Y MOTHER TOOK EVERY OPPORTUNITY POSSIBLE OVER THE YEARS TO REMIND ME THAT I CAUSED HER TROUBLE AT MEALTIMES AS A CHILD. It’s as if she felt I was willfully finicky just to agitate her. I’ve been a picky eater since infancy and throughout elementary school, lunch usually came home untouched. It’s not that I don’t eat, it’s that I have an aversion to about 85% of the food that exists, with meat, bananas, olives and goat cheese topping the extensive list. I prefer basic and uncomplicated choices: Ice-cream, popcorn, jelly beans and other nibbles, that to the horror of an average nutritionist, I consider satisfying meals. To ensure I get the proper amount of nourishment, I’ve learned to combine the correct amino acids to make a complete protein … which then makes dining that much more cumbersome. And as you might imagine, grocery shopping ranks last on my choices of amusing pastimes. It’s a wonder my children made it to adulthood well-fed. My husband, on the other hand, puts his feet on the floor each morning anticipating the meals he will enjoy that day. He rarely leaves food on his plate and the more unusual it is, the better. We’re an odd couple when we’re out to dinner; he can’t decide what to order because everything on the menu looks amazing and I can’t decide because every dish contains one or more ingredients I dislike. He frequently asks the server to choose what he or she considers to be the tastiest entrée in the joint, and he’ll enthusiastically indulge. Consequently, he may feast on three courses while I often settle for a simple salad. Adventuresome to say the least, if it’s edible, Steve will try it. Given all that nonessential info, you may wonder why we are launching our 2016 magazine line-up with a food issue since the editor is not the slightest hint of an epicurean. It’s because whether one is a foodie or fussy, Southern Californians love to eat and we have an extraordinary collection of world-class restaurants available for those who appre-
ciate the very best. As compared to a few other regions around the country, Southland gourmets prefer freshness and quality and are willing to drive across county lines just to dine at a great establishment. Our propensity for natural and organic ingredients has spurred a rise in farmers markets throughout So Cal, and farm to table cuisine is now all the rage. And since we have evolved into a population of consumers with all manner of dietary preferences or restrictions, most chefs will modify their recipes to suit any personal peculiarities (thankfully!!). Although we feature a “Gourmand” section in every issue in which we highlight a particular chef or eatery, we simply could not cover enough of our noteworthy restaurants in just six magazines a year. An edition spotlighting an array of the some of the best food in Southern California is the solution to our dilemma. Since the entire State of California celebrates Restaurant Month in January, our timing couldn’t be better. In the pages to follow you’ll read about seven fine dining options, farmers market locations that feature the freshest fare and some of the most unique and creative cupcake shops in the Southland. And because you’ll likely want to try all the goodies we present, we also feature the secret outdoor stairs throughout our region where you can climb off those extra calories. We uncover Downtown Los Angeles and the changes recently implemented to what was once considered an average business district, but is now one of the trendiest upscale So Cal destinations. Our goal is to help you enjoy Southern California and discover all that this wonderful region has to offer. And if you’re into eating well, what better way to start the new year than munching your way around! Wishing you a fulfilling and healthy 2016!
FAMILY MATTERS… Congratulations to our Style and Beauty editor (and publisher’s daughter), Nicole Schmidt, who was married to Matt Pollastrini this past November 7th, 2015. We wish the newlyweds a life filled with joy and marital bliss.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF VENTURA COUNTY’S “BAGS, BLING & BUBBLY” Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County (BBSVC) celebrated its 2015 Bags, Bling & Bubbly champagne fundraiser on November 9th at the Las Posas Country Club in Camarillo. The hugely successful event was oversold and raised $100,000 for the organization! The afternoon featured a luncheon and program with silent and live auctions as well as boutiques. This year’s “Wise Wonderful Women of the Year,” Terri Polo and Sherri Saum, stars of ABC Family’s hit show “The Fosters,” graciously shared their insights regarding the importance and impact of youth serving organizations. Luncheon guests also had the opportunity to hear from a “Big” and “Little” Sister match, Lauren and Haley, who have been matched in the BBSVC Foster Youth program for two years. Their touching speeches provided a first-hand look into the BIG impact of the program and showed guests the true value of their generous donations. Lynne West, BBSVC CEO, stated, “Our seventh-annual Bags, Bling & Bubbly event was the most successful yet. I am humbled and grateful to everyone who helped with the fundraiser.” All proceeds raised from Bags, Bling & Bubbly will benefit BBSVC’s mentoring programs, creating new matches and professionally supporting Bigs and Littles. i Just a short walk from Palm Canyon Drive with its fine shopping, restaurants and entertainment sits KORAKIA PENSIONE , a beautifully-crafted Mediterranean Moroccan romantic retreat comprised of two villas. The first, a 1924 Moroccan residence, was originally named Dar Marroc by Scottish painter Gordon Coutts who recreated the ambience of his earlier life in Tangier. It became a popular gathering place for musicians, artists and celebrities such as Rudolph Valentino, Errol Flynn and it was rumored that Winston Churchill painted in the Artist Suite, one of the current guest rooms. The neighboring 1930s Mediterranean villa, owned by silent screen star J. Carrol Naish, combined the charm of Southern Europe with the romance of North Africa. It still houses an incomparable romantic master suite with high, wood beam ceilings, indoor/outdoor bath, and massive fireplace. In 1989, Dar Marroc was renamed Korakia (Greek for "crow") and the two villas became a stunning, unique getaway. The bungalows and guest houses have been faithfully restored and furnished with antiques and handmade furniture to create a truly remarkable desert oasis. After breakfast in the courtyard, all of Palm Springs awaits. You can take off for downtown or a game of golf or tennis, relax by the pool or indulge in some yoga or spa treatments. At night, enjoy classic and foreign films, lounge by the heated pools amid flickering lanterns and glowing fire pits while a Moroccan daybed invites you to stargaze. It's easy to see why Forbes Traveler named Korakia one of the “Sexiest Hotels in America.

i Britt
Scripps Inn, one of San Diego's most unique hotels, is a designated city landmark built in 1887. Originally owned by Eugene Britt, followed by Edward Wyllis Scripps, founder of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, the property design included seven gables, large bay windows, a massive hand-carved oak staircase, two-story stained-glass window wall, wraparound front porch and three ornately-designed chimneys. Over the centuries, the building has endured numerous owners and survived many identities ranging from a bed and breakfast to a law firm and chiropractor's office. Following a $6 million renovation by its current owner, the inn has been restored to its original grandeur and once again welcomes discerning visitors. Today, the Queen Anne architecture is richly complemented with period antiques and furnishings. Modern amenities include complimentary WiFi, free parking, laundry service, business services and a spacious patio and garden. The 10 guest rooms are individually decorated and have LCD flat screen televisions, DVD players and climate control. The inn's choice midtown location neighbors numerous Banker's Hill shops and restaurants and is just two-blocks from Balboa Park’s vast offering of cultural and sports attractions including the world-famous zoo, numerous museums, and extensive offering of performing arts and recreation facilities. www.brittscripps-inn.com | 619.230.1991

RANCH HOUSE
CROWN FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY ✒ BY
ERIKA THOMAS
South Side of Camarillo Ranch House
K
NOWN FOR PICTURESQUE SCENERY THAT RANGES FROM AGRICULTURAL-RICH LAND TO SPANISH ARCHITECTURE, CAMARILLO, CALIFORNIA, IS A LIVELY MIX OF MODERN AMENITIES, LUSH, CENTURYOLD VEGETATION AND PLENTY OF EARLY CALIFORNIA CHARM; AND A PRISTINE, 18TH CENTURY RANCH HOUSE IS ITS ANCHOR. Juan Adolfo Camarillo first ventured to California in the early 1800s during the Hijar Padres Expedition. There, he would purchase a 10,000-acre ranch. Camarillo’s land, which would become the site of his home, was one of the last remaining Rancho Calleguas (Mexican land grants) of the era. “The ranch house was the original home of the Camarillo family,” says Development and Public Relations Director for the Camarillo Ranch House, Niki Chopra Richardson. “It was a working ranch, but it was also very much a family home. When Juan Adofo passed away in 1880, his eldest son, 16-year-old
Adolfo, took over the ranch.” Camarillo would not only run the day-to-day operations of his father’s ranch, he would take it from having only cattle and mules, to a booming agricultural business, including barley, corn, alfalfa and lima beans, as well as Citrus and Eucalyptus trees. Camarillo would also breed one-of-a-kind horses there. “The Camarillo White Horse was his very own innovation. Today they can be seen prancing in Santa Barbara’s Fiesta Parade and of course, in the Rose Parade every year,” she says. Adolfo married Isabel Menchaca in 1888. The couple (who would have seven children together) moved into a small adobe on the property. When it was destroyed by a fire, Camarillo set about building a brand-new house. “Camarillo was a true patriarch. One of the things he stood the most for was family and so he wanted his home to reflect that,” Chopra Richardson says. Built in 1892, the residence was a grand, three-story Queen Anne Victorian-style with 14 rooms, a sprawling porch and some of the most unique vegetation available. “Many of the trees on the property are over 100 H

years old; and one tree that sits on the property — called the Morton Bay Fig — is the second largest tree in the state of California,” says Chopra Richardson. Though Camarillo and his family resided there for nearly seven decades (Camarillo passed away in
1958) the house fell into major disrepair during the 1990s. There was talk of having it razed, but the community was against it. Eventually it was purchased by the city, Camarillo Ranch House Foundation was launched, and within a short time a 1.5 million dollar renovation on the property was underway. Today the home, restored to its pristine Victorian-era charm, is bustling with visitors from locals to tourists. It serves as a historical museum, an educational center and community hub, hosting more than 150 events each year. “It is a very popular spot for weddings and other events. It’s managed by a small staff and we rely very heavily upon volunteers who donate hours of their time to help further the beauty and

Chopra Richardson also adds that the upkeep of the home is something that’s ongoing. “Even the most minor of repairs are done with the keeping and integrity of the Victorian era, which means we can’t just run over to the Home Depot if we need something,” she laughs. When asked what connects people to the Camarillo Ranch House after so many

F THERE IS ONE MAXIM ABOUT LIVE MUSIC, IT'S THE FOLLOWING: THE PERCEPTION OF THE MUSIC IS HIGHLY INFLUENCED BY WHERE IT IS PERFORMED. The setting could be indoors or in the open air, but nevertheless, it has to be favorable to the spread of sound waves and the performers' presence on stage. With sound having gone digital and musicians becoming celebrity image touchstones in the media, it has been imperative for venues to satisfy the contemporary criteria for the concert “feel.” After all, the drab and musty spaces for hosting concerts are not only inappropriate, but outdated. Only the state-of-the-art venues, powered by an exponentially expanding technological industry can accentuate the musician and his/her music. Southern California is home to a plethora of concert halls and spaces, but only a select number — seven in total — can house more than 2,000 people, provide superb acoustic sound, offer the right lighting, and have a venerable history. Certainly, when artists and musicians get to a certain level in their careers, they want the opportunity to add their piece of history to the venues that have entertained millions over the years. And, in turn, when the interplay between concert attendees and their musical heroes reaches a fever pitch, history is made at the very places that are becoming of the occasion. H

Built in 1999, STAPLES CENTER was intended to become the new hub of Downtown Los Angeles and the new home of the Lakers, Clippers, and Kings. The facility has fulfilled those expectations and much more, and has become one of the most prestigious places to perform in the world. It has been the home of the Grammy Awards since 2004 and, just last year, Taylor Swift set a record with the most sellouts for an artist in Staples Center history! Most recently, Muse had two highly successful outings on December 18th and 19th. In April and July, Ellie Goulding and Selena Gomez hope to do the same. Simply put, the Staples Center — with a seating capacity of 18,118 and top-of-the-line sound system — is the hot spot for concerts. i
THE FORUM www.fabulousforum.com With a seating capacity of 17,505, THE FORUM in Inglewood had long been associated with the Lakers until the team moved to Staples Center at the turn of the century. The Forum was left to wilt and there was even talk of demolishing the 1966-established structure. However, since it has been renovated in 2013 for a cost of $76.5 million, much of which went towards sound amplification, huge names like Prince and Madonna have performed here. And in 2014, the venue hosted the MTV Video Music Awards. Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden are set to galvanize their passionate legions at The Forum in February and April.

Besides better dressing rooms, food-vendor upgrades, and a massive stage improvement, the SANTA BARBARA BOWL has a delightful, out-in-the-open forest ambiance. www.laphil.com i Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, this L.A. PHIL-PARTNERED concert hall is a revelation from both the outside and inside. The avant-garde metallic masterpiece bowls over the eyes and, inside the main auditorium, the ears experience aural ecstasy, underscored by the fact that every panel has been oriented to optimally reverberate sound. This was best emphasized during Kristin Chenoweth's sold-out concert on November 5th, when every note from the classicallytrained singer's mouth — in conjunction with the band and the choir backup singers for her final two songs — rang dulcetly. To put it another way, the waves of precise, Heaven-sent sound activated never-before-used ear receptors. Such bliss is a recurring phenomenon for virtually any concert held here.

often attracted to each other, however, it is important that each person be respected as a unique and independent individual. What matters most is how you treat your partner, regardless of how either of you may feel at a particular moment. In fact, it is often the individual differences that provide the most interest and fun in a relationship.
If you think that your partner should be able to read your mind about your wishes, needs and wants, understand that this is rarely possible. Trying to do it is hard and is NOT an expression of, or proof of, whether or not someone loves you. Clear communication is vital to establishing trust and safety within a relationship and speaking up is vital. It is important that your words and actions match in order to convey your meaning loud and clear. Lack of open, honest communication can cause stress and distrust.
FAIR FIGHTING 4 People are imperfect individuals and life can be complicated, as disagreements and problems will arise. It’s not what happens in life that matters so much. Rather, it’s how we handle things and what they mean to us that count. When difficulties and conflicts occur, address them truthfully, and do it sooner rather than later. Communicate clearly and respectfully in order to identify and resolve the right problem and work towards a mutually beneficial outcome.
YOUR 5 PRIORITIZE RELATIONSHIP
Be intentional about treasuring your partner by keeping the lines of communication open and clean. Be sure to show your feelings of affection and regard because actions matter and help to keep romance alive.
6 ENDURING RELATIONSHIPS
Shed your unrealistic and idealized notions of a perfect relationship -of having a soul mate meet your every need. Genuine connection and partnership thrives when each individual contributes to creating a meaningful, secure and joyful relationship. Because so much of communication is non-verbal, actions and romance are tangible ways of letting your partner know the depth and breadth of your feelings, affection and respect. ❖

he is able to crisscross successfully from film to television, playing such outstanding roles as the historical Civil Rights pioneer Amelia Boynton in “Selma,” to the manipulative, maniacal Vee in “Orange is the New Black,” to her current part on Fox TV’s “Rosewood” of the nurturing mother Donna Rosewood. Stifled by the “children are seen and not heard” philosophy of Trinidad where she grew up an only child the first 10 years of her life, Toussaint created a world inside her head as means of escape. She says acting chose her.

“I was this little artist in this body in a system that didn’t have a clue what to do with little artists,” Toussaint says. “On some level, we were being treated like small animals, earning the rights to be a human. A couple of things can happen to an artist in that environment. I went into hiding; I went underground. I created an entire world inside my head where no one could touch me.” When she and her mother came to America, Toussaint knew it was the new beginning of her freedom. “I remember saying to myself, ‘What do you want

Then it said, ‘Acting,’ and I said, ‘Yes, that sounds good.’ I called the biggest ad on the page and made an appointment for that school.” She told her mother she was going to be an actor. It was no surprise that she was noticed immediately: Toussaint graduated from Julliard in the morning and reported to rehearsal at the Public Theatre at 1:00 that afternoon to play Lady Macbeth. Reflecting on her role in “Selma” Toussaint says a highlight was meeting Amelia Boynton. “I live a life of an actor. I’m not in a coal mine. I’m

While both Vee on “Orange is the New Black” and her current role on “Rosewood” are mothers, they definitely tapped into different areas of her being.
“Vee was an interesting spiritual exercise in exploring the shadow self,” is how Toussaint put it. “We spend most of ourselves pretending we are good people, but being good does not mean to the exclusion of aspects that can do great violence given the circumstance.” Toussaint believes she has earned points in the Karmic bank by getting to play Donna Rosewood whom is much like the mother she is in real life to her 11-yearold daughter Samara who she raises on her own. “I’m a momma bear,” Toussaint says. “The kind of love a mother has, you can’t explain it to people. There
is no frame of reference for this kind of love. It defies anything that has come before. You can’t glimpse it and no one can access it except a child. The child holds the key and unless the child opens the door, you don’t even know that room exists. It’s everything.” On “Rosewood,” she says she gets to gets to play in the center of her heart. “It’s the most vulnerable and the most terrified,” Toussaint says. “There’s that wonderful saying that to have a child is a choice to forever watch your heart go walking outside your body. To get to do that in my work ... it’s a good life.” ❖

N UNWISE MAN ONCE SAID, “FOOD IS WHAT IT IS. IN TIME, YOU WON'T REMEMBER WHAT YOU'VE EATEN AS MUCH AS THE PLACES YOU'VE SEEN AND THE ACTIVITIES YOU TOOK PART IN.” What this grossly fails to take into account, however, is that the sense of taste is just as, if not more important, than the senses of sight, hearing, touch, and smell. In addition, who's to say that taste can't be combined with one or more of the other four senses to create a long-lasting memory? But more so than that, how about a memory that is exuberantly reflected upon over and over again? The Barton G. Restaurant on La Cienega Blvd. in Los Angeles, conceived and created by the man of the same name (Barton G. Weiss), does not only that, but is the absolute epitome of fine-dining. Not even hyperbole of the grandest sort does the culinary experience offered by this restaurant sufficient justice. The credit goes to its overseer, Mr. Weiss, who has fashioned an impressive reputation as an entrepreneur, restaurateur, and artist. Since opening a restaurant in Miami Beach in 2002, he brought his wares to the region in June 2014, giving rise to the Barton G. brand for Angelenos to experience. And it is immediately perceived the moment the glass double-door of the restaurant is opened. The lovely and intimate atmosphere washes over, from the dimmed lights to the felt and orchid-designed walls. There is even felt under each table to absorb exterior sound so that patrons can have uninterrupted conversations. That's just the start of Weiss' vision for each guest of the restaurant, wonderfully manifest for all to feel. The utmost professionals, including both the knowledgeable and attendant staff who wear lavish leather aprons, and team leaders like Executive Chef Attila Bollok and General Manager Horst Ringler, carry out the rest of what he has designed. For Weiss, finding these people required due diligence. “It took me months searching the country to find the right people that 'just get it' in terms of our food and style. H

mouse trap, or with a wooden platform supporting a gigantic fork and knife, respectively. Then, beyond the fantastically charming exteriors, lie the most gratifying tastes. The Boneless Ribeye Steak, for example, is ethereally delicate and flavorful. The most artistic and awe-inspiring food presentations, however, emanate from the dessert menu, which comes to life in the upstairs pastry kitchen. For example, the “Chocolate Treasure” option (double chocolate brownie, Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream, chocolate ganache, gold-dusted chocolate spoons) arrives in a treasure box with chocolate gold coins and a metallic shovel fixed to a powdered graham cracker sand bottom. The most Instagram'd dessert, though, is the “Marie Antoinette Head – Let Them Eat Cake,” which is presented with an aristocratic mannequin head, cotton candy for the hair, as well as raspberry & strawberry cream cheese cake. Consequently, it is but another reminder that the sated stomachs and smiling eyes, from first course to last, are attributable to the creative grandiosity and inner-workings of the mind of the man who founded it all.

“Creativity to me is about inspiration. I can get inspired going to a hardware or electrical supply store. I walk in with no ideas and walk out with a plan! I start conceptualizing food on these unusual items and after the creative process is finalized, these dishes end up on the menu,” states Weiss. Undoubtedly, it is Weiss' unerring imagination and ambition, including his drive for something continually greater, that have gifted the senses of everyone who has ever step foot into his restaurant. “I want to be known for being someone that went beyond what was expected, whether that be in creating and designing events, food, or experiences. If something was done before, I want to do it completely differently. Expect the unexpected,” Weiss reflects. His inexhaustible drive has made him the vanguard of how restaurants should all ideally be experienced. But, at the moment, there is only one and it stands tall and undisputed. And it is thanks to Weiss, the revered “Willy Wonka of the industry” — a truly apt description by his friend Samantha Wan. ❖

N The dining experience at SAN DIEGO’S COASTERRA promises to be one of flavor and ambiance, says partner/chef Deborah Scott. The combination of flavors paired throughout their dishes and the amazing view creates a complete package, Scott says. “A composition, if you will,” she says. “We sit out over the water on the bay. The view is all the way from the airport to the skyline of San Diego to Coronado, to Mexico to Point Loma.” The eclectic menu features a Cedar River natural short rib which is made into an enchilada. “Normally if someone was making an enchilada, you can talk about the taco shops where the meat might come out of a can and then you can talk about a Cedar River allnatural short rib enchilada,” Scott says. “Our tamarindo scallop is made with dry pack U-10 scallops, which are the best you can get. They come with a creamy corn polenta, warm kale and bacon salad,” she says. One of the signature dishes is the mar y tierra -- the Cedar River short rib with Oaxacan mole, lobster-risotto cake, grilled asparagus and lobster claw. Another she mentions is the corte en fuego -- a blackened 14 oz natural New York strip, Mexican corn and baby kale salad and ranchero pinto beans with chorizo. “One of my favorite dishes on the menu is our chicken enchiladas,” Scott says. “They have an amazing ranchero chicken sauce, a tomatillo-serrano salsa, a pasilla salsa and a pasilla chile adobo with Chihauhua cheese, Mexican rice and black beans. I love that dish. It’s more of a simple chicken enchilada, but yet not.” She says a good choice for a vegetarian is the enchiladas de huerta and tamale champinon: “A roasted corn chimichurri, lots of vegetables -- red onions, bell peppers -with a pasilla chile adobo and a crimini mushroom tamale with goat cheese and smoked poblano cream with pomegranate seeds.” Lunch prices range from $17-24 for entrees with the exception of the filete de campo which is $36. “That’s my favorite filet ever,” she says. “It’s ancho-brown sugar bacon wrapped 8oz center cut filet mignon, creamed corn, chorizo spiked potatoes, tomato jam and crispy leaks -- food porn.” The dinner prices for entrees range from $19-$42. • Bar

N When was the last time you heard someone at a restaurant invite you to stay at their establishment all night? Well, at E.P. & L.P., Chef Louis Tikaram has done just that. Their two restaurants in one concept was designed to be an allnight dining experience with the E.P. modern Asian cuisine downstairs and the cocktails and more, as he describes, “Southeast Asian street food,” on the L.P. rooftop. Tikaram wants the environment to be fun. “There is really great southeast Asian food in L.A., but it’s always in a more mom and pop style setting,” he says. “We’re bringing in a little more sophistication.” And funkiness, he says. Tikaram blends his artful cuisine with the music he loves: West Coast-influenced hip hop and 90’s music “where you can have a groove on while you’re eating dinner.” Among the specialties you might be grooving on are the massaman curry. “It’s a really spiced curry,” he says. “Really warming and soothing. All its ingredients are roasted like lemongrass, onion and garlic, glanagal and red chilis and then a really nice, slow graze of venison osso buco shank, which is a nice gamey meat for winter as well.”
For vegans, he offers a similar curry called the roasted vegetable curry. “It’s a yellow curry of cauliflower and Romanesco with pickled salsify which is really nice,” Tikaram says. He uses a wood grill for a lot of his cooking, which he says imparts a great flavor and is healthy. One of those dishes is an Aspen Ridge rib eye steak with a spicy chili dipping sauce. Another is an octopus with fuyu persimmon, blackbean and red chard salad. Tikaram says the prices range from his small bites -oysters, abalone and clams in the half shell from $4 - $15 to his dinners which are $16 - $34. And if you choose to have a full dinner at E.P., you can still enjoy the rooftop L.P. for dessert afterwards and stay all night munching soy caramel popcorn for $6. On the rooftop, Tikaram is talking about the style you’d find on the streets of Thailand or Vietnam, like woodgrilled skewers and his style of tofu fries. “We’re trying to bring something new and different to L.A.,” Tikaram says. “I’m creating a fun dining experience where people can come for a drink or come for dinner and stay for the night.”

Brian’s 24
N Andrea Epstein, general manager of BRIAN’S 24, the only 24-hour eatery in all of downtown San Diego, says their patrons really appreciate the varied menu of more than 200 items. Many of their customers come in for breakfast, which is available “24/7,” Epstein says. “Our buttermilk pancakes are made with fresh eggs, vanilla and buttermilk and they’re very popular,” Epstein says. “People come in for our waffles and our benedicts.” And maybe a little history. Brian’s 24 is off the lobby of the historic St. James Hotel. The hand-crafted bar (yes, they have a full bar) was obtained from actress Joan Crawford’s estate. That, along with the crystal chandelier and tin ceiling, gives diners a warm yet elegant feeling, all while access to a huge selection of comfort food. They have several different benedicts including a corned beef hash benedict, a country benedict with sausage and gravy and the customers’ favorite, according to Epstein, the crab cake benedict which she describes as, “Your typical benedict with a split english muffin and a crab cake on each half and a poached egg and hollandaise sauce.” She says they sell more than 1,200 of their chicken and waffles every month, which features a full half fried chicken -- a breast, wing, leg and thigh, along with the waffles. On their full burger list (which you can substitute with a gardenburger, salmon burger or chicken breast at no additional cost), one sticks out: The peanut butter burger. It’s a 1/2 lb. patty, yes, topped with peanut butter and bacon and American cheese. For dinner, she says some of their favorite items are the home-cooked meatloaf and the fried chicken. “We have Mediterranean chicken, salads and a huge menu. It’s a diner style menu, so we have pretty much anything you can think of from omelets to benedicts, pancakes and waffles, burgers and sandwiches, entrees and desserts and pizza. We have wonderful cooks in our restaurant.” Epstein says the eatery is one of the few family-owned and operated restaurants in all of downtown San Diego. And, she adds, the prices are very affordable. Meals run from $12 - $17.

N Jon Sloan, chef at the CRACK SHACK says their patrons will find a “high level approach to a fast, casual restaurant.” Customers especially love their fried chicken dish, which comes in a 10-piece or 5-piece option. “The 10-piece is a whole 3-lb. organic bird; two breasts cut in half, two wings, two thighs and two drumsticks,” Sloan says. Don’t be embarrassed if you don’t want SAN DIEGO to share. Sloan says he’s seen many patrons put down the 10-piece themselves. Sloan says their chicken is extra special because it is made with Jidori chicken. “Jidori is the only chicken producer in Los Angeles who bring in and butcher the chickens themselves,” explains Sloan. “He brings chickens to his warehouse and we receive them within 24 hours. It’s about as fresh as it can get. There’s a complete difference when you eat it.” He says customers can’t expect to pay KFC or Popeye prices. Jidori is quality. The 10-piece goes for $28 and the 5-piece is $15. Besides their fried chicken, the Crack Shack’s unique tiny chicken oysters are a favorite. Sloan says the nuggets that come from the back part of the chicken are not portions chefs usually serve to their guests, but at the Crack Shack, they treat them like New England style clams and 2266 Kettner Blvd. their customers clamor for San Diego, CA 92101 them. “We marinate the oysters in pickle brine and the salt in the acid in the brine breaks down the oysters and makes them more tender,” he explains. “They also absorb the flavors of pickles. Then we marinate them in buttermilk and we dredge it in Japanese flour called Karaage. They get fried off and they’re tossed with some crispy kale and parsley and served with a pickled mustard seed caviar tarter sauce. They’re little round nuggets of deliciousness.” As soon as you walk up to the Shack, you receive a six-pack of sauces for your culinary delight. Sides are extra. Sloan recommends their distinctive slaws, the mini biscuit basket with special maple miso butter, as well as the fries cooked in chicken fat, a pound of which is $5. Sloan says they’ve taken their fine dining chef team from Juniper & Ivy who are now approaching casual food, using their same passion. “The whole aesthetic is completely inviting to all walks of life,” Sloan says.

Elegant, quiet, intimate and comfortable, with booths and alcoves, Selvaggio says it will be a relief in the world of “crazy new wave of super noisy restaurants.” At the old school restaurant where Selvaggio says hospitality is king, one of his specialties is risotto. leaves,” Selvaggio says. “Then you finish it with amarone, which is a very robust, red wine. This dish must be done with perfection because it must have the right consistency. The secret to risotto is when you pull it with the fork, it has to stick completely.” Another a typical Roman dish Selvaggio makes is roasted porchetta. “We have a whole porchetta which is usually 12-15 lbs. and we stuff it with raisin, crumbs, all kind of spices, pine nuts and pistachio,” he says. “Then we tie and slow roast it for four hours. When we serve it, we serve a nice slice of roasted porchetta.” Selvaggio mentions the crudo di pesce from their antipasto section, which he describes as a Italian suchi. “We marinade tuna, hamachi and scallops in a brine that is called colatura and some citrus fruit,” he says. “It’s a beautiful dish.” At Valentino, guests can also enjoy a light bite at the Vin Bar. “They can have about anything they want, a nice little Tuscan salad called panzanella salad or a skewer of little bocconcini which are buffalo mozzarella with tomatoes and basil or the pasta of the day.” And then there is the legendary wine cellar. Selvaggio says for more than 30 years they have received awards as one of the few restaurants that has one of the largest wine selections in the country. “We used to have as many as 120,000 bottles of wine,” Selvaggio says. “Of course now we have less, but we still have lots and lots of wine.” The price range will depend on how many courses guests enjoy. Two courses and a dessert will cost around $65. A main course averages between $32 and $38.

The elegant, yet casual feeling in the historic landmark -- a house built in 1927 which Paul Bruggemans bought and restored -- sets the mood for the French Mediterranean cuisine that has become well-loved. Bruggemans says guests particularly enjoy the romantic patio which is cooled during the summer and warmed during the winter. Diners never get tired of the menu. Chef Jean Paul Lair adds new dishes on a weekly basis to please his guests, but there are always signature dishes like his lobster prepared with vanilla butter over corn blinis and a little spinach. The sauce, he says is a corn vanilla bisque. “We also serve a venison thermidor served with a duo of celery and celery root puree and that comes with a red currant cabernet sauce.” Lair says. The restaurant offers prix fixe menus for both lunch and dinners with course options and fixed prices. “We appeal to a nice mix of ages,” Bruggemans says. “It’s very homey,” Lair says. “People find what they’re looking for at this restaurant -- the atmosphere, the selection of food and not forgetting the wine list, which is one of the best you can find around.” ❖

Local Sites for “Farm-to-Table” Fare Stepping foot in a grocery store these days means having more choices than just paper or plastic. In an age of glutenfree, dairy-free, fat-free, and non-GMO options, simply buying a meal can seem overwhelming. But before shelves were stocked with stickers and labels, there was a simple thing called your neighborhood farmers’ market, where you could count on finding fresh, local goods grown with heart and nurtured with soul. Luckily, these markets still exist in virtually every neighborhood across Southern California. And if you’re looking for the one near you, we’ve got you covered!

Tucked into San Diego’s vibrant Italian district, just minutes from bustling Downtown, is the Little Italy Mercato. Founded in 2008 by Catt White, this market started on a modest block and a half with 40 farmers and vendors. Now, the market boasts 200 tents on five large blocks. “I saw a need,” said White. “I lived in Little Italy and could do anything I wanted but shop for fresh groceries.” White had spent a lot of time around small markets in Europe and as the publisher of a small trade magazine for independent restaurants, was immersed in food politics “Our goal is to make it so people can do their weekly grocery shopping and not have to go anywhere else,” she says. And she’s accomplished that. Every Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., the Mercato averages 15,000-18,000 visitors. San Diego locals, chefs and restaurant owners, along with tourists docking from one of the nearby cruise ships, can find everything from summer squash to sea urchins, which are caught by local divers each week.

White is proud to host multi-generational farmers as well as those new to the trade, both of whom help maintain the integrity of the market. “It completely changes the economy of farming,” she explains. “Farmers can keep the entire margin by selling directly to the consumer. Despite high land prices, we keep getting new farmers.” “We wouldn’t be able to sustain our business without a local market,” comments one Mercato tenant. “It helps us thrive.” Along with commerce, the market brings new tastes and tunes to the city, with live music at three different locations. “We just try to bring farmers to the city and people to the table,” White says. “It makes Little Italy even more wonderful.” Up the coast in Orange County, people flock to Anaheim for two things – the Angels and the Downtown Certified Farmers’ Market & Craft Fair. In addition to certified produce and homegrown music, the market offers locally made foods and crafts, mentions Devon Reeves, the Community Relations Manager for the Downtown Anaheim Association. “What makes us unique is that we also accept EBT and Farmers’ Market Nutrition Vouchers” Reeves adds. Not only does the Association want to support farmers, but it also encourages all citizens to buy local and eat fresh. “It’s important to connect to the community,” Reeves says. “The produce offered at certified farmers’ markets tends to be more flavorful, as it is picked at peak ripeness.” Roughly 30-50 vendors set up each week, depending on the season. The Downtown Market was launched in 1995 and is located directly in the heart of Downtown at the Center Street Plaza. Founded on the A,B,C,D’s – Agriculture, Business, Crafts and Dining – the market is open every Thursday from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Foodies and freshness fiends alike delight in the colors, tastes and sights at the Downtown Santa Monica Farmers’ Market, which is open every Wednesday and Saturday yearround, rain or shine. It’s difficult to believe that that the everbusy Third Street Promenade was, at one point, in need of some serious foot traffic. But that is the very reason thenMayor Ruth Yannatta Goldway founded the market, which dates back to 1981, right after farmers’ markets were author-

of the drought, we’re just trying to help farmers continue to farm,” she says. “We owe our survival to the farmers’ market,” says Alex Weiser of Weiser Family Farms. Weiser’s family has been part of the market since it’s founding and has enjoyed watching the industry prosper under it’s influence. “Instead of the old system where that was a disconnect, the connection from farmer to customer is filled with a lot of love and trust,” Weiser says. “It’s fulfilling for everybody involved.” Between munching on samples of the freshest fruits and vegetables, guests can take a break to sip on local coffee and enjoy ocean views. The market is also piloting an educational program for children that will include storytelling, arts-andcrafts, cooking demonstrations and face painting. Programs like this are making their way into more and more farmers’ markets, transforming the experience from finding wellpriced, high quality produce into a day’s affair for the whole family. ❖

OST TOURISTS HEAD TO CITIES TO ENJOY THEIR FINE HOTELS, RESTAURANTS, SHOPPING, AND ACTIVITIES. NOT SO WITH DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES ... UNTIL RECENTLY. IT WAS A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE WORKED AND LEFT IT PRETTY MUCH SHUTTERED AT 5 PM. HAPPY HOURS, MOVIE NIGHTS AND HOME WERE IN THE VALLEYS, INLAND EMPIRE, WESTSIDE AND COASTAL CITIES. AND THEN THE RENAISSANCE BEGAN. Los Angeles was founded in September 1781 when 44 settlers established El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles — The Town of the Queen of Angels — which a century later, had grown into the largest town in California. With the arrival of the railroads and land boom of the 1880s, the population of 11,000 exploded to 97,000. Los Angeles was here to stay. Growth of Downtown continued until 1957 when the building boom moved to outlying areas creating masses of shopping malls, business centers, entertainment complexes, and residential neighborhoods. The city went into decline, and it wasn't until the 1990s that the renaissance began. A vibrant new energy in economic and social environments created by millennials and other professionals began building a new social and economic dynamic in the heart of the city. With the resurgence came an influx of new businesses, shopping, entertainment, and major-name restaurants as new high-rise condos, apartment buildings, and hotels continually redefined the skyline.

Today, Downtown celebrates the old and embraces the new. Olvera Street, with its colorful market, historic buildings and celebrations including the Blessing of the Animals and Cinco de Mayo attracts some two million visitors annually. Chinatown, background for many movies and TV programs, is undergoing a revival. The Chinese bakeries and traditional restaurants that remained during the exodus to the San Gabriel Valley decades ago are now being rejoined by a wide variety of new stores, businesses and dining spots. Little Tokyo is also enjoying the return of excellent authentic Japanese restaurants and other renewed activity. Once an area of abandoned industrial buildings, the Arts District, in which the renaissance began, remains a flourishing hub for L.A.'s creative professionals. It was in the mid'70s when a small group of artists and other creative innovators saw an opportunity in converting empty industrial and commercial structures into low-rent studios and living space. Actors Forrest Whittaker, Tim Robbins, and actress/director Jenna Fischer are a few of the personalities whose talents were nourished here. Today, the Arts District continues to be a vibrant,

creative community of artists, art enterprises and entertainment projects.
WHAT'S TRENDING Restaurants, which once relied upon business lunch traffic, have multiplied into dozens of excellent international dining establishments including some of the country's biggest names. Bestia, an Italian restaurant in the Arts District, requires reservations weeks in advance. However, you can walk into the bar, which is also a happening place. BS Taqueria on West 7th and Broken Spanish on South Flower, both owned by renowned chef Ray Garcia, made Esquire Magazine's "Best New Restaurants 2015" list and Garcia was named Chef of the Year. COURTESY DEL MAR RACE TRACK

“DURING THE OFF SEASON, VARIOUS FILM AND SCRIPTED TELEVISION SHOWS, SUCH AS HBO’S “ENTOURAGE,” HAVE SHOT SEGMENTS AT DEL MAR.”
he lyrics BING CROSBY penned and sang in his golden baritone voice for his beloved racetrack cue the start and end of each racing day in the seaside track at Del Mar. And fittingly so: It was Crosby himself who opened the Del Mar racetrack in 1937, having partially financed the WPA-built project during the Depression. As a show business personality, Crosby’s stardom in his day is hard to overstate. Not only did he have 42 number-one records, but he was the leading movie star in the 1940s and also had the top-rated radio show. His celebrity brought other luminaries to the track, and soon stars such as Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Betty Grable, Jimmy Durante, and even J. Edgar Hoover were regular faces. Crosby even raced a horse he owned against the famous Seabiscuit in a match race that was broadcast from his radio show, which had the desired affect of catapulting Del Mar to fame. “Other than some folks in Southern California and real racing aficionados, nobody knew Del Mar existed,” said Mac McBride, Director of Media and in-house historian for the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, which owns the track. “After that match race and after that radio show, everybody in the country knew Del Mar existed. They said it was the race that put Del Mar on the map, and it really was so.” Another example of Crosby’s entrepreneurial streak: his was the first racetrack to use a camera to determine a race’s winner instead of a panel of three judges. Today, Del Mar is known as one of a few preeminent tracks. Still, given its rich history, there is the occasional nod to yesteryear. For instance, 2015 saw the 20th anniversary of what was originally known as the One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest. H

“We want[ed] something a little special to jazz up opening day. Why don’t we have a hats contest? Everybody used to wear hats to the races,” recalled McBride. “So we did. And the first time we had one, whoa, here they came.” Today, the contest has hundreds of participants, some of whom spend thousands of dollars on a hat. The track still entices stars … today, that often means reality
stars. Caitlyn Jenner was there this past Opening Day along with the film crew from her program “I am Cait,” and the shows “The Bachelor” and Lifetime’s “Little Women” have also filmed during racing season. During the off season, various film and scripted television shows, such as HBO’s “Entourage,” have shot segments at Del Mar. Members of the San Diego Chargers can often be seen at races, along with Padres and professional baseball players in town to play the Padres during the summer months. It also doesn’t hurt that the club’s president, Joe Harper, is the grandson of Cecil B. DeMille. And Del Mar is looking to attract a diverse and youthful fan base for the sport of thoroughbred racing, often through hosting events in conjunction with races such as food truck days, craft beer festivals, reggae concerts and singles clubs, which it is able to do because it is conveniently located on state fairgrounds. As a result, Del Mar attracts a crowd that is diverse in age and almost evenly split between men and women, while racing crowds generally tend to skew older and overwhelmingly male. “What we’re doing is creating racing fans,” said McBride. “We’re getting people here, and if we can get people here we think we can make them fans.” One imagines that Mr. Bing Crosby, whose voice still bookends every racing day at Del Mar, would approve. ❖ For more information, visit www.dmtc.com

The Southland And Its Celebrity Spectacle ✒ BY
SCOTT HARRIS
I
N SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS, WHILE NOT AN EVERYDAY OCCURRENCE FOR MOST OF US, ARE NOT UNCOMMON. FOR TRUE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIANS, HOW WE SHARE OUR MOST RECENT SIGHTING IS ALMOST AS IMPORTANT AS THE SIGHTING ITSELF. A SORT OF “CASUAL INDIFFERENCE” IS THE PREFERRED, AND EXPECTED APPROACH. THIS HAS EVOLVED INTO THE CREATION OF A “CODE,” A PRESCRIBED WAY IN WHICH WE SHARE THE EVENT WITH OUR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND COWORKERS. First, you can only use the first name of the celebrity. If it takes two names, they just aren’t that big. Second, you never lead a conversation with the actual sighting. Leave the breathless, “Do you know who I just saw?!” approach to visiting family and friends. Third, never, ever expose your full level of excitement. You will hear people say, “I was at a Lakers game last week and Jack (Nicholson) spilled his popcorn.” The use of the first name and a specific detail implies a level of intimacy that probably didn’t exist in a building with more than 17,000 people. Or, “I was in a little café in Malibu over the weekend and Dustin (Hoffman) walked in,” again implying a level of intimacy that Mr. Hoffman probably wouldn’t agree with if he were telling the story.

Occasionally, one of these chance meetings does lead to a quick exchange such as “Clayton (Kershaw), great game last night,” or, “Luke (Bryan), love the new album.” In a case like that, it is important to open the story with “I was talking with Brad (Pitt) the other day…” again giving the listener the option to believe that you had a lengthy one-on-one chat with a highly visible star. As Southern Californians, we are almost invariably asked about celebrities when we’re traveling. Who do you know, who have you seen or does so-and-so really … ? This is a

great opportunity to clarify that you rarely, if ever, see any celebrities, much less have meaningful conversations or an actual relationship with them. However, for most, the temptation is too large and we rack our brains for any actual sightings or snippets of conversation. Often, we condense a lifetime
of brushes with celebrities and, without actually “lying,” allow the listener to believe they have all occurred recently. And sometimes, almost unavoidably, you simply wind up lying. My wife and I were recently in a remote area of Roatan, Honduras, and took a long boat ride in a small skiff with two young local boys. Because we were from Southern California, they assumed, despite our protests, that we knew a large number of celebrities. They were particularly focused on Miley (Cyrus), and our repeated efforts to convince them that we didn’t know her, had never met her or even listened to one of her albums were met with disbelief. Finally, thinking, “What can it really hurt?” I made up a few stories about spending time with Miley: How sweet she was, how she valued her privacy and how, should they ever make their way to Southern California, I would be happy to introduce them to her. It made their day, maybe their month or even their year. Of course, I have no idea what I’d do should they ever actually make their way to Southern California. In the meantime, I was at this little deli on Ventura Bouelvard and sitting in the booth next to me was…❖

While people around the world may only associate Southern California with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood or the laid back attitude of sunny San Diego, So Cal has so much more to offer. Just outside of its celebrated urban centers, it is a rugged place, a place of extremes, with hot red rock deserts, cold-water pacific islands with wild kelp beds, and snow capped mountain peaks. At least, that’s how I see Southern California. How do you see it? We want to know! We at Southern California Life Magazine are devoted to showing you all that it has to offer. We’ll close each issue showcasing the beauty of our region, with its landscapes, and landmarks. And we want you, our readers to participate.
