REBECCA GRAY GROSSMAN

HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN CAPTIVATED BY LEGENDARY ACTOR HARRISON FORD THROUGHOUT THE YEARS OF HIS ILLUSTRIOUS FILM CAREER? I certainly have and continue to marvel at how he brings to life characters that beguile and charm moviegoers and fans worldwide. It’s little known, however, that he serves as Vice Chair of the Board and spokesman for Conservation International, an organization that implements unique methods and solutions that demonstrate with great power and persuasion how protecting nature creates positive change for people. Enjoy reading our cover story featuring the multi-faceted Harrison Ford on page 50. On the topic of conservation and eco-awareness, we also feature television personality Zack Heart (Outback Zack, The Man From Down Under) and actress Tanna Frederick, both arduous strivers in nature conservation. Furthermore, we explore a number of recherché and interesting locals in this issue … all well worth tracking in the New Year. I often wonder if there isn’t a rare elixir in the water in our geographic area that somehow gives rise to these insightful and self-directed individuals with an enlightened view of what really matters in the fast-paced world around us, while remaining connected, driven and passionate. Whatever it might be, we are grateful to have the opportunity to highlight these remarkable achievers who keep our communities thriving and contribute greatly to philanthropy, arts and entertainment.

The Earth is our precious home and making sure we preserve its natural resources for our children and generations to come is vitally important. Our travel editor, once again, spotlights a striking region of the world, that reminds us of just how prodigious and diverse our planet is; and provides priceless details for travel buffs and adventure seekers who enjoy deviating off the beaten track, see page 66. Considering we are starting out a New Year, and this is our Health and Beauty Issue, you will find a number of articles focusing on ways to live healthy, look good, and maintain a vibrant life-style, as well as, local women (including myself) “Redefining 50” on page 56. There is also a new section on anti-aging and longevity entitled “Stop The Clock!” featured on page 38. I hope you find our editorials and viewpoints appealing, good-natured and informative. We love hearing from our readers, so please stay in touch with us via email, blog Facebook or Twitter. Check out our website or “APP” for information on our next community mixer celebrating the New Year, as well as special events and promotions you won’t want to miss. WHITNEY NOELLE

WRITING A LETTER ADDRESSING THE NEW YEAR IS A BIT OF A DAUNTING TASK. It is a tour de force of sorts, begging for an authentic sense of sentimentality and thoughtfulness — an idea that is powerful enough to boldly move you into the unknown. As I sit here sifting through my thoughts, a boy no more than five or six dashes into the coffee shop with his mother. The purity of his excitement and tenacity brings me an overwhelming sense of joy. In this moment I’m given a second to reflect on the New Year and what it truly means to me. Increasingly so, I find that many people today (myself included) have a great ambition to constantly do more. Whether this is the new norm given our shared state of affairs or fundamentally rooted in human nature it is difficult to distinguish. Whatever the case may be, it is paramount to never lose touch with the simple, yet seemingly complicated, idea of play. When life becomes a nicely and sometimes not-so-nicely compiled list of things to do, it can be easy to become overwhelmed and lose sight of one’s self. This year, let’s give ourselves the freedom and the space to play, to experience those things that give us the exhilaration and tenacity that this little boy so purely feels. Move out of your own way, and allow yourself to take the time to open up to everything around you. The thing about this vague idea of play is that you don’t know what it will lead to, and you owe it to yourself to find out. By maintaining the idea of play in your thoughts, your actions, and your whole sense of being, you will open yourself up to those parts of you that may have been forgotten, misplaced, or perhaps just lost for a little while. As Emerson once said, “it is a happy talent to know how to play.” Here’s wishing you an incredible start to 2014!

ZACK HEART

‘OUTBACKZACK’ HAS HEART IN RIGHT PLACE PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MR. ZACH HEART

IF YOU HAVEN'T HEARD OF HIM YET, YOU SOON WILL. AUSTRALIAN-BORN AND MALIBU-NATIVE ZACK HEART IS A RISING BUT HUMBLE STAR THAT IS POISED TO BE TV'S NEXT RENOWNED ANIMAL AFICIONADO. DISSIMILAR TO JACK HANNA OR HIS LATE COUNTRYMAN STEVE IRWIN BEFORE HIM, HEART ‘S PRIMARY AIM IS TO PROMOTE ANIMAL CONSERVATION AND AWARENESS THROUGH A VARIETY OF CHANNELS.

“WE ARE MAMMALS JUST AS THEY ARE AND HAVE EMOTIONS AND SENSES AS THEY DO.” Above

all, Heart's goal is to get every person to “respect” his or her animal neighbors, and to do so by spreading the word. For instance, Heart say’s “the emotional lives of animals and their family structures need to be recognized, essentially they're just trying to live their lives as we are.” Talk is one thing, but Heart has the history to show that he also walks the walk. One notable example was his courageous involvement in publicizing the inordinate number of animals that perished during Australia's 2009 fires. Compelled to make a difference, Heart organized a special TV broadcast, which raised half a million dollars for the “kangaroos, wombats, birds, [etc.]” that “were on the edge of their lives,” which thusly highlighted how “we are mammals just as they are and have emotions and senses as they do.” That uncanny ability to look into an animal's eyes and meet at a mutual wavelength of empathy is something that stirred in Heart since childhood. Growing up, he recalls the “sanctuary of animals,” especially ducks, that

kept him company; however, it is one experience that, in retrospect, underscores the urgency of (endangered) animal conservation. It was at the age of nine, while swimming in a lake in Malaysia, that he formed an emotional bond with a hairy-nosed otter—a species that has now dwindled down to roughly 87 left in the wild. It is that wonderment and curiosity about animals since adolescence—to determine “what are they thinking and why they do what they do?”—that fuels Heart's beating heart for them as an adult. His vast experience has sharpened his perceptive acuity to the extent that he can “see each animal being's unique personality” and to know without reservation that they understand us better than you think. To have been able to objectively discern each animal for what it is would not have been possible if not for Heart's indiscriminate acceptance of each animal he comes across—“from spiders to snakes, rats to skunks, koalas to crows.” His profound realization, solidified over years of experience,

I23I WESTLAKE MAGAZINE • JAN.FEB2014

about how animals, “especially mammals that have very similar neurobiological systems to us, meaning they feel emotions and suffer just as we do... is proof positive that we must try putting ourselves in their shoes and see the world through their eyes.” Ultimately, we must never lose sight of the fact that every species has evolved to earn its rightful place in the landscape and it is the “symbiotic relationship between flora and fauna” that drives healthy functioning ecosystems. If even one piece of the puzzle were displaced (e.g., “the gray wolf being hunted and killed in the 1900s”) then the negative effects would cascade all the way down to the grasses. Through social media and his latest show, “Outback Zack, The Man From Downunder,” Heart has every intention of shining a resplendent light upon threatened species (i.e., polar bears, gray wolves, otters). This doubtlessly begins and ends by “reaching the humanity in people” via an all-important education about the “values, ethics and science” pertaining to animal conservation.

RACING TO

BY JYNARRA BRINSON AS YOU WALK through the foyer of the new Chandelier Room at Santa Anita Park

in nearby Arcadia, California, you can’t help but notice the newly renovated motif reflecting a fresh level of sophistication, glamour and elegance. The same could be said about the renovations the entire Park has undergone. The transformations are more than impressive. In its heyday, the track's races attracted such stars as Betty Grable, Lana Turner, Edgar Bergen, Jane Russell, Cary Grant, Ester Williams, and many more. And Bing Crosby, Joe E. Brown, Al Jolson, and Harry Warner were all stockholders. Today, Santa Anita Park thoroughbred racetrack has retained its art deco classiness … the style it was initially designed with in 1934; however, it is now infused with a whimsical, modern and natural light. The Chandelier Room, now filled with brilliant sunlight, provides the newly refurbished chandeliers with a dazzling effect. The brick wall that once separated the doors atop the stairs has been replaced with large windows. On the other side of the windows is a stylish patio and balcony. Refreshing and appealing at every corner, the Park aims to make the track a place people are drawn to every weekend -- a place for the “Sunday Funday” of the future. Track chairman, Keith Brackpool, recognizes the alliance between the attendee and the Park. He believes that if they want the people to invest in them, then they need to invest in people. And invest he has. The $15 million dollar renovation began in July and was speedily completed, especially considering the time constraints. Certain hours were unworkable because the noise would disrupt the calm, docile subsistence of the horses. Inarguably, new technology is an added character to the sleek, modern tables. Each table in the Turf Terrace, which sits directly above the entrance gate for horses and jockeys, sports a brand new flat-screen television that gives fans access to hundreds of channels, both domestic and international. The brick barriers once separating the sections are now glass so you can see the track no matter where you are located. The Clubhouse not only has dozens of televisions, but also docking stations attached to pristine, marble tables that split the room. Plug in, enjoy a cocktail or a bite to eat, watch the races, football games or catch up on work, the choice is yours. For the more adventurous palette, the Park now offers craft beers by local breweries, artisan sandwiches, fresh sushi and a noodle bar aptly named “Pick 3.” However, if you should fancy the classic hot-dog, don’t worry, they still have them. The newly named Eddie Logan Suite is by invitation only, and provides guests with an unprecedented amount of cachet and exclusivity. The room is partially indoor adjoined by an outdoor patio displaying the track

I28I WESTLAKE MAGAZINE • JAN.FEB2014

just below your feet. You can feel the thunder of the horses as they whoosh by. A few months ago, the Park hosted the 2013 Breeder’s Cup, featuring the fastest horses in the world being transported in from all over the globe to compete in two days of championship racing. Westlake Magazine was fortunate enough to attend and watch celebrity jockey, Aaron Gryder (featured on page 34) bring one of his horses in for a blue ribbon. Additionally, opening day was December 26th. With the Santa Anita Park poised for discovery and rediscovery, you can imagine how many horseracing enthusiast will be racing themselves to experience, not only the excitement and thrill of the races, but to also witness the new beautification of the oldest racetrack in California. Whether it is for a family adventure or for those that simply enjoy playing the ponies, The Santa Anita Park will be a California frontrunner destination in 2014!

DANA WORKMAN

“SHE POSSESSES THE INTENSE DESIRE TO CONNECT WITH PEOPLE, PUT THEM AT EASE, MAKE THEM LAUGH.”

DANA WORKMAN A TV STAR WITH SPADES OF SINCERITY PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN MORALES

IT ISN'T OFTEN THAT SOMEONE BELIES HER YOUTH AS MUCH AS DANA WORKMAN DOES. HER ASTUTE MANNER AND VOICE REVEAL A MATURITY DECADES BEYOND HER PRESENT AGE. SHE HAS HAD MORE INTRIGUING AND FASTPACED EXPERIENCES IN PURSUIT OF HER CAREER THAN MOST PEOPLE HAVE IN A LIFETIME. HAVING FORGED HER WAY INTO THE DEMANDING WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT, SHE HAS EMERGED STRONGER THAN EVER, KNOWING EXACTLY WHO SHE IS AND WHAT SHE IS CAPABLE OF ACHIEVING.

While she is currently highly successful as a co-host/investigator on SyFy's Haunted Highway, she has had to pay her dues to arrive. Since the age of 16, her self-discipline, clear selfimage, and will to succeed have been constantly put to the test, such as often taking odd jobs like walking a pink donkey down Sunset Boulevard in a garish promotional stunt for Pink Taco's restaurant chain. Instead of folding under constrictions and setbacks to her aspirations, Dana . . . at 5' 3” . . . stood tall and laughed it off, never allowing her goals to become obscure. With hard work and an instinct for seizing opportunities as they come her way, she had the exceptional good fortune of being signed by her acting instructor, who also doubled as a talent manager. But Dana isn’t the ordinary actress who dreams of crying on cue in

I30I WESTLAKE MAGAZINE • JAN.FEB2014

a melodramatic scene for the ages. Instead, she possesses the intense desire to connect with people, put them at ease, make them laugh. Consequently, she has been cast in sitcoms like Malcolm in the Middle, 8 Simple Rules, and Complete Savages. These experiences have opened the door to what had been awaiting her from the beginning . . . hosting. The chance to play directly to the camera, and guide viewers through a passage of time, enabled Dana to portray a character that was too rich to be scripted . . . herself. Beginning with Victoria’s Secret TV, to Get Out, to Poker2Nite and on to a multitude of red carpet productions, she has been able to do what she does best . . . be charming, affable and funny. That said, being a host isn't all fun and games. It entails being a coordinator and organizer for the narrative of the night, a responsibility which Dana Workman takes very seriously and works very hard to perfect. Ironically, Dana now finds herself in a genre of entertainment that is more a plethora of shrieks than laughs. On Haunted Highway, she travels to remote areas with her co-investigator, Jack Osbourne, the famous son of Ozzy and Sharon. In a role similar to hosting, she has the responsibility to set the pace of the action— with headlight and camera—for the lip biting audience. Though chasing the paranormal is a unique medium of expression for Dana, she relishes close bonds with real people in preference to phantoms. Her natural affinity and warmness toward others compels her, even with her triumphs on national TV, to consider a vocation involving strong interpersonal relationships, along the lines of a school counselor. Her maternal instinct to make sure that those who are an essential part of her life are OK at all times is of primary concern and a blessing she is happily haunted by.

SAM MYERSON

“... MYERSON RESEARCHED THE TOP 10 MODELING AGENCIES, ATTENDED PRACTICALLY EVERY OPEN CALL.”

THE ASCENT OF MODELI ACTOR

SAM MYERSON LIFE SOMETIMES DEALS US WHAT MAY SEEM LIKE A STUMBLING BLOCK, BUT IN ACTUALITY IS A DOORWAY TO ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY. CERTAINLY, HAVING BEEN ADMITTED TO CAL POLY POMONA ON A SOCCER SCHOLARSHIP, AGOURA'S SAM MYERSON WOULD HAVE HAD EVERY REASON TO SULK WHEN HE IRRETRIEVABLY INJURED HIS KNEE. BUT, HE ASSESSED AND APPROACHED HIS PREDICAMENT WITH A DEGREE OF PRECOCIOUS POISE THAT WOULD BE THE ENVY OF EVEN THE TIME-TESTED WISE. So, compelled by a childhood curiosity for the limelight, Myerson researched the top 10 modeling agencies, attended practically every open call and, with an unflappable fervor, found himself in the auspicious position of being signed on the spot. Now, with the added weight of his portfolio and a keener sense of how he envisions his career, Myerson is one of Wilhelmina Models' top prospects. Not many 22-year-old males can say they were filmed while eating a steak dinner at Wolfgang Puck in Beverly Hills for Sweden's Top Model, let alone hobnobbing with the Playboy bunnies in between doing a modeling shoot on the lawn of Hugh Hefner's mansion. Yet, Myerson, equipped with a firm belief in himself, has never seemed out of place and, in fact, has kept looking ahead to realizing more of his goals in the entertainment industry.

Myerson's other dream, which happens to be a natural extension of modeling, has been to ply his craft as an actor, a path he has already made significant headway in after being discovered by talent manager, Holly Clark, while he was bar-backing at Cafe Fiore in Woodland Hills. At first sight, Clark instantly knew she had her prodigy, and Myerson knew he had the guiding hand that would adeptly steer his multifaceted career. Since their serendipitous encounter, Myerson has worked on two notable independent films, the most recent of which held is the lead role. The first is Mary Loss of Soul, a supernatural thriller that saw Myerson play the love interest of the title character. The experience entailed an exciting on-location shoot in the Massachusetts woods and, when the cameras stopped rolling, a surprise, cupcake-laden birthday celebration. His most recent project,

I32I WESTLAKE MAGAZINE • JAN.FEB2014

X Species, demanded rigorous rock-climbing training to prepare for a lead role that involved ascending a mountain and running ragged through New Mexico's darkest caves. While he has had ample formal training in front of the camera, Myerson isn't afraid to ask questions, nor is he divested of the humility required to seek counsel from established acting veterans, like Jose Zuniga, within the industry. Beyond the sharpening of his talent, Myerson is also all too aware of Hollywood's emphasis on appearance, and maintaining a fit image, which is earned by laboring tirelessly, six days a week, at the Spectrum Club. With the blank canvas of 2014 before him, Myerson has high hopes that he'll continue to resist the tempting allure of cheeseburgers, en route to solidifying a robust reputation as a young dramatic actor, not unlike a Zac Efron or Miles Teller.

TOP JOCKEY BY JYNARRA BRINSON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEY CARMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

I34I WESTLAKE MAGAZINE • JAN.FEB2014

HAMPION JOCKEY AARON TOD GRYDER sat in the bleachers at Santa Anita Park gazing at the majestic, snow shrouded San Gabriel Mountains, and reminisced about his remarkable career spanning over a quarter century. Aaron had spent his childhood summers with his grandparents at the Park, dashing for hours about the infield enclosed by the one mile dirt track while absorbing knowledge about the Sport of Kings.

C

At first he had a fear of horses. However, the spark ignited by the action at the track changed trepidation to affection for these regal creatures. At age four he decided he would become a jockey. He had never been on a horse until his trainer, former jockey Rudy Campas, placed him up on one when he was 13 years old. Campas readily recognized in Aaron a quality you can’t teach . . . instinct for horsemanship. “Rudy thought I was a natural because of my balance and quiet hands on a horse,” Gryder says. It was on that day that his fear of horses was replaced by love and respect for these magnificent animal athletes, and added unmeasured ambition toward his dream. Like anyone new to a sport Aaron experienced disappointments, but like all champion athletes he has never let temporary setbacks impede his way to the top. Campas sent him to Tijuana to sharpen his skills at Aqua Caliente Racetrack. It didn’t take long for word to spread about Aaron’s natural gift of expert horsemanship. He was fast gaining attention in the racing world. He was now ready for capturing the big purses. The time had finally come to wait in the starting gate next to jockeys he had idolized as a child— Bill Shoemaker and Laffit Pincay. The gates opened at Santa Anita Park and he was on his way. That was 26 years ago and over 3600 races won.

IN 2009, UP ON “WELL ARMED”, HE WON THE DUBAI WORLD CUP, A $6 MILLION PURSE RACE, THE BIGGEST IN THE WORLD.

Aaron has raced all over the world— Hong Kong, Australia, England, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai. He has won racing titles at Churchill Downs, Arlington Park, and Aqueduct Racetrack, and has competed in three Kentucky Derbies and won the 2012 Breeders Cup Marathon. In 2009, up on “Well Armed”, he won the Dubai World Cup, a $6 million purse race, the biggest in the world. Last year he captured the Brooklyn Handicap at Belmont Park, coming from twenty-five lengths behind on a wet track riding a 10-year old horse named “Calidoscopio”, proving his superb mastery and skill at urging and maneuvering his horse to the win . . . clearly championship performance at its peak. There is a video on YouTube showing this remarkable feat. See “YouTube Aaron Gryder on Calidoscopio” or scan the QR Code below to view this exciting and utterly breathtaking event that astounded and mesmerized the racing world! Calidoscopio was the same horse that he rode and won the 2012 Breeders Cup Marathon. His young son and daughter are of utmost importance to him. He volunteers at their school so frequently that their teachers know nothing about the extent of his traveling. “I don’t ever want my kids to say ‘my father was never around,’” he said. Last November Aaron was nominated for the 2014 George Woolf Award, which recognizes exemplary jockeys who display sportsmanship, respect, and character on and off the track. Jockeys are nominated and voted for by their peers. The time was 11:00 am on that morning at Santa Anita when Aaron fondly recalled his life’s work. Without any sign of weariness or fatigue, one would have never guessed he had been awake and at the track since 4 am. He is a professional, after all “I love the animals that I’m on and I get to watch the sunrise every morning at Santa Anita Park on these beautiful animals. I am grateful and blessed ” Gryder says. Aaron Gryder wants to be the first jockey on Dancing With the Stars. Readers, let’s do what we can to get him there!

TANNA FREDERICK

“...UNAWARE THAT HER EFFORTS WOULD SPARK A SIX-FILM-ANDCOUNTING COLLABORATION WITH THE AUTEUR.”

Just 45 mins from Broadway: (L-R) Judd Nelson, Tanna Frederick

TANNA FREDERICK HOLLYWOODRENAISSANCE WOMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROSE CEFALU

WHEN I CALLED ACTRESS TANNA FREDERICK ON HER CELL PHONE TO CONDUCT AN INTERVIEW FOR THIS PIECE, I NEVER EXPECTED THE CONVERSATION TO LAST A WHOPPING 64 MINUTES. BUT THERE I WAS, HANGING ON EVERY WORD, DELIVERED WITH AN EFFORTLESSLY DESCRIPTIVE PROSE BY THE EXCEPTIONALLY INTELLIGENT MS. FREDERICK. ENTIRELY COMFORTABLE IN HER OWN SKIN, HER RELAXED MANNER OF SPEAKING MADE IT SEEM LIKE I WAS RECONNECTING WITH AN OLD FRIEND. WITH EVERY SPOKEN EXCHANGE, IT HAD SOON DAWNED ON ME THAT SHE WOULD NOT BE WHO SHE IS IF NOT FOR THE SUM OF HER UNIQUE AND BOUNTIFUL LIFE EXPERIENCES.

In her young 34 years, she has the stories of 10 lives put together, none of which would have been possible if she had lacked the courage to put herself out there, vulnerable, in the unforgiving jungle of not only Hollywood, but the game of life. Growing up with a loving, supportive family in Mason City, Iowa, Frederick would have had every reason to play it safe by setting a linear but stable path for herself, marked by not too many highs or lows. However, in what would be the first of many calculated risks in her life, she picked up her bags, kissed her parents farewell and embarked to the City of Angels, where she knew not a soul. She had to make the transition work, which often led to foolhardy decisions like auditioning at a stranger's residence. Nonetheless, throughout her struggles, she never allowed the insidiousness of cynicism to wash over her.

I36I WESTLAKE MAGAZINE • JAN.FEB2014

Then, in an act of pure, naïve faith, she picked up her pen and stayed up all night to write a threepage, effusive letter to independent film director Henry Jaglom. That early morning, bleary-eyed and sapped, she went to her waitressing gig, unaware that her efforts would spark a six-film-and-counting collaboration with the auteur. The partnership began with Hollywood Dreams—which earned Frederick, the relative newcomer, unprecedented above-title billing—and has continued with the recently wrapped The M Word. With all her toiling and trailblazing within the realm of independent cinema, Frederick could just as easily feel privileged, but, instead, she is as down to earth and motivated as ever. Rather than rest on her film accolades, Frederick has added to her reputation as an accomplished stage performer in plays like The Rainmaker and Why We Have a Body, the latter of which she also directed. Cumulatively, the stories she has told have always been of the worthwhile kind, underscored by messages of hope and redemption. An ardent surfer in her downtime (in addition to being a marathon runner and martial artist), the same optimism is reflected in her humanitarian work to preserve the ocean's beauty with Project Save Our Surf, a nonprofit organization she co-founded, and in giving back to her home state of Iowa by creating local jobs with film productions like Garner Iowa. An average denizen would feel weighed down with so many projects being piled on so high, but the responsibilities lift Frederick up, light as a feather, enabling her to sleep with the greatest of ease. Ironically, it's trivial concerns, like what to have for breakfast, that worry her the most.

Anti-Aging And Longevity Breakthroughs WHAT ARE THE LATEST MIND, BODY, SPIRIT PHILOSOPHIES, TECHNOLOGIES AND MEDICAL ADVANCES IN THE FIELD OF ANTI-AGING? AS THE DEMAND STEADILY INCREASES, HOW EDUCATED IS THE PUBLIC?

I38I WESTLAKE MAGAZINE • JAN.FEB2014

External and internal methods that will help one “age gracefully” are the focus of our society and each day we inch closer to finding the fountain of youth. Medical researchers release new discoveries, advances and hope in the field of anti-aging and longevity medicine everyday. The interest continues to grow at a rapid pace. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could stop the clock? The old aging clock that is. As our generation is inundated with conflicting reports on the latest anti-aging techniques, a new web series entitled “Stop The Clock! cuts through the confusion with straight talk, verifiable facts and results by providing information on revolutionary advances in anti-aging, longevity, beauty, cosmetic medicine and overall wellness at: www.stoptheclock.tv. Industry experts release new discoveries on a daily basis creating a need for a reliable segment series to lead us through the war on aging. As many as 80% of Americans over the age of sixty suffer from one age-related disease, such as cancer, heart disease, arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease. There are Anti-Aging clinics, Longevity Institutes and Wellness Centers popping up all over the country! … What do they do? Some make claims to be able to reduce or alleviate pre-disposed genetic risk factors by using a combination of nutrients, anti-oxidants, medicine, physical therapy, pain management and even stem cell therapy. One American based institute stipulates premature aging to be considered a nutritional deficiency syndrome. Their objective is to create precursors in the biochemical pathways of hormone production, transport and reception that are lacking in the standard American diet. The latest cardiovascular exercise crazes; gyrotonics, pilate machines, anti-gravity yoga, weight management, senior strength training and new optional surgeries for obesity including cosmetic weight-loss are readily available to anyone who is committed to exploring a healthy lifestyle. Human Growth Hormones, hormone replacement or augmentation (melatonin, dehydrepiandrosterone, DHEA, and others) are controversial, however, administration of hormonal precursors is less so. The reason behind this is that growth hormone levels drop with age and the logic has been to restore the patient's levels to that a 20-30 year old. The treatment of breast cancer and menopause are topics that have grown tremendously among women. Phytohormones are essential compounds that modulate steroid hormone metabolism. These compounds may offer more benefit than ERT (estrogen replacement therapy or

Biochemical and Chromosomal therapies, such as the reversal of apoptosis, or programmed cell death has introduced telomerase activation. Chromosomal manipulation is truly at the frontier of antiaging. It sounds very scientific but once you wrap your head around it, it makes perfect sense. Additionally, new therapeutic interventions for anxiety, depression, stress and the role of cortisol in premature aging. The electronic information processing technologies have sparked a revolution in the conceptual modeling of neurodevelopment. Right here in Thousand Oaks, NeuroTopia Central Coast is performing brain mapping and brain-training that will offer life-changing results in areas ranging from athletic training and pain management to addiction problems, depression, children with autism and much more. Furthermore, new cosmetic procedures, power peels, anti-aging radio-frequency treatments, Smart Skin lasers, stem cell skin extracts, retinol treatments, glycolic and fruit acids, vitamin serums and many more… are all used for the reversal of UVA and UVB skin damage.

The list goes on and on when it comes to ways to maintain a healthy, youthful and vibrant presence … and the Stop The Clock! Web series will take us on a journey that will inform, enlighten and educate the public in the area of anti-aging, longevity and overall health and wellness.

O

ne of the most fascinating and renown wellness centers in the world is The Clinique La Prairie, located in Switzerland overlooking Lake Geneva. The clinic offers a number of extraordinary programs, however, the one that caught our eye was the infamous Revitalization Program. For a period of one week, and throughout the Revitalization Program, the patient is very closely monitored medically. The first two days after arrival on a Sunday are dedicated to a complete medical checkup, to providing detailed information on the services and treatments offered by Clinique La Prairie, and to prepare each person with an individual program. If no contraindications are identified, they will be provided Revitalization “treatments” from Tuesday to Thursday, with medical supervision extending at least until Friday. So what is this Revitalization Program and how was it developed? The Clinique La Prairie maintains it’s own laboratory, scientist and patent on the technology. The doctors and individuals operating this astonishing center maintain what they feel is a life-changing program using specific properties extracted from black sheep stem cells. The clinic has been providing these groundbreaking treatments for decades to high-profile individuals from around the world. The treatments have shown to help trigger the bodies own production of new white blood cells to aid in fighting off disease and boost the immune system. The recently remodeled campus sits overlooking a magnificent lake and snowcapped mountains. The facility consist of a hospital with over sixty physicians on call, a spa that rivals any in the world and a restaurant with a premier chef and exquisite menu focused on weight management while taking complete pleasure in food … and this feature alone is worth the trip. MELISSA RAVO / JAIME BOREANAZ

MELISSA RAVO AND JAIME BOREANAZ LAUNCH

CHROME GIRL NAILPOLISHLINE

DEVOTED WIVES AND MOTHERS WITH DREAMS OF BECOMING BUSINESSWOMEN, MELISSA RAVO AND JAIME BOREANAZ, WERE SOMEHOW DESTINED TO MEET AT THEIR COMMUNITY SUMMER BARBEQUE. THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THEM INSTANTLY SPARKED INTO A TRUE FRIENDSHIP, WITH THEIR HUSBANDS AND CHILDREN BEFRIENDING ONE ANOTHER AS WELL.

“MELISSA AND I THRIVE ON QUALITY AND DETAIL, SO THE COLOR YOU SEE IN THE BOTTLE IS WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO GET ON YOUR NAIL.” The idea of creating a nail polish line originated when Ravo and Boreanaz found their daughters experimenting with nail polish one afternoon. This encouraged them to look into the ingredients found in nail polish, which led them to see the many toxic and cancer-causing components of a commonplace product found in almost every household and used by practically every woman. “We decided in that moment that we wanted to put out a line of polish that was not only safe for our daughters but also for all other women” explained Ravo. Also of primary importance, the duo wants their line to project a sense of strength, confidence, power and independence for all those who wear it, and so they decided on the name “Chrome.” This not only suits any color but also conveys the image of strength that Ravo and Boreanaz desire for their brand. After over a year of planning the perfect bottle shape and the ideal name for each color, Chrome Girl launched February 2013. “We didn't just throw our name on cool colors and call it a day. We made sure the packaging was modern and sleek,” Boreanaz explained. “Melissa and I thrive on quality and detail, so the color you see in the bottle is

what you are going to get on your nail with one to two coats.” The line began with 18 colors that are simple, classy, playful and a bit edgy. The pair wanted to ensure that there was a color suitable for every type of woman. With color names such as “Endless Summer,” “Shmexy,” “Love Note” and “Pucker Up” it is hard to miss these creative and fun nail polishes among the numerous other brands. Furthermore, Ravo and Boreanaz take immense pride in the fact that Chrome Girl Nail Polish is a five free line. This means that there is no formaldehyde, resin, toluene, camphor, or dibutyl phthalate found in the formulations, making Chrome Girl a safer and healthier nail polish option. On the day of their launch in Planet Beauty in Calabasas, the pair sold over 150 bottles of nail polish in two hours. After that day, they quickly expanded their line to almost half of the Planet Beauty stores in Los Angeles and Chrome Girl can also be found in Fred Segal New Beauty, Pro Beauty and Popular. Ravo and Boreanaz have been able to successfully expand their customer base, and their line is now being sold in high-end spas in New York and in specialty boutiques in Texas. Addition-

I41I WESTLAKE MAGAZINE • JAN.FEB2014

ally, the two have a celebrity following and have been featured in beauty publications such as People, InStyle and Cosmopolitan. One of the proudest moments for Ravo and Boreanaz was when Jennifer Hudson wore their “Hard to Get” color to the 2013 Oscar Awards. Additionally, the duo has recently launched their NHL line and created true pantone colors for selected hockey teams such as “Can’t Check This” and “Just Add Ice.” Ravo and Boreanaz have been through thick and thin together and each knows she can rely on the other. “Being in business with Jaime makes the challenges easier to get through because she understands me, has respect for me as a mother and can relate to the same issues I go through,” said Ravo. As big cosmetic and beauty buffs themselves, knowing that they were able to successfully create their own unique nail polish line has been the most rewarding part of the entire process. In the coming year, they hope to continue expanding their nail polish line by introducing six new colors each season and, hopefully, in the next 10 years add lip stick, eye liner and other cosmetic products to the Chrome Girl name.

tionally, to stick with a strategy. For example, during any given year the financial markets could be down, and your results might be disappointing. Nonetheless, if you have built a diversified portfolio containing quality investments, and your portfolio is well suited to your own risk tolerance and time horizon, you don’t necessarily need to make changes following a down year in the markets. • What aspects of my life have changed in the past year? Your investment strategy should be based entirely on your individual needs and circumstances — so if these have changed during the past year, you may also have to adjust the way you invest. Consider any and all changes in your life — marriage, new children, divorce, remarriage, new job, new home, etc. — and then try to determine what impact these changes might have on your long-term financial strategy and if you need to adjust that strategy in response.

TIME TO CHECK YOUR PROGRESS TOWARD YOUR RETIREMENT GOALS BY TOM YOON

N

OW THAT ANOTHER YEAR IS STARTING, IT’S A GOOD TIME TO TAKE STOCK OF WHERE YOU ARE ON YOUR JOURNEY TOWARD FINANCIAL SECURITY. Of course, you could find many different “measuring sticks” to assess your progress, but you can certainly gain considerable information just by asking yourself some basic questions. HERE ARE A FEW TO CONSIDER: • How close am I to my retirement goals? Your comprehensive investment strategy should include a reasonably good estimate of how much money you will eventually need to sustain the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. At least once a year, you should evaluate how much closer you’ve gotten to your goals than the year before.

• Am I making sufficient progress toward my goals? When assessing your progress, try to determine if your portfolio is properly allocated between stocks, stock-based vehicles, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit and other investments. If you're “overweighted” in a particular asset class, such as cash, you may be impeding your ability to move toward your goals. • Am I adhering to my investment strategy? To stick with your investment strategy, you need to invest at regular intervals and meet regularly with your financial professional to review your progress and make adjustments — such as rebalancing your portfolio — when necessary. Of course, even with regular progress reviews and portfolio rebalancing, it can be challenging, psychologically and emo-

I42I WESTLAKE MAGAZINE • JAN.FEB2014

• Have I changed my thinking on my retirement goals? Over time, you might undergo some changes in your thinking about retirement. For example, perhaps you’ve decided that you no longer want to retire early and travel the world; instead, you’ve discovered a growing desire to open a small business or do some consulting. Any significant changes you make to your retirement plans will likely have a big effect on your savings and investment strategies, so you’ll want to incorporate these changes into your planning as soon as possible. By asking, and answering, these questions at the start of each year, you should always have a good sense of where you are in pursuit of your long-term goals — and what you need to do to bring the realization of those goals closer to reality.

CRYOSTEM SKIN THERAPY SYSTEM The DNA CryoStem Skin Therapy System™ is the new gold standard in skin care therapy. For the first time in the history of skin care, there is a complete answer to aging skin. As a result of many years in the field of embryonic stem cell research as it applies to healthy aging, esthetics and genetics, DNA Health Institute made a breakthrough discovery that broke the code for achieving healthy skin regeneration and younger looking skin through a proprietary method of cryogenically preserving fresh and active biological embryonic serums, rich in vital nutrients and skin stem cells (extracted from a controlled bovine source). This biotech skin rejuvenation system is unrivaled for its ability to rapidly transform and rejuvenate the skin of the face and body by providing the key constituents to correct, rebuild, nourish, influence, and preserve the skin. The DNA CryoStem™ skin care formulations consist of pure, natural, chemical-free, and preservative free ingredients. However, at the DNA Health Institute, having freshness and purity of the ingredients is only the first step. DNA Health Institute selects ingredients that have a natural attraction/affinity to each other based on the principles of ionic chemistry. This is the key to gaining the dynamic therapeutic value and full healing potential of each ingredient within a formulation. Great care is taken not to introduce ingredients that would create a repulsion (repelling or pulling away activity) that would render one or more of the ingredients in the formulation inactive or cause the ingredients to diminish or lose their vital life-force. The DNA cryogenic products were evaluated and tested for consumer safety and welfare by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) with final review and clearance for marketing and distribution issued in 2000. An in-vitro study submitted to the FDA proved a 71% increase in cell (skin) growth after application of the DNA CryoStem Biological Cellular™ serums. The cell regeneration benefits continued post-treatment and peaked at 144 hours/6 days after application.

THE NEW YOU’S RESOLUTIONS BY LISA WALDREP, CPC

Lisa Waldrep BETTER LIFE EDITOR

T

IS THE SEASON FOR RESOLUTIONS. LOVE THEM, HATE THEM, IGNORE THEM, OR BREAK THEM… EVERYONE THINKS ABOUT THEM. The idea of a brand “new” year with the opportunity to be a new and improved version of us is invigorating for the soul. The funny thing about resolutions, and probably reflects some common human foible, is that they are often associated with an onus to get rid of something, with the underlying message that we are doing something wrong. Resolutions can be a positive expression of who we are and where we want to be instead of what we shouldn’t be doing and how we disappoint ourselves! Instead of a resolution feeling like a tracking bracelet, resolutions should be less about what you have to be giving up and cutting out and more about what you want to be bringing in and singing out. I love Westlake Village. I always said that the sun shines a little warmer here. People always look at me a little funny when I say that until they spend some time in our community. The hills, lakes, sunsets, space, and mostly its people create an atmosphere of repose. It is a perfect setting for achieving success in resolutions.

The ideas of resolutions can be more than just fanciful wishes. They can be the actual empowering step to living the way you really want to live. Just make sure you are being honest with yourself, in other words, be careful for what you wish for … as you may just get it. That may sound obvious, but I remind many of my clients that for the most part, when they are complaining about the many “wrong” things in their lives: we all live the lives we want to live! So resolutions are a kind of social ritual that gives us a clean slate for our own wish list, the gifts we give ourselves to live a more joyful, happier, and better year. Amazingly, there is science to describe how we respond to the idea of resolutions and – thank goodness – this same science provides tips for success. First, don’t overload yourself with resolutions. The inability to keep a resolution is less about not being “a good person”, but more about taking on too much, too fast. Remember, you have a year to hit your goals, so eat that elephant one bite at a time (unless weight loss is your goal!). Another thing science has taught us is to distract ourselves. This may seem confusing that we should distract ourselves from our goal, but the mind works better when relaxed and not obsessed with one theme. Instead of thinking about what you shouldn’t be doing, think about something positive you can do. Also, these studies show us that we do better when we have energy; so don’t starve yourself to achieve your weight loss goals and know that more exercise will empower your goal to exercise more. Best wishes for your new New Year!

2014 “ON NOVEMBER 24, FANS IN THE STANDS HELD ITS FIRST EVENT, A TENNIS FUNDRAISER AT NORTH RANCH COUNTRY CLUB, FEATURING TENNIS STARS, SAM QUERRY AND ANDREA JAEGER.”

FANSIN THE STANDSFOUNDATION

A LOCALMAN FIGHTS FOR KIDS BY BAILEE AHERN

IF GIVEN THE DIAGNOSIS OF STAGE 4 ESOPHAGEAL CANCER, IT IS HARD TO IMAGINE THAT MANY WOULD RESPOND IN THE WAY KEVIN FEINBLOOM, A THOUSAND OAKS RESIDENT AND FATHER OF TWO, HAS. SINCE RECEIVING THIS LIFE-CHANGING NEWS ONLY 3 MONTHS AGO, FEINBLOOM HAS CREATED HIS OWN FOUNDATION, FANS IN THE STANDS, AND RAISED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR CHILDREN AND INSPIRED COUNTLESS MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY. Kevin’s journey through sickness, and his fight to provide kids the chance to be healthy again through sports, appears to be something of a whirlwind. On November 4, Feinbloom became a 2013 Mike Nosco Memorial Bicycle Ride recipient—an “incredible” and “humbling” moment. On November 24, Fans in the Stands held its first event, a tennis fundraiser at North Ranch Country Club, featuring tennis stars, Sam Querry and Andrea Jaeger. The money raised from this event went to Andrea Jaeger’s Little Star Foundation, which provides various scholarships and services to sick children in Ventura County. With over $80,000 raised and 350 people in attendance at the tennis event, Feinbloom hopes to continue this success with “two crazy goals”: first, make the tennis fundraiser an annual event and second, organize a summer basketball fundraiser, including well-known professional basketball players. When asked why he began the Fans in the Stands Foundation and works so hard for others despite his own illness, Feinbloom responded, “I simply want kids suffering from sickness to have the opportunity to feel that same joy that I and my children experienced playing sports growing up.”

DEARCANCER BY JYNARRA BRINSON

THE THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF WRITING HAS YET TO BE CONTESTED; AND SO THE CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY OF THE VALLEY, VENTURA AND SANTA BARBARA IS HOLDING THEIR 2ND ANNUAL "DEAR CANCER, IT'S ME..." CONTEST. THE CONTEST IS EXACTLY WHAT THE TITLE TELLS YOU: STUDENTS IN HIGH SCHOOL - GRADES 9TH THROUGH 12TH - HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WRITE TO CANCER, TO POUR THEIR HEARTS OUT ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES, EITHER AS PATIENTS THEMSELVES OR AS LOVED ONES TO THOSE SUFFERING FROM CANCER. “Last year, we had no idea what type of response we would get from the 100 high schools in our jurisdiction of Van Nuys to Santa Maria,” said Karen Eckhardt, Vice President of Communications & Development for the Cancer Support Community of the Valley. “Seventy four students from twenty eight schools participated,” she explained. The turnout was both impressive and encouraging, prompting the organization to open the contest to photography as a medium of expression. In the forthcoming years, they plan to include poetry, music and original artwork categories. The Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara provides psychological and social support to children, teens and adults with cancer, their families and their friends. Last years’ winning essays evoked compassion and resilience, and displayed the effect of community support, and the overall capacity of the human spirit. “We open the door to hope,” Eckhardt said. “Our vision is that no one should face cancer alone." For more information on how to enter the contest, visit cancersupportvvsb.org.

Essential Oils BY CHARLY EMERY

If you’re looking for simple ways to recharge, de-stress and detox, Essential Oils may be a fantastic solution to boosting your health and wellness all year round. As a personal strategist who specializes in helping people make positive shifts, I was excited to learn that these extraordinary oils are used to successfully combat stress, ease pain, promote weight loss, regulate hormones and more. Often called the lifeblood of the plant, Essential Oils are the liquids distilled from the roots, stems, leaves, flowers and bark or resin of plants. Administered easily, they can be applied directly to the skin, diffused into the air or inhaled. Some can also be ingested. Do you suffer from problems with sleep? Holly Correa, MA, a certified Gyrotonic/Pilates instructor, recommends rubbing 1-2 drops of Lavender oil onto the bottoms of your feet for quick absorption into the bloodstream. Diffusing Eucalyptus oil can help alleviate your cold symptoms. Clove and Cinnamon are both excellent immunity boosters and just 1-2 drops of lemon oil in your water will help you detox. Holly says the key to success is buying a pure therapeutic grade form without any synthetics or fillers. She also warns against heating the oils since doing so will break down the molecular structure and compromise their effectiveness. You can explore the magic of these Essential Oils and uncover the various ways they can boost your personal wellness at www.tracy.vibrantscents.com.

What’s happening here? Is anything today left unsaid? I forgot what those things are, because EVERYTHING is talked about today. EVERYTHING! To hell with appropriate. It’s SO yesterday. If you poop it’s okay to talk about it. Why not? Everybody does it. And, of course, the louder you burp, the bigger the laughs. Any sound that’s emitted from the body is more than okay to broadcast, particularly on stage. One comedienne recently spoke of her vaginal examination, her yeast infection and shaving her crotch. The audience roared. A lady, she wasn’t. And maybe I wasn’t the only female who felt some embarrassment. I remember the first time I saw Michael Jackson grab his crotch. Surely he didn’t do that. He couldn’t have. But I was wrong. He repeated it several times. He originated the trend…it caught on. Every rapper started grabbing his crotch….. No big deal, just routine. The shock value is gone. Hey, what about this? You’re having dinner with friends and suddenly one of the guests belched so loudly that it sounded like he made a melody of it. No apology was given, just the lame explanation that in some countries belching is a compliment to good food. Everyone fell apart with laughter…except me. After gaining attention, he was now ready for his encore. He demonstrated how well he can belch at will. And what a surprise, others at the table opted not to be left out, so they join in the belching contest. Funniest thing they’ve ever heard. Naturally, this led to the next topic…bathroom jokes. WE ARE AT A DINNER TABLE HERE! Does anyone care? I have no clue why bodily sounds are so hysterical. I guess it doesn’t matter, they just are. And the worst part is, the more I don’t laugh, the more people think I’m the epitome “buzz kill.” FYI…I am not a buzz kill. I have an excellent sense of humor. I love to laugh. I love good jokes, even dirty jokes. Just not belching, toilet jokes or “blowing chunks.” (Double Yuck!)

“AND MAYBE I WASN’T THE ONLY FEMALE WHO FELT SOME EMBARRASSMENT.”

WHEN DID “GROSS” BECOME FUNNY? BY SANDY FRANCIS

A

M I SUPPOSED TO LAUGH WHEN I WATCH A COMEDIAN WHO DECIDES IT’S A GREAT GUFFAW TO DESCRIBE “BLOWING CHUNKS”? (classy new term for vomit) Should I join the rest of the audience, who are hysterical, as he graphically describes the corn kernels that were the first thing that flew out of his mouth while his head was in the toilet? I ask myself if I’m really entertained by this. Maybe I’m over reacting, or is “RAUNCHY” gaining in popularity? I don’t mean dark humor, I mean RAUNCHY. Not only do I not appreciate this type of humor, but I don’t understand why anyone does. I watched an audience at the Comedy Store, double over in laughter when a comedian graphically described the consistency and the frequency of his diarrhea. Excuse the expression…his audience ate it up. And, of course, he relished talking of his problem with gas, and then began mimicking flatulence. One woman laughed so hard, she spat the drink from her mouth…..as well as whatever other munchies she was eating. This, of course, incited more laughter from friends at her table. Yuk!

“ WE WANT PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT NATURE DOESN’T NEED PEOPLE. PEOPLE NEED NATURE.”

W

hen Harrison Ford signed his first seven year contract with Columbia Pictures (back in the day when there was such a thing) it was for $150 a week. Looking back, he told Success Magazine, that he regrets having undersold himself, not just because it was financially unprofitable, but because it erroneously conveyed that he did not believe enough in his talents. On a recent Conan O’Brien show, he told the story about those early days with Columbia, which didn’t last too long, and his first (uncredited) role in a 1966 movie called Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round as a bell boy in a hotel, delivering a note or telegram to James Coburn. “My lines were, 'Paging Mr Jones, Mr Jones, paging Mr Jones,' and he raised his hand and I went over and said, 'Mr Jones? Room 204?' and he said, 'Yes' and I gave him the note and that was my job,” he told O’Brien.” He went on to tell the talk show host what happened when the head of the new talent program called him into his office after he had watched the rushes. “He said, 'Sit down kid, I saw the rushes from yesterday, You’re never going to make it in the business. Just forget about it. The first movie Tony Curtis was ever in he delivered a bag of groceries. You took one look at that guy and you said that's a movie star.' And I leaned across his desk and said, 'I thought you were supposed to think that was a grocery delivery boy.' He said, 'Get out of my office,' which I was happy to do. I didn't last much longer with them.” He went on to tell O’Brien how 15 years later he was in a studio commissary when a waiter delivered a business card to him on a little silver tray. On the back of the card it said, “I missed my bet” and it bore the name of that same guy who told him he’d never make it.

I

t had to be a hard pill to swallow for that man to see Ford become Han Solo and Indiana Jones, but it wasn’t

overnight. There were a series of one-shots and a lot of gigs as a carpenter until Ford finally won the role as the teenage hot-rodder in George Lucas’ 1973 film American Graffiti. Four years later, the director cast him in Star Wars and it was the beginning of super-stardom for the Chicago-born, college drop-out, and there was no turning back or slowing down. In 2013, Ford was in four films: Paranoia, Ender’s Game, Anchorman 2, The Legend Continues, and 42. In 42, in which he underwent an extreme physical transformation as Brooklyn Dodger manager Branch Rickey, who changed the face of baseball when he brought Jackie Robinson onto the team, Ford told Michigan Avenue Magazine: “I felt emotionally connected to Branch Rickey’s ideas, to his history, to the way he expressed himself, and to the quality of his relationship to Jackie Robinson. There were complicated motivations that led him to bring Jackie Robinson into major league baseball, and I thought the film addressed those in a way that I wanted to honor. When I read the script, I thought it was a well-wrought story about something significant, a character different than any I’d played before.” He’s currently wrapped Expendables 3 and in current talks for Indiana Jones 5 and, according to www.aceshowbiz.com, Ford finally spoke about much anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII at an event in Chicago on WGN, saying, "I think it's almost true. I'm looking forward to it. It's not in the bag yet, but I think it's happening."

A

t 71, Ford seems to define the word content. In 2010, Ford . . . father of four grown children from two failed marriages . . . and Calista Flockhart, 22 years his junior, tied the knot. They began dating after they met at the 2002 Golden Globe Awards and very soon after, it was reported that Ford was helping to raise her adopted son Liam.

I52I WESTLAKE MAGAZINE • JAN.FEB2014

When asked why so long after all the time they had been together, Ford told AARP Magazine: "Because we'd lived together for 10 years and it seemed like we were going to get along. And I love her and she wanted to get married, and I wanted to get married." He became a pilot in 1995 and owns several aircraft. It has not only given him additional privacy from paparazzi, but with a home in Jackson, Wyoming, Ford has become a member of Wyoming’s Teton County Search and Rescue group and has rescued people lost in the area’s mountains and trails.

B

ecoming a landowner in Jackson, lead him to another passion as well -- the environment and its conservation, and he has become a spokesperson for Conservation International. “We want people to understand that nature doesn’t need people. People need nature. The human population could disappear completely, and nature would prosper and heal,” he told Michigan Avenue Magazine. “But we need intact and vital nature in order to support ourselves. We cannot afford to provide for ourselves through our effort and financial means. All the free services our environment provides help us. Nature provides for humanity: fresh air, clean water, pollinators for our crops, renewable sources of food, and sources of future medicinals. We need to closet and preserve these resources.” All the while he remains a vital actor. He told AARP Magazine in 2011 that he loves the process of acting; the problemsolving with people on a story. "I love acting probably more than I did before," he said.

STAYING HEALTHY AFTER 50 WHY IT'S HARDER FOR WOMEN AND HOW TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD

This doesn't happen in men. Men's testosterone levels decline by about 1% every year starting at the age of 30, and as they get older men gradually feel the effect. But women lose almost 100% of their estrogen and progesterone, rather abruptly, in a matter of a few years! Some of the most common problems caused by menopause are depression, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, fatigue, low motivation, weight gain, hot flashes, night sweats, heart palpitations, brain fog, dry eyes, vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, loss of sex drive, urinary leakage, accelerated skin wrinkling, accelerated bone loss, and an increased risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and dementia. In two words: accelerated aging. Not to mention the toll on a woman's personal and professional life. These short and long-term consequences of menopause occur because estrogen and progesterone are needed for more than just having sex and making babies. There are estrogen and progesterone receptors present in all the cells of a woman's body: her brain, heart, skin, vagina, etc. These estrogen and progesterone receptors receive estrogen and progesterone like a lock receives a key, and contribute to the cells' normal functioning. Without estrogen and progesterone, life after menopause continues, but a woman's body is no longer bathed in the hormones which make her who she is and allow her body and mind to function optimally. As a doctor, this realization hit me hard: Every menopausal woman, whether she has hot flashes or not, suffers from severe and permanent estrogen and progesterone deficiencies for the rest of her life unless she takes action to level the playing field. For my patients, this means doing what is common medical practice for all other severe hormone deficiencies: replace the missing hormones. More specifically, using bioidentical estrogen and cyclic progesterone which fit by a lock-and-key mechanism, mimic a woman's natural physiology and restore health and happiness.

“...WOMEN LOSE ALMOST 100% OF THEIR ESTROGEN AND PROGESTERONE, RATHER ABRUPTLY, IN A MATTER OF A FEW YEARS!”

A

S A YOUNG MEDICAL STUDENT, I USED TO LOOK FORWARD TO MENOPAUSE. I couldn't wait for the day when my monthly cycles would end and real freedom, on multiple levels, would finally begin. Then, during my training in integrative medicine, I learned what menopause really means and my heart sank for my mother, my patients, and myself. Most women know that menopause is that phase of life when a woman's ovaries have completely run out of eggs, and usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. It signifies that they no longer have to worry about monthly cycles or getting pregnant. But this is where common knowledge generally ends. What most people (including most doctors) don't realize is that menopause also causes a woman to nearly completely . . . and absolutely permanently . . . cease to produce two of her most potent hormones: estradiol (estrogen) and progesterone. It is the eggs themselves which actually produce women's estrogen and progesterone. Once the eggs are gone, so are the hormones they produce.

my cozy little annual practice of parading about year after year looking for that perfect role but accepting whatever came. "I don’t want to do this any more" meant I want creative and financial freedom not just a 15 hour a day gig that’ll pay the bills for the comfortable little life I lead. And it meant expressing myself as the woman I’d become rather than the girl I used to be. After 30 years of pilot season, over 20 TV series contracts and 4 hit TV shows, admitting that "I don't want to do this anymore" was much more daunting than the prospect of another pilot season. But "I don’t want to do this anymore" was out and I couldn’t put it back in. I could have saved myself a lot of trouble had my New Years resolution been to stay in town for pilot season…again. What with people’s New Year’s resolution anyway? To lose weight, quit smoking, pay down that credit card, whatever. Why do we create them every year? Are we truly committed to our own evolution or just the annual process, which pacifies us into a sense of forward momentum? Are we really committing ourselves to change or are we in fact living the status quo by participating in this ritual every year without the willingness to deeply examine our true desires? Because like I said, once you speak that desire, once it’s out, there is no going back. I'm saying it’s easier to create these little resolutions and fail, than to face our true desires because yesterday's failures are over. But today's desires…an open book with pages and pages yet to be written upon. Desire, true deep driving desire is a world of infinite possibility. Do we have the courage to let go of what worked for us in the past in order to receive that which will serve us better today? Do we have the strength to release who we are in order to become who we are meant to be? This is fearless evolution. This is the New Year’s resolution I'm talkin’ about. Much like the ocean, life ebbs and flows. It never stands still. But it passes through moments of perfection, moments when the tide is just right for that wave to break and peel along the shore giving you the ride of your life. In between those moments, we paddle out. We search. We wait for the right tide, the right wind, and the right wave. Somewhere out there exists what is right for me. At this time in my life, at this phase of my own personal evolution, it’s out there. I may not know with certainty what it is, but I know absolutely what it is not. That’s both electrifyingly stimulating and completely paralyzing. There in Cabo I stood, feet in the sand, board under my arm, realization of "I don’t want to do this anymore” rolling around on my tongue. Looking out at those waves, I knew I wanted them. I didn’t really know what they'd bring, one never knows for certain when it comes to the ocean, but I knew I wanted to be riding them. And I knew if I was to ride that wave, my wave, I was going to have to paddle out. And so I did. And so I must. Here’s to all you gals turning 50 and the only New Years resolution you will ever need: Embrace it!

CHRISTA FOLEY Celebrity Make-up Artist & Stylist / Mother/ Winemaker

O

ne of the most exciting times in my life was turning fifty this past February. It was filled with joy, laughter, family,

friends, and of course celebration! My husband threw me an incredible party and the celebration went on for weeks. I feel like turning fifty was one of the best times of my life, thus far. . It was a truly a celebration of the first half of my life with everyone I loved! I am so bless with being married to a great man who is an extraordinary husband. I am most grateful for him. Our lives have been blessed with two daughters who really do bring a smile to my face every day. I never underestimate the gift that God has blessed me with in my incredibly sweet family and the happiness it brings to my life”.

totally okay with my body. Body image is such an issue for all of us! Young teens and women alike. Being in the fashion industry for twenty- eight years, I have heard an ear-full of how models think they are fat. It always comes up! Sadly, I would say eighty percent truly believe this and I just try to comfort them as they sit in my make-up chair. But since I have been working as a make-up artist for so long, I realize my words just go in one ear and right out the other. Body image is a deep-rooted dilemma and I doubt that my reassuring words help at all. At this time, I am the mother of two teenage girls; I reiterate my theory on body image, as needed. I have taught my girls to be happy with the body God gave them and just simply take care of it! I teach them to eat right, exercise, don’t smoke and wear sunscreen! It doesn’t have to be crazy … it’s really quite simple.

Shortly after the party was over, I realized that the subject of me turning fifty seemed to be popping up all of the time! It was then when I really noticed that there is a great deal of fear associated with getting older. I wouldn’t be the first to say, that it is probably the geography of where we live close to Los Angeles. People in the entertainment industry do not like to age, however, its not just LA, it’s really everywhere! While I am very proud of my German heritage growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio ... Americans are known for looking for the fast track to everything, including youth. That said, being on the fast track happens to be one of our Country’s most admirable traits but when instant gratification is the goal in maintaining youth … it gets ugly. I really feel it is too easy these days to drive through a fast food drive-thru! I can’t get over so many people prematurely opting for gastric bypass surgery or taking diet pills versus eating healthier and exercising a little bit. The same is true with liposuction; it is so much faster to surgically have it taken off. The list goes on and on. Immediate gratification is simply too available these days.

The secret is to keep moving. Like they say, “if you don’t move it you’ll lose it!”

I, personally, have never been skinny. But thankfully at fifty I am finally at a place in my life where I am

Another secret to looking and feeling younger is to try to be the happiest person you know!

Growing up in the Midwest, I was a little chubby when I was young. I chose to get in shape when I was in my teens. I started running and became a vegetarian for years! I liked the results and its’ been easy to maintain …until late forties! Ugh. Now, I really have to be careful with what I eat and I must exercise because it is challenging to lose the extra pounds I may gain. I still stick to a diet that is really basic and very clean. I don’t eat processed foods and I stay away from gluten and sugar. Regarding exercising I hike three to five times a week. If I am not hiking I am doing weights.

Have fun with your friends and don’t forget to have fun with your significant other! I deeply believe this. I know stress ages people and laughter melts the stress! I have been married for almost twenty years and the secret to our relationship is that we really do still have fun together! While writing this article, I figured out why turning fifty is not a big deal for me. I have had the fortunate luck to observe some of the women in my family age very gracefully into their eighties and nineties! When you put that into perspective, I am only a little more than halfway there! Yay! My own grandmother is ninety-four and remarried the love of her life at the young age of seventy! After getting married, they immersed themselves into just enjoying life. They bought a motor home and have traveled everywhere. They are strong, emotionally engaged and honestly the sweetest couple. Another amazing role model is my motherin-law. Chris will be eighty in February and she is still winning golf tournaments and runs circles around me! These role models of mine have some interesting things in common. I occasionally ask them what their secret is? The first thing my grandmother says is that she doesn’t have time to get old! Love her! They believe in staying really active. They understand that eating really clean food, plenty of rest, regular exercise, having faith, golfing and having hobbies are the key. I aim to stick to these guidelines-because I have seen the results of their healthy living! Lastly, I have chosen to embrace my age whether fifty or eighty. As long as I have love, laughter, my family and all of my awesome friends I will remain happy!

Staying connected to your passions, being grateful and creating laughter whenever possible is the next best thing to finding the fountain of youth. I believe (and studies indicate) that maintaining a content and youthful heart clearly alters our biochemistry and slows the aging process. I love being a Mom (I learn everyday from my children), a wife, volunteer and an entrepreneur. I also cherish downtime to enjoy family, good friends and the beauty that surrounds us. Now, all of that said, maintaining a vibrant and healthy appearance (inside and out) goes hand in hand with a flurry of other important regimes. Considering that we can’t stop the chronological course of aging cells, the shortening of telomeres and the natural progression that occurs over-time, acceptance is important, however, prevention can be promising. I am fully onboard with aging gracefully, however, being pro-active to ease the process … is perfectly acceptable (wink.) So what does all this boil down to? Each of our bodies, just as our personalities, are dynamically unique and may require a concierge approach by seeking out a quality physician that tunes in to who you are individually, physically, hormonally and psychologically. We know our bodies best and a good doctor will acknowledge, respect and listen to your concerns. The following falls under preventative maintenance and are the no-brainers.

I

have always maintained a fervent viewpoint on aging and it may or may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but … here it is plain and simple. If you only did ONE thing to-

ward maintaining a healthy and youthful presence, make it your mission to find as many joyous moments in your life each and every day.

• Nutrition. - Following a diet that fits your needs and supports good health is vitally important. There are a variety of foods rich with properties that fight free radicals. Additionally, exploring various supplements that your body may need can also support overall wellness. It is true that you are what you eat. However, on the other hand, if someone said to me, cut out the meat and it may add a few years to your lifespan (or live to be 96 instead of 94)… I would go for the pleasure of eating my steak … and go out at 94 with a smile on my face!!! It came with the territory growing up in Texas and it is one of my moments of “joy”, however, remember that “moderation” is always KEY. • Avoid Smoking whenever possible. It takes its toll internally and externally. • Avoid too much sun-exposure. Sunscreen products can be tricky so look for products that provide both skin protection and nourishment. • Moderate caffeine and alcohol intake … again too much of anything is generally not healthy. • Reduce Stress – probably the most challenging of all these factors is managing stress, however, the next bullet point may help greatly.

I60I WESTLAKE MAGAZINE • JAN.FEB2014

• Exercise and keep fit. Listen to your body and identify the best routine that will help burn calories, support a healthy cardio-vascular system and avoid too much wear and tear on the joints and tendons. And good posture becomes increasingly important as we age (Dr. Spagnoli’s posture program rocks.) Ten years ago, I was fortunate enough to be a guest on a few talk shows, as well as, on ABC7 Eyewitness morning news with comrade Ellen Leyva. We addressed the ever-popular topic of anti-aging and longevity in a segment entitled “Stop The Clock.” Today, I am working to resurrect the show considering it remains a hot topic among baby-boomers, Gen-Xer’s and most anyone that wants to live a long healthy life. Most of my great Aunts chewed tobacco, smoked like chimneys, drank moonshine, carried shotguns and ate fried everything… and lived into their 90’s and some to 100. I have always been intrigued with the human lifespan and why some live longer than others. Certainly genetics plays a large role, however, in the case of my relatives, I am quite certain they were just plain stubborn and refused to get sick. The mind is a powerful tool. The web series will address everything from simple tips for maintaining a youthful presence to the full Monty: Stem cell therapy, HGH injections, new products and cutting-edge treatments including plastic surgery (with the help of my husband, currently the President of the Los Angeles Society of Plastic Surgeons, considering that he is writing a book focusing on what works and what’s hype) and other tips that may help defy gravity. Although, less is generally better and the wind-blown look and duck lips are to be avoided at all cost. Therefore, I am shamelessly plugging “STOP THE CLOCK!” in a new section of this magazine on page 38. Just keep in mind that moderation and balance is key and if you are seriously in tune with the first paragraph of this little decree, it will be a springboard to a healthy life. A content soul and authentic smile are the signs of an ageless mind. In closing, I feel it is important to manage and balance relationships and friendships in a way that truly supports harmony for all involved. However, what others think about you should never be a concern. There are always those who exist to challenge us, in turn, enlighten us spiritually and keep us striving toward ways to navigate through life in a state of gratitude and forgiveness. Additionally, having a number of wise mentors is essential. And last, but certainly not least, GIVE BACK. It is an act of gratefulness for our many blessings and an acknowledgement to life itself that we are not taking one ounce for granted. I would be remiss if I did not mention a few of my favorite “Local” routines ... Anti-Aging Radio-Frequency treatments at Ruth Swissa in Agoura … keeps facial muscles fit (see: www.ruthswissa.com), DNA skin care products (see: www.flawlessskins.com) … LOVE these unique products and their stem cell therapy … and lastly, vanity clearly wins out on this one, considering zero mascara is needed for 10+ days, with extraordinary eyelashes applied for special occasions. Erin McMillan at Patty Cake Cosmetics in Thousand Oaks … provides completely natural looking “frames for the windows to our souls” … and her patented adhesive is gentle on your own lashes (trumps extensions) and are just plain pretty! Like Molly Shannon’s, infamous SNL character, Sally O’Malley “I like to kick, stretch and kick … because I’m 50!!!“ But I’m keeping my pants below the belly button.

when they’ve gotten overtly obvious plastic surgery or overdone using Botox or fillers - it seems as women we can’t win!! We can. We can accept that we are going to age and going to show the effects of age on our bodies and faces, and learn to be okay with it. Not an easy task, but a necessary one. For myself, it’s a continual work in progress that includes trying to eat right and exercise for my physical health, and trying to refrain from negative self-talk for my mental health. Exercise has always been a positive outlet for me both physically and mentally, so it is something I do everyday. I just completed two half marathons in the last few months (with one of my daughters), I hike with my fabulous rescue pit/boxer mix in the beautiful hills of Malibu, and ride horses on Ahmanson Ranch every chance I get, in addition to lessoning at a nearby Malibu training barn. I recently tried and loved stand up paddle boarding in Paradise Cove. And yes, I am diligent about wearing sunscreen every day.

W

hen my husband, Linden Ashby, looked through my individual photo choices, he left me a note that said, “#219- fix the makeup smudge under your left eye, but leave the rest!” The “rest” was referring to any wrinkles or other issues I would look at and want the photographer’s magic retouching wand to erase.

First of all, I realize how very lucky am I to be married to a man, an actor no less, who loves me unconditionally and finds me just as beautiful today as he found me 28 years ago when we got engaged. But the main reason I am sharing this is because we have become accustomed to seeing women in film and print that haven’t aged, unlike what is acceptable for

their male counterparts. I recently watched an entertainment segment with two actors who had worked together 17 years ago and then again this year. The clips showed them as they were in the 90’s as well as today. He had certainly become an older, yet still attractive man, however she appeared to have not aged at all. Unfortunately, our society expects women to simply not show that they are growing older. How can that expectation be realistic when we as human beings are animals – can you imagine how bizarre it would be if male dogs were allowed to age as nature intended while female dogs were expected to remain forever youthful looking? Another problem with the pressure of this unnatural requirement is that society is also judgmental towards a female actor (or anyone, for that matter)

As much as I appreciated being “a pretty girl” when I was younger, I am so very glad I am no longer that girl and that I have the life I have today and the years of experience living that life. To be a woman with the aforementioned loving husband, two admirable daughters in their 20’s, and a career that seems to keep plugging along is well worth the years reflected on my face that it took to get here. Admittedly, when I first saw the picture proofs I cringed a little, but after a hike with my dog I went through them again and was really happy with what and whom they portrayed. The level of self-acceptance I possess has redefined my personal standard of beauty. I also loved our group shots considering they too reflected the positive way we can choose to feel about ourselves. That doesn’t mean there weren’t other “issues” I asked the photographer to fix … because I will be honest with you, there were a few…but it’s a work in progress, right?! After spending the last four seasons as Mayor Carol Lockwood on the “Vampire Diaries” for the CW, I am now Co-starring on both “Reckless” for CBS and “Starcrossed” for the CW premiering this February, as well as, recurring on Teen Wolf for MTV. I hope you can tune in!

was faced with a choice as I contemplated the inevitable. Do I do everything in

my power to conceal my age, or embrace it and redefine it?

Life screams ahead like a black diamond run on a ski slope. All the challenges, peaks and valleys come at us whether we like it or not. On the ride we pick up speed as we earn our weather worn faces. What of this is beautiful? Can we love what is? I have always loved beauty. God made beauty and I love being surrounded by it. Be it in nature, or any kind of excellently executed design, I exhale with a smile of contentment, especially if I was privileged to help create it.

And speaking of beauty, I have always worked hard to make the most of what I was given. I would not consider myself one of the “pretty girls” growing up. I am sure that caused me to work harder, to prove I had something going on under the extra pounds and a polka dot face. Adversity is always with us, and either refines us or defeats us. Perhaps that is why I look for beauty in the unexpected. We expect beauty in a lovely young woman, a brand new baby, a screen goddess, dramatic scenes in nature and fine architecture. We would not likely recognize obvious beauty in a storm ravaged disaster area, an old worn face, the poor and lonely walking the streets, or the imprisoned or defeated. And yet these circumstances can lead to the most beautiful things and the most beautiful people we ever know in this life. Beauty such as this is found in the neighborhood

I62I WESTLAKE MAGAZINE • JAN.FEB2014

So how do I extend this same type of thinking toward myself? How can I refrain from devaluing myself the way our culture will devalue a woman no longer considered young, and yet still find and value beauty? I have chosen to employ true beauty recipes that still work for the modern women of today. Secret recipe number 1: Don’t focus on self. Focus on others. If I focus on others, I am not busy thinking about what I do or don’t have, but how I can be there for someone else. Secret recipe 2: These three things…”faith , hope and love. The greatest of these is love.” Faith for my spirit – believing in things hoped for but not yet seen, believing there’s a gift in a crisis, knowing that things will all work out for good in the end. Hope for my mind. This virtue allows my mind to rest and be free. Hope deferred makes the heart sick. Gratitude makes the heart happy. Love, ah love. Love for self, love for others, love for God and country. So trite? So true. I am inspired everyday by my loving husband and my extraordinary daughters. The most beautiful people I ever encounter are those that are full of love. It just oozes right out of their pores making their skin brighter and their being lighter. The loving spirit is forever young. Does this come naturally to some? It is quite possibly genetically predetermined, but for those of us that didn't get that gene - we must continually use the recipes! I invite you to learn more about Creating4ACause on page 85. So what about that choice to love ‘what is’? Lets choose to go for it! I choose to live louder and bolder than any decade before. I choose to love my life –the alternative is not so attractive! I choose to take every opportunity and embrace the hopes and dreams in my heart and not give up. Can I find beauty at 50 and redefine it? yes, yes yes!! (sounds like that herbalessence commercial … LOL)

ELLEN LEYVA

News Anchor / Mother / Intrepid Soul Searcher

A

s a news anchor for ABC7, I am constantly reminded, in high definition no less, that personal appearance is an important element of my job. My News

Director, Cheryl Fair and the President of ABC7, Arnie Kleiner have reassured many times over that they don't expect me to look like the Health reporter they hired back when I was 32 years old. Instead, they simply hope that I take care of myself and stay healthy. Equally important, they thoughtfully convey that we avoid the fitted-sheet plastic surgery look. I appreciate their loving support, however I'd be lying if there weren't times when I look in the mirror and long for the days when I didn't have to use quite as much concealer. Aging in the public eye adds a bit more pressure, especially when you're "on" for two and a half hours a day, 5 days a week. That said, I try not to dwell on every little wrinkle the develops, otherwise I'd make myself nuts. Thinking about this article made me take a hard look at myself and how I view aging. I've been on a soul-searching mission for about 5 years and I've learned a lot through self-reflection (and therapy) that has helped me to pay attention to and value what is going on inside and less on outer appearances. I've learned that no matter how amazing you look, if you're unhappy, it'll eventually show itself in how you carry yourself and how well you take care of health. I recently read, "Beauty might bring happiness, but Happiness always brings beauty". I believe this to be true. One day as I was headed out the door to get Botox between my eyebrows, my daughter, Audrey, said, "everyone has wrinkles when they smile!” It made me laugh at the time, but it was a profound statement. I want to be the Grandmother someday that has the "smiling" wrinkles, not the frowning ones. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to color my gray hair and I am still going to get Botox so I won't have a tiny plumber's butt between my eyebrows. Furthermore, I am still going to read up on the latest, greatest "miracle creams" and try to drink my 8 glasses of water a day. My Mother is 90 and still colors her hair! I'm hoping by the time I'm 90, they'll event a pill or a laser that keeps your hair the color you were born with.

Speaking of my Mother, I have to say I was blessed with her good skin. I never get facials and I don't really practice any one particular skin care regimen. I'm a product junkie and am always trying out new things. It's a problem because I don't really know which ones actually work! Retin-A products have been really good to me. While they make me peel like a snake, they eventually reveal a fresher skin underneath. I never, ever go out without sunscreen. I

was the girl in college who didn't have the sexy brown legs. I am the whitest half-Mexican you'll ever meet! I gave up sugar, well almost, a couple of years ago. I am convinced it has helped my appearance, not only weight, but my skin as well. Perhaps not having the lows and highs that go with a sugar overload have kept my energy levels less erratic and helped my mood swings. Did I mention mood swings? Let’s face it, 50 can be a challenging age, with the hormonal tilt-a-whirl ride. After a ton of research and countless articles read, I decided that bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is a Godsend for me. The difference in how I feel is remarkable. There has been so much controversy regarding HRT, that it’s easy to become overwhelmed. All I can say is, do your research, talk to your Doctor, seek expert opinions, and then decide for yourself. For me, I believe it is something akin to the fountain of youth. My bone density and muscle mass have stayed at good levels, my mood swings are not as swingy, and I still have a zest for life and adventure.

As I’ve gotten older, my spiritual life takes on more importance. I believe in a higher power that connects us all. The power of gratitude has made a big difference in my life. Meditation and quiet time are essential elements of my day. When I’m not centered and living in the present, is when that enemy, anxiety rears its head. To be peaceful and calm is a really good way to live. In this society we live in, it’s important to many to have a beautiful appearance. I would argue that long after the photos with the perfect lighting, the incredible photographer, (thanks Kevin) and perhaps some photo-shopping, are faded, the only thing my loved ones will remember is how did I make them feel? How well did I love the people in my life? How do I want people to remember me? I hope it’s my beautiful heart. I truly am a believer that we are all born with a beautiful heart. Things I can’t live without: Family, Friends, wine, walks, quiet alone time, Christine Farrell, Bio-identical Goddess, my latest skincare find by Skinmedica, Levi’s, sweatpants and chocolate.

FEAR KN TS !

M. DAYLE THOMAS

WHAT WAS YOUR STRONGEST SECURITY AS A CHILD? Most likely, it was the strong connection you had with your parents. We always felt safe when we ran to them. They did not have to meet us with a gift; their open arms made us feel secure. I think we all agree that fear is among one of the most crippling of emotions that one can feel. It can literally paralyze us and take away our will to try or to accomplish our goals while overcoming our obstacles. One of the most comforting promises of our God is “I will never leave you or forsake you to face your hard times alone.” As we look closely at those promises, how can we turn them down? The truth is, we don’t have to because our father also stands with open arms to catch us before we stumble. As we embark on this new year of 2014, I encourage each of you to take a leap of faith, trust whole-heartedly and discover renewed strength, personal empowerment and the ability to embrace your journey, no matter what challenges present themselves. Allow yourself to be inspired, in turn, transforming the agonizing fear knots into “fear-not.” At least that’s the way I see it. I hope that this year will be your best year! God Bless,

Like many of us, escorted tours have matured a lot over the past decades. The top companies have done their due diligence researching what the experienced and inexperienced mature traveler seeks today. Forget the Tuesday-Belgium scenario where travelers were crowded onto leased busses, served mediocre pre-ordered meals, lodged in run- of-the-mill hotels catering to groups, and left in front of souvenir shops after an hour-long walk and history lesson. As recently discovered on an itinerary sampling of Rome, Umbria, Tuscany and Venice with Insight Vacations, pampering can become addictive. We were provided a well-paced journey that was interesting to the eye, ear, palate and transporting us in maximum comfort. We enjoyed superb dining in the best restaurants, luxury accommodations in central locations with ample time to explore on our own. Instead of dry historical dates and data, Belinda Richardson, our charismatic tour guide who has been with the company 20 years, filled our imaginations with delightful stories of both real people and legends that included the data yet captivated the listener. Not a time for napping.

Benvenuto a Roma UPON ARRIVING IN ROME, we were met at the airport by a company representative who collected our luggage and escorted us to the magnificent five-star Regina Hotel Baglioni on the stylish Via Veneto. Home to Queen Margherita of Savoy while awaiting completion of her residence across the street which today houses the U.S. Embassy, the hotel is one of the most important historical buildings in Rome and within walking distance of the Piazza di Spagna and Spanish Steps, Villa Borghese, and Via Condotti also noted for its fashionable boutiques and cafés. Our excursion around this splendid city, led by an engaging local expert, highlighted the historical sites--where Brutus and his cohorts murdered Julius Caesar, the Forum, Temple of the Vestal Virgins who became a powerful political force, as well as the Coliseum and other ancient sites. The following morning we boarded our air conditioned, companyowned motor coach, complete with extra “business class” legroom (only 40 seats vs. the usual 53), tray tables, reclining seat backs, foot rests, and complimentary Wi-Fi. We were dropped off at the entrance to the Vatican Museums, our VIP passes permitting us to bypass the long waiting lines and enter for a private escorted tour of halls filled with breath-taking ancient tapestries, sculptures, glorious ceiling frescoes, plus exclusive entrance to the renowned Bramante Staircase, a unique double-helix stairwell built in 1505 that is not open to the general public. And of course, we spent absorbing in total silence the awesome grandeur of the Sistine Chapel.

paralleled his life with that of St. Clare, whose remains are also housed in the cathedral. St. Francis, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone to a wealthy merchant and nicknamed Francesco ("the Frenchman") by his father, lived in luxury, went off to war, and upon his return, decided to lead a life dedicated to the sick and poor. Clare, 10 years younger, was also born into a wealthy Assisi family and shunned her life of pleasure and an arranged marriage to join Francis in his work with the suffering. She later established her own order, was canonized in August 1255 and is equally revered in the region. Our next hilltop town was Spello, an ancient village in the Perugian region of Umbria, enclosed by walls interrupted by several towering gates. It has some two dozen small churches, mostly medieval, and projects an inviting tranquility to visitor and villager alike. We stopped at Il Molino for a superb lunch that began with a delectable flan of pears with Pecorino cream followed by vegetable lasagna with fennel cream sauce, gnocchi with tomato and pancetta sauce, fillet of pork in a potato crust with walnuts and fresh porcini mushrooms, and molten chocolate fondant with orange cream for dessert. The feast, accompanied by an abundance of local wines, continued through the afternoon -- typical of the local Sunday custom where friends and family gather to celebrate at leisure the seasonal riches from garden, pasture and vineyard. On the feast of Corpus Christi 60 days after Easter, Spello celebrates Infiorata, the biggest festival of its kind in all of Italy. Following a tradition handed down through the centuries, the streets and piazzas are carpeted with over a mile of spectacular floral pictures made solely of flower petals, leaves and herbs hand placed one by one by some 40 groups of residents. Marco shared photos of past festivals so we could envision the magnificence and amazing scope of the scene.

The Hilltop Villages of Umbria BACK ON OUR COACH, we cracked open the chilled bottled water cabinet, which never ran dry, relaxed and enjoyed the passing landscapes as Belinda acquainted us with Orvieto, a medieval village dominated by its massive 14th century cathedral. A true masterpiece of Italian gothic art, its towering stone façade is adorned with bronze dragons, gold mosaics and marble bas-reliefs by Lorenzo Maitani. Set high on a volcanic butte, Orvieto’s cobbled streets are lined with charming stone homes, small shops and locally-owned restaurants true to the town’s Etruscan heritage. No McDonalds here -- or in any of the other medieval villages we visited. After walking around town and learning about its colorful history from Marco, our local storytelling historian, we found ourselves in a typical ristorante with a glass of Orvieto Classico vino as owner/master chef Lorenzo Polegri showed us how easy it is to make fresh pasta. Naturally, we enjoyed the results as part of our Etruscan lunch. A visit to Umbria is not complete without learning about the local olive oil production and the facts about “extra virgin” in Italy vs. the rest of the world. While visiting the third generation Ragani family-owned mill, we saw how the olives are processed and discovered the different stages of aging. In Italy, extra virgin olive oil must contain 90% of cold pressed oil. In the U.S., only 10% is required, and the rest can be any mixture of hot and cold processed olive oils. There is definitely a difference in taste once you have sampled the real thing. It was Sunday morning when we arrived in Assisi along with flocks of pilgrims mainly from Italy. Like the other medieval hilltop villages, the buildings, streets and alleys--all of stone, are filled with charm. When we reached the piazza in front of the Papal Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, Marco revealed stories about St. Francis, who is buried under the alter, and

Tuscany and Chianti Country

The small town of Cortona was frequently a setting in movie adaptation of Frances Mayes’ novel, “Under the Tuscan Sun.” Photo by Linda Lang.

Frances Mayes’ Casa Bramasole in Cortona FOR THOSE WHO have read the book and/or seen the movie, Under the Tuscan Sun, a visit to author Frances Mayes’ classic casa is quite enticing. We walked down a quiet, neatly-manicured dirt road with grand panoramas of the deep valleys to one side, exchanging pleasantries with several friendly residents accompanying their equally-friendly dogs, until we reached Mayes’ home which is currently embraced by scaffolding for renovation. After our en coach introduction to the small town of Cortona by Belinda, we dispersed upon arrival and were free for the next two hours to investigate the shops lining the streets and piazza, which were frequent settings in the Mayes movie. Like the hilltop villages, Cortona’s art and leather shops were particularly enticing, so we avoided temptation this time by settling this time for a cappuccino and pastry.

NOW IN THE center of Tuscany’s Chianti wine country, we headed to the tiny village of Fonterutoli where 24 generations of the Mazzei family have been making wine since 1432. Here we enjoyed a tasty Tuscan lunch with Count Francesco Mazzei who most graciously received us in his restaurant, Osteria di Fonterutoli, for a traditional Tuscan lunch with a fine selection of noble chiantis. Our lodging for the next two nights was Relais Borgo San Luigi, a splendid five-building retreat between Sienna and Florence dating back to the 17th century. Surrounded by nearly 15 acres of manicured parklands, its 73 rooms, most with private terrace or garden, and a separate dining and recreation building bordering one side of a massive swimming pool, blend the best of the original architecture with today’s standard luxuries. From here, we visited San Gimignano, known for its cluster of medieval towers and Vernaccia di San Gimignano, one of Italy’s best-known white wines. One of the most photographed hillside towns, it has also been the setting for numerous films including Tea with Mussolini, Where Angels Fear to Tread, The English Patient, Under the Tuscan Sun and Shakespearian productions such as Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado about Nothing. After shopping and looking around on our own, we returned to Borgo San Luigi to relax before a private wine tasting at Tenute Bichi Borghesi, a family-owned winery producing award-winning chiantis, followed by another sumptuous multiple course dinner in one of the area’s best family-run restaurants.

Benvenuti a Venezia EN ROUTE TO VENICE, we stopped at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello. Here we visited Victory Hall displaying all the World Championship F1 cars the Scuderia Ferrari has won since 1999; the World Champions history section dedicated to Formula 1 with historical cars, and the “pit wall” where Stefano Domenicali and the engineers work during the Grand Prix races. As we neared Venice, we said goodbye to our motor coach and Carlo, its genial driver, boarded water taxis and headed for the elegant BAUERs l ‘Hotel on the main canal near St. Mark’s Square. After settling into our large, luxurious rooms, we had several hours of free time to relax, shop or explore before heading to dinner in our choice of restaurants. With its maze of quaint streets, alleys and narrow canals lined with residences, art galleries, shops, designer boutiques, an abundance of dining spots and little grocery shops overflowing with colorful fresh produce, Venice is made for walking, capturing on your high tech device, and just pure enjoyment. Our last day began with a short walking tour escorted by Anna, our local guide, over the famed Rialto Bridge to some of the lesser-known quarters and colorful market place. Next, some opted for free time while others headed by water taxi to Murano, island home to the famous Venetian glass factories. Upon entering Vecchia, one of the largest, we watched artisans turn bubbling globs of red hot glass into delicate horses and birds, after which we entered the enormous two-story showroom of shelves and tables filled with extraordinary glass goblets, decanters, animals, figurines, jewelry, chandeliers, and intriguing displays of Venetian masks.

The grand canal in Venice bustles with activity throughout the day. Photo by Linda Lang.

Before dinner was an optional gondola ride, which, if you haven’t been to Venice before, is a must. Equally high on the to-do list is a visit to legendary Harry’s bar, frequented by Hemingway and other ex-pats, where we toasted with the bar’s famous Bellini before enjoying another multi-course dinner in an historic restaurant. This kind of pampering can become quite addictive. We could have probably done some of this on our own, but it would have cost the same just to book comparable rooms in the same hotels without any meals, transportation or concierge guide to introduce us to marvelous characters from the pages of history. We enjoyed not only the best, centrallylocated accommodations. We relaxed in comfort while being transported to the most interesting towns where we enjoyed fine wining and dining, VIP entrances to museums, wine tastings, and other activities -- all without having to worry about the pre-planning, watching our budget, selecting hotels, restaurants, hauling luggage, transfers, car rentals or water taxis in Venice, the endless tipping, waiting in long lines, etc. It’s easy to understand why 40% of the company’s clients return year after year. To check out the Insight Vacations series of Country Roads signature journeys in Italy and other locales worldwide, go to www.insightvacations.com/us or call 1-888-680-1241. Arrivederci.

A PIECE OF WINE LUXURY IN SANTA YNEZ

W

HILE IN SEARCH OF AMAZING WINES, I DISCOVERED AN EXCLUSIVE AND EXCEPTIONAL WINERY RIGHT OUTSIDE OF LOS ANGELES, SUNSTONE WINERY. This has been a truly magical experience, as though traveling through the heart of French wine country. Sunstone is a boutique winery named after the vineyard estate’s exposed sun-dappled shale and stones and is the premiere destination winery on the central coast. Most visitors will agree that Sunstone, located just a thirty minutes drive north of Santa Barbara, is the most beautiful vineyard and wine-tasting room on California’s Central Coast. The tasting room is reminiscent of some of the small wineries in France’s Provencal countryside, featuring a kitchen complete with a wood-burning oven and two

stone barrel-aging caves built into the hillside. The gorgeous courtyards and picnic grounds provide the perfect place to experience the wines. The Villa at Sunstone now serves as an extension of the Sunstone Winery lifestyle by providing a culinary center to entertain guests for weddings, winemaker dinners and private culinary retreats. S u n s t o n e ’s twenty-eight acre vineyard, planted in 1990 for Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Viognier is farmed in an organic, bio-sustainable manner, meeting all California Certified Organic Farmer standards. A truly outstanding wine, which I discovered while tasting with winery owner Bion Rice, was the Cabernet Franc 2010, simply stunning with bold fruit and black cherry aromas. This is a wine that is really alive and balanced. Sunstone is renowned for its Rhone varietals, including Viognier, which received a Gold Medal at the San Francisco Wine Competition, and their unique Syrah that rated 90 Points at the Wine Enthusiast’s Beverage Testing Institute. Highly acclaimed “Eros”, a Bordeaux-style blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, has earned Best of Class at the Los Angeles County Fair, and also received 90 Points in Wine Enthusiast. And because locals know best, Sunstone has also been honored by the Santa Barbara Independent reader poll as "Santa Barbara's Favorite Red Wine" and “Best Tasting Room”. As a guest of The Villa I was given exclusive access to the 8,500 square foot Tuscan-inspired escape. The winery now offers the event center for location shoots, culinary retreats and dreamy weddings. The Villa sits above the winery with a spectacular view of the surrounding vineyards, and is a perfect location for exclusive outings and creating special moments with family, friends and clients. After meeting with Bion Rice and meeting his staff, I was excited to find a young winemaker and his enthusiastic staff carrying on his family’s tradition in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. D'Alfonso-Curran Wines Santa Barbara County enjoys the longest growing season in California, making D’Alfonso-Curran’s harvest season stretch from August through November. At D’AlfonsoCurran, they focus their efforts on making great wines and leave the growing of world-class grapes to the viticulturalists, from whom they purchase all of our fruit. Visit and taste by appointment only their portfolio of wines: BADGE, Di Bruno, Curran and D’Alfonso-Curran. I would suggest trying the 2007 D'Alfonso-Curran Pinot Noir, Rancho La Viña. D’Alfonso-Curran is their flagship brand, showcasing ultra-premium, vineyarddesignated Pinot Noirs exclusively from the Santa Rita Hills AVA. Wine tastings by appointment only. 4457 Santa Rosa Rd, Suite 5 Lompoc, CA 93436 805.736.9411 • www.d-cwines.com

Cork’s n’ Crowns Santa Barbara’s latest addition to the Urban Wine Trail, Corks n’ Crowns, is proud to feature a wide selection of small production, hard-to-find, award winning wines from California’s boutique wineries. As many of our readers know, boutique wineries are dear to my heart and I believe that they show the true heart of winemaking. I would suggest ordering the Pinot Flight. The Pinot Noir Flight features ultra-premium, limited-production Pinots that are all highly regarded by top reviewers like Keller Estate 2009 La Cruz Vineyard Pinot Noir. This flight is an experience of top California winemakers and acclaimed international wineries. Beer enthusiasts will also enjoy exceptional craft beers from across the country, each selection produced by small, independent brewers who use only traditional ingredients and time-honored methods. Hours: Open daily 11am - 7pm. 32 Anacapa St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101. 805.845.8700 • www.corksandcrowns.com

Conway Family Wines Owned and operated by the Conway family that produce high quality red and white wines from their estate vines and other vineyards throughout California. The family believes in sustainable agricultural and vineyard practices that show through in their amazing collection of wines. A stand out is the 2010 Deep Sea Pinot Noir Solomon Hills ($39). The fruit from the Solomon Hills Vineyard in Santa Maria, California is some of the most sought after Pinot Noir fruit in the state. With bursts of berry, this wine is balanced with subtle mineral and earthy flavors from start to finish. If you're looking for a great California Pinot Noir, look no further as you can experience this wine and others while overlooking the Santa Barbara ocean front at their Deep Sea Tasting Room. Hours: Mon - Sun 12pm-7 pm. 217 Stearns Wharf Santa Barbara CA 93101. 805.489.2855 • www.conwayfamilywines.com

Jettylynn Winery This winery is a newcomer to the Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo area and will not stay a secret for long. Raynette Gregory, owner of Jettlynn Winery has revealed the inaugural release of two captivating blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot. Jettylynn Winery offers award winning Central Coast wines in both Mon Couer and Opulent. With the winery receiving 91 points for its blend Master Blend Mon Couer Paso Robles ($70), this is a great conversation starter and does not disappoint with intriguing color and alluring tender tones that is consistent and well rounded. A wine that lingers from start to finish. It’s time to experience a new winery that brings the love of wine and people together to celebrate it. Wine tasting by appointment. 8585 Cross Canyons Rd San Miguel, California 93451. 805.491.2500 • www.jettlynnwinery.com

Summerland Winery & Tasting Room Summerland Winery owner Nebil “Bilo” Zarif strives to showcase excellent fruit quality combined with strong regional character in all his wines. Visit and taste for this reason alone: Summerland’s efforts in the production of Burgundian varietals sourced from cool climate vineyards were recognized by Robert Parker who rated the 2002 Bien Nacido Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, 92 points and 93 points respectively, in The Wine Advocate. I suggest trying the 2012 Grenache Rosé, Paso Robles ($25). With the warm months here, this wine delivers a fruity palate and a burst of acidity. With a great price point, this wine is perfect for a Sunday grilling with friends. Hours: Mon - Sun 11am - 7pm. 2330 Lillie Ave Summerland CA 93067. 805.565.9463 • www.summerlandwine.com

Stonehaus at Westlake Village Inn Surrounded by its own crafted vineyard, this boutique tasting experience, reminiscent of Italy, is the newest addition to the Westlake Village Inn. The Stonehaus is one of the most unique lifestyle gathering places in the greater Los Angeles area that combines 140 bottles of specially selected wines from around the world, also featuring their own private label wines. What impressed me are the flights. Flights range from Sparkling Wines and Champagne to Rhone Varietals and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each flight features a choice of wines within that varietal, allowing you to get a glimpse of all of the wines they have to offer. Paired perfectly with one of their signature boards made with food featuring fresh, healthy and seasonal ingredients this is the perfect getaway for the weekend. Hours: Mon - Thurs 6am - 8pm, Fri 6am - 11pm, Sat 7am - 11pm, Sunday 7am - 8pm. 32039 Agoura Road Westlake Village, CA 91361. 818.483.1152 • www.the-stonehaus.com

THE SADDLE PEAK LODGE SADDLE PEAK LODGE has been a place of enchantment, romance and great dining for generations of those who seek a unique experience. Nestled deep in the hills of Malibu, along the creek that flows through Las Virgenes Canyon to the Pacific Ocean, the Lodge stands under fabulous Saddle Peak—a majestic rock formation made, according to local legend, when God’s first horseman sat upon the Santa Monica mountains. In the shadow of the Peak, a colorful mix of cowboys, hunters, fishermen, oil riggers and miners bound for the gold fields of Piru Creek and the Upper Ojai stopped at the Lodge, then a one room cabin, to swap stories, take on supplies, or simply slake their thirst with a local brew called “Hillbilly Punch”. Tales of Saddle Peak Lodge abound, in enough variety to fill several volumes. Today, Saddle Peak Lodge offers secrets and charms unmatched anywhere on the California coast.
