IRES BLAZED THROUGH SEVERAL SOCAL COMMUNITIES RECENTLY, BURNING HUNDREDS

of thousands of acres, causing monumental destruction, massive losses and of course, much heartache. Consequently, when the rains hit our area, mudslides added to the death toll and damage. For weeks the ravages these disasters imposed across our Southland were aired on local news broadcasts as viewers watched in horror. But while a multitude suffered unimaginable loss, countless others rallied around to help in any way they could. in crisis we oen witness the heroic actions of rescue workers and huge-hearted people who find any way possible to lend a hand. We feature a special piece on page 46 honoring the first responders, rescue workers and kind humans who spent money, time, effort and resources to do what they could to help the victims. Southern California covers quite a bit of territory, but when one community suffers we can muster the energy needed to help those in need. in this case, several areas suffered simultaneously as at one point it seemed as though the entire Southland was in flames. Although the devastation was abundant, there was plenty of kindheartedness to go around.

We like to think of ourselves as a “happy” magazine since we generally feature the best that SoCal offers visitors and locals and leave the messy stories and reports of catastrophic events to the news outlets. Yet because these fires and mudslides impacted our vast region to such an enormous degree, we felt we had to spotlight those who helped ease the suffering of those affected. We have omitted the gruesome images as those can be found plastered online and across our local papers and have chosen to focus on the heroes. We hope the article moves you as much as it inspired us.

We also hope that the accounts help us all remember that kindness and helpfulness are great qualities to emulate – not just in times of emergency, but every day and as oen as possible.

HISTORY ISN’T SOMETHING THAT should be confined to the pages of a book. it's also living, tangible.

So it is with e Pilgrim. is has nothing to do with Plymouth rock or the mayflower, and everything to do with a special ship that was a fullsized replica of the vessel made famous by richard Henry Dana, Jr. in his memoir “Two Years Before the mast” that shares the intimate tale of his twoyear sea voyage from Boston to California on a merchant ship in the 1830s. e Pilgrim was created in Denmark in 1945. ree decades later, e Pilgrim would make lisbon, Portugal her port. it was in Portugal that the ship got a major makeover and would become the vessel she looks like today.

But since 1981, e Pilgrim has called Dana Point Harbor and the Ocean institute home. Her arrival was highly anticipated, with excitement over the educational possibilities it presented. it was by good fortune that the Pilgrim wound up in Dana Point. “it was originally going to be floating museum in Northern California,” says Dan Goldbacher, director of maritime programs for the Ocean institute. e Pilgrim would prove to live up to its educational expectations. its living history programs have won national awards.

But first, the backstory. e original was built in 1825 for $50,000, and was a bit smaller than its peers, at only 90 feet compared to the 110 feet average of others in its class. According to the Ocean institute, the 1834 journey was strategic. e ship’s owners lived in Boston and they wanted to get to California. ey didn’t want to miss out the booming California cattle hide trade. e story goes that when the Pilgrim le it was packed with tons of New England goodies, shoes, food and

graders. ey relive the experience, make like it’s the 1830s and they are on the two-year trip from Boston to Alta, California. ey go deep into early California’s past and become sailors and historical characters and learn what it takes to work like a team, communicate while hoisting cargo, row long-boats, raise sails, stand night watch, swab the decks, and of course they must sing chanteys, and talk the talk, “aye, aye, mate.” “e students pick a role on the ship and do different jobs. ey step out of their comfort zone, some find out they like being leadership. We’ve had students go into the maritime profession.

Some students come back to volunteer later. Another student decided to go to the U.K. to study to be a nautical architect. it’s also a great opportunity to put history in context,” says Goldbacher.

About 10,000 kids a year participate in the 18-hour program.

But students don’t have to wait for a class trip to enjoy the Pilgrim.

Oen on Sundays, there is an open house where anyone can go aboard and soak up some nautical heritage. e atmosphere is lively with docents dressed in period costume, plenty of tall tales, singing and if you like, raising the sail. e Ocean institute has about 80,000 visitors a year and also offers whale watching, cruises, outdoor and maritime science programs, birthday parties, trips to Catalina island, special programs for seniors, tall ship tours, an annual jazz festival and more. it’s an important piece of the Orange County landscape.

Says Goldbacher, “it’s common for parents who are here with their children to say they remember coming as kid, or a teacher who is with their class talking about when they came to visit as a kid.” ❖

He went to Harvard, became an author, a lawyer. He helped changed maritime law,” says Goldbacher.

Over the course of nine days and in five venues including the Laemmle Playhouse 7 (673 E. Colorado Blvd.) where all 100 entrants will be spotlighted, this festival will be immersive for all patrons. Those deciding to go with the Day Pass for $30, Screening and Lounge Pass which includes all films for $80, or the All Access Pass for $130, will enjoy complimentary beverages, mingle with both the press and performers on the red carpet, and engage in Q&A sessions following each film. Beverly Hills Film Festival April 4 - 8 www.beverlyhillsďŹ lmfestival.com Prospective writers and filmmakers, comprising roughly 44,000 attendees in all, will confer at TCL Chinese 6 Theatres (6801 Hollywood Blvd.) about their career goals and outlook on the movie industry. Started by independent artist Nino Simone in 2001, the 18th annual festival is aimed at enhancing how the arts can positively influence a population at large. Amid screenings, red carpet events, educational sessions, and networking opportunities are gogetters, leaders, and investors who literally and figuratively see the big picture.

Film submissions will be categorized according to screenplays as well as feature, documentary, animated, and short-subject films. While achievements in each category will be bestowed, there will also be a top echelon of honors such as the Golden Palm for best overall film and the Living Legend and Digital Ace awards, both of which will go to individual pioneers. San Diego Latino Film Festival March 15 - 25 www.sdlatinoďŹ lm.com Scheduled to emanate from AMC Fashion Valley 18 at 7037 Friars Rd. in San Diego, the Latino Film Festival is an ode to diversity and ethnic involvement in cinema as it tells stories from standpoints that are off the beaten path. For over two decades, the festival has presented and paid homage to the Latino voice and experience in both shorts and full-length pictures. General admission is only $11.50, and there are also various packages including a 5-Ticket Pack, a Film Pass including admission to 11 films and VIP perks, and for insatiable film lovers, an All-Access Pass to 120 films and admission to the opening and closing-night parties. Volunteers are welcome and many of the proceeds will go to educational programs in the area.

The Newport Beach Film Festival April 26 - May 3 www.newportbeachfilmfest.com A whopping forty countries will be represented in a welcoming environment where documentaries, music videos, sports films, animated works, an architectural/design series, and collegiate projects will make up the 300 features in 10 venues. In addition to providing exposure, industry professionals will be on hand to impart and share information about the business of film (e.g. distribution). The festival brings together Orange County’s visionaries and fosters a sense of community.

Previous films highlighted here include “Layer Cake,” “The Illusionist,” “Waitress,” “(500) Days of Summer,” and the 2006 Best Picture, “Crash.” This year, up to 60,000 like-minded attendees are expected. Tickets can be purchased at the Main Box Office at 957 Newport Center Drive.

Calabasas Film Festival September 12 -16 www.calabasasfilmfestival.com This festival has made a name for itself by primarily focusing on the youth initiative and using outreach programs to equip nascent filmmakers with the tools they need to succeed. Much of this happens at the Motion Picture and Television Fund’s Louis B. Mayer Theater (23388 Mulholland Dr., Woodland Hills, CA) where 15-minute student film screenings and award galas can be enjoyed along with light bites. Entertainment will predominantly include the work of high school students from Calabasas and Agoura High, Viewpoint, El Camino Real, Chaminade, Louisville, and Oaks Christian High.

The high school students’ submissions will be highly visible at a festival that also premiered renowned films like “Equalizer” starring Denzel Washington and “Black Mass” with Johnny Depp.

In addition to the usual film festival protocol, this one is seeking volunteers and paid personnel to man the box office, usher, and are skilled in sound and photography. ❖

in my last column, i wrote about intentions for the New Year … the promises we make about how we’d like to improve. How have you done so far? Have you had any conversations with yourself about your intentions or accomplishments? moving into spring oen brings thoughts of spring cleaning and de-cluttering. Since tax season is just around the corner, we may need to focus on financial concerns. And let’s not forget that summer and bathing suit season will be here in no time. What kind of vacation shall we have this year?

Whenever we choose to improve, to begin or to end, it’s important that we focus on the positive aspects of our goals and circumstances. if we let ourselves down, self-criticism tends to creep in. instead, let’s be kind and accountable with ourselves and just get back on track.

Words matter! e life you have now is the result of what you think and of the conversations you have with yourself. make it a point to be independent and not be defined by the opinions and judgments of others. Creating a life of meaning and purpose requires listening to your own self-talk. is it helpful, encouraging and upliing? if not, change your self-defeating thinking.

Speaking of conversations, a good way to improve the quality of your relationships and your life is to engage in constructive conversations with others. Focus on achieving positive outcomes. Optimistic self-talk will increase your self-confidence and self-respect, diminish fear and doubt, and reduce stress. You can coach yourself through most challenging situations with a positive attitude and supportive inner dialogue. Always show respect and kindness to yourself and others.

1 / LISTEN TO YOURSELF. Notice whether your message is helpful or critical, positive or negative. Think about and feel your pattern of self-talk.

2 / TEST REALITY. What would you say to a friend in a similar situation? Is there a more positive way of looking at this?

4 / GAIN PERSPECTIVE. Ask yourself, “Is this situation as bad as I imagine?

Is there anything good about it? Will this matter in five years?”

5 / YOUR INNER VOICE INCLUDES CONSCIOUS AND UNCONSCIOUS THOUGHTS, ASSUMPTIONS AND BELIEFS. Some self-talk is positive and reasonable – “I’d better study for that exam.” Some is negative or self-defeating – “I’m sure I’m going to fail.” Practice messages that are uplifting and validating. At five years of age, Eric mukes knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up: e lone ranger. Aer all, the guy rode around on a horse, wore a cool mask and fought outlaws. What little boy wouldn’t want to be him? irty-seven years later, Captain Eric mukes rides around on a fire engine, wears a mask and fights fires.

But he would be the first to tell you he’s no lone ranger.

He and his team of firefighters at the Ventura City Fire Department, Station #5, work as a single lifesaving unit, tackling anything that Southern California’s natural disasters — and other life-threatening situations — throw at them. Never was this more true than during the recent SoCal fires, which combined, devastated approximately 369,522 acres, destroyed over a thousand structures and paved the way for the next disaster — the montecito mudslides. e day the omas Fire broke out, a team of Ventura City firefighters was dispatched to Santa Paula where the fire originated. “We’re the ‘specialized rescuers,’” states mukes. “So when the omas Fire suddenly turned and descended with full fury towards the city of Ventura, threatening Vista Del mar hospital, that’s when my team was called in.”

Saving the hospital turned out to be a fierce firefight that lasted for hours. mukes and his men cut holes in the roof making a way for the heat to exit before the engines came in with water. ough they couldn’t save the entire

hospital, they were able to save a couple of wings and prevented surrounding homes from being torched.

From then on, it was non-stop firefighting for mukes, who worked up to 32-hour shis. While 427 homes in the city of Ventura were destroyed, mukes marvels at how many homes they managed to save. “it could have been worse — a lot worse,” he says. “And the fact that there was no loss of life, with one exception, is even more miraculous. i attribute this to our amazing law enforcement as they made sure that everyone was evacuated.”

Sadly, loss of life, 20 to be exact, did occur in the ensuing montecito mudslides, where mukes was called up for search and rescue. He came dangerously close to being the 21st victim when he fell into a sinkhole with mud up to his chest — relying on his “band of brothers” to haul him out. H

The Bitter with the Sweet When his efforts to save a victim or home fails is when mukes experiences the worst — yet strangely the best — part of his job. “it’s impossible to describe a situation like i had with parents who watched us do everything we could to save their child, but to no avail,” shares mukes. “ey would be kissing their child on the forehead as we worked, only to turn to us aer the worst possible outcome and thank us through their tears for trying. Or to have a couple stand in front of their home that has been reduced to a chimney and yet still they thank us profusely for our efforts to save their house. at is super humbling to me. And yet it’s also, in a strange way, the best part in that we get to be there to help them bring closure to the worst possible moment of their life.”

Manny Calvario: Horse Trainer, San Luis Rey Downs To many race horse trainers, the thoroughbreds they train are their children. Trainer manny Calvario, who has lived, breathed and slept horses since he was 14, is no exception.

Which is why when the lilac Fire broke out near San luis rey Downs Training Center where manny also lives, he knew his only recourse was to join the other trainers in letting their “children” loose in hopes that they would run away from the fire to safety.

“EVErYONE lOVES TO WATCH HOrSES rUN … BUT NOT WiTH FEAr.” Not every trainer was committed to that course of action.

French trainer martine Bellocq decided to stay put. But as the flames inched closer and closer, manny knew it was a lost cause. “martine, the fire is 100 feet away, you have to turn your horses loose!” he warned his fellow trainer. it was martine’s delayed decision to finally let the last horse loose — a favorite named Wild Bill Hickory — that would turn into a fateful one.

Within seconds, the flames engulfed both her and her horse.

Upon hearing the screams — a sound manny says he will never forget — he rushed into the thick black smoke and grabbed martine, pulling her out from the fire. He then covered her in a blanket to extinguish the flames, effectively saving her life.

As for manny, he is still processing the trauma of that day.

Even speaking of it causes the tears to well up. “it was only aerwards that i realized how close i was to catching on fire myself,” he shares, his voice choking. “But you don’t think

about the danger at the time — of being a so-called ‘hero’ — you just do what you have to do.” ere were many heroes that emerged from the recent SoCal disasters — some celebrated, some not. like marine Daniel Williams, who while returning from checking on his grandparents’ house, drove not away but towards the fire descending upon San luis rey to help lead terrified horses to safety. Or a montecito man who rescued a baby buried in the mud. en there were those who worked together as a “collective hero” bringing food to victims and rescuers, providing temporary shelter, rescuing animals, starting Go Fund me pages, or simply providing human comfort to those shattered by unimaginable loss.

Do It Afraid When asked to share his own idea of what a “hero” is, Captain Eric mukes has a simple definition: “Do it afraid. i feel fear every single time i go out there,” says mukes. “But i push through that fear because i know that my mission is benevolent and that knowledge leads to courage. i have lives to save and a family who needs me to come home to them, and that’s what gives me the courage to go in and do my job, and do it well.” ❖

At any one time at the Palm Garden Hotel in ousand Oaks there can be events for 200 people in the ballroom, 75-100 outside, and 25 others in the studio room. it’s hustle and bustle and it takes a well-oiled machine and an accomplished team to pull it off. “it’s pretty amazing what takes place and what they can do with one kitchen,” says Nicole Schram, sales & events manager at the hotel. at one kitchen where all the action takes place is inside Brendan’s kitchen where executive Chef Edwin Cruz masterminds all the tasks and events that include weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, corporate events, holiday parties, bat/bar mitzvahs, quinceaneras, fundraisers, reunions, team building, graduation and anniversary parties.

The Palm Garden offers 10 different venues with various seating options including a conference room for 10. There are two menus, one for special events and one for weddings.

On the special event menu are several breakfast buffet options as well as deli, soup and salad buffets, mexican, italian, BBQ, vegetarian, kids’ favorites and variety of other options. For weddings, clients often bring in outside vendors such as a wedding cake professional.

Schram says one of Chef Cruz’s specialties for any occasion is his risotto station. “at has become very popular,” Schram adds. “it’s nice to have someone cooking during an event. ere’s interaction between the chef and the guest.”

"Whether it's lobster or wild mushroom which is more of a vegetarian dish, risotto has really become a signature dish at our banquets," says Cruz. Schram adds that Cruz’s braised short ribs in a cabernet sauce is also very popular as is his sea bass with a roasted cherry sauce. Cruz adds that short ribs and strip loin are also popular choices for wedding celebrations.

Palm Garden offers several different wedding packages with a variety of venue and food selections. While most wedding meals are served buffet style, they can also accommodate guests for sit-down dining.

While he’s not particularly a chocolate lover, he loves cooking with chocolate and says when they offer their Whiskey dinners every six months or so, he tries to balance something with chocolate to complement the choice of whiskey.

Flavor is what started Cruz in the art of food.

Of El Salvadorian heritage, he was raised in ousand Oaks and began his culinary career in the ‘90s at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza where he started as a dishwasher and worked his way up to chef de cuisine. He says his interest in food was born of different cultures and flavors. “it's my passion to create dishes and menus,” says Cruz who says his interest began with creating dressings, cold hors d’oeuvres and different appetizers.

“Along with that, i was learning how to create different foods like mediterranean and French,” he adds. “it was a great feeling to create a dish and have other people enjoy it.” He says that while his favorite cuisine to cook is mediterranean like the risotto and raviolis, his passion now is to make sure all dishes have the right taste and flavor.

AROUND TOWN in Old Town lompoc you’ll find an eclectic blend of past and present with locally-owned shops, antique co-ops, eateries and small businesses lining tree-shaded streets. History buffs can opt for the Old Town Heritage Walk, a self-guided mile-long tour with 18 stops including the Andrew l. Huyck House (1890), Artesia School House (1876), lompoc museum housed in the old Carnegie library building (1911), and other landmarks with neon signs adding to the vintage ambiance. Not to be missed is Sissy’s Uptown Café, a long-standing family-run eatery in lompoc’s original post office building, where you can grab lunch, dinner and slice of homemade pie.

Old Town is also a curated outdoor art gallery with more than 30 murals depicting colorful scenes of lompoc’s heritage, flower industry, historic sites, and ethnic diversity on street corners, sides of buildings, and in alleyways. many can be seen in Art Alley across from the lompoc Valley Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center. Stop in for a map of the murals to help guide your way. lompoc’s local vibe also manifests in its dining options. Among the popular spots is the new Valle Eatery & Bar featuring cra cocktails, wood-fired pizza, and gourmet entrées showcasing locally-sourced ingredients. Chef Conrad Gonzales’ inventive pork belly tacos are a must try. Scratch Kitchen & Wine Bar is another favorite known for its farm-to-table menu prepared by chef/owner Augusto Claudio. it’s a great spot for lunch, happy hour, local beer and wines.

Another newcomer is the Hoptions Taproom and Eatery by Solvang Brewing Company offering an impressive selection of made-on-the-premises cra beers along with tasty pub food.

THE LOMPOC WINE TRAIL lompoc is a wine aficionado’s delight. e Wine Ghetto, a cluster of small local wineries and tasting rooms in an industrial park setting, houses some amazing wines, creative winemakers and the largest concentration of world-class, small-production tasting rooms in Santa Barbara County. A few blocks away in midtown are two highly acclaimed wineries — Brewer-Clion and longoria — and the lompoc Wine Factory, a production facility for local winemakers. ese winemakers are not just bottling some of California’s best Pinots and Chardonnays but an array of exceptional sparkling wines. Flying Goat Cellars launched the lompoc sparkling wine scene in 2005 with Goat Bubbles and has produced 11 consecutive vintages — all hand-made in their lompoc Wine Ghetto facility. Since then, lompoc-based Fiddlehead Cellars, Kessler-Haak, Palmina Wines and other local producers have jumped on the bubbly bandwagon. H

For an adrenaline rush, try tandem skydiving with an experienced instructor from Skydive Santa Barbara at lompoc Airport. During the jump, you'll see breath-taking views of the coastline, farmland and hillsides below.

Ocean Beach Park & Sanctuary, renowned for bird watching and photography, is 13 miles west of Old Town on Ocean Avenue. En route, detour onto Union Avenue where you'll find flower fields abloom with vivid color from April to September. rotating varieties include stock, larkspur, delphinium, bells of ireland, and sweet pea.

Continue to Ocean Beach at the mouth of the Santa Ynez river where a tranquil lagoon attracts large varieties of birds. Beach access is closed march 1 - September 30 due to the Snowy Plover nesting season, but you can still enjoy the peaceful view and amenities at the park.

Another must for your itinerary is Jalama Beach Park and the absolutely spectacular 30-minute drive through ever-changing views of magnificent working ranches, rolling vineyards and stunning hillsides.

Jalama is a popular spot for picnics, surfing, kite surfing, bird watching, nature photography, fishing and camping. many protected native plants also grow within the park. Come for lunch and head to the Jalama Beach Grill for its famous Jalama Burger.

OU LOVE TO FLY AROUND AND DEFEAT GRAVITY,” SAYS HOUSE OF AIR CO-FOUNDER DAVE SCHAEFFER. e simple reason for the company's success is that

everyone loves trampolines and aerial based activities, he explains.

Originally from ousand Oaks in Southern California, Schaeffer says they chose to locate their new adrenaline park in the San Diego area since it is “the beating heart of action sports.” last September, the new House of Air opened in Carlsbad with 34,000 square feet of 10 exciting activities including open trampoline jump time, aerial and physical training on trampolines, trampoline dodgeball, rock climbing, trampoline basketball dunk, fitness classes and other activities.

“First, there's the big main court called e matrix where there is just open jumping and anyone can come in and jump. We’ve also got two dodge ball courts which have become extremely popular in San Francisco with both kids and adults,” he continues. He describes it as a basketball court made out of trampolines – a floor of trampolines pushed together.

“e walls are angled back and also made of trampolines, so you can bounce across the court from one trampoline to the next and then bounce off the wall and come flying back,” Schaeffer says. “en you turn that into a game by drawing a line down the middle of the court, and you have two teams throwing dodge balls at each other and bouncing around. it’s super fun.”

Two big trampolines have basketball hoops over them so you can “act out your michael Jordan or leBron James fantasies,” Schaeffer continues. “You can jump really high and dunk that ball. One is low for kids and one high for adults.” ere's also the slackline – a tightrope made of flat webbing that is suspended so you can try to walk across an airbag. Fall off and it's only a couple of feet. Next to that is a padded 1-1/2 foot wide joust beam where you and your bestie can battle one another with padded jousting sticks and see who can first knock the other off the beam onto the air bag. ere's also a 30-foot climbing wall which allows 10 people to climb at one time.

Not to be missed is the highlight of the park – the Drop Zone – where Schaeffer promises you'll get a real adrenaline rush. it’s a 20-foot tall tower with a platform from which you jump off into a 10-foot wide air bag. “it’s basically a free fall into a really large stuntman-style air bag,” Schaeffer explains, adding that they introduced the "stuntman" kind of air bag to the aerial-based industry. “We had the first one in our San Francisco park in 2012,” Schaeffer says. “A lot of parks were going with foam pits. We felt air bags were a lot cleaner, more sophisticated, more technical and hopefully a lot safer alternative.” e idea for the first location in San Francisco came in the early 2000s aer Schaeffer taught an adult class on how to execute snowboarding and skiing tricks on a trampoline. en during a ride home

from Tahoe, he and his buddy, Paul mcGeehan, came up with the business plan for the House of Air. ey mulled it over for quite some time. it was tough leaving great jobs, family and friends. A bit hesitant about starting a new business, they moved ahead carefully. “We realized that the two hours we spent jumping on the trampoline were the best hours we spent every week, and we wanted to give that to everyone,” Schaeffer says. “We wanted to give the X Game experience to the public.” in 2010, they opened the San Francisco location, and it worked. Safety was one reason why.

House of Air keeps kids under age seven separate from the others. For ages three through six, there's a cordoned-off area with a large bounce house and dodge ball court. if they’re over 40 pounds, they may enjoy the climbing wall. e facility also has a full-service pizza café and space to rent for birthday parties, corporate functions, fundraisers and other special events. ere are also dodge ball leagues, tournaments, and classes.

“On any day that's a holiday, there is a kids’ camp as well,” Schaeffer says. He emphasizes that they hope the House of Air is not just a place to have fun but also a skills progression-based facility. “We want you to come here, do something and think, ‘Wow, i want to get better at that,’” he adds. ❖

From 1852 to 1882 mendocino served as the primary supplier of redwood lumber to California and was its main lumber source well into the 1920s. Today the area is known as the North Coast’s most exciting recreational spot. Although the drive can be long, it’s certainly worth the time and effort. it’s at least a 2-hour trek by car from the nearest airport, but the journey is just as captivating as the arrival. e route offers spectacular vistas of California’s northern coast with landscapes that vary from flourishing meadows to dramatic ocean bluffs. e most common course to reach mendocino is through Highway 128, and just about the time drivers feel they may need to stop the car and stretch, they’ll find Lula Tasting Room, located off the highway at 2800 Guntly road. is boutique winery, located in the Anderson Valley, features award-winning handcraed wines. Guests are greeted by the winery dog, Honey, as they enter the 22-acre property to enjoy wine-tasting at the redwood bar. e knowledgeable staff is friendly and happy to enlighten guests about the wines as well as the history of the area. e pet-friendly tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. ere is an abundance of activities to enjoy once in mendocino County, but the most unique is a ride on the 131-yearold Skunk Train. is historic train runs through tunnels and over bridges along the coastal redwood route as a narrator describes the fascinating history of this famous logging region. A concession stand on board offers munchies and fresh popcorn, so drinks, cocktails, beer and wine. e train, which has operated since 1885, has been called one of the “Top 10 Family Activities in Southern California” by National Geographic Traveler magazine.

e easiest way to get to mendocino from Southern California is to fly into Santa rosa airport on Alaska Airlines, rent a car and drive two and a half hours. For a more luxurious flight experience (and for about the same price as a commercial airline), try Jet Suite X, which flies out of Burbank to Oakland. another brutal January Southern California winter day where it doesn’t look like it will even reach 80 degrees, the Academy Awards are on the horizon. e nominations just came out, and the actual show isn’t until march 4, but the buzz — and the controversy — has started.

When i was a kid growing up, the Academy Awards were about who was nominated and who won. About 90 percent of the focus was on Best Picture (there used to be only five, but now everyone gets nominated), Best Actor and Best Actress — and how long before those sexist titles are removed and it becomes a single category? ere were those who

paid attention to Best Director and maybe Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, but aer that, it got pretty obscure.

Best Original Score is a category. i scoured the list, hoping to find a Best Unoriginal Score category, which would have really been fun. But, alas, it was not to be. Best Sound mixing and Best Sound Editing are two separate categories. What’s the difference between the two? i doubt there’s much, since the same five films are nominated for both. in total, there are 24 different Oscar categories, and far more people could list the Seven Dwarfs, or the Chicago Seven, than list all 24.

But let’s be clear about what the Academy Awards have become — a political litmus test. e 2018 Academy Awards aren’t just about “the best.”

ey’re about inclusion, about the “it’s about time” discussion. How many women, how many African-Americans, how many socially relevant films, and on, and on, and on. A quick search of the news shows far more articles being written about the diversity factor in the nominations than about the actual quality of the work. maybe it has to be that way, at least for a while, but it takes the edge off of what used to be a good old-fashioned popularity contest.

For me, i quit watching years ago when you started to need a scorecard to know who as wearing what color pin and what cause they were promoting or supporting. if this year’s Academy Awards show follows recent trends, and there is no reason to expect it won’t, no good acceptance speech will go unpunished, unless there are strong references to sexual harassment (bad) and President Trump (worse). i remember, fondly, when movies were an escape from our everyday lives, from our troubles, from the nation’s troubles and politics. You slipped into a theater, watched a two-hour movie (or if you’re old enough to remember, a double feature), laughed a little, cried a little, and maybe were moved or motivated by the subject matter. And then, once a year, the family would gather around to watch impossibly beautiful, impossibly wealthy people stroll elegantly down the red carpet and accept their awards, or their defeats, with grace and style, and we’d all move on. e beginning of the end, or the beginning of the beginning if you like the direction the Academy Awards have taken, took place in 1973. if you don’t remember, look up Sacheen littlefeather.

Anyway, i just looked at the 2018 list and there are nine Best Picture nominees. if i want to make sure i’ve seen all of them before march 4, i only have to see … nine more.
