SAFETY HARBOR KIDS’ 10TH ANNIVERSARY ON FRIDAY, MAY 19TH, Topa Mountain Winery hosted a concert and poker party fundraiser for nonprofit Safety Harbor Kids. The event was the charity’s 10th Anniversary and featured music by Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett, the legendary guitarists of the rock band Little Feat. Kicking off the event was vocal sensation Kirsten Collins with a beautiful performance of “Amazing Grace”, followed by the cool sounds of the Dan Grimm Band. The more than 350 guests enjoyed music throughout the day, while sipping wine and enjoying the spectacular view from the well manicured grounds of Topa Mountain Winery, owned and operated by proprietor Larry Gurero. In between music sets, the crowd was entertained by the Hamsa Bollywood Dancers. With security provided by Garnet Security, the VIP guests were treated to food by AJ’s Chinese Express (delivered by Ojai Food Taxi) and complimentary beverages including Topa Mountain Wines, Hint Water and Lori’s Lemonade. Additional refreshments for the event were provided by Charles and Company Tea and Longshot Expresso Bar. Guests also enjoyed a Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament sponsored by Aces and Eights. The poker tournament was won by Andrew MacCalla of Santa Barbara. Prizes included a Tesla for the weekend, a round of golf at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa and dinner at the Inn of the Seventh Ray. As the evening progressed, headliners Barrere and Tackett were joined by Little Feat bassist, Kenny Gradney, Grammy winning drummer, Tony Braunegal and guitar slayer, Coco Montoya, for their final set. Barrere and Tackett of Little Feat tour the world performing their popular songs including Little Feat’s favorite, “Dixie Chicken” and others. Tackett has played on many rock classics with artists including Jackson Browne, who sits on the Safety Harbor Kids board. Other businesses supporting the event included Ojai Community Bank, Southern California Life magazine, Rainbow Bridge, Bamboo Creek Spa, Deer Lodge, Ojai Business Center, Primavera Gallery, Glo Beauty, Ojai Horse Connection and Osteria Monte Grappa. Safety Harbor Kids is a 501c3 nonprofit with the mission to enrich the lives of orphans, foster and homeless children through education in the areas of college, career, music and the Arts. The charity has been serving teen foster children in Ojai, Ventura and the greater Los Angeles area since 2007. Visit www.safetyharborkids.org for more information.

ne of the most under-rated experiences in Southern California is travel by train, an adventure I experienced for the first time recently. It was wonderful not to have to fight traffic, to be able to take in the views of the beautiful SoCal Coastline, and thanks to the on-board Wi-Fi, I arrived feeling quite productive. To our neighbors in other metropolitan areas across the country, the train and public transportation in general is routine and widely used, but here in the Southland, we seem to like our cars. People are friendly on the train, unlike the frazzled, harried commuters stuck in traffic on the freeway. Train passengers seem to be more laid-back, realizing that there is not a single move they can make to cause the train to arrive sooner. And it’s a great way to see Southern California. Passing through residential neighborhoods, well-known landmarks and along the beach gave me a fresh perspective on our beautiful SoCal community. It was a great way to blanket nearly all of this region; from the Los Angeles area to San Diego and then back up to Santa Barbara, which happens to be the vast territory our publication covers. One of the reasons this magazine features so many photos is because we want readers to get a grasp of the Southland. This area is so diverse on many levels that just reading about a destination doesn’t quite cut it. But the next best thing to gazing at pictures is to actually get out and experience the featured activities. If you’re here for the summer, I recommend you hop on an Amtrak, and go see some of the sites that ranked in the top five of our SoCal Superstars on page 45. Take the whole family – the kids will likely enjoy the trek much more on the train than buckled up in a crowded car. Try to come across new locations and pursuits, so next year you can vote for your new-found favorites when our second SoCal Superstars competition comes back around. Wishing you a refreshing and fun-filled summer break as you go play outside and discover our amazing Southern California!

MEMORIAL COLISEUM BY
SHERYL NANCE-NASH
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is often called, “The Greatest Stadium in the World”. There’s plenty good reason for that. “It has a legacy that no other stadium can match in its totality,” says Joe Furin, General Manager of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The history is indeed rich. “The idea for what became the Coliseum came from city leaders who wanted a large gathering space for sports and community events. They had foresight and planned for a 78,000-seat stadium when the population was around 200,000. It was unprecedented to build a stadium that was about one third of the population,” says Furin. It was created to be a living memorial to all who served in the United States Armed Forces during World War I and to be an accessible venue for all to enjoy, with many free events. The Coliseum, with its Peristyle, consisting of the large center arch, six flanking arches on either side and a total of 24 columns, was modeled after the original Roman Colosseum. It took two years to complete the stadium that opened in 1923. It was finished on time and under the approximate $800,000 budget, which in itself was a feat. Furin also points out that it didn’t cost taxpayers a dime, as money was raised through grants.
T
he inaugural event was in July of 1923. The Motion Picture Association of America put on an exposition to show off all the good things about Hollywood, at a time when Hollywood had a black eye, with film stars like Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, in the headlines for scandals. There were screen tests, movies made on the grounds during the exposition, stars to meet every afternoon and evening, a nightly feature show and more. The first of many football games was played in October, where the University of Southern California bested Pomona College, 23-7. That would be the beginning of a legendary sports history. Unlike other stadiums that are nearly synonymous with one team like the Green Bay Packers’ Lambeau Field and the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Park, the Coliseum (and Sports Arena), over the years has been home turf for the USC Trojans, UCLA Bruins, the Rams, the Lakers, and the Dodgers, at some point. “Generations of families have come to the

Designated by Congress, May is known as "National Military Appreciation Month". As a symbol of unity, all U.S. citizens are encouraged to honor the service and sacrifice of both active members and veterans of the Armed Forces.
Known as "The Greatest Stadium in the World", the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is a living memorial to all who served in the United States Armed Forces during World War I.
On June 9, 1945, as part of a "Welcome Home" tour, Gen. George S. Patton Jr. and Lt. Gen. James Doolittle were the guests of honor at a ceremony held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Beginning the day with a parade throughout the city, which yielded nearly one million Angelenos in attendance, the event was led by master of ceremony, comedian Jack Benny, and kicked off with Judy Garland singing "God Bless America". The evening consisted of vivid reenactments of actual battles, complete with tanks, B-25 war planes, and actors in military uniforms; a musical variety show; readings by legendary members of the Hollywood community, such as Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis; and a spectacular light show to honor the fallen soldiers who gave their lives to protect and serve the United States of America.
In a rather charming bit of irony, Knievel also filmed a motorcycle safety film shot contemporaneously at the Coliseum entitled "Not So Easy," narrated by Peter Fonda, who had himself gained iconic status in biker culture as writer and star of the 1969 blockbuster "Easy Rider."

Hollyhock House
4800 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles www.barnsdall.org/hollyhock-house/tours Why it’s historic: Built nearly a century ago, it represents famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s inaugural project in Los Angeles. It belonged to socially conscious heiress Aline Barnsdall, who named the house after her favorite flower (hollyhock). Why you should visit it: In addition to the house and gardens, there are many cool sights and sounds in the nearby Barnsdall Art Park. These include wine-tastings, a revolving door of interesting art galleries, and movie nights on the west lawn of the Hollyhock House.
House 2 Stimson 2421 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles Why it’s historic: Built in 1891, it was considered the most expensive home project in Los Angeles at one point, costing $150,000. Originally belonging to banking tycoon Thomas Douglas Stimson, the castleesque, 30-room property and Romanesque architectural marvel has survived a dynamite attack and, most recently, boisterous frat house parties. The interior is more or less an homage to wood craftsmanship with intricate oak floors. Why you should visit it: You might want to view the wonderful Gothic vestige of a long-gone past that still manages to thrive as one of Los Angeles’ crown jewels. And, once you're done, there are a plethora of other things to do in the heart of downtown, where it is located.
Mansion 3 Greystone 905 Loma Vista Dr., Beverly Hills www.Greystonemansion.org Why it’s historic: Designed by Gordon Kaufmann to be an architectural
revival of the Tudor era (UK, Middle Ages), it was completed in 1928 for $3 million – an unprecedented sum at the time. The 55-room estate was a gift from oil magnate Edward Doheny to his son, Junior, who called himself "Ned." Sadly, things turned out badly for Ned, who was involved in an apparent murder-suicide with his longtime friend and aid Hugh Plunket. Since 1965, it has belonged to the city of Beverly Hills, which has partnered with the American Film Institute as a spot for prominent films such as "Spider-Man" and "There Will Be Blood." Why you should visit it: Apart from the lavish park where the property is situated, the mansion has, starting in 2002, been the site of a must-see annual play loosely based on the Doheny family - "The Manor" - which incorporates many of the rooms and corridors. There are also regular events and tours offered to the public. H

Why it's historic: Since being designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1977, the house (and now museum) was built by brothers Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene in 1908. Intended as a winter home for David Gamble of the still-going-strong Proctor & Gamble company, the home is comprised of 17 different types of wood and is influenced by Japanese stylings. Why you should visit it: For "Back to the Future" enthusiasts, it is known as Dr. Emmett Brown's (Christopher Lloyd) "Brown Mansion" (this was referenced in a newspaper clipping during the first of the three films). There are also a multitude of guided tour options, including one that focuses on the ornate glass windows and light fixtures. It is also an ideal lunch spot.
Casa Pacifica 5 La 4100 Calle Isabella, San Clemente www.bit.ly/2pPEorL Why it's historic: Though it was erected in 1926 by Carl Lindbom for one of San Clemente's founding fathers in Hamilton H. Cotton, it became famous for later being Richard Nixon's west coast retreat, dubbed the "Western White House," where he lived with wife Pat throughout his presidency and resided in for many a year in the wake of the Watergate scandal. Anointed historical status in 2009, the 9,000-square-foot property, which had to be outfitted with Secret Service security features, has four breathtaking gardens, and is currently valued at $63.5 million. Why you should visit it: Although tours are not available, it's worth capturing a glimpse of the oceanfront home that also hosted world leaders like Henry Kissinger, Leonid Brezhnev, and more. Plus, there's the nearby San Clemente State Beach for those who want a direct line of sight to La Casa Pacifica. H WWW.SO CA L LI F E MAG.COM

W. Marston House 6 George 3525 7th Ave., San Diego www.sohosandiego.org/main/marston2.htm Why it's historic: Located in Balboa Park, and designed by influential architects
JOHN R. MCCUTCHEN (3)
William Sterling Hebbard and Irving Gill for department store owner/preservationist George Marston, the home's architecture (completed in 1905) was a forerunner of the Arts and Crafts Movement (e.g., traditional craftsmanship). The home is also famous for its antique furniture by Gustav Stickley and Charles Limbert, as well as for several valuable paintings by Maurice Braun, Alfred Mitchell, and more. The various gardens are notable for their vast assortment of indigenous and exotic plants. Why you should visit it: It was converted into a museum in 1987, with the help of the Save Our Heritage Organization, which has been instrumental in the upkeep of the property. In addition to a souvenir-style shop, tours of the property are available. For those looking to tie the know in the foreseeable future, weddings can also be booked on the premises.
del Herrero 7 Casa 1387 E. Valley Rd., Montecito www.casadelherrero.com
EVERYDAYRUNAWAY.COM
Why it's historic: Like the Marston House, the 11-acre Casa del Herrero (or "House of the Blacksmith" in English) has SpanishColonial architectural roots and has also been turned into a museum. In 1925, architect George Washington Smith, a pioneer of the Spanish Colonial Revival style in North America, constructed the house for noted renaissance man George Fox Steedman. That same year, the house curiously refused to succumb to a devastating Santa Barbara earthquake. Why you should visit it: The Santa Barbara/Montecito area is already a gorgeous place to visit, and this special house and its Moorish gardens offer a culturally rich snapshot of much of the beautiful and distinguished architectural style that has shaped the area. There are also art shows, recurring events, and docent-led tours available to the public. â?–

Vines, you arrive at Sanford Winery for a winery tour by ATV followed by a picnic in the vineyards and bottle of wine signed by Sanford General Manager Steve Fennell to enjoy later at the resort or back home. With The Blending & Bottling Experience, you sample selections directly from the barrel before the Sanford team takes you through the process of creating a custom blend. After it's produced, they help you bottle, cork, and label your blend to take home. During the fall harvest season (late August - early October), you can also live a day in the life of a winemaker, experiencing each stage of the wine making process followed by a picnic in the vineyard, and a harvest certificate also signed by Sanford's general manager and a signed bottle of wine. Belmond El Encanto Experiences also offers tastings paired with cheeses and charcuterie prepared by Executive Chef Johan Denizot. During the Clonal Tasting Experience, you taste your way through Sanford’s single block chardonnay and pinot noir, while the Vertical Tasting Experience in the resort's elegant Wine Room features samplings of six wines from three vintages (2011, 2012, and 2013) with the detailing of each wine's history and expertise behind it. H
a secluded Santa Barbara hilltop setting overlooking sweeping panoramas of the city and glistening Pacific Ocean is Belmond El Encanto, Santa Barbara’s only Forbes Five-Star resort. Built in 1918, it became an escape for celebs including Hedy Lamarr, Clark Gable, Carole Lombard and other Hollywood legends who valued its tranquil seclusion, majestic surroundings and impeccable amenities. Today, it still embodies the essence of old California charm and remains an exclusive romantic hideaway for Hollywood elite and other discerning travelers. Belmond El Encanto's seven acres embrace the main building, signature wisteria-covered trellis arbor, wishing well, lily pond, and 92 luxuriously-furnished Spanish Colonial and Craftsman-style bungalows and suites placed along pathways winding through lush landscaping. Beginning in 2004, the resort underwent a sevenyear, $134 million renovation, restoring the magnificence of the nearly century-old original structures and updating them with every amenity. This secluded paradise is just a five-minute drive from State Street in downtown Santa Barbara with its fashionable boutiques, art galleries, museums, wineries, fine dining and ethnic restaurants, and charming historic buildings. It's also just minutes from Stearns Wharf and the waterfront lined with shops, eateries, and water sports equipment rentals for jet skis, scuba gear, paddleboards, SUPs (stand-up paddleboards), sailboats, powerboats and more. Cruises include the popular sunset cocktails cruises and longer excursions to the Channel Islands where en route you may spot gray and humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions, starfish, and sea birds. And for the ultimate sea kayaking adventures, enjoy some of the world's best coastal kayaking en route to Channel Islands National Park and join your guide for a paddle through the sea caves of Scorpion Bay. Also nearby is the Santa Barbara Bowl that's featuring a starstudded line-up of summer and fall concerts, and if you've never seen a polo match, here's your opportunity. The Belmond El Encanto Mayors Cup will be held July 7 – 9, and there are matches every Sunday through October 8 at the nearby Santa Barbara Polo Fields where you can relax in the polo lounge and enjoy local wine and beer tastings. If you'd like to try sky diving, SkyDive Santa Barbara offers tandem jumps for first timers. The weekly Santa Barbara Farmers Market on Saturday is a local tradition. Belmond El Encanto's Executive Chef Johan Denizot often takes guests for an insider's look into the marketplace and to meet his favorite vendors. You can also opt to join him for a cooking class using what he purchases and enjoy the results for lunch.

The Wine Trails Amateur and astute oenophiles can access some of the Central Coast's finest vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley as well as lesserknown wineries such as those housed in the rows of industrial buildings in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. Discovering new chardonnays and pinot noirs, meeting wine makers, and lunching on special food and wine pairings amid rolling vineyards creates a truly memorable experience. And, of course, you can take a bottle or two home with you or arrange to have them shipped. The Belmond El Encanto concierge can help you decide which excursion best suits your tastes. The resort recently announced its partnership with local Sanford Winery, currently owned and managed by the Terlato family. The winery was established 1971 and is home to the oldest pinot noir vines in the county. With the first program, Picnic in the

WORRY-FREE VACATION BY
ESTHER C. BLEUEL, MA, MFT, MDR
LEAVING FOR A VACATION can be one of the best feelings in the world — be it a weekend, a week or a month. For many, however, slowing down and relaxing is difficult. All kinds of concerns start popping up. How will the office manage without me? What about my customers and potential new clients? Will the kids be okay once we’re on the road? What about the dog? I know it’s cliché, but life really is too short. Enjoy every moment that you can. Here are some tips to help you plan for, and enjoy, the journey. H

something only you can manage. Did you know that you can’t do what you can’t imagine? So, think about what you want your vacation to look like. What are you looking forward to? How will it make a difference in your own life, as well as the lives of your travel partners? Mindfulness. Be fully present with your attention, energy and each of your senses heightened to notice and experience the environment. It does take effort and practice to live in the present, not burdened by the past or worried about the future. Identify and banish distractions. Start practicing at home. Choice. Don’t say yes, if you really mean no. Give yourself permission to decide what matters to you and the outcome you desire. Saying a reluctant yes to yourself or others will feed resentment or regret. Realistic Expectations. Choose to accept the reality of waiting, lines, crowds or traffic. Make a game of annoying situations. People watching is always fun. Anticipation. Enjoy preparing and looking forward to your upcoming getaway. Imagine a few things that you will really enjoy. Take steps to create those experiences.

“plate” and set aside what can wait. Do what must be done to ease your mind. Delegate when possible: paperwork or administrative chores, simple errands, repairs or cleaning. Expectations. Identify a few priorities, things to do or places to visit and research each in advance. Avoid the stress and disappointment caused by lack of simple planning. Leave time for spontaneity and hanging-out. Less is better. Travel light – your suitcase and your worries. Leave anything extraneous or cumbersome at home. Insist on a temporary separation from the stress and distraction caused by electronic devices. Draw a line in the sand around cell phone use. Memories. Even if you love taking pictures, make room for some camera-free time. Sometimes, instead of recording images, experience the moment fully; smell, listen, observe, watch, feel, breathe. Experiential memories are priceless! Humor. Expect that a few things will go wrong and when they do, choose to laugh. There’s only so much you can control. You are not director of the universe. Did you know? Research shows that most people who vacation are happier in the weeks preceding their vacation while they are planning it than during or after their trip. The one exception? When their vacations were very relaxing, most of the people surveyed were happy before, during and after their vacation. Lesson. Be mindful of anticipating and creating a vacation that you will truly enjoy. Take steps to help create memories and experiences that you and your loved ones will treasure. ❖

GETTY VILLA, MALIBU When J. Paul Getty decided to build a villa in Malibu in the early 1970s, he wanted it modeled after the Villa dei Papiri. Back then he was collecting Greek, Roman and French Decorative Arts. Getty’s long love of art came from his interest in travel and history. Today, some 400,000 people visit the villa a year. Though Getty died in 1976 and never saw the Villa, it’s part of his enduring legacy.

The young man, born and raised in Orange County, has Down syndrome and says he always wanted to be famous. Now he gets stopped on the street because he’s recognized from being on the Emmy-winning A&E series “Born This Way,” which follows a group of seven young adults with Down syndrome who openly share their lives - their joys and sorrows - that show their hopes and dreams are just like everyone else’s. When we spoke on the phone, Sean’s mother (Sandra McElwee) was on the line as well to help her son formulate his thoughts as well as repeat his answers if necessary. Sometimes his speech is not clear. In fact, McElwee says that is his biggest hurdle, but that hasn’t stopped him. He wanted to be a performer from the time he was three years old. “We went to a festival and there was a children’s performing group and his first three-word sentence was, ‘Me do that,’” Sandra recalls. So Sean started singing and dancing in school and church. When he got older he took acting lessons at Saddleback College and then the producers of “Born This Way” discovered him at the Down Syndrome Association of Orange County where he was taking acting classes. When he was 15 years old and in high school, McElwee wasn’t as comfortable in his own skin. No one else at school had Down syndrome and his school didn’t offer Special Ed classes. McElwee was in regular classrooms so he felt different, even though the other students were very kind to him. McElwee says his parents helped him through the tough times and he calls his mother his “Momager.” “They took me to events with other Down syndrome people,” he says. Sandra says they went to events hosted by the Down Syndrome Association and he realized there were other people just like him. He also plays golf with Special Olympics. He says Orange County was a great place to grow up. “I liked the beach, Disneyland and Universal Studios.” Life got exponentially greater when “Born This Way” came along. McElwee hopes that when people watch “Born This Way” they realize having Down syndrome isn’t so bad. “And they shouldn’t be afraid of me or other people with Down syndrome,” he says.

The self-professed ladies man says what he wants people to know about him is that he’s sexy and hot. Plus that he’s a nice person and a hard worker. He recently obtained a new job at Get Air Surf City, a trampoline park. “I’ll help kids,” McElwee says. “And I will referee the dodge ball games. It’s going to be fun.” He is also very excited about starting his own company called Seanese (www.seanese.com) where he will offer shirts, hats, bags and mugs with the funny things he says on the show like “Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy,” “That’s What Faith Can Do,” and “Ladies Love My Beard.” Sandra says he came up with the concept after one of his motivational speeches entitled “It Could Happen. That’s What Faith Can Do.” He’s gotten so many requests recently for motivational talks that Sandra had to quit her job. “In January he told me his speech was boring and he wanted to do another one and he just started dictating this amazing speech about ‘It Could Happen’, and when it happens ‘That’s What Faith Can Do,” she says. “We went through his hopes and dreams he’s had that have come true and wrote a new presentation. When we put the finishing touches on the power point he said, ‘Now we need shirts and hats and bags.’” Every month McElwee will give 10% of the profits to a different charity including The Down Syndrome Association of Orange County, The Global Down Syndrome Foundation, Reece’s Rainbow, LuMind Research Down Syndrome Foundation, National Down Syndrome Congress, The National Down Syndrome Society, Special Olympics, Best Buddies, National Down Syndrome Adoption Network, Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network, and Changing the Face of Beauty. Sandra says her son has grown from his work on “Born This Way.” “He’s always been confident, but now he’s really confident,” Sandra says. “I’ve been really proud of how kind he is to his fans.” ❖

When Chef Anthony Sinsay came on board at San Diego’s Jsix in June, 2016, he couldn’t resist infusing the menu with a little bit of his Filipino roots. On the website this chef describes himself as “a fat Filipino kid from South San Diego” and he is paying homage to that kid who watched his father cook in their kitchen. “He was making Filipino food and traditional American dishes,” Sinsay says. “To this day I still think my father made the best fried chicken I ever had.” His father was ill when Sinsay was young and his earliest memories are of sitting in his room with his dad watching Julia Child, Jacques Pépin, Martin Yan and The Frugal Gourmet. “Then we would go downstairs and he would try to emulate them,” Sinsay recalls. Sinsay’s father passed away when he was 11-years-old and being in the kitchen from then on out made him feel close to his father. “It set the tone for a career in the industry,” he says. Now he draws on his memories when he cooks and he immerses nostalgia into the food, striving to give his own children that connection. Sinsay describes the cuisine at Jsix as “modern American,” with a Filipino flavor, although there is some Spanish influence as well from his year-long training with Jose Andres. For instance, their beet salad is cooked in the Filipino “paksiw style.” One of their guests’ favorite dishes is the “Pancit Bihon”, a Filipino vegetable stir-fry with noodles. “When a non-Filipino finds out that I’m Filipino, it’s, ‘Oh my God, Pancit. Have you ever had Pancit?’ It’s become a very American dish.” Sinsay says the most interesting dish they have is their Market Seafood Crudo because it changes all the time. “Our food is whimsical,” Sinsay says. “We cook from a center of passion and pride. We’re excited about the food that we cook and we have a connection to it.” H

Rene Clemente, director of food and beverage at Santa Barbara’s Finch & Fork describes the cuisine as “Modern American comfort food.” “When you dine with us at Finch & Fork, you can definitely expect your meals to be playful and to pay homage to timeless American dishes with a modern twist,” Clemente says. Chef James Siao has been with the restaurant for five years. Clemente says he uses local, fresh and simple ingredients. Among the guest favorites is the pork chop, Clemente asserts. “We serve that with a butternut squash puree,” he explains. “An apple bacon chutney also complements the pork chop.” He says their scallops prepared with a chorizo vinaigrette, grapefruit, gold beet relish and avocado are also very popular. “It’s a very clean, simple dish, but a lot of flavors are going on in that plate,” Clemente says. Their daily specials cater to their local following. Tuesday night is very popular with many guests favoring the buttermilk fried chicken. Sunday’s prime rib is also a winner. “Our burger and beer night on Mondays are very popular with locals,” Clemente says. “We always have a different type of burger that we offer and

our guests can pair those burgers with any of our draft beers on selection.” He adds that the wine list is 100% local. “We have access to some delicious wineries.” Additionally, their cocktails are hand-crafted and pair well with their menu dishes. “You really get a good gastronomic experience when you dine here, from the food to the local wine list and our hand-crafted cocktails,” Clemente contends. The restaurant is not only known for its dinner menu. Diners love their Saturday and Sunday brunches as well. Clemente mentions the roasted pork belly & egg and the huevos rancheros as a couple of brunch menu favorites, along with the mimosas made with seasonal purees. “We do the traditional brunch items as well like a french toast, but we put a twist on it,” Clemente says. “We put caramelized bananas on top and also a walnut crumble.” He is proud of the fact that the restaurant is a local driven establishment. “We are very involved in our community,” Clemente says. “We see a lot of regulars from week to week.” ❖

t's more than just a southland city known for its elite residents and celebrity happenings. For 10 years, Beverly Hills starred in its own TV series along with Jennie Garth, Jason Priestley and the rest of the "Beverly Hills, 90210" cast. For nearly a century, its palm-lined streets have played their roles in enumerable movie and TV scenes, and on its 100th birthday in 2014, the city became an official landmark. Yes, Beverly Hills has its own star status and today is using its celebrity to enrich the lives of visitors and residents with its new WELLTH campaign. That's not to say you can't still immerse yourself in the other kind of wealth, glamour and excitement that beguiles those who get their first glimpse of the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly Wilshire or Rodeo Drive. From its beginning, the former farmland, once rich in lima beans, has given way to the posh residences and exclusive estates of the Hollywood elite and other moguls beginning with Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford's legendary Pickfair, built in 1920, overlooking the Beverly Hills Hotel which has its own star status. Since opening its doors in 1912, the pink hotel has accommodated Hollywood legends Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, John Wayne, Elizabeth Taylor, John Lennon, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and hundreds of other international moguls. These VIPs sunned around the pool, mapped out big deals on napkins in the famed Polo Lounge or, like Howard Hughes, called a bungalow "home." It's also been featured in numerous movies such as "The Way We Were," "California Suite" and "American Gigolo," and was on the cover of the Eagles' biggest hit album, "Hotel California." Another legendary hotel star is the Beverly Wilshire, now a Four Seasons property, which is especially known for its role with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman." Other appearances have included "Escape from the Planet of the Apes," "Clueless," "Sex and the City: The Movie," and "Valentine’s Day." Elvis Presley, Warren Beatty, and Steve McQueen once called it home and enjoyed the swimming pool fashioned after the Mediterranean-style pool at Sophia Loren's Italian villa. And, of course, The Beverly Hilton at the intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards, is home of the Golden Globe Awards™, site of the Pre-Grammy Gala, and hundreds of additional red carpet events and star-studded galas. HE SANTA MONICA PIER IS DEFINITELY ONE OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA’S GEMS. WITH SO MUCH FUN TO OFFER, THE DESTINATION CAN BE A DAY TRIP OR EVEN A WEEKEND GETAWAY. Restaurants, shopping and a full amusement park are among the possible pleasures after a day at the beach or a casual walk on the Pier. If you want to learn about the 100-year history of the pier while you’re taking that walk, on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. and noon you can partake in a free hour-long walking tour. Just meet up at the Pier Shop, located at the historic Merry-Go-Round Building, and a docent will lead the way. Walking is probably the most subdued activity you can do at the pier. But would you believe if you’re looking for the other extreme, you can take a flying trapeze class at the Pier? LAinfo@trapezeschool.com. While you’re taking a stroll, stop into some of the fun shops along the way. Check out Oatman Rock Shop which boasts a lot of 60’s merchandise, shells, crystals and the like. At the Pier Shop there is some souvenir clothing. Marlene’s Beachcomber is where you can pick up towels, sunscreen and necessities for any beach trip and 66 to Cali is a small shop dedicated to Route 66 and American-made goods. At the Bait and Tackle shop you can get whatever you need to do some fishing. Yep, that’s right, you can fish at the pier. You can see 100 ocean species at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, which actually has hands-on activities for kids in addition to educational programs.

The carousel was built sometime in the 1920’s and consists of 46 wooden animals - 44 horses, 1 rabbit, 1 goat and two wooden sleighs - on which guests sit. The icing on the cake is the amusement park. Although hours vary from season to season and weekdays and weekends, you can spend a large chunk of time just in Pacific Park alone, enjoying the 12 thrilling rides. You won’t want to miss the famous lit up Pacific Wheel, the only solar-powered Ferris wheel in the world that gives guests a panoramic view of the Southern California coastline. The West Coaster is the only roller coaster located on a pier over the Pacific coastline, escalating to heights of 55 feet while visitors experience a sea breeze. Joshua Tree National Park Located less than three hours southeast of Los Angeles, lies this beautiful, natural desert landscape with large mountains and steep canyons – providing a raw reminder of what California used to be. Joshua Tree is world famous for its amazing rock formations filled with crystals whose sparkle reflects the sun and beckons the climber. People come from all corners of the earth to scale these huge boulders, but you don’t have to be a pro to enjoy. There are so many adventures to embrace: Camping, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking or just taking a peaceful walk. One of the most sought after experiences is that of the night sky with desert darkness and no humidity the Milky Way is incredibly vivid. Try scheduling your trip during a meteor shower, the Orionids in October, the Leonids in November, or the Geminids in December.
Channel Islands National Park Called the Treasure of the Sea, let the Channel Islands take you back to a time of innocence and calm where you can hike and experience the land as it once was, embrace the majesty of the blue whale, or glide in a kayak for an up close look at nature. Whether you choose to hike, walk or snorkel, these five islands of wild, jagged beauty provide a calm that will restore your soul. The islands offer one of the most diverse marine environments on earth with tide pools, secluded rookeries, giant kelp forests, bald eagles and plants and animals found nowhere else on earth. Just an hour’s boat ride from mainland Ventura, you will be rewarded with the sound of waves lapping against the shore and gain a new perspective from the sheer simplicity of the islands. The islands are only accessible by private boat, chartered boat, www.IslandPackers.com or plane, www.FlightstotheChannelIslands.com
Mojave National Preserve Located halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas you can arrive at this 1.6 million acre park in less than four hours. Experience sand dunes, volcanic cinder cones, canyons, mountains and mesas that reveal longabandoned mines and homesteads. This beautiful, open country provides serenity and solitude from the metropolis of L.A. The sun sets are magnificent and stay until dark for an amazing 3-D show of stars - make a wish as they shoot by.

he idea of vacationing at a ranch may summon images of rowdy barnyard animals roaming wild in your personal space, but a visit to HorseTail Ranch will quickly change that picture. In the trendy wine region of Paso Robles, HorseTail Ranch is nestled in the town of Creston, just a 4-hour drive from the Los Angeles area. Unlike a classic rural ranch, HorseTail is the perfect blend of nature and luxury. The 150-acre property in Central California consists of rolling hills with spectacular 360 degree views, a posh 5-bedroom, 4 ½-bath Villa, a cozy cabin, a lake and stables with 14 horses ready to rent for a customized ride. And yes, there are barnyard animals – a pig, chickens, donkeys, a miniature horse and a friendly goat named Hitch. Far from rowdy, they are loveable, engaging and a significant part of the overall setting. The 3500-square foot upscale Villa is spacious with high ceilings, contemporary design, a modern kitchen and exquisite furnishings. There is a hot tub in the yard where guests can unwind, sip wine and take in the stunning views of the vast landscape. There’s a fire pit, hanging lights, and plenty of seating, providing a prime backdrop for entertaining or simply relaxing. The Villa is an ideal site for a wedding, romantic escape or a home to share with another family, given that it sleeps 12 comfortably. With amenities such as 72-inch plasma TVs, a Keurig coffee maker, a fireplace, Wi-Fi, a wine fridge, washer & dryer and comfy beds with plush bedding, The Villa is a top pick for those seeking a deluxe, well-appointed getaway. For a fewer number of guests, The Cabin, which sleeps four, offers a rustic 1,000 foot space that includes one bedroom, a small bath and kitchen, and an open loft. It’s homey and comfortable and makes a charming honeymoon destination. Adjacent to The Cabin is a large, outdoor dining area with a gas barbeque, perfect for dinner beneath the striking Paso Robles sunsets. H

Manhattan Beach Pier
Malibu Pier
S
outhern California is known for a few things: Hollywood, weather, goofy politics, traffic and the beaches. Maybe, especially the beaches — Laguna, Venice, Malibu, Newport, etc. Whether you’re looking for beautiful sand or beautiful people, great looking bathing suits or no bathing suits at all, the funkiness of Venice, the glamour of Coronado, or the pure fun of Hermosa, there is a beach for all of us. Now that we’re in the middle of summer, many of our minds turn to the beaches. It’s a great time to break out the Beach Boys and the coolers, kick yourself for not getting in better “bathing suit shape,” and head to the sand. But, and I know this is sacrilege to many, some of us do not enjoy the coalwalking simulation across the silly hot beach sand, fighting for a spot to lay our blankets and regretting for days the couple of spots the sunscreen missed. Fortunately, Southern California has blessed those of us who love the smell, weather and “vibe” of the beach communities, but not always the actual beach, with a number of amazing alternatives.
PIERS! BY
SCOTT HARRIS
Piers! While each SoCal pier is unique, just like the beaches themselves, most do seem to have two things in common — fishing and great food. Whether you want to sit down to a fine meal or sample the ever-growing list of foods on a stick, you are in luck. Somehow, all food tastes better, drinks are colder and troubles seem to float away as you walk the various piers. And for many, our piers are all about fishing, either doing it or watching it, both equally fun. Just know in advance that the seemingly innocuous question, “How’s the fishing?” can easily lead to a one-hour conversation. You can start with our northernmost pier, one that is so often overlooked, the beautiful and quaint AVILA BEACH PIER just outside of San Luis Obispo. The Santa Barbara area offers STEARNS WHARF, which has all the traditional pier attractions, and also GOLETA PIER, best known for its views. My “local” pier is the VENTURA PIER, home to the Channel Islands National Park headquarters and Andria’s Seafood Restaurant, which I’ve been visiting faithfully — and enjoying — since it opened in 1982. Continuing south, you’ll find MALIBU PIER, which combines good eats with fishing and the chance to stumble across a star

96
or two, or maybe catch a movie or TV show in the middle of production. SANTA MONICA PIER is where Route 66 ends, and as the only California pier with an amusement park, it can be argued it’s where the fun begins. MANHATTAN BEACH PIER has the Roundhouse Aquarium, and the REDONDO BEACH PIER has many of my childhood memories. Keep heading south, and you’ll find the BELMONT VETERANS MEMORIAL PIER and access to all things Long Beach. Then, as you make your way into Orange County, you’ll find the HUNTINGTON BEACH, NEWPORT BEACH, SAN CLEMENTE and BALBOA PIERS. And finally, as you head into San Diego County, you can enjoy CRYSTAL PIER, where you can even spend the night at the Crystal Pier Hotel & Cottages. OCEAN BEACH MUNICIPAL PIER is one of San Diego’s most popular tourist attractions and, just before you cross into Mexico, you’ll find the IMPERIAL BEACH PIER. So for food, fishing, family, friends and fun, try one of Southern California’s piers. You may still get sunburned, but you shouldn’t have to pick sand out of places sand was never meant to be. Oh, and have a corn dog for me! ❖

While people around the world may only associate Southern California with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood or the laid back attitude of sunny San Diego, SoCal has so much more to offer. Just outside of its celebrated urban centers, it is a rugged place, a place of extremes, with hot red rock deserts, cold-water pacific islands with wild kelp beds, and snow capped mountain peaks. At least, that’s how I see Southern California. How do you see it? We want to know! We at Southern California Life magazine are devoted to showing you all that it has to offer. We’ll close each issue showcasing the beauty of our region, with its landscapes, and landmarks. And we want you, our readers, to participate. For a chance to be published on our “My Southern California” photo page, follow us on Instagram (@socallifemag) and use these hashtags in your favorite photos of the landscapes, landmarks, and lifestyles that you think define our home:
