T’S ENTIRELY COINCIDENTAL THAT OUR Home and Design issue happens to fall into our editorial cycle during the months we celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. But since many of us derive our concept of “home” from the place we shared life with our parents or the one in which we live with our children and loved ones, it seems quite suitable. Even though as a child my family moved numerous times and most relocations were stressful for my brother and me, I have warm memories of each place we called home. It isn’t because the physical structures had any particular significance, but the experiences we shared as a family contributed to my psychological and social development and helped shape me emotionally. My parents have now both passed away, but I often recall the persistent effort they exerted to fill our home with unconditional love and support. As I raised my own children, the tone of our home was always of great “IT TAKES HANDS concern as I sought to institute a secure and stable setting where each child TO BUILD A knew she was cared for and valued. My daughters, now adults and establishHOUSE, BUT ONLY ing homes of their own, are seeking to create warm and stable environments HEARTS CAN for their respective families. BUILD A HOME.” Even though a home has more to do with human experiences than AUTHOR UNKNOWN material construction, a well-designed residence, whether lavish or modest, is always admirable. Those who live there, as well as those who visit, appreciate the time and creativity involved in forming a house into a home. We take a look at a few such properties in this, our Home and Design edition. From unique castles to Frank Gehry’s work and Leonard Fenton’s renovation, we explore some notable and historic architecture throughout Southern California. We also examine a few extraordinary designers who have helped to establish the Southland as one of the most coveted real estate communities in the nation. This issue also reveals luxury rental opportunities (in case you feel like experiencing some of those amazing homes personally!) as well as uncovers trails where hikers can enjoy nature and view landmark buildings along the way. We hope you find this May/June issue inspiring, and wish you a Mother’s and Father’s Day surrounded by those you love. Warm wishes,

ESCAPE BACK INTO THE GOLDEN ERA
On an acre hidden behind high gates in the heart of Palm Springs’ 13 legendary movie colony neighborhood is Sandacre, a Spanish estate reminiscent of Hollywood’s golden era dating back to 1933. While retaining its historical grandeur, amenities have been updated to today's luxury standards. The great room features elegant beamed ceilings, Spanish-style doors while the living area and other rooms house many technological toys including a home-theater system, media center, Wi-Fi and more. Sandacre’s magnificent five bedrooms include the master with a four-poster bed to four-poster bed and fireplace. The second and third bedrooms interconnect while the fourth has a double bed. It is rumored that Marilyn Monroe, when visiting, preferred the comfort of the fifth bedroom in the tower. The tiled patio with views of the San Jacinto Mountains features a pool, hot tub, stylish deck furniture, poolside cabana and a second covered patio. You can also test your skills on the private tennis court then unwind during an al fresco feast from the grill and after-dinner drinks around the outdoor fireplace under the stars. Nearby is Palm Canyon Drive with its upscale shops, art galleries, dining spots and vibrant nightlife. And, of course, the area's many golf courses await. Represented by Outvilla by Luxury Retreats, the property accommodates 10 guests over the age of 25. Pets considered. www.outvillas.com/villa.aspx?villa=107070 | 866.205.1624

IX DECADES AFTER OPENING, THE ICONIC TOWER WITH THE STACK-OF-RECORDS SHAPE REMAINS A CULTURAL ICON AND A HUB FOR THE RECORDING INDUSTRY’S BRIGHTEST STARS. Designed by Welton Becket and Associates, Capitol Records would be the first circular office building in the world. Construction on the opulent 13-story structure began in 1955 and was completed in 1956; and from the start, it not only became an instantly recognizable landmark, it was a mecca for the hottest acts in the business. Peggy Lee, Keely Smith, Bobby Darin, Kay Starr and Dean Martin were only some of the mega-talented performers on the label’s star-studded roster. It would become synonymous with Frank Sinatra — most notably Studio A — where the Chairman of the Board belted out innumerable hits, many of which were accompanied by the flawless orchestral arrangements of Nelson Riddle. During the 1960s it was the Beatles and the Beach Boys — bands that not only recorded at Capitol Studios, but whose music would define an entire era and gain unprecedented popularity as the decades went on. In later years, everyone from Tina Turner, Elton John and the Beastie Boys, to 50 Cent and the Foo Fighters would record under the Capitol label. More recently, it’s the place Ringo Starr celebrated his 75th birthday and when a major renovation was completed in Studio A, Paul McCartney was the first artist to make music in the newly refurbished space. Now, the iconic tower with the 90foot spire — its bright light still blinking out the word “Hollywood” in Morse code — will celebrate its sixth decade by opening its doors to the public, hosting the first-ever Studio Open Day. The festival-style event will take place May 21 and 22 and will include H

Vinyl Fest (for vinyl records enthusiasts), tours of the recording facilities and even the opportunity to work the equipment; and although the festivities will commemorate 60 years, the legacy of the West Coast’s first record label goes back even further. Record store impresario Glenn Wallichs would team up with former Paramount Pictures producer and songwriter, Buddy DeSylva and composer Johnny Mercer, officially launching the Capitol Records label in 1942. Situated directly above Wallichs’ record shop, Capitol Records and Wallichs Music City became the go-to spot for all-things music, hosting record signings and other events. By the time the tower was completed in 1956, Capitol Records had gained major momentum as a label. Though it would enjoy decades of unprecedented success, it would eventually face a downturn. Former Columbia Records President, Steve Barnett, stepped in to run the label in 2012. He set about reestablishing Capitol Records as a creative brand that stands as much for its music super-talent and state-of-the-art technology as it does for its legacy. A renovation would not only give the inside of the tower a facelift (new paint and décor as well as new studio consoles, speakers and other upgrades), the iconic music label would sign new talent — including Grammy winner Sam Smith (who recently earned the moniker “The New Face of Soul”) and Aussie boy band 5 Seconds of Summer — and merge with Universal Music Group, a partnership that’s reinvigorated Capitol Records. Today, the newly restored entertainment landmark is still home to the top names in the business (Mary J. Blige and Katy Perry) and is one of the few-remaining labels with its own studio. And although a major renovation took place, the studio maintains a vast collection of legacy recording equipment, still perfectly intact, with Smith and John Legend often requesting Sinatra’s original microphone. 7 Capitol’s Vice President of Studios, Paula Salvatore, says, “Our legacy is defined by our unprecedented history of classic recording artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and so many more. We’re often referred to as ‘The house that Nat built’; we want to balance that legacy with the quality of our vintage gear, but also with technical excellence and state-ofthe-art advancements.” Here’s to another 60 years of making music that’s “Unforgettable.” ❖

HEN YOU HEAR THE WORD “CASTLE,” YOU MIGHT IMMEDIATELY THINK OF STONE-SPIRALING RELICS OF ANTIQUITY THAT SERVE AS REMINDERS OF A BYGONE ERA OF HUMANITY WHEN VASSALS, LORDS, AND FIEFS RULED THE LAND. CASTLES
WHERE: Palm Desert
The Desert Castle in Palm Desert is one of the foremost
vacation retreats in the area. The 7-bedroom, 7.5-bath mansion is what opulent and lavish dreams are made of. The castle is situated rather unexpectedly on the 18th fairway of the DESERT SPRINGS GOLF COURSE. The main house is beige in color and wonderfully rustic in design, with plenty of palm trees and welcoming archways for visitors. At night, the castle lights up with an attractive orange incandescence that infuses the observer with inspiration. Inside the GREAT HALL of the property is a particularly classic overhead mural on the vaulted ceiling featuring women (of possibly the Baroque era) playing instruments and dancing, in addition to a loving couple holding their babies. The living room, moreover, is spacious with an open view of the verdant patio. There is, of course, the dining room with gold-plated chairs, bedrooms/beds with ornate-column wood designs and bathtubs carved out of marble. Not to mention, there is a pool/spa replete with a waterfall. www.desertcastle.com

The Magic Castle
THE ACADEMY OF MAGICAL ARTS
WHERE: Hollywood
Opened on January 2, 1963, the Magic Castle is one of those exclusive places, with a strictly-adhered-to dress code, that you hear about, but unfortunately can't attend and witness firsthand if not for being a member (there are only around 5,000 in all) or receiving an invite from one who is. If you are one of the lucky ones, you'll enter the heart of the roughly 20,000 square-foot establishment once you tell an owl statue next to a bookcase in the lobby to "Open Sesame." From there, you'll be among five wood-shined bars, including one from the 1969 film “Hello, Dolly!, and find yourself nestled inside an ambiance with furniture primarily imported from abroad. Furthermore, you'll be among the vintage HARRY HOUDINI seance room (which costs $1,000 per person to have dinner in) his well-kept artifacts, including his old handcuffs, milk jug, and one of his straitjackets. The origins of DISNEYLAND'S HAUNTED MANSION is also explained at the castle with the actual prototype, crafted by MAGICIAN MASTER GRACEY, for the famous scene where Victorian-era ghosts are circling a candlelit dinner. Of course, there is the magical sleight of hand by a lineup of legendary connoisseurs of magic, which changes on a weekly basis. Four rooms in total and two bars (The Close-Up Gallery, Parlour of Prestidigitation, and The Palace of Mystery, The Peller Theatre, Hat and Hare Pub, and W.C. Fields Bar) house the acts. One tenured magician at the castle who must be seen is the fantastically charismatic, playing cardillusionist, BODINE BALASCO. Certainly, the dinner offered at the restaurant on the premises is fabulous, highlighted by the calamari and garlic/rosemary-marinated and the incredibly tender Colorado Rack of Lamb. www.magiccastle.com

Standing since 1921, after 12 years of conception, design (taken from Middle-Eastern and Asian influences), and construction that were commissioned by owner and San Diego fashion designer, AMY STRONG, this castle features 27 rooms and an intercom system. It is also known for a gorgeous windmill (historically used for pumping water from the underground springs) and a blessed roof, the tiles of which were borrowed from the San Gabriel Mission. Today, the castle and its surrounding property are primarily used for weddings, receptions, and parties. The original essence of the castle has been left mostly untouched, as well, given the fact that the only difference in the last 95 years since the castle was completed are modern amenities.

Many dream of the perfect wedding on a peaceful, private hideaway far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but very few find the ideal location. The Enchanted Forest Castle is that and more with cobblestone walkways and a stone-brick design right out of the KING ARTHUR epoch; in fact, the only thing missing is a moat. But it does have a helipad for those who want to arrive or depart in style with a helicopter or small plane. Having been the vision of a husband and wife team since 1998, it satisfies goals of grandeur for aspiring spouses between the months of May and November. That being said, weddings aren't the only rite of passage that transpire at the castle, either, as it has been also known to host birthday parties, anniversaries, and school proms. www.thepromiseweddingvenue.com â?–

The key, however, to creating balance is to build your life on a rock-solid foundation that is based on your values and principles. Taking time for introspection and planning will reap great rewards. Here are some tips for guidance.
1/
Building a foundation. Clarify your values and principles in life. Understand why each is important to you because you can’t adhere to something that you don’t believe in. Establishing boundaries and clarifying expectations becomes much easier when you are self-respecting and make choices accordingly.
4/
Recognizing and identifying your own emotions. This is the essence of emotional intelligence. The ability to handle your feelings appropriately and exercise emotional selfcontrol while interacting with others is key to building trusting relationships and creating balance. Awareness of other people’s non-verbal cues, listening deeply, having empathy and concern for other’s needs and feelings are the essence of social intelligence. They help to ensure smooth interpersonal relationships.

5/

6/
Defining goals. Establish a few specific life goals (short and long term). You are much more likely to achieve them if they are clearly defined. Keeping the main thing as the main thing! In other words, focus like a laser on a few priorities. Don’t be

deterred or distracted from addressing the primary issues or goals. Remember, not everything can be the top priority, but you can accomplish what you are willing to work for you just can’t do it all, all at once.
Understanding that people need people. We all know that we can’t do every job by ourselves, even if we want to. When you do help others, clarify expectations and establish appropriate boundaries. Communicating clearly. The ancient Chinese proverb, “A journey of
a thousand miles begins with a single step” is similar to how each conversation and each interaction with someone matters. Earning trust and respect is key to developing meaningful and lasting relationships.
7/
Unplugging. Take a break from technology - really! Designate a specific time to unplug. No car radio. No headphones. No television. No emails, computer or games. No cell phone or texting. Better yet, take a physical break for at least a few days to refresh and restore.
You can achieve balance in your life! But remember, don’t be seduced by other people’s urgencies, demands and requests. Decide how, when, where and with whom to invest your precious time, talent and energy. Create a life that really works for you and is meaningful, fulfilling and joyful! ❖

MALIBU CREEK STATE PARK Level: Easy Miles: 3.3 Elevation Gain: 580 Feet
1 PHOTOGRAPHY BY BENNY HADDAD
w With more than 8,000 acres of rolling tallgrass plains, rugged peaks, and oak savannahs, Malibu Creek State Park is a beautiful and diverse hiking destination. This hike is an easy, family friendly trek following the Grasslands Trail to the Rock Pool. The trail starts from an unmarked parking area on Mulhulland Highway, just West of Las Virgenes Road and provides a gentle and scenic stroll over rolling hills and the eponymous grasslands. After rounding a hill it connects to the High Road. Overhung with shade-providing oak trees and following beside Malibu Creek, the High Road’s level trail gives you time to enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains and chat with your companions. Stay left at the fork to continue on to Rock Pool Trail. If you’re lucky, as you pass by Ape’s Wall you’ll have a chance to watch the rock climbers maneuvering their way up this popular climbing spot. At the end of the trail is a cool rock pool surrounded by high cliffs. While it can be a very tempting swimming destination in the hot summer months, you should exercise caution. Injuries are common in the shallow rocky pools. A quick foot soak can be very refreshing though, before heading back to your car. H

w For those of you looking for a slightly more challenging trip, we recommend a hike to the top of Sandstone Peak. Just on the edge of Ventura County, Sandstone peak is the highest summit in the Santa Monica Mountains, and those who reach the top on a clear day can enjoy panoramic views of The Conejo Valley, Malibu, and the Pacific Ocean. The six mile loop trail starts from the Sandstone Peak parking area on Yerba Buena Road in Malibu. A short entrance trail quickly takes you to a junction. Turn right to follow the Mishe Mokwa Trail. This beautiful and meandering trail takes you through a landscape of coastal sage scrub, over a stream, through a forest, and past views of the Echo Cliffs and Balance Rock. As you approach the end of the loop, a small wooden sign will point the way up a short rugged spur trail to the summit. Bask in the fantastic views of California’s Coast before completing the loop.

MOUNT BALDY Level: Very Difficult Miles: 11.3 Elevation Gain: 3,950 Feet

w For advanced hikers looking for a leg-busting climb through subalpine scenery to claim a coveted peak, Mount San Antonio is a hiking destination that can’t be missed. At 10,064 feet Mount Baldy, as it is colloquially known, is the highest point in Los Angeles County. The most popular route up Mount Baldy is a loop going up the Baldy Bowl – Ski Hut Trail and coming down the Devil’s Backbone Trail to Baldy Notch. You’ll want to start your day early to avoid overheating in the summer sun on the sparsely shaded mountain slopes. Park by the trailhead on Mount Baldy Road just past Manker Flats Campground. You’ll quickly see why this hike is so popular as you pass by the lovely San Antonio Falls only half a mile into it. Keep your eyes peeled as you continue past this for the narrow unmarked trail on your left that will take you up to the Ski Hut (a great place to stop for a breather) and past the Baldy Bowl. Your reward for conquering this steep trail is a treeless summit with 360-degree views of Southern California. Be careful as you descend the exposed and vertigo inducing Devil’s Backbone Trail. This trail is not for those with a fear of heights. You can celebrate with a beer and food at the Baldy Notch Ski Shack. Continue back down the trail when you’re ready, or save your knees the beating by buying a one-way ticket down the ski lift, which is open on weekends. ❖

If it can be styled, LUIGI IRAUZQUI is doing it. He’s styling homes, clothes, film sets, parties, furniture, accessories, vacations. If it exists, he is inspired to design with an abundance of energy. The world contains limitless possibilities.

His dreams of designing weren’t realized until he broke free of the bonds of his father’s career expectations, though, while growing up in South America and Europe. While his mother was creative and designed shoes, Irauzqui allowed his banker/architect father to choose his direction. “He gave me an option. He said, ‘You are either a doctor or a lawyer or come work for me in South America.’” Irauzqui went into law for three years and then transferred into economics in London. He was plucked to be a model, while walking down a Paris street, throwing him into an entirely new world. “At the end of the day, if you love art, it will find a way to find you,” Irauzqui says. H

Twenty-two years ago he came to Los Angeles and first worked at an advertising agency. Then he got in on the ground floor of the home flipping game. “That is what prompted me into going into design,” Irauzqui says. “I would design my own homes. I would completely gut them, put them on the market and every time I would sell the house, I would get five or six clients.” At the same time, he was designing sets and film premieres where he was meeting celebrities. Drew Barrymore was the first celebrity who hired Irauzqui’s company at the time to design her premiere for “Never Been Kissed.” They went on to design the event for “Donnie Darko,” which she also produced, followed by the “Ocean’s Eleven” premiere.

R A U Z Q U I After that company disbanded, Irauzqui formed Cassavecchia Design Concepts in 1997, which later transitioned into the current Casavecchia Design Group. He was working on a home in Beechwood Canyon one day when Ben Stiller happened to walk in and admire the library he had designed. Word of mouth brought him to the attention of such actors as Reese Witherspoon and Christina Ricci. He also designed the entire last season of “The Hills.” Irauzqui says his goal is to turn blank spaces into amazing spaces. “At the end of the day, my passion has been to conceptualize a room, keep an open mind and always try new things,” he

explains. “Because my orientation hasn’t come from formal training, I’m always relying on my sense of aesthetics and my curiosity for color.” He says his Peruvian roots often influence his choices in color. He has a line of cushions coming out soon in reds and pinks and the colors with which he was raised. Color may come in the form of an accent - “I love putting a dark, grey hallway with a moroccan lamp with color in it, in the middle,” he says. He likes using art and mixing it up traditional, sketches, Dali, antiques and whatever fits the space. “Eclectic is the word I use to describe
my interior design concept,” he says. “Houses do not have to be boring. I don’t want a house to be so sterile that you can’t live in it. At the same time, it has to be luxurious, have textures and colors, but be livable and practical. It has to be inviting and intimate. Most important, it has to reflect the client’s personality, not mine.” He specializes in outdoor/indoor spaces because, he says, that’s what Southern California is all about. “We are privileged and blessed to live in a place like this where you can open your window and have bougainvillea right over your window and the pool outside. I live in a house surrounded by gardens. Every window is open all the time. I love listening to nature. I love that a squirrel runs by. “I pay a lot of attention to landscaping because that’s what brings the outdoors in,” he says. “The fact that you can have this weather is wonderful for designers. The sun is an oasis for designers - from San Diego to Santa Barbara to Ojai. There is something so distinctive about the landscape and trees. You don’t have that on the East Coast where everything has to be cozier when I decorate. We are so blessed here.” For Irauzqui the sky’s the limit. He’s developing a line of cufflinks, a line of cashmere and llama travel blankets and candles, as well as a line of flatware and glassware with his husband. On his list of to-do’s is designing a hotel - there have been offers, but not yet the perfect one. In development is a lifestyle show called “The Style Hunter” where he and his team travel the world to find the perfect piece to finish off a project. “Or hunting for a fashion accessory or for the best, not well known destination,” Irauzqui says. “It’s traveling abroad to find the best of.” As international style editor at Harper’s Bazaar Interiors since 2013, traveling extensively helped open his eyes to the big world. He explains how that translates into lifestyle design. “It’s not anymore just about where you live or how you live, it’s where you dine, where you vacation, what you drink, what cigars you smoke,” Irauzqui explains. “The definition of style has become much broader.” He has redefined the term “design” to include everything from a client’s travel, wardrobe, to travel accessories and their dining experience. “Design is limitless,” Irauzqui says. ❖ SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LIFE

FRANK GEHRY CONSTRUCTING THE EXTRAORDINARY
The corner of Sunset & Havenhurst in Los Angeles is about to go down in history. 8150 Sunset is already across the street from the legendary Chateau Marmont on the most famous stretch of boulevard in the world, but now the southeast side of this intersection is being “utterly transformed” by a $300 million mixed-use project designed by architect FRANK GEHRY. F R A N K Whether you’re familiar with his name or not, you’ve seen Gehry’s work, and you know his curvy, reality-bending aesthetic. He’s the visionaire behind world-famous attractions such as The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles, the Experience Music Project in Seattle and Prague’s surreal Dancing House. In 2010, the World Architecture Survey cited his contemporary works as among the most important in architecture, and Vanity Fair named him “the most important architect of our age.” It’s no surprise that when Gehry’s name is on something, people pay attention. And the kind of clout he brings also eases minds. He was actually hired onto 8150 Sunset after an outcry from the neighborhood’s residents over the original designs for the lot. When Gehry was brought on board, the project was elevated to a work of art before the famed architect even revealed his breath-taking vision. Gehry has achieved something few architects have: universal notoriety and name recognition. His brand has extended beyond architecture and landed him jobs designing jewelry for Tiffany & Co., furniture, and a bottle for Wyborowa Vodka. In 2005, he even appeared on an episode of The Simpsons. A full 10 years after standing under such a massive pop-culture spotlight, 2015 proved Gehry is more relevant than ever, both culturally and in the design and architecture industry. Starting in September, LACMA hosted a beautiful retrospective on the architect’s career. In the same influx of recognition, Paul Goldberger also released his groundbreaking biography on the legend: “Building Art: The Life and Work of Frank Gehry.” Though he was born in Canada, Los Angeles is proud to claim Gehry as one of its own. He became a Southern California native after relocating to attend university in 1947. Gehry established his first practice in 1962, and from his Los Angeles office, has had a transformational effect in every area he’s worked, changing the way the entire architecture industry operates, evolving the look of modern design, and molding the aesthetic of Southern California, itself. Christopher Mercier, founder of (fer) studio and a former Gehry associate, said, “His work really took what was happening to the 40s and 50s in terms of early modernism and retranslated it into something more eclectic. [More uniquely] Los Angeles.”
(fer) studio partner Doug Pierson, another Gehry alumni, said, “[Gehry has] had so much influence on the look of Southern California over the decades. But he [was a leader] in the re-interpretation of modernism. He [is largely responsible for] the shift from typical modernism to what we have now.” The theme of transformation comes up over and over in Gehry’s history, something deeply entwined in his legacy. He has been credited with changing the way the entire industry functions, evolving the design process from simple drawing and scale-modeling to a largely digital artform. His innovations in this realm haven’t just increased workflow efficiency, it’s actually expanded the scope of what can physically be built. The Guggenheim Museum
in Spain, the aesthetic progenitor of Los Angeles’ famed Walt Disney Concert Hall, was only possible because of Gehry’s use of design software originally meant for developing aeronautics and fighter jets. Mercier was actually an associate at Gehry’s firm during the pioneering process of creating that building. He says, “When we [first started] designing Bilbao, we actually drew the initial sections of the building by hand because we didn’t have enough autoCAD stations, and there wasn’t enough digital work being done yet. [But] during that project [the design process actually] evolved to become fully digital.”

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LIFE
G E H R Y It’s this innovation, rapid adaptation and the unique beauty that resulted from it, that catapulted Gehry into international acclaim in 1997. New Yorker Magazine hailed the Spanish Guggenheim as “a masterpiece of the twentieth century,” and the amazing work he had been doing on Southern California projects like Santa Monica Place, the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and the California Museum of Science and Industry became worldclass attractions. It’s also when he began to make his biggest contributions to the architecture industry as a whole. “I think more important than the aesthetic contributions is the way [Gehry] developed

how computers and digital technology could be used in building what we thought were unbuildable forms,” said Mercier. Still, in spite of Gehry’s revolutionary work, he hasn’t totally abandoned the basics. Pierson, who was with Gehry’s firm until 2005, recalled some of the fundamentals he learned from working with the master. He said, “Pretty much every building in Gehry’s office is built from a model. You’re constantly building models. And those models are checked against a digital format. If you make a rendering, and a 3D computer model and a physical model, each model will tell you little bit different story about the building. You ultimately go back to the physical model for the ultimate verification.” Gehry’s renown is worldwide, but he seems to be sticking close to home these days. Besides the 8150 Sunset project, Gehry is leading the design for The Children’s Institute headquarters, which (fer) studios will carry through its subsequent phases. He’s also overseeing a massive overhaul of the Los Angeles river. With almost 100 projects to his name, the majority have been located right here in the sunshine capital of the world. Gehry’s aesthetic may have evolved from the eclectic modernism the region is known for, but he’s undeniably defined the look of Southern California for more than half a century. ❖

ARTEMESIA LEONARD FENTON’S HOLLYWOOD HILLS MASTERPIECE

LEONARD FENTON (CQ)
“I peeled it off and underneath, in solid ink, was beautiful artwork. It was old and beautiful. It made an impression on me,” says Fenton. That’s his earliest memory of falling in love with things old and beautiful. It’s not surprising then, that he would become a restoration and design expert, preserving and restoring grand homes and estates. Without a doubt, his masterpiece is Artemesia, the legendary, 13,000 square foot home atop the Hollywood Hills. The 1913 mansion is the largest Craftsman that’s still a residence. Fenton bought the house in 1987, when he was just 24 and had started his own advertising company. Fenton says he had been looking for a house for a couple of years when he heard about Artemesia. When he first laid eyes on the exterior, it was “monolithic, dark brown, and had no gradation between architectural elements. “It looked like a Artemesia is for someone sophisticated horror movie house,” says Fenton, who admits that he didn’t and artistic. It’s a very particular property.” know anything about Craftsman style back then - only that the house reminded him of what he’d seen in Oslo, Norway. Perusing the outside, he was disappointed. But everything changed the moment he walked through the doors. “It was sophisticated, Elizabethan, classical. I decided to buy it immediately. I didn’t think I was embarking on a major, multi-year restoration project. I was a boy. I thought I might work on it during the weekend and be finished in a few months,” says Fenton, laughing at his naiveté. H

A R T E M E S I A With eight bedrooms, two master suites, seven bathrooms, six fireplaces, carriage house, gate house, fireplace pavilion, upper terrace, ballroom terrace, sleeping porches, ponds, patios, walking paths, the to-do list was long. The elaborate restoration would take more than two decades. “There hadn’t been much maintenance since 1939. But on the plus side, no one had remodeled, so it was a virgin house. It was like being in a time machine,” says Fenton. His goal was to retain Artemesia as a virgin house, but updated for modern living, with sophisticated technology, without destroying it in the process. To say that the renovation was a process is an understatement. Men on scaffolds spent 8-10 months stripping with a nontoxic solution and then coated with an environmentally friendly stain, that ugly brown color on the exterior. It took more than two years before color and painting would satisfy Fenton’s high standard. There was partial rotting on the outside of the home and his crew went through an intricate, scientifically and technically complicated process grinding new redwood to save the beams and to make new beams look like old. Another big part of the restoration was the carriage house. “I wasn’t sure that it wouldn’t fall down,” says Fenton. “We built a new box inside with decorative brick work to help stabilize and protect the building.” ENTRY HALL Perhaps the biggest challenge, he says, was finding smart contractors with solutions. “The issue is that most contractors don’t do museum quality restoration on homes. They get in and KITCHEN out of a project. Some are into demolishing,” says Fenton. He wanted to waterproof the terrace and keep the 400 tiles on his patio. “I didn’t want to disassemble the terrace, but I couldn’t find anyone who thought they would be able to maintain the original tiles. I figured out how to do it with small saws and other tools. I had to teach a couple of guys how to do it. I told them to take as long as they needed, to go inch by inch because I didn’t want any broken tiles. My guys spent months on their hands and knees and only broke two tiles, which was okay because I had a few spares,” says Fenton, who for many years during the renovation continued to run his business. It was only five years ago when he sold his successful business to Microsoft that he decided to beef up the project and added more crew. “I made it my full-time job.” Of all the work, the kitchen is a special point of pride, says Fenton of the last of the renovations that were completed more than a year ago. With Artemesia, restored and now “art you can live in”, with its coffered ceilings, mahogany paneling, silk tapestry, built-in 1913 Murray Harris pipe organ, Fenton, who shared the home with his wife until her death, is satisfied and ready to move on to his next great project. He put the house up for sale about a year ago for just under $10 million.

I see deer walking on my property,” says Fenton. He plans to stay in the area, he loves Griffith Park. He believes a modest 3,000 square foot Craftsman house will do. “I don’t need all this space. When you forget something in this house, you need to leave bread crumbs as a trail to find your way back.” Is he disappointed that someone didn’t immediately snap up what has been a big part of his life’s work? “Artemesia is for someone sophisticated and artistic. SCLM: You’re the number one sales team in the area here and have sold more than 200 properties in this community – where do most of your clients come from?
Keith and Arlene: Our largest draw is the San Fernando Valley market, followed by Santa Clarita, Valencia, Ventura County and Bakersfield. When people come here from Los Angeles they are blown away because the harbor is so vast and lovely. Channel Islands Harbor is an hour from Los Angeles, so it’s easy to get here then quickly get back home.
CHANNEL ISLANDS BEACHFRONT AND HARBOR LIVING MORE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIANS
are buying second homes as weekend properties. The beach is always a big draw, but the astronomical home prices in most coastal communities make this option cost-prohibitive. The Channel Islands harbor area in Ventura County offers exceptional value in beachfront and harbor living and the easy access makes that community a desirable choice. Southern California Life magazine caught up with the leading experts in the Channel Islands real estate market, Arlene and Keith Beckwith, to get their take on this unique seaside region. SCLM: Who are the primary residents in those beautiful Channel Islands harbor homes?
Keith and Arlene: This area is a big second home market so we have a lot of weekenders. More than 40% of our buyers are second-home buyers and a number of them have purchased these properties with a plan to live here full-time after retirement.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LIFE
Also many of our buyers have raised their kids and now are down-sizing and looking for a lifestyle of boating to restaurants, yacht clubs and out to the islands. SCLM: How did you two discover this area?
Keith and Arlene: We bought a second home in this community 13 years ago. About seven years ago we sold our primary residence in Thousand Oaks and couldn’t get here full-time fast enough. SCLM: Why did you choose the harbor/marina area?
Keith and Arlene: We loved the idea of being on the water, the mild coastal environment and the views. We live, work and play here and we’re five minutes away from everything we do. SCLM: What do homebuyers find most appealing about this region?
Keith and Arlene: Most people are drawn to this community for its affordability, climate and accessibility. The Channel Islands area offers the lowest-priced waterfront homes in Southern California, both for beach and marina properties. While properties in Malibu are about $15-20M dollars per home and in Montecito they’re $40-50M, here they’re $3-5M for a house on the sand. Harbor homes with docks are a third of the price of those in Huntington Beach, Newport and Balboa Island. In addition, this area is one to two-hours from most of Southern California, as opposed to the length of time it takes to get to other beach communities.
SCLM: What types of recreational activities do homeowners enjoy in the Channel Islands?
Keith and Arlene: They enjoy cruising the harbor, fishing, fine dining, spending time in nearby downtown Ventura or simply sitting out on the deck and watching the boats and kayakers. There are recreational boating tours to the islands, skin and scuba diving, paddleboarding and much more. We’re only 35 minutes south of Santa Barbara and there’s much to do there as well. SCLM: In your expert opinion, how’s the real estate market in this area?
Keith and Arlene: The real estate market in general has been on an upswing but Channel Island homes have always been in demand simply because they’re the lowestpriced properties on the water. This is the busiest we’ve ever been in the first quarter of the year. We currently have 14 listings and have sold more than $175 million in real estate since we began. People can own marina properties with boat-docks to keep a 50-foot fishing boat or an electric boat. Condos on the harbor start at $450K, boat dock homes start at $825K, beach properties are from $500k, and oceanfront homes start at $2.5M. The market here is definitely thriving. ❖ Have more questions about buying a second home in the Channel Islands? Contact:

Russian expat and Los Angeles resident Ilia Lerner is the creator of WHITE TIGER VODKA, which takes its name from the endangered Siberian tiger, and his vodka has the distinction of being made in one of Russia’s oldest and largest distilleries. Proceeds from sales also go to the Zoological Society of London and the World Wildlife Fund to help conserve the tiger population, meshing nicely with the California ethos of social responsibility. Four years ago, Lerner didn’t know anything about the liquor business. But today Lerner is not only the proud proprietor of Amur Spirits, but one of his main motivators to succeed in business is to save Amur Tigers - the very inspiration of his line of spirits - from extinction. Los Angeles is also home to the pop music industry, and the 58th annual Grammy Awards was officially sponsored by CÎROC ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA. The company featured several specialty beverages for the occasion, with names like Rising Star and Grammy 58. Taraji P. Henson, who won a best actress award for her portrayal of Cookie on the hit show "Empire," inspired an exclusive CÎROC® Ultra Premium Vodka cocktail recipe in her honor, aptly named "The Empress." In addition to its standard French grape-made vodka, CIROC also carries flavors such as apple, pineapple, coconut and peach. Rapper Sean Combs is even the face of the brand. In the downtown Los Angeles arts district one can find the Young State America distillery, owned by Paul Ryan (no, not that Paul Ryan), which creates the handcrafted LOFT AND BEAR VODKA. Ryan is one of the youngest distillery owners in the country, and five percent of the proceeds go to a charity to help the homeless. Southern Californians are known for being health conscious, and TRU ORGANIC VODKA, made by Greenbar Distillery, is in line with this somewhat true stereotype. The distillery, run by the married couple Melkon Khosrovian and Litty Mathew, carries an extensive line of organic-only spirits and plants a tree for every bottle they sell. Even the labels are 100 percent recycled. Check out their website for an in-depth carbon footprint analysis of their products. If you’re the ethical consumer type, this company is definitely for you.

More centrally located in San Diego is BALLAST POINT BREWING LOFT AND BEAR VODKA & SPIRITS, known for their varied MexicanKILL DEVIL inspired Fugu line SPIRIT CO. of vodkas. MBITIOUS DOESN'T EVEN BEGIN TO ADEQUATELY DESCRIBE WELL-REGARDED CHEF AND FOOD NETWORK STAR, Richard Blais, WHO HAS ALREADY EARNED A SUPERB REPUTATION IN THE CULINARY WORLD. He's a family man, TV reality star, author, entrepreneur, but most of all, a nationally-renowned restaurateur and chef. San Diego foodies in particular are acquainted with his wares and talent, which are hands-on, daily, at two restaurants situated side by side on Kettner Boulevard. They are The Crack Shack, a fantastic spot for the diners who love chicken and eggs, along with Juniper & Ivy, a high-end, classy destination that is already considered one of Southern California's best eateries. Juniper & Ivy, specifically, is a revelation in the fact that each plate is an exquisite celebration of the taste and artistry of food. Though the menu there offers novel choices daily, there are some items that are more recurring than others because they are a sight to behold and a taste to savor. These include the Deviled Eggs, Baja Yellowtail (mini tostadas), Carne Cruda Asada (featuring quail egg with cotija and jalapeño), BBQ Carrots (with peanuts and apricot purée), San Diego Chicken (with amazing brie bread pudding), and the Yodel (a unique spin on devil's cake) for dessert. RICHARD BLAIS
Southern California Life recently had the opportunity to catch up with the exceedingly busy, jet-flying, renaissance chef, Richard Blais. SCL: What is the biggest difference between The Crack
Shack and Juniper & Ivy?
SARA NORRIS
BLAIS: The Crack Shack is of course a bit more casual
Chicken Oysters
and less expensive, but that's the only difference. As far as demographics, we cook for everyone at both places. SCL: Juniper & Ivy has been a big hit with
San Diego residents and critics. Why do you think that is? BLAIS: Tasty food in a welcoming atmosphere at a good price. That's kind of the key for any restaurant. But I think it's an energy thing honestly. The restaurants have a fun, young-at-heart energy. SCL: What are must-try items at Juniper &
Ivy?
Fried Chicken
BLAIS: With many new dishes day to day, it's
like the weather, always moving. With that being said, get a buttermilk biscuit (listed under “snacks on the menu).
SCL: What is the biggest challenge you've
faced artistically and business-wise with regard to Juniper & Ivy? BLAIS: Especially now, it's fighting against your own success. When things are going

SCL: Future expectations for the restaurants? BLAIS: To continue to purchase ingredients and cook them well, and to continue to provide value for our guests. My biggest wish is that our growth enables us to keep our team and family together and that employees become managers and cooks become chefs and that our staff's lives become better. SCL: Paint a “picture” of your day-to-
day responsibilities. BLAIS: Each day is different. I travel a ton, I'm always gaining inspiration, communicating with my team, tasting food, and taking pictures with guests. In general, my biggest role is just being aware of how our amazing team is operating.
LYUDMILA ZOTOVA
SCL: Do you see yourself differently compared to other chefs? BLAIS: I hope people who work with me enjoy it. At the end of the day it's just food, and even though we are incredibly serious about our craft, it's important to me that we aren't so seri-

well, it's easy to get complacent, so we actively try to challenge ourselves to get better in each facet of the dining experience.
ous all the time. That probably makes me a bit different. SCL: How do you balance your time between your personal and professional obligations? BLAIS: I'm on a treadmill in LA right now. I have a 5 a.m. call time for a new TV show tomorrow. I haven't seen my kids in 6 days, and when I get home Friday it will be right to the restaurants, and then back on the road. So, I'm constantly pushing with almost zero downtime, but I love it. I've found the passion in trying to do it all well. The cooking, the mentoring, writing, performing, even a little acting, whatever it is I'm doing on that day, I'm focused on the craft and art of it.
SCL: Although they can be mutually
inclusive, what are you proudest of – being referred to as a chef, restaurateur, author, or TV personality? BLAIS: Good question. My origins are as a chef, a cook, and I'll always be doing that. I still cook every day. It may be at home or in front of a camera, but I'm always around it. For a while it bothered me, the fact that it seems like you have to choose one definition at a time. I've become comfortable with all the descriptors, but I'll always be a chef and a cook. Always. So I guess I'm proudest of being a chef who has become all of those other things the most. SCL: What has the "Top Chef" and "Hungry Games" experience been like for you, and what is the biggest lesson learned from doing the shows? BLAIS: My goal is 100 episodes of television this year and we are more than halfway there and there's still many months to go. So, my answer isn't about one or two shows; it's about performing in front of a camera. The lesson is a simple one of hospitality. That's what chefs do, and what actors, comedians, and writers do. If you make people laugh, or engage, or wonder, and certainly smile, that's the key, and my television work has rounded out my ability to be hospitable. Does that make sense? ❖

N 2013 ACTRESS EMILY WICKERSHAM STEPPED INTO THE 10TH SEASON OF AMERICA’S MOST WATCHED TELEVISION SERIES, “NCIS” JUST AS COTE DE PABLO, WHO PLAYED BELOVED ZIVA DAVID, LEFT THE SHOW.
For some fans, the transition went relatively smooth. Wickersham says for others it was not seamless. “A lot of them were very invested in the Ziva character, so it was a little hump to get over for a little while,” she confesses. It was a hump not just for the fans to accept the new character Ellie Bishop, but the network powers that be needed to have confidence in the actress. Originally, she was only slated for three episodes. Obviously she made the grade due to the chemistry she has with her co-stars, which she must have displayed from the start, during what she calls an unconventional audition. Unlike most auditions in rooms with executives, this one was with the actors on the set. Wickersham had one scene with Mark Harmon, “who plays Gibbs”, and then another with Sean Murray (McGee) and Michael Weatherly (DiNozzo). “It was neat in that way and I know it was to see if they all got along with whoever they hired, but for me it made it so fun,” she says. “And it really has been fun since day one.” Fun, but admittedly overwhelming, to walk H

“The Bronx is Burning” , “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” , “Gossip Girl” and “The Bridge.” During this time, she met her husband, musician Blake Anderson Hanley while dating one of his good friends for a very brief time. Then she kept seeing Hanley around town over a 6-month period and he finally asked her out. “And that was kind of it,” Wickersham says. When they began looking for apartments on Craig’s List to move in together, for fun, they began to look at Los Angeles apartment prices. “The difference in prices were shockingly different. It was so much cheaper out here,” she says. They came out to Los Angeles on a whim, found an apartment within a week and moved to Los Angeles in 2009. They got engaged a year later and married in November, 2010. “Blake has been very supportive,” she says. “He knows this is what I’ve been working towards since he met me. He goes over my lines with me. He has a better memory than I do.” Moving to Los Angeles has given her a life changing experience - getting to go to work every day to do what she loves and even finds therapeutic. “You’re able to learn a lot about yourself through these roles and even in auditions. Interesting things come up,” she says. Ellie Bishop on NCIS, Wickersham says, is very different from her. “I’m not an academic. She eats junk food, I’m really healthy. She’s kind of by the book, I’m a little more loosey-goosey,” Wickersham notes. “But I love how strong she is and how she’s such a hard worker. I love that she totally doesn’t give up. She grew up with three brothers and is a super strong girl who is not afraid of much.” Wickersham admits she, unlike Bishop, is afraid of guns. “Guns really scare me,” she admits. “That’s part of the job, so I went down to Camp Pendleton with our tech advisor, Leon Carroll, and I got to meet some of the real NCIS agents. I learned how to handcuff people and went to the gun range and learned how to shoot a gun. I had never held one in my entire life.” She loves the challenges of the job and the discoveries it brings her and looks forward to her future with the show. Her co-star, Michael Weatherly (Tony DiNozzo) will be departing after this season which she knows will bring changes to the canvas.
“IT’S A HARD JOB, BUT I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I HOPE I’M DOING WORK THAT IS CHALLENGING AND FULFILLING TO ME AND THAT I ENJOY.”
onto a set with a cohesive cast/family that has been essentially together since 2003. “There were a lot of things that made me quite nervous,” she says, admitting one was the show’s large viewership. “It was a little intimidating. But right when I got the job, I got a call from Pauley (Perrette who plays Abby) who is so sweet, to say hi. She gave me the low-down. They have been so great from the get-go and very inclusive and supportive.” NCIS is Wickersham’s first big job. She hadn’t even settled on acting until she dropped out of college feeling directionless and unfocused at her small liberal arts college in Allentown, PA. She moved to New York City where she enrolled in an acting class and public speaking class at the New School. Then one night, while at dinner at a restaurant in Union Square with her family, a woman approached Wickersham and said, “Wow, I love your face. I work with a modeling agency.” Wickersham figured she wasn’t legitimate, but it turned out she was and Wickersham began modeling for the Click Agency. Eventually, she expressed interest in wanting to go out on acting auditions and one of her first jobs was on “The Sopranos.” Actor Vincent Piazza turned her on to acting teacher Alice Spivak with whom she studied for the next three years and Wickersham continued to score small roles on such shows as

“He’ll be missed for sure. It will be a big void,” she admits. “He’s obviously made the decision and I’m excited for what will come for him. As for the show, they will find a way to fill that void, although it will never be the same without Michael Weatherly. It will be different. I think change always brings on fresh, new creative endeavors. It’s not just hard for the fans, it’s hard for us.” As she looks to her future, she hopes it includes more good work like she’s doing now. “It’s a hard job, but I love it so much. I hope I’m doing work that is challenging and fulfilling to me and that I enjoy,” she says. “And I would like to have kids. Family and work. What could be better?” ❖

That same recipe is used today in the chain of Spudnuts shops throughout Southern California and the U.S. Spudnuts are lighter and fluffier than normal raised donuts and come with a variety of toppings. San Clemente Pier
ORANGE COUNTY
Orange County is home to SAN CLEMENTE PIER, where time seems to stand still and ocean waves crash on a pristine beach below. Travelers on the Pacific Coastliner Amtrak train can board and depart at the pier, which feels like a time warp, between the Spanish Colonial design of the homes surrounding it and the 50s style surfer dudes. Pop into the Oyster Bar for a casual bite or catch the last slivers of the sun as it goes down over the water.

Coronado Ferry Landing/Crystal Pier SAN DIEGO
In San Diego, you can make an entire day trip out of visiting the CORONADO FERRY LANDING. Filled with shops, galleries and restaurants, this strip inside the City of Coronado offers a great view of San Diego across the water. On the weekends, there are often live bands and every Tuesday, you can visit the Farmer’s Market. If you’re feeling adventurous or want to do something active, the Ferry Landing also offers bike and kayak tours. You can also visit the pier by way of the Coronado Ferry, which runs hourly. Also in San Diego is CRYSTAL PIER, which features a different kind of pier experience with its Crystal Pier Hotel. Family owned and operated since 1961, the hotel is comprised of 26 cottages that sit above the water and give off a cozy vibe to those passing through Pacific Beach. Open year-round, the Crystal Pier cottages are the quintessential waterfront stay. H

Santa Monica Pier SANTA MONICA
Built in 1909, the SANTA MONICA PIER was the first on the West Coast to be constructed by concrete instead of traditional wood. Now, the pier hosts popular fishing spots and restaurants. But what really makes the SANTA MONICA PIER stand out is PACIFIC PARK, the amusement park that takes up the majority of the pier. With rides like “Inkies Pirate Ship” and the classic Ferris Wheel, the park delights both young and old alike. Aside from the West Coaster high-speed rollercoaster, the Santa Monica Pier also attracts thrill seekers to its trapeze school. Or, if you would rather stay on your feet and learn the history of the pier, you can take a walking tour. The hour-long excursion includes a trip to famed Muscle Beach and secret nooks and crannies of the structure. There’s never a shortage of things to do in Santa Monica and the Pier is home to many of them. In June, hundreds of people climb on stationary spin bikes to raise money for the Harold Robinson Foundation, which raises funds to send inner-city kids to camp. Athletic enthusiasts also can sign up for the TOMMY BAHAMA PADDLE BOARD RACE & OCEAN FESTIVAL, which pays homage to the area’s first paddleboard races in the 1930s, or summertime Roga classes, which combine running and yoga for free every Saturday from September 19 – October 24. Rounding out the best of the summertime events is the Twilight Concert Series, every Thursday night July through September. The free concerts attract thousands of people who set up blankets and picnics on the beach below to listen to and watch that week’s band play on the pier.

Ventura Harbor Fisherman’s Market VENTURA
If it’s fresh seafood you’re after, head a little north to Ventura. Every Saturday, dozens of fishermen bring that morning’s catch to the VENTURA HARBOR FISHERMAN’S MARKET. Visitors line up to pick up the best seafood the area has to offer. Once you stock up on everything from halibut to sea bass, settle in to watch the boats in the harbor or stroll across the promenade to California Street in the heart of downtown Ventura. To get the full pier experience, venture out to the end of the pier and turn around – from there, you’ll take in the marvelous view of the coastline and the Maricopa Mountains in the backdrop.

Stearns Wharf SANTA BARBARA
Further up north in Santa Barbara is STEARNS WHARF. Originally built to handle the passenger and shipping needs of the area, the pier now hosts everything from fortune telling to water taxis and a Museum of Natural History. Visitors can also enjoy wine tasting, dining and shopping along the wharf, which was built in 1872 and has weathered many storms over the years. You wouldn’t know it, though, as the pier is immaculately maintained and always bustling. For a more leisurely experience, hop on board Celebration Cruise’s luxury yacht for a sunset, brunch or dinner cruise. The yacht is a favorite for private events while the Lil Toot Water Taxi is perfect for a waterfront shuttle. TRASH? ✒ BY SCOTT HARRIS
W
HEN I WAS A KID, and my dad would yell at me to “take out the trash!” I knew exactly what to do. I’d stomp my way into the kitchen, letting everyone know how put out I was by this unreasonable intrusion on my valuable time. Then, I would pick up the paper bag full of trash, hoping it didn’t break, and dump it in what used to simply be called a “trash can.” The only deviation from this trash routine, was our fundraising paper drives for Boy Scouts, where everyone in the neighborhood would stack up their newspapers for the week and tie them up with twine (in the days when people still had newspapers delivered to their homes), and instead of taking them to the trash can, we would pick them up and deliver them to our Scoutmaster’s pickup truck. But, as with so many things in life, what used to be simple no longer is. Now, when my wife asks me to “take out the trash,” it triggers an entire process. What does she really mean? A run to Goodwill? Empty printer cartridges, which are always returned? Compost? Coffee grounds, which go directly to the rose bushes? Green trash (usually yard clippings and non-compost food) goes in the green cans. Bottles and cans also have their own special trash bin, and paper (is it coated or uncoated?) has its own can as well. And where does Styrofoam go? I’ve never been sure, so I put it in the recycling and cover it up, hoping for the best. I try my best, I really do, but I’m never confident that all of the “trash” has been distributed to the proper receptacle or destination. My wife, whose passion for saving water has been detailed previously in this column, takes trash distribution very seriously, which means I take trash distribution very seriously. Last week, for the first time, our blue trash can (reserved for actual “trash,”

“ONLY IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CAN WE TURN SOMETHING AS BASIC AND MUNDANE AS TRASH INTO AN ART FORM, EVEN A COMPETITION.” the rare item that cannot in some way, by someone, be recycled for some purpose) was completely empty. My wife showed a joy usually reserved for celebrating children being born and birthdays, as if we’d reached some sort of trash Nirvana. As we took our morning walk around the neighborhood and observed that every other house sported a blue trash can waiting for pickup, I sensed she had succumbed to the sin of pride. Only in Southern California can we turn something as basic and mundane as trash into an art form, even a competition. I was recently visiting a friend on the East Coast — a practical man with simple needs who leads an uncomplicated life. I was in the kitchen, and he asked me if I would take out the trash. It triggered a surprising set of complex emotions. He sounded just like my dad, so I was once again 12 years old and resentful, and of course, I wondered exactly what his trash distribution process was. I recovered and asked where to take it. He looked at me like I was an idiot and said, “the trash can.” I wept. ❖ M AY.JUNE2016

While people around the world may only associate Southern California with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood or the laid back attitude of sunny San Diego, So Cal has so much more to offer. Just outside of its celebrated urban centers, it is a rugged place, a place of extremes, with hot red rock deserts, cold-water pacific islands with wild kelp beds, and snow capped mountain peaks. At least, that’s how I see Southern California. How do you see it? We want to know! We at Southern California Life magazine are devoted to showing you all that it has to offer. We’ll close each issue showcasing the beauty of our region, with its landscapes, and landmarks. And we want you, our readers, to participate.
