Years ago, one of my daughters worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. She invited me to view an installation she was particularly fond of and pointed me upstairs where the exhibit was located. I returned to her desk to inform her she had directed me to the wrong place. “There’s nothing but piles of string in that room,” I said. “Yes, that’s the exhibit,” she replied.

At that moment, I clearly grasped the familiar term “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” My immediate reaction to the hundreds of yards of string that crisscrossed the walls of that museum space was pity for the unfortunate soul whose job it was to clean that up. But to countless other aficionados, that string was nothing short of a masterpiece. Art is a truly subjective experience. There are specific colors, genres and expressions that appeal to some yet repel others. And the more one is exposed to styles, techniques and art forms, the better that individual’s unique tastes are refined. People learn what they like, often by realizing what they don’t. There’s a particular section in the Southland where art-seekers visit to refine their appreciation for creative skill. The “Downtown Los Angeles Arts District” is rapidly expanding into a community where creative types go for inspiration and where they take their work to inspire others. You can read about this emerging area on page 68. This, our Arts and Culture issue, also features other creative outlets in Southern California such as the Santa Ana Arts Walk. We also highlight Jonathan Cain, a musical artist and co-writer of some of Journey’s most popular songs, and Danielle Herrington, the 2018 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover model, a wonderful woman and a flawless subject in photographic arts. AMUSEMENT PARK AGENCY CELEBRATES THREE DECADES Ad agency formerly known as DGWB fêtes its 30th by shining the light on homeless issues in its hometown with message of “Love Thy Neighbor (hood).” An integral part of Santa Ana’s Artists Village since 1999, the agency has developed a strong collaborative relationship with its hometown city. Instead of focusing on itself during its 30th year, agency partners are spotlighting FACES OF SANTA ANA, an arts-based nonprofit honoring Santa Ana’s homeless population. Brian Peterson, an automotive designer at Kia Motors, founded the organization after meeting a homeless neighbor and asking to paint his portrait. It was then he discovered the impact that art and creativity, especially in the form of a portrait, can have in restoring hope. Peterson has since recruited other local artists to join the effort, depositing money into a personal “love account” to cover participants’ miscellaneous living and job-training expenses. He has also raised money to provide wheelchairs and other resources for residents in need, led a FACES OF SANTA ANA oil-paining class at Santa Ana High School and completed a 300-square-foot mural on the side of a new permanent shelter that houses several residents honored by his program. ❖

TODAY, THE SWEEPING RANCHO THAT ONCE BELONGED

to preservationist and Hollywood actor Leo Carrillo is a hub for art, nature conservation and numerous community enrichment programs. It’s a tranquil oasis where visitors can experience an historic, Spanish Colonial home on 27 acres filled with indigenous vegetation; a place where peacocks — descendants of the original lineage — roam freely just as they did nearly a century ago. City of Carlsbad Historic Sites Manager Mick Calarco, says, “It’s really an incredible place. You can come for picnics and guided tours where we highlight the many plants, landscaping and architecture. Leo Carrillo loved California and when people come to the ranch, it’s very evident what his passion was and what he was trying to create, even all of these years later.” Born into a prominent Spanish Castilian family in 1881, Leopoldo Antonio Carrillo would begin his life in Los Angeles on the Pueblo — known today as the birthplace of L.A. — and make an indelible mark on Southern California, Hollywood and ultimately the entire country. His mother, Fransisca Bolden Carrillo, was one of three sisters who would make by hand California’s first American flag. His father, Juan J. Carrillo, would set in place the earliest foundations of the city of Santa Monica. The elder Carrillo was also the first judge, mayor and city trustee of Santa Monica as well as Los Angeles’ first chief of police. And his parents weren’t the only ones who’d held prominent positions. Leo’s great-great grandfather, Jose Raimundo Carrillo, a captain in the Spanish Portola, became the Presidio (mayor) of San Diego in the 1700s. His marriage to Tomasa Ignacia Lugo was even performed by fellow Spaniard and founder of San Diego, Father Junipero Serra, in 1781. Leo would come by his spirit of leadership and activism effortlessly and at the same time, develop a love of the American West. “Growing up, Leo spent a lot of time on his uncle’s rancho. He idolized the lives of the caballeros and cowboys of his youth; Leo had romanticized these ideas as a child and wanted to recreate them as an adult,” says Calarco. H

...CISCO AND PANCHO REALLY BROKE OUT OF THOSE STEREOTYPES FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. BY PLAYING THE GOOD GUYS, IT CHANGED THE PUBLIC’S PERCEPTION. THEY BECAME HEROES. Carrillo would eventually find the perfect way to reconstruct the ideal life he’d known as a boy on an old adobe farmstead in San Diego. “Leo had an extremely successful career in Hollywood, but one that was also very demanding. So he was looking for a place — a second home — to serve as a getaway from his busy life as an actor,” Calarco says. Carrillo would purchase a deserted homestead called Rancho Agua Hedionda, which had belonged to Matthew Kelly, one of the founders of Carlsbad. “He arrives in Carlsbad in 1937 and buys several hundred acres of that rancho. There wasn’t much here at the time except for an adobe, which was in ruins on the property,” says Calarco. Carrillo loved his new retreat and would immediately set about perfecting it. “Many people think all of the buildings there today are from the 18th century. While they are extremely old, this is not the case. Leo preserved the original 1800s adobe and renamed it Rancho de los Kiotes. He would renovate that existing building, plus build new ones, staying true to the period by designing structures that took after the original one. Carrillo would also build stables for his family’s many horses, along with numerous other stucco and wood-frame buildings,” he says. Carrillo felt it was extremely important to make use of what was there structure-wise, as well as make the most of nature, integrating living space with the environment.

“Leo was focused on conservation and preservation. It was something that was very meaningful to him. He would spend 20 years serving on the California State Beaches and Parks Commission. In 1959, Carrillo was featured on the television show ‘This is Your Life’. Will Rogers, a close friend of Carrillo’s also on the commission, appeared on that episode. Rogers dedicated an entire coastline to be named after his friend — Malibu’s Leo Carrillo State Beach — in honor of the work he’d done,” says Calarco. Just as his parents and great-grandparents before him had done, Leo Carrillo had made a difference during the course of his life by helping to preserve many of the aspects (such as ocean, plant and wildlife) which to this day, make Southern California a place that’s unlike any other; and the actor would make a difference in another area as well. “Leo Carrillo had more than 90 motion pictures to his credit, from silent films on. He was very popular and loved by many for the roles he played. He’d originally gotten his start doing Vaudeville, then went to work for Sam Warner doing movies. He was a huge hit from the start. Out of all his characters, probably the one that remains the most well-known was his role as Pancho in the ‘Cisco Kid’. The series filmed from 1950 until 1956, and they made more than 156 episodes during that time. Carrillo’s character was the sidekick of ‘Kid’ who was played by Duncan Renaldo. Both men wanted people to think differently about Spanish-speaking actors. They were aware of the public’s opinion in terms of how they’d been portrayed up until that time, and wanted to change that mindset. Previously the roles were always that of Banditos — the bad guys; Cisco and Pancho really broke out of those stereotypes for the first time ever. By playing the good guys, it changed the public’s perception. They became heroes,” he says. Today, Carrillo’s legacy remains strongly intact. His “Pancho” character is among the most groundbreaking and memorable in television history and his rancho is still very much alive with the spirit of pride and leadership that he was known for. Calarco says, “The feeling of what he set out to create has lasted all of these years. You can truly feel what life was like during the time he and his family lived here; it really is like stepping back in time. His legacy is still very much alive.” ❖

Hotel Figueroa in DTLA Not since the golden age of the 1920s has Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) experienced such a dynamic renaissance. Near Staples Center, Microsoft Theater, Orpheum Theatre, The Grammy Museum, and surrounded by art galleries, shops and some 700 restaurants, HOTEL FIGUEROA is enjoying its own rebirth. Another Moroccan-themed Spanish Colonial originally built in 1926 as an exclusive hotel for women, Hotel Figueroa recently completed a two-year restoration reclaiming its colorful legacy. The Arts Historically, Santa Ana has always been enriched, pulled forward by the diversity of what it proudly represents. Since 1913, for instance, the Yost Theater on Spurgeon St. has pushed the boundaries of cutting-edge and culturally-relevant entertainment beginning with vaudeville and silent film, to Mexican cinema, and now state-of-the-art concert events. Today, tourists can also visit the Bowers Museum on Main St., which was built in 1936, and enjoy 100,000 examples of Mesoamerican, Native American, Asian, and African art. For those with a love of science, Discovery Cube Orange County – also on Main St. – will strike awe with its solar-cubic design and 100 enlightening exhibits housed inside. Undoubtedly, food is something that the population of the eleventh largest city in California takes very seriously. Places to Shop Built in 1958, MainPlace Mall on Main St. has revamped its 1.1 million square-footage and adapted itself to a changing marketplace that demands more than just the usual fare. It's OUE Skyspace LA, one of Southern California's most breathtaking attractions situated nearly 1,000 feet above street level in the U.S. Bank Building at 633 W. 5th Street in downtown Los Angeles. Owned since 2013 by Singapore-based Overseas Union Enterprise Ltd. (OUE), it is currently the 13th tallest building in the U.S. and first North American venture for OUE. OUE Skyspace LA opened in June 2016 to provide unprecedented, unobstructed 360-degree views of the fast-changing Downtown L.A. skyline and surrounding communities stretching to the horizon in every direction. You can start your Skyspace adventure on the second floor of the U.S. Bank Tower. Upon entering, you are immediately immersed in contemporary music and wallmounted light monitors before being sped by elevator up to the 54th floor. There, you are encircled by a 360-degree virtual topography wall with spectacular video highlighting various points of interest around Los Angeles. Adults as well as kids will find themselves fascinated by the shadow wall that reflects their own body movements through interactive technology. And don’t forget to stop by the illusory infinity mirror on the floor that appears to penetrate hundreds of feet straight down through the center of the building. After exploring all the interactive experiences on the 54th floor, continue by elevator to the 70th floor where you are arrive nearly 1,000 feet above the city. The observation space is on both the 69th and 70th floors where, on a clear day, the 360-degree views extend up to 34 miles. The two outdoor observation decks on the 69th floor are also equipped with seating and free telescopes of varying heights including some for the younger visitors. For the ultimate thrill, envision stepping off the 70th floor into an enclosed all-glass tubular slide affixed to the outside of the tower and sitting on a special mat that speeds you down 45 feet to the 69th floor with nothing but 1.25-inch thick clear glass between you, the breathtaking panoramas and street activity some 1,000 ft. below. It is called Skyslide and once inside Skyspace, you can purchase as many Skyslide rides as you wish for those of ages five years and up. OUE Skyspace and Skyslide are already a DTLA (Downtown Los Angeles) must for locals and tourists from around the globe. Daytrippers can take the train to Union Station and use various types of city transportation or park their own cars in one of the nearby lots such as Westlawn Parking at 524 West Flower. For those on a tight schedule, the OUE building has many local food options including sandwiches, wraps, snacks along with bottled and canned beverages on the observation levels. YOGA IN THE SKY WITH SKYSLIDES Yoga is a popular ongoing activity open to the public and available at Skyspace. Outside instructors specialize in creating the perfect Zen, exercising to music that compliments the class and generally hold their classes between the enclosed private event space on the 70th floor and on one of the terraces. Danielle Herrington, The sky is limit for

who cemented her legacy in the modeling world after being selected as the cover model for the 2018 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Only a year after her first big break as part of the SI Swim Rookie Class, Danielle Herrington has taken the industry by storm.

In an Instagram video posted by Sports Illustrated, Herrington was surprised with a face-to-face meeting with her idol, Tyra Banks, who revealed to her that she had landed the iconic SI Swimsuit Issue cover. “I honestly thought we were crashing her set” says Herrington. “She revealed it and for a moment, I wasn’t even looking at the cover; I was just looking at Tyra like ‘Oh my God! This is my idol.’” Herrington’s SI cover puts her in rarified air. She is the third African-American woman to be featured on the cover of the legendary magazine, following Beyonce Knowles Carter and Banks. She says hearing her name along with two of her biggest idols makes her stomach drop. “Basically, it just tells girls or anyone that literally anything is possible and that we are seeing a change in this industry in terms of body type, color, race, all of that... I’m so happy to be a part of this magazine which celebrates the differences,” says Herrington. From crazy schedules to workouts to travel, the life of a model can have its ups-and-downs. Herrington says there are a lot of aspects of the modeling life that most people wouldn’t expect. “People think it’s glitz and glamour, but there’s a lot of work behind the scenes,” she says. “[They] just see the jobs that you get, but they don’t see all the years of rejection.” Despite her huge successes, Herrington isn’t ready to rest on her laurels yet. The coming year will be packed with new projects, shows, and shoots. Sports Illustrated will soon be releasing a behind-the-scenes look at Herrington’s rise to stardom. “You get to follow me and my world and see a behind-

While it may seem like a whirlwind career, Herrington has been modeling for most of her life. “I was really young, about 8 years old, when I wanted to start modeling,” says Herrington. She spent years watching Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows and thumbing through fashion magazines inspired by iconic models like Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, and Kate Moss. Though she currently resides in New York, Herrington is originally from Compton, California. She recalls going to auditions and castings in Beverly Hills and seeing people’s reactions when she said where she was from. Herrington explains, “I was always kind of embarrassed about it, and then it came a point to where I just wanted to be proud of where I was from. You can come from Compton and still become a model and be whatever you want to be.” After her move to New York, Herrington’s career skyrocketed, landing a spot in the SI Swimsuit Rookie Class. She remembers being shy at the time and feeling “stage fright and like my knees were shaking… I was putting too much pressure on myself.” Unbeknownst to her, this shoot would be the start of a journey that would land her one of the most coveted features in modeling.

(SI was with Danielle the day her cover was revealed, and their cameras captured the whirlwind journey as she became SI Swimsuit’s newest superstar. Herrington’s new celebrity status has also allowed her to shift her focus outward. “This cover has obviously catapulted into the public eye, so I knew I wanted to give back,” says Herrington. She is the official Celebrity Ambassador for A Place Called Home's 12th Annual Stars & Strikes Celebrity Bowling Event, which raises funds and awareness for free

programs in education, the arts, athletics, and vocational preparation for youth in South Central Los Angeles. Now in the midst of her new-found prominence, Herrington is trying to take everything in and enjoy the moment. She explains, “This industry is not easy to be in because you’re being judged your whole career. You really have to be mentally strong and face a lot of rejection, but if you want it bad enough, then you'll keep going, keep working for it, and keep striving for success.” Expect to see a lot more from this young superstar — she’s not slowing down any time soon. ❖

o the world, the title “Don’t Stop Believin’” conjures up one of the greatest rock anthems ever recorded. For Jonathan Cain, a co-writer of the Journey song, it means so much more. They are the words of encouragement his father repeated to him so many times that they became the inspiration for a song he brought to writing partner Steve Perry.

It is also the title of his new memoir – an honest, revealing look at a man who has grappled with his faith, his marital faithfulness, two failed marriages, and the relationship with his children while being in a worldfamous band. Cain admits writing the book, which he began eight years ago, was a catharsis, often painful, which he says can be heard in the

audio version. “I wept in several places and they left it on the reading,” Cain says. One excruciating and defining event in Cain’s life occurred December 1, 1958 when the Chicago Catholic School he attended caught on fire and 92 children and three nuns perished. He was just eight years old. Until then, he described his childhood as idyllic. H

You’re a rocker. Go meet them.’ I couldn’t say no to him.” If he hadn’t gone to that audition… He got the gig, they toured with Journey and the rest is history. Cain has gone on to write such iconic songs as “Open Arms,” “Faithfully” and “Who’s Crying Now.”

Life was pretty great – I was a kid growing up in a candy store. And I loved Jesus. I’ve got this church and these great priests.” Cain wanted to be a priest until the tragedy. He became disillusioned with the lack of transparency. “They (the church) wanted to sweep it under the rug,” Cain says. “We weren’t allowed to talk about it.” He felt grateful to be alive and music provided a balm. “Out of the ashes comes a determination, comes a new birth,” he says. “Out of any pain you have a chance to be reborn. That determined me to maybe over achieve. I had to run away from it; I had to run fast. In therapy I still shed a tear over it.”

ne of his proudest moments was in 2017 when Journey was awarded the Music Hall of Fame. “The Hall of Fame is such an honor. It’s almost like a dream. 'Is it possible that we can even get there' was a question in my mind. It’s a neat thing that the fans voted. It’s an acknowledgement of all the years that you try to make a difference with the music in people’s lives. We were the most voted band that year. And to stand on that stage with Steve Perry, looking at an era gone by… That Steve Perry era was truly six years of supernatural songwriting and

Everything that Steve and I and the band shared those six years was pretty magical.” Now living in Orlando with his third wife, Minister Paula White, Cain is still touring with Journey, maintains his studio in Nashville, records Christian music and is on a path to self-awareness. Writing the book gave him insight. He realized some of the patterns he had fallen into were detrimental to the man he was, he says. He began to live a double life. Meeting White, therapy, counseling with his children and letters to his father who is now gone all help him strive to be closer to “the guy my father raised,” Cain says. ❖

He vowed to succeed in music. His father pushed him toward the passion of music which his son had always been good at. Cain says a big theme in the book is “you’re not always who they say you are. There’s only one person who knows who you are and that’s the Good Lord.” He says he was knocked down multiple times – told he couldn’t sing, couldn’t write, but he kept getting up and figured out that co-writing was what he was good at when he wrote with Robbie Patton who told him to try out for The Babys. “I laughed at him and said, ‘But they wear make-up.’ He was English and said, ‘Oh dahling, don’t be so silly.

t It’s a funky hipster hangout — with killer potatoes. And being hipster-owned, you know perfection is in its by-laws, by golly. Let’s start with the coffee, which is excellent. Even better, the coffee cups are 2-3 times larger than normal — ensuring that you’ll be properly caffeinated before going out to “seize the day.” Food portions are massive, too — and the food itself, savory. Order the veggie scramble and you’ll get veggies cooked to perfection, al dente. To go a bit spicier, order the ginormous Jambalaya dish and top it off with three over-easy eggs. So good, it’ll make you want to throw a “fais-do-do” (Cajun dance party). Now, the potatoes. Word to the wise: get the upgrade. You may not get a complimentary cocktail and extra leg room, but you’ll definitely find more room in your stomach for these savory spuds made with brussels sprouts and bacon — spiced with rosemary. The secret is in the soaking — potatoes sit overnight in salt, then they’re seasoned with a dash of balsamic vinegar. Most dishes include a sourdough English muffin with fresh whipped butter. “Whip it … whip it good” — Breakfast Republic is definitely one republic for which you’ll stand — saluting its near-gastronomical perfection.

This French jewel enjoys crepe success as a modest, but lovely, place to enjoy authentic, fruity French crepes (no rubber used here), croquettes, quiches and a slew of pastries with panache. Co-owner Sandrine Gaudin is warm and personable — making you feel like you’ve just walked into a friend’s country French farmhouse. Evidence of this familylike atmosphere can be seen in the number of repeat customers. “You can’t go wrong with anything on this menu,” swears one loyal customer. That’s not hyperbole. After a cup of c'est délicieux cappuccino and a croquette filled with tomato, cheese and spinach or a French onion quiche, you’ll be ready to take on the world — at least until around 2:00 pm, when some Chocolatine goodies-to-go (French pastries) will be just the sugar bump you need to get over that “afternoon slump.” A couple of macarons and you’ll soon be dancin’ the “macaroni”—in five different flavors, no less.

What happens after a ’90s video store gets laid to rest? It gets reincarnated into Arcade Coffee Roasters in Riverside — considered by locals to be the best java joint in town. It’s also the fulfillment of a dream for co-owners Stevie Hasemeyer and Shane Levario, who were tired of Riverside being regarded as LA’s “backwards cousin” that all the cool people wanted to get away from. “We wanted to make something here that people could excited about … to make a cultural shift,” said Hasemeyer. That shift has happened. Established in 2013, Arcade Coffee Roasters lives and breathes specialty coffee. If coffee roasting is defined as “the craft of transformation,” then Arcade has struck just the right notes, creating taste-bud altering “music” with its mochas … and cappuccinos, and espressos, and lattes. Arcade’s impressive growth has now expanded into hearty, yet elevated, weekend brunch fare. The star experience is Chef Marissa’s buttery grits with a poached egg nestled on top and the perfect touch of peppery spice. For meateaters, Arcade offers a roasted pork sandwich made with fresh, rustic sourdough bread—a fave brunch item that manages to catch all of the pan drippings without losing its marvelous crunch. If you’re looking for a “familiar” coffee shop ambiance with couches and chairs crammed into tight spaces (where no one knows your name), you may want to go elsewhere. Arcade is barebones with an open, industrial, minimalist decor that may feel too “cold” for some. The Back Story It started in 1769 when Father Juan Crespi was accompanying an expedition and thought this virgin land with its rich soil and river would be a good location for a town which, in his diary, he called Our Lady, Queen of the Angels. In 1781, El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles was officially established and, after a century of slow growth, vines from Bordeaux were planted and the first winery established by French winemaker JeanLouis Vignes. Other vintners and fruit growers followed, and by the end of the 19th century, oranges and grapefruit had become the area's primary products. The industrial boom followed the arrival of the railroads which built depots, warehouses, and rail yards throughout the area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Manufacturers mainly produced bakery products, women’s clothing, furniture, auto parts, and machinery. In 1922, it was re-zoned to eliminate all residential housing and make more room for retail and manufacturing, solidifying the Arts District as an industrial center. After World War II, land parcels grew scarce, prices increased and manufacturers were attracted by the less-expensive outlying areas such as the City of Commerce. As manufacturing exited, the warehouses of the Arts District stood vacant, and the neighborhood began to decay.

Arrival of the Artists In the 1970s, a group of artists seeking to escape the expensive rents in surrounding cities saw an opportunity for low-cost live/work studios in the empty, run-down warehouses. Avant-garde galleries and artist hangouts quickly popped up and in 1981, the City introduced the Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program, once again legalizing residential use of the buildings. The arts scene thrived in the 1980s under the guidance of neighborhood activists led by Joel Bloom, the area’s unofficial mayor. In the 1990s, he successfully petitioned the City to officially designate the area the “Arts District.”

New Faces of Change Today, the Arts District is one of the country's most watched, fast-changing urban neighborhoods. It remains a vibrant mecca not only for artists and other creative industries such as film, TV, architecture, fashion, and green technology. Major developers are proposing ginormous residential and commercial centers that will cement the district's future as modernized key influencer in the DTLA social, economic and political scenes. In all, a whopping 23 mega projects are currently in the city pipeline just for the Arts District. The biggest include two 58-storey towers, rental units,

Recently-completed renovations include the American Hotel, former site of Al’s Bar which once presented legendary artists including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Misfits, and Beck. On land where vineyards and citrus groves once flourished stands AT MATEO, a newly-finished series of brick and glass structures comprising the Arts District's first major retail complex and 540-car parking structure. AMP Lofts, a dog-friendly complex with a large commercial courtyard, outdoor seating, gym, pool, sauna, clubhouse and workshop, is scheduled to open next year. And so it continues...

EdiBOL is known for its inventive handcrafted, artisan bowls, and for Italian, there's Bestia in its raw industrial space setting, where you can savor fantastic handmade pastas, house-cured salumi (cold cuts), wood fired pizzas and more. Urban Radish, a grocer with charcuterie and cheese counters, sandwiches and market-fresh salads is also a great place to pick up wine for dinner. Vegans will love Café Gratitude and those into raw vegan also flock to The Springs which adds a wellness center, juice bar and yoga classes to the mix.

The Social Hour The bar scene is also exploding with new establishments joining longtime favorites. Since 2001, Angel City Brewery has been an integral part of the neighborhood offering brewery tours, a regular bar and weekly events. Arts District Brewing Company opened in 2015 with nine original beers and now offers 30+ all brewed on-site. They also have a full bar, large entertainment area, photo booth, games including pinball, skeeball and much more. Mumford Brewing Company offers tastes of L.A.-inspired beers like The Black Mamba, an American black ale named after the Lakers' Kobe Bryant. Offering just a few snacks, you're welcome to bring your own bites or order from nearby restaurants. Ritter explained that the concierge would be present to answer any questions, recommend restaurants and give anecdotes and fun facts between stops. She explained they serve snacks and are also available to help procure discounted tickets to attractions for those who don’t have the Hopper Plus Package. Conceived of in July, 2017 by Wen Zheng, Tom D’Amato and Doug Porter, the Hopper was designed to fill a much needed gap. “They’re all hospitality industry professionals,” Ritter explained. “They saw a unique opening in San Diego and really felt they could add to tourism in Southern California in a large way. So in all their little niches of what they could do, they felt they could take this to the next level.” Four busses leave from Old Town at 9:00, 9:30 and 10:00 daily. Guests can meet the bus at any place on the route depending on where they’re staying. Guests will be given fabric wrists bands with chips inside that will be scanned at each stop. Those with the Hopper Plus plan will be in special lines at the attractions also. “If you got to Old Town and want to explore but the Embarcadero wasn’t something you wanted to explore, but you wanted to see Seaport Village, you could pass that stop and go there,” Ritter explained. “The loop is about two hours. If you hopped on at Gaslamp and didn’t want to get off at Balboa or Old Town, but wanted to get off at Embarcadero, you could stay on the bus and listen to the concierge. Every half an hour a bus be at one of our six locations.” Porter said the partnership with sites is growing as they discuss with other attractions. “The idea is to make sure our clients and guests have a wide variety of things to choose from,” Porter said. “The families, the business partners, the retired couple or family reunion can come in and enjoy San Diego as they wish. You can spend all day on the Midway. This is really aimed at people who want more of a sampling. HE MONTEREY PENINSULA’S SPECTACULAR LANDSCAPE, WHICH

includes white-sand beaches, striking coastal bluffs, tall pines and cypress trees makes a perfect setting for a restful getaway. My wife and I thought we would spend a few days relaxing with a book, and enjoying the ocean views. We quickly learned that we could easily spend a week or more enjoying the many amenities and local activities of Pebble Beach and the surrounding areas. Sure, sitting on our balcony at The Lodge overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the 18th green was breathtaking, especially after we learned that our room was right above the one where Tiger Woods stays when visiting Pebble Beach. But we quickly realized that we couldn’t just hang out in our room. There was too much to do in and around the resort. Stunning scenes from every angle provide a magnificent backdrop for scenic hikes, bike rides and drives. There are guided tours to nearby missions, Big Sur and Point Lobos. There’s plenty of wine tasting through the Northern California wine-country, wonderful restaurants to sample creations by celebrated chefs, and ample shopping at destinations like Cannery Row and Carmelby-the-Sea. On the property, there is a variety of boutiques and gifts shops such as the Kids’ Shop, Marchesa Jewelry, The Beach Club Tennis Shop, an array of golf shops featuring game attire and gifts, and Golf Links to the Past, which features golf memorabilia and artifacts.

Clearly, the highlight of the stay was playing Pebble Beach Golf Links. I convinced my wife to tag along in a cart, and it was equally thrilling for her to enjoy the gorgeous views from each hole on the course. It was slow playing, particularly because every group seemed to have its own gallery (Pebble Beach permits ride-alongs and walk-alongs). But there was so much to look at that the pace really didn’t matter, and maybe even helped us take in more of the atmosphere. We enjoyed a walk through the grounds of The Lodge, looking at the historic pictures of Pebble Beach that hang in the halls, spending lots of money in the golf shops surrounding the putting green by the lobby entrance, and taking in the captivating view that greeted us in the Terrace Lounge. Dinner in the Stillwater Bar and Grill featured a high-end menu and a panoramic view of the 18th hole along the water. The next night at The Bench was a bit more casual, but an equally great meal and setting. It is rare to find a resort property that is situated in such a perfect location as to provide each of its restaurants and features with tremendous golf course and ocean views. The Lodge at Pebble Beach is first and foremost a golf resort with world-class courses. But it’s so much more, from the beach and tennis club to the world-class spa, the stunning 17-Mile Drive, and even a sunset bagpipe recital at Spanish Bay. One of the newest additions to the property is Fairway One at The Lodge. Located along the first fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, it offers an augmented guest experience with large guest rooms and a private setting perfect for visitors seeking an enhanced situation. For such a luxurious resort, it is not pretentious. The staff is accommodating and welcoming, as though they know they’re an important part of the experience. Pebble Beach may have once been on our bucket list, but now that we’ve experienced it, it will be on our annual to-do list. ❖

come back home from our trips sharing the stories that met the expectations of the storyteller and meet the expectations of the audience. But, when I sit down and think about it, it’s not true. If you ignore accents, I have found that people are pretty much the same wherever you travel, or for those of us based in Southern California, wherever you live. If you venture outside of Southern California and treat people with kindness and warmth, you don’t have to travel to the Midwest to find the same thing in others. And if you’re looking to be treated rudely, you don’t have to travel 3,000 miles to New York. You can find it right here, or anywhere in this great country, just by being rude yourself. Sure, the Florida Keys has a reputation as a haven for the last of the hippies, the home of personalities, but I’ll stack a Saturday at Venice Beach up against any day in the Keys. When traveling, or even right here at home, I think we find exactly what we’re looking for, or expect to find, no matter where we are. No doubt, with Southern California’s population bumping up against 25 million, we have more of everything than just about anywhere else in the country, or even the world, and there are characteristics of SoCal that make us different — in some cases even unique. But, in the end, people are people and those of us who make up the wildly diverse, exciting, frustrating place we know as SoCal are no better or worse than those you find anywhere else. Now granted, we may have better tans.... ❖

’VE BEEN WRITING THIS COLUMN FOR FOUR YEARS

now, since the magazine first started, and it’s been a treat each and every issue. Every time it’s time to write a new column, I look for the things that make Southern California different, even unique. It’s not too hard to find them; the traffic, Hollywood, the weather, the drought, the beaches — the list goes on and on. And during that same time, with the exception of Alaska, I have visited every other state. And when visiting, I look wherever I am for the things that make that state or region stand out. The excitement of the theater district in Manhattan, the quirkiness of the Florida Keys or maybe it's the unmatched beauty of the Montana backcountry. I’ve met people everywhere I’ve traveled, from camping at out-of-the way RV parks to the nicest hotels and resorts. I hear all of the same clichés about the different regions and cultures in the country; the rednecks of the South, the real Americans of the Midwest, the rudeness of those who live in the Northeast and the fierce independence of those who live in the Northwest. And if I look for those things, it’s easy to find them. One rude cabbie in New York confirms that all New Yorkers are rude. One person mumbling at grocery store in Oregon about there being too many Californians moving there seems to speak for all Oregonians. One sweet waitress at a small café in Nebraska reminds me that everyone in the Midwest is kind and polite, salt of the earth. We see that because it’s what we expect to see, and when we do, no matter how infrequently, it confirms what we already thought and what we already knew and we
