INCE HER BREAKOUT ROLE AS THE DRY-WITTED DEPUTY CLEMENTINE JOHNSON ON COMEDY CENTRAL'S “RENO 911”, ACTRESS WENDI MCLENDON-COVEY HAS HAD AUDIENCES IN STITCHES WITH HER HYSTERICAL, RAZOR-SHARP IMPROVISATIONAL COMEDY. McLendon-Covey, who played Rita in the box office hit “Bridesmaids”, has also appeared on shows such as “The Office”, “Cougar Town”, “Hot in Cleveland” and “Modern Family” among others. Now the sassy blonde comedy queen is starring in a brand-new sitcom for ABC. About her hilarious new show she says, “Out of all the pilots I’d seen scripts for, ‘The Goldbergs’ was the one I just knew I had to do.” The show’s writer and creator, Adam F. Goldberg, compiled hundreds of hours of home video footage of his family, by filming everything that went on in his own house growing up. “He’d sent me some of those videos with the script. It was just so funny I didn’t want to read any other pilots after I saw it.” Her character, Beverly Goldberg, is a neurotic, frustrated stay-at-home mom who wants to make sure everyone in the house knows her work comes via hard sacrifice. I think Beverly wanted the big career with the big title, but she never got it so she takes it out on her husband and kids.” Still, she says, “There’s a tender side, because at the end of the day, it’s a family and they love each other—flaws and all.”
B Y
S T E P H E N
M O R A L E S
Set in the 1980s, the show delivers lots of decade-ofexcess favorites like Jazzercise, shoulder pads and big hair—something that brings back memories of her own youth. “Growing up, we wouldn’t have dreamed of stepping out in sweaty yoga pants. It was full regalia all the time. I wouldn’t have even thought to show up for school without dramatic eyeliner, Makiage make-up and massive hair. Those were theatrical days fashion-wise. You were snatched up all the time. You represented.” And, not only is the new series a perfect fit for her, it’s been worth the wait. “I started very late in this business. I never went on auditions as a kid, but I always wanted to. I remember actually sitting down and writing a letter to the ‘Mickey Mouse Club’ requesting an audition. I had even worked on a whole dance routine with my next door neighbor. I was always a weird, theatrical kind of kid. I loved to stage shows and write stuff— that’s all I ever wanted to do. But it wasn’t encouraged. I was allowed to participate in recitals and church stuff, but never professional auditions. My parents wouldn’t even consider it.” Even her foray into dance as a child was by default. “Both my sister and I were awkward—very gangly and klutzy.” Hoping for a charm school-like effect, her mom enrolled them in dance classes. “She started us in ballet with the idea that we’d become more graceful. But it wasn’t an invitation to get into show business. I’m sure my parents never thought I’d become an actress.” Instead, she says, “They encouraged me to become a flight attendant. I think it seemed like a nice, sensible profession for me.” Still, she’s thankful for their choices. McLendon-Covey, whose first professional gig was a Limp Bizkit video says, “I was in my 20s when I finally started to get serious. But it’s completely okay because if things had happened for me earlier in life, that wouldn’t have worked. It would probably have broken me. Young kids just don’t know how to navigate millions of people thinking they’re awesome 24 hours a day. Everyone loves you when you’re on a role, but at some point, it has to end. I’m happy to be doing this at the age I am. The idea that once you hit a certain your career is over just isn’t true. Most of the women I do know are in their 40s and are working constantly and have great careers. I think what doesn’t work—what people don’t care about—what shines a light on being older, is a 45-year-old still going for roles that everyone knows would be better suited for a 25-yearold. It was a relief to turn 40, I think. If you feel fabulous, age doesn’t matter.” In fact, she says the subject never even comes up for her. “I’m working more than I ever have. I think there’s a confidence and a wisdom one stands to gain with age—as long as you’re open to it.”

FINDING TIME TO REST AND RELAX DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON
IT IS CERTAINLY A TREAT TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRAVEL ABROAD AND VISIT A ROYAL PALACE HOWEVER THE TRUTH IS, YOU DON’T HAVE TO TRAVEL FAR TO HAVE THIS EXPERIENCE. This issue, our Daytripper section features one of the most magical hotel properties in Southern California, the Langham Huntington in Pasadena, California. The Langham Huntington Hotel provides the grace and elegance of a royal palace with the feel and glamour of old Hollywood. The magnificent property is quietly nestled at the base of the stunning San Gabriel Mountains, just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles in beautiful Pasadena. Situated on 23 acres with grand historic ballrooms and gardens, the hotel features world-class dining, an award-winning spa, a variety of recreational activities and 380 elegant guest rooms, suites and cottages. Although, considered the finest hotel in Pasadena their new 11,000-square-foot spa will take your breath away. The spa features a state-of-the-art fitness center and 13 treatment rooms, including a couple’s room. A unique new element to The Huntington Spa is Chuan Body + Soul, which incorporates Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) services to provide a comprehensive wellness experience. All Chuan signature treatments are based upon the principles of TCM which include the five elements, breathing rituals and acupressure. In addition to its signature treatments, Chuan Body + Soul also offers TCM therapies including acupuncture,
Ho Guan (cupping), moxibustion, ear seeds and other techniques. With the addition of Chuan Body + Soul, The Huntington Spa is the only luxury hotel spa in Los Angeles offering treatments based on Traditional Chinese Medicine. Additionally, to dine at The Langham, Pasadena is to savor extraordinary dishes passionately prepared by a team of chefs, each determined to outdo their fellows with creativity and culinary flair. The holiday season is one of joy and giving, however, it also demands a lot of hustle and bustle, entertaining and hosting guests. Make sure you schedule time for rest and relaxation to stay healthy and vibrant throughout this wonderful season. The Langham Huntington in Pasadena is roughly a 45-minute drive door to door and a little Chuan Body and Soul is a sure way to maintain your balance and harmony!

"It's like your children talking about holidays, you find they have a quite different memory of it from you. Perhaps everything is not how it is, but how it's remembered." ~ Denis Norden
W W W.W E S T L A K E M A G A Z I N E . C O M
S MOST OF THE COUNTRY PREPARES FOR A LONG AND LIKELY BRUTAL WINTER, WE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ARE ENJOYING OUR CLASSIC MILD FALL CLIMATE. Aside from the weather variance, we prepare for the holiday season just like the rest of our American peers, although while some in the northeast will enjoy a white Christmas, we can sometimes be found celebrating that day at the beach. November is the official entryway to the holiday festivities and this, our Holiday Issue, celebrates that glorious season. The holidays are a magical time of year filled with anticipation and annual activities reserved exclusively for this season. Perhaps it's the deviation from the routine of the foregoing year that makes these last couple of months in the year feel particularly special. It's also a time when the year begins to wind down and come to a close. We can reflect on our preceding achievements and as the year culminates, feel gratified knowing we have successfully tackled the challenges we faced the past several months. It's a bittersweet experience celebrating those most significant holidays while kissing yet another year goodbye. And with that same sentiment I conclude this letter with a final goodbye as editor-in-chief of Westlake Magazine. I have held this post for three and a half years this time around, having served as editor 13 years ago for a few years as well. I'm now stepping down to work on other projects and to help my daughter plan her upcoming wedding. I have loved every minute of my work here and will continue to be a huge fan and supporter of Westlake Magazine. I'm not leaving the area so I'm sure I will continue to bump into many of you around town, and I also invite you to keep in touch, whether through e-mail, phone or social media. I wish you all a very happy holiday season, whether you find your way to the snow or decide to celebrate along the Southern California shoreline.

T’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN! The time of year that represents new beginnings in a number of ways. Although we hang our hats in sunny southern California and may not don parkas and gloves, we do, however, have the opportunity to experience a brisk change in the air, providing us with the opportunity to ignite a few logs in the fireplace and drag out the warm clothing. Additionally, with Thanksgiving and the holiday season upon us, we find ourselves humming along with some of our favorite seasonal melodies that ring across the radio waves and at shopping centers everywhere. The excitement of a new season and preparing for a new year has a way of inspiring us to truly embrace the spirit of giving and explore ways to further enjoy the family experience … or in some cases endure. Westlake Magazine has the distinct pleasure to once again feature an extremely dynamic member of the community on our cover, pop star Britney Spears. Britney made her mark in the music industry starting at age eight. We often catch sight of Britney at the local shopping centers, restaurants or parks with her children. Focusing on “family first” and embracing her own favorite childhood memories, Britney is set to release her eighth studio album on December 3rd, fondly entitled Britney Jean, a name she was given by her family and friends during her early childhood years. We invite you to turn to page 50 and enjoy our cover story spotlighting this extraordinarily talented young woman. Additionally, in this Holiday Issue we highlight dream travel gifts featuring the Caribbean, New Zealand and Italy as well as unforgettable boating experiences. Our Culinary life guest editor, “Foodie On Call” Jennifer Morris, explores new places to please the palate, and you’ll want to flip to our wine guide for ideas on the perfect holiday wine basket. Lastly, check out our rockin’ fashion spread featuring Kiss lead guitarist Tommy Thayer and his stunning wife, Amber. We hope to see you all at our 21st Anniversary Celebration featuring a luxury car show and food and wine tastings on Thursday, November 7th 5:30-8pm at the Calabasas Country Club.

other, wife, commercial actress, lifestyle editor of SHAPE, OK!, and Star magazines, Susan Campbell Cross is also writer of “The FabYOUList: List it, Live it, Love Your Life.” From a young age, Campbell Cross loved to write, writing “books” for her grandmother at the young age of 5-years-old. “The stories were simple, and the spelling was atrocious, but these were my earliest attempts at writing,” she says. Growing up, Campbell Cross moved from Washington DC, to Alexandria, Va. and then Pittsburgh, eventually attending the University of California, San Diego for writing. As Campbell Cross began her life as a writer, she contemplated all the activities and adventures she had yet to discover. “I realized when I was closer to forty than thirty that there were so many things I thought I would have done with my life, but hadn’t,” she says, “before I made that list I thought I might have missed out on becoming all I was meant to be. Now I know with all certainty that there’s no such thing as too old, or too late. There isn’t a magic hourglass running out of time, and there’s no expiration date on dreams.” She took the opportunity to fulfill her dreams and in turn, learn from the experience. The book is a list of forty
things/activities she wished she had done, the last one being “write a book.” Along the way, Campbell Cross found new hobbies and made memories. Some activities included going to a strip club, flying the trapeze, paddle boarding, and getting involved in a new cause. “I got something out of everything on my list,” she says, “I can’t really say any of the experiences were bad. That being said, I don’t think I’ll be sunbathing topless again any time soon. Once burned, twice shy.” Although sunbathing was not the most enjoyable, Campbell Cross found a new love in paddle boarding, yoga, commercial acting, and volunteering, which became a part of her regular life. “I continue to volunteer for ACT Today! (Autism Care and Treatment).” “I hope reading ‘The FabYOUList: List it, Live it, Love Your Life’ helps people see that if I could change my life with a list, they can, too,” said Campbell Cross, “Conquering the challenges on my list, including #40 “write a book” didn’t change me, it made me MORE me.” She is now embarking on a new adventure, writing her next book, “Declawing the Cat: How to be a Better Female Friend” and continuing to write lifestyle articles for magazines.

HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO LEARN TO PLAY THE PIANO, BUT FOR WHATEVER REASON, NEVER GOT THE CHANCE? Imagine or simply recall the beautiful, classic piano sitting listlessly in your living room. The prevailing thought would be that if there were nobody to bring it to life, it would squander precious living space, collecting specks or even layers of dust. Despite this fact that taunts many households, there is a solution whereby dulcet tones can emanate from piano keys without the necessary fingers to play them. Manipulated in a precisely disembodied fashion, the piano can actually play itself. That is, according to piano pioneer, Nick Morris, computer installations implanted under the piano carriage can be digitally linked to any tablet, phone, or TV to engender the illusion of spontaneous musical grandeur. Using a mobile device, you can access a play list via iTunes to spark your piano to motion, recreating the first few verses of Freddie Mercury's last live performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” for instance, down to the velocity, pressure and style with which he vitalized the keys. The instrumentation would be supplemented with his world-class vocals booming from speakers strategically affixed as add-ons to your piano. Undoubtedly, it would be as if his ghost returned from the grave and into your personal air space. To add to the interactive experience, you can entertain yourself or guests by basking in the natural combination of visual and audio stimulation—video of any performance juxtaposed alongside live, majestic piano bliss. If the hunger to be a vicarious performer strikes, you can even croon or belt out the lyrics to any song off a screen in rhythm with a live piano; or, in other words, partake in acoustic karaoke. Not to mention, if you're feeling constructive, you can use the phantom keys as an instructional tool to begin making headway as a legitimate pianist. Consequently, while there are many software programs that make the piano a sentient being, there is one in particular called “DLX,” which Morris noted, emulates “fine increments of expression.” But it is the labored hardware placement of levered light sensors called electromagnetic solenoids—overlaid over the wooden stems attached to the piano keys—that are responsible for the bulk of the system and the overall transformation from a “passive” to an “active” piano. Morris, who has been a vanguard of the applied science, has worked with several celebrities, many of whom are admiring spectators, like Harrison Ford, or the musically inclined, like Stevie Wonder and Lionel Richie. They, in addition to today's musicians, are fond of this resource to record pieces with untouchable accuracy. Thirty years later, Morris still works closely with manufacturers to not only improve upon the mechanization, but convert antique, 150-year old pianos into modern phenomenons. Finally, if you're new to this, you'd be surprised that “more pianos are sold with this technology than without,” says Morris, who is adamant that the investment is more than worth it. The cost, ranging from five to nine thousand, would only “appreciate” your sacrosanct piano for future generations.

“I opened up my door and the whole ridge was on fire, headed toward the house,” says Close.
“I loved the fact that Howard Stern was going to be one of the judges,” Close said. “I had some real respect for the show and some of the artists they had on board. It’s really a platform for somebody who’s pushing the envelope of anything in performance.”
the middle of the night.
He had just come from the airport and one of his precious earth harps and some of his gear was still in his car. He grabbed the violin jacket that he had been working on that was on the mannequin, as he flew out the front door before his home burned to the ground. Close couldn’t spend time mourning the loss -- he had a big show booked in Hong Kong in two weeks, so with the help of some boat builders and architects in the family, they got down to the business of replenishing his arsenal. “It was all hands on deck,” he said. Then he rebuilt his home on the same property, this time with a studio that contains an opening for the strings of his instrument to extend out to the hills of Malibu in which much of his new album “Behind the Veil” was recorded. “The opening is in a glass wall and the strings of the earth harp go out that opening up the side of the mountain and attach into the mountain,” he said. “It’s really cool.” Right before the fire, he had also gone through the demise of a marriage. During the upheaval, he met his current wife Sarah and as their home was rebuilt and rose from the ashes, she
She was also responsible for Close finally accepting the third invitation to appear on America’s Got Talent.
Close indeed pushes the envelope. The musician, architect, artist, inventor, eccentric, visionary created his first earth harp in 1999 after attending the Art Institute of Chicago. He describes what he does as “the synthesis of sculpture, music and architecture, his three main loves.” His mother was very influential as an architect. “The first piece of inspiration art I experienced was when Mom took a room and painted all these giant shapes all over it and I thought that was so cool,” he said. Right now, his unique art is pretty much the topic of conversation in the family. “I think I’m a little bit of mad scientist meets a Beethoven wanna-be,” he said. “What’s cool about it is it really turns the theater into the instrument,” says Close of the earth harp, which takes three hours to “install” for a concert. “The audience is really inside the instrument.”

“The resort felt that the Aviara Kids Academy would be a fun place for children to meet other children, learn about the environment, and even travel back 8,000 years and study the Kumeyaay Indians who roamed San Diego’s very own Batiquitos Lagoon,” explained Chef Concierge Sarah Sbicca, the head of Park Hyatt Aviara’s guest relations and an ambassador from the resort to the city. Led by the Academy Director, the Aviara Kids Academy will provide your child with a list of activities that is essentially endless. A 24-hour, completely stocked game room, a plethora of arts and crafts, nature walks under the San Diego sun and even the chance to meet, discuss and create healthy food options with one of the resort’s chefs are some of the additional ways in which the Academy aims to keep its young guests active, engaged and inspired. “Year after year, the kids come back and get to see one another. The Aviara Kids Academy creates memories and friendships they look forward to and will always give them a warm feeling when thinking about family vacations at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort,” attests Sbicca to the resort’s commitment to its patrons. DR. CHOROOMI Artistry Through Dentistry
fter witnessing his family and friends’ work ethic in his parents’ native Iran, then 20-year-old Amir Choroomi had an epiphany: “I said to myself, look at all these people with limited amount of facilities, but are working so hard to get to the next level. And I had it all in America, with all the opportunities for school and education. It never really hit me until I went there,” Dr. Choroomi says. He attributes his zeal and gratitude to the unyielding ethic observed during a family event. Upon returning to the United States, Chooromi, with 200 dollars in his pocket, enrolled in college, waited tables, and worked as a bus boy five days a week while living with his uncle near his alma mater, Taft High School. Today, Dr. Choroomi has been practicing dentistry for eight years since graduating from the University of Pacific, San Francisco; two of those years were spent under apprenticeships and in 2007 he opened his first practice in Agoura Hills, and later a second in Canoga Park. Dentistry was not a first love for the 39-year-old dentist nor was it initially his idea. After asking his study partners what they would do after undergrad, some mentioned pharmacy, some suggested dentistry, and the latter is where his ears perked. As a child Dr. Choroomi painted classical miniature Persian works. The hand-eye coordination gained from his early years as an artist, paired with his exposure to his father’s carpentry business, gave birth to a skill dentistry necessitates: Dexterity. “Some people take a medical approach to dentistry. And yes, that is 50 per-
cent of it,” Dr. Choroomni says. “The other half is your artistic hand skills, hand-eye coordination, like a painter. Like design, it is a craft. You have to be able to design inlays, outlays, crowns, and bridges. It is the combination of a lot of skills.”
“Another new system available at Agoura Dental is Fast Braces®. Compared to traditional wire braces, the new method is quicker, less costly, and more hygienic.”
Dr. Choroomi’s age reveals his penchant for the latest dental technology and in turn, has made his practice one of the few operating solely on multiple state-of-the art software and techniques. During consultations, patients can see potential results by way of new software that takes photographic images and allows Dr. Choroomi and his patients to adjust those images, giving them an instant and accurate picture of their forth-coming results. Another new system available at Agoura Dental is Fast Braces®. Compared to traditional wire braces, the new method is quicker, less costly, and more hygienic, according to the product’s website. “Conventional [braces] take 2-3 years, several appointments for wire tightening and the like. Those appointments end up costing the patient. But Fast Braces®,” Dr. Choroomi pauses, “It’s so fun to educate people on this. I sometimes feel like I invented the technology. The wires for these braces, unlike conventional braces, work from the heat of your mouth and tighten through memory in the wire.” If he is not making art through dentistry, spending time with his wife and kids, he can be found cooking gourmet meals for the homeless, every Friday in the San Fernando Valley.

After having earned his medical degree at UCLA, his residencies in Internal Medicine at CedarsSinai and Dermatology at UCLA and his fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery (to treat forms of skin cancer) at UC San Francisco, Dr. Kaufman has continued to add innumerable accomplishments to his resounding résumé. A small sample of these include being the President of the Tri-County Dermatology Society, being a member of myriad medical organizations, lending his invaluable expertise to international meetings involving both dermatology and plastic surgery, as well as being a Clinical Associate Professor at both the USC Keck and UCLA David Geffen Schools of Medicine. Based on just his credentials and certifications alone, Dr. Kaufman is in a class of his own. What sets him apart from his dermatological peers, making him the doctor among doctors, however, is not only his experience spanning three decades, but an intrinsic understanding of his patients and what they need. For instance, Dr. Kaufman is all too aware of the insidious effects of UV radiation, even during overcast days, when the inclination to not wear sunscreen results in “blotchy pigmentation, premature aging and, at worst, early signs of skin cancer.” As Dr. Kaufman noted, it's imperative that individuals “wear a broad spectrum, waterproof SPF sun-

screen (UVA & UVB) of 30 or greater; wear protective clothing; limit outdoor activities to early or later in the day; give themselves a monthly examination for anything suspicious; and, most importantly, see a dermatologist on an annual basis to assess possible evidence for skin cancer.” While individuals can and do protect themselves from sun damage, it doesn't, unfortunately, eliminate the incidence of skin cancer. Dedicating his profession to saving lives, Dr. Kaufman spends the majority of his time expertly assessing and alleviating the repercussions of skin cancer including, but not limited to, “fixing parts affected by skin cancer removal.” A foremost example of this, which Dr. Kaufman is applauded and recognized for, is facial reconstruction following treatment. Dr. Kaufman's scope of knowledge in this particular area is so exemplary that he was elected to the Board of Directors for the American College of Mohs Surgery, and is a leading author on the subject. In addition to his revered standing as a top Mohs surgeon, Dr. Kaufman's dermatological expertise also covers cosmetic ground, such as Botox, chemical peels, dermal fillers, scar revision and hair restoration. Certainly, aesthetics, even in the purest sense, cannot be overlooked; but for Dr. Kaufman, the functional treatment and reconstruction of the adverse physical effects of skin cancer is, by far, the most rewarding part of his vocation. With each passing day, Dr. Kaufman's legacy takes on an added dimension, as not only a forerunner in his field, but one who provides transcendent care locally.

Legendary Artist,
HERB ALPERT on Living a Meaningful Life H
“I had a real lucky start at eight, going to Melrose Elementary School here in Los Angeles,” recalls the Malibu resident. “They had a music appreciation class and there were a bunch of instruments on a table. I happened to pick up a trumpet and it changed my life. We just don’t have that type of situation anymore. Kids are struggling to find something creative to do and I think music is an important ingredient in discovering one’s own uniqueness.” Alpert’s entire journey has been unique. Establishing A&M Records (Alpert & Jerry Moss) in 1962 first out of his garage as an artist with his hit with the Tijuana Brass “The Lonely Bull,” the record company grew to become the world’s biggest independent label, amassing a roster of greats including Burt Bacharach, Joe Cocker, Cat Stevens, Janet Jackson and the Carpenters. He recalls seeing Karen Carpenter two weeks before she died. She told him she felt she had gotten through her struggles and was ready to record and go on tour again. “I’m not crazy about talking about losing Karen,” he says. “I really liked her very much. She didn’t recognize the positive effect she had around
the world. She was a tremendous artist and when I asked her what she thought her strength was, she told me she loved to play the drums. And she was darn good. Losing her is one of those things you just don’t believe.” Hard to believe still is Alpert at 78, is still recording and doing dates. Obviously he doesn’t need to, but he says it energizes him. “That’s something I will continue to do until my valves stop working.” “Steppin’ Out” is his tribute to his favorite songs done “his way.” “The key ingredient for any artist is to find your own voice. Whenever I play, that’s me.” The record features Lani Hall, his wife of 40 years, whom he calls his “soulmate.” “She brought a whole new spark to my life,” says Alpert who has two children from a previous marriage and one with Hall. Alpert also paints and sculpts. “I’m a guy who follows my passion. I think we all should do that. Confucius said if you find the work you love to do and you’re passionate about it, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” As a benefactor of the arts, Alpert makes sure others will have that opportunity as well. “To have a real meaningful life, a key component is giving back and helping others,” he says. “Giving becomes a conduit for receiving. I get it back. I’m very blessed. I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing.”

AGAZINES ARE WONDROUS LITTLE WORLDS. They are a fine glossy finish to weeks of excitement, chaos, appointments, drafts, edits, re-drafts, and final versions which eventually become "final, final" versions ready to hit the presses. Magazines live on ideas that clash and meld, and, often against all odds, merge into untold artistic, financial, and technical commandments. In the end, a magazine literally becomes part of the pages of history; a time capsule of the latest culture, people, fashion, and ideas of the day. And then … the creation of the next issue, and the process is once again embraced. Most of us are still working on “final final” drafts of ourselves, often living our lives in transition, transforming just like magazines going to print during the publishing process do. I am thrilled to be contributing to this issue of Westlake Magazine in a new column ambitiously titled "Better Life." Together, we will focus on finding new ways to exercise our curiosity. Together, we will embark upon unique adventures that will allow us to create with the intention of being, feeling, loving, and living more vibrantly. We will discover new ways to ignite our ambitions. Yes, magazines are wondrous little worlds because they present subjects in their best light: from celebrities and restaurants to cars, purses and charities. I believe people can do that for themselves. They can choose to

create and present themselves in their best light: from passion and interests to humor, intelligence and charity. If we make mistakes, well … we get to start over on a new issue! As a Certified Life Coach, many of my clients wait for me to tell them “how to live,” but they don’t need me for that – that advice is usually abundant and free! My role is to help clients reveal from deep within themselves the perfect way they would consciously choose to live. Most often we do this by exploring two types of ideas: the ones they have never considered and the ones they are afraid to act upon. Because at one point we all knew exactly why we were born and what we were born to do. I am excited to be writing this Better Life column, because the people who create Westlake Magazine are impassioned about the stories that live and breathe in our community and around the globe; stories of people and ideas that begin small and then grow into something that can change the world. I look forward to presenting different ways to change your world, and your life for the better. Wishing you dreams that come true and everything you need to create your own "Better Life!" DO WOMEN AND MEN INVEST DIFFERENTLY? BY TOM YOON
• Men tend to trade more often than women. Men seem to buy and sell investments more frequently than women. This difference could result in an advantage for women investors. For one thing, if women do trade less, they may incur fewer commission charges, fees and other expenses, all of which can eat into investment returns. Also, by holding investments longer, women may be able to take better advantage of market rallies. During the 2008-2009 financial crisis, for example, men were more likely than women to sell shares of stock at market lows, which led to bigger losses among male traders — and fewer gains when some of the stock values began to rise again — according to a study by Vanguard, a mutual fund company. • Men tend to invest more aggressively than women. Perhaps not surprisingly, men seem to be more willing to take risks with their investments. This trait can be
both positive and negative. On the positive side, risk is associated with reward, so the more aggressive the investment, the greater the potential for growth. On the negative side, taking too much risk pretty much speaks for itself. Ideally, all investors — men and women — should stick with investments that fit their individual risk tolerance. • Women are more likely to look at the “big picture.” Although both men and women investors want information, women seem to take a more “holistic” approach — that is, instead of focusing strictly on performance statistics, they tend to delve deeper into their investments’ background, competitive environment and other factors. This quest for additional knowledge may help explain why all-female investment clubs have achieved greater returns than all-male clubs, according to a study by the National Association of Investors Corp., which represents thousands of investment clubs across the country. • Men may be more optimistic about the financial markets. Some studies show that men are more optimistic about key
economic indicators and future stock market performance. Optimism can be a valuable asset when it comes to investing; if you have confidence in the future, you’re more likely to invest for it, and to continue investing. On the other hand, false optimism may lead to over-confidence, which can have negative results for investors. Neither men nor women have a monopoly on positive investment behaviors; each gender can probably learn something from the other. Ultimately, of course, it’s your decision-making, not your x- or y-chromosomes, that will determine your ability to make progress toward your long-term goals — so educate yourself about your choices, and get the help you need from a financial professional, as you invest through the years. SEVERAL YEARS AGO, A BOOK TITLED MEN ARE FROM MARS, WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS WAS QUITE POPULAR. As the title suggests, the book argues that men and women are vastly different from each other, particularly in their emotional needs and in the way they communicate. While not everyone agrees with the notion that men and women might as well be from different planets, most of us would probably concur that the two genders frequently behave differently — and this divergence in behavior may also show up in the way that we invest. In fact, various studies and anecdotal evidence suggests these differences in the way that men and women invest:

Serving White Heart Warriors BY LAUREN CRADDOCK
THE WHITE HEART FOUNDATION IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO HONORING AND AIDING WOUNDED WARRIORS NATIONWIDE, AS WELL AS FIRST RESPONDERS IN THE VENTURA, LOS ANGELES AND ORANGE COUNTIES. Ryan Sawtelle, the founder of the organization, started with the creation of the display of flags at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11. After years of fundraising and organizing events to honor those who serve our nation, Sawtelle began the White Heart Foundation. “The Foundation started as a simple hobby as I am an actor and commercial acting is how I make a living,” says Sawtelle. “With the downtime I was experiencing, I figured it be best to put some positive efforts in the community than anything else so I built off of the charity projects I had already started.” The primary goal of the foundation is to serve those who have served all of us both at home and abroad. The foundation first does this by helping equip first responders with necessary resources. With the state of the United States economy, national budget cuts are beginning to affect the communities’ “health, safety and preparedness,” says Sawtelle. The foundation helps
our local heroes in light of this problem not only by equipping them with resources, but also by spreading awareness of the support needed for first responders. A major component of the White Heart Foundation is honoring and serving wounded warriors when they return home from action. “These heroes have been severely wounded in battle and are not given the proper care they need to transition back into everyday life,” says Sawtelle. “Our goal is to help get them the care they deserve and to support these heroes throughout the existence of the foundation.” Each year, the foundation chooses one “White Heart Warrior” to be the beneficiary of their annual Ride to the Flags motorcycle charity ride around the time of 9/11. “While we are only a small, grassroots organization, every little bit of good that we can do goes a long way,” says Sawtelle. To greater serve our nation’s many heroes, the White Heart Foundation works with the Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation in Pomona, Calif. While working with the Casa Colina Centers, the foundation is introduced to heroes from around the country, discovering new ways to lend a hand in the rehabilitation process of soldiers. One hero, Army Ranger Cory Remsburg, left a lasting impact on Sawtelle
after the foundation was able to help him afford rehabilitation equipment. SFC Remsburg served 10 tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. “With the help of a walker, SFC Remsburg was able to stand up and walk across the living room on his own to greet us. That meant the world to us,” says Sawtelle. “If this little foundation never gets the support it needs to continue, just knowing that we made a big difference in the life of SFC Cory Remsburg made all of the effort worth it.” Ryan Sawtelle hopes to expand the White Heart Foundation with the creation of “a crowd-source funding website in 2014 called the White Heart Network.” With the website, communities will have access to a simple method to aid their local heroes. “As with any grassroots organization, we hope we can expand to have a positive influence in every community,” says Sawtelle. To stay connected with the organization and the launch of the White Heart Network, visit www.WhiteHeartFoundation.org.

In September, Spears told Good Morning America after a helicopter ride to the desert city to greet 1,000 of her fans with the show announcement: “I love Vegas. The energy here is really, really good. I’m definitely going to do the greatest hits, but I’m gonna have to put some of my new material in it just to keep it fresh.” No doubt, that would include some of the songs off her new album, which she has touted as her most personal to date. “After having a huge breakup this year, I had a lot to say in the studio, so it was really nice to have a therapy like that and to be able to share that with my fans,” she told Ryan Seacrest referring to her early 2012 split from fiance Jason Trawick. “Usually the stuff that really comes from the heart is usually the best stuff and has the best beat and really kind of helps you get over the breakup really easy, ‘cause you sing about it and have to think about it every night, but then you’re like, ‘It’s okay, I’m performing now so it’s totally fine.’ You get over it and it’s like a therapeutic way to get over it.” It seems another way Spears has gotten over it was by adding a new beau in her life, David Lucado. The couple has been photographed in the area, including a Sunday worship service at Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village. Spears has also been seen locally with her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, 8 and 7-years old respectively. Many forget Spears began as a child, herself, in the public eye, starring on the Mickey

Born in McComb, Mississippi and raised in Kentwood, Louisiana, she was actually turned down the first time when she auditioned for the revived Mickey Mouse Club in Atlanta as she was too young, but was finally able to join the team in 1993 when she was 12 years old. She recently revealed that she shared her first kiss at 13 with her Mouseketeer co-mate Justin Timberlake who went on to become her boyfriend with whom she shared a very public relationship as time progressed. In 1997, Spears’ premiere album “Baby One More Time” debuted at No. 1. Her second album, “Oops! ... I Did it Again”, released in 2000, also debuted at No. 1, and her third album, “Britney”, followed suit. This year, Spears also celebrated her 10th year in the business of fragrances. By February of next year she will have 15 in the marketplace in 87 countries with launch of two new fragrances -- The Naughty Remix and Nice Remix from her fantasy fragrance line. The Britney Spears fragrance franchise has grown to be a billion dollar business. Spears recently told Sam Champion of GMA that she never expected her career to go as far as it has. “When I first started out I always wanted to make just enough money to buy a beautiful home in Louisiana and have kids and do that.” “I never thought I would continue to do what I do,” she said. “I really enjoy what I do. I have fun when performing. I feel like I’m at home when I’m on stage.”

TRANSFORMING YOUR BODY WITH LIFELONG RESULTS
An Interview with Dr. Donald Waldrep, Medical Director for Bariatric Surgery at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, Ca. BY JENNIFER DAVIES

“Traditional surgeries involve cutting intestine and rearranging or removing it, or leaving an adjustable device inside the body. The WRAP avoids those issues and fills a new niche by simply changing the shape of the stomach with stitches.“
thought that weight loss surgery is primarily for the person they saw on television who had to have the wall of his house torn down just to get out. I think this technique will prove ideal for people who are trying to lose ‘the same’ 20 to 30 pounds or more, and we are certainly seeing those types of inquiries now.” Just as we are free to choose the shape of our noses or size our chest, Dr. Waldrep has now made it possible to change the size of our waist, and all through a new and innovative cosmetic surgery. Donald Waldrep, MD, FACS, FASMBS, trained in surgery at Cedars-Sinai before becoming assistant professor at USC, performed over 10,000 laparoscopic surgeries in his career, including several thousand state-of-the-art weight loss surgeries since 2000. He started performing the WRAP in 2009. Of America’s estimated 80 million dieters—about 80% try to lose weight by themselves jumping from one trend to the next with very little follow through or success. A leading independent market research publisher reported that the annual revenues in the U.S. Weight Loss Market exceed an estimated $60 billion. So are a few stitches enough? And why didn't anybody think of this before? Waldrep explained, “The concept has been around for almost 50 years, but the introductory experience and success of WRAP is exciting. As simple as the concept is, it takes a great deal of training, time, and talent to sew something with – as my female clients appreciate - the quality of a fine Italian shoe, “ he laughed. “I feel this is a revolutionary approach to helping people feel happier and healthier and this is the primary reason I am captivated by the term cosmetic weight loss surgery. It’s a here-and-now idea,” Dr. Waldrep said, “and the here is Westlake Village.” The obvious is that which is never seen until someone expresses it simply. Khalil Gibran

EING OVER-WEIGHT OR DEALING WITH THE CHALLENGES OF OBESITY IS A TOPIC THAT CAN BE COMPLEX WITH ESOTERIC EXPLANATIONS ABOUT WHY IT EXISTS AND HOW IT CAN BE REMEDIED. There are many different schools of thought that include strict diet divas, calorie counters, feel the burn exercise regimes, new age foodies and secret surgery seekers. All these philosophies are advocates for what they believe in and considering that any one of these beliefs may work for someone, we encourage people to seek out what will be the healthiest solution for them while achieving optimal results. One remarkable new technique in the area of weight-loss is an innovative approach called gastric plication surgery and it is being touted as the wave of the future. The procedure originated with the pioneering efforts of local surgeon, Dr. Donald Waldrep, Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Los Roblas Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks. Waldrep, a tall and striking young surgeon, simply pushes on the side of a model stomach and smiles answering the unspoken question, "Yes, that's it. We simply fold the stomach so that it comfortably holds less food." That’s it? No droning and dull anatomy lesson? No complex language in incomprehensible terms that we usually hear from the mouths of brilliant people? That’s It? Dr. Donald Waldrep made complete sense out of something that beforehand had been so confusing and, quite frankly, somewhat frightening. And, like the surgery he created, he did it so simply. Coined as the Waldrep WRAP, or WRAP for short (gastric plication surgery), Dr. Waldrep explained, “Traditional surgeries involve cutting intestine and rearranging or removing it, or leaving an adjustable device inside the body. The WRAP avoids those issues and fills a new niche by simply changing the shape of the stomach with stitches. Because it is so straightforward and less invasive, it is a technique that my clients are more comfortable with.” Waldrep said, “Losing weight doesn't need to be difficult and it is not reserved for the "morbidly obese" anymore. The idea that surgery is something so drastic that people who would benefit from it should also fear it, is simply a thing of the past. When you can create a simple technique using the concepts of a minimally invasive outpatient surgery, the idea becomes much more attractive to patients and to doctors. People once

OUR FABRIC OF FREEDOM BY M. DAYLE THOMAS

May God bless us and the United States of America.
W W W.W E S T L A K E M A G A Z I N E . C O M
E HAVE RECENTLY EXPERIENCED THAT PAINFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE 9/11 INVASION OF OUR COUNTRY. We are an eclectic nation made of privileged and underprivileged with many races of happy people, heroes and slaves. All of these and more form the fabric of our freedom. I grew up in the south when the Civil War was clearly taught in history books. They told how slavery ended, but did it really? Slavery means being owned by another who makes your choices for you. Based on that opinion, there are probably a shocking number of people who are slaves today. One of the most treasured freedoms we have is our choice to be ourselves. Heroes have no time to toddle or hobble through their day rehearsing how weighted down they are with their life’s challenges. They have chosen to step into the arena to make a difference one life at a time. Having accepted the fact that life is difficult and complex, they have embarked upon something not yet proven and have dared to under-ride it with their lives. The ills of humanity cannot be cured in mass form but are by one improvement at a time. Starvation and poverty do not start in the masses; they start by one hungry person at a time. The spirit of America is not accomplished by the masses, but by the individuals who make up the masses. Heroes are determined to walk the uncharted mile be it protection or pursuit with discipline beyond and a face to match. The religious segments of our nation, churches, synagogues and other places of worship, bring hope to weary people, assuring them that help is available to heal sick minds, sick bodies and sick nations. There are distinct reasons that we salute the heroes who have gone the distance that others conclude to be too hard. The weak admire the strong and the losers wish they were winners. Achievers become the envy of all who stand on the sidelines to watch the exertion of the strength from moms to athletes, and from powerful leaders to the lonely soldiers. They have turned down the noise in the background of life and in silence found inner wisdom and courage to continue because of their faith in God. The spirit of America is people reaching out through kindness and compassion. To children, the elderly, the forgotten and the oppressed. We are an army of individuals from all walks of life coming together to lend strength, caring and influence. There is much more left to do. The fabric of freedom calls out to each of us to come to its aid in doing our part to help empower those who have lost their way or maybe have yet to find it. Let us unite with intense determination to fight all forms of freedom abuse from our personal choices to our nation’s liberty.

ALABASAS HAS TWO NEW CROWNS. On Oct. 13 Dominique Jackson, 18, and Coco Hunter, 23, were crowned Miss Teen Calabasas and Miss Calabasas, respectively. Jackson, a freshman in college majoring in physiology, plans on becoming a physical therapist if “modeling and wardrobe styling does not work out,” she says. With her crown she plans to work toward making the American Cancer Society more visible in the city of Calabasas. “I chose that platform because my dad actually got diagnosed with stage one prostate cancer a few months ago,” she says. “Cancer is such a common thing in our society and I’d like to bring more awareness to it.” On why she entered pageants, Jackson says, “Before pageants I had low selfesteem. And they are a unique way to give back to the community.” Hunter began as a model and found pageants as a logical step towards one of her larger goals: being crowned Miss USA. “I have always known I wanted to be Miss USA and I know I can do so much with that platform.” With the Miss USA crown comes a scholarship to the New York Film Academy. “I’ll be able to study directing, both sides of the camera, and acting if I choose to do that,” she says. “Overall, I want to show girls that modeling is a business and it can be about empowering women.” For now, Hunter plans on continuing her work with the Aids Walk Foundation and working with local charities to prepare girls for next year’s pageant.

The Best of New Zealand RENOWNED HEDGE FUND manager and philanthropist Julian H. Robertson has had a love affair with New Zealand for some 30 years. With his late wife, Josie, and the family, he created three of Asia-Pacific’s most celebrated luxury lodges and two of the best golf courses in the world. Today, he shares “his New Zealand” with a select few golfing enthusiasts and luxury adventure lovers seeking a unique experience of a lifetime. Tiger Tour is Robertson’s personally-designed, nine-night program featuring the best of the north and south islands with accommodations at his three award-winning, Relais & Chateaux lodges: The Farm at Cape Kidnappers in the Hawke’s Bay wine region, Matakauri Lodge in Queenstown, and The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs in the far north Bay of Islands area. All feature luxury accommodations, fine dining, marvelous spas, and a wide range of activities inviting you to fully experience each unique destination. There are only two departures in 2014 -- March 5-14 for a maximum of four couples and April 1-10 for a maximum of eight twosomes. And for 2014, he is adding a private heli-golfing outing where you’ll fly by helicopter high into the mountains to drive biodegradable golf balls from the glaciers above Queenstown. The March 5th tour, including private jet and helicopter transfers aboard the Robertson family aircraft, begins at The Farm at Cape Kidnappers in Hawke’s Bay and includes a round of golf on the magnificent Tom Doak-designed course now ranked among the top 35 in the world.

The next stop is Matakauri Lodge on the scenic shores of Lake Wakatipu--an intimate, chic base camp for some of Tiger Tour’s most exciting adventures. The small village is gateway to the mighty glaciers and fjords of Milford Sound while just seven minutes away is Queenstown where you can sample hearty wines, local cuisine, and explore the shops. The program concludes at the magnificent Lodge at Kauri Cliffs, one of the most awarded luxury boutique golf and spa resort hotels in the country. Set on 6,000 acres, the lodge features spectacular 180-degree views of the Pacific and is home to a PGA championship course designed and built by David Harman. Here, you’ll play 15 holes with panoramic views of the South Pacific and six following along cliffs that plunge down to the sea. The area is world-renowned for its beautiful beaches, great sailing and world-class deep-sea fishing. Alexander. With a grin he says “hello” and asks me if I’m ready to work. Acting much like an excited little girl, I jumped up with a big smile and went to work! I can’t say I was the fastest cutter, but I kept in line and concentrated making sure not to drop or miss any grapes. After finishing the row, Glenn was ready to move to our next location. Shadowing Glenn like a hawk, we were off. A native Texan, Glenn grew up farming row crops. His upbringing soon led him to pursue a "hands on" approach to managing his grapes. I found myself in awe listening in amazement to someone with so much knowledge and experience. With so many questions swimming in my head, I was equally in awe of my own silence- a feat I rarely achieve. Glen and I pulled up to the next location, Custom Crush where the grapes we pulled will be delivered. Custom Crush is great place where a producer delivers winegrapes to process and be barreled. It was amazing to see the chain of production and the way so many people worked together to get the grapes to the barrel. After spending the day with Glenn and his amazing team I sat at lunch talking harvest, life in wine country, and also his own winery Sanglier Cellars. Glenn’s grin was present as he talked about the wines and how this was truly a labor of love and family. After lunch we strolled up the street to meet Chelsea, Glen’s daughter that works at the Sanglier tasting room. The family first produced Syrah then Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Russian River Valley and the Sonoma Coast. The Boar's Camp Cuvée, and the Tusque wines that reflect the traditions of grape varietals of the South of France, Chateauneuf-du-Pape and the Northern Rhône. Throughout the years, the family has remained committed to personally farming all the grapes for the Sanglier Cellars. They pride themselves on insuring the wines are first and foremost a joy at the table and that they also perfectly reflect Glenn’s amazing wife Melissa’s, love for food. “I created our family wines out of love for my wife and her love for cooking.” My day ended sitting next to Melissa, Glenn and friends at their home sharing family stories, recipes and wine. I’m hoping one day I’ll be able to convince Melissa to give me her recipes! I found myself in love with this amazing family, their hard work, and delicious wines. But I found myself more in love with wine, where it comes from and respectfully what and who it takes to get it to the bottle. continued

CROSS SONOMA COUNTY, HARVEST IS IN FULL SWING. Harvesting grapes to make wine is not only the first step that grapes make towards the finished bottle, but it is also the busiest time of the year for a winery. I was given a once in a lifetime opportunity to follow and work a night of harvest with the team from Bacchus Vineyard Management, a vineyard care company that provides a personal and professional approach to vineyard management. With a late night wake up call from Bacchus Vineyard Management, General Manager Tony Bugica, I was ready to take on the vines. I wasn’t quite sure what I would be doing and just how hands-on they would allow me to get, as this is a very crucial time of the year for a winery. With my head lamp and gloves on, we drove up to our first pull. Bugica informed me that we would be pulling Pinot Tony Bugica Noir. For many that do not understand, this varietal is not a favorite amongst the workers to pull (or for myself now for that matter). Pinot Noir unlike Cabernet Sauvignon clusters are smaller and are a bit of a challenge for the workers to cut and collect. Trying not to cut my finger off, I jumped in and worked along with the other workers with a swift speed. It’s amazing how fast the process is and how the men and women work like a well-oiled machine. That being said, to see first-hand the emotion and pride that is given is truly overwhelming. As we moved to our next site, I’m a bit cold but amped from my black coffee. I walked up the hill to see a crew hard at work under the flood lights. As I continued up I could see a group of men discussing the crop and their thoughts on the progress the workers were making on the pull. A man (who was clearly in charge) started to walk toward me. Nervous and excited, he introduced himself to me; Bacchus Vineyard Management Owner Glenn

Summerland Winery & Tasting Room Summerland Winery owner Nebil “Bilo” Zarif strives to showcase excellent fruit quality combined with strong regional character in all his wines. Visit and taste for this reason alone: Summerland’s efforts in the production of Burgundian varietals sourced from cool climate vineyards were recognized by Robert Parker who rated the 2002 Bien Nacido Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, 92 points and 93 points respectively, in The Wine Advocate. I suggest trying the 2012 Grenache Rosé, Paso Robles ($25). With the warm months here, this wine delivers a fruity palate and a burst of acidity. With a great price point, this wine is perfect for a Sunday grilling with friends. Hours: Mon - Sun 11am - 7pm. 2330 Lillie Ave Summerland CA 93067. 805.565.9463 • www.summerlandwine.com
Stonehaus at Westlake Village Inn Surrounded by its own crafted vineyard, this boutique tasting experience, reminiscent of Italy, is the newest addition to the Westlake Village Inn. The Stonehaus is one of the most unique lifestyle gathering places in the greater Los Angeles area that combines 140 bottles of specially selected wines from around the world, also featuring their own private label wines. What impressed me are the flights. Flights range from Sparkling Wines and Champagne to Rhone Varietals and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each flight features a choice of wines within that varietal, allowing you to get a glimpse of all of the wines they have to offer. Paired perfectly with one of their signature boards made with food featuring fresh, healthy and seasonal ingredients this is the perfect getaway for the weekend. D'Alfonso-Curran Wines Santa Barbara County enjoys the longest growing season in California, making D’Alfonso-Curran’s harvest season stretch from August through November. At D’AlfonsoCurran, they focus their efforts on making great wines and leave the growing of world-class grapes to the viticulturalists, from whom they purchase all of our fruit. Visit and taste by appointment only their portfolio of wines: BADGE, Di Bruno, Curran and D’Alfonso-Curran. I would suggest trying the 2007 D'Alfonso-Curran Pinot Noir, Rancho La Viña. D’Alfonso-Curran is their flagship brand, showcasing ultra-premium, vineyarddesignated Pinot Noirs exclusively from the Santa Rita Hills AVA. Cork’s n’ Crowns Santa Barbara’s latest addition to the Urban Wine Trail, Corks n’ Crowns, is proud to feature a wide selection of small production, hardto-find, award winning wines from California’s boutique wineries. As many of our readers know, boutique wineries are dear to my heart and I believe that they show the true heart of winemaking. I would suggest ordering the Pinot Flight. The Pinot Noir Flight features ultra-premium, limited-production Pinots that are all highly regarded by top reviewers like Keller Estate 2009 La Cruz Vineyard Pinot Noir. This flight is an experience of top California winemakers and acclaimed international wineries. Beer enthusiasts will also enjoy exceptional craft beers from across the country, each selection produced by small, independent brewers who use only traditional ingredients and time-honored methods. I
AM PLEASED TO BE THE GUEST CULINARY LIFE EDITOR FOR WESTLAKE MAGAZINE’S, HOLIDAY 2013 ISSUE. I grew up in the nearby ‘hood of Oak Park and love this wonderful region of California. Not only does our State maintain one of the richest agricultural industries in the world … a $36 billion dollar industry that generates at least $100 billion in economic interest, but as trendsetters, we are breaking ground (no pun intended) in the area of organic farming to provide local restaurants with the freshest and healthiest produce possible. Farm-to-table is the trend, and California eateries are leading the way. The fine art of food preparation is not only a career for me but has been a favorite pastime for as long as I can remember. Exploring ways to appeal to the many “finicky” eaters out there is a mission for me as a home chef operating a meal preparation concierge service for local moms and companies hosting intimate venues or events. They say necessity is the mother of invention and launching “Foodie On Call” was just that … a necessary component to many of the local individuals that simply do not have enough hours in the day or days in the week to fully prepare or provide healthy meals to family, friends or business associates on an as-needed basis. Additionally, I am excited to have Chef Eric Kopelow, CEC, Vice President and Corporate Executive Chef of NBC Universal Studios Hollywood and affiliate at the CURE Centers in Westlake Village designing menu's for my clients. We are working together to get people out of the mind-set that eating healthy has to be restricted or unpleasant. We are taking the fats and the high calories out while providing gourmet meals that are healthy and nutritious. Learn more about Chef Eric at: http://www.cureprogram.com/cheferic-kopelow/#sthash.Lj4Ho3BG.dpuf Taking pleasure in our food not only consist of eating healthy foods that taste good but also being in an environment that supports the entire experience. We are fortunate to reside in a region that thrives on creating new and innovative eateries that are setting new trends by not only providing menus that are unique and enjoyable, but also creating a distinctive ambience where one can find camaraderie, fun or romance on the fly. On the pages that follow we are providing our readers with a number of places or ways to take pleasure in culinary life. I hope you have the opportunity to visit each of these extraordinary establishments and enjoy a fabulous gastronomic experience.
Here’s to food -- cheers! continued

BEER. FOOD. MUSIC. It is based on these fundamental ingredients - the trifecta of entertainment - that The LAB Brewing Co. was born. Beer lovers rejoice. With more than 25 handpicked microbrews on tap … and that’s before adding the house brews, handcrafted by their brewmaster on site to the mix. From the aggressively hopped IPA Bad Influence to the oh-so-strong Take Her Home Belgian Tripel, the house brews not only pack a punch, but they are sure to awaken your taste buds. Beer aficionados and casual drinkers are encouraged to seek out their head brewer Roger for a tour of the premises or to talk shop. Large stunning ATMOSPHERE copper fermentation vessels align the restaurant and contribute to a unique dining experience. The setting is a perfect match for our eclectic American cuisine. Menu favorites include BBQ duck quesadilla, white lasagna and Alaskan cod in a hazelnut sage brown butter sauce. No, this isn’t your typical “bar food,” though the LAB Burger is to die for. Everything is fresh farm to table.
