HILE THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE RESERVE travel for the summer months, this issue of Weekend Escapes explores vacationing through the spring season. Certainly, there are pros to summer getaways, the most obvious being not having to yank the kids out of school, but quick escapes can happen anytime of the year and can sometimes be much more refreshing. Vacation days are peppered throughout the year and with strategic planning, long weekend trips can be a wonderful way to take an invigorating break. There are numerous advantages to off-season travel: Prices are generally less than they are when it’s busy, there are fewer tourists invading your leisure space and you don’t have to be in a perpetual state of either steaming or roasting. There are some destinations that may be trendy spots in the summertime but also have much to offer in spring. For instance, many believe the best time to travel to Costa Rica is between December and March. Our special Costa Rica section featured on page 68 outlines three of the best places to visit in that magnificent part of the world. And a big bonus is that you can pull off a great trip there and back in four days or less (yes, we’ve done it!). Frequent voyages are good for the soul and it’s a wonderful way for kids to learn about our amazing planet. So, read through this issue, choose a destination that piques your interest, take a look at your calendar and call your travel agent. You can thank us when you return happy and rejuvenated.

MONIQUE REIDY

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

GIRLS GO GLAMPING

SURELY YOU’VE HEARD ABOUT IT BY NOW, and maybe you’ve pictured yourself trying it: glamping. A rustic tent cabin with a plush-but-firm bed awaits you in a wooded forest, with high-thread count sheets and soft, wooly blankets. It’s not your mother’s camping trip (or should I say father’s?) — no smelly sleeping bag and air mattress that tends to deflate after a couple of hours. This is luxurious, glamourous camping: the perfect contrast to sleeping on the ground for a few nights just to get a little fresh air in your system. As you might have guessed, I’m not a super enthusiastic camper. I’ve done my share of camping so that my daughter will have those camping memories of waking up to birds singing and lighting a campfire (while her mom tries not to complain too much and spoil everything). But glamping always struck me as an attractive possibility, with just a touch of too good to be trueness in the (fresh) air. bb

YOU HAVE YOUR CHOICE OF “GLAMPSITES.” FOR A ROMANTIC VISIT OR EVEN A GIRLS’ GETAWAY FOR TWO, THE CLASSIC TENTS (12-BY-14 FEET) ARE ROOMY, HOMEY, AND A HUGE IMPROVEMENT FROM OUR OLD GIRL SCOUT TENTS (NOW THOROUGHLY RIPPED UP).

So naturally, when Mendocino Grove invited me to write about its spot high above the ocean, I knew my opportunity was here, and I thought about my now-grown daughter, and the equation came out like this: Girls Go Glamping! Will I sleep through the night? Will I awake with dawn’s early light? (I do like to sleep in a little, so this is not a plus.) Will I long for the new organic mattress I just purchased for my bedroom at home? Will I be warm enough? (A constant question.) And of course: Will my daughter and I still be speaking after glamping together for a few days? Mendocino Grove: Modern Camping

The beach, or should I say beaches. Whether you’re a sun lover or a beachcomber, Mendocino has you covered. We spent hours at Glass Beach, and while reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor may warn that there’s no glass left, just keep looking. I discovered I can spend endless amounts of time searching for the rare piece of blue and red hidden beneath the piles of black and white. bb

your floor and rugs tidy should you be that kind of person. (Honestly, I only swept once in three nights — I got over it fast.) Stop in town at Harvest Market at Mendosa’s for supplies to cook up camp dinner (including freshly made specialties and a solid selection of fine wines), or BYO. My daughter whipped up gluten-free quesadillas in a pan over the fire she built. You can purchase very inexpensive local wood at the camp office for your fire. Even better, when you make your reservation, order a camp box, which Mendocino Grove fills with a country-style tablecloth, set of plates, drinking glasses, mugs, bowls, eating and cooking utensils, paper towels, salt and pepper, plus a fry pan and pot — pretty much everything you may have forgotten to bring, and really don’t need to. We also picked up a s’mores kit from camp, filled with fresh graham crackers, puffy marshmallows, plenty of chocolate, and well-built skewers for after dinner, which never comes fast enough. You do have to wash your own dishes at the sinks, I’m afraid. But well-tended cooking stations (featuring handsome gas barbecues) are located throughout the area so you can grill with ease. Any time of day, the meadow in the center of Mendocino Grove beckons with a great campfire surrounded by relaxing Adirondack chairs (and blankets). This is the place to kick back and get a cup of coffee or tea. Choose from a variety of excellent teas the owners hand pick — which during our stay included ginger, white tea, Earl Gray, and their special herbal “Dandy Blend.” Vegans will appreciate the variety of milks available (almond, soy, regular, and more). In the mornings, feast on a light breakfast of yogurt, healthy snack bars, and fruits. And take an apple for later — glamping makes you hungry.

Spring 2019 I

Or so the website claims, and it’s true. We found the place pretty easily by following the directions sent to us after we registered. We drove up the curvy road to the top of the hill to reach the check-

in tent — and some pretty awesome trees. Then, it was off to our own campsite. Mendocino Grove is well-set up at first look — and a detailed tour shows that husband-and-wife owners Teresa Raffo and Chris Hougie have put some serious thought into the 36-acre property — along with a lot of plain-old hard work. Mendocino Grove is flourishing. You have your choice of “glampsites.” For a romantic visit or even a girls’ getaway for two, the Classic Tents (12-by-14 feet) are roomy, homey, and a huge improvement from our old Girl Scout tents (now thoroughly ripped up). The sturdy, light tents all sit on firm wooden foundations (so there’s no bumpy patches of earth to deal with at all). Inside, you’ll find an inviting bed with down-filled comforters and rustic wool blankets. Family tents (16-by-20 feet) have a comfy big bed, plus additional bunkbeds (for the family, of course, or how about even more girls for your girls’ getaway?). Features vary but include nightstands, a solid-yet-small desk to write on (postcards are provided gratis, another wonderful small detail Mendocino Grove doesn’t forget to include). Our tent had a couple of chairs, a chest at the front of the bed, a coat rack I covered with the variety of coats I’d brought (plus hats) for staying warm even in the summer, and more. There are also night lamps and you can plug in your phones for recharging, along with your computer if you just had to bring it — but try not to. Larger tents come with dressers and drawers for all your kids’ socks. You’ll also find your own high-power lantern — which may easily become your new best friend. That is, if it weren’t for the heated mattress pads, with his-and-hers, or hersand-hers, controls. This, I believe, is what Edison originally had in mind for electricity. Even in July, it was chilly at night (okay, 50s). My daughter heated her side up to 5 before bed. I put mine at 17. I have rarely been this happy. Rest assured, you won’t want to spend all your time in bed. Each site comes with a picnic table and fire pit. Ours had a long wonderful log that set us apart from the rest of the world (I liked to think) and a view of the ocean and coastal trees. Everything smelled good, inside and out. And the tent was clean – as in your mother’s clean. There’s even a little broom to keep

MENDOCINO GROVE.”

There are also paths to take you to more interesting spots during low tide, and plenty of other gold diggers to chat with as you while away a morning (or afternoon or evening, just saying). Stop by the Sea Glass Museum in nearby (and super friendly) Fort Bragg, where the owner will direct you to secret spots and share with you amazing sea glass history. Plus it’s free and on the way to the beach! Other must-sees include Mission Gulch State Park, where you can hike to a waterfall; Mendocino Headlands Trail, a simple trail along the bluff; and my favorite, Black Sand Beach in Fort Bragg, where you can truly lay back under blue skies and enjoy the view of blue waves (on silky black sand with tiny pebbles). Do stop at the enchanting

Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, a 47-acre explosion of flowers, which has a great plant shop and a little café perfect for lunch. The parking lot is nearly full for good reason. Tired of campfire food? Locals recommend a number of in-town (as in just down the road) cafés: There’s the Mendocino Café with deck seating and Thai-inspired cuisine; Mendocino Hotel for upscale bistro fare and California wines; and Café Beaujolais for refined seasonal dining. We also loved casual Frankie’s for divine pizza. When you’re in Fort Bragg, you’ll never find a nicer place than Headlands Coffeehouse, where we had scrumptious quiche and enchiladas, and were treated to a jazz quartet and the nicest people

ever. I saw plates of dreamy tiramisu whisk by, too. And stop by Cowlick’s for handmade ice cream. Though the locals advised us to try the mushroom flavor, which they swore was sweet and one of a kind, I recommend the black raspberry chocolate chunk. They had me at black raspberry. Somewhere in all this, rent yourself a canoe at Catch a Canoe, just across the street from Mendocino Grove. Catering to families, pets, beginners, and major league adventurers, they’ll set you up with an ultra-stable redwood outrigger or canoe so you can explore the Big River up close, and watch the birds nest high in the trees. On our trip, a couple of seals and river otters greeted us with smiles and upturned tummies. Do not miss this memorable highlight to any visit to Mendocino — then head back to the grove and your welcoming campsite to finish off your trip — maybe with a bottle of wine you picked up in town, or at least a s’more or two. You’ve earned it after all that rowing, which will give you the greatest appreciation of peaceful Mendocino. d

“IF YOU’D RATHER LOOK — NOT LEAP — INTO THE BEAUTIFUL DEEP BLUE SEA, SPECIFICALLY TO SET YOUR SIGHT ON SURFERS, THEN HEAD ON OVER TO THE

SANTA CRUZ SURF MUSEUM at Lighthouse Point.”

IN THE SUMMER OF 1885, FOG-WEARY RESIDENTS OF SAN FRANCISCO began climbing aboard “Suntan Special” excursion trains to escape to a sunny oasis known as Santa Cruz. Today, even Southlanders are flocking to this ideal weekend getaway spot. A quick plane ride to San Jose and a short scenic ride over the hill lands you in counterculture central — a hip-in-a-hippie-sort-of-way small town where you can hike through a nearby mythical, Tolkienesque redwood forest, take a scenic bike ride along the coast or through the woods, and dive right in to surf or paddleboard with the dolphins. And that’s just for starters. “Gee, you’re swell!”

If you’d rather look — not leap — into the beautiful deep blue sea, specifically to set your sight on surfers, then head on over to the Santa Cruz Surf Museum at Lighthouse Point. This unassuming

When it comes to food, Santa Cruz is a cornucopia of culinary excellence — including numerous bakeries, one of which (Kelly’s Bakery) may just have the best chicken pot pie anywhere. Fine dining choices abound, including the spacious and casual chic Soif Restaurant and Wine Bar. Delectable and unusual entrees such as squid fettuccine and grilled quail with salsa verde will please any discriminating palate. Farm-to-table is a symbiotic necessity for chefs who frequently make the rounds in the area’s top seven farmer’s markets. They’re a must-visit for Southlanders, as well. bb

For more sedate activities with an educational component, you’ll want to visit the spectacular Seymour Marine Discovery Center. Here, you can get touchy-feely with a swell shark, gaze at undulating jellyfish and see what a pacific spiny — pardon the language — lumpsucker looks like. Seymour may be small, but you’ll see more marine life than you might expect in this glassed-in marine science center — including migrant Southlander crabs who apparently also decided that leaving SoCal for “CenCal” was a good idea. For those wanting to walk on the wild side, the nearby Natural Bridges State Beach is pure nirvana. Besides being home to one of the largest overwintering monarch butterfly sites in California, the park also hosts specially protected migratory birds and rich tide-pool sea life. It’s also a popular place to windsurf, fly kites, bike, run, surf or just enjoy a picnic by the bay.

brick building houses a wall-to-wall pictorial displaying 150 years of surfing history, including — ouch! — shark-bitten wetsuits. Lots of local surfing heroes are immortalized here — from big-wave rider Jay Moriarty to wetsuit legend Jack O'Neil. While there, enjoy the eclectic assortment of street performers, then stop to admire the grisly old surfers hanging out in their beat-up buses or vanquished vans. It’s all part of that groovy Santa Cruz vibe. And speaking of vibes … you’ll find more concentrated quirkiness in Santa Cruz’s downtown area than just about anywhere else in California. Where else can you walk down the street and spy a store devoted to tie-dye “everything,” thriving indie bookstores and more than a few oddly decorated vans and cars — all in a mandated nuclearfree zone? Adding to the downtown hippie “aura” are all the interesting bearded and bedraggled characters that roam the streets — though some of them might just be trustfund college students. In “forever 60s” Santa Cruz, it’s hard to tell the difference. Not into tie-dye? Not to worry — keeping with its lofty real estate prices, there’s plenty of highend boutique shopping in Santa Cruz, as well.

While you can’t pack a peck of pickled peppers or carry your kale onboard, you can pick up farm-toplane items like salamis and cheeses, fresh almond butter or one of Santa Cruz’s famous pies. Another draw to these popular outdoor markets is their live music and some of the best food truck fare anywhere. “Easily the best bakery I have experienced outside of France.”

When you’re ready to explore the rest of the county, head on down to Capitola for another must-stop eatery: Gayle’s Bakery & Rosticceria. Gayle’s isn’t just a bakery — it’s an experience, offering more food than you could possibly salivate over in a week. This local favorite is the queen of comfort food, offering staples such as meatloaf, creamy mac and cheese and the best bacon and egg crois-

sant anywhere. And if you love baked goods, ranging from tangy key lime pie to yippee-ki-yay cowboy cookies, then Gayle’s just might become your next best foodie friend. After grabbing your goodies at Gayle’s, continue down to the Annieglass Production Studio and Store in Watsonville. Annie’s work is so exquisite, her pieces are housed in the Smithsonian. No doubt, you’ll want to house her high-end creations in your casa as well. The good news is that Annieglass sells their “seconds” for a song. When you’re thirsty for more fun, or just plain thirsty, enjoy a drink from Annie’s Wine & Craft Beer Bar, or West Cliff Inn

migrate across the street to the S. Martinelli & Company store. Stroll through time to see how Martinelli’s began their apple empire 150 years ago, then sit on a bar stool and enjoy a complimentary tasting of seven surprising apple juice blends before heading back to your hotel. Back at the hotel …

Santa Cruz offers a bevy of traditional and bed-and-breakfast hotel options, including the West Cliff Inn that combines historic charm with spacious rooms and spectacular views. Take advantage of West Cliff’s free loaner bikes that will have you out the door and biking the three-mile West Cliff Drive bicycle path in seconds. With its stunning backdrop of rolling ocean waves and dramatic cliffs, you'll wish it were longer. With its sheer spectacular beauty, diverse landscapes, fabulous food, and invigorating outdoor activities for all fitness levels, Santa Cruz is a must-visit destination. While it may be too “out there” for some, most visitors to this shining jewel by the sea are captivated by the color and verve that makes Santa Cruz what it is … beguiling and unique. d

N THE CENTRAL COAST HALFWAY BETWEEN LOS ANGELES AND SAN FRANCISCO is the small, laid-back seaside town of Pismo Beach, population just over 8,000. Its newly-rebuilt pier, long stretches of white sand beaches, panoramic ocean views from the beachfront and cliff-top settings, romantic hotels, downtown wine tasting rooms, restaurants, the Premium Outlets and shops are all situated within a vibrant natural habitat. With its unhurried, welcoming, petfriendly vibe, the ambience is reminiscent of days past when jeeps bounced randomly over dunes with sand flying in every direction, dogs ran freely in the surf, boom boxes and books were on every blanket, baby oil was the preferred tanning aid, and random evening bonfires, burnt marshmallows, and songfests were the norm. Today, Pismo Beach blends the best of past and present. You can watch dolphins playing alongside your tour boat, migrating whales breaching and splashing, sea otters sunning, seagulls swooping, pelicans diving, and other birds darting about in the clear ocean air. Pet parents apply sun block to their leashed dogs and arrange surfing lessons for Fido and Fiona. Families and friends still gather to tan, swim, surf, paddleboard, drive ATVs across the dunes, and enjoy a bonfire

and s'mores in designated locations or a cup of clam chowder while meandering along the new 1200-foot-long pier. Unchanged are the magnificent endless vistas, quiet sunrises, blazing sunsets, and lack of unnecessary formalities. Things to Do

ATVs are a familiar sight on the sand.

Exploring the tidepools is a favorite family activity.

In addition to all the water sports, you can rent bikes to explore the promenade, town and surrounding landscapes, hike along the many scenic trails, and take in the views at a dozen of the town's spectacular 16 parks including Spyglass, a family favorite just off Shell Beach Road. Set on four-and-a half acres, it has access to over a mile of pristine beach and tide pools, seating areas, a large children's playground, and picnic tables with handicapped access. Dinosaur Caves Park is one of the largest at 11 prime acres on a high bluff overlooking the Pacific with uninterrupted views in every direction. It's the perfect romantic setting where you and your significant other can fully immerse yourselves in the magic of the moment when the blazing orange sky fades to deep blue as the sun disappears into the horizon. It's also a popular locale for many of the city's renowned festivals. Palisades Park is a great choice for families with its BBQ area, basketball court, tennis courts, children's playground, and handicapped parking. For golfers, the 9-hole Pismo Beach Golf Course is suitable for players of all levels and is perfect for practicing your short game. Nearby 18-hole public courses and country clubs include Cypress Ridge, Avila Beach, Monarch Dunes and about a dozen more. For nature lovers, land options include horseback riding, ATV rides, biking, great hiking trails, and more. For water sports, there are equipment rentals and lessons for surfing, swimming and even surfing classes for your four-legged beach friend. For humans, there’s SUPs, paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking, parasailing, jet skiing, boat rentals, charters, cruises, and plenty of fishing options afloat and ashore are available. Pismo Beach is also a popular seasonal destination for the monarch butterflies. Just south is Monarch Butterfly Grove, a quiet estuary and home to these colorful migrating California butterflies November-February. In addition to various tours to the grove during monarch season, Pismo Beach's California Western Monarch Day is a major event celebrated at the grove each February.

Food, Wine, and Lodgings

Widely known for its seasonal clams and legendary clam chowder, Pismo Beach offers a wide variety of excellent clam dishes celebrated by three frequently-decorated giant clam statues welcoming visitors. Clam Island, the most photographed, stands at the south entrance to the city just off the 101 at Price Street and Ocean View Avenue. The other two are off Highway 1 on Dolliver Street — one next to the Visitor Information Center and the other fronting the Pismo Coast Village RV Resort. Farm-to-table and fresh seafood are the basis for most eateries ranging from snacks to fine dining.

“LOCATED NEAR THE EMERGING WINE CENTERS

OF EDNA VALLEY AND PASO ROBLES,

Pismo has a number of local wine tasting venues within the city and is a great base for visits to the vineyards.” The emerging wine centers of Edna Valley and Paso Robles offer excellent vineyard visits and tastings.

Many hotels, restaurants and beach settings are pet friendly.

Popular spots include Splash Café by the pier with its award-winning clam chowder; Flagship, one of the newest family-friendly spots with a great menu and spectacular ocean views; and Pismo Fish and Chips which has been providing some of the best fish and chips in town for more than 30 years. Located near the emerging wine centers of Edna Valley and Paso Robles, Pismo Beach has a number of local wine tasting venues within the city and is a great base for visits to the vineyards. If you prefer not to drive while sampling the grapes, there are excellent tours to maximize your safety and enjoyment. Accommodations range from RV resorts and budget rentals to Pismo's newest luxury hotel, Inn at the Pier. This upscale craftsman-style oceanfront property features 104 boutique guest rooms and first-class amenities found in a luxurious beach house. The city also has a number of pet-friendly properties including Sea Crest Ocean Front Hotel with its five-acre lawn and direct beach access. There are also many pet-friendly restaurants. With so many stunning settings with unforgettable views, Pismo Beach is also a highly sought-after wedding destination. One of the most exquisite venues is the Chapman Estate in Shell Beach with its beautiful gardens and breathtaking views. Nearby are dozens of fine hotels to accommodate overnight guests. PORTLAND HAS ITS OWN VIBE — THIS IS NO SECRET. But what may not be realized is that a few days there, and it sucks you into this vibe — and you realize the sense of community. Local breweries sell their own brews found nowhere else. Local artisans and makers design goods and wares, which are purchased by residents to support each other. The renowned chefs create with locally sourced food. There’s no other place like it in the U.S. and that makes it worth the travel. But be warned, there are not enough days to get it all done.

IF HORSES AND THE OUTDOORS ARE YOUR THING, then a visit to Vista Verde Ranch may turn out to be one of your favorite getaways. This is not just any dude ranch – it’s what you get when luxury mingles with recreation and produces an unforgettable experience. Set in Clark, Colorado, 25 miles north of Steamboat Springs, Vista Verde Ranch sits on 540 acres within Colorado’s Routt National Forest. Although it’s generally a challenge to find a destination conducive to both a perfect family trip as well as a romantic retreat, this unique haven easily fits that bill. The moment visitors arrive at the long driveway, the magic of Vista Verde Ranch unfolds. During the winter, snow covers all visible terrain, and in the distance a dozen cabins pepper the hillside. To the left is open space where more than 100 spectacular horses of assorted colors and sizes graze while awaiting their daily marching orders. Vista Verde Ranch boasts 12 private log cabins with hot tubs on each deck and three lodge rooms, each with a private balcony. This all-inclusive destination combines the key elements of a fabulous vacation: Delicious homemade meals, cozy mountain cabins, breathtaking 360-degree views and invigorating adventures. With a one-to-one staffto-guest ratio, Vista Verde Ranch guests experience service beyond measure. The young, energetic staff, consisting of ranch hands, wranglers, chefs, and activity directors, is eager to help guests feel at home. The staff come from all walks of life, and most live on the property in cabins at the foot of the property. In a program designed to teach them incomparable hospitality and service, they live in community and run the facility with a golden attitude and meticulous care. They are friendly and knowledgeable about the property and the varied activities. Vista Verde’s Executive Chef Cholly McGlynn and her creative and experienced chefs are known for classic “cowboy cuisine.” The homemade food is delicious and made to order, and special dietary needs are easily accommodated. Guests enjoy meals together in the dining room, often joined by staff. Meals range from gourmet cookouts to formal plated entrees, and wine is offered every evening. Summer activities include horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, rock climbing, paddle boarding, rafting, photography workshops,

yoga, cooking classes and wine tasting. Winter fun consists of cross country skiing (track, backcountry, skate), snowshoeing, horseback riding, sleigh rides, tubing, photography workshops, yoga, cooking classes and wine tasting. Special kids’ programs help maximize the vacation experience for children (ages 6 –10) and tweens (ages 1113) with activities that are fully supervised and age-appropriate. Winter activities include horseback riding, campfires, hiking, skiing, sleigh rides, sledding and more. Teens also have an array of activities, like teen-only movie nights and camp outs in the summer. The Teen program is offered only in the summertime, but teens are welcome to join the kids’ activities in the winter months. A repeat clientele is a testament to the staff’s incomparable ability to make guests feel like family. In addition, the

Ranch is seasonally distinct, so visits at different times of the year can be unique in terms of the events and activities. Frequent guest, Jill Ericksen of New York City, has been a Vista Verde Ranch guest more than 21 times. “My husband Cory and I have made dear and

long-term friends at Vista Verde Ranch and we often vacation at the same time just to meet and spend time together here,” she says. One feature remains consistent at every visit: Guests receive the utmost in fun and service, and always leave with another memorable experience under their belt! VISITING LĀNA`I: LUXURY AND YESTERYEAR

Lāna`i offers a unique, luxurious retreat experience

BY BRIDGET MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF FOUR SEASONS LĀNA`I

Spring 2019 I WEEKEND ESCAPES

I 47

ONCE ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST pineapple plantations, the smallest island of Hawaii, Lāna`i, is still home to 3,000 proud residents. Full of undisturbed landmarks, there are remnants of villages past, Petroglyphs and history throughout the island. Yet, Lāna`i offers a modern, luxurious retreat experience. In 2012, Larry Ellison took 98 percent ownership of the 140-square-mile island and revamped the Four Seasons Lāna`i (with a seven-month closing for a complete remodel); it is the island’s only resort and offers all of the amenities for what some travel outlets have called the best Four Seasons in the world (the Ali’i

Royal Suite, in the $21,000-a-night range, is the ultimate splurge). Staying on Lāna`i feels like you’ve been let in on a secret about a secluded island all your own. The resort overlooks Hulopo’e Bay and provides 213 guest rooms and suites with all the modern technology touches such as intuitive lighting and temperature, with striking decor throughout. Wristband keys make sure no one is ever locked out. With the two worlds of luxury and history colliding, it creates a dichotomy of experience. The Four Seasons Lāna`i is ultimate luxury but when venturing out through the island, the town is as yesteryear as ever. With no stoplights,

traffic or fast food restaurants, the buildings and streets that were all built between 1924 and 1929, when the island’s Dole pineapple plantation was flourishing, still stand today. Lounging by the pool is bliss. However, the hotel offers jeeps and UTVs and the staff is happy to help you find your way to excursions if desired. There is no shortage of activities on this little island. SEE & DO • Ka Lōkāhi Church. On the grounds

of the resort, this public church built in 1930 for the families in the area offers services in both English and Hawaiian. bb

Hole 12, where a par 3 starts on a tee box situated 150-feet-abovethe-sea cliff.”

Cats? Yes, guests can volunteer to take in some cat therapy (known as Lāna`i’s lions) while giving back to the community. • Keōmoku Village. For a history lesson from last century, this deserted old settlement village is where the remains of Kahalepalaoa Wharf and Landing from 1899 and other treasures can be viewed. • Kaunolū Village. In another village deserted as residents migrated upland on the island, southern sea cliffs and Moku Noio cove (looks like a shark fin) are just off to the side of the ruins of the oncethriving village. What is left standing has been called the most extensive and best preserved old buildings in the state. • Lāna`i Cat Sanctuary.

The pictures of boats, animals and other markings, including depictions of ancient gods, date back to the 1790s. There are several spots on the island to view them. The hotel offers a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) tour that allows for viewing; some hiking trails offer viewings as well. • Four Seasons Spa. What kind of vacation is a vacation without at least one trip to the spa? Of course, Four Seasons Lāna`i doesn’t disappoint. • Petroglyphs.

• Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) ride.

Not to be missed, this is an adventurous island tour. Escorted with an experienced driver, the protective jumpsuit will save your clothes (and the helmet

will save neck and above), but be sure to pack old shoes because the red volcano mineral soil flies up as you soar on the trails around the island. Worth every bit of time spent on laundry. GOLF The Signature Jack Nicklaus Manele Golf Course is one of the premier 18hole layouts in Hawaii. The Four Seasons Lāna`i course is home to the famous Hole 12, where a par 3 starts on a tee box situated 150-feet-above-the-sea cliff. The adjacent cliff hosts the green 200 feet across the water. Bill and Melinda Gates wed at Hole 12 with the stunning scenery as the perfect wedding backdrop.

An hour from the resort, it is often a day trip for those visiting Maui, nine miles across the water. Silky white sand and coconut groves provide the backdrop for picnics on land or snorkeling and scuba diving in the sea. • Kahalepaloaoa.

HIKING • Kānepu‘u Preserve. The 462-acres is

home to 48 native species and a self-guided hike offers the chance to see the last remaining dry land forest on the island. • Koloiki Ridge Hike. The five-mile trail leads to Koloiki Ridge and opens up to a beautiful sightseeing excursion. Munro Trail. To see canyons to rainforests, this 16-mile trail is for those who don’t shy away from adventure. • Keālia Kapu-Kaunolū Heritage Trail. A quick one-mile hike shows off

• Kaiolohia Beach (Shipwreck Beach). With ruins of an old light-

house, the eight-mile strip of sand is a destination spot for photos. Kaiolohia means rough seas and here exotic shells, beach glass and driftwood find their way to land. • Polihua Beach. Once a spot for nesting sea turtles, Polihua means “cove for eggs.” The two miles of white sand is for sunning or picnicking, with rough seas making it less ideal for swimming. • Keahiakawelo. It’s called Garden of the Gods and often described as a “walk on the moon” and “spiritual” with a variety of lava boulders on colored soil from the minerals of the volcano creating the ambiance.

EAT & DRINK • Nobu Lāna`i. It’s about dining cliffside while overlooking a protected marine preserve and enjoying Nobu quality. • One Forty. Named for the island’s 140- square-mile radius, this is the spot for a breakfast buffet in the morning and grilled steak at night. • Malibu Farm. Local, organic ingredients are turned into salads, sandwiches and other lunch fare, with cocktails on hand. • Views. Located at the golf course, this is another lunch spot for an afternoon break. Dishes include Hulopo’e Bay Prawn BLT. A locally brewed Bikini Blonde can be the drink of choice. • The Lobby Lounge. A drink menu with an abundance of cocktails and wine in a luxurious lounge is a great setting to watch the sun go down. • The Sports Bar & Grill. IF

BLACK SAND BEACHES AND VIBRANT COLORED SUNSETS ARE YOUR IDEA OF A TROPICAL GETAWAY, COSTA RICA SHOULD RANK AT THE TOP OF YOUR PROVERBIAL BUCKET LIST. Surely you’ve heard how spectacular this country’s landscape is, since that seems to be the common gush of nearly everyone who has visited. If you haven’t been to this tropical destination, you may have thought this to be a slight exaggeration, but it’s not. Until you behold the flaming orange and purple sunsets and experiences the lush, majestic rainforest firsthand, it’s difficult to grasp Costa Rica’s splendor. Costa Rica is responsible for six percent of the world’s biodiversity and it’s a nation whose people are inclusive, gracious and kind. Here, the culture is much calmer, not surprising for a society that embraces the Pura Vida way of life — a country that is so peace-loving that it has no army. We feature three Costa Rican destinations that suit the most persnickety traveler: El Mangroove in Guanacaste, Tabacon Thermal Resort and Spa in La Fortuna, and if glamping is the favored getaway, KINKARA in the foothills of the Talamanca mountain range. While we’ve done our best, it’s important to realize that no photo, description or sentiment can do this tiny country justice and why a personal visit is an absolute travel must.

Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa is a rainforest experience like no other and for those who want to relish in the sheer exquisiteness of green surroundings, this is the place to be. Soaking in steaming thermal mineral springs while listening to the whispers of native wildlife is likely the closest experience to visiting paradise. Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa is located 75 miles from the capital city of San Jose, in the lush northern region of Arenal, Costa Rica. It’s situated near the small village of La Fortuna de San Carlos and about four miles from the majestic Arenal Volcano. Delivering the largest natural thermal mineral springs system in Costa Rica, Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa is acclaimed for promoting natural wellness. More than 20 pools and waterfalls are naturally heated by the Arenal volcano and water temperatures range from 75 to 105°farenheit. The Tabacón river feeds the thermal springs’ cascading waterfalls and they increase in warmth the closer they are to the Arenal Volcano. The high temperatures of the thermal springs allow dissolved solid minerals such as silica, calcium and lithium to exist in the water. These elements, which can be absorbed through the skin, are believed to relieve stress and ailments such as poor circulation and fatigue. The magnificent grounds of Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa are covered with vivid flowers, rushing streams and natural pools. The 103 eco-friendly guest rooms and suites are surrounded by the property’s breathtaking landscape and guest rooms have rainforest and garden views.
