MONIQUE REIDY

Watching television was a rare event for me when my kids were young. as most working parents know, juggling carpool, homework, aer-school events, meals and everything else in between can be tricky and time-consuming. if i took the opportunity to watch tV i felt i was wasting time. But then the travel Channel happened. program aer program, the travel Channel covered fabulous far-away places that i hoped i could visit when life would finally slow down. for someone who couldn’t give a flip about watching tV, i was mesmerized by what was featured. i was especially obsessed with Samantha Brown’s shows: “great hotels”, “girl meets hawaii” and “great Weekends” and thought, now there’s a woman who figured out how to blend work and play effectively. i was captivated by her coverage of vacation destinations and travel tips, and believed Brown surely had the best job in the world. my life has since taken varied twists and turns, the kids are grown and gone, and Brown’s journeys became a part of my ancient history. until i thought about her recently as i sat poolside in punta de mita sipping a cold beverage and writing a travel piece on my ipad. i realized the job i thought to be the most amazing was now mine (minus the tV coverage part). e enthusiasm i experienced each time i saw Brown prance from one location to another is the same passion that fuels my work today. i emphatically believe that searching for our passion can be a frustrating exercise because like a heat-seeking missile, our passion always finds us, not the other way around. Life can take us through unexpected routes that can ultimately teach us what we don’t want, which only refines our sense of what we do want. in my case, my life has evolved into the perfect combination of my passion for magazines and my love of travel. although our magazine is about exploring the best of Southern California, we feature a travel section in every issue called “e Weekender,” which spotlights destinations beyond our Southland borders. it has become so popular that four years into publishing Southern California Life magazine, we are launching an additional publication featuring 100% travel content called “Weekend escapes.” We hope you’ll look for it on newsstands, especially when you’re looking for travel inspiration. ank you for reading our magazines – you help propel our passion forward and in turn, we hope to similarly inspire you. Warmly,

“If you’re lucky enough to find a way of life you love, you have to find the courage to live it.” John Irving

CALL IT QUIRKY, A FLYING SAUCER, FUTURISTIC OR WHATEVER. THE LAX

eme Building has long been recognized globally as the iconic landmark for Los angeles international airport and the sprawling, innovative city of Los angeles. Completed in 1961 at the beginning of the Space age, today it remains one of the world's most distinctive and significant architectural works. resembling a hovering spaceship resting on four curved appendages, it has long been featured in movies, tV shows and is now appearing in streaming media and lots of selfies. Built in the highly influential and popular mid-Century modern googie style, an entire generation considered the building to be the personification of futurism. it was even used (along with works from other expressionists) to inspire the design of the space age architecture in e Jetsons tV series. The Back Story designed by renowned architects pereira & Luckman, paul r. Williams, and robert herrick Carter, the eme Building was declared a L.a. Cultural and historical Building in 1992. e original concept had called for a much larger futuristic glass structure to serve as LaX’s central ticketing terminal with long, enclosed passageways linking to surrounding sub-terminals where passengers would board their planes. Before construction began, however, it was reconfigured into the smaller landmark we know today. H

The Bob Hope USO at LAX, which serves about 8,500 military members and families monthly, has a 20-year lease on the ground floor.

Encounter, a popular restaurant with panoramic views on the second floor, closed in 2014.

While the exterior of the 135-foot-tall building has shown little change over the years, its usage has undergone a major transformation driven by the changing interests of a fast-moving society. in the early 1960s, television was relatively new. Computers, cell phones and video games were decades away. families still took Sunday drives to nowhere, ate dinner together nightly, and went to airports to watch planes take off and land. With unparalleled views of airport activity and beyond from dome's restaurant and observation deck, both were hugely popular for years. pan am had just introduced the first overseas jet service in 1958. national airlines and american airlines inaugurated the first u.S. domestic jet flights in 1959 followed by delta and united. during those peak years, travelers would join local friends and family on the observation deck or in the dome's restaurant and bar until 911, aer which security tightened and the observation deck was closed. passengers had to check in twice, making social gatherings in the dome impractical. encounter, the last restaurant to close (1997-2014),offered space-age interiors to complement the views. City deli on the lower level, a particular favorite among airport personnel, closed in 2016 due also to a lack of traveling patrons who now opted for snacks and dining in the terminals' secured areas. times had changed. in 2010, following a $12.3 million building restoration and earthquake retrofit by Walt disney imagineering, the observation deck reopened. today, visitors now have access during the second weekend of each month from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. e restaurant level remains closed.

The futuristic saucer-shaped formation sits about 15 feet above ground on four steel-reinforced concrete legs.

e original Bob hope uSo here opened in 2000 and expanded in 2003. it was designed to accommodate 12,000 military travelers and their families annually in four temporary trailers with a combined total of 3,600 square feet. ose numbers were exceeded decades ago. Last year alone, the LaX uSo managed to assist more than 104,000 troops and their families. in another 20 years, an estimated 2.7 million troops and military families will visit the center. e newly-designed ground floor facility is almost doubling the uSo's space to 7,100 square feet. Brand new features include a curated display honoring Bob hope at the entrance; a family wing with a play area, family restroom, and three private family rooms; secure luggage storage, nap room, big screen media/tV room, gaming and entertainment, canteen snack bar, dining room and phone/device charging stations. all services are provided without charge to active-duty military personnel and their dependent families. additional benefits include the free use of cell phones to call home; a team of volunteers to assist with onward transportation services; shortterm temporary parking for brief visits; passenger pick-up and drop off; and discount hotel reservations. for more information, visit BobHopeUSO.org. is new facility not only provides a much-needed, state-ofthe-art home for the Bob hope uSo at LaX. it also breathes new life into a true SoCal icon that has, for too long, been seeking a new purpose in today's world. ❖

The Theme Building Today

e first floor of the dome currently houses the LaWa VipS (Los angeles World airports Volunteer information professionals) and their pupS (pets unstressing passengers) program. moving into a large section of the remaining space around the end of July (as of this writing), with the official ribbon cutting scheduled in September, is the Bob hope uSo at LaX.

Mickey’s Halloween Party 1313 disneyland drive anaheim, Ca 92802 t

If you have children or younger folks in your family, this option might be the very best one in Southern California. One could never go wrong with the “Happiest Place on Earth,” especially between September 19th and October 31st, when Disneyland and California Adventure celebrate Halloween. The Headless Horseman will make his triumphant return to lead the Frightfully Fun Parade on Main Street and beyond, where parkgoers will get a chance to mingle with villainous characters like the Evil Queen, and be entertained by the famous barbershop quartet, the Cadaver Dans (otherwise known as the Dapper Dans). Clad in costumes, people of all ages will get to trick-or-treat, experience the Halloween Screams fireworks show, take the Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy ride, and step foot into a “Nightmare Before Christmas” - themed Haunted Mansion. The Haunted Hayride 4730 Crystal Springs drive Los angeles, Ca 90027 t For several years now, nestled in the obscure brushes of Griffith Park, the Haunted Hayride has become of the Southland’s favorite haunts. This fall, fans of the installation will have even more to look forward to in the form of Purgatory, a fearsome and foggy village that glows with a penetrating gruesomeness. The Scary Go-Round can also be ridden here, where participants can get a bite to eat or visit the Bootique. There is, in addition, one of the only dark mazes in the SoCal region, the House of Shadows, which will diabolically impress upon even the most courageous, who will have to fight for ownership of their souls. Last, but not least, is the famed Haunted Hayride itself which begins with a scenic and placid jaunt upon a hay wagon, before crazy clowns start appearing in the ghoulish midst, their nasty grins beckoning riders to unceremoniously disembark and wade through an equally perilous corn maze. The three-day Mexican Holiday (Oct. 31-Nov. 2), El Día de Muertos, or The Day of the Dead, will be celebrated in conjunction with America’s Halloween on Saturday, October 27, at the Four Seasons Resort at The Biltmore Santa Barbara. The five-hour evening soirée will be sinister and yet breathtaking as it will transpire on the 22-acre grounds of the resort, comprised of ocean-front bungalows and terraces. Dressed in elaborately ghastly garb, attendees will have the opportunity to move their skeletons to the beat of DJ’d dance-floor fun. With cocktail tastings, and even a costume competition to cap things off, the event promises to be a moribundly memorable evening for all. FOURSEASONS.COM/SANTABARBARA H

The Ultimate Escape Rooms 1591 Spinnaker drive Ventura, Ca 93001 t Owned and operated by the versatile Annette Cortez, who has been aided along the way by married couple Alexis and Scott Crouse, the head of Marketing/Creativity, and the Chief Technology Officer, respectively, The Ultimate Escape Rooms has been a huge hit in Ventura. The fun doesn’t happen only during Halloween, but year-round. The company, which now has a second location in Solvang, offers four escape rooms in which groups of 2 to 10 people have 60 agonizing minutes to be free of their claustrophobic surroundings. Audacious participants are advised to remain calm under pressure as they choose between the “Mermaid’s Curse” (a “fun” trip turned upside down) “The Attic” (a childhood nightmare that returns with a vengeance), “We Are All Mad Here” (a surreally disorienting experience with talking animals and shrinking rooms), or “The Wizard’s Lair” (where an evil wizard’s magic must be used against him). Having originated in 2006 in Silicon Valley, escape rooms like these test one’s mettle and wherewithal to collaborate with others, using clues and strategies, for the greater good and to simply survive! San Diego Zombie Crawl gaslamp Quarter in San diego t On October 26, 27, and 31 – from 6 p.m.- 2 a.m. – fans of Halloween and partying will have the opportunity to combine the two and take part in the San Diego Zombie Crawl Gaslamp Takeover. And no, zombie costumes aren’t necessarily required, - you can don any outfit of your choice! For a relatively affordable early bird special of no more than $25, each individual will have access to not just “welcome” shots, as well as hotel and Uber discounts, and food/beverage specials, but 25 haunting and happening parties (including an opening night bash) around the downtown area. Participating venues include the Coyote Ugly Saloon, the OMNIA and FLUXX nightclubs, Tin Roof, the Garage Kitchen + Bar, Greystone Prime Steakhouse & Seafood, and Serrano’s Street Tacos, among many more. Needless to say, you can bring your fun-having friends, immerse yourselves in the limitless crawl along a guided route, and wildly (but responsibly!) cover each and every nightlife opportunity with the same unbridled determination as a zombie on the prowl would. ❖ SANDIEGOZOMBIECRAWL.COM

hen you think of downtown Burbank, the first thing that probably pops into mind is the old nBC Studios where Johnny Carson once ruled nighttime and shows are still taped today. it's the last place you'd expect to see a bona fide artisanal winery, but that's exactly where you'll find urban press Winery which produces some of Sonoma’s finest quality, rhone varietals, Bordeaux and tuscan style wines, ranging from 2012 to 2016. urban press will have 40 varietals by the end of September including creative blends you'll not find anywhere such as a petit Verdot blended with Zinfandel. Since opening in 2016 on north San fernando road, the boutique winery has become one of SoCal's best finds. here amid 170+ retail and entertainment options in a vibrant downtown setting including Burbank town Center mall, World market , and amC Burbank 16 – the second most visited theatre in the country, you can relax in authentic wine country surroundings and enjoy a new wine or two with a small plate, pasta specialty or, as of mid-September, wood-fired pizza hot from the new woodburning oven. adding to the fun are ongoing events including live entertainment with magician michael rangel every Wednesday night now through mid-december with live jazz and other music groups on fridays and Saturdays. it's also a popular spot for private business and social events which you might want to consider for upcoming birthdays, anniversaries, bridal showers or office parties. e urban press experience goes far beyond the usual winery tasting at a counter sipping from small glasses and cleansing the palate between samples with little bites of cheese and crackers. You

are totally immersed in full wine country tasting protocols experienced in an impressive setting of reused and finely finished woods, brick, walls lined with mesmerizing rows of bottles from floor to ceiling, a private barrel tasting room and mood lighting by elegant crystal chandeliers. and you don't have to worry about parking. downtown Burbank has more than 9,000 free parking spaces.

The Back Story now you may think that owner and vintner of a winery craing such fine quality wines might have learned his trade in a wellknown chateau. good guess. giovanni d'andrea grew up in montreal making great wines with his father from imported grapes in challenging conditions for a winemaker. aer moving to Los angeles in the 1980s, giovanni's ingenuity and resourceful determination were instrumental in designing the first digital juke box for touchtunes Jukebox, getting the first rights to download music over the internet, becoming one of the founders of streaming music, and in 2000-2001 he was a video pioneer. he also continued the family tradition and began making wines in his Los feliz home garage, sourcing grapes from wine growers in the region. reputation and demand grew every year and his lifelong desire to own a winery could no longer be denied. after carefully researching California's wine growing regions, he settled on Sonoma County. however, instead of purchasing a vineyard as originally planned, he decided to focus

With a little advice from his father and following methods practiced by California's first winemakers, he selected only the finest grapes harvested by the finest growers, and transported them to his winery where they were crushed, fermented, and bottled in small batches to be sold exclusively. he has tight relationships with growers in the Sonoma Valley as well as alexander Valley, geyserville, and Lake County, maintaining control over harvesting and other key aspects. e only limitation upon the different kinds of wines he produces today is his time, interest, and a successful harvest season.

Can't find a dog sitter? Your furry Bff is welcome in the patio and picnic area. to say d’andrea’s passion is to not only produce fine boutique wines at reasonable prices but to enrich their enjoyment by sharing stories about how they came to be is an understatement. e goal giovanni and his sommelier share is to educate as many wine enthusiasts as possible so that they not only appreciate the hint of blackberries, chocolate and dried plum in a medium-bodied cabernet sauvignon but how the wine came to be.

Sonoma comes to Burbank from the moment you enter urban press Winery, you're immersed in rich wine country ambiance. e space, previously a newsstand, is divided into two long narrow rooms finished in rich woods and brick and illuminated by large, ornate crystal chandeliers. on one side is the tasting room with its long bar, glasses of every shape and size, and award-winning urban press bottles on the wall adding to the décor. on the other side are rooms with floor-to-ceiling walls of perfectly-aligned bottles and a private barrel taste room of aged wines. add in the large deck with its massive, stunning greek-

t For 150 years, Old Pasadena has been through an immense amount of change and even had a revival in the 1990s after experiencing decay in the 1960s and 1970s. The historic district was once Pasadena’s original marketplace and it is the oldest commercial area. Old Pasadena consists of 21 blocks, which were designated a National Register Historic District in 1983. During the 1920s the Spanish Colonial Revival style of architecture was iconic for California’s landscapes. The style soon became symbolic of Pasadena's "Golden Age" of prosperity. The low-rise brick facades, architectural accents and historic alleyways are only a small part of what makes Old Pasadena what it is today. It may look familiar because the annual New Year’s Day Rose Parade runs through the heart of Old Pasadena. Old meets new here, as rustic scenery is intertwined with bustling commercial businesses. Its open-air eateries, specialty boutiques, galleries, theaters and more give it a modern feel with an old town charm. OLDPASADENA.ORG H

Old Town Tustin t California’s heritage is clearly visible on the streets of Tustin. Its old town is centered within a group of buildings between Main Street and El Camino Real — the 600-mile road that connects California’s 21 missions. Dating back to the 1880s, the old town area once included a blacksmith shop, a combined grocery store/meat market, a business and feed store building, churches and school buildings. Over the past 100 years, the architecture has remained the same, but businesses have evolved. Preservationists have restored the aging structures to keep them in perfect condition for years to come. Currently, the old town is home to an historic museum where visitors can learn about the history of Tustin and see its growth in pictures. Also, there is a two-mile walking tour – perfect for the summer – where visitors can truly see the authenticity of Tustin’s oldest buildings. Located nearby on 6th street, visit the newer “El Camino Plaza” which houses some of Orange County’s prettiest desserts. TUSTINCA.ORG/ABOUT/HISTORY/OLDTOWN.ASP

t Sampling craft beer and enjoying antique shops from the 1880s is not something you would think to do in the same day. However, at Old Town Temecula, that and more are possible. Temecula is the only city in California to keep its original Indian name, which translates to “where the sun breaks through the mist.” A source of Temecula’s sunny charm was its first commercial vineyard in 1968, which started the trend that put Temecula on the map for wine connoisseurs. Intertwined among the older western-era buildings are modern, trendier spots which house farm-to-table dining and music festivals. While the new has been brought into Temecula, the old cannot be forgotten! Rustic buildings, sidewalks and storefronts remind visitors of the iconic golden west era. You’ll feel like you’re on a western movie set as you take a stroll along the wooden boardwalks and admire the storefronts filled with antiques. Drive down Front Street to discover a large metal entryway with cutouts of cowboy scenes. Saddle up, and take an adventure through Old Town Temecula! VISITTEMECULAVALLEY.COM/THINGS-TO-DO/OLD-TOWN H

Old Town San Diego t

Old Town San Diego was established in 1769 as California’s first Spanish settlement. With 12 acres of Mexican heritage, there is undoubtedly a cultural experience waiting for you here. The preservation of historic buildings has allowed visitors to experience San Diego and all of its beauty from the 1820s onward. Visit the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park to experience life in the early Mexican-American period of 1821-1872. For a true glimpse at ghosts from the past, the Whaley House Museum, constructed in 1851, is one of two designated haunted houses in California. Celebrate San Diego’s heritage by walking through beautiful gardens, browsing the specialty shops or enjoying a deliciously authentic Mexican meal at one of Old Town’s restaurants. San Diego’s largest weekly artisan market takes place every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring handmade works from local artisans. While you browse, listen to the vibrant sounds of live mariachi bands who perform every day. OLDTOWNSANDIEGO.ORG

Old Towne District in Orange The Old Towne District of Orange is located near Chapman University. Most known for its fountain, established in 1937, and the roundabout street surrounding the fountain, the district is often coined “the circle” by locals. Here, you will find 50 different types of architecture from 1888 to 1940. More than 1,300 homes and buildings in Old Towne Orange have been placed on the National Record of Historic Places sine 1997. The circle has been featured in movies and TV shows such as The Bench Warmers and American Horror Story: Cult. It is also known for its International Street Fair, where the entire community gathers to celebrate its melting pot of cultures. Known as the “Antique Capital of California,” Old Towne has more than 40 antique shops that hold hidden gems and thrifts you can’t get anywhere else. With an abundance of coffee shops and quick-bites nearby, the circle is a great place to grab something on-the-go for a picnic at the fountain. MT. FIGUEROA BREWERY t In Santa Barbara, a town otherwise known for its sleepy charm, Mt. Figueroa Brewery is always a bustling spot. Developed in 2010 by Jaime and Jim Dietenhofer, a son-and-pop team, and named after the crest of land seen from their home in Los Olivos, Mt. Figueroa now boasts five breweries up and down the coast. Affectionately knowns as #FigFans, lovers of Mt. Figueroa flock there for the Hoppy Poppy IPA and Lizard’s Mouth Imperial IPA, two of the most popular varieties. “We don’t focus on strange ingredients in our beer,” explained Brand Director Kady Fleckenstein. “Rather, we hone in on creating balanced beers true to their style that can be enjoyed by anyone.” Unique details come through in hand-drawn artwork and customized communications for each of the brand’s taprooms, where visitors can not only take in delicious varieties on tap but also the heart and soul of this family-run brand. SMOG CITY t Smog City is a favorite among seasoned beer aficionados. Here, they push the boundary of what beer can be without straying far from tradition, explained Laurie Porter of the Torrance spot. By staying away from trends and catering to their loyal customer base, Smog City offers a wide variety of brews in their taproom, which is also the production area. Sitting in the shadow of the tanks, imbibers can sample their ever-popular coffee porter, the Little Bo Pils or the best-selling (but seasonal) Amarilla Gorilla and Infinite Wishes, which both come out during the holiday season. Smog City is also taking the tasting experience to new levels by opening a satellite taproom in SteelCraft, Los Angeles County’s first ever food lot built entirely of shipping containers. The Long Beach site will house a flower shop, coffee shop, restaurants, and the Smog City tasting room. Porter hopes to recreate the personal, local experience visitors have in the Torrance location in this new, unique spot. SMOGCITYBREWING.COM

Other rare pours include Trade Winds, a Beligan-style triple with thai basil; Melange #15, a bourbon barrel aged blended ale with walnuts, cacao and vanilla; and Wiki Wiki Tart, a sour ale with passionfruit, raspberry and hibiscus. LOST ABBEY t With more breweries and tap rooms than any other Southern California city, San Diego is rife with options. But Lost Abbey in San Marcos stands out among the crowd favorites. Hailing from the monastic brewing tradition of Belgian monks, co-founder Vince Marsaglia was inspired to lead a crusade of making locally-brewed beers that go a little outside of the box. The Non-Denominational selections are brewed without any particular style in mind and released whenever they are ready. One example, Duck Duck Gooze, is a gueuze-style beer, with hints of “oak, leather, Brettanomyces and funk.” Released once every three years, it’s a blend of young and old barrel aged beers and has the surprise tartness of sour ales. This beer provides a pleasant surprise to any palate. LOSTABBEY.COM

Popular seasonal offerings are Bubblehead Blood Orange Pale Ale, Washed Ashore Watermelon Blonde and Underway Tropical IPA. “As an industry we're mixing styles, such as Belgians with IPAs and aging beer on wine barrels,” explained proprietor Vinita. “We're trying new experimental hops that the growers are producing and we're adding all sorts of different ingredients to our brews. MADCHEN AMICK

NOW THAT “RIVERDALE’S” MADCHEN AMICK HAS CHILDREN OF HER OWN, SHE CAN’T BELIEVE SHE LEFT HER HOME IN NEVADA AT 16 TO MOVE TO LOS ANGELES BY HERSELF. BY ROBYN FLANS

T

he actress who plays alice Cooper on the popular show came to town and hit the ground running. She set herself up to succeed. She made a deal with her parents that if she wasn’t providing for herself within a year, she had to go back home and figure out something else to do. “i was very motivated,” amick says. “and my work ethic was very strong, and still is. if i’m not juggling three projects, i’m not doing enough. i enjoy what i do and i’m just really good at juggling and managing my career.” When amick was 14 years old, her father, a travelling musician, was playing in the Los angeles area, so her grandmother and aunt took her to spend a week with her stepsister who was living in Los angeles. amick, who was a trained ballerina, played piano, bass and violin and was beginning theater in high school, knew she wanted to be in the business. during her visit to Los angeles, she went to elite model’s open call to seek representation. even though she is short for model standards, they told her if she returned emancipated at age 16, they would represent her. at 16, amick and her mother packed the Chevrolet Citation and returned to Los angeles. her step-sister had moved so she didn’t know anyone, but they found a room for her to rent with an elderly couple and she stayed with them for about a year and a half. elite modeling honored the commitment, she secured commercial and theatrical agents and landed modeling jobs, music videos, commercials and independent films. Within a year, she was financially independent. her first film, “e Borrower”, was produced in 1988, although was not released until 1991. She landed the pilot for “Baywatch” at the same time she was cast in “Star trek: e next generation.” “So there i was, juggling three things, which has become my pattern ever since,” she says. e following year amick scored her break-out role of Shelly Johnson, the young waitress in “twin peaks.” it remains one of her favorites as it was the first time she got to exercise her acting muscles and work with one of the geniuses of our time – david Lynch. other projects she is especially proud of include “dream Lover” which she says challenged her as an actor due to the complexities of the character, and “freddie,” which she enjoyed because it was a comedy. aer a year and a half in Los angeles, she was looking for an apartment in the building across the street and lo and behold, she met her husband-to-be, david alexis, that very same day in the lobby. She wasn’t looking for a relationship, but it couldn’t be stopped. e conversation was easy and within a few months, the deal was sealed.

e two have been together ever since – for 31 years. She says alexis has always been supportive and has never had a problem with her being an actress – even with the love scenes. “he understands that it’s just pretend,” amick says. “it’s how you do the job. You connect with the other actor and then you come home and snuggle with your husband. and then it’s real.” and somehow amick made the time to have two children – mina, 25, and Sylvester, 26. While she continued to work, her husband changed professions from a recording artist to a personal trainer so he could be home more with their children. “not even babies could stop me,” amick says with a laugh. ey moved to the east coast for several years aer she gave in to pleas from creator/producer/writer darren Star to work on “Central park West.” “i immediately got a job on the West coast - a show with freddie prince, Jr., so i was commuting back and forth trying to make plays, football games and recitals.” Currently, she spends 10 months in Vancouver filming “riverdale,” a show she enjoys. “alice Cooper on riverdale is batshit crazy and she’s so fun to play,” amick says. “She keeps me entertained.” even with a heavy workload, the juggler has managed to get a scripted show in development at Showtime and a docu-series completed for presentation at the same time. “of course i’m never satisfied to just be on a hit television show,” she concludes with a laugh. ❖

“HE UNDERSTANDS THAT IT’S JUST PRETEND. IT’S HOW YOU DO THE JOB. YOU CONNECT WITH THE OTHER ACTOR AND THEN YOU COME HOME AND SNUGGLE WITH YOUR HUSBAND. AND THEN IT’S REAL.”

Justin Kalani burbage The social media influencer who’s having just too much fun. twenty-four-year old Justin kalani Burbage is a native hawaiian and social media influencer who’s happily riding his groundswell of popularity to the top. his extremely likable persona is a magnet for major brands that are looking for that magic combination of sincerity, charisma and off-the-chart good looks — with a silly side. Burbage started skateboarding at the age of seven, taught by his homeschooling mom on the island of oahu. he’s also an avid surfer, splitting his time between both sports, while using his impressive camera skills to launch a worldwide video and film production career. Burbage manages to deftly blend the various brands he represents with his adventurous lifestyle, turning what would otherwise be an obvious marketing pitch into a “hey, if he uses that drink to keep him hydrated … then I need that too” type of coveted response from any one of his 117k followers. Click. Buy. Bingo! Brands are happy, and Burbage gets a paycheck. are you jealous yet? Yet despite his relatively quick success, the selfeffacing Burbage is not all that driven, at least not in the typical sense. he still lives in his van on the

beach in Venice and finds his greatest satisfaction in having a tight-knit group of friends — and family. that’s the hawaiian way, which explains his answer to the question, “What big dream would you still like to fulfill?” “to be a father — i really want to be a dad,” Burbage replies without skipping a beat. “of course,” he adds, “first i need to find that wife with a heart of gold.” as to how he found success, Burbage claims that it just kind of “came while doing what i love to do.” meanwhile, in between surfing, skating and shooting, he’s launching a non-profit that will tap big companies for products that he and his team can distribute to needy kids in the countries where he works. “i don’t want to just travel around having fun, taking selfies and promoting a fantasy lifestyle — where you take all the beauty and experiences a country has to give, and yet give nothing back. that’s just wrong to me.” girls, looking for that cute guy with a heart of gold? You may have just found him. But first you’ll have to pry him out of his ocean-side bachelor van. H

soleil errico The sylph-like surfer. “You can watch her on the shore, standing by the ocean’s roar.” every day, for three to five hours, seventeen-year-old Soleil errico strides to the ocean’s edge to do what she’s done since she was seven years old: ride the waves on her longboard. there is, perhaps, no lovelier a sight than a tall, California blonde “walking” a longboard with trained technical precision, while seemingly weightless, moving in seamless symmetry with the waves. this isn’t your fast-moving, acrobatic shortboard surf experience — it’s poetry in motion. others simply call it “the flow.” to date, errico holds more than 12 surfing titles, including uSa Surfing 2017 Women’s Longboard national Champion. her home surf break is first point malibu, where she lives part of the year with her parents and two younger sisters who, she laments, “aren’t really into surfing.” the rest of the year, she surfs in kauai where the erricos have their secondary residence, aka a sweet slice of paradise. errico practices what is known as progressive longboarding, a style that differs from the more popular shortboarding — the latter being a speedier, “hit the lip” kind of experience vs. the mellow,

balletic movements of the longboarder. (think gene kelly vs. fred astaire.) Word on the waves is that there is can be a palatable tension between shortboarders and longboarders, with the former group known to get verbally territorial if a longboarder starts to surf on “their” turf. (kind of like a hip hopper yelling at a ballet dancer.) Why the hostility? “they think we’re kooks,” says errico. Currently, Soleil is part of the 2018 relik™ modern + Classic Longboard World tour. part surfing movement and part competitive sporting event, relik’s sole aim is to celebrate the art and lifestyle of longboard surfing by gathering its top performers at the world’s best surf breaks — ultimately building community around the sub culture and lifestyle of longboard surfing. it’s a culture that the malibu teenager is happy to embrace on her way to winning the world title in longboard surfing. that’s her aim, anyway. You can watch errico and her fellow relik World tour competitors surf during their next competition from September 8-18 at the Lower trestles surfing spot in San Clemente. it’s a dance you won’t want to miss. Mady Richards When they say, “Jump!” … she says, “How far?” With 2020 olympic gold now in her sights, former uSC long jumper mady richards knows a thing or two about suffering disappointments on your way to achieving your dreams. in 2016, while a sophomore, she broke her fibula — a “chicken bone” crack that was heard round the track. that injury derailed her career for almost a year. then there was the revolving door of coaches, forcing richards to adjust to a new coach almost every year. in a sport where technique is a huge component of training and where each coach has a different method, the once-reticent richards was forced to become her own advocate. through it all, she learned the power of faith, perseverance and discipline, as well as when — and whom — to ask for help. this inter-dependence includes a sports psychologist, coaches and even training partners who are likely to become competitors at the next track meet. to keep her eyes on the prize, no matter how many setbacks she may experience, richards uses a vision board — along with a sticky note on which she’s written bullet points of what she wants to accomplish. “every time i come and go from my room, i can visually see those goals,” explains richards. “and that helps me with my motivation — causing me to reflect on those choices i’m making throughout the day.” despite her numerous setbacks, richards has accomplished a lot, winning many coveted long jump titles. But she wants people to know that it’s not because she’s some sort of “genetic freak” who

was super gifted from the get-go. “i’m just an average person blessed with a modicum of genetic ability who has had to fight really hard to overcome a lot of adversity,” says richards. “Whatever i’ve accomplished, it’s through perseverance. as someone once said, ‘a river cuts through a rock not because of its power, but its persistence.’” ❖

Cities WITHIN A CITY BY

SCOTT HARRIS

as i was researching for this column, i also found a spot that is new to me — Little ethiopia, located only a couple of minutes from the Los angeles County museum of art. one of the newer enclaves, it was established in 2004 and is only a block long, but growing. Should you find yourself in the echo park area, you can stop and visit historic filipinotown, where everything from the philippines is celebrated and where you can find one of our country’s oldest Catholic churches, the St. Columban filipino Church. and koreatown, a hot spot for bars and clubs that is now world-renowned for its food scene, does it all with a korean flair. if we had more space, i could also tell you a bit about Little arabia, Little Bangladesh (now on my list!), peru Village, pico-robertson (Jewish culture), Leimert park (africanamerican art and culture), Sonoratown, greek town, Little Saigon, oaxacatown, and on, and on, and on. Suffice it to say, if there’s a part of the world you want to experience and a trip there isn’t in your short-term plans, somewhere in Southern California there is a neighborhood that embraces, celebrates and highlights the culture you are curious about. for all of these different ethnic and cultural spots, it is well worth doing a little research in advance and seeing which holidays are being celebrated and when the festive parades are taking place. ese events always bring out the most color and flavor and make a fun visit even more special. So jump in your car, take a bus or call an uber, and start your international travel today — no passport required. ❖

NTERNATIONAL TRAVEL IS FUN, EXCITING AND

I

invigorating. it is also time-consuming and expensive — unless you happen to live in, or be visiting, Southern California. if you are fortunate enough to be here, and are inclined to explore, you have a variety of different cultures right at your fingertips. never been to China? no problem. We’ll bring China to you. Chinatown is located in downtown Los angeles and has been since the 1800s. With the shops, the language, the smells and the sights, it is easy to believe you’ve flown thousands of miles, rather than driven a short distance. and when you’re done with Chinatown, if you find yourself with a hankering for a taquito and a margarita, it’s a short walk to olvera Street, where you can find mexican restaurants, music and shops, both authentic and romanticized. keep on walking and you may find yourself in Little tokyo, a center for Japanese culture, festivals, events and my favorite — some of the best sushi in the world. armenia can be a little difficult to travel to in today’s political environment, but for a taste of all that is armenian, SoCal offers up Little armenia, right next to hollywood. Since the 1970s, it’s been developing into an armenian ethnic hub, and for something different, it’s well worth a visit. and, mirroring Chinatown, Little tokyo and olvera Street in terms of proximity, you can walk from Little armenia to ai town, where the borders are marked with statues and streets are lined with religious shrines.

GLORIA OHMAN LYMAN

While people around the world may only associate Southern California with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood or the laid back attitude of sunny San Diego, SoCal has so much more to offer. Just outside of its celebrated urban centers, it is a rugged place, a place of extremes, with hot red rock deserts, cold water Pacific islands with wild kelp beds, and snow capped mountain peaks. At least, that’s how I see Southern California. How do you see it? We want to know! We at Southern California Life magazine are devoted to showing you all that it has to offer. We’ll close each issue showcasing the beauty of our region with its landscapes and landmarks. And we want you, our readers, to participate.
