such as the flavorful Basil Gimlet cocktail, refreshing Roasted Beets, life-changing Grilled Octopus, and the expertly prepared Sashimi or Nigiri Sushi. #2 U.S. Grant Hotel 326 Broadway, San Diego www.usgrant.net

w A recurring theme among these famous hotels is they have hosted several former U.S. Presidents. Perhaps no hotel can boast more about this honor than the U.S. GRANT, which has been the temporary residence of at least 13 leaders of the free world. It's easy to understand why – as it was President Grant’s second son, Ulysses S. Grant Jr., who commissioned its 270 guest rooms in October 1910, a few of which were (and continue to be) uniquely tailored to Secret Service security standards. More than a century ago, political luminaries entered into an enduring architectural dream (designed by Harrison Albright) and celebrated not only the 18th President, but the social change he enacted – namely passing a bill that set aside the land around the establishment to its indigenous inhabitants, the Kumeyaay Indians. Likewise, the Grant Grill, which used to be a men-only restaurant, became notable for admitting the opposite sex following a successful sit-in by influential women. Today, it carries on its legacy with not only the icons of humanity who've spent a night there, whether it was Albert Einstein or Charles Lindbergh, but serves as a reminder that hotels can be more than their constituent building materials.

#3 Belmond El Encanto 800 Alvarado Place, Santa Barbara www.belmond.com

w Even without its historical cachet, the BELMOND EL ENCANTO

might be Santa Barbara's most beautiful destination. Furtively nestled away in the city's luxuriously verdant hills, it seemingly exists on its own cloud in the sky, smiling down at the endless Pacific Ocean. Built in the Spanish Colonial style, the date of the hotel's original opening is unknown due to the lack of official records. While the early 1900s is generally agreed upon, New Year's Eve 1917 is acknowledged as the ceremonial opening. It was as grand as it is now, having mesmerized Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had a favorite room in which he escaped. Strikingly, the 92 guest rooms (70 bungalows and 22 suites) are freely spread out among the open landscape, like butterflies in a garden. Given that, it should be no surprise the winged beauties are paid homage to throughout the property, none more heart flutter-inducing than a butterfly portrait in the lobby, wrought from crushed diamonds, by artist Damian Hirst. The restaurant, a veritable picturesque heaven, is excellently managed by Stephane Colling, who warmly looks after his guests as they indulge in Santa Barbara Spotted Prawns Crudo, King Crab Leg, Kurobuta Double Pork Chop, and the 100-year-old Enchanted Floating Island dessert (vanilla custard, twice baked meringue, caramel cage). #4 The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa 3649 Mission Inn Avenue, Riverside www.missioninn.com

w In California, or anywhere else, it would be difficult to prove the existence of a hotel richer with indelible examples than this one. One hundred thirty six years ago, Frank Miller ambitiously set out to expand The Glenwood, a modest 12-room adobe boarding house, into THE MISSION INN. Immediately, the property's prestige made Riverside the hub of SoCal, attracting figures like Booker T. Washington and 10 Presidents over the course of time. Stories still abound about Teddy Roosevelt, who planted two navel orange trees on the property (one of which still stands), and William Taft, who had an extra-wide chair specifically crafted for him, which currently sits in front of the Presidential Lounge – the site of Richard Nixon's wedding. Nixon, moreover, found out he was going to be Dwight Eisenhower's Vice Presidential running mate while staying at the Alhambra Suite, which also happens to be the same room in which Ronald and Nancy Reagan honeymooned. Undoubtedly, Miller's vision, including his love of antique bells, can be identified in many corners of the landmark amid its united four wings (Cloister, Spanish, Mission, and International Rotunda). Certainly, history aficionados will find elation at every turn, such as on the fourth floor of the Spanish Wing, which supports the centuries-old Anton Clock, and, below it, five rotating figures important to California. However, the most majestic sights are in the International Rotunda

Wing, which incorporates the Famous Fliers' Wall (where famous aerialists like Amelia Earhart and Buzz Aldrin were personally commemorated), the gold-lavished St. Francis Chapel of Assisi, and fivestory spiral staircase built in 1931, where choral singers gather around during the city's holiday annual Festival of Lights. â?–

While I have heard that some families get along easily and well, I don’t actually know one where some problems don’t arise when they get together. Why bother going to the trouble of planning a gathering or a trip if it may create stress or bad feelings? The answer: With good planning and a little good luck, a family gathering can be a time to have fun, build and strengthen relationships and provide a network of support for its members. The world is full of all kinds of people, and people are messy. Most family members are a mixture of kind and unkind, helpful and unhelpful, healthy and unhealthy. None of us are perfect. Ask yourself if you are better off with these people or not. Is someone you love connected to the family in such a way that it’s beneficial to plan or participate in a family gathering? If you decide to proceed, these tips will help you make the most of your time together.

Logistical Planning for Success: o

Timing. Determine interest and dates from members in advance.

o

Location. Is it convenient and accessible? Check out activities and entertainment for all ages. Be aware of weather forecasts and of everyone’s financial resources.

o

Food Expenses. If it’s a gathering, check out special food requirements, expenses and alcohol use. If it’s a trip, research appropriate places

Clarify expectations and put them in writing in advance:

to eat. o

Organize. Welcome ideas and needs of others and enlist help for specific tasks. Be flexible and change a plan if necessary. Be easy to deal

o

Who will pay for what and how much?

o

Where will people stay and for how long?

o

Who will be responsible for helping to do what?

o

How will transportation be handled?

o

How will food expenses be handled?

o

What about rules for smoking, drinking, driving?

with. o

Communicate with other family members clearly, accurately and often.

o

Appreciate and celebrate. Get in touch with others after the trip or event. Acknowledge individuals for specific help, con-

ing on internet sites.

o

Focus on what’s positive about people; be respectful of others.

o

Keeping connected and learning about family members and family history can be enlightening and rewarding. Creating a gathering of any kind that is mutually respectful and fun can enrich the tapestry of your life with lasting relationships and memories for current and future generations. ❖

Anticipate possible challenging people or situations, then be part of a solution instead of part of a problem.

o

All you can do is all you can do. Take responsibility for your own (and your children’s) behavior.

Have you ever found yourself wanting to take the car and drive off into the wilder-

ness? Perhaps you want to go on a global adventure and

drive all the way down to the tip of South America. Or maybe you have small kids and want to enjoy a secluded, private camping spot without needing to carry all of your gear, plus your child, on your back to find it. You may want to take your car off the beaten path, but without proper training that can be very intimidating. Is your vehicle built for it? How do you properly navigate the terrain and obstacles? What happens if you get a flat tire? How do you get un-stuck? You have questions. Fortunately, Tom Severin has the answers. Lucky adventurers can spend a weekend getting off-road training with Severin and his team at Badlands Off Road Adventures (4x4training.com). Severin is an International 4-Wheel Drive Trainers Association© certified professional 4WD Trainer and a Wilderness First Responder. With major clients including the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, The National Park Service, and the US Marine Corps (4x4training.com/aboutus.html) looking to Severin to train their drivers, you can feel confident that he is eminently qualified to teach you how to take your vehicle down some rough terrain. To top it all off, he is an incredibly friendly and easily approachable guy. The journey begins when you drive yourself up to the Hungry Valley State Recreational Vehicle Area outside of Gorman, where you will start your instruction with Badland’s “Getting Started Off-Road” driving clinic (4x4training.com/TrainingClinics/trainingclass.html). Designed specifically for novices, this clinic begins in the classroom where Severin covers the basics of how 4WD vehicles work, their various operating modes, safety, trail etiquette, and of course driving techniques. Severin also inspects each student’s personal vehicle to make sure it is capable, and helps you understand the limits it might have due to characteristics like clearance and weight. After a morning of flooding your brain with more knowledge about off-roading than you might expect, the afternoon is spent in practical application on the nearby obstacle course. H

“While Severin and his team do a great job of guiding everyone through the obstacles, this is not a trail for those nervous about scratching their SUV.”

Driving up to the course can initially feel very intimidating. There are tall, steep, rut-filled dirt hills to climb (and safely descend;) deep troughs to traverse; and boulder-strewn paths to navigate. Most students start off driving very cautiously. However, as Severin and his team successfully lead you through progressively difficult obstacles, your confidence will rise, and and you will start driving more decisively. Most drivers definitely finish the day off feeling much more comfortable about taking their car off-road. Day two of the class will most certainly put your confidence to the test. Students drive up to meet the team at Jawbone Station, about 20 minutes north of Mojave, where you will re-unite with some classmates from the previous day, as well as meet some new friends. After a quick check in, the group proceeds into the desert for a morning’s practice session on tire placement, picking lines, and recovering stuck vehicles before finally doing what everyone is so anxious to do: take your vehicles out on a real trail.

Heading East from Jawbone Station you drive up a series of trails into the high desert. After all of the instruction is received, it is time to put your skills to the Tom Severin test. While Severin and his team do a great job of guiding everyone through the obstacles, this is not a trail for those nervous about scratching their SUV. The trail isn’t the most difficult out there, but it’s still a rugged jeep trail chosen for its variety of obstacles for drivers to experiment on. The rest of the afternoon is spent happily playing follow the leader up steep and narrow ledge trails, using high angle embankments to skirt around boulders, through sand bottomed stream beds, past narrow rock wall squeezes, and down slick rock slabs all while enjoying beautiful views of the rugged surroundings. This of course is just the beginning, and you can see how people get sucked into this hobby. With fun gadgets and exciting places to travel to that very few people get to experience in person, not to mention bragging rights to claim for world-famously difficult trails, the off-roading lifestyle appeals to the adventurous amongst us. Don’t worry though; Severin has more advanced classes too. Participants need to bring their own food and water. ❖

Best

MARTINI BARS in Southern California

BY

DUSTIN CLENDENEN

“Shaken, not stirred.” James Bond’s

legendary martini instructions are at least partially responsible for the popularity of the drink, but it doesn’t hurt that they’re delicious. The Gold Coast has no shortage of twists on the gin / vodka and dry vermouth combo, and there are just as many unique watering-holes in the region to find your favorite flavor.

Here’s a roundup of the best martini masterpieces in Southern California: H WWW.SOCA LLI FEMAG .COM

In Southern California, we take advantage of any opportunity to be outside. An abundance of sunshine and warmth drives thrill seekers to surfing, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Rock climbing is another activity to add to the itinerary. Natural inclines in SoCal welcome climbers of all skill levels. ose seeking a short climb venture to Point Dume, where the top of the most photogenic corner of the beach offers scenic views. Malibu Creek State Park, Echo Cliffs, and Stoney Point promise a variety of adventures — that is if you’re willing to hike or traverse across the occasional water hole. For a unique experience, Joshua Tree National Park touts 8,000 different climbing routes. Whether it be secluded a slab nestled along a trail or a proud giant at the end of a beach, there is a rock for everyone. Conquering a climb is like solving a life-size puzzle. As a thoughtful tangle of muscles advance, the stillness of the rock contrasts with the climber’s ever changing position. Decisions are slow, hesitant, then deliberate and decisive. e practice is also humbling — just as the climber becomes confident in their challenge, they are taken aback by their next move and briefly grapple for another handhold. Luckily, reliable ropes, guides, and companions reassure them. Indoor climbing offers mental and physical strength building, community, and escape. Outdoor climbing offers all those things, but with a view. ere is no better way to experience direct contact with the earth than to take to the rocks. In the past couple years, many athletes at gyms such as Boulderdash and LA Boulders have done just that. “Outdoor rock climbing has exploded in the past few years,” shared Reid Goodwin, a regular at Malibu Creek State Park who has been climbing for more than 20

years. Goodwin and fellow climber Jen Garrison reminisce on times when the park was less crowded. “People need to have an understanding of etiquette when coming to climb,” Garrison pointed out. When there are too many climbers on one rock or belayers are unable to hear their climbing partners, climber safety is at risk. It is important that new groups know how to yield to other climbers and clean up before they leave. ough rock conquistadors can overpopulate the usual spots on weekends, the growth of the climbing community brings more athletes to one of the most mindful sports. SoCal climber Stephanie Sincoff compared her sport to yoga. Following the grooves and hollows in a massive stone combines focus, patience, and timing. e rocks are a wonderful place to meet people. Climbing is a solitary sport, but outdoor junkies bond through the necessary partnerships to belay (use weight to safeguard a fellow climber) and rappel (descend down the rock). If a tricky climb calls for it, words of advice routinely erupt from the ground below. e gear is an investment, but the ropes, bolts, and harnesses require little maintenance and replacement. “Once you invest in all the gear, you’re set for life,” said advanced SoCal climber Cedar Christensen, “All it costs me now is a few bucks in gas and some Cliff Bars.” To tackle an outdoor climb, beginners should seek mentors who are experts with the gear, safety precautions, and an understanding of climbing routes. ere are a variety of outdoor guiding services available including Rock & Rope Adventures, the Joshua Tree Climbing School, OnRope Consulting, SoCal Adventure Co, and REI Rock Climbing Class to help get an adventurer off the ground. Tools like meetups.com also help climbers schedule gatherings where the experts meet the rookies. Rock climbing is a versatile sport that can fit into many different lifestyles. ere are devotees that drive hours to reach renowned inclines, camp beside beloved rock walls, and rise at dawn for the first challenge. ere are also those who simply devote a Saturday morning to a local climb. As the climbing community grows, there is no better time to grab a handhold and admire Southern California from a higher altitude. ❖

ood entered Leaf’s life in a big way when he moved in with his grandparents in Ohio at the age of 18 while attending hair styling school. Up until then his busy mom mostly prepared meals from a box, but his grandfather was cooking elaborate dinners. “He was making things like a gorgeous chicken milanese - a beautiful chicken cutlet pounded, with risotto,” Leaf recalls.” “He would make this little foil cheat pan, for lack of a better term, and put it on the grill, with broccoli, and we would char the broccoli, which was delicious, with salt and pepper. ey would go to the grocery store every day, which was new, too. My mom would go once a week.” He recorded the recipes on 3x5 index cards and would make those exact meals for guests when he moved to a small studio

apartment in Los Angeles in 2006. While in Los Angeles, as an independent contractor, he worked as a celebrity hairstylist with Hollywood clientele including Taylor Swi, Angela Kinsey (“e Office”), Jenna Ushkowitz (“Glee”), and the cast of “High School Musical.” He also started his YouTube channel with a hair tutorial, which expanded into more of a lifestyle program. Eventually the program started to include more food, including a lobster clambake. “I painted a boat to match the table and I served all the lobster and corn and everything inside the boat and brought it to the center of the table where everyone grabbed from it,” Leaf says. Since Leaf was constantly in New York as editor-at-large of Glamour Magazine and a YouTube producer for hairstylist Sally Herschberger, when Leaf’s husband needed to relocate there for work shortly thereaer in 2013, it made sense. While in New York, Leaf went on a casting call as an entertaining expert for a show on Logo called “Secret Guide to Fabulous,” produced by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos. He was hired to do six episodes where he did such things as farm to table settings and engagement parties. During the second season he found himself preparing a lot of food on the show like flatbreads for an outdoor barbecue, canapes for a wine tasting party and baking a cake for a baby shower. At the end of that season, Leaf had an epiphany. As he was polishing one of the pieces of his antique copper collection one night, he became consumed with making a daube, which Leaf describes as a version of a boeuf bourguignon. “It takes three days to make,” Leaf says. Lightning struck: “I was so obsessed with making this I thought, ‘Why don’t I go to culinary school?’” He immediately got on his iPad and found the International Culinary Center where such notables as Bobby Flay, Dan Barber and Christina Tosi attended, with such instructors as Ron BenIsrael and Lindsay Busanich.

“Never missing an opportunity to enjoy the Southern California coast over a glass of champagne!”

“Classic cooking at its best.”

“Leaf in his element: Making the perfect cuts of fresh dough.”

“My poor husband came home from a work dinner and I said, ‘I’m going to culinary school’,” Leaf recalls. He completed “Secret Guide to Fabulous” and his last day of filming was his first day of culinary school. “At 9:00 I was in my chef’s coat and when school was done, a car picked me up and took me to the last day of principal photography for the show,” Leaf says. For the next six months, Leaf put his life on hold to take food seriously. “It was fantastic, but so hard,” he confesses. “My ego was absolutely out to lunch.” His grandfather stopped by the school, Leaf recalls, and they had lunch. “He was jealous,” Leaf says. In 2013, Leaf and his husband moved back to Los Angeles. He says New York was the right place at the right time, but Southern California enhances what he does. “It’s so alive,” he says. “e produce, the colors are brighter, everything is so much fuller. And just the weather, I’m so much more inspired. Entertaining. We’re out on the deck and having dinner for six or eight people. Having that kind of lifestyle is more suited to Southern California than other cities I’ve lived in.” While Leaf had a taste of the restaurant world aer school when he worked at Bouchon, his desire has never been to be a restauranteur. He does love teaching cooking and says his specialty is French cuisine with a twist. “I love combining French technique with California ingredients,” Leaf says. “For example, something I just did which is so not French, is I took the concept of a veloute and made it very vegan. It’s a white sauce essentially, but it’s usually thickened with creme, but I used roux instead. I made this delicious mushroom stock and then I made a creamy sauce with no cream - flour and fat instead and I used oil instead of butter. I’m not vegan at all, but it’s great to be able to manipulate food and take things out and put things in for different reasons and still get incredible texture and flavor and feel satisfied.” e oil was refined coconut oil, a secret he discovered from working with Erin McKenna, owner of New York’s Babycakes. “Refined coconut oil doesn’t taste like coconut,” he says. “It tastes like butter.” Leaf’s goal is to share with the home chef, techniques and tips he’s encountered along the way, and he does that through his YouTube channel www.youtube.com/user/theodoreleaf and blog. He hopes to make it efficient to do “more in less time, better food in less time,” he says. “To open people’s eyes to what’s possible.” He enjoys interacting with his more than 120,000 subscribers. “I want to create a space to inspire and empower people,” he says. “I feel like there are things that we watch where we say, ‘at’s amazing, but I can’t do that.’ My goal is to get rid of the, ‘I can’t do that.’” ❖

It’s the most glamorous and richest racing event of the season. On November 4-5, the finest thoroughbreds from around the world will gather at Santa Anita Park to compete. Ladies adorn their finest fashions and fascinators while gents don their stylish suits and fedoras. It’s two days of glamour, pageantry and thrills as the world’s top thoroughbreds compete in 13 Championship races, culminating on Saturday with the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (Television: NBC 8pm – 9pm (ET)) — the richest race in North America. This marks a record-setting ninth running of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita. Held annually at different tracks around the country, attendance is traditionally second only to the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes or Kentucky Oaks. Last year's Breeders’ Cup Classic winner American Pharoah, ridden by famed jockey Victor Espinoza, went on to win the first ever Grand Slam of thoroughbred racing by winning the Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup Classic. From its inauguration in 1984 through 2006, it was a single-day event. Today, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships has grown into a $28 million two-day extravaganza drawing the best horses, trainers, jockeys and owners from around the globe. It has also become the unofficial end of the thoroughbred racing season and a deciding factor in selecting the Horse of the Year. Continuing its tradition of collaborations to raise funds for important causes, the Breeders’ Cup and Maker’s Mark® have selected Old Friends Farm, home to some of racing's most legendary retired thoroughbreds, as the official charity beneficiary of the 2016 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. Pour mixture into prepared loaf pan and bake for 55-60 minutes until a tester comes out clean. 6. Cool in pan for 15 minutes. Remove from pan and let cool to room temperature. Slice and serve.

I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM! The Yummiest Must-Try Ice Cream BY

LISA KESTENBAUM

In Southern California, the time to scream for ice cream is pretty much all year round. And with dozens of

shops serving the frozen favorite, there are more choices than ever to get your sweet tooth fix. So whether it’s topped with sprinkles, in a cone or simply a la mode, here are our

top five picks to grab a scoop! Santa Barbara

MCCONNELL’S CREAMERY A classic staple of SANTA BARBARA, MCCONNELL’S CREAMERY has been a go-to spot for locals and visitors since its founding in 1949. Situated on the ever-busy State Street, McConnell’s shop has the feel of an old ice cream parlor: black and white tiled floors, ceiling fans and of course, a friendly staff who gladly offer samples of the shop’s unique and classic flavors. The company makes every batch of ice cream from scratch, sourcing dairy from its creamery in Central California and fruits, nuts and other ingredients from local farm collectives. Looking for a sweet summertime favorite? Try Eureka Lemon & Marionberries for a refreshing treat.

Ventura

FOSTER’S FREEZE If you’re after something classic, stop into FOSTER’S FREEZE on VENTURA’S TELEGRAPH ROAD for a soft serve cone dipped in chocolate. You can’t go wrong with this iconic indulgence – it’s simple, smooth and creamy, and always hits the spot.

Los Angeles

SALT & STRAW No city has embraced the artisanal ice cream trend more than LOS ANGELES. New shops seem to be popping up on every corner, offering seasonal, local and unique flavors that people crave. Walking down LARCHMONT BLVD. In the middle of Los Angeles, you are guaranteed to bump into a line that snakes outside and down the sidewalk of a little ice cream shop, SALT & STRAW. A Portland native, Salt & Straw made its way to the City of Angels two years ago and the quaint storefront has been a destination spot for Angelenos ever since. Founded by cousins who share a passion for treating oneself and supporting local commerce, Salt & Straw offers flavors like Strawberry Cilantro Lime Cheesecake, Black Olive Brittle & Goat Cheese, and Honey Vinegar with Raspberry Fig Cobbler. Their staff encourages you to mix and match flavors that you may not think go together (maybe you never even thought to try one alone) for a unique treat that never disappoints. Other Los Angeles locations currently include STUDIO CITY and GRAND CENTRAL MARKET in Downtown.

Orange County

FARRELL’S At FARRELL’S in ORANGE COUNTY, one must fully embrace the “bigger is better” mentality. With menu items like The Pig’s Trough, Mt. Saint Helens and the Volcano, it’s advisable to skip dinner altogether and go straight to dessert. With Farrell’s Zoo, you can dig your spoons into 30 scoops of ice cream, chocolate sauce, strawberry and marshmallow toppings, whipped cream, sprinkles, cherries and bananas. It’s the ultimate sundae and not for the faint of heart. Stick with a traditional sundae and you’re not missing out on the fun – choose from ice cream nachos (waffle cones in place of tortilla chips), the Sour Caramel Apple or the Banana Royale. And if you can’t find a flavor combination that tickles your fancy on the menu, there is always the option to build your own master creation.

San Diego

OASIS ICE CREAM PARLOR OASIS ICE CREAM PARLOR in IMPERIAL BEACH, SAN DIEGO has been curing sweet teeth in the area since

1978. Known for old-fashioned favorites like pistachio, Oasis is also home to unique, traditional Mexican-style ice cream flavors, like peanut butter and guava, cucumber and chili, or chamoy. The shop also sells fruit bars, which are a favorite during hot summer days and good ‘til the last lick. Don’t try to use your Apple Pay here, though – the family owned and operated establishment is cash only. ❖

developed in the 1920s by real estate visionary A. W. Ross, who successfully converted a cow path into what is now Wilshire Boulevard as Los Angeles began decentralizing with the advent of the streetcar and automobile. e legendary strip of Wilshire between Fairfax and La Brea became a popular high-end shopping mecca long before the arrival of malls and has endured several declines and rebirths. Today it's flourishing with a few remaining historical art deco structures dominated by modern buildings and glistening high-rises. CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: 1. LACMA's renowned Lake Pit Walk depicts a Columbian mammoth trapped in the tar as her mate and offspring watch powerlessly from the shore. 2. Outdoor Jazz Nights at LACMA on Fridays through September are among the museum's extensive offering of music programs. 3. Collections in the Petersen Automotive Museum date back to 1886. 4. Behind the new signature façade of the Petersen Automotive Museum are exhibits and collections dating back to 1886. 5. The distinctive façade of the CAFAM was designed and painted by Los Angeles artist Shrine.

Museum ROW e major attraction today on the Miracle Mile is Museum Row, anchored by the La Brea Tar Pits, the world's most famous Ice Age fossil excavation site that continues to bubble and entrap small mammals, birds and insects. While the museum houses more than 3.5 million fossils, including mammoths, sabertoothed cats, dire wolves, and more, don't look for dinosaurs. ey became extinct 65 million years before the pits began trapping their prey. e recently-renovated and expanded Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the largest museum in the western U.S., is recognized internationally for its 130,000 pieces of art depicting both history and geography. Current exhibitions include "Picasso and his Printers," "CARtoons: Art of America's Car Culture," and "James Turrell, Light Reignfall."

BY THE CRAFT & FOLK ART MUSEUM

LACMA and La Brea Tar Pits are both within Hancock Park, a grassy respite with picnic benches and play area for kids. You can also enjoy a few free exhibits such as LACMA's Lake Pit Walk featuring its internationally-renowned model of a Columbian mammoth trapped in the tar with her mate and offspring watching helplessly from the shore. Petersen Automotive Museum underwent a $90 million renovation in 2015 resulting in its new signature façade and expanded exhibit space. Collections dating back to 1886 include Hollywood Cars, Race Cars, Vintage and more that feature an 1886 Benz, 1917 Harley-Davidson Model J, and 1933 Ford Roadster. At press time, there were also 18 exhibits including Howlin': Vehicles from the Nearburg Collection, Hotrods & Customs, and Automobiles in the Movies featuring the iconic vehicles in "Back to the Future," a Batmobile, Magnum PI Ferrari, and more. The Craft & Folk Art Museum (CAFAM) on Museum Row since 1965 exhibits current artists with distinctive perspectives and practices seldom seen in larger institutions. Educational programs for children, adults, and families include cra workshops, poetry readings, print- making sessions and community outreach Folk Art Everywhere program.

Life’s a

BEACH BY

SCOTT HARRIS

Southern California is known for a few things:

necessary for a day at the beach (and which miraculously just show up in the movies), I was able to carve out an area of beach roughly the size of an airplane bathroom. I think I was still closer to my car than I was to the Pacific Ocean, but after dropping my car keys in the sand, I wasn’t sure it was going to matter. The people closest to me had to have taken lessons in order to be as annoying as they were. They found their kids kicking sand everywhere — including into my sandwich — to be quite funny. And since they couldn’t hear me over the extremely loud (and bad) music they were sharing with everyone around, I didn’t say anything. Their dog seemed to be the only one who found the water and managed to save quite a bit of it before shaking it all over me, and what was left of my lunch. I finally packed up, hiked back to the car, racking up the steps on my Fitbit (found my flip flop!) and headed for home. I washed the sand out of my car, my ice chest and my shorts. I rubbed lotion on the body parts that were now lobster red and turned on a rerun of Baywatch to see how to do it right. After picking up a tip or two, I called a friend and made plans to do it again next Saturday. After all, it’s summer in Southern California and the beach is the place to be. ❖

beautiful people, movies, quirky politics and, of course, freeways and cars. It’s possible, though, that if forced to pick one iconic thing about SoCal, it would be our beaches. From San Diego to Ventura, highlighted by Malibu and its worldwide reputation, we (and the world) love our beaches. I’ve seen many of the movies and television shows that have been shot at our beaches, so I know how it’s supposed to work. You pull up to a stunning beach in a convertible filled with beautiful people, find a parking spot right up front (no charge, of course) and walk toward a wide open sandy spot of a couple hundred feet — close enough to the water to be romantic and fun, but far enough away to not be concerned about high tide. You are surrounded by equally beautiful people — perfectly tanned, all laughing and eating catered lunches, and all a respectful distance away from you. At the end of a perfect day, you rinse off the three to four grains of sand from the bottom of your feet in an outdoor shower — nicer than the one at your home. You climb back into your convertible and head off for a beachside sushi restaurant that you are told, “you just have to try.” And of course, you get the last four seats, front and center at the bar. My experience last weekend was just slightly different. I parked a half-mile away from the beach, paying $25 for the privilege, risked life and limb trying to get across Pacific Coast Highway (losing a flip flop on the way), and then hopped on one foot through an impossibly hot asphalt parking area before hitting the even hotter beach sand. Balancing all of the things

MY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Scripps Pier, La Jolla Carlos Sanchez

I discovered my passion for photography two years ago and never looked back. Now I'm embarking on a musical adventure and can’t wait to see what's to come. I want to go from taking photos at concerts for people such as The Last Shadow Puppets and Pierce the Veil to being the guy on that stage. I want to go from taking photos of landscapes, to taking photos of crowds also. Live your dreams and dream your life. Personal Instagram @Carlos_Sanchez94 | Band Instagram @TheElectricEnzymes. While people around the world may only associate Southern California with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood or the laid back attitude of sunny San Diego, SoCal has so much more to offer. Just outside of its celebrated urban centers, it is a rugged place, a place of extremes, with hot red rock deserts, cold-water pacific islands with wild kelp beds, and snow capped mountain peaks. At least, that’s how I see Southern California. How do you see it? We want to know! We at Southern California Life magazine are devoted to showing you all that it has to offer. We’ll close each issue showcasing the beauty of our region, with its landscapes, and landmarks. And we want you, our readers, to participate. For a chance to be published on our “My Southern California” photo page, follow us on Instagram (@socallifemag) and use these hashtags in your favorite photos of the landscapes, landmarks, and lifestyles that you think define our home: #ThisIsMySoCal #Socallifemagcontest.
